Speaker 2 (00:07):
Welcome along to the podcast.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
Thanks, good to be here. We, on this podcast, we've
launched a little bit of a, I don't know, would
you call it a quarterly rebrand? A quarterly rebrand? Refresh
or reset? Set some intentions for the downhill slide for
the back end of the year?

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Once every, certainly, I suppose once every quarter. It probably
is about once every, over the years, it's probably been
once every year.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Oh, at least once every year.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
You know?

Speaker 1 (00:41):
Hasn't it?

Speaker 2 (00:41):
I'd say so.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
That it's had a different name? So many different names. Yes,
but I think the positive in all of that is
there's been so many different iterations now at this point
that we can go back over them And pick and
choose any of the parts that we want to bring back.
You were here for all of them. I wasn't. So

(01:03):
we've asked the conclave to send through a bunch of
suggestions for the quarterly refresh. I'm just going to.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
So people can suggest some things and then I'm going
to be the sole decider?

Speaker 1 (01:17):
Well, I want to run them past you and see if...
Because some of these may trigger some deep... shame or
regret in you. And so I don't want to subject
you to that.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
So there's so much deep shame and regret going on
that I carry with me at all times.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
And I think a lot of these would have been
been for a reason as well. So we don't want
to be bringing these back if there's like a pretty, um,
valid reason. I just want to start with a, another
name suggestion. So we're taking the daily wounder for a
walk at the moment. Um, Mark Murray's message. And he said,
do we call the potty the prolapse? Because most of
the content really shouldn't be out there. Oh, um, Stephen Morris,

(01:53):
all-star contributor. Mine, please.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
Hello, Stephen.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
Hello, Stephen Morris. Mine, please. More stings like the old days.
Listener stings too, e.g. John from Gore asked against a
glass Harrison for the hibiscus coast.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
Okay, so back in the day, for people who are
listening who don't know, there were people that used to
call up the show and eventually they had nicknames. Some
of them came in with their own nicknames and some
of them we gave nicknames to. This is people that
are calling the live radio show.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
And then.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Who started making those things?

Speaker 2 (02:28):
Banger.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Former producer, Banger.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
R.I.P. Still alive, but R.I.P.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Poor old Banger would be working away, beavering away in
the background just the whole time. In the end, he,
so people would call up and we gave one person
their own sting because they called so much and then
everybody started asking for their own sting so then if
you were a caller who called up lots you got

(02:56):
gifted a sting and so people would call up and
go sting me and you'd see their name come up
on the caller sheet and then their sting would pre
was like Like be a pre-roll to what they're about
to say.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Also, we were on a mission at the time to
try and collect as many names in our system as
possible because the higher-ups were telling us that we needed
to have more callers on our show.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
And so we thought, well, we'll get more callers, all right.
So we used to get people to call up and
they would put their name in the basket. So we
had a basket that was like the Silence of the
Lambs that would wheel down and we'd have that creepy
song by Cues Lazarus playing, Goodbye Horses, or whatever it's called.
And people would put their names in the basket and then-

(03:54):
You'd lower it into the hole. And then we'd put
it into the system. We collected over a thousand names
from people. And then so whenever they called up, we'd
know exactly who it was. Then the system got changed.
The phone system got changed, and all of those numbers
got lost.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
Oh, no. That's like the burning of the bloody library
at Alexandria. Lost to the winds of history.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
All of it lost.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
I will say, that is about when I started listening
to the show. I loved the intro things, but I
know that a decision was made at an executive level
to pull you guys behind the curtain. A decision was
made at a... It may have even been at a
consultational level. Yeah, it was. Some consult was taken from outside.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
I remember the exact meeting. I remember where it was.

Speaker 1 (04:43):
And you guys were told that you sound like you've
only got four listeners because everybody that calls in has
their own thing.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
Yeah, there was a famous consultant who... Kyle Sandlins. Yep.
And he... He had a nickname as well, actually.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
Um, the boiled, the boiled, the boiled spud. The boiled spud.
And he, the boiled spud, the boiled spud said, I
don't get the nicknames thing. I don't get the callers thing.
We're like, well, there's people calling up and they've got
a stink. I don't, I don't get it. Why, why
would you, why would you get me? The other thing is,
he's like, why would you get people to put their

