Het is groen en het eet mieren. Een specht?.
De groene specht roffelt zelden, maar lacht des te luider. De karakteristieke roep verraadt de aanwezigheid van deze miereneter eerder dan dat je hem ziet. Deze middelgrote vogels klauteren soepel over bomen, verplaatsen zich met een golvende vlucht, een paar vleugelslagen afgewisseld door een korte glijvlucht, naar andere bomen of naar de grond.
Want vooral daar jagen ze op hun voedsel: mieren. Hun snavel is vergeleken met andere spechten zwak, niet geschikt om in bomen naar insecten te hakken. Daarvoor hebben ze een extra 10 cm lange tong met weerhaken, waarmee ze met gemak mieren en mierenlarven vangen, vooral in grasland.
