Fraude in de wetenschap
Zijn nuchtere boek over het wetenschappelijk bedrijf gaf professor Ari Rip in 1978 de passende titel “wetenschap als mensenwerk” mee. Zo is het maar net, wetenschappers zijn gewone mensen. Ook al is hun vak wat apart, en stelt dat hoge eisen.
Als het goed is hebben wetenschappers veel zelfkritiek. Maar ze hebben zeker ook hun zwakheden. Angst voor de carrière, afgunst, hebzucht, arrogantie, gemakzucht, het ligt allemaal op de loer. Het is achteraf verbazingwekkend dat Arie Rip het in zijn boek het nauwelijks over fraude had. Want dat komt zeker voor. Soms zelfs buitensporig, zoals in twee grote affaires in Nederland.
Maar misschien toch wel steeds vaker op kleinere schaal. De huidige druk om je staande te houden in de wetenschap is enorm, je moet veel en vooral toppublicaties scoren, veel geld binnen halen en goede kontakten aanknopen.
Er zijn maar weinig vaste banen, en de competitie is hevig. En dan is er commerciële druk, ook vanuit fake tijdschriften en conferenties. Het is de kritische insteek waarmee het wetenschapsveld zich uiteindelijk redt, vasthoudend aan normen van integriteit en onderlinge toetsing .