(05:25):
names in a, in a basket? He goes, it just
makes me feel weird when I listen to it. I
was like, that's the point.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
But, But what is radio if not theatre of the mind, Gerry?
Are we not here to make you feel? I think,
I think we bring the stings back.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
The stings. Oh, the other part about the stings. Okay,
so here's the thing. You've got to make the stings.
That's fine. But then the big part of that is
Banger used to be called Clear the Lines Wednesday. And
so Banger, so people used to call up and we
would hang up on them. Now, that really got the

(06:01):
boiled spud. He was like, the boys was like, this
whole call in on Wednesdays. And we're like, no, it's
called clear the lines Wednesdays. Why would you just get
people to call in if you're going to hang up
on them? Because that's stupid. Why would you call up
a radio station so people could hang up on you
and be asked to be hung up on? Like it

(06:22):
was some kind of sexual thing. Could you hang up
on me, please? Sure. And we just hang up on them.

Speaker 1 (06:27):
Did you hang up on them?

Speaker 2 (06:28):
And he goes, if I was just tuning into this
and I hadn't heard you before, I wouldn't know what
the hell was going on. We're like, well, okay, well, good.
You'd probably want to know, though. Yeah. Why are these
people getting hung up on?

Speaker 1 (06:43):
But wouldn't that also make it, in my mind, that
makes it way funnier because you're like, I don't really
know what's going on here, but there's a thing happening
where people are calling in and being hung up on.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
So you and I are those type of people who
listen to that and then we try and find out why?

Speaker 1 (06:55):
Yeah, and that makes it so much more interesting.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
To use a Josh Homme anecdote, As I want to do.
He never gives away what his guitar rig is, what
pedals he uses, what amps he uses. He tries to
keep that secret because he's like, half of the fun
is you trying to figure it out. You trying to figure,
if you like how his guitar sounds, a lot of
the fun is like, oh, I wonder if I twist
this knob, if I turn this dial, what's going on here?

(07:20):
And in your own mind, you come up with why
it's funny for you.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
I don't. I know. No, because so much of radio
is kept in obvious. Yeah. You know, it's like you've
got to be Captain Obvious, otherwise people don't... I hate
Captain Obvious.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
Same here. And I would like to think that our
radio show, certainly this podcast as well, is the last bastion,
the last safe harbour for pirates. If you do find
that stuff, Courtney, you can come and hang out with us.
We don't do that. And so to that end, I
reckon we bring those things back.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Okay, no, the bit I didn't say was, so Banger
used to... absolutely hate Clear the Lines Wednesday because he
used to have all these things. You've seen the Sting Bank, right? Yes.
People were calling up. They want a woman reading Pi.
They want- Turtle Sex. They want Turtle Sex. They want
Emanuel Rodge 2000. They wanted all these things. And so
then we limited it in the end to three. We said,

(08:19):
you can call up and you're allowed three because otherwise
it was getting out of control. People were calling up,
asking for all these stings.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
15 stings.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
And then we were hanging up on them. And it
was very strange radio. And we did it all morning.
We did it for three hours. Can you imagine doing
that for three hours now?

Speaker 1 (08:38):
We didn't do anything else.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
We didn't talk about anything topical. We didn't do any other.
I think we'd maybe do a competition here and there
or maybe a liner.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
If we had to. I can see why it's a
consultant's nightmare.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
They was like, what? So you do three hours of this?
I was like, it's our most popular show. People love it.
It's so weird. It was totally unique. But anyway.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
Bring it back or nah, Derek?

Speaker 2 (09:02):
I don't know. I don't know. You know me, Manoel.
I like to go forward. I know people look back
on it and they probably look back on it fondly, right? Yep.
But I always think there's got to be the next thing.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
Okay. Okay. We'll put a cross through that.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
So no. I don't think Clear the Lines Wednesday should
be back.

Speaker 1 (09:22):
What about Listener Stings? That, again, I think is something
we need to run past Ruda, who's crook at the moment,
because I would hate for us to sign Ruda up
for a bunch more work while he's away crook.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
Look, I'm not opposed to them, but I just think
it's a lot of work.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
Okay. Number two, the Platinum Series of Interviews.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
The Platinum Series of Interviews.

Speaker 1 (09:46):
Platinum Series of Interviews.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
Yeah, that's not a typo. They are meant to be
two series.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
My brain didn't even pick up those two words. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
The Platinum Series of Interviews, that's us talking to famous
New Zealanders.

Speaker 1 (09:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (10:00):
And yeah, well, I mean, I think there's nothing wrong
with that. If people are keen on bringing back the
Platinum Series of Interviews, absolutely.

Speaker 1 (10:07):
Okay, Get Fact Thursday podcast or similar.

