Here comes Hayslap straight off the backshot ball, here it is.

Speaker 4 (04:34):
There's the one. It's a try.

Speaker 5 (04:37):
It's a try to Robbie head shot.

Speaker 6 (04:42):
That's gotta be the history maker, got to be.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Ireland has been in the.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
All Blacks the culmination of a historic week in.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
Chicago November five, twenty sixteen, Ireland forty All Blacks twenty
nine Island's first ever win over the All Blacks in
one hundred and eleven years of trying. Now in the
nineteen Test matches between the two since then, we've had
five wins and the All Blacks have had the rather.
Island have had four, five wins to the All Blacks,

(05:14):
four to Ireland. Ireland claimed that historic series win here
in twenty twenty two. We've won both of the Test
matches since then twenty eight twenty four and that thrilling
Rugby World Cup quarterfinal and last year in Dublin twenty
three thirteen. The last time we beat Ireland in three
straight Test matches was twenty twelve into twenty thirteen. Let's

(05:35):
bring in one of our great All Blacks and now
one of the best rugby commentators and analysts, going around
eighty one test matches and eighty eight games in total
for the All Blacks from nineteen ninety six to two
thousand and five. He was, without doubt our first choice halfback.
Now a commentator and rugby panelist for Skysport, Justin Marshall

(05:55):
who joins us from Chicago. Are you enjoying your time
up in Chicago, Marshy want to get Justin Marshall on
the line. Are you enjoying your time there?

Speaker 7 (06:10):
Marshi sensational intro mate. Thank you very much for that.
That's very kind. Absolutely, I am with Chicago. There's such
a vibrant city. It's a sporting city. So look during
the week this week, I've been to the Blackhawks ice
hockey team, I've been to the Chicago Bulls. At the moment,
the World Series of Baseball is on all the bars. Yes,

(06:31):
the Chicago Cubs UN's involved, but still because of the
sporting culture of the city, people are just interested because
it's a baseball game, where it's an ice hockey game
or a basketball game, and the Beers obviously are playing
at the moment, which is the NFL team, So it
kind of reminds me for people back home of like
Melbourne as a sporting city. You know it's got that
amount of teams and that amount of I guess excitement

(06:54):
around the fact that sport is a big part of
what the city does. The weather has been great and
yes it's just been an excellent week. But you know
what the big thing is, mate, driving around the city,
there is advertising all over it for this All Blacks
game against Ireland. You can see it everywhere. Soldier Field
is sold out. So Rugby Union's going to make a

(07:14):
big mark on this city on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
Looking forward to it, all right. Team selection for the
All Blacks Ethan de Groupe, Boden Barrett, Caleb Clark come
back and they missed the last taste against astridis for injury.
Do you like the look of the side, Marshy.

Speaker 8 (07:27):
Yeah, I do.

Speaker 7 (07:28):
Look, obviously there are areas that we're up for discussion
because of what happened in Perth, which was injury enforced.
Awesome players being on rotation rest, you know, like Billy
Potter and twin Quintu Pie came in and played so
well and equally you know, Peter Larco got an opportunity
at number eight. You mentioned Boden Barrett was out injured
as well, so there was always going to be some

(07:48):
debate around where Scott Robertson went with his selections considering
the Test match before at Eden Park. They won that
as well, so it's like, right, does he reward players
or does he stick with what he knows and so
that that was always going to be real interesting when
he named his side. Look, I like the ballance of
the I think probably when I look at it to
Mikey Williams would have to consider himself pretty unlucky. I

(08:10):
thought he was one of the best on the park
in Perth and the scrum looked really good for it
where we started to dominate it and that's set piece
again and he pretty much got rid of will scouting
now to the Chis match there, didn't he nearly on
his own? I thought, you know, he could probably be
one of the unlucky ones as well as Leestifying and
Nuku who made a massive impact. But again Caleb Plark
didn't get anything wrong in his just matched in part

(08:33):
before going off injured. So look, in a nutshell, I
think it's a really good, well balanced team and you know,
the factors they've got to click and gail against an
Island side that is also going to really test them.

Speaker 2 (08:46):
Do you think Quinter Pie could become the first choice
center in this team in the next couple of years.

Speaker 7 (08:52):
Yeah, well, I think you know, there is obviously still
an opportunity for somebody to put a stamp on that jersey.
That's probably the way that I need to word it. Look,
I don't think Billy Pop just a poor job. I
don't think he's played bad rugby. I think he's been
trucking away quite nicely and good on defense and offered plenty.

(09:14):
He's offered plenty on attack. But all of a sudden,
Quintu Pie came into that center jersey and he provided
a bit more punch and he broke tackles. You know,
obviously they've moved on from Reco being a center, and
look in the future, at some stage I'd like to
see them give lessifying a nuclear chance in the midfield
as well. But in answer to your question, after putting
that all of those things into the equation, yeah, Quintu

(09:37):
Pay absolutely he's got a chance to maybe wrestle that
jersey away from from Billy PLoP proper and make it
hard for Scott Robertson to pick anybody else. If he
continues to produce the performances like he did in Perth
in that jersey, he could very well make it one
for him in the future.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
What is the All Blacks future of Rico Yowani.

Speaker 7 (10:00):
Look, I certainly don't feel that they are going to
dismiss him. You know, world class players don't become four
players overnight. Look, I don't necessarily, again, feel that he's
really struggled for form. I just think the way that
the team dynamic is working, that the way that they
want to play, Rico just wasn't quite fitting into that.
But that doesn't mean that he a player like him,
can't adapt and adjust.

Speaker 4 (10:21):
You know.

Speaker 7 (10:22):
Obviously, being stuck back on the wing after playing so
much center over a period of time, it does take.
It does take a little bit of adjusting, you know.
And then again the fact there's a center, you don't
have to deal with the aerial situation at all really
in that jersey. Then all of a sudden you get
put back on the wing and you're getting bombarded and
you need to, you know, change the way that you're

(10:42):
seeing things. On the field, so obviously they felt that
he wasn't quite getting there quickly enough, and they made
some changes and Lee or Carter got a chance on
the wing, and Caleb Clark we know is good in
the air. So look, in a long winded way, mate,
I don't feel that Rico's time is done, but I
think he has some work on and no doubt, being
the professional is he's working on them and he'll still

(11:04):
be looking to put pressure on to get a starting spot.

Speaker 2 (11:07):
You've painted a great picture of Chicago for us, Marshie.
There was a school of thought though, that playing at
a neutral venue doesn't galvanize the All Blacks as much
as playing at a hostile away ground. Is there any
merit to that?

Speaker 7 (11:23):
Look, I certainly feel that the occasion provides you with
the ability to want to go out and entertain and
play well. You know, when you know that the stadiums
sold out, when you know that you've got New Zealanders
traveling from New Zealand, you know, spending their hard earned dollars. Equally,
the Irish are in forced here, a lot of them
have traveled from the UK. And then you've got the

(11:44):
locals want to see rugby for what it is and
experience what it's like to actually see the best teams
in the world going at each other in a test
match on neutral ground. I think the players have got
everything to play for. I don't feel that you know,
the fact that there's no hostility there changes that dynamic.
You know, Like whenever I put the boots on and

(12:05):
was playing it any stadium, you wanted to not only
do the Jersey justice, but you wanted to make sure
that the people that were coming along and have invested
in coming to what you play, that you gave them entertainment.
So I certainly feel that the All Blacks have the
ability to do that. But they'll know the challenge in
front of them, Like at the end of the day,
the last time they were here, Matt, I have never

(12:27):
ever beaten us in the entire history of the game.
Now they are capable of beating us, and they've done
it not just once, but a couple of times. I
think it's three or four times now, haven't they. So
the All Blacks will be very very aware, unlike last time,
that should they be slightly off, they can get bitten.
And that provides plenty of motivation within itself and Ireland.

Speaker 2 (12:47):
I mean they haven't played with their full strength side
since the Six Nations in March, they had a couple
of games when a lot of their guys were over
the lines. Are they more likely to be underdone or
coming in nice and fresh.

Speaker 7 (12:59):
I think they're more likely to be underdone looking at it,
and they've had some personnel changes as well through injury,
you know, so that they've had to adjust to that.
When you see the naming of this side, the consistency
is in the forward pack, no doubt about that. And
that's a formidable forward pack, full of experience and full
of world class players, you know in British and Irish Lions.

(13:20):
And then you've got the halves and Crowley and obviously
Jamis and Gibson. Parker has proven to be one of
the best half backs in the world at the moment.
James Low tends to play some of his best rugby
when he's playing against the all backs in particular, and
you know you've got quality like ring Roads in the midfield,
and then a few new players with the likes of
Osborne been included at fullback because of Hugo Keenan's injury.

(13:43):
Combine that with like what you said, they haven't played
a lot of them played in the Lions, but under
a different environment and with different people around them in
terms of set up. So this is the first time
that they've actually been able to get together again and
go out and play together.

Speaker 8 (13:57):
As a team.

Speaker 7 (13:58):
And Andy Ferrell's back in charge after not being in
charge of them for over a year, so it was
used to be being the coach. Look, yeah, I'm on
the side. I've been underdone and not as prepared as
the All Blacks if I look at it in that respect.

Speaker 2 (14:16):
Just before you go, marsh it is ten years to
the day since the twenty fifteen Rugby World Cup Final.
Would you watch from the commentary box alongside Grant's but
your go body is still like.

Speaker 9 (14:26):
On it fond?

Speaker 2 (14:28):
How fond of your memories of that day at Twickenhom.

Speaker 7 (14:32):
They are brilliant memories and to be fair, you know,
unlike a lot of Rugby World Cup Finals that can
become a real slog. That was an entertainment package at
that Twickenham that day and you know, obviously the old
foe we're up against us and I just feel that,
you know, when you have moments like that and you
have a quality rugby game along with you know those

(14:54):
exciting moments like that. It just feels like it was
yesterday and just feel very privileged to being opposite in
the seat and watched the All Blacks went back to
back Rugby World Cups. You know, that's what the game
is all about and to be able to sort of
feel a part of it by calling the game was awesome.
So hopefully get another one or two more of those,
mate in the future and hopefully calling it a good

(15:17):
All Black win at the weekend as well against what
is a very difficult challenge in beating an Irish side
that will be well motivated after what the All Blacks
did to them at the speaking of World Cups at
the World Cup in the quarter final. They'll be out
for a bit of revenge show.

Speaker 2 (15:31):
It's all spiced up indeed to this indeed, look forward
to your call on Sky on Sunday morning, MARCHI thanks
for joining us on ZB this afternoon.

Speaker 8 (15:38):
Always a pleasure, no problem, No thanks mate.

Speaker 2 (15:40):
That is Justin Marshall joining us All Blacks Island Covers
from eight tomorrow morning on Sky Sport one in Skysport
now kick off at ten past night of course you
can hear the call here on news Talk, said b
as Well twelve twenty two. Right, let's talk this Test match.
As I said at the top of the show, I
usually when we play Ireland, certainly since twenty sixteen, I've

(16:00):
sort of gone in very much with a fifty to
fifty mindset that there is likely to win the Test
match as we are and that's proven to be the case.
As I say, if you include the game at Soldier
Field in twenty sixteen, the last ten have been split
evenly five apiece. We've won the last two. They of
course won that series down here in twenty twenty two,

(16:22):
and World Cups we've had their measure. There was that
Titanic struggle in the twenty twenty three quarter final which
we won twenty eight twenty four. I don't think I've
ever been as nervous watching the All Blacks as I
was that day forty six fourteen, though at the twenty
nineteen Rugby World Cup. What about tomorrow morning? What are
your emotions as far as confidence, optimism, pessimism are concerned.

