(00:00):
Now, I want to read just one verse with you. I know it's an acclimate afternoon,
but we pray that Jesus might pay attention to the word of God and what we have got to say upon it.
The scripture we're going to read is in 1 Corinthians 1 and verse 18.

(00:20):
1 Corinthians 1 and verse 18. For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness,
but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. Let us read it again.
For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness,

(00:42):
but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
We know that God will bless to us a reading from his precious word.
Some would maybe ask the question, why do we stand here on a Sunday afternoon
and seek to preach the gospel?

(01:03):
Some people say, well, they're foolish.
Why do you give up your time just in a wet afternoon to preach the gospel?
Well, the scriptures remind us the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness.
And maybe there's someone on the hearing of my voice today that says,

(01:24):
well, it is foolishness.
I want to tell you, dear soul, it's not foolish because God would want us to
know that we need to know the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior if ever we're going to be in heaven.
Given my Bible makes it absolutely clear that you and I were only here for a

(01:45):
short period of time, then eternity.
And maybe people in the hearing of my voice today would say,
well, that's a long time off.
I want to tell you, we do not know what a day may bring forth.
And one thing I want to assure you today, we need to be ready for eternity.
Because if you look around us this afternoon, you have to realize that we read

(02:10):
the papers, we would look upon the TV screens, we would look upon, listen on the radio.
All of these things would point to one thing, that we're living in strange times.
Wickedness of man is great.
We look upon the confusion amongst the powers that be.

(02:31):
And I want to tell you, dear friend, the Bible is so up to date.
It tells us of all of these things.
And that is why the preaching of the cross this afternoon is not foolish.
So what is the preaching of the cross?
We're not here to tell you about a cross at a place called Calvary while it
is true. Andrew, we're not here to preach about a wooden structure and say that

(02:55):
we need to hold on to a cross.
I want to tell you we preach today a person, the person of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Bible makes it absolutely clear that when we preach about the cross,
we preach about a person who died upon the cross, God's beloved son.
You know, there was a time past when Philip, he entered into that city.

(03:20):
And you know, when he looked upon the people, it says he preached unto them Jesus.
And I want to tell you, dear soul, today, that's the person that you need today
if ever you're going to be in heaven.
We preach the person of the Lord Jesus Christ.
I want to tell you this afternoon, there is no one ever lived upon this earth

(03:42):
like him because he was spotless. He was pure.
He came from heaven itself, as we sometimes sing in the hymn.
Down from the glory, the Savior came. Down to the cross and the death of shame.
Gazing in wonder, I there exclaim, Jesus died for me.

(04:03):
I wonder, dear soul today, what does Christ mean to you? You,
is Christ your saviour today?
Because without Christ, you'll never be in heaven.
And every single person that's going to heaven can hold on to the fact that
they know the person who died upon the cross, God's beloved son, and can say of a truth,

(04:26):
the son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.
I ask you, dear soul, unto the hearing of my voice today, day.
What are you dependent upon for eternity?
I'm glad I know Christ as my Saviour. I'm glad there's a moment in my experience,
my life's experience, when I came to know Christ.

(04:47):
I came to know the person of Christ as my Saviour, realized that he died for
me upon the cross of Calvary.
I'm just reminded of a story of a young lad over in the city of Glasgow, go.
And I hear that he was lost. You know, as the policeman, he looked upon him

(05:08):
and he says, what's wrong with you, son? Oh, he says, I'm lost.
I can't find my way home. Oh, he says, where do you live? I can't remember the
address that I live at. But he says, I'll tell you something.
He says now, and in Glasgow, there's a place called the Glasgow Cross.
He says, if I could get my way to the cross, the Glasgow Cross,

(05:31):
he says, I can make my way home.
I say today, friend, if you want to be in heaven today, I want to point you
to the cross because you can get to the cross of Calvary. You can know there
that there's one who died for you, for your sins, at the cross.
So today we preach unto you the cross.

