Speaker 1 (00:00):
Daily bespoke content that you won't find on the radio
show The hurdar Key Breakfast Podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
So much coming up with the podcast today Paul Williams
New Zealand Spy, which is something that he's written. I
think he stars on a too, premiers Wednesday, the twenty
ninth of April. He's going to come in to chat
about that. Also, the deepest of deep teas is coming
up for this week's foot Job Friday because I spent
the weekend with the well, spent plenty of time in
(00:26):
the weekend with the person who was involved in the
and the foot.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Probably shouldn't say that should it probably gives.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
A wright and that doesn't matter n And I went
deep with him just to re clarify a few of
the clarify a few of the stories and a few
of the details around the story.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
With the sock Now, do we want to a sock
job because we left a couple of questions unanswered at
that time. Do we want to answer them now or
do we want to do that on Friday?
Speaker 2 (00:52):
No, I think it's the deep teas. Okay, I think
the deep I think let's keep foot Job Friday on
Friday to foot Job Friday.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
Okay, so we're running foot job Friday back. I think
so great. I think so okay, foot.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
Job Friday too.
Speaker 5 (01:06):
So because you had two foot job stories, yep, did
you get an update on the second foot job?
Speaker 2 (01:11):
No, he's not come back to me, which makes me
think I haven't seen him for some months slash maybe
a year or two, so I think that he has
maybe changed his number. So I'm not sure about that one.
I'm not sure that come back. This is the sock story.
This is the guy who had six with the hole
in the sock.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
You've heard back from the sock guy?
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Oh yeah, not the actual sock guy, the guy who
was wearing the sock.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
But the other one is retraumatized by his parents. I
haven't heard from haven't heard from him. Is that the
one you wanted to hear from?
Speaker 5 (01:44):
No, I've got maxed that one I wanted to hear from.
There was the one that went and the hole in
the sock, and then there was Midnight. Were you the
one that told.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
The story about the glade rap the socks.
Speaker 4 (01:53):
On the note? Yeah? Okay, okay, no update on that one?
Speaker 3 (01:56):
There were that was? That was a closed loop?
Speaker 5 (02:00):
What do you want to know anything else about the story.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
Well, with the sock job, I mean, because it was
it a foot job or was it a sock job?
That's the questions.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
And you're going to job that's a foot job. If
the socks on the foot, it's a foot job.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
If the socks on the foot wear it.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
That's what they said, that's what And you've always said
there and you're a big proponent of the socks on
the foot of the job. I just see here in
the rundown hitting Tulsi yuse or no, there was something
you wanted to discuss on the podcast. It was just
something come up in the in between songs and you
were like, and what and what she's got a thing
(02:37):
going on?
Speaker 2 (02:38):
And is it okay?
Speaker 3 (02:40):
When is it okay?
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Yeah? Podcast chat Ruder pitching two new radio games.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
You don't you just want to skim past the hang.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
Well, I didn't know who wrote that in there? Who
was that?
Speaker 4 (02:50):
I didn't write it.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
It's a pretty definite silence.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
Er, Well, can we go back, and I'd like to
go back and have a look at the doc data
please and find out when that was written.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
I wrote it in there? Ah, Okay, I'm willing to
admit that, okay, but it was off the back of
something you were talking about during salt.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Yeah, well I can't even mean what that was now.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
No, it was a it was a jury a jury duty.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Ah, that's right. Okay.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
So if you're in a situation where you're on jury
duty and you've turned it down a number of times,
do you and you've got a funeral to go to? Yes?
Does going to a funeral because you've booked and generally
for a week with jury duty?
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Does a funeral over a jury duty service situation? Depending
on whose it is.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
Let's start with there's a couple of things to clarify. First,
I would say what is her stance on jury judy?
Because this goes one of two ways. You either go
I never want to do it. I can't be asked
on jury duty. Any excuse to get out, in which case,
obviously you'd say there's been a death in the family.
Or is she one of these people like me who
has always wanted to do jury judy. I've always wanted
(04:01):
to be on a jury not just because it's my
civic duty, but also because great gossip. Ye, always a
good story, always a good street. On a jury myself.