(16:48):
And the secondary question here, of course is there are
four test matches over the next four weekends. A Grand Slam,
England Island, Scotland, Wales. Not in that order, of course,
is anything less than four from four going to be
a disappointment. It is what so far this year seven
from nine. There was that monumental defeat in Wellington against

(17:13):
South Africa and the first ever loss on Argentinian saul
to the Pumas. Pretty unconvincing in the three Tests against France.
Some good performances in there as well, in particular the
match at Eden Park against South Africa. But I kind
of feel as though for us to have a high

(17:34):
degree of confidence after two years of Razor at the Helm,
they got to win these four Test matches. I got
to win the Grand Slam. Oh eight hundred and eighty
ten eighty our number. Let's get to the lines, God, I.

Speaker 10 (17:44):
Ben hey, Finy, how are you making very good? Ben Hell?
Finally be back in business with the old sports. I'm
getting sicker, Shorten.

Speaker 2 (17:56):
Street, like, I'm sure you're not the only one. Although
I know the show does have its fans.

Speaker 10 (18:06):
It was interesting to hear hear from old Marshy. And
it's ironic too that the halfbacks become commentated.

Speaker 8 (18:16):
But look.

Speaker 10 (18:20):
The oor Blacks, the or Blacks, need to raise the
bar again. We've sort of set the bar and and
the teams, teams like Ireland and teams like Argentina, they've
all come up and meet the bar. We need to
raise it again if we want to keep our status
as far as bringing out the best in the world

(18:43):
as far as rugby goes.

Speaker 2 (18:45):
I feel as that the bar has been raised by others,
actually been in particular South Africa. Well, yeah, I know
what you're saying.

Speaker 10 (18:53):
With with with the game in Wellington, So yeah, we
need to raise it again. But maybe maybe all the
all the interest in rugby over in Chicago has come
about from shame thing Gisberger booting that rug ball around
that wasn't so pointy? Is there is there rugu ball?

Speaker 9 (19:14):
Maybe?

Speaker 10 (19:16):
I just I just think the or Blecks are steering
up at the mountain. I hope they go well, I
hope it's hope it's a clean sweet Yeah, yeah, it's
time will tell the h Looking forward to the game
tomorrow evening with Kiwi's and Tonga, I think the Keywis

(19:39):
will take it out. But I think Sama is going
to clean up this championship going forward. Just quietly.

Speaker 2 (19:49):
Yeah, yeah, I was surprised being to see them beat
Tonga so convincingly. I know that had a game against
the Kiwis to kind of get themselves into gear. Tongue
hadn't had that advantage. But when you're thinking about Tongue
beating us last year and how imposing they looked, I
was surprised at the margin of that victory by some

(20:09):
more over Tonga. So tong Are against the Kiwis tomorrow
is going to be all on, isn't it? At Eden Park.
We'll have a good focus on that tomorrow afternoon on
the show mate. Thanks for calling in our eight hundred
and eighty ten eighty is our number. Twelve twenty seven
is the time. It's funny, isn't it. We haven't had
the All Blacks around for a month or so and

(20:29):
they all almost kind of slip out of our consciousness.
You know, we're so deeply invested during the Rugby Championship
and now this indy year tourist kind of rolled around
not necessarily unnoticed, but there have been other things attracting
our attention sports wise. But it's here now. So how
are we feeling about it?

Speaker 10 (20:47):
Are you?

Speaker 2 (20:47):
Are you feeling invested in it? I mean I am. I.
I love the All Blacks. Can't wait for tomorrow morning,
can't wait to see how Ireland are because as I
said to Marsha, you know they they haven't played together
since March eighteen. Of their players were involved the British
and Irish Lions, but they had different players around them.

(21:09):
So when Andy Ferrell brings them together, does he bring
together a team that is underdone or does he bring
together a team that is absolutely chomping at the bit
And what does that mean as far as the All
Blacks are concerned. Bring Pope before one out of Ireland
with his assessment, but yours is just as important. Oh
eight hundred and eighty ten eighty twelve twenty eight, Mike,
please hold there with you after this A speareline for
you was boy, If you want to jump on, Oh

(21:29):
eight hundred and eighty ten eighty back in a moment

Speaker 2 (21:43):
Be twenty nine away from one talking All Blacks Island
tomorrow morning, geo, Mike.

Speaker 11 (21:47):
Yeah, good biddy, Hey listen, I'll be very disappointed if
we don't win by thirty or forty points because Razers
should have his combinations stored up by now and Ireland
have hardly had a game together this.

Speaker 2 (22:00):
Year while thirty to forty, so if they win by
say twenty five, you'll be a you'll be a bit disappointed.

Speaker 11 (22:07):
Well, I've got expectations, I can tell.

Speaker 2 (22:09):
I can tell because I've.

Speaker 11 (22:12):
Been let down this year mate, And you know, to
be fair, there's a lot of you know, roomors swirling
around about the coaching set up and stuff and Jamie
Jenson coming into the to the second fift themes set
up and that kind of thing. So you know he's
got to get his act to get it and it's
got to be tomorrow morning.

Speaker 2 (22:31):
I do like the side, I must say, Mike, that's
been chosen and if you're looking for cohesion and in
a back line that could fire, I do like it.

Speaker 6 (22:40):
You know.

Speaker 2 (22:41):
Quinta Pyre obviously has held his place after as good
showing against the wallabyi'es over in Perth with Jordy Barret
alongside Caleb Clark. Back there Leroy Carter I think it's
been terrific. Will Jordan, their camera, gud and Boat and Barrett.
I think there is certainly the artillery there to score
the tries that you're talking about. Yeah, look, I think
it might be a bit closer than that, you know,

(23:03):
but I am very curious to see what Island are like.
And you know, as we've said, you know, they haven't
played together for a long time, so quite curious. I
don't know about you how they'll be tomorrow.

Speaker 11 (23:15):
Yeah, also when I see these young second riders really
come of age on this tour and you know, really
assert themselves because we need some up and coming talent,
you know.

Speaker 2 (23:24):
Yeah, now a good point. Josh Lord is off the
bench tomorrow. I thought Sam Dowry might get to go,
but Fabian Holland. It's funny, isn't it. You know, Holland
played those first three Test matches against France and then
asually also played in Argentina. But then kinda they moved
to poor Vote backed into the second road, didn't they.
So he's kind of had a sporadic opportunity since then.

(23:45):
But yeah, no, we've got some I mean, we've got
our locking stocks are pretty good, really aren't they, Mike.
I mean I think you know, you say this might
be an opportunity without Vale there, without too we pilotter
there for some for some steps forwards for some of
these blokes as well.

Speaker 11 (23:57):
Yeah, well they've got to and you know, we've got
to compete with the likes of Cerfrica and they've got
some big units coming out of us, and you know,
we've got to produce some guys and get them on
the bench person stuff and getting through the system.

Speaker 2 (24:09):
On your Mike, give us the old tomorrow mate after
the game and we can we can compare notes. But yeah, look, look,
I hope you're right. I hope we hope we get
what you're suggesting. A burg big win, would it would
be great to see the all Blacks sort of really,
you know, make a statement. I look back at the
Games this year and there hasn't been a statement, really

(24:30):
has there. The best performance of the year was South
Africa at Eden Park. I think that's that's fairly unanimous.
The three Tests against France, there was that good half
in Wellington and the second Test, but other than that
it was fairly unconvincing against an under strength French side.
We split the Tests in Argentina there was the lost

(24:51):
to South Abraham Wellington. I think Australian Reading Park was good.
And then over in Perth, I think, you know, a
serviceable performance, but we haven't had We haven't had that
all Blacks performance this year where we say, right now,
I can see what the plan is. Remember last year
against Ireland in Dublin twenty three point thirteen, we won

(25:14):
that game and I think going into that end of
year tour most people were of the opinion that we
would probably split those test matches England, Island, France, Italy.
We all thought would beat Italy, which we did. I
think a lot of people thought we would lose two
of the three tests against England, Island and France. Fact
as we beat England at Twickenham, then beat Ireland in

(25:37):
Dublin and there was that one point lost to France
and Paris Hi Jason from memory, says Sam. The first
loss at Soldier Field was against an Island side that
hadn't played together for months, making the loss more jarring.
So I put no stock in an underdone Ireland team.
The jury is out on this New Zealand coaching crew

(25:58):
with an inconsistent win loss win record. Why would the
next four matches be any different? Andy Farrell is a
wily operator. It'll be absorbing contest. Thank you, Sam. Yet
it's a good point you make that Test match back
in twenty sixteen. I was having a look back at
the side that played that day. Joe Moody, Dane Colzowen Franks,

(26:21):
Jerome Kaina locked the scrum with Patrick Tuipolotu, Liam Squire,
Sam Cain, Karen Reid, Aaron Smith was half back, Bowden
Barrett first five, Ryan Crotty and George Moala in the centers,
Julian Savier on the left wing by sucking the holo
on the right, Ben Smith at fallback off the bench
that day, Cody Taylor offered a fuss sep Charlie Farmer, Winner,

(26:43):
Scott Barrett on Test debut, Artie Savier, t J. Pettinatter,
Aaron Cruden and Malachai FEKATOA yeah, a few of those
players three, I think Artie Savier, Scott Barrett, Bowden Barrett.
We'll back up tomorrow morning. How are they feeling about
this in Ireland? We'll find out at a moment twenty
four away from one. Brent Pope going to join us

(27:03):
with an Irish view after this on Weekend Sport.

Speaker 1 (27:07):
The Big Issues on and after Field Call eight hundred
and eighty ten eighty Weekends Forward with Jason.

Speaker 2 (27:13):
Pine and GJ.

Speaker 1 (27:14):
Gunnerholmes, New Zealand's first trusted home builder, News Talks it'd baby.

Speaker 12 (27:18):
And Mackenzie texs that into.

Speaker 13 (27:20):
The stands a statement fans with the your backs say
no poker.

Speaker 9 (27:26):
The world number one Zeila in the All.

Speaker 5 (27:29):
Blacks and Irish hits again twenty three thirteen they in
the Islands and beat Runs in Dublin.

Speaker 2 (27:39):
And nineteen that was a year ago. A candidate probably
for best performance of the Scott Robertson Era. For tomorrow morning,
Ireland's usual captain Kaylin Doris is going to come off
the bench. He returns from a shoulder injury that's kept
him out since May, forcing him to miss the British
and Irish Lines tour of Australia. Dan Sheehan will captain
the side from hooker. When I want to get a

(28:00):
read on Irish rugby, there's one guy I normally get
in touch with. New Zealand born former rugby player with Otago,
top level coach in Ireland best selling author in one
of Ireland's best known and most respected rugby voices, Brent Pope.
Pope great to have the chance to tet to you.
How accurately can we assess where Ireland are at given
that their full strength side hasn't played together since the

(28:23):
end of the Six Nations at the back end of March.

Speaker 13 (28:27):
Yeah, I think there's two ways of looking at that, Jason.
I know everybody's saying here as they're probably saying in
news there, and that this Irish team is probably coming
in a bit undercooked, and yes, on paper they probably are.
But I sometimes think that the Irish.

Speaker 9 (28:43):
Like to have it that way.

Speaker 13 (28:44):
They like to come into matches as underdogs because when
they've been favorites over the last few years, they've consequently.

Speaker 9 (28:50):
Gone on to lose no stage games.

Speaker 13 (28:52):
Favorites in twenty nineteen number one in the world saying
as going into the World Cup, you could have argued
that there were maybe favorites for that game against the
or Bucks and they come unstuck.

Speaker 9 (29:02):
So it's where do you think you take.

Speaker 13 (29:04):
One game that lends the played against Munsel where they
lost heavily. That seems to be overriding everybody's decision. In
my opinion, they've still got a pretty good pack. I
think they might be a bit weakened in the back line,
and I think yes, you'd have to say that New
Zealand are in better shape at this time of the year.
But that's not to say this game is not going

(29:25):
to be tight. It always is traditionally, and I think
that Andy Farrell has a good ability to get the
players up for match. He's a master coach in his
regards of team spurt and team camarader and all that.
He focuses on that a lot, so he'll have the
players up for this match.