(05:52):
But you know, what is the preaching of the cross? I tell you,
it's great tidings, good tidings.
We live in a world today, around us, it's all bad news.
You know, you only have to lift a newspaper, and what do you read?
Oh, you read about catastrophe here. hear. You read about earthquakes in another
place. You read about wars.

(06:13):
You read about awful violence even in our streets, even as I speak today.
I tell you, here is good news. What's the good news?
It's the greatest news that ever came to mortal man.
It's the best news that ever came to Ballet Claire today.
What is it? Christ died for sinners.

(06:34):
Christ died for sinners. For when we were yet Yet without strength,
in due time, Christ died for the ungodly.
You see, today, many people don't like to be reminded they are ungodly.
Many people don't like to think about those that are foolish today.
Oh, you know, we like to look upon ourselves as good living people.

(06:57):
We like to look upon ourselves as those who are self-righteous.
But the Bible says, all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
You and I, when we come into this world, we were born a sinner,
born in the outside place.

(07:26):
So death has passed upon all men for that all have sinned. You see,
dear soul, today, you might look upon yourself as good living.
You might look upon yourself as self-righteous. But in the eyes of the Almighty God, all have sinned.
You and I, we've started out the road of life, a sinner by nature, a sinner by practice.
Because of Adam's sin in the Garden of Eden. But you know, there's good news. Oh, it's great news.

(07:52):
You know, if I was to say to you today that down the road there's a shop and
it's giving everything away for nothing, you say, now, man, you're off your head.
Well, I tell you, I can't guarantee that, that there's things that are being given away.
But I tell you this, there's good news, because God has given salvation to the

(08:13):
whosoever will. God has given you hope for eternity.
He's given you the opportunity to repent of your sins, to put your trust in
Christ, his only son, who died upon the cross of Calvary.
That's the reason why John 3 and verse 16 is so precious.
For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son,

(08:38):
that whosoever believeth on
him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Is that not good news?
Someone, does that mean that I can have my sins forgiven?
Does that mean that I can occupy a place in heaven?
Yes, friend, that's what the Bible says. And God said it. It's absolutely true.

(09:01):
Today, you can have salvation.
What have I got to pay for it? What have I got to do for it?
I tell you, the Bible says, he that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life.
And today, the door is open. it. The opportunity is given to you.
And I tell you, the opportunity is given today, not tomorrow.

(09:24):
Because we do not know what a day may bring forth.
Today is the day of salvation.
Today is the day you can know your sins forgiven. And the good news is God is willing to forgive.
Not only do we preach about the cross, not only do we preach good tidings,
but today we tell you, dear friend, we preach forgiveness.

(09:48):
Yes, we read those verses. Be it known unto you, therefore, men and brethren,
that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins.
There's no one that God cannot forgive.
I want to tell you the Bible makes it absolutely clear that there was salvation

(10:08):
provided for all mankind at the cross of Calvary. No one is excluded.
Christ loved a world of sinners lost and ruined by the fall.
Salvation, full at highest cost, he offers free to all. The forgiveness of sins.
You know, sometimes when we look upon ourselves, we do a bad deed.

(10:32):
Perhaps we offend our neighbour.
We've to offend our friend. And you know, they would say to you,
well, I forgive you. Well, I'll not forget it.
They'll always remember it. I want to tell you, God is willing to forgive your
sins and he removes them as far as the east is from the west.
Never again to be reviewed.

(10:55):
When a soul puts their trust in Christ, God makes them as white as snow.
He that believeth, he says, hath everlasting life.
Today, forgiven.
I'm glad today God forgave me. Oh, I'm glad today that I never receive the penalty
of my sin, that which I deserved,

(11:18):
that because I was born a sinner, I lived a sinner, and I'm glad today my sins are all gone,
forgiven by the God of eternity, And I made as white as snow Says someone today
Could that happen to me? Yes.
I know today there's many people that have lived awful lives.