Very interesting. Yeah, yeah, yeah, mine was careful. Well, I
think I can I can talk.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
About it, okay.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
I think once it's over, you can talk about it. Okay,
So paper out Dunedin.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
No, it was theft as a servant. Oh, theft is
a servant. So someone that stole from their workplace.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
And they worked as a servant.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Well, they worked as a caretaker. No, but they're not not.
But it's called theft. It's an old it's an old
term time, but it's theft. Theft as a as an employee?
Speaker 3 (04:39):
Are you allowed to request trial by combat?
Speaker 2 (04:41):
And my situation with this person was a caretaker at
a school and a whole lot of money went missing
out of a safe and the question was did the
caretaker steal it?
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Awesome?
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Or did the caretaker not steal it?
Speaker 3 (04:56):
That's awesome, that's great, Yeah, that is great.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
It was. It was a good one and I learned
a lot about people put it that way, and the
and the week that I was on this particular jury,
and particularly around how some people take their own prejudices
into a jury room. Oh really, Well, there was one
guy who just hated the cops. I think I don't
(05:20):
know what had happened to him, but he had some
run ins with the cops or something that happened, and
so essentially the police, he was questioning all of the
police's evidence, like just because he all of that straight
off the ripe. Yeah, and there was no question of
the evidence. It was. It was clear that it was.
It was filmed, like there was here is yeah, here's
the guy the camera and he was like, well, how
(05:42):
can we trust that security camera footage. It's like.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
We have to ground something here to start off with.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
Yeah, so he was he basically for him, it was
a trial of the police, the police, which is and
the and their history in New Zealand over the last
thirty years.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
While the defense would have wanted him on the jury.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Yeah, but let's just say by the end of it,
there was and there were a couple of people who
were new to New Zealand, okay, two people, and they
didn't seem to know exactly what was going on a
lot of the time, so they just go with whoever
whatever the rest of the people were doing.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
Trying not to get sent back to where they came from,
so that it was kind of down and went with
what everyone else wanted. Yeap and by the end of it,
there were some people who are making who are going
to make it very very difficult to get a unanimous folk.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Will pitially going to have to stay hanging there. So
there were some compromises that were reached inside of the
jury room. It's just say that.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
But in the end he was there were two counts
and he was found guilty in one count and not
another count.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
He was shocked. He couldn't believe it. I could see
his facement. It's like, blah, blah blah, what is the discount?
Not guilty?
Speaker 4 (06:44):
And he was like what I was shocked at.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
I'm not guilty.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
That was the one I did do.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
I'm not guilty.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Wow, even though and the lawyer was like, wow, you guys,
what happened then.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Happened in there?
Speaker 3 (07:01):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (07:01):
Have you ever been on jury judy oh Man.
Speaker 5 (07:04):
I got asked to do during duty once a couple
of years ago, around the time that you were auditioning
would that be the right word to be on this
breakfast show?
Speaker 4 (07:16):
And it was put across me.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
I was attempting not to end up I've failed.
Speaker 5 (07:21):
Yeah, And I don't know. I know this sounds silly,
but at the time I was like, oh, it's probably
not a good time for me to go and.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
Do during judy.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
No, absolutely it wasn't.
Speaker 5 (07:31):
And so I got a letter that said it was
important for me to be at work, and.
Speaker 4 (07:35):
I regret it. I regret it would have been on.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
It's interesting, it's a very interesting to be part of
the process. What you do realize is that as a
jury member, if you can't work out whether someone's guilty
or not, there's something wrong. But you know, by the
time you get to five days, you've seen the person,
You've seen how they've acted. Yeah, you've heard all the evidence.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
Can you prove it? Is it? Basically?
Speaker 2 (07:57):
Well, you get I just think you definitely I reckon.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
You know, yeah, I think that's about so many cases,
as like the cops know, but can they get enough
evidence to convict? Those are two different things, aren't they.
But you would know straight off the rep he'd be like, yeah,
he or she, thank you. I never I got requested
for jury duty one time and I went down there
(08:23):
and my Sunday best I had taken the week off
work and was pretty stoked about that. And then I
got there in the morning and the guy goes, what
are you here for? And I was like, jury, judy,
fuck off, I'm not on trial. Yeah, and then he goes, oh, yeah,
what's the case number? And I gave it to him
and he goes, oh, that guy pleaded guilty last night.
