Christian Taylor aka Hertz, Juan Martinez aka Fear Factor, Richard Chavez aka Camelbak, discuss F3: a national network of free, peer-led workouts for men. The Fs stand for Fitness, Fellowship and Faith. Their mission is to plant, grow and serve small workout groups for men for the invigoration of male community leadership. We had a lot of fun talking about how their community has their own way of talking and how every man is welcome, no matter their age or fitness level. Welcome to Houston, PA, Houston'spublic affairs show and iHeartMedia Broadcast. Our

My name is Laurent I am theTexan from France, and I welcome F

(00:27):
three. It's a fitness program thatis probably the coolest fitness program you've ever
heard of. Just wait until theseguys explain to you how it works.
It's not just about fitness, it'salso about brotherhood and the best kind of
masculinity and friendship that we don't talkabout anymore because we've gotten so distracted by
toxic masculinity so that we've forgotten howcool guys actually are naturally, and how

(00:50):
we build friendships like no other peopleon the planet. We're kind of special
in the way we build friendships. And you're going to find out that F
three does just that. When youshow up the first time you get to
work out with these guys, they'refriendly, they give you a nickname,
you're kind of inducted into a greatgroup of people. And we're gonna talk
about their entire program with me todayis Christian Taylor aka Hertz, Juan Martinez

(01:14):
aka Fear Factor, and Richard Chavezaka Camelback, And well, gentlemen who
would like to explain to us whyyou all have nicknames? Which would be
a great way to explain how Fthree works. And by the way,
while you're listening to this, you'reprobably gonna want to look into it if
you're a guy. Their website isF three nation dot com. F three
nation dot com. They have placesin New Zealand where you can go work

(01:40):
out with these guys. It's allover the world. They've got an awesome
website with a map. You zoomin, you find your neighborhood. You
can find the workout program this rightnext to you. It's all free.
And we're gonna talk about how theypull off this knee trick because they've got
an app. It's a huge programof people that are all around. I
don't know how they make it work, why they are here, So gentlemen

(02:00):
who would like to explain to mewhat F three is, how it works,
and why y'all all have a coolnickname. Our disclaimer F three disclaimer,
All right, Richard, we're notprofessionals we're here voluntarily, right,
So anything we say, yeah,it's our own something we've learned or come

(02:20):
across along the way of this journey. But we'll start with fear Factor.
Who's our nan ten four Ben?Yeah, So what was that? So
F three, you know, isa network of free men's workouts and basically
anyone can start an F three location. You can start one in your neighborhood.

(02:43):
Just so happens that in the Houstonarea there's over fifty locations alone,
And so what happens is those areaskind of break up into regional locations.
And what we found over time isthat some of the more experienced guys actually
take leadershi positions within a region, which is, you know, a group

(03:04):
of locations that are pretty close together. Think of it as a steering committee,
right, Yeah, we call ita board, and it's comprised of
a nantan who is the guy thatis the spiritual leader of that particular region.
And really, when I say spiritual, we're talking about keeping the principles
and philosophy of F three alive andmaking sure that the guys are following kind

(03:27):
of the same playbook. And thoseprinciples are the principles are well. Let's
start with the mission of F three. The commission of F three is to
plant, grow, and serve smallworkout groups for men for the invigoration of
male community leadership. It's a mouthful, yeah, but it's important. We've
lost track of that. We're animportant part of society and that's what we
do best. That you just said, that's right, and so there's a

(03:49):
recognition that men, you know,in our lives or leaders, our families
look up to us, our communities, our co workers. But a lot
of guys forget that. Things happento you in life, you get kind
of beat down, go through somebad times. And what we're doing in
F three is reminding men that we'reall leaders and we're you know, at

(04:11):
any moment in our lives called uponto take that torch and lead. And
so that's really what the mission isoutlining. We're freemen's of workout group,
but really we're a leadership group. And part of what we instill in men
is if you can lead a workoutthat starts to build the fundamentals of trust
and confidence and teaches you, itreminds you that you are a leader.