Speaker 9 (29:41):
Don't worry about that.

Speaker 2 (29:42):
Let's drill a bit deeper into the side. Then what
do you make of the team that Andy Farrell has
name for this test?

Speaker 9 (29:49):
Well, a bit of a surprise.

Speaker 13 (29:50):
I think he's picked that the on form team as
far as the championship over here is concerned. The ERC
Stuart McCluskey would have been one that people may have question,
but he's a big guy. He's probably six four, one
hundred and ten Cage's I think he's been selected to
do the Bundy archy role. I think Bundy has come

(30:10):
into the kind of last years. He's thirty six, there
has come to the last years of this kind of
so he's picked like for like in the sense because
Gary Ringrose is the sort of Conrad Smith type of player.
He's a kind of thoroughbred in the back line what
they needed inside center or second five as a bludgeon.

Speaker 9 (30:27):
And I think that.

Speaker 13 (30:28):
Stuart McCluskey's form has been good for Ulster Championship so
far and I think he probably deserves a spot he can.
He hasn't got as many caps as his aids suggest,
so he's probably coming into the primers careers. He's not
as overdone as probably overworked as Bundy is. But you know,
the pretty good, exciting back line. Tom O'Brien a real

(30:49):
speech to good in the air in particular, and that'll
be important against New Zealand because that's probably where they've
been a bit weak in their own championship, so he's
good in their James low course brings his rugby knowledge
from New Zealand and his big boot and then you know,
so it's a pretty good back line if get enough ball.
But that would be the worry because I think that

(31:10):
iland set piece game hasn't functioned as well for the
last year in particular, so they've got to get that right.
They've got a number of world class forwards in their pack,
so I think they'll hold kind of sway the whold
equality in that area. I just think that the or
Blecks may be better conditioned out wide for Ireland this time.

Speaker 2 (31:31):
Do you think there would have been any temptation to
bring Kaylen Doris straight back into the starting site.

Speaker 9 (31:37):
Absolutely?

Speaker 13 (31:38):
I mean, I think Kaylen Dorris is probably the apex
of world number eight and he's a fantastic player. Watched
Kaylen since he was a schoolboy. He's a kind of
a Kieran Reed type player Jason. He's very intelligent, runs
great lines, and he belies is kind of a he's
a more kind of about six' four and he's kind
of more lightweight than the kind Of Buck shelford molded

(32:00):
player of. Something but he's a very intelligent player and
he runs great. LINES i just think that it was
probably a bit of a risk to staff and because
he's obviously his conditioning despite him coming back from injury
well and training for the last two, weeks he's not
at that level. Yet to blame international, rugby especially against
The All, blacks SO i think he will come onto
the pitch at some stage and he's a good option

(32:22):
to come on in the second half and the game
becomes a BIT loosei BUT i think that they don't
lose anything.

Speaker 9 (32:27):
In their back.

Speaker 13 (32:28):
Row in, fact if you looked at the back row,
selections they've probably got more experience and More dynams and
in some ways than The.

Speaker 9 (32:35):
All blacks back, row BECAUSE i think that's been an area.

Speaker 13 (32:37):
Of concern for me for the last couple of. Years
but The All blacks haven't settled on a back row
that they know. About Ardie savi has gone back to.
Seven Peter laki gets his fans at, eight of, course
and then the number, six AND i think they've still
been looking for a big kind of number six that
can take them to the world cuff AND i don't
know whether they've quite got there, yet but.

Speaker 9 (33:00):
That would be something That New zealand. Rugby you're looking.

Speaker 2 (33:02):
At this game's In, chicago of. Course does that favor
The Irish, Popey.

Speaker 9 (33:08):
Well it favors of them a sol as the.

Speaker 13 (33:10):
CROWD i was there at the last, match what ten
years ago or something like, that and it was a fantastic.
Occasion every plane that's coming out Of manchester And liverpool
And ireland is going straight to that, match.

Speaker 9 (33:21):
So New zealand fans will be well. Outnumbered you can expect.

Speaker 13 (33:24):
That so that'll give this sort of sixteenth man An ireland's.
FAVOR i just think the timing of this game for
The irish team you've got it depends on whether the
players of which there are eight of, them and the
starting team depends on whether the players come back from
the lines tore a bit, shaded or when they come
back and they've had a bit of a rest and
they more energize that that will be key because what

(33:48):
we saw in The Leinster monster game when we saw
a lot of players struggling at that that was the
first game they'd come to get.

Speaker 9 (33:54):
Us so the combinations won't be there For.

Speaker 13 (33:56):
Ireland and also there may be a lack of game
title top game time for some of the, players but
that you, Know iland had this ability sometimes you just
pull these games out of the hat when they're gone
to going and his underdogs people are already saying over, here
you know they'll get, walloped and that that's just What
Andy farrell wants to.

Speaker 9 (34:15):
Hear he wants to hear that news because.

Speaker 13 (34:16):
He'll go back to the players and, say come, on,
guys you, know let's get.

Speaker 9 (34:19):
Up there's just one game.

Speaker 13 (34:21):
Something give me all you've, got because if you look
at their, team especially out front of the world class front,
ROW i, Mean Dan shean is probably up there as
the best hook in the. World Tiger burn is probably
going to be the world player this.

Speaker 9 (34:33):
Year is to.

Speaker 13 (34:33):
Jest bed is a six foot six and a wonderful.
Athlete and then you've got you, Know josh vanderfle World
player of The year a couple of years. Ago so
they have a good pack and they've given some part
and get the ball in front of, them they can
do some. Damage is whether or not they can last
eighty minutes against an all black side that hopefully is
going to want to look to A Grand slam this

(34:54):
year BECAUSE i think that you, Know New zealand rugby
this year watching it over here hasn't been hugely, impressive
even though the wind record is quite. Good BUT i
don't think they've clicked just, Shit so is this the
hard time for them to? Click probably because they've picked
a pretty strong. Side stronger SIDE i think that they
could have. Selected you could argue about So tt being

(35:16):
at number eight and another couple of, positions BUT i
Think quintupi deserves his opportunity was great and that a
couple of games THAT i saw of them for The All.
Blacks but so, yeah it'll BE i think it'll be
tighter than people. THINK i think that you, know there'll
be one score and It traditionally these games have always been.
Tight and despite people, saying, oh The All blocks are ranked,

(35:36):
FAVORITES i don't quite see it that.

Speaker 2 (35:38):
Way just to Finish popey from a wider, viewpoint where
do you evaluate Where ireland are sort of midway through
The Rugby World cup cycle as we look towards twenty twenty.

Speaker 13 (35:49):
Seven, yeah good, question because that's what everybody's asking over.

Speaker 9 (35:54):
HERE i think that that's sort Of they're lots of.
Far there's not as far in the development phase as
Say france And. England you, know.

Speaker 13 (36:03):
Those both sides would scare me for the Next World,
cup Especially england BECAUSE i think they've got a number
of young players that have come through last season the
same As france did a couple of years. Ago they've
promoted a lot of guys from their under twenty under
twenty one, System SO i think that's rent Great rugby
is in a place at the Moment. IRELAND i think

(36:24):
they're going to struggle a bit with the age profile
because you, know there've a number of players into their
early thirties that will be a couple of years on
and the Next World.

Speaker 9 (36:32):
Cup so you're suddenly looking at guys.

Speaker 13 (36:34):
Like Gibson park and that being thirty four or thirty,
five do they make it to the Next World? Cup
you Know, Henshaw these guys that have been around the
block a long, time you Know BUNDY, arki these sort
of players that have been.

Speaker 9 (36:46):
Crucial at the Last World.

Speaker 13 (36:47):
Cup so we don't see too many players coming through
just at the. Moment plenty Of fords and plenty of big,
guys which is, promising you, know plenty of athletic young
guys coming through The lynx to convey a belt or
coming Through.

Speaker 9 (36:59):
Monster SO i think.

Speaker 13 (37:00):
They're well the wall on top of it. THERE i
just worry about certain. Positions scrumhart would be a bit
of a. Worry you, know it's casey at that level
Of Gibson, park Because Gibson, park as you, know has
probably been you, know one of the top scrum halfs
of the last five years or six years playing in
the in the world. Game SO i don't know Whether
casey fills that spot just shit they still sort of

(37:23):
there's an argument going over here who starts at out?

Speaker 9 (37:25):
Half is It prendergas Or?

Speaker 13 (37:27):
Crowley, Yes crowley gets there this time because of his
performance for months Against, leinster but there's a school of
thought That prendergas brings a better passing game into. It
then you've got to look to the midfield where they
don't seem to have too many kind of players that
are coming through the. Ranks and we're only two years,
out So Andy farrell has got to probably look at
this year as being the kind of experimental year and

(37:50):
give some of these players games in The Six nations
and the next year's tour, whatever and just to see
if they're, ready because you don't want to go into
A World cup with players only having played maybe half dozen.
Internationals you want them going in and playing twenty or
thirty internationals between there and.

Speaker 9 (38:05):
NOW i would.

Speaker 2 (38:07):
Say sort of a.

Speaker 9 (38:09):
Six or seven out of.

Speaker 13 (38:11):
TEN i would See New zealand and maybe be a
bit the same to be honest And i'd say they're
about the same.

Speaker 9 (38:15):
As six or seven out of. Ten they've still got
a few positions to nail.

Speaker 13 (38:18):
Down they've, scored you, know their midfield is a bit
of a bit of a worry for, me has been
for the last couple of. Years the composition of their back,
row Which New zealm has always been strong and Every
World cup they've won they've had a really strong back.
ROW i don't think they've quite discovered that combination, yet
But i've got two years to do. It so its Like,
ireland BUT i put them on to the Level peggins

(38:40):
where they.

Speaker 2 (38:40):
Are it makes this test really really. Intriguing always appreciate
your terrific analysis and Inside, popey thanks for joining, us, Mate,
yeah thanks.

Speaker 9 (38:49):
Very, much and just to say it's the target boys.

Speaker 13 (38:52):
HERE i watch got up last week and really proud
of the season they had and you, know congratulations a.
Canopy BUT i think it was a cracking season all
around THE. NPC i really enjoyed it this.

Speaker 2 (39:03):
Year yeah us. Too Thanks. Pope Bring pope there out
Of ireland with his analysis of The irish side ahead
of This test match. Tomorrow interesting thoughts there AND i
think you Know he's, right isn't? He midway through The
World cup. CYCLE i think Both ireland and The All,
blacks and probably most of the teams in the, world
with the exception Of South, africa are just kind of
finding their, way aren't. They and that's what you, know

(39:25):
if we hang international rugby On World, cups that's what
these years.

Speaker 6 (39:29):
Are.

Speaker 2 (39:29):
Four, yes you want to win Rugby championships and Six
nations and LED Us Low, cups. Etc but, really you,
know if you think, back can you name the last
ten winners of The Rugby championship in? Order can you
name the last Ten Six nations winners in? ORDER i

(39:50):
think most of us can probably name every winner of
The Rugby World cup going back to nineteen eighty. Seven

Speaker 4 (44:16):
You nice to see you, Too, Piney thank.

Speaker 2 (44:17):
You let's start at the. Start when and how did
your motorsport journey?

Speaker 15 (44:22):
Begin it took off at six years. Old my old
man raced, himself SO i grew up around a racetrack
for as long AS i can, remember smelling the fumes
being pushed around on the prem by mum most, likely
so he introduced me with the sport and go, karts
just how everyone else. Starts In Mount, Wellington Mount worllington
Cart club which is no longer, around but, yeah that's

(44:43):
WHERE i first got introduced to, it AND i guess
caught the bug just like every other racing driver, does
and the love and the passion for the sport grew from.

Speaker 2 (44:50):
There what's karting like as a six year?

Speaker 4 (44:52):
Old it's, frightening to be.