Oh there's no there'll be no jury. And I was like,
(08:46):
so I go back, you go back in the ballot
in that situation, then yeah, I think you do. I've
never been drawn back out again, but uh. And so
then I then I was like, what are we going
to do because I'm not getting paid because I've taken
the day off work?
Speaker 6 (08:58):
Wrong?
Speaker 2 (08:58):
My boss?
Speaker 3 (08:59):
Who come pick me up? Okay, We'll got houses to
plaster to. Tolsey's up for This is the third time
and she's been the last time. She wants to do it.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
She wants to do it. She's super interested.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
Now, what is the relation to the person who has
passed away?
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Sister's husband's mother.
Speaker 3 (09:16):
Sisters husbands?
Speaker 4 (09:17):
Oh, okay, Lane claim fame.
Speaker 3 (09:20):
I think, like this is why I asked a question
ten minutes ago, was because it depends whether you want
to do it or not, because it's tenuous enough that
you could be like, well, I don't want to go
do it. But like I always say, funerals are for
the living and it's about supporting her sister. Yeah, so
I think she should go.
Speaker 5 (09:37):
My wife have just remembered my wife did. Jerry Judy
didn't want to do it. But you know how some
people are like, oh, you just say you know someone
in the media or something, and then they'll oh yeah,
And so she tried to get out of it and
they were like, nah, sorry, you've got to do it.
Speaker 4 (09:54):
Ended up being an.
Speaker 3 (09:55):
Old guy.
Speaker 5 (09:57):
That defrauded a company that he worked and she said
it was the most harrowing thing because he just looked
confused through the whole thing. And her main thing that
will always upset her as seeing an old man cry.
And she said she just saw an old man cry
for two weeks and then was found guilty and cry
some more.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
Did he play her like a fiddle?
Speaker 2 (10:19):
Perhap?
Speaker 5 (10:20):
Maybe maybe that's exactly what's happened there, But yeah, she
just said it was an awful experience and she would
never want to do it again.
Speaker 4 (10:26):
There's a person on the other side of it.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
There's a person that we work with who when you
get enough drinks into her, she'll tell you about She
sat on a harrowing jury juty and it was something
along the lines of a guy had claimed to be stabbed,
to have been stabbed and was found to have stabbed himself.
Speaker 4 (10:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:47):
Crazy, Well that's why it's interesting. Crazy, I know, that's
why it's quite interesting. I know. So, yeah, that's tricky one.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
I think if you've got if you don't have a
speaking role or supporting role at the funeral, it's going
to be a large It depends on the size a
large funeral. Lots of family members, lots of people every week.
You probably you probably Okay.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
I think this is a question for the sister. Yeah,
do you want me there?
Speaker 2 (11:13):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (11:13):
O come yep, but you yeah, If you don't want
me there, then noble.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
I think that's probably the way to do it.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
We're going to end all right, Sure we have under Paul.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Let's do that next.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
Jeremy Wells and Mania Stewart find them on Instagram at
Hodarki Breakfast. Jerry and Maniah joined the complicate the Hodaki
Breakfast discussion group on Facebook for more.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
Paul Williams joins us in the studio. Welcome Paul Williams.
Speaker 6 (11:40):
Thank you so much for having me.
Speaker 3 (11:42):
It's an absolute pleasure. Great to see you, Jeremy, so
nice to see you, Paul. Yeah, you guys work together
extensively on New Zealand task My serveny. Yes, do you
slag Jerry off behind us back as much as he
slags you? Are?
Speaker 6 (11:56):
Definitely not?
Speaker 2 (11:57):
No.
Speaker 6 (11:58):
Wait, should I be listening to this radio show more often?
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Well someone should be, But no, Jerry's just got very
unkind things to say that everybody works with.
Speaker 2 (12:06):
On this, don't you, dear say that? Just Manias are
saying that that's not true. Okay, you know that's not No, No, I.
