Speaker 1 (00:00):
Dayly usper content that you won't find on the radio
show The Hurtaki Breakfast Podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
I'm on the radio show.
Speaker 3 (00:06):
Welcome along to the podcast Thursday, the twenty first of May,
Thirsty Thursday, twenty twenty six and thirty.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
What Thirsty twenty twenty six.
Speaker 3 (00:15):
This Thursday Thursday.
Speaker 4 (00:16):
I mean a coffee is not going to help me
blake coffee at five forty in the morning.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
No, that's going to do the opposite, perhaps make you
even more thirsty. Coffee one, I've got to say, is
my most enjoyable coffee, one hundred percent. That's, you know,
just before six o'clock. And then we're going to say
seven o'clock is my third least coffee, and eight o'clock
is my second favorite coffee.
Speaker 4 (00:40):
I'll often skip the eight do you No, that's not true.
I'll skip the niner. I'll skip a niner.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
I don't do a niner.
Speaker 4 (00:48):
No, I don't do a niner.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
I don't do a niner. By that stage, you've had three,
haven't you.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
And sometimes when we go for our show meeting at
the cafe, you're doing another one what ten thirty?
Speaker 3 (00:56):
I do a bucket of milk across the cafe. Oh,
I have some coffee in it. Yeah, I don't mind that. Yeah,
I've enjoyed the bucket of milk.
Speaker 4 (01:04):
Actually, it's been good that it's been unseasonably warm lately.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
I've noticed.
Speaker 4 (01:10):
And I noticed that yesterday when I was talking about
the dryer shrinking my undis and crushing my balls and
someone takes them, why don't you hang them out on
the light. And I was going to say, because I
live in Auckland and it rains all the time, And
then I was like, it'sn't rain about a fortnight.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Now did it rain yesterday or was it day before?
Speaker 3 (01:25):
No, I didn't rain yesterday or the day before.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Now it was yesterday when I was driving back out
towards my place, suddenly cloudy and then rain. Oh okay,
I think I've rained, not where I was, Yeah, well
rained where I was. Right.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
It's known as an isolated shower. Would you pack a
brolly for that? I mean I wouldn't. I wouldn't pack
the rain over that. We got to take a pickture.
Do you want to what's yeah, we've got to take it.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
So, So yesterday when me and I drew the exits
and O's on the old on the paper, thank you
on the paper about the basketball chat someone's actually asked
on the conclave the Facebook page then want the run?
Put the fucking picture up.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
I can't get that.
Speaker 4 (02:04):
One two one one press how their bitches run?
Speaker 3 (02:06):
So yeah, yeah, it is good. I've never thought about
a system like that before.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
Now was there There was a second one as well,
because that was that? Was that the full court or
the half court one? You got there?
Speaker 4 (02:18):
Man?
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Don't you want to? You don't want to?
Speaker 3 (02:23):
He took the half court home with him, okay. Put
in the frame probably.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Okay, So I'm just going to put that on the conclave.
You frame it if you want. No, I don't know
where it is.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
Maybe someone else took that.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Hey any blowback ruder from your WhatsApp scuffoo?
Speaker 2 (02:40):
No, none at all, SAIDs have laughed about it. Wife
finds it quite funny as well.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
We did that.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
I did that thing where I then messaged a couple
of other people in the group just being like oh ship,
oh ship man okay, and they had a good laugh
at me as well.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
So it got back to said said McDonald's parent. McDonald's
parents hasn't heard about it.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
You don't no, I don't think so. Some people are
again on the conclave the Facebook page have had a
good laugh at me.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
Well, one of them said, because I don't know if
you've heard that. Just before the news they play the
McDonald's you can text yummy and then you can win
a thing. And someone put into the conclave. Did you
stop to think, Rhuda, that they might have won this
perhaps from your show. Actually might be your fault that
that someone's having macus for breakfast.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Well, that's it.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
Rudy used to do a show pre this show here,
that's right, and you will all about the McDonald's.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
Wow, it's McCafe actually, which you can't get fries in
a shape at McCafe. You can get their beautiful coffees,
especially if you're a truck driver. Yeah, I think that
was the message you were putting across.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
What else did they have a McCafe muff muff muff, Okay,
no burgers or fries, not at mc caffe. Is that
a different place than if mckiffy is a different place.
I don't think it's called mckiffy. Let's not call it mckiffy.
I think they kiff him in something else They want
to sponsor us is definitely something else. So, m is
(04:07):
it a different shop all together? I mean, I've been
to a lot of McDonalds at my time, but I've
never been to a mckiffee.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
I've never been to a mckiffee. That's not also just
a straight up McDonald.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
No, it's the same thing, isn't it. They just call
it something different at a different time.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
The one near the supermarket that we both frequent and
they've got the normal counter and then they've.
