Nicola Toki: Forest and Bird chief executive on the 'unprecedented' interest in the Bird of the Century competition - The Sunday Session with Francesca Rudkin

The Sunday Session with Francesca Rudkin

Guarantees the Bird of the Century results won't be as convoluted as our own election - despite delays.

The competition closes tonight at 5pm, and voters all over the world will be waiting with bated breath as the results will be revealed next Wednesday.

An international push for the puteketeke led by comedian and TV host John Oliver drew in hundreds of thousands of votes, delaying the announcement.

Forest and Bird chief executive Nicola Toki says her team are working hard to ensure all the votes are verified amid 'unprecedented' demand.

"Our previous record for votes was two years ago, where we got a top number of 56,000. We'd pretty much clocked that within a couple of hours of the Last Week Tonight show, featuring John Oliver's impassioned rant."