Speaker 15 (44:55):
Honest my very first, TIME i remember like a twenty
second thirty second go cut. Dragger took me two minutes
to go around. There probably didn't even use the. GAS
i just putted around there AND i was scared to.
Death but, yeah and that's an incredible. Experience jumped straight
into the deep. End and, yeah never looked back.

Speaker 2 (45:11):
Since, Really and so when did it sort? OF i
mean you're a six year old. BOY i mean over
the next what two or three, years you started to
get a real taste for, it something that you really
really grabbed.

Speaker 15 (45:21):
You, yes, yeah my dad AND i would go up
and down the country from car trak to Cart trek and, we,
yeah we loved. It we just grew a love and
a passion for.

Speaker 6 (45:30):
IT i.

Speaker 15 (45:31):
Did he's always loved, motorsport and, yeah it just became
serious slowly but, surely.

Speaker 4 (45:37):
UNTIL i was about, thirteen twelve years.

Speaker 15 (45:40):
OLD i think WHEN i stepped over to the international
To australia started competing over, there and Then italy WHEN
i was thirteen at The World. Finals so, yeah just
escalated quite quickly after having managed to have some success
here In New.

Speaker 2 (45:52):
Zealand so and as you were getting really good at,
karting were you starting to think about moving up from?
KRTING i know cartings were a lot of you, know
motorsport drivers start and a lot of them stay, there you,
know but were you starting to, think even at the
age of, thirteen what might be next for?

Speaker 15 (46:07):
You, YES i always had ambitions THAT i wanted to
make a creat of motorspoard and sitting on the couch
watching the likes Of Scott, Dixon shan Van gisberg And
scott McLaughlin and supercars And indyka gave me that inspiration
AND i wanted to chase them and head towards that
as the end. Goal so, yeah there was always the
drive to move on from carting into race cars and
that began at about fifteen And formula forwards and that

(46:30):
was that was a big. Step, YEAH i still remember
it was only a few years, ago but big learning
curve and quite daunting, again but, yeah luckily somehow took
it like a fish to. Water and, YEAH i mentioned
to have success here as, well so, yeah it's been
a very kind of quite a fast.

Speaker 2 (46:48):
Rise, yeah, indeed tell us about the challenges of moving,
class but ALSO i, mean are there principles of driving
that remain constant regardless of what you're.

Speaker 15 (46:57):
In, yes your go, karting what you learned there is
carries all the way through through your motor racing. Career,
yeah that's the best kind of school for motor racing
drivers And watson. CARNING i, think of, course the way
the cars are very, different new cars to, cards very,
different but the. SAME i guess mindset mentality applies when

(47:17):
you jump behind the, wheel AND i guess the stuff
you do off track to to have success on, track
it's it's all the same as, well you, know dedicating,
yourself the, discipline the, training the mental, work so the
engineering mind you have to. Build so, yeah it's it
all correlates right through to the.

Speaker 2 (47:34):
Pinnacles tell us about some of that that that off track,
work you, say you, know the, discipline the mental, stuff
what does that? Involve it involves a lot off track for.

Speaker 15 (47:44):
Me, yeah MENTAL i really pride to put a lot
of time innefit and energy INTO i think motorsport is
a mental, game like like all, sport but especially, Motorsport
and so, yeah the mental. Piece i'm very lucky to
be working with a top performance, Coach shamee To connogley
From Create leadp's been instrumental in my development and the
mind piece. Mental there's obviously the physical fitness. Side people

(48:08):
have the reason to believe that motor racing is not
very physical or hard. Work you just sit down and,
drive but it is, challenging you, know the g, forces
the stereo is hard to kind of hustle those single
seaters around a. Racetrack so those, two and finally there's
the business, piece WHICH i think many people don't really
are aware of that for me to be able to

(48:30):
even get on the track in the first, place a
whole lot of you, know time and effort and money
needs to be raised to be able to be. There so,
yeah my life eighty percent of, it AS i described
to people as being a, businessman and twenty percent is
actually being able to enjoy the part of being a racing.
Driver so, yeah it's quite.

Speaker 2 (48:47):
Interesting, absolutely it. Is so you're getting used TO i
mean jeep as you speak very Well for a, teenager
you're used to sort, OF i guess selling your story
to people who might be able to help you in some,
way shape or.

Speaker 4 (48:58):
Form, yes, yeah that's how it.

Speaker 15 (49:00):
GOES i, mean, Yeah i'm just ANOTHER qb racing who's
trying to do. That but before, Me Scott dick's And
Liam lawson they've had to go through the exact same,
thing you, know sell, themselves pitch to potential, investors sponsors
to get them on board their journey and without those
people they wouldn't be where they are. Today so that's
the Phase i'm going through right. Now you, Know I've
New Zealand Grand prix champion last year and now looking

(49:22):
to take it overseas and you know had success In
japan And america winning races there and, YEAH i want
to get to the pinnacle of indyicar and to you
how to get? That AS i said as, Fundraising so
a year In indie next is two and a half
Million New zealand, dollars so it's it's not. Cheap and
you know the route Of formula One formula two it's

(49:43):
five million dollars a, year so the finances it takes is,
yeah it's. Incomprehendible and, yeah that's What i'm working on
every single, day fighting tooth and nail to raise just
as many dollars as possible to get myself back on the.

Speaker 2 (49:56):
Racetrack all, Right we're going to get all your contact
details up on our socials to make sure people can
know how to get in touch if they think they
can Help yours is a sport of very fine, margins,
lim isn't, it with genuine risk. Attached if you make a,
mistake how do you deal with?

Speaker 4 (50:11):
That it's.

Speaker 15 (50:13):
Challenging that goes back to the mental. Piece that's What
shane AND i work on week and week out with
how to go about. IT i think for, me my
situation is different to most drivers where it almost means
a little bit more every TIME i get out on
track BECAUSE i turn up to THE raceio thinking, well
this could mean my last shot BECAUSE i don't have
the money the resource to be at the next. Race
so it adds to the PreCure That, okay this week

(50:34):
AND i really have to perform and do the job
and be a front runner and stand. Out and you
know when you do, that you really push. Yourself your
mistakes happen and consequences, come like you're having a, Crash
AND i Guess i'm not scared of having a, crash you.
KNOW i think if you're a racing, driver you can't
be otherwise you're you're not going to be at the.

(50:54):
Front but, yeah when it, happens it's, yeah it's it's a,
CONSEQUENCE a, yeah you have to deal.

Speaker 2 (51:00):
With have you had any bad?

Speaker 4 (51:01):
ONES i?

Speaker 6 (51:02):
Have.

Speaker 15 (51:02):
Yes WHEN i was in go, KARTS i THINK i
would have been eight or nine years, old the top
of my finger came. Off it was hanging off by
a thread in a go kart accident and wrote a.
Ruler so that's a goodie that my dad AND i
love to laugh.

Speaker 4 (51:16):
About But i've been actually quite. FORTUNATE i haven't had many.

Speaker 15 (51:19):
Majors i've had another One Hireland's Motor Sport park through
a high speed. Section it would have been over one
hundred and fifty k straight into a concrete, wall so
that was another. Goodie but, yeah so every driver has
sort of stories like, these but, No i've been fortunate
to not have any kind of life threatening incidents and.

Speaker 2 (51:35):
Injuries does your mum? Worry she?

Speaker 4 (51:37):
Does she, does AND i don't blame. Her she's a real.

Speaker 15 (51:39):
Warrior but on the other, side you, know When i'm
doing well and punching at the front and, winning she
she's you, know the first person on the sidelines to
be jumping up and down and screaming and cheering on
so wonderful.

Speaker 2 (51:50):
Stuff you've described every, MUM i think every mum.

Speaker 16 (51:52):
Of a.

Speaker 2 (51:54):
Young sports person watch the attraction Of Indy.

Speaker 15 (51:57):
Car the attraction to in the car for me is,
Well Scott dixon IS i, Said Tom Ta guinee's the
inspiration for. ME i MEAN i was sitting on the couch,
MAN i vividly remember it watching they five, hundred and
The indy five hundred is honestly probably the biggest, appeal
being the biggest motor race in the. World four hundred
thousand people come to that race in. Person it's an

(52:19):
incredible event and you know the iconic pouring the glass
of milk all over yourself after you've won. It so,
yeah that's that's a source of inspiration Why. IndyCar to
be Honest formula, ONE i think for every drivers the
dreamed when they start off in go, cuts but the
reality is to come From New zealand to get Into formula.

Speaker 4 (52:39):
One it's it's near and.

Speaker 15 (52:40):
POSSIBLE i, MEAN i Know Liam lawson has gone and
done it and it's so cool to. See but the
finances it, TAKES i, mean AS i, said five million
dollars a year In formula two and before, that you
know it's it's tens of millions to even have a
crack At formula. One so, yeah it's it's the. Money
it's the financials that kind of turned me away from
that that in goal and look Towards Indy car and,

(53:03):
Yeah IndyCar is still. FANTASTIC i, MEAN i love the.
Racing it's much better to watch Than Formula, one much more,
competitive and there's a new winner every other, race and
you know the fact they are on street, circuits road
circus and also, Oval so, yeah it's it's a really
cool and exciting, WORLD i.

Speaker 2 (53:18):
Believe have you had the chance to connect with or
even Meet Scott?

Speaker 15 (53:21):
Dixon, Yes scott this YEAR i connected with and he
stepped in kind of a little bit like a mentor
in a small, way which was amazing because there's no
better person to have kind of in your corner because
he's gone and done it exactly What i'm trying to do.
Myself so, yeah to be able to lean on him

(53:42):
was amazing and he's a great DUDE. Sti let's still
A kiwi your, heart which is great to. See so,
Yeah i've really enjoyed connecting with him and staying in
touch with him as the year's gone.

Speaker 2 (53:50):
On you look At scotty, McLoughlin who's An IndyCar now
and he came through the supercars. Route is that something
that you've? Considered it?

Speaker 15 (53:57):
Is it is now because you Know indy next to
me next year is in doubt in terms of IF
i can get on to the, grid back to the money.
Piece i'm unable to raise. That so, yeah supercars doing
what scot mcgloughlin and ALSO svg have done by, yeah
going Through supercars to move on to THE U east
AND nascar And Indy car is a real option for
me and Something i'm. CONSIDERING i actually have a test

(54:20):
In australia in a month's time and A super two,
car so the old generation, Supercars so, Yeah i'm gonna
get my first taste of it of a touring, car
a tin. Top i've been a single seed demand my whole,
career and, yeah supercars excites. ME i mean there's there's
Young kiwi's doing so well over, There Ryan, Wood Matthew,
payin so to see what they've gone and done as
juniors now be yet winning races there is it's motivating

(54:43):
and yeah he would love to would love to have
a dabble with supercars and see WHAT i can.

Speaker 2 (54:47):
Do what about That barethurst race and the other the other?

Speaker 4 (54:49):
Week it was pretty.

Speaker 2 (54:50):
Unbelievable, man what are you thinking something? There watching?

Speaker 9 (54:53):
That are?

Speaker 2 (54:53):
You are you putting yourself in the driver's seat in
situations like? That, yeah a little.

Speaker 15 (54:57):
BIT i MEAN i. Wouldn't you still can't even put
yourself on the seat of those. Guys what they were
going through it was. Manic but, yeah that was an
awesome race and again for a key we to win
it once, again that's. Awesome but, Yeah bathurst one, thousand
that's a race like The indy five. Hundred you just
dream as a young fellow that you're going to get
there and be able to bird a fight for the.
Win so, yeah that's that's on the bucket.

Speaker 4 (55:17):
List all.

Speaker 2 (55:18):
Right you mentioned a trip To. Australia what else is
coming up in the next little while for you to.