Speaker 4 (04:27):
Got the mckiff but there's separately. There's never one where
you go in and it's just a mckiffy and there's
no burger counter.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
It used to be back in the day. I'm sure
there was.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
I must remembering him, you must remembering the mckiffie.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
So people say I work at a mckiffee. It's I
don't work at at a McDonald's. I work at a mckiffee.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
I think so they needed.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
Special, different outfit, a different outfit.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
Differently Inderson did differently had at separate Maybe they've come
together over the years.
Speaker 4 (05:04):
Right now over me, I don't. I mean, I always
look at the mckiffee and think who's who's coming in
here and sitting like as if it is actually a
kiff here, because they come in and they you know,
you're sitting there and it's like teenagers, wasted people people
(05:26):
of size, all order in their burgers. That beep is
going off, you know that booted. I presume that means
the deep fries done or something that's going and you go.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
I thought they didn't have fries at the mckiffee.
Speaker 4 (05:40):
But what I'm saying is there's always a McDonald's attached
to the mckiffe. So you're going to go, you know what,
I might go and take my laptop down and get
some work down to the mckiffe.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
Beautiful experience with an.
Speaker 4 (05:53):
Unhoused gentleman might come in and wash himself in the bathroom.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
Kif culture has come a long way in New Zealand,
isn't it, Because as a kid there were no kiffers. No, Well,
there were tea rooms, all right. I loved a tea room.
And you had the cabinets with the little purse specs
sliding window things that you that you'd lift, but they
(06:18):
lifted and then that you push them back to get
your sausage roll on you. Actually it was more of
the sandwiches, the white Death worth Worth Ham. They still exist.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
In an areas, I think the Lagonda tea rooms and
is still going. And the first the food all looks
like it was like not homemade, like it was made
at someone's house. Yeah, you know what I mean. It's
not get fair quality.
Speaker 3 (06:42):
Thin white death, thin white death, A very thin piece
of ham. No mustard, no mustard, no, no mustard. And
then different types of sandwich. Sometimes they'll put a moist
tea towel over the top of it just to keep it,
just to keep it moist.
Speaker 4 (06:59):
Because they made it yesterday, and the crust of that
and they go.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
And then there's the smell inside of a of a
tea room, which is a different sort of a smell,
yeah than a cafe.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
Oh, we had a beautiful tea room in why I
made the Savoy tea rooms. And it was funny because
you go and there was a kiffe out the front
and you could get great fudge in the kiff out
the front Wallaby pies. Actually that's where the side the
wallabies today.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
That's exciting. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
And then you would go through and there were the
tea rooms out the back where the oldies would go
and meet up and they would have their thing down
and it's like it was like going and it was
like going into the Victorian era. It was a time capsule,
but giant like brown wooden walls and then photos of
people's faces all around the top of them. I feel
like you're not a tea room unless you've had a
tear room. But also if there's a fan, ceiling fan
(07:46):
and a tear room, yeah, I would love that burned down.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
Actually, is it time for someone to open up a
tea room called the tea room and the Auckland Sea
beat Angel Auckland.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
Yeah, and it.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
Runs in an old sky old style tea room situation.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
An old timey te room.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Would that work or with people going Nah's to the
dak tea room.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
Kerry and Manaia joined the complay the Hidaki Breakfast discussion
group on Facebook. For more Jeremy Wells and the Naia
Stuart find them on Instagram at Hodaki Breakfast.
Speaker 4 (08:17):
Well, you're right, it's a cultural thing, isn't it, Because
you what's the occasion for a tear room? It's it's
an oldies thing, isn't it. It's an oldies game?
Speaker 2 (08:25):
What's the difference between a tea room and a lunch bar.
Speaker 4 (08:28):
A lunch bar is more where truckies might go into
a lunch Yeah, a lunch bar you'll find in Penrose.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
It's more industrial. And then a tea room is more
like somewhere that you find in the middle of town.
And I think you're right. MU has one on the
on the main street there on the left as you
as you're heading south.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
The Lagonda tea rooms. Yes, so the buses depart from
That's right, the buses apart from just across the road
from the bin In.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
It's one of the last tea rooms going.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
If you hit paper plus, you've gone too far.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
And two doesn't have a tea room anymore. No, it
used to, so I knowably does.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
But I can't all turned into yeah, they've all turned
into Robert Harris's yeah, or or Kina mckefez.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
There's a Gypsy tea room in Grayland, but that's a
bar and it's closing. The Gypsy tea room.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
Well, there were travelers coming through and just leaving their
rubbish lying around and stuff. Is that what its hats?
