El Ártico es mucho más que una región extensa, con una climatología adversa. Su riqueza en recursos naturales y energéticos, muchos aún por explotar, supone importantes oportunidades económicas y comerciales a quien controle su territorio.
Los países árticos – Finlandia, Noruega, Suecia, Islandia, Dinamarca, Canadá, Estados Unidos y Rusia – son conscientes del potencial del Ártico como zona de gran interés, especialmente ante un deshielo que facilita la llegada y transporte a zonas hasta ahora inaccesibles y la apertura de nuevas rutas comerciales. Países como China ya han mostrado su interés en la construcción de una “ruta polar de la seda”.
La vertiente militar es también fundamental en esta zona. En las últimas décadas Rusia ha invertido más que cualquier otro país ártico en adquirir rompehielos, desarrollar tecnología de misiles, incluyendo misiles de crucero hipersónicos, realizar maniobras aéreas, y establecer bases militares.