(04:33):
And good health and good health rightand we can go deep into this because
there's there's so many components to Fthree. But you know we talked about
earlier the three F stand for fitness, fellowship, and faith. Fitness is
the foundation of everything. A manthat is in good health has the ability

(04:55):
to enact change in the world, has the ability to do things. That
man is now freed to work onhis relationships with other men, and you
know, build a coalition of menthat are like minded, that are all
moving in the same direction, andthen those men are able to come together
and do amazing things in the world. And that's the faith component. Right,
So fitness, fellowship, and faith. And again F three is non

(05:18):
denominational. We're open to all men, so we respect everyone's belief system.
We just ask that men believe insomething greater than themselves and that kind of
encompasses all three of those principles.Well, that's that believing in something greater
than yourself is the fundamental Uh,it's the foundation of being a good leader.
That's right, because you don't youdon't lead just to make yourself bigger.

(05:41):
No, that's what it has tobe for other reasons, for other
people. Right, And and you'llfind you know, when when we get
you to come to the first workoutthere early in the morning, I'll talk
a little bit about my journey intofitness to come out. We will,
eh. But but going back atthe first hurts is the first step.

(06:02):
Q camel Back is the weasel shaker? Well, why do you call the
weasel shaker? It's not so muchdo you wear gloves, It's not so
much the animal, but the weaselshaker. The role is to ensure that
the man or the that stepped upto commit to something, to make sure

(06:24):
he's not weaseling out of that responsibility. Weaseling you. So you're shaking out
the posers. Yeah, exactly, excellent following up, Hey, how's it
going, where you at, howyou doing? How can I support you?
How can we support you? Whatelse are you needing? And then
we go from there. So traditionally, in the sense that the role is

(06:45):
is kind of the timekeeper, iskind of the one that's taking all the
notes and making sure every meetings arein line and set up appropriately and everything
like that, which you know, there are others that are well more up
to doing that than I am.But it does a great job. But
you know, the role I hadbefore this was you know, there are

(07:06):
two other roles you know, thatmake up comprise of this SLT. They
shared the Leadership Team, which isthe second f Q, you know,
responsible for the fellowship. So makingsure we're all connecting in some way or
another, right, whether that's ahappy hour, that's coordinating the lunch together,

(07:27):
that's making sure hey, you know, after the workout for us typically
it's on a Saturday and we havecoffee afterwards, you know, where we
can congregate, we can come togetherand we can get to know each other
at a deeper level, you know, past the workout. And then lastly,
with the role that I really thatI started with the soot that I
really found a lot of growth andenjoyment out of was the third f Q,

(07:53):
so the faith Q. So that'sreally trying to figure out, Okay,
how do we get back to thecommune any how do we instill certain
experiences within the men that will helpthem to grow and mature and become the
leaders that we need them to be, you know, that servant leadership so
that you know, I spent alot of my time within that role before

(08:16):
transitioning to this role. Now.But yeah, I mean there's there's Yeah,
any type of role you can thinkof. You know, if it's
a flag que or it's the guythat's we have the shovel flags that will
plant. That's how you'll know it'san aftere working because it'll be an American
flag and have three flag at minimum. We like flags right for us here

(08:39):
more men will have a flag forthat specific AO or area of operations,
right, so they'll have their logoor they're designed. Right, There's tons
of roles. There's tons of waysthat you can lead, and you can
step up and you can volunteer. At the end of right, it goes
back to the core principles if youwant to take that one. Yeah,

(09:01):
just to tap into what came allback was saying, So, I'm the
first f Q. I'm the fitnessmaking sure that you know, we have
certain standards for fitness. I mean, we do have a disclaimer to modify
any exercise as you feel necessary. We tell everybody to push yourself, but

(09:22):
don't hurt yourself. Yeah, Somy job is to sort of make sure
that all the aos, the areasof operation that workout locations essentially are you
know, each AO has what's calledan aoq, which is a guy in
charge of that location, to makesure that they're all sort of running like
well oiled machines. They're getting newguys to come, the guys that are