Speaker 6 (12:14):
Know it's not true.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
You know it's not true.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Not only do we work together extensively, Mania, we work
together intensively. Oh really yeah, both in an ext you'll find.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
Yeah, I didn't. That's the that's the way the words.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
One intensive and extensive week, five days of intensity. That's
how that works. That's how you describe it.
Speaker 6 (12:36):
I'm very confused, but I'm just agreeing.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
Yeah, but we're not we're not here to talk about
Taskmaster because you have written directed, no and started no
not directed, produced, executive producer, editor, show runner, show runner,
show runner.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
Yeah, I know all about this because I was talking
to some about this in the weekend. What show runner
means you want the show runner credit?
Speaker 3 (13:04):
Maybe that that means that's very important, the show running
creatit I hear.
Speaker 6 (13:08):
Yeah, I'm kind of running shows now you run a
bit of show. Yeah, I'm running shows, So don't worry
about me. Don't worry about.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
Me, because for people who don't know show running everyone, Yeah,
show runner does not mean that you're the runner, like
you know, like you you get you're the gofer. You
go and get people's coffees and stuff. It's kind of
the opposite of a runner. I'm kind of demanding coffees
and I don't even drink coffee. I'm just doing it as.
Speaker 6 (13:32):
A power move and stepping it out. Oh yeah, chucking
it back at them. You literally run the show? Well
yeah that makes sense, yeah kind of.
Speaker 3 (13:43):
And then what's a director?
Speaker 2 (13:45):
They direct?
Speaker 6 (13:46):
They yeah, but you know, as show runner, I'm sort
of I'm running. I'm running the running the show.
Speaker 4 (13:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:52):
Yeah, yeah, the Magic Johnson, Yeah for sure, Showtimes.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
Yeah, would you say you're the Magic Johnson? That's an
interesting I'd.
Speaker 6 (14:00):
Say, yeah, or Michael maybe the Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan,
like yeah, like I mean, greatest is getting thrown around
a lot on set. Everyone's saying it.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
Okay, someone said calm alone. I mean someone thought more
than Colm Alone. No, no, no vibe.
Speaker 3 (14:16):
No you don't want that one?
Speaker 6 (14:16):
No, no, no is that? Do you know about the
cal alone?
Speaker 2 (14:20):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (14:21):
Okay, no, no, well I'm distancing myself calm alone. Yeah
that's fair enough.
Speaker 5 (14:28):
Yeah, could I raise your Dan Carter Rugby World Cap
twenty fifteen.
Speaker 4 (14:31):
He ran the show, Run the show, ran the show Man.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Yeah sure, and no allegations Chris Wiley sort of eighty
nine ninety for the All Blacks but before my time.
That's sort of that sort of vibe.
Speaker 6 (14:46):
As a kid, I would when I got a haircut,
I would ask for Andrew Mertens. So maybe in Andrew
Mrtens really Canterbury. I don't know what year, ninety ninety seven, yeah,
ninety seven, Now you asked for Andrew Murtens. But it
was it was actually post the bowl cut. It was
more where it was just sort.
Speaker 3 (15:06):
Of a very nonspect I don't really know how.
Speaker 6 (15:08):
It was just a short back in size. Yeah, but yeah,
as a kid, I was like, Mertens, please, it's the
haircut you're having.
Speaker 3 (15:13):
When you're not having a haircut. Yeah, it's with Clayton's haircut.
I once asked my mother for an Ali Williams and
she tried to give me the Ali Williams in the
kitchen with a pair of scissors, and I went around
saw my grandmother and the next day my grandmother burst
into tears when she saw my haircut.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
Wow, Williams kind of long? Is that a mullet?
Speaker 3 (15:31):
It was a bit mullody, yeah at the time, which
was a bit too progressive I think for my grandmother's taste.
So she promptly took me around to the caretaker's wife's
garage where she would cut all the kids here, and
whipped me back into a short back in sides into and.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
Caretaker's wife's garage.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
Mister Matheson's messes your garage. She cut your hair now.
She had two haircuts available to it. One was Hurtons,
one was the Murtons and other was a vicious bowl cut,
which I was sporting deep into my deep into my teens.