Speaker 15 (55:22):
Be honest with. You that's the racing Activity i've got
at the. Moment opportunities lined up for the rest of
the year over The New zealand Some i'm just going
to be working, hard hustling to raise funding and get
partners on board the mission to be honest with You. Piney,
YEAH i WISH i had on track opportunities, left right
and sinder coming at. Me but for those to, come,

(55:42):
YEAH i need to drum up the support to be
able to for those opportunities to come my. Way so,
yeah it's gonna be a very busy summer for. Me
it's been a, busy busy year full of. It so,
yeah just continuing on what's already been.

Speaker 2 (55:55):
Doing, man it's Been it's been so good to meet.
YOU i feel like As i'm talking to you That
i'm talking to somebody to get the start of what's
going to be a really exciting. Journey well not the,

Speaker 17 (56:30):
In.

Speaker 2 (56:30):

(57:35):
Wellington we're in about thirty seven. Minutes the third and
final one Day international between the Black caps And england
is under. Way Michael Brace will Black caps all round
are going to join us to preview that.

Speaker 1 (57:45):
One One grudge Hold Ngage Weekend sport With Jason paine
AND Tj, Gunners New zealand's most trusted o.

Speaker 2 (57:54):
Builder news talks THE b one twenty six On Weekend.
SPORT a couple on, Text, pinty what an impressive and
eloquent Guy liam is for such a young. Man may
he go far in motor? Racing another one, here what
a champion he is and we'll be, yeah totally. AGREE
i just it's just occurred to me Who liam's skeets
reminds me Of Chris. WOOD i remember Meeting Chris wood

(58:16):
when he was a teenager just making his way in the,
game and he spoke with the same level headedness and
eloquence and quiet determination THAT i just saw From Liam,
skeets and we all know What Chris wood has gone
on to. Achieve it just occurred to me as AS

(58:38):
i was sort of listening to him as he was.
Leaving he sounds Like Chris. Wood steven, says cheep is,
Poney that youngster doesn't make it all the way in.
Motorsport he speaks well enough to Have hoskin looking over his.
Shoulder very impressive young, man is all The kiwi racers
seemed to. Be, YES i think he'd probably rather be
behind the wheel than in THIS zb, Studio but you're,
right he certainly speaks very very. Well just updating you

(59:02):
on the baseball and innings each between The dodgers and
The Blue jay's not score into the top of the
second we go at nillall, remembering of, course The Blue
jays have to, well if they win this, game they
win The World. Series The dodgers have to win it
to keep the series. Alive the Black caps have sewn
up their three Match One Day international series Against england

(59:24):
with a game to. Spare victory in the first two
matches leaves them seeking a clean. Sweep when they played
the third and final match At Sky stadium this afternoon
from two. O'clock all Rounder Michael bracewell played a major
role in The game one win at Bay oval. Seven,
paul that's a great shot That i'll bring up Fifty

(59:45):
bracewell and the fun Third One Day international fifty for.
HIM a run of ball fifty one From Michael bracewell
helping Take New zealand from a somewhat precarious sixty six
for four to reach their winning target of two hundred
and twenty four with thirteen overs to spare for a
four wicket Winning game. One it was even more convincing
In game two In hamilton On, Wednesday New zealand Bowling

(01:00:07):
england out for one hundred and seventy five and thirty
six overs and overhauling that target with seventeen overs to
spare to win by five. Wickets Michael brace well as
well As, michael thanks for taking the time when you've
been reviewing the first two. Matches has there been a
feeling of positivity and satisfaction that you have won both

(01:00:28):
of those matches relatively? Comfortably?

Speaker 9 (01:00:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 17 (01:00:31):
ABSOLUTELY i think as a team we've sort of just
spoken about trying to stick to what we do well
as a, group and that's sort of a just adapting
to the conditions that are in front of. Us, so,
yeah another opportunity today to get out there and try
and adapt on the fly and come up with another good.

Speaker 2 (01:00:48):
Performance when you talk about doing that adapting on the,
fly being, flexible you, KNOW i guess reacting to it
to a match. Situation are there certain guys in the
team and maybe you're one of them who drive, that you,
know that decision.

Speaker 17 (01:01:02):
Making, YEAH i think well with the seam dolers generally
In New, zealand so they sort of get the colms
up on what the wicket's doing and what's. Effective and then,
YEAH i guess the batters get together when they are
out there and the openers sort of seend messages back
around what they think could could be shots to score.

(01:01:27):
Off but that's obviously a little bit more. Individual and then,
yeah generally IF i come on Or mitch comes, on
we're talking to each other about what balls seem to
be having an effect on the, Surface and, yeah trying
to just get that communication around the group as quickly as.

Speaker 4 (01:01:45):
Possible do you.

Speaker 2 (01:01:46):
Kind of have a general idea at the start of a,
game at the start of a bowling, innings how many
of the ten overs you'll typically bowl or does it
really depend on what plays out during the.

Speaker 17 (01:01:58):
Innings, no it certainly depends on how it plays out
during the. INNINGS i think as an all round are
you're sort of hoping to get a few others and
if you.

Speaker 4 (01:02:07):
Go, well you might get.

Speaker 17 (01:02:08):
Ten BUT i guess that's the beauty of our side
at the. Moment we've got a number of bowling, options, which,
yeah it means that you don't get a crack all
the time every, time but, yeah when you're called, upon
generally things are in your favor a little bit as
a bowler or all their oppositions doing really well in
your a last.

Speaker 2 (01:02:27):
Resort, well that hasn't been the case much with The
New zealand one day. Side it's been a very successful.
Outfit you talked about reacting to match situations as one
of the reasons for. That what, Else, michael what are
the other really well functioning parts of This New zealand fifty.

Speaker 17 (01:02:43):
Overside, YEAH i THINK i sort of touched on it
a little. BIT i think we've got a number of
players that offer a little bit with both bat and.

Speaker 4 (01:02:51):
Ball even you.

Speaker 17 (01:02:53):
Look at Rich and who hasn't been called upon in
this series with the, ball but he's he's waiting in
the wings there for his opportunity to have a. Crack
and then, yeah we've Got nathan And zach have come
in and done a great with the ball but haven't
haven't really been called upon with the bat too much
in this, series but, yeah they're certainly waiting in the

(01:03:13):
wings ready.

Speaker 4 (01:03:14):
To go with the.

Speaker 17 (01:03:14):
Bat SO i think it just gives us a number
of options to be able, to AS i, say just
play what's in front of us and and sort of
put our best foot forward with the conditions in.

Speaker 2 (01:03:26):
Mind and the next man up mentality was no better
demonstrated than the last game When Blair, tickner WHO i
don't things played For New zeala for well over two,
years might be close to two and a half, years
comes in With Matt Henry adam picks up four for thirty.
Four that you, know must have been a really, cool
cool thing to Watch Blair tickner go about his work
the other night In.

Speaker 17 (01:03:45):
Hamilton, absolutely obviously there's there's two sides to. That you're
obviously gutted For Matt henry who's picked up a little
injury there and missing out on. Cricket you never want
to see, that but, yeah when it allows someone to
come in and show they've still got what it takes and,
yeah get another crack at it is. Outstanding and you're

(01:04:08):
really happy For blair the way that he just came
in and took everything in his stride and did it
his way and had a lot of success doing. That so,
yeah it's great to see AND i think it sort
of shows that domestic cricket is very strong at the
moment and you see a lot of guys coming in
and performing straight, away which is.

Speaker 2 (01:04:26):
Great, well that leads into the first ever call up
For Christian clark and as you, Say Matt, henry we
wish him a speedy recovery from that calf. Strain But
Christian clark called into the Black caps for the first.
TIME i think he's joined you in the last few
days at training In. Wellington how do you go about
making sure a new guy like that feels integrated reasonably

(01:04:47):
quickly into the Black. Caps, yeah it's a pretty quick.

Speaker 17 (01:04:49):
One he arrived yesterday and was around training but had
just come off A Ford trophy, game so he didn't
didn't have to do a hell of a. Lot he
did it all on the field the day before he
got one hundred and a three.

Speaker 4 (01:05:00):
Place so.

Speaker 17 (01:05:02):
He's in good form AND i think that's obviously one
thing that. Helps he's been playing one day cricket, now
he's had two games under his belt FOR nd so
he's in the rhythm of one day cricket and, yeah
you just wish him well and sort of, yeah try
and try and make him feel as welcome as he
can in the. GROUP i think it's an exciting opportunity

(01:05:25):
for him to be in and around the group for
the first time and certainly well.

Speaker 2 (01:05:29):
Deserved, obviously your focus is pretty much game to, Game,
Michael but do you have a sort of a short
term look at THE t Twenty World cup in the
first few months of next. Year is that on your?

Speaker 17 (01:05:41):
Radar, YEAH i think you're silly not to have an
eye on what's coming up in the. Future but, yeah
as you, say it's then what can you actually do
in the moment now to sort of impact. That and,
yeah we're really looking forward to this game. Tonight it's
obviously one day cricket but a lot of the skills

(01:06:03):
are transferable between the all three. Formats you're effectively just
wanting to go out and play the best game cricket
you can whatever format you.

Speaker 4 (01:06:12):
PLAY i don't.

Speaker 2 (01:06:13):
Think you've ever played A One Day international In? Wellington
is that? RIGHT i can't remember you playing one either
at The basin well and lots of games For, wellington
BUT i don't think you've. Played you PLAYED t twenty
there Against pakistan last, summer BUT i don't think you've.
Played have you not played a fifty Over international And?

Speaker 17 (01:06:27):
WELLINGTON i ran the drinks last year as Against verlanka
last year at The, Basin but, Yeah i'm looking forward
to getting out there in front of a local. Crowd
hopefully it's a big. One we're obviously expecting a big
one being at the, stadium but, yeah hopefully being A,
saturday we'll get a decent crowd theren't. It, yeah it's

(01:06:50):
a lovely day for, it So i'm Sure i'm sure
The wellington faith will get out in.

Speaker 2 (01:06:53):
Numbers i'm sure they. WILL i just want to circle
back To Daryl mitchell as, well who has been undismissable
in the series seventy, eight not out in the first
game fifty, two not out the other. Night what is
it about him that allows him to just continue to
be so, consistent regardless of the of the format and
regardless of the. Situation he just seems to have this
ability to continue to deliver in cricket matches For New.

Speaker 17 (01:07:14):
Zealand, yeah he's he's got A, YEAH i guess it's
a it's a great hunger for runs and and to
just to just do it over time as. Outstanding he's
he's also a great person to bat, with keeps you,
engaged but also gives you little little targets along the
way to keep keep you. Going and, yeah he's he's

(01:07:37):
certainly a great man to have on your. Side he's
he loves a bit of a, fight SO i think
the situations have really helped him get get into the. Battle,
obviously losing a couple of wickets early and he comes
in and the game's on the line and that's, yeah
that seems to be what what he thrives on the.
Most so it's it's fantastic to see him doing so,
well but it's certainly no surprise because he's done it

(01:07:59):
for a number of years for us.

Speaker 2 (01:08:00):
Now looking forward to gaining three between the Black caps
And england a bit later on today at Sky stadium
as you look for a Three neal clean. Sweep really
appreciate you taking the time for a, Chat.

Speaker 17 (01:08:08):
Michael no, Problem thanks for having Me pliny, yes.