(09:45):
coming or staying. You know,we always start on time, we always
end on time. We're really strictabout that. We start typically at five
point thirty in the morning on weekdaysand go till six fifteen. So it's
an intense forty five minute workout ifyou want it to be. But let's
say if somebody is listening and they'rethinking to themselves, these guys sound like

(10:05):
they're super fit, and they are, uh, and I'm overweight. I'm
grossly overweight, and I need tostart slowly. Can I still come?
Yeah? So what can What ifI can't run? What if I can't
do push ups? That's okay,we we so again you can modify as
necessarily. If my whole mentality isif we're doing push ups and you can't

(10:28):
do them, do squats. Justkeep moving, don't just stop and watch
us everybody else working out, Like, keep doing something, you know,
even if it's just walking around, marching in place. You know, yeah,
you know that that's that's a bigthing, don't you know, keep
moving for forty five minutes. Wehave all fitness le levels represented, and

(10:48):
we have guys that are you know, just absolutely physical specimens. And then
we have guys that, you know, maybe they find themselves in a place
in life where they've overeaten, orthey stop moving and they're you know,
they're heavy, and maybe they haveknee issues, maybe they have back issues.
Those guys still come and they're stillwelcome their courage to work out to
their level of fitness. I mean, just looking at us, right,

(11:11):
if if you had a video camera, you could see us. Right,
we're physical sphere. Yeah, youare super fit middle aged dudes. We're
just we're just regular dudes that ifworked out and and and that's it,
right. We're not Olympic athlete, right, although I think there's one or
two guys you know, within thebunch that would qualify would qualify as that.

(11:35):
Right. But I would say that'simportant because I think that something like
this can be super intimidating and we'lltalk about that. You're listening to Houston,
PA, Houston's Public Affairs Show.My name is Laurent and today I
welcome F three the Fitness Nation thereonline at F three nation dot com.
F three nation dot com. Youcan click on that link and see a

(11:56):
really beautifully well designed website that willlet you look at the app and find
an F three workout program near you. They're all over the world literally,
which is awesome. There's a bunchof them around this town and it's all
free. It's unbelievable. You justshow up the day you decide to start.
You show up, They welcome you. Everybody is welcome, and just

(12:18):
as he explained, it doesn't matterwhat your fitness level is. It really
matters that you want to become morefit than you are today. And they're
not going to say you gotta dotwenty push up or you're a loser.
That's not at all how the programworks. And they've explained that. I
think that's super important. That's whythey're on the show. It's really open
minded and there's a lot of freedomwithin the program to do as you feel.

(12:39):
You know, listen to your body. It's going to tell you whether
or not you can run that mileor whatever they want to do that morning.
With me today are Juan Martinez akaFear Factor, Richard Chavez aka Camelback,
and Christian Taylor aka Hurts and onceagain F three nation dot com.
F three Nation dot com. Uhthat you've already explained that you don't want

(13:03):
people to not do anything and justwatch you work out. But if we're
talking about someone who thinks that thebrotherhood that you create is something that would
really be motivating to them. Butlike you said, you know, they're
they're just they're overweight, their kneeshurt, and they know that they can't
do very much. Can you showup with like an appropriate dumb bail that
you can use and maybe walk aroundthe circle and and do do some things

(13:28):
that are maybe outside of the mainworkout program or how does that work?
Because you have to have people ofdifferent fitnesses at every meat you do.
I mean what we ask is youjust you show up with an open mind,
you know, ready to ready toget to work. You know,
bring some hydration, especially in thesemonths, bring some gloves if you want.
You don't need to bring any weight. Typically we usually provide it in

(13:52):
the form of what we refer toas coupons, which are essentially cinderblocks.
Cool. That's that's what we workout with with a ironical term for we
call them coupons, so a lotof time, A lot of the exercises
or bodyweight exercises push up, situps, jumping jacks. We have various
names for those, but you'll haveto so that answer that question. All

