Kat Wattle with three point seven. You're in number one for new contributor to
Steve and Gina in the morning.Steve Londi Gena Melton joining us is royalty
now I mean real royalty with areal crown, not a bought one like
yours or my virtual one. Hey, we would like to welcome Miss Nebraska
Rachel Warren him RACHELA. Nice tomeet you. Tell me yous well,

(00:20):
thanks for having me, you bet, and congratulations on being named Miss Nebraska.
Thank you so. Tell us aboutthe pageant. How was that?
It was a whirlwind. It's beenjust over a month. It was June
ninth that I was crowned Miss Nebraska. This has been ten years in the
making for me. Such an honor. I can't believe it's already been a
month. But I am so excitedto serve Nebraska. I know every Miss

(00:41):
Nebraska has a platform. Tell usa little bit about you, your background,
of what your platform is, Yes, sir, so, my platform
is passion to purpose. It's allabout youth mentorship. I would not be
who you see today without the mentorshipthat I had. I faced a soccer
injury in college and I really didn'tknow if I was ever going to be
able to be an athlete, letalone the roller skater that I am.
But it was because of the mentorshipand the people that came around me that

(01:02):
said, hey, you have allthese great talents and strengths, we just
have to figure out how to usethem in a different way. And so
from there on that's where passionate purposewas born. So I go into classrooms
and encourage students that you have apurpose, You have gifts and strengths.
We just have to figure out howto use them and how to find them.
So I work with organizations like Mentor, Mentor Nebraska, the YMCA Teen
Reach Adventure Camp to work with studentsto encourage them that you have something really

(01:25):
special and how can we figure thatout? How can we do that?
So I love being able to gointo classrooms and share that and tell my
roller skating story. To do that, that's fantastic. I mean it's so
needed at that age too, andthey're formative and they have to feel that
they belong somewhere, and I feellike the time is now for that.
I really do. And speaking ofroller skating, so that was your talent
at Miss Nebraska, right, Andwill you do that when you go to

(01:46):
Missish sure will I will be oneof four women that has ever roller skated
across the Miss America stage. I'mso so excited. So what's coming to
bath to your reigin roller Derby? No, no, no, not Derby.
I used to be a competitive figureskater. So right now I think
in Nebraska the roller Skating Nationals ishappening. So actually was there last night
presenting awards. That was really specialto be back. That's what I used

(02:07):
to do. Tell us a littlebit about your growing up. Were you
from Nebraska. I actually moved hereabout three years ago, but I used
to come to Nebraska every summer forroller skating, so it was really like
a second home. So moving hereand coming back to somewhere that felt so
like home and now getting to representit is just incredible. So what lies
ahead? Tell us about the pageantthat's coming up. Yes, so it's

(02:28):
in January in Orlando, so sunnyFlorida in January. We don't have dates
yet, we will know soon, but fifty two women will compete for the
title of Miss America. I've gottento meet ten of them so far.
They're amazing. It's a great class, So it'll be very, very fun,
but we'll stay stay tuned to whereit will be streamed because we don't
know that yet either. Talking withRachel Warren, Miss Nebraska Now, one
of my favorite Seinfeld episodes is whenKramer says he's going to mentor someone who's

(02:53):
in the Miss America pageant. Butis there really a mentor in your life
when it comes to getting ready forthe pageant and what role do they play?
Absolutely, I have a wonderful villageof people that has been alongside me
for the last ten years, andthey play so many important roles, one
being just encouragement. There's days wherethis can be tough and you're going going
and you need someone to just say, hey, you're doing a great job.

(03:14):
There's also mentors in my life thatcome alongside and say, Rachel,
I think we need to adjust this. And one of my favorite pieces of
advice that I've learned is be afilter, not a sponge. There's going
to be lots of people that arethrowing information at you, but you learn
who your people are, you learnwho you village is, and they're just
there to support and encourage you andmake you your best version of yourself.
Now, Gina has always had asecret deem to be a pageant winner.