Speaker 2 (01:08:11):
No thank you for joining, Us, Michael Michael brace while
they're from the Black caps. Camp so that game underway
in about twenty four minutes from, NOW i can tell
you while we've been chatting To Michael, brace while the
toss has been made And Mitchell saton has won the,
toss or to be, Precise Harry brooke has called wrong,
again So Mitchell satner happy to bowl first. Again that
has worked for them in the first two matches with

(01:08:32):
wins by four wickets and five. Wickets So england going
again to bat first at Sky stadium are injury news
Came williamson with a groin, niggle so he won't. Play
Devon conway comes into the. Side so that's the one
change For New Zealand's williamson Out conway In. ON i
was gonna say his home, track his home tracks really

(01:08:52):
the basement, reserve isn't, it but his. Hometown So Devin
conway comes into the team as news to look for
a clean sweep of this. Series just looking ahead as
far as what is to come for the Black caps
following the completion of this, game they're straight back into
it against The West indies On. Wednesday we've got a
five MATCH t twenty series starting On wednesday At Eden

(01:09:15):
park In auckland at seven. Fifteen then it's To nelson
For game two And game Three thursday and the Following.
Sunday that's the. Ninth the fourth one was also In,
Nelson so there's three In nelson and the fifth one In.
Dunedin So Eden park three And nelson and one In,
duneda and those are THE t Twenty, internationals and then

(01:09:37):
there are Three one dayers against The West indies On november, sixteen,
nineteen and twenty, two and then into The test. Matches
so we're cramming a lot of cricket against The West
indies into the next little. While FIVE t, twenties Three
one Day internationals and then Three test, matches the first
of which is At hagleoval and Christ church starting On.

(01:09:58):
December the second then In Wellington december tenth through. Fourteen
AND i say that tentatively because we don't know how
long these test matches are going to. Last and the
third one is just Before christmas eighteen through twenty Two
december At Bay. Oval tell, us hime, Mate Hi.

Speaker 18 (01:10:15):
Barney, look, Yeah i'm really looking forward to this afternoon and,
yeah a one day. Game you can already settled. In
And i'm very impressed With Michael. Bracewell and it struck
me lad few other interviews that these top sportsmen they
usually very grounded and very well, spoken very clear, headed

(01:10:39):
not non. Emotional where you talk About Cain, williamson you're
talking about top, golfers they're usually very grounded to have
a very realistic approach to where they, are where they.
Sit have you found at yourself.

Speaker 2 (01:10:53):
Great, Observation, dallas great Observation AND i one hundred percent. Agree,
yeah they reach the top of their. SPORT i think
because they are well rounded human beings and that comes
across in the way that they conduct themselves in media.
Situations you're, right you, know you're very rarely you, know
once you get to the very top level interview somebody

(01:11:15):
who is you, know all over the, place sometimes there
are you, know there's always the. Outlier but but, yeah
for the most, part, mate you bang. On they're they're good,
quality grounded human beings who make it to the.

Speaker 18 (01:11:25):
Top, yeah the lydia codes of this. World, yep That's
scotty that that number one golfer man's so he's just about,
asleep you, know he's just soa that's right.

Speaker 2 (01:11:39):
Now and that's, it isn't. It You, like you think
of these high precious, situations and golf's a bit, different isn't,
it because they say you do have to actually be
a little bit relaxed and not too tense to play.
Well but but you think about high precious situations LIKE
t twenty cricket and and the you, know those split
second decisions that have to be made in the heat
of the. Moments motor racing the, SAME i, Think, dallas you,
KNOW i, mean goodness, me the margins for era are

(01:12:02):
so small and the consequence is so. Big how could
you not be really tense and really you, know kind
of amped up and THEN i hard enough getting home
getting home and traffic at five, o'clock let alone driving
Around batheist or something. Similar but, no it's a great
observation you make made and, look it's something that CERTAINLY

(01:12:22):
i have found over my time of chatting to to
being lucky enough to chat to some of the top
sports people going. Around Good Man dallis enjoy the cricket this.
Afternoon New zealand have won the. Toss the'll bowl first
when the game gets underway at two. O'clock we'll keep
you updated nineteen to two when we come back across The.
Tasman Adam peacock From australia in his regular. Slot you
be THE.

Speaker 1 (01:12:42):
Tmo have yours Say on eight hundred and eighty ten
Eighty Weekend sport With Jason pin AND. Gj, Guvnerholmes New
zealand's most trusted home, Builder News TALKS mb.

Speaker 2 (01:12:52):
One forty Four saturday afternoon On News TALK. Zb this
Is Weekend. Sport let's get you across The. Tasman Our
australian Correspondent Adam peacock standing by as, ALWAYS a big
week of racing ahead And i'm GOING i want to
start with. Rugby it's been a big year for The
wallabies already eleven tests so far and twenty twenty five
four more to, go starting With england tomorrow morning at twicken.

(01:13:15):
Them how confident are you about A wallaby's winning this.

Speaker 14 (01:13:18):
One, yeah well this is where it started pinety two
months ago that the kind of rejuvenation of this side
by winning A test that really on paper they weren't
expected to in the last minute might, add and there's
NOTHING i beat The poms on their own turf and
especially ripping victory away from them as well in the
last last few. Seconds so, yeah this is what started

(01:13:40):
to give a bit more hope In australian. Rugby now
counteracting that for this is the fact that The, English
i'm about to, believe have done a deal with all their,
clubs so it's outside the designated international window this. Game
dave released all their, players whereas we can't get access
to all our players because a few of them, are
Like Will, skelton for, instance playing In. France so going

(01:14:01):
in on the back FOOT i would think on that
and let's face, it When Will skelton, plays so we
tend at the moment to become a different. Side so,
yeah talking it, down but there's still hope that we
can get one over The.

Speaker 2 (01:14:15):
English looking forward to seeing how that plays out. Tomorrow
and now The australian women's cricket team beaten at The
Cricket World cup knock that in the simmis By. India
this was some. Game india chased down three hundred and
thirty nine to win this one with nine balls to
spare to win by five. WICKETS i guess you kind
of just have to take your head off To, india don't.

Speaker 14 (01:14:34):
You, Absolutely, yeah there's no other way of looking at. It,
look The australians had their chances and there were minimal.
Chances it was a game where it was played on
a deck which was always going to produce a lot of,
runs which means it puts extra pressure on when a
chance is created to really take. It and there was
a couple in. There Alesa, healy our good friend BECAUSE

(01:14:57):
i do a podcast with. Her i'm not going to bag,
it but she grasps one that she really on another
day she absolutely takes with her eyes. Shut so it
was just one of those, occasions unfortunately For, australia where
a few things went wrong And india took every opportunity
and it. Happened in twenty, Seventeen india Beat australia at
A World cup semi. Finals so it's not a complete,
outlier but the way That australia were going about. It

(01:15:20):
they dominated the group. Stage, basically they Smashed South africa
last game when in very confident And india just came
up with the performance for the ages to do them
and all of a sudden it becomes a bad. Tournament
it's a really harsh, one but that's the way it,
goes and that's what they've had to cough.

Speaker 2 (01:15:38):
Unfortunately is she about to hang up the cricketing white
or the Cricketing? Colors alyssa heally DID i?

Speaker 14 (01:15:45):
See, yeah she's towards the end AND i won't be
against that because then we'll have full access for her
appearances On Willow. Talk, yeah but, no she's one of
those one of those players pinety that has done so
much in the. Game it's on her watch when she
decides that the clicks to where it has to go

(01:16:09):
for the next age of her. Life it's up to.
Her and at the moment it looks like it's going
to be. Soon exactly when we're not, sure but there's
A t Twenty World. CUP i think next year that
she might she might call time after, that but it's
up to. Her she's such a legend and she proved
it again this tournament with a couple of huge knocks
at the start of the.

Speaker 2 (01:16:28):
TOURNAMENT a big rugby league story this week Surrounding Ryan
pappenhaus in The Melbourne Storm star but no. Longer he's
walked away from the final year of his. Contract what's
he going to? Do i've heard him linked WITH r three,
sixty BUT i saw an interesting message last night from
him On instagram saying he's just going to take a

(01:16:48):
bit of a. Break what are you?

Speaker 14 (01:16:49):
Hearing, Yeah and that's the first actual official line with.
Her that was the. Whisper like EVERYONE r through sixty
presumed that he was going to be one of the first,
ones but then whispers started to go, no he's actually
just going to chill out and wait and work out
what he wants to. Do, obviously he doesn't want to
rush INTO r three sixty because everyone around the world

(01:17:10):
who's even heard of it is, thinking, well, okay we'll
prove that you've got this, money prove that you're going
to run a, competition and for a player in rugby,
league especially with the threats that are, around like a
ten year band and all, that it's not something you
could jump. Into And Ryan papanhausen is as a GUY
i don't know him, personally but talking to a few other,
people the top of a guy that's not defined by

(01:17:32):
what he. Does he's not like you, know he'll happily
get to the end of his footy life and then
go off and do other. Things so, yeah it'll be
an interesting one if he takes a sabbatic or we've
seen it in other sports that he just, decides, Now
i'll just go and do something else for a. BIT i,
mean he could be the one to go up and

(01:17:54):
play a bit Of japanese, rugby for, instance for a
sabbatical and then decide after that to come back to
rugby league or. Whatever SO i don't think there's anything
sinis he's trying to manufacture and move ahead of time
to another rugby lay. Club the thought is, that, yeah
he's just going to assess and work out what's.

Speaker 9 (01:18:10):
Best all.

Speaker 2 (01:18:11):
Right we'll keep eyes on that big week of racing,
ahead the biggest week of racing In australia with The
Melbourne Cup cannibal kicking off today At flemington With Derby
Day Derby day, today is?

Speaker 14 (01:18:22):
It, Yeah, Yeah Derby, Day Derby day In melbourne And
Golden Eagle day At. Randwick so this is another one
Where New South wales racing authorities have gone No, victoria
you shouldn't have full kind of sway over the. Calendar
we're going to create a big day ourselves to counteract

(01:18:43):
what you're doing down. There so three group ones down At,
flemington great, races but up here we've got a ten
million dollar race To Golden, eagle an interesting tiny that
they've actually marketed a bit differently this. Year they're calling.

Speaker 8 (01:18:56):
It Golden Mingle.

Speaker 14 (01:18:57):
Day do you want to explain quickly what that? Means?
Please so if you're, single you go to the races
and at the gate you get giving a green, batch
which basically says to the opposite sex or whoever it might,
be you, know we're an open society and now that

(01:19:19):
you can come and talk to me and let's try
and hook.

Speaker 8 (01:19:20):
Up so.

Speaker 14 (01:19:23):
They come up with so The Golden mingle.

Speaker 2 (01:19:25):
Is the thing, amazing The Golden Tinder day by the
sounds of. It At, randwick good right, day that's, right that's, right, yes,
well and a good day's racing as. Well and presumably
you'll be At flemington On tuesday For Melbourne cup.

Speaker 14 (01:19:40):
Yeah, Yeah i'm looking forward to it actually because even
though it doesn't have The cup this year doesn't have
this wow, horse it's so hard to line. Up you've
got form converging from just about every racing jurisdiction that's
worth its worth its spoon of sugar around the. World so,
yeah it's a it's a really intriguing Racis yeah. It

(01:20:01):
she'll be a great.

Speaker 2 (01:20:02):
Day flamington has always fantastic. Stuff all, right may enjoy
your weekend and Your i'm In melbourne and will catch

Four wallaby's seventeen At twickenham ten years ago, today The
All blacks becoming the first side to win back to
Back World cups and winning the will and Where alis
trophy on foreign soil for the first. Time Karen reid
was at number eight for The All blacks that night
and joins. Us, Now, karen does it feel like like

(01:29:15):
ten years? Ago or is it one of those that
feels much longer ago than, that or is it one
of those that feels like? Yesterday?

Speaker 8 (01:29:23):
YEAH i don't. Know it's crazy actually TIMES i guess
you get older and you kind of it kind of
just still doesn't it in some? Ways but certainly remember
the night very finally like it was. Yesterday but to be,
Honest i've never watched it, again you, know so you've
just got those memories of what it, was you. Know but,
yeah very very awesome time for.

Speaker 2 (01:29:42):
Us can you remember feeling pretty confident going into the?

Speaker 9 (01:29:46):
Final?