(14:13):
these body weight exercises are inherently adaptable. You can always if you don't want
to do a full pup plank pushup, you can do one from your
knees or et cetera, et cetera. You can modulate to your body's needs
so that you don't hit a wallthe minute you walk in. You can
actually participate and then progress correct, that's right. And typically the person that's

(14:37):
leading the workout will, you know, ask does anybody have a physical limitation
and they'll work with that person tosuggest modifications to the workout. And again
it's a pure led workout. Soevery day that you come to an F
three workout, it's going to bea different person leading, which goes back
to the mission of F three, which is to invigorate male community leadership,

(14:58):
right. And so one of thethings that we do is when a new
guy comes into the group, wegive them time to figure out the you
know, the format of how wework out how we structure the workout and
what the exercises might look like, and then after probably a few weeks,
we asked that that man sign upfor his first que, which is to

(15:20):
lead a workout, no kidding, and we call that a VQ. It's
your virgin que. So that's thefirst time you will ever lead a workout.
And what we'll do is assign him, probably a buddy to bounce ideas
off of him to help them structurethat workout, and then that person will
come and lead the workout for thefirst time, and you know, the

(15:41):
guys will give them feedback on whatwent well, what could he work on,
and so it's a process, rightAnd part of the reason why F
three is free is because it ispure led. Nobody is receiving any compensation
for leading workouts. It's just aprocess of getting men to come out to
do that for workout, to realizethat they're stronger than they thought they were,

(16:03):
and they instill them with confidence byasking them to lead a workout sometime
in the future. Who buys thecinder blocks the coupons, Well, I
means a three dollars. Yeah, they're very local hardware. Story. So
everybody just everybody just sort of buysthem at will whenever they want. But

(16:23):
to sort of tie all this together, you've heard him talk about peer led
and free and and you know, open to guys. We have five principles
that we follow. The first oneis that all the workouts are free.
You never have to pay any money. There's no monthly fees, no gym
fees, nothing like that. Soit's no registration. You're registration for anything,

(16:44):
and you're gonna get an email everyday every hour system yeah, brotherhood.
So it's free. It's open toall men, no matter fitness level,
you know, anything, any culturalbackground, it's open, doll men.
Being in Houston for Ben, right, you got this huge melting pot

(17:07):
of culture and religion and yeah,id you have everybody you know for four
Bend for our regions specifically, Imean we have every type of cultural background
you can think of, right,I think what we are lacking our frenchmen.
Yeah, no way, there's liketwenty thousand French people in town,
so ten thousand got to be guysor first one. So you just don't

(17:32):
know anything, right, and it'sso yeah, So the first principle is
free. Second principle opened all men. Third principle is the workouts are held
outdoors rain or shine. The reasonbeing rain or shine is because you can't
control the elements sometimes, like youcan't control the elements in your life.
Sometimes you know, life can comeat you pretty fast. So held outdoors,

(17:55):
rain or shine. Fourth principle isthere pure lead you've heard I actually
talk about that, meaning we eachtake a turn leading a workout, you
know, coming up with a fortyfive minute boot camp style exercise, whatever
that may be for you. Sopeer lead in a rotating fashion. And
then the last principle is the workouts, the beatdowns as we call them,

(18:18):
always ending the circle of trust.Yeah, so let's talk about that because
I think that that's that was oneof the things that attracted me the most
of the program and why I wantedto do this show. Go back to
what I was saying about brotherhood andthe way men evolve friendships, and there's
something very special about that. Ifyou know, guys, most of us

(18:40):
are still friends with a high schoolfriend or a middle school friends. Our
friendships are solid. We tend tohang on to each other even if we
don't talk to each other for twoyears. The phone call comes in and
he's like, yeah, just comeon over and you pick up right where
we left off. It's a veryguy thing. I know women do it
too, but we do it differentlyand it's worth celebrating. I think we
do do it differently. So oneof the things circle of what circle of

