Abbas Nazari was just 7 years old when he and his family decided to flee the Taliban rule in Afghanistan.Out at sea, on a small fishing boat, with over 400 other asylum seekers, their boat started to sink.The group were saved by a Norwegian cargo ship, The Tampa. Turned away by Australia, Nazari and his family were some of the few resettled in New Zealand.That terrifying journey was 20 years ago this week and Nazari bus has shared his story in a book ‘After the Tampa: From Afghanistan to New Zealand’.
He spoke to Francesca Rudkin about the Taliban taking control in Kabul "the whole city is gripped with fear about what might happen next" and how he can see links to when he and his family escaped "it's like the whole 20 years have come back full circle."LISTEN ABOVE