Really helped me back socially. Is anyone else who was
coming here in wamdi No, no, no.
Speaker 5 (16:11):
So that picture of you that has done the rounds
when you're eight years.
Speaker 4 (16:14):
Old with the vicious bowl cut. Yeah, I got the same.
Speaker 3 (16:17):
I could have been sixteen methis. And she gave it
to taker's cottage.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
Garage.
Speaker 3 (16:22):
Oh good garage. You go in there and you'd sit
there with a couple of pensions waiting to get that'll
be in foils and then you're getting a bowl cut.
Bulkouts why, I think were how do you pull your bit?
Speaker 6 (16:32):
Don't I don't disclose that?
Speaker 3 (16:34):
Okay, Well, I feel like you be a bit of
the bowl cut age. The bowl cut, I never had one,
really No. I actually started getting it maybe a few
years ago, but I didn't really intentionally get it. I
go to a Korean barber and just one time they
just gave me kind of an undercut and I liked it,
and then I just start asking for it. It's not
a bit shit. Yeah, I was very Korean as a child.
(16:58):
You've sent photos of me. I've seen that with the headphones.
Beautiful young Corean boy. Yeah, okay, I sort of lost it.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
I don't know what happened.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
I went to see Don't We Will Anyway? The show's
coming out, So we're talking about the show.
Speaker 6 (17:10):
The show is coming out, and Star started, Star started, Yes, Yeah,
the cast fantastic. Yeah, Ken Brett McKinsey, Brett McKinsey, that
follow from The Between Us, Joe Thomas from The In
between Us, Yes she's there.
Speaker 5 (17:25):
Andy Lee from Hamishon Now, Yes, the bullshit.
Speaker 6 (17:29):
Sam Campbell from Taskma Sam Campbell, Yes Campbell Yeah. Guy Williams, Yeah,
he's in it. He was a tough get not Peck
Society Pax. Isn't it like not that much to be honest? Yeah, yeah,
he's in one. He's in one.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
But yeah, well this is good news for me because
I often get confused for Peck Society. So really this
is just another credit. I'm going to check on my Yeah, my,
what do you call him? Cv I mb D, that's
what you call it.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (17:57):
The reason I did the show was like I was
like any thing for Jeremy and Pack Now.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
Shocking Chevron Roki, Jackie Van Beak.
Speaker 6 (18:07):
Yeah, I mean yeah, some of these people are playing
quite small roles.
Speaker 2 (18:11):
That's not even there.
Speaker 6 (18:13):
I know they're there. There's no small roles, only small actors, right.
Speaker 2 (18:16):
So New Zealand Spy, what's the premis Paul.
Speaker 3 (18:19):
Can I guess? Yeah? Spies yeap in New Zealand.
Speaker 6 (18:24):
Yeah, we're done. We're done. We're done here. That's it.
He's now that. No, not really, that's pretty much.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (18:30):
I play a you know, it's a show that dares
to ask the question, what if a spy was a
New Zealand spy?
Speaker 2 (18:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (18:38):
Okay, yeah, and I play a New Zealand spy.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
Was it at all inspired by that great spy story
in New Zealand where the guy accidentally left.
Speaker 6 (18:46):
The package lying around? Do you know about that story?
I actually did hear about that. Yeah, I've forgotten that, but.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
Some of the worst spying that's ever been in the
history of spies.
Speaker 6 (18:56):
Yeah, I mean I've forgotten that story, but yeah, I
do think that we played a part into it.
Speaker 2 (19:01):
What was the story? There was a guy that was
a spy and I think it was in the nineteen
sixties or even maybe seventies, but he left basically a
whole lot of really really important classified material just kind
of left it lying around somewhere in public I can't bench.
It was a park bench, and so a whole lot
of people just found it and just read through it,
(19:21):
and then it made the papers and then everybody knew
about it. The papers reported it, and.
Speaker 3 (19:27):
It was like really bad spying, terrible spinage.
Speaker 2 (19:31):
Yeah, shocking and made people not want to ever involve
New Zealanders ever again and in any sensitive information.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
No, I can't amagine because we don't take things seriously
and we generally don't give a shit as kwiz.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