(03:36):
True, what's a misnomer? What'ssomething that people may not understand about being
not only a pageant contestant, buta pageant winner. Well two things here.
I think One, people think thatit's just a beauty pageant, that
there's not much to it. ButI will tell you this program really did
change my life. I have learnedso many skills, being able to talk
to you all, interview for anyjob that I want, be able to

(04:00):
to speak to any different individual, self confidence. It really does change who
you are and it helps you becomethe best version of yourself. But the
sisterhood, I think people think pageantsare catty, but these women, we
all want to be the best versionof ourselves, strive to be the best,
and we love what we do andwe love sharing our gifts, so
it's so fun. We're competing, yes, at the end of the day,
but we love each other. AndI think people don't realize that you

(04:23):
said that you had been a judgefor Miss Nebraska. Well I did.
Miss Team Nebraska so wonderful, andI was so impressed with how quick on
their feet these young girls were becausejust you have to answer some tough questions.
Oh yeah, and you have todo so much. Like you said,
this is just the start of yourday today. You have so many
things on your schedule. Yes.Yeah. The quick on your feet,

(04:44):
I think is something that's really it'sfun to learn. It can be nerve
wracking at times, but I've seengirls that have competed in this program for
years. They may never win thecrown, but they get better and better
at just being able to share theirstory, share their opinions. And that's
what I think it does for youngwomen to be honest, is riv I've
been a time where you have tothink, say to yourself, my knees
are shaking, how do you keepyour knees from shaking, you know,

(05:08):
because that's a lot of pressure. So my knees don't shake, but my
feet kind of shake in my heels. So I've been standing there like before
they call the top eleven and myfeet are shaking. I'm like, why
does this only happen right now?Can they actually see this from the stage.
But it's okay because I've noticed ithappens to everybody. I've never a
feeder shaking. Yeah, because you'rein your heels right and you have that

(05:30):
little heel to stand on your feetare kind of like, you know,
going like, oh man, sois it going to make you nervous?
So with all the coverage or theMiss America patch, and have you thought
about that or you kind of gettingyourself psyched for it? Yeah, you
know every day sometimes it sinks ina little bit more and I'm like,
wow, I'm going to Miss America. That's pretty surreal. But I'm honestly
really excited again to skate at thenational level, to showcase the sport that's

(05:53):
meant so much to me that honestlypeople don't realize still exists. So that's
really really exciting. So I've justbeen trying to go into it that perspective
of, you know, this couldbe nerve wracking, but this is awesome.
So someone once said you can't benervous if you're grateful, and I
think that's so true because just thinkingabout how amazing this will be kind of
help settle back the nerves and we'reall going to have them. So it's

(06:14):
okay. And you said that you'vebeen working at this for like ten years
to get to this point, sois this something you dreamed of doing when
you were a young girl. Iwill say I met my first title holder
when I was like six, andI looked up to her. I thought
she was amazing and beautiful. ButI never thought that would be me.
I was an athlete, I wasyou know, very into the outdoors,
and I was like, Oh,that's great for them, that's so fun,

(06:34):
but not for me. And thenI did it, and then I
decided, wait, I actually Icould do this. I really want to
do this. And I think Ilearned that my voice matters and my story
matters, and I can make adifference. And I knew through the Miss
America platform, the one hundred yearsof history that it has of just changing
lives and being a world changer,I knew I wanted to take part in
it. Will you be sure andlet us know when it is settled as

(06:56):
far as it dates, Absolutely, and we'll be cheering. Four. Thank
you, and Gina, I havemy crown, so we might have to
like on your head and do alittle moment. I just I just got
finally a real crown. Their momentthat will be up on Instagram within seconds
after you leave. That is well. Listen congratulations. We appreciate you coming

(07:17):
in and chatting with us Miss Nebraska, Rachel Warren, hopefully Miss America Raca
Warren. It's a matter of months. Thank you.
