Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome to A Little Bit of Pod.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
I cannot tell you the dopamine that surged through my
body as I left. I'll give them a shout out actually.
Merchants of Lee. It's an op shop in Lee, north
of Auckland, just out of Matakana. Beautiful.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
Is it the one by the Lee sawmill? It's like
the Lee Farms. Yeah, kind of near there.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Just before there, there's a kind of a farm market
sort of space with a few shops and it's there. Right.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
You've been doing a lot of op shopping lately.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Yeah. Thanks.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
I'm low on dopamine. So just finding. You're going to
find it doing getting your deals.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
I talked to my therapist about it. I said, I've
been doing some naughty dopamine seeking.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
And she said, what is it? I said, I've been
op shopping a lot, you know, really hunting for bargains.
She said, I spend a bit of money. She was like,
you know, some people do like heroin. So I think
you're all right. And I was like, thank you, Virginia. Actually,
I know exactly where this is. This is a lovely spot,
isn't it? Lovely spot, eh? There's a caravan park nearby
and an action matakana. Anyway, so Merchants of Lee, right?
I'm heading out there.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
And I'm just having a little looky around, was heading
out to the sawmill for some lunch and whatnot, just
having a nice little cruisy day. And I'm buying, what
did I buy? A hunting horn, one of those old. Why?

Speaker 1 (01:15):
For my wall. Does it come in the mouthpiece? Do
you know that your walls have already got a lot
on them, eh? Yeah, I know.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
More.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
Now they're going to get more. You know you're about
to do an expensive renovation. Yeah, I've just paid a
bunch of bills on that, so now I'm like... But
she's got to have everything filled. It was like before
you said, you know, your torch is on. She's like, yeah,
I'm tracing an empty spot on my leg because she's
got a spot to fill for the tattoo. Yeah, for
a tattoo. When does it end? Excuse me, is this
a personal attack or can I just share with you my...
It's an intervention. I mean, it's nothing. Look at this.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
So I'm going into this and I'm paying for my
hunting horn. And I look behind the shopkeeper's head and
I just see it. And it's the back of a jacket.
It's a bomber style jacket with grey suede tassels, a

(02:06):
fluffy kind of quilted.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Bull horn with a big.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
Silver K and it says Rough Rider with stars. And
I was like, the fuck is that?

Speaker 1 (02:19):
I'm like, oh! I'm like, I have a seizure. And
then he pulls it. He was like, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
He said, that's by Kanzai Yamamoto.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
Oh, of course. Of course, Kanzai Yamamoto. Kanzai Yamamoto. I
have multiple... T-shirts by... Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
I don't think they sell Kasai Yamamoto at AS Car.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
It was Hallenstein's.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
But you'll recognise him as the designer of a pair
of pants or an outfit that David Bowie wore.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
Big flare kind of bubble circle pants. Oh, yes.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
That's the designer, right? And he said it's by this guy.
It's very rare.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
All of his jackets were like one-offs. What's his name again? No,
because I know why you're looking it up. Why? See
how much it costs. You're looking for value. Yamamoto.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
A jacket is worth how much the purchaser is willing
to play.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
I've found him. Yamamoto.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Is he alive?

Speaker 1 (03:08):
Japanese designer. No, he died 2020. Oh, okay. Yeah. Anyway,
so I say– So very influential in the 70s and 80s. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Yeah, right.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Dressed David Bowie. And so I was like– the moment
he said that, I was like, can I try it on?
Which is always the trap because if this thing slips
on and spiritually we bond– I'm screwed and I haven't
even asked price yet. Anyway, so I slipped it on
and it is just, it is just the perfect fit.
Like it's just made for me. Like it's my soul jacket.
And I said to the guy, I was like, are

(03:39):
you selling it? Cause you know, sometimes in vintage stores,
if they've got something really nice, It's to enjoy but
not to buy. It should say on it not for
sale if it's in a shop.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
And he said, I'll part with it for the right person.
They always have a yarn like this. Part with it
for the right person.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
He bought it back in the 80s and has held
on to it ever since and has been waiting for
the right moment to part with it. And it doesn't
really fit him anymore and the length wasn't good. And
I just, it spiritually is my jacket. And I don't
think I've ever felt more. Spiritually bound To a jacket
in my life.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
Really So this is your jacket I.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Think it was meant I was always meant to find
this And I would love to know Who else has
worn it Jesus Christ Okay There's a website called Firstdibs.com
Which I'm guessing is a Website.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
For Vintage Sellers.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
There's a bomber jacket For two and a half thousand
US dollars Yeah I know What the hell Yeah I
know Oh, I didn't even pay a quarter.

Speaker 1 (04:33):
3,000 US for these other ones.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
I know. So I get into the car afterwards and
the guy's like, have fun, you know, researching this design
at Kansai Yamamoto. And I'm doing it. And then you
always wait for the moment when you've bought vintage. I
paid a good, a pretty good price on it. We
did a bit of, would you take, would you take?

Speaker 1 (04:50):
We're not talking this much money. Fuck no.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
Because the moment I looked it up, I was like,
holy shit, I think I've got myself a steal here.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
You've got yourself a bargain. Yeah, I know. But what
did he... He didn't make it. He's just taken something
and decorated it. Or did he stitch it from the
ground up? No, he's made, like, this is like, the
whole thing is made by him. It's not just the decoration.
He was a full clothes designer to Jacket's Bombers.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
This one's 1980 something. But I just, it's so good.
And yeah, I didn't pay, fuck no, I didn't pay thousands.
Some of them were worth five grand.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
I paid a sliver. Oh my God, I'm just, yeah,
I'm looking it up.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
A sliver.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
Yeah, okay, right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Fletch, put it on.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Oh, yes.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think it doesn't look good in it.
It's unisex and it's like. Yeah, it's totally. I'm not
a western kind of a cowboy. No, don't come in.
Because obviously it needs to be dry cleaned. Like it's,
you know, it's just old. It's a little bit pongy.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
No, it's not pongy.

Speaker 1 (05:39):
It's a bit musty. It's like vintage-y.

Speaker 2 (05:43):
Oh.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
Wait, keep my arm. Have you ever put a jacket
on before? Well, she's trying to put my, my arm
goes in there. Yee-haw. I mean, I'd say you'd never
look gayer in your life, but that's, yeah, wow. Really?
Because I've.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
Really?

Speaker 1 (05:56):
Because you didn't see me in Berlin. It does stink,
doesn't it? Yeah, she's an old jacket. I've got to
find a specialist. I feel like it'll work on boys,
but not me. I think it'll be a bit short, maybe. Yeah,
that's nice. Have you had a couple of darts? No,
the darts came with. I don't think I'll dart in
that one. Chuck that in the wash on an hour cycle.

(06:17):
I don't think I probably would have. Oh my God, my...
My whole body just stiffened. I know, but what a fight.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
Honestly, and the dopamine I've received from this is endless.
And every day, like, doesn't that make you feel good, Vaughan?

Speaker 1 (06:30):
Turn around, Rough Rider. Yeah!
