Speaker 1 (00:00):
So a huge home summer coming up for the Blackcaps Mania.
First up against India, they've got five T20s.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Good.
Speaker 3 (00:09):
At least it's not an even number.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
Five one-dayers.
Speaker 4 (00:13):
Great.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
And two tests.
Speaker 5 (00:14):
Oh, for God's sake.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
Then three T20s.
Speaker 4 (00:18):
Great.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Three one-dayers.
Speaker 4 (00:20):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
And two tests versus Sri Lanka. In the middle of it,
they've got a four-test series in Australia.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Have we not learned anything from the South African tour?
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Odd numbers only. tickets are on sale now all those
games at home to talk more about it black cap
ish sody ish when you have a look at that
schedule does that give you anxiety.
Speaker 4 (00:43):
Hey with the with the um even numbers in the
test matches it kind of does because uh you just
reminded me of that.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Actually yeah there's nothing but it's very crooked to have
a draw isn't it it is.
Speaker 4 (00:52):
Very crooked to have a draw now it should be
a really exciting stuff this summer and i think um
Especially with a team like India coming over, I think
the buzz around cricket is going to be massive in
New Zealand. And hopefully we can even get off to
a winning start as Blackcap side.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
As a spin bowler, do you really look forward to
playing India in New Zealand conditions?
Speaker 5 (01:10):
I'll tell you what, early or sort of mid to
late October is going to be pretty cold and green.
Speaker 4 (01:15):
So I'm actually on my way out to Lincoln to
try to see if I can swing the ball.
Speaker 5 (01:20):
In New Zealand.
Speaker 4 (01:22):
I'll let you know how that goes.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Tell me this, Ish, I know that you're constantly working
on different deliveries. Is there any sort of secret delivery
that you're working on behind the scenes? Are we going
to unveil a new one this summer?
Speaker 4 (01:37):
I've been trying a few things out, but like I said,
it's important to try to adapt to the conditions you're
presented with. And like you say, in New Zealand, especially
early in the season, the wickets don't necessarily spin a lot.
So it's more kind of trying to figure out ways
you can deceive better than the air and And, you know,
these days there's a lot of guys trying to swing
the ball in the power plays and things like that.
It's something I've given a crack to.
Speaker 5 (01:56):
Over the last wee while, but maybe be something I
could try and get myself bowling in the power plays
a little bit more.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
Interesting. I mean, for people who don't know a lot
about the intricacies of cricket, is there a worse place
to bowl spin in the world than New Zealand?
Speaker 5 (02:15):
I would say notoriously New Zealand is right up there
with half the mean motor.
Speaker 4 (02:20):
It's pretty small boundaries. Wickets are pretty flat. But the
good thing about that is batters are.
Speaker 5 (02:24):
Always trying to come and score runs, and that always
means that there's always chances to get wickets. So as
a spinner in New Zealand, I think even more so
than places around the world, you have to maintain a
really aggressive mindset because.
Speaker 4 (02:36):
A way to stifle the run rate is by taking wickets,
and that's something that I try to do.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
You're a relatively tall operator, Aish. I can imagine coming
through the grades. Did coaches ever try and, you know...
push you away from bowling spin and into pace perhaps.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
Yeah thanks mate i'm six foot four with boots on
um nah um nah not not necessarily because i've always
been quite a slow twitch fiber type of operator so
not a not.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
A very quick runner but i've got a wrist made
of rubber so that kind of helps.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
Speaking of twitching are you still um getting involved in
your bird watching.
Speaker 4 (03:10):
Every now and then Oh, every now and then, mate.
Spring's a good time, actually. I discovered a kereru nest
the other day. You'd be proud.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Oh, did you? Wow.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
Wonderful.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
Did you? Good eating, apparently, Ish.
Speaker 4 (03:23):
Not anymore, brother.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
Not anymore. Ish, question for you. What's the fastest delivery
you've ever bowled?
Speaker 4 (03:32):
Oh, the fastest, like, spin delivery or if I was
genuinely trying.
Speaker 5 (03:35):
To bowl fast?
Speaker 1 (03:36):
No, if you're genuinely trying to bowl pace, like, what
do you reckon would be your top speed?
Speaker 4 (03:40):
I reckon my heaviest nut would be 121 kilometres an hour.
Speaker 5 (03:43):
121?
Speaker 4 (03:44):
Yeah, it's not going to do much damage to that, though,
is it?
Speaker 5 (03:47):
Well, I mean, a.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
Heavy ball, a heavy 121 is different than sort of
an along-the-wicket 121. You've got that extra bounce, perhaps.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
It was pretty along it. I'd say I've bowled some
heavier leggies in my life than my 121.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
And one more question for you. Are you going to
be bowling with your glasses on this year?
Speaker 4 (04:04):
Even at night, yeah, probably. No, I'm pretty excited to
get them out. I've got a fresh new pair, so
hopefully I can put them to good use this year.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
Hey, Sody, thanks so much for your time. Always great
to chat, and good luck with the season.
Speaker 5 (04:19):
Cheers, guys. Thank you.