(11:40):
You know, the Apostle Paul, he told us one day of a faithful saying, a true saying.
He says, this is a faithful saying.
It's worthy of all acceptation that Christ Jesus came into the world to save
sinners. You know what he says?
Of whom I am chief. I tell you, dear soul, today,

(12:04):
the filers to offender that truly believe God will save them and make them right
for heaven, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins.
I'm saddened today when I speak to people and they say, I live the best I can.
I live a good life. And I will hope that whenever I get to eternity,

(12:28):
when I come to the boundary line and into God's eternity, God will look upon
all of those good deeds that I have done.
He will look upon all of those charitable acts that I've performed.
And he'll weigh them all up and say, now, well, you're a good person.
You can go to heaven. the Bible says it's not of works.
It's not of works, lest any man should boast.

(12:51):
Salvation is by faith, faith in a risen Christ, faith in a Christ of God that
paid the price of our sins upon the tree.
And today he's offering you forgiveness, forgiveness, full and free.
And today, what a joy it is that we preach the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

(13:13):
We preach the the person of Christ who died upon the cross, God's beloved Son.
We preach unto you the good tidings of salvation, that Christ receiveth sinful men.
And we preach unto you the forgiveness of sins.
To someone, what will happen for someone who passes into eternity that's saved?

(13:36):
They have truly a home in heaven.
And today, I want to tell you.
We preach deliverance. You see, the Lord Jesus Christ, when he was here upon
earth, the greatest preacher that ever walked on this earth, God's beloved son.
What did he preach? It says he preached deliverance to the captives.

(13:58):
He preached that there was recovery and sight to the blind.
He preached that there was those who would be set at liberty,
set free from the bondage of sin.
And today, what a deliverance. You know, I'm glad I've been delivered from the penalty of my sins.
All my sins were laid in Christ.

(14:20):
Jesus bore them on the tree. God who knew them, he laid them upon his son.
And believing, I am free. What a deliverance.
And I tell you today, all of the politicians of the world could never save you.
All of the religious leaders of the the world could never save you,
but he that believeth on God's Son can be delivered.

(14:42):
Delivered from what? Delivered from the penalty of sin.
I'm glad today I can say the torment and the fire mine eyes will never see. Why?
Because I've been delivered from the bondage of sin, and my sins were nailed
to the cross of Calvary when Christ died for my sins.
Today, let me come to the the question, do you know deliverance?

(15:07):
Do you know Christ as your saviour? Because I want to tell you this,
you're just a breath away from a lost eternity.
Just this for a moment, pause it. Just pause for a moment in your thinking.
If God was to close his hand upon your breath this afternoon,
even into this wet afternoon in Ballie Claire, if God was to take you into eternity,

(15:32):
Bernadette, where would you be?
Those that are saved can say, oh, today I got to the cross of Calvary.
I realized at a moment in my life that Christ died for me. I have no fear for eternity.
You know, we don't like to talk about death, but death comes.

(15:52):
It reaps its sheaves on every hand, the old, the young, on sea and land.
I ask you today, what about your soul?
How are you dependent upon Christ today? day. Have you ever received the forgiveness of sins?
I tell you today, wouldn't this be a wonderful wet afternoon that some boy,
some girl could say, I would love to be saved.

(16:15):
Oh, I would love to know my sins forgiven.
I would love to know that all is well for eternity.
I tell you, here's the opportunity. And I want to tell you, I couldn't save you.
There's not a man or woman in the car park this afternoon, nor throughout the
whole world today could save you, but Christ can.
What did Christ do? He died himself upon the cross of Calvary.

(16:38):
He shed his precious blood, and we can say of a truth today.
His blood, it cleanses from all sin.
You know, we sometimes sing that hymn with the children sometimes,
what can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
What can make me whole again? Again, nothing but the blood of Jesus.