Speaker 8 (01:29:47):
Oh, yeah most. DEFINITELY i think play In australia like
as a, team we knew really. Well obviously we've played
play them a, lot two or three times a year
in that, period sometimes four times a, year and so you,
know we knew this, drinks knew kind of where their
holes were and we could could exploit, them so we had.
To obviously you look back now and you, go, man
that side was pretty pretty. Fantastic so, yes, confident but

(01:30:11):
there's no givens in A World cup and especially finals,
games so you got to earn. It you've got to
put all the preparation that's required to get out there
and do the.

Speaker 14 (01:30:20):
Job.

Speaker 2 (01:30:20):
WELL i remember the semi final was really, tight wasn't
it twenty eighteen Against South? Africa it was on the score,
Board but do you remember much about the Semi did
that feel like a like a good lead into The
Rugby World Cup final for the?

Speaker 8 (01:30:33):
Team? YEAH i think we'd realize right having you, know
bunch of us have played a couple Of World, cups
and for some of us who had won twenty, eleven you,
know like every game is different in A World. Cup
you know a semi is going to be different to
a final and you can't expect the same kind of. Game,
yes southcare has do good. Side it was a bit,
drizzley so it leans itself to being a bit tight

(01:30:53):
to that. Game to be, honest we felt really comfortable
in that game against Sou. AFRICA i. Think, yes the
scoreboard was tight and that was probably down a discipline and.
Things but in terms of on the, field like we,
say very COMFORTABLE i, think and showed at the end
how it could just kind of hold them out without,
defense you, know pretty. Easily but, yeah you know the

(01:31:14):
factor is so it can, go it can change pretty.
Quickly but, yeah we certainly knew going into a final
half of that, game you, know having a close one
that was you, know you're, expecting you, Know australia to
play the best of a game and you've just got
to prepare for that.

Speaker 2 (01:31:28):
Really so the final it all started very well and at,
halftime what's sixteen three? Ahead then to try To martin
and who early in the second you're twenty one to three.
Ahead you must have felt, okay and Then Ben smith
got sinbin from?

Speaker 8 (01:31:41):
Memory do you remember the, Heat, yeah, YEAH i, do
like it did. Change it actually did change the, game you,
know like cards now have become part of the you,
know part of the game and he's just about a
card every every every time you play. Now but you,
know back then it made a big difference In. Australia
AS i, said we're damn good attack inside and the

(01:32:01):
fullback's pretty crucial to us in terms of organizing and
especially at backfields and getting your wingers to be on
kind of strings and work. Together so look it, was you,
know it took a while and they and they just
attacked well in that ten MINUTES i think that's called
the two tries got it back to within these three
points or so or four, points and we were certainly went.
Panicking there was pretty clear. IDEAS i think you know

(01:32:25):
that we're talking about behind our posts at that, stage.

Speaker 2 (01:32:28):
And ten minutes to go And Dan carter drops a
goal from about forty made us out to. You i've
watched that footage so many times of him and just
he's willing it, over willing it. Over how big a
moment was that dropping with ten minutes to? Go, YEAH i.

Speaker 8 (01:32:41):
Guess it probably just you, know was it put it
out the little. Buffer you, know you can never take
anything for granted in a, final a finals, game so
look at you, know we were still felt good and then,
control you, know but he just knew when to push
the trigger right for, that and it wasn't necessarily in

(01:33:01):
the in the. Playbook he's just got an instinct there
AND i suddenly got us the right result with.

Speaker 2 (01:33:08):
That, one And body runs, away kicks it ahead and
scores the, try which really sealed it for you Before
dan kicks the conversion with his right foot to make
it thirty four to. Seventeen where were you As body
was sprinting away to score that last. Try i'm trying to.

Speaker 8 (01:33:25):
THINK i don't know WHERE i, was BUT i was probably,
somewhere probably thought he's got. THIS i was pretty. NAKED
i came down in the line out two minutes into
the game and basically wrecked my ankle and just struggled
myself through the, game to be, Honest and it was
in a moonboot for eight. Weeks BUT i was probably
the injection and things were still in the way. Off

(01:33:47):
probably by the end of that, game it was, like,
no you, Go, body And i'll wait here and you,
know finish off the game that.

Speaker 2 (01:33:54):
Way i'd forgotten. That so you really badly hurt your
ankle after only a couple of minutes and had what
a quarter zone or.

Speaker 8 (01:34:00):
Something, yeah, yep so it was quite. Bad. Yep so
kind of just. ADRENALINE i guess. Lucky it wasn't too
functionally that. Dad it was more of a had broken a,
bone BUT i rolled, it so it was all the
outside ligaments and. Things so we have a strap and
it kind of got me to half. Time it's certainly

(01:34:21):
in a ton of, pain but then, yeah bit of
local and half time to get me through the second.
Half so you, know there's games that you can do.
That you know games you can't do, that and then
we'll finally certainly can do. That and the, minds as we,
know there's spent some pretty epic tales Of All black's doing,
that and you can you can go and do, that you,

(01:34:42):
know if your mind's willing to take you those.

Speaker 2 (01:34:45):
Places do you Remember karen being being or feeling under
less pressure in twenty fifteen because you'd one and twenty.

Speaker 8 (01:34:53):
Eleven, NAH i don't think. SO i think we were
a team that wasn't really externally motivated at that, time you,
know like we felt like we were a world champion
from eleven to live like world champions in that cycle
and certainly going to fifteen and the pressure was we
put all this pressure on ourselves in some ways. Internally

(01:35:16):
and the funny thing is, right but we're a great
side had lost maybe three games in that four or five.
Years four. Years, yeah as soon as we didn't play
as well in the first couple of games in the pool,
games the media jumped on us pretty, quickly you. Know
so that's how fickle the media can. Be so you
can't really look at that as motivational. Pressure you've got

(01:35:37):
to go to look at. Yourselves and you, know we
were experienced and had some good guys who could enable
us to do. That and you, know for, us it
was a different feeling to a live and completely been In.
England was another chance to kind of experience The World
cup and the light from an away kind of fans
perspective that we could walk around In england sometimes and

(01:35:59):
people wouldn't know who you, were you. Know so, yeah
it was it was quite cool having that experience and
as a team you're, away you're completely to give us
for that eight weeks or.

Speaker 2 (01:36:10):
So did you know That richie And dan were going
to call it a day after?

Speaker 8 (01:36:14):
That, yeah, yeah we, Did like they didn't tell us right,
like so you, know but everyone. Knew so there's obviously
all those, guys Right richie Dad. Man how many cats
did we lose after that? Game you, Know CONRAD. kV so,
look we. Knew no one had come out and said
you know, that you, know on their way, out but

(01:36:37):
that was that was the. Feeling so that adds a
little bit extra type of guys they. Are it's not about,
them but certainly as a, team we you, know knew
the legacy and we wanted to make sure that they
went out on a.

Speaker 2 (01:36:50):
High were we still able to celebrate even with a sore?

Speaker 8 (01:36:52):
Ankle, YEAH i, was certainly. Was it did mean That
i'm normally partial for we little bit, boogie BUT i
just had to sit down a little bit. More. Yeah,
yeah a different kind of painkiller that night than the,
Tablets but, YEAH i was, well And trulli And scott's
in the team room and a few boys went out

(01:37:14):
and carried on the party into. Town BUT i wasn't
quite up to that that. NIGHT i good see.

Speaker 2 (01:37:20):
Days, yeah still a great memory ten years. On thanks
for joining us for a wander down Memory, Lane karen
really appreciate.

Speaker 8 (01:37:25):
It no, catch no catch you so And.

Speaker 2 (01:37:27):
Karen. Thanks, Indeed karen read their number eight that day
as The All blacks won The World cup ten years. Ago,
today if you were there but keen to hear you
recollections of. IT i think it's probably the Calmest i've
ever been watching The All blacks play in a serious
match at A Rugby World. Cup certainly a lot calmer
than four years previous when we had to endure the

(01:37:49):
second half of that game Against france At Eden park
at eight to seven. Ahead there was a lot more.
RELAXED i remember this the semi final being a lot more,
stressful With South africa getting close twenty points to, eighteen
The All blacks eventually, winning even When australia got back
to within striking this And Ben smith was in the.
BIN i don't remember being overly. CONCERNED i always thought

(01:38:12):
that we'd find a. Way and then you remember the
team that played in that game.

Speaker 9 (01:38:17):
For The All.

Speaker 2 (01:38:17):
Blacks listen to. This Joe, Moody Dane coles And Owen
franks in the front, Row Broder retallic And Sam whitelocke the,
Locks Jerome, Kainor richie McCaw And Karen reid the loose.
Forwards Aaron smith And Dan carter and the haves Mar
nanow And Conrad smith and the Centers Julian savia near
him on A scudder And Ben. Smith what a? Team

(01:38:41):
and Remember conrad came off at. Halftime i'd forgotten that
UNTIL i just had a quick look at that. Now
Steve hanson Took Conrad smith off at halftime and what
turned out to be his final test and Brought Sonny
Bill williams. On New zealand were a head at the
break twenty one points to. Three maybe he just thought

(01:39:04):
it was so and. UP i don't. KNOW i Remember
Conrad smith a little bit. Displeased you would, be wouldn't
you taken off at halftime in A Rugby World cup?

Speaker 18 (01:39:10):
Final?

Speaker 2 (01:39:10):
Anyway seem we work out all? Right are the other Reserves,
Kevinmolamu Ben, Franks Charlie, Farmer Win Are, Victor, Vito Sam, Cain,
tabota Kerb, Barlow Bowden. Barrett of course he scored that
final try And Sonny Bill williams ten years. Ago All
blacks thirty Four australia. Seventeen, Yes i'm reading that list
of names and Hearing Karen reed, say you know the
number of caps we lost because we're retired after. That Conrad, Smith, marnon,

(01:39:34):
Who Dan, Carter richie, Mccawr. Kevimalamu they all, retired didn't
they after twenty? Fifteen man a lot of. Experience way
to go out on a high updating live sport at
Sky stadium in The. Capital it is the second rather
the Third one Day. INTERNATIONAL i Think england have given,

(01:39:54):
up haven't? They they've given. UP i don't reckon they'll
even turn the lights. On seventeen for three in the
fifth Over England Jamie smith caught By Tom them off
the bowling of Zach folks for. Five joe root lbw
to the bowling Of Zach folks for. Two Ben duck
at the last out caught by rich And ravendra off

(01:40:17):
the bowling Of Jacob duffy for. Eight Howry brooks out
there unbeaten on. Two Jacob bethel's going to head out
and join. Him we're midway through the fifth over of
the game And england are seventeen for, three Zach folks
two for eight off two. Overs Jacob duffy won for
nine bowling his third, over so certainly not going the

(01:40:38):
way That england had hoped and, well they've really proven
to be a rather meek, opponent haven't? They in These
one Day internationals THE t, twenties what were? They they won
one of, those didn't? They and two of them washed?
Out but in these one days SO i was like
that they don't really know how to play fifty over.
Cricket they you, know they go for it IN t

(01:41:02):
twenty stuff And test matches they seemed about the same.
Way the old bars a, thing but at fifty over,
CRICKET i don't. Know it just doesn't seem to be
working for, them does. It seventeen for three would suggest
that maybe they try a different. APPROACH i don't. Know
in The Baseball World, series top of the, fifth The
dodgers lead The Blue jays three runs to. One The

(01:41:22):
dodgers need to win this game to go into a
Deciding game seven, tomorrow two twenty. Five AS i, say

Speaker 6 (01:46:19):
Think there's been obviously some some big big news With
Carter gordon coming back into back into rugby signing with
The reds and there's a bit of that sort of
caused a little bit of a you, Know merry go
round in the in the number. Ten So teane ed
med going down to The brumbies is another big. Signing

handle on how we're tracking down.