(19:04):
trust? I was gonna say faith? So this circle of trust, it's
the last thing you do. Howdoes that? What does that look like?
Literally a circle? I'll let camelBack speak to that because I think
it's an area that he's well versedin. But one of the things you
mentioned that men, you know,we do friendships differently. Yeah, and
that's right. But one of thethings that we find in F three is
that men of a certain age, let's call it mid thirties to you know,

(19:27):
sixties and beyond to us us,right, Yeah, that's right,
and we tend to, you know, pour everything we have into our work,
into our families, and so webecome increasingly isolated from that small group
of loyal friends that we have. And so F three, through all the
you know, the things that we'vetalked about, tries to reconstruct those relationships

(19:49):
in a very meaningful way. Andthat is, you know, one of
the foundational principles of F three isthat men need to reconnect in a very
positive way and lean on lean oneach other because one of the things that
men are terrible at is asking forhelp. Yes, we don't go to
see the doctor either, we don'tdo it. Yeah, And so you'll
find that a lot of guys gothrough some really tough times in life,

(20:11):
and instead of reaching out and saying, you know, hey, camel back
er, hey hurts, I needsome help, they just put their head
down and you know, in alot of cases end up in a worse
position than they were before. Sothe circle of trust is an opportunity to
unburden yourself, right and camel backif you want to speak to that.
Yeah. So after every workout wehave a circle of trust, we count

(20:36):
off, right, because we wantto make sure the number of guys we
started with we finished with so nobody'sleft behind it, which is our credo.
You know, no man left behind, and leave no man where you
found him. And so from there, you know, we'll do our name
Morama, and we'll count off andeveryone will say their name and we'll repeat

(20:59):
that name at the ends as well, and shows support that he was there
and he participated. Right. We'llhave some announcements, and then we go
through taps, also known as thoughtsand prayers, So anything that is weighing
heavy on somebody, or something thatsomebody is going through, or you know,
a praise, right, you know, because with all the terrible things

(21:22):
or tough things that are going onin your life, there's a lot of
things we can celebrate at the sametime. And then we'll close out in
a prayer. Right. It's it'straditionally a Christian based prayer. But but
you're non denominational everyone as well,we're not denominational. Everyone's welcome. What

(21:44):
we do is especially for fort Ben. And one of the things I tried
to impress on the man too isyou know, for those that are agnostic,
right, he you know, usethat if you're the quarterback or the
que you know, you're you're kindof leading that that ending that circle of
trust, you know, make itwhat you want, make it impactful at
the very least, right, Andso what I would typically do, and

(22:08):
I'm Christian myself, right, butyou know, hey, everyone go around
and one thing you're thankful for, right, and then that's how we'll close
out. You know, and forthose that are agnostic or not of Christian
favorite for something, you know, something you can really be grateful for or
thankful for or something like that positivethought and to end, you know that

(22:33):
that workout in that sense. Butit's it's a way where we want men
to be vulnerable. It's a safespace for you to be able to share
and really open up to what's reallyhindering you. Right. So for a
lot of our newer guys or guysthat are not used to opening up,

(22:56):
hey, it don't even you don'teven need to say what it is you're
going going through. Just acknowledge thatthere's something there, right, because we're
all dealing with something. You know, a lot of times, you know,
we have forty men in a workoutand not one that is raising their
hand or saying, hey, Igot a I need help, right hey,
sometimes calling somebody out, Hey,if you have something going on,

(23:18):
just acknowledge, hey, I'm notin a good spot right now. And
that's all you have to say, right, all right, got it?
And we'll pour blessings and kind oflift you up right, and you'll you'll
find that once you leave for thatday, you'll have a few guys that
text you, hey man, ifyou need anything, you need help,
Hey, you don't want to gograb a beer, let's go get a

(23:41):
coffee. I'm there for you.Whatever you need. You'll get a few
guys that call you, hey man, I want you to know that I'm
here for you, right, andjust that alone, right, just acknowledging
that, hey, I need help. There's this this weight that's lifted off
of you, right, and youwon't be able to solve that problem.
I'm not giving you the answers.I don't know what the answers are,

