Dieses Zitat von Nelson Mandela ist eine Erinnerung daran, dass Bildung nicht nur dazu dient, Wissen anzuhäufen, sondern auch dazu, uns selbst, und die Welt um uns herum zu verstehen und zu verändern. Eine solche Vorstellung reicht dabei weit über unsere modernen Konzepte von Bildung hinaus. So wurde auch im Mittelalter der Begriff der „Bildung“ nicht nur als das bloße Ansammeln von Wissen betrachtet, sondern als ein umfassender Prozess, der sowohl die intellektuelle als auch die moralische Entwicklung des Menschen miteinschloss.
Wie sah diese Entwicklung jedoch konkret aus, welche Bildungsinstitutionen gab es zu der damaligen Zeit? Und wer hatte überhaupt Zugang zur Bildung? Über diese Fragen sprechen Silke Gammer und Tobias Rotzinger mit Dr. Sebastian Engelmann, Juniorprofessor für Allgemeine Erziehungswissenschaft an der PH Karlsruhe.