Speaker 6 (01:47:27):
Here, yeah, Absolutely and you know you couple that with
watching so many super super players playing IN Mpc final
last weekend as well to sort of see the whole
pyramid in. Actions you, KNOW i love. That and you
know when we look at some of the guys Like

(01:47:47):
Warner dean's playing For japan last, week who's coming down
of The canes For Super rugby next, year is. Exciting
and then Seeing leicester get named in the team to
play up In chicago Versus, Island it's going to be
great seeing those. Guys those guys mix it on the international,
stage as well as all of the big stars for

(01:48:08):
The wallabies and The All blacks that play week, in
week out In Super But i'm really interested to see
how we. Go it feels like it's been a long
international season, already probably particularly because we had the lines
over In australia and The wallabies have played a number
Of test. Matches but, Yeah i'm sure we'll see the
power of The pacific come to life over the next

(01:48:29):
couple of weeks and and and hopefully hopefully take home
some some you, know some some.

Speaker 2 (01:48:36):
Wins and laws are slightly different at international, level you,
know not markedly, different but there are the odd little
little tweaks here and. There international rugby as compared To Super,
rugby you still keep an eye on on law interpretations
AND i, guess you, know think about what might be
useful down here as you continue to make the game
attractive for players and.

Speaker 4 (01:48:56):
Fans.

Speaker 6 (01:48:57):
Yeah, absolutely you, know we've our shape of. Game working
group's been been working throughout the off season to to
finalize our plan For Super rugby in twenty twenty six
and certainly watching the test matches and WATCHING. Npc you,
know we're certainly watching very closely and working how we

(01:49:21):
want to take. It you, KNOW i think it's reconfirmed
a few things for us about what we want to
see In super and you, KNOW i guess our commitment
to the fans is we're going to continue to Push
super to be you, know the, fastest most exciting rugby
you watch you can, watch and we'll be working with

(01:49:42):
our match officials and on the laws as well to
make sure that that comes to life in twenty. Six
to continue the good work THAT i think we all
saw and that we sort of got great feedback on
from last. Season so, yeah lots of work being done
in that side of, things and lots of planning with
our match official teams and into our coaching teams to

(01:50:06):
make sure everyone's set up to success Come february To,
thirdey which which is going to come around pretty.

Speaker 2 (01:50:12):

team full time.

Speaker 2 (01:54:37):
Here At Joe Media.

Speaker 5 (01:54:38):
Stadium AUCKLAND fc Won Western sydney wanderer is.

Speaker 2 (01:54:42):
Nil let's bring An auckland F c attack Of Locky.
Brook bit of a quirk of the, Draw locky in
that in consecutive weeks you'll play your two FORMER A league,
Sides Western sydney last, Weekend Adelaide united this. Afternoon how
much you're looking forward to coming up against the team
that your debuted for what seven years? Ago?

Speaker 16 (01:54:59):
Yeah funny draw that, obviously when the drawer came, OUT
i had a look at, that and, YEAH i think
probably no better way to start off the, season, Obviously but, yeah,
No i'm.

Speaker 2 (01:55:11):
Excited.

Speaker 14 (01:55:11):
OBVIOUSLY i know a.

Speaker 16 (01:55:12):
Few of the boys as, well so you've always got
that added bit of motivation to do them.

Speaker 4 (01:55:17):
Over but.

Speaker 16 (01:55:18):
Yeah, no, Overall i'm.

Speaker 2 (01:55:19):
Just excited you davoote for them when you were sixteen
in early twenty, Eighteen how really did you feel for
a league football at that?

Speaker 16 (01:55:27):
Age to be, honest at the, time it was quite
a shock because the GAME i wasn't even meant to
start at, all and then someone got injured in the
warm up AND i sort of got thrown. In BUT
i think that sort of worked out all. RIGHT i
think sometimes IF i KNEW i was starting all, week
you can let the nerves get to. You BUT i
didn't really have any time to let the nerves kick,

(01:55:48):
in SO i just obviously went out there and did my.
Best but, yeah that was an awesome. Experience, Obviously i'm
An adelade boy And i've touched on being An adelade fan,
before so, yeah for, me it was.

Speaker 2 (01:55:58):
Massive and how do you remember your time overall with
the Read you were there for two or three. YEARS
i think you had time in THE uk during that,
time didn't.

Speaker 4 (01:56:07):
You, yeah, yeah, NO i loved. IT i loved.

Speaker 16 (01:56:09):
It even in the off season WHILE i was in THE,
MLS i trained With adelaide and they helped me to
stay stay fitting sharp in the off. Season so, Yeah
i've got a really good relationship with the people at the,
club and, yeah, OVERALL i just, obviously LIKE i, SAID
i am a fan of the. Club not that it's
going to make me play any less, hard but, yeah

(01:56:31):
Now i'm obviously very thankful for the club and you
know how they kicked off my career and. Stuff so,
yeah very good.

Speaker 2 (01:56:37):
Relationship how easy an environment Has AUCKLAND fc been for
you to fit? Into, yeah, honestly very.

Speaker 16 (01:56:45):
Easy LIKE i said this in an interview the other
day that you, know coming here and, stuff it doesn't
feel like it's not. Home obviously when you've been living
away and, stuff anywhere close to this side of the
world does feel like.

Speaker 9 (01:56:57):
Home and just with.

Speaker 16 (01:56:59):
The boys in, general we're a really good bunch as,
well AND i think that goes a long, way you,
know when you've got that camaraderie and brother hood within
the team and even within the staff as. Well you,
know we're all quite close and, stuff AND i think you,
know in a season long season that is it's it
goes a long.

Speaker 2 (01:57:16):
Way it'd be interesting because you came into a team
that you know that last, year as we all, know
they were they were, new they all sort of went
through the same things together of being this you, know
this very successful first season franchise only to fall short
at the. End there aren't really many additions to the
side yourself and a couple of. Others there was no

(01:57:36):
there was no. Clunkiness when you first. Arrived they kind
of welcomed you in as one of their one of their.

Speaker 4 (01:57:41):
Own, yeah they. Did they.

Speaker 16 (01:57:43):
Did no obviously that there is that year that they
had AND i think a lot of history that, they'll you,
know they'll remember. Forever but there's still the team, still you,
know very, fresh and there's still things that they didn't
do last year that you know that HOPEFULLY i can
contribute for them doing this. Year so, YEAH i think
that the mission hasn't, changed AND i think the mission

(01:58:03):
is quite clear that we want to do one better
than last, year and HOPEFULLY i CAN i can help
out in Doing.

Speaker 2 (01:58:09):
So what is the role that head Coach Steve coricker
has specifically asked you to.

Speaker 9 (01:58:13):
PLAY i think it's.

Speaker 16 (01:58:16):
YEAH i, mean if you watch the, games IT'S i
think it's quite. CLEAR i do a drift inside a
lot and maybe people Think i'm getting, lost but that's
that's all part of. It, yeah IT'S i wouldn't say
it's a free, role but he obviously does give me
a bit of freedom to come inside and link up
play and you, know try get on the ball as
much as, possible but, obviously you, know try to stay

(01:58:38):
within the structures and off the. Ball, yeah that's that's
a job that we all have to, do is work
hard and you, know plenty of running and plenty of.
Tackling so, Yeah i'd say that's mostly my role That
steve's given.

Speaker 2 (01:58:51):
Me and how does it link with the likes Of Sam,
cosgrove who's very much your traditional number, nine gives you
My may who who kind of drops off the, line
he's more of a. TEN i, guess how does your
connection with those two players specifically.

Speaker 16 (01:59:05):
Work, YEAH i think obviously it Was jamo's first sort
of game back last, week And i've obviously played with
him a bit in the, Preseason but even within, training
we do like to link up a, lot AND i
think we have a lot of the same ideas and
read each other, well and that's coming out more and
more in training and you could sort of see it
towards the end of the game that we started to

(01:59:26):
link up a lot more as, Well SO i, think you,
know in the deeper parts of the pitch to progress us,
forward that's going to, be you, know really important and
obviously a part of my game THAT i like to do.
Anyway and then obviously once we're in the final, third
is just trying to find The Eiffel, tower which Is
sam in the, middle and hopefully give him some assists
because he's a great finisher and, yeah when he gets

(01:59:49):
those chances, here you, know he's quite. Clinical so obviously
that's a big part of the game as well as
trying to feed him as much as.

Speaker 2 (01:59:55):
POSSIBLE i guess you can probably relate, to you, know
a new attacker coming into a new. Team maybe not
so much, you But i've got Like Sam. Cosgrave you,
know a lot of people thought he's going to come
in and absolutely feast on set piece delivery and crosses
from white. Areas hasn't got his goal. Yet do you
think it's weighing on his mind at?

Speaker 17 (02:00:10):
ALL i don't think.

Speaker 16 (02:00:11):
SO i think it's been two games in pre, season
he was scoring every. Game you, know the season's workout
in different. WAYS i don't think he needs to feel,
pressure and.

Speaker 2 (02:00:21):
HONESTLY i don't think he.

Speaker 16 (02:00:22):
Does you, know he's still he's still been massive for
us in the way that he holds up the ball
and tries to link play and he's always a. Threat
so in the end of the, day we haven't, lost
we haven't, Conceded so, YEAH i, mean, Obviously i'm sure
he probably would love to get a, goal and even,
Myself but in the end of the, days as long
as the team's doing well and we're, PERFORMING i think

(02:00:43):
the rest of the stuff will come.

Speaker 2 (02:00:44):
Out one of the hallmarks of the team last year
was it's water tight, defense and that's again proven to
be so this. Year, hey you say you haven't conceded
in your first two. Matches is defence something lucky that
you have a role to play and even though you
are an a tacking, Player.

Speaker 16 (02:00:59):
Yeah big, time big, TIME i. THINK i, think, honestly
that's the Way steves. Is the game is probably his
most important thing that he that he works, on and
what we you don't really strive ourselves on BECAUSE i
think you know that not conceding goals is going to.
Win he's going to win the, championship is going to you,
know take us. Further so, yeah we work a lot

(02:01:21):
on pressing and whether that's working back or and all
that sort of. Stuff and you, know it's a part
of the game THAT i don't mind. DOING i actually
quite enjoy it sometimes putting in a tackle or or working,
hard and, YEAH i think that's something that As i've
grown as a, player has gotten a lot better as. Well, so,
yeah it just worked out well that it sort of

(02:01:42):
fits within how they want to.

Speaker 2 (02:01:43):
Play and back to the front. Third you alluded to
it before when we were talking About, sam but just
the one goal for the team in two? Games how
do you become more? Prolific is? It is it just
a matter of continuing to do the same things and
being a bit more clinical creating the chances and they'll
and the goals will. Come how do You how do
you feel about?

Speaker 7 (02:02:01):
That?

Speaker 4 (02:02:02):
YEAH i think.

Speaker 16 (02:02:03):
SO i, think you, know with, us we've definitely got
the players to do. It AND i, think you, know
set pieces for us is something that maybe that we
need to do a little bit, better and just with
the players that we have delivering the ball and obviously
the players that we have in the, BOX i think
that's you, know something THAT i would say that we
can definitely improve. On just over the last couple of.

(02:02:24):
Games but you, know it's it's it's only been two,
games AND i, think LIKE i said in the end
of the, day we haven't conceded with you.

Speaker 1 (02:02:32):
Know we haven't.

Speaker 16 (02:02:32):
Lost we've got to win in a, draw AND i, think,
yeah you, know the first couple of weeks of a
season are always a bit a bit.

Speaker 9 (02:02:41):
Different you.

Speaker 16 (02:02:41):
Know obviously still players finding their feet or getting confidence
to play and. Stuff SO i, think, YEAH i, know
goals are there to be, had so, Yeah i'm hoping
that obviously as the season goes along things start to
open up when and, yeah, hopefully, yeah get some.

Speaker 2 (02:02:58):
Goals AND i know you're only looking At, adelaide but
how much are you looking forward to your First New
Zealand derby next?

Speaker 16 (02:03:05):
Weekend, yeah And i've had my eye on that one
for a. WHILE i love A, derby so, Yeah i've
Got i've got some stuff to prove for, Sure but,
Yeah i'm looking forwards though.