(24:03):
right, But when you know thatsomebody's there for you and can support you,
and can help you and and atsome point maybe even help lead you
and guide you in a certain way. Hey, it's confidence that I can
get through this. Right. Andthe physical part of what we do in
a workout, right, it canbe grueling physically, right if you haven't

(24:26):
really worked out, or you're juststarting your fitness journey, or you feel,
hey, I got to do somethingdifferent. Right, when you're going
through that and you can't run ahalf mile and you're struggling, right,
that you got this guy that's pickingyou up, Hey man, I'll run
with you. Hey, let's justwalk right, Yeah, let's just do
that. Hey, you can't doa push up? Got it? Man?
Hey, let's just roll around onthe ground. I don't you know,

(24:48):
let's do something right you just no, no, no, But you
know it make it as weird asyou want it, right, But from
there it just amplifies to life andhow hey, we're all here together to
show support and encouragement and at theend love. You know, that's what
a lot of these and that's youknow, it's a great way to put

(25:11):
a bow on that because really wetalked about earlier, what if you're the
guy that's never worked out, ormaybe you haven't worked out in a long
time, that is the most importantperson in F three. So we call
those men sad clowns. And that'sit's a term that's borrowed from the Sopranos.
You know, there's a scene whereTony Sopranos says, I'm the sad
clown. I'm laughing on the outside, but I'm crying on the inside.

(25:33):
We just kind of an analogy forwhat a lot of guys go through in
life. Right, you're keeping thatbrave front, you're smiling for your friends
and family, but you're really strugglingbecause you know, maybe work is you
know, crushing you. Maybe you'vegot other problems that you're not really dealing
with. When you come out tothat F three workout, you're the most
important guy there because all of ushave been through that, but we're now

(25:55):
had had our eyes open through this, you know process of you know,
working out together. When you strugglewith somebody's shoulder to shoulder, you build
trust with that person, You understandwho they are intrinsically. From that,
the friendships come, and then wetalk about, you know, the faith
component, which is really lifting guysup and doing good things. And so
that FNG, that guy that's neverbeen to a workout, we want to

(26:15):
make sure that that man has anopportunity to experience all the blessings that we've
experienced, and so he becomes themost important person for that workout. And
that's what F three is built allaround. So I would say to anybody
out there that you know is saying, oh, there's no way I can
work out with these guys, Ithink a lot of people listening are thinking
that, yeah, and it's it'sjust not true. I mean, we've

(26:37):
I've seen so many amazing stories ofguys that have come out and we're,
you know, sixty to eighty poundsoverweight. In fact, we have a
guy, John Moore who goes byTom Kat, that just ran his first
eight mile race, longest race ever, and you know he's lost what sixty
pounds? Yeah, yeah, Soyou know, we had like ten guys
out there to go support him. We're running with him, and you know,

(27:00):
it was a really impactful moment inhis life. And that's a guy
who probably when he first came out, thought there's no way I can keep
up with these guys, and herehe is. He probably couldn't on the
first I mean four months ago,he wasn't a lot of us will meet
before a workout and run or rockor something. We call it a double
down. And he was never aguy to come out and run the extra

(27:22):
credit and everything. And about fourmonths ago he started doing it, and
he put this race on his calendarand you know, I mean, he
couldn't even run a mile four monthsago, and now he just ran this
eight mile race, and like FearFactor said, there was ten twelve of
us out there cheering them on,running next to him. You know,
it's just a really you know, impactful morning to watch this guy. You

(27:45):
know, what is your retention rate? I know you probably don't. I'm
not asking for a precise measure, but like, you know, how often
do people actually come back and notcome back? Like a great question,
I would say, So let's let'stalk about you know, the fng's right,
the guys that came out for thefirst time, maybe because like you,
you know, we just harassed youto the point where you coming out.