Speaker 2 (10:09):
Okay, so that's where everybody in the podcast brings a fact.

Speaker 1 (10:13):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (10:13):
And then we judge whether they're good or bad facts.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
And then someone ends up winning at the end and
they get the fact factor?

Speaker 1 (10:22):
You want to bring that back tomorrow?

Speaker 2 (10:25):
I'm happy to bring that back.

Speaker 1 (10:25):
You want to bring that back?

Speaker 2 (10:26):
Bring in a fact, yeah.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
You got facts, Zoe?

Speaker 2 (10:28):
Yeah, man.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
All right. What about the facts? Get fact Thursday.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
Tell you what's changed facts, and that's AI. Because you
can just go on and you can really hone down.
You can just drill right down on a fact with
that and get some real good stuff. We used to
have a fact book before AI.

Speaker 1 (10:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
And there used to have to be this– We all
had a fact book.

Speaker 1 (10:48):
Well, we've now got a pack of ultra-thin Libra pads
that have facts on them.

Speaker 2 (10:53):
As he points at me.

Speaker 1 (10:55):
Oh, behind you. Sorry, Zoe. I didn't mean.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
Are they on the stand with my dad's wine collection
and the pigeon?

Speaker 1 (11:02):
They're actually on your dad's wine collection.

Speaker 2 (11:06):
Are they?

Speaker 1 (11:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (11:08):
Okay, okay.

Speaker 1 (11:09):
Get Fact Thursday tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
I reckon Get Fact Thursday. Do we make a no
AI rule on that?

Speaker 1 (11:13):
No. Like maybe it's a funny fact that you figured
out throughout your day, the day before, the week before or.

Speaker 2 (11:19):
Something like that? Well, I think it should be, I mean, look,
it's up to everyone else, but I think it just
should be an interesting fact.

Speaker 1 (11:28):
I think best fact wins.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
Best fact.

Speaker 1 (11:30):
But if it reeks of AI, you're just not going
to win the best fact.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
Okay, yeah, high stakes. Best fact, I reckon we changed
the voting system because what used to happen is people
used to try and curry favour with other people by
offering them all sorts of incentives. Like the notorious pants man,
Joel Harrison, was just so easily swayed by Heath and
his carrots that he used to dangle in front of him.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
Yeah, right.

Speaker 2 (11:52):
Dangle carrot they used to call him. So dangle carrot
used to dangle it in front of the pants man,
and he'd always end up swaying his vote towards Heath.
But I think we should actually write it down on
a piece of paper. It should be all handed in,
and then it should be- Anonymous ballot. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:08):
Anonymous ballot.

Speaker 2 (12:09):
Mania votes for.

Speaker 1 (12:10):
Oh, yeah.

Speaker 2 (12:10):
Jeremy votes for. Zoe votes for. Okay.

Speaker 1 (12:13):
Hmm. Rooter Bites Four. Yeah. Utilize Rooter's song parody ability more.
He's really got a talent in there.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
Oh, absolutely. That's up to Rooter, of course.

Speaker 1 (12:22):
That is a, yeah.

Speaker 2 (12:23):
And that's got to be.

Speaker 1 (12:24):
That's a workload issue.

Speaker 2 (12:25):
Yeah, totally. That's got to be. With Rooter, I think
I know what this feels like. You have to feel
something quite strongly and then you write a parody song.
Like it has to either annoy you or make you
laugh or make you happy. It's got to come from
deep within.

Speaker 1 (12:43):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
So that's up to Ruda.

Speaker 1 (12:45):
Stephen Morris also writes, Matt Heath on the pod, not
instead of anyone, in addition. I will say 100%. The
reason he hasn't is because he's doing his own. I
feel like there's a sentiment out there that he blinked
out of existence when he decided to leave the show.

Speaker 2 (13:04):
He still exists.

Speaker 1 (13:06):
He still does. The ACC. He's still upstairs doing News
Talk ZB on the afternoons.

Speaker 2 (13:10):
Yeah, so I don't know because he's often doing the
ACC during this time and or at the gym and or,
in fact, I can see him now, going into the
ACC studio. Or he's preparing for his own show. But look, totally,
if you ever want to come on, he is absolutely welcome.

Speaker 1 (13:26):
Just before we knock this thing on the head, how
about a secret hit of Steam Friday? I'm all in
on that.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
I bet you're all in.

Speaker 1 (13:33):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (13:34):
More than happy with the secret hitter scene Friday.

Speaker 1 (13:36):
All right, bring it back tomorrow then. Yep.
