Much like the All Blacks, the Wallabies also have their first test match under a new coach.

They take on Wales tonight in Joe Schmidts first game in charge.

Our Australian correspondent Adam Peacock joined Piney to discuss what approach Schmidt has brought to the team, and what the expectations are for the Wallabies this season.

“I don’t think there’s too many people who really know what we’re going to get from the Wallabies in this next six months.”

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport Podcast with Jason Vine
from News Talk ZEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Broadcasting live from Test Venue for Soyth bar Stadium and
Dunedin five past seven tonight. Then of course we can
get home and watch Joe Schmitt's Wallabies for the first time.
Scott robertson taking charge of the All Blacks for the
first time tonight. Joe Schmidt in charge of the Wallabies
up against Wales at Alian's which brings us nicely to
our Australian correspondent Adam Peacock. How are you.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Mate, good party yourself? Very good?

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Thanks mate, very good. Looking forward to watching the Wallabies
against Wales tonight. What's the general feeling around about the
Wallabies under Joe Schmith.

Speaker 4 (00:44):
They should win tonight, shouldn't They should do Yeah, obviously
Wales have had a few issues, insignations and even though
last time we met they absolutely pumped us and that
was the cataclysmic end or situation point.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
If you want to want it that way, on the
Eddie Jones era, that was as low as low can
get for Australian rugby. So I think this new fellas
your fella, our fella now Joe Shmid he's come in
and he's not gone. Oh, let's press the paint button.
Let's get all the guys in from overseas this, let's
do that. It's like, okay, if you want to go

(01:21):
and play ragul League next year, you're gone. If you
want to be overseas at the moment, no, I't pick you.
I'll just go from super rugby and back to basics approach,
I think. So it'd be interesting to see how that go.
It's not the nicest day here and it's any bit
of rain about so it might not be free flowing
running rugby, but probably not going to be that anyway.
First up with Jay, So yeah, intrigued to have a

(01:44):
look at it. I don't really know. I don't I
don't think there's too many people who really know what
We're going to get to the wall of it this
next six months.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
What sort of cutsows you're getting because we're right in
the middle of you know, the NRL season, you know,
Australian rule still going on, other things happening, Wimbledon, and
we'll talk about that in a moment. Does does rugby
get cut through the people know that tease match on
Sydney Tonight.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
Yes, it depends where you look. Looks a lot. I
don't know what it's like there in New Zealand, but
it feels like with the electronic media these days and
print media that if a certain organization has the rights
as the nine network boo here in Australia and it's
on stand so that means their papers like the Senny
Morning Herald give it heavy coverage, but if it's not,

(02:31):
they're like the other sides of the men. You don't
really invest heavily in it. There's an element of intrigue,
so it does depend where you look. But yeah, there
is a bit of interest in the rugby playing States.
I'd say the AFL playing States not so much, but
yeah there's a bit here, even though there is origin
and you regular RL stuff going on.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
Wembledon. I mentioned that we just talked about our under
seventeen basketball team about to take on the United States.
In terms of a David versk Eliath, one of your
young Australians taking on Novak Djokovic, has he got a
David's chance against.

Speaker 3 (03:08):
I'd put Alexi Popperin's chances a little bit better than
David's chances against Golif but I'm not not a huge
amount of Obviously it's Djokovic and look at the moment
he doesn't to be showing the full effects of a
knee surgery, just one. But look he doesn't have that
base to lean on. I don't think Djokovic so if

(03:29):
Poperin gets him into a fight, he might be a chance.
He so not ruling him out, but he's going to
have to play near his best, which he has done
Alexi his best too. Pretty switched on performance so far.
But it's as Djokovic senate call Wimbledon. Not many people
beating there.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
So what's something that kariosis later situation.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
I don't know. I don't know. He's just lurking around
and he's had issues which can be a career and
remember one Martine del Potro, he started to have risk
injuries and he was never a higher Not the case Nick,
because he does brings upthing to the court. But he's
he's best friends with Jokovic now, which is just a
surreal thought. He's doing a bit of commentary there for

(04:10):
the BBC, so he is making his presence known wherever
he goes and his opinion. Knowing Nick, but hopefully around
the American hard court Swing, which comes up in a
month's time or so. He's back out there because tennis
does need to play like Nick Kios, and it looks
as though given how much he's hanging around the tour,
and Nick Kios needs tennis as well, so he's not

(04:32):
far off, but he's not quite there yet.

Speaker 4 (04:35):
All right.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
And to finish today, football, the A leagues during the
week have announced a cutting of their cloth. The money
that they give to the A League clubs is going
to be greatly diminished next season. What are the repercussions
of this?

Speaker 3 (04:51):
I think the clubs knew bet down that this was coming,
so that they're preparing budgets accordingly. Look clubs like Central Coast,
Adelaide and probably Wellington in with this. Now they can
ride this out because they seen it and they've got
some young players coming through. And Wellington obviously have the
reserves to play in your national league, and they've got

(05:12):
the academy and things like that. So it's not a
complete like doomsday apocalypse, but it's not great and clubs
really needed upturning those centralized funding distributions to keep Bible
in the long term. At the moment, it's not going
to happen. Next two years it's not going to happen.
But yeah, I think they're going to have to lean

(05:33):
heavily into developing players for transfer markets and that's the
only way out of it. But the football overall, you
might not get your quality of import in as you
would and your young player might go earlier, but they're
they're the two main differences I think going forward to
the league.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
All right, and did you get some golfing before the
heavens opened?

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Yeah? I know the heavens opened during No, it's you're
sitting in Duneeda and I feel like I am as well.
Eight six that we counted out and the course eight
successive saturdays where spend rain and winked ridiculous hidious.

Speaker 4 (06:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
Do you think it's somebody's way of telling you to
give the game of golf away or not?

Speaker 3 (06:17):
Probably? But I won't.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
Love it, mate, Always love chatting Australian sport with the
Adam will do it again next Saturday.

Speaker 3 (06:26):
Sounds good, fine it cheers Mane, Thanks.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Mate, have a good one. That's dam Peacock, Australian correspondent.
Catch him on socials. He's also part of stan Sports
coverage of Wimbledon. Alexi Popron up against Novak Djokovic. That's
three forty five tomorrow morning for those who would like
to get up to watch the latest Australian hope up
against Novak Djokovic. Yeah, three forty five tomorrow morning, which

(06:48):
is around about the same time actually that Ireland and
South Africa play.
