In Japan, first impressions matter. A lot. Put your foot in your mouth and you could end up ruining a potential friendship, having your bosses dislike you, or living next to a neighbor who may be silently plotting your demise because you've annoyed them.
Devon knows all of this. He's prepared for it. And yet, he can't help getting himself into one or two odd situations along the way. Find out exactly how he navigates his way out of...
Hotaru's summer festival is just around the corner, and since they're the hottest items in town the new English teachers are all invited! They also work for the city and are expected to be there, but still...
What's expected at a traditional Japanese festival? For starters, there's a formal banquet. Then there's dancing. And finally there's enjoying the festival itself. Best of all, the spotlight will be on them the whole time.
What's in a couch? For most people, it's an assemblage of springs, wood, and fabric. And that's exactly what Devon figured when he set out on a journey far from Hotaru to find the perfect one. The one couch to rule them all and finally tie his room together.
But when he goes shopping, Devon learns that there can be more memories and feelings wound up in a pile of pillowy softness than he ever imagined.
We're talking about much more...
Senpai is a word that even Devon has heard before, but he's a little confused as to what it means. Not only the strict definition, but also how they might affect his position in the town of Hotaru.
Find out just how insecure Devon gets when his new senpais, Victor and Mio, come to town in Chapter 8 of Forever Foreign.

Chiron's annual English camp is about to start, and no one is more excited than Devon's bosses, Timothy and Kaori. But there's a surprise in store for them when the campus they thought they'd completely rented out ends up being infested by cockroaches masquerading as Minerva employees.
That's how Timothy sees the people that work for Chiron's rival English teaching company, at least. But Devon - and most of the other Hotaru newbies...
It’s day 2 of Chiron's annual English camp and things are getting even more tense. What is this plot that Timothy’s devised to prank Minerva's employees? Does Devon have what it takes to carry it out? And won’t someone think of the children?!
The hot Japanese summer is heating up even more in Chapter 10 of Forever Foreign.

Back to the grind! Or rather, back to more free time before Japan's second school semester starts and Devon needs to start doing some real work.
With that free time, Devon decides that he's fluent in Japanese (he's not), that he's capable of social nuance (questionable), and that he's got the ability to stay cool under the pressure of novel interactions with gym staff (incorrect).