(16:59):
I asked you the question, are you saved this afternoon?
Do you know your sins forgiven?
Or are we just, as many would look upon us, just say we're foolish.
You're wasting your time.
I remember giving out tracts over in Scotland one time and I knocked on a man's
door and he came and he says, what do you want?

(17:20):
I says, I would like to give you a little gospel booklet.
Oh, he says, man, you're only wasting your time. He says, that stuff,
I just put it in the bin. And we had a conversation about it.
And you know, he says, I don't believe there is a God.
I remember talking to him and he says, I don't believe there is such a person
as God. I said, what about you then?

(17:42):
I said, what's going to happen to you when you leave this world?
He says, that's the end of me. I'll be dead. They'll put me in a box.
They'll put me in the ground and that's the finish.
My Bible makes it absolutely clear. We have a soul.
We have a soul that's going to live throughout eternity, either in heaven or in hell.
And I said to him, I says, little plants are growing there.

(18:06):
I says, do you make them grow? He says, well, I help them.
I says, could you make that plant grow? He says, well, I'll do my best.
I says, I want to tell you, the God that I speak about today is the God of life.
He's the God that makes them grow. And you know, we look upon the rain around
us today, and you know, we have to say, it's God that gives the rain for the things to grow.

(18:29):
And this is the day that the Lord hath made.
He says, let us rejoice and be glad in it. And even though it's raining,
We must remember God's in control and he is the God of life.
That dear man, well, he says, I'll think about it. And he did take the gospel track.
I want to tell you, dear soul, today, don't be putting salvation off.

(18:49):
Just take a moment, look upon yourself and say, am I ready to die? Am I ready for eternity?
Because there's a day coming when we're going to have to face it.
And it's either in heaven or in hell.
I'm glad that I can rest my head upon a pillow at night. No matter what happens,
whether I see another day, there's one thing I can be sure of, of a home in heaven.

(19:13):
And dear friend, today, it's wonderful to think I'm going to look upon a man in whom I have trusted.
A man that I've put my faith and trust in for all eternity.
He died for me. He took my place. He suffered in my stead.
He took my sins and bore them in his own body on the tree. So today,

(19:34):
we've preached the cross.
I quote my verse as I draw my remarks to a close.
The preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness,
but unto us which are saved, is that you today?
Unto us that are saved, it is the power of God.
It's wonderful to think that God has the power to save us.

(19:57):
In the very car where you're sitting today, whether you're young or old, God has the power.
What do I need to do? Just believe God. Just believe what he tells us in his
word and come to him as a guilty sinner.
Realize that I deserve eternal death and Christ is willing to forgive me my sins.

(20:19):
And he not only forgives the certain sins, he forgives them all.
And through this man again we preach unto you the forgiveness of sins.
So I leave the message with you. We preach the cross.
We preach the person of Christ today. We preach the good tidings of God's news of salvation.
We preach unto you the forgiveness of sins and we preach unto you the great

(20:41):
deliverance from the awful power of sin.
And you know, dear soul, today many people think they're better in fear for heaven.
Many people think today they're going to heaven all because of their good works.
But I want to tell you today, good works will not save, but faith in Christ
will save you and save you for all eternity.

(21:02):
We trust you might be wise today and you might come to know the Lord Jesus Christ
as your saviour as we close the little meeting as a word of prayer.
Our Father, we bow in thy holy presence at the close of our meeting.
We do thank thee again for the gospel that we
can preach we're thankful again we can preach concerning
the person of our Lord Jesus Christ the one

(21:25):
who died and suffered for sinners upon the
tree and we pray this afternoon that thou will draw near and those that have
heard the scriptures read and the gospel preached that they may lay this message
to their own souls and seek the Lord while he may be found and call upon him
while he is near look upon us now as we part pray thy safe journey will be given to us,

(21:47):
but best of all we long that the Spirit of God may still move in the hearts
and minds of sinners and bring them to the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation.
Look upon us now as we give thee our thanks in the Lord's precious name. Amen.