Speaker 4 (09:20):
There's a tea room and Tomoka, now that I think
about it, to your tea rooms. Amok, a tea room
I think it's called the teapot in or something. Again,
is where the busses stop. This is where tea rooms.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
The teapot I mean, call it the Tomoka tear rooms. Yeah,
just call it what it does. Just call it what
it is. Name name that sucker. What it does is
because I think if you are going to run a
teo rooms, and you've got to run a really good barrista,
I mean everywhere you go.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
Now, you've got to have the coffee.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
They always did have coffee. Tea rooms always had coffee.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
You have to have tablecloths that look like netting, curtains, soils, doileys.
You need, you need the option of having high tea.
That needs to be an option at the tea room.
Speaker 3 (09:56):
Scones, it's different types of sandwich, sweet scones, a cake, Lamington's,
Oh pivement slice, old score slice.
Speaker 4 (10:08):
And every kind of tea you can imagine, except for
that herbal.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
Ship, the tea pot a pot. Are you having a
go at the herbal teas?
Speaker 4 (10:16):
No, but I'm just saying that that's not flying at.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
The turmeric tea. That's what I've had to drink This morning,
I've had nearly a liter of water and a turmeric tea.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
One of those fake wooden trays. Yeah, very important that
you stack up that you grab at the beginning, and
then you slide along and pull all the plates never
quite fit on. They never fit on. No, they will
have you'll have one that will be leaning off the
side always because you want to use the plate.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
I never used the tongues. Does anyone use the tongs?
I just grab it. I was like, why would you
use tongs when you're just putting it on your plate
and you're going to use it with your fingers?
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Performative for me?
Speaker 3 (10:58):
So you do it if other people are watching, I
do it.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
I same at like the bakery at a supermarket. Yeah. Yeah,
if there's no one looking, I'll just save scroll, grab
that scroll someone's there, especially if they're just hanging behind
me over because to be fair, completely uncoordinated. Hell im
I supposed to use fucking tongue for.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
A pie for example, and people getting using tongs to
get a piut of a pie warmost stupid. You'll destroy
that pie. You're you're squeeze it. It doesn't want to
be squeezed you never know how hard because they're foreign tongs.
They're not your tongues, and so it's like using someone
else's cricket bat. You just don't quite know where the
middle is. So with the tongue, you don't quite know
how hard you can squeeze them.
Speaker 4 (11:37):
Yeah, And also is there anything more embarrassing that my
bakery every now and then gets absolutely the one I own?
It gets absolutely rammed sometimes and you're in there fiddling around,
like trying to use the tongs, there's people bagging up
behind you, like fuck these things. Put them down.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
It's a great yank d thing.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
Get out.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
Put it on there, Put it on your bag, Check
it on a bag, put it on a plate.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Yep, round baby bag. My parents owned a lunch bar
in the mid eighties and Cambridge. It was called the
Pantry Lunch Bar. Nice Mama, ruder mama. If she'd come
on this show man, we'd hear some.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
Was she durrying up behind the counter? Ah?
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Yeah, she would have been. She was in the kitchen
and my dad was behind the counter. They were convinced
that it would make them their fame and fortune didn't.
Dad went back to the bank after a year of
losing money hand over fist.
Speaker 4 (12:23):
Oh yeah, passion project, isn't it?
Speaker 3 (12:26):
Because I find Mama Ruder's butts and the food. There
was a button cellar.
Speaker 4 (12:32):
I just drawn on the tables.
Speaker 3 (12:34):
I just she was drawing.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
Pictures of butts and making people kiss them with influence.
But movie now.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
I told that story to Tolsi last night, about about
Mama Rudy because I was telling the WhatsApp story. Ah,
and she really enjoyed. She really enjoyed the WhatsApp story.
And then I said and then I said, I told
you about Mama Ruder and the kissing of the woman's
down stack and she said sorry, And I ran it
(13:03):
through the story and the quizzical look on her face
as I was She said, so what picture was it?
I said, it was a woman.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
It's pretty good.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
She said, what purpose did that serve? I'm like, you'll
have to ask Mama Ruda to traumatize one day. We've
got to call Mama Ruda up and get her to
explain what happened. Please explain.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
She doesn't go on the phone. What she won't go
on the phone.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
Because they're listening. Who listener? Well, that's the whole point.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
They are listening. Then she's said to me things like
have you have you never noticed before that you know,
you talk about something and then suddenly on your phone
it's being advertised. Have you ever noticed that they're listening?
Speaker 3 (13:51):
Yeah? But why wouldn't she talk about something that happened
ages ago? What would they we're telling the story now she.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
Won't go on the Phone's there's a couple of things.
One doesn't trust technology. Number two really likes to formulate
answers on a written format before she sends them off.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
Ah, it's a bit like you really isn't draft apple
doesn't fall far from the tree. No, No, does she
go back and revise, like when she's written questions for
like that's academic? Does she go back? And then if
there's a spelling mistake it's been read out, well she
can go back and fix it.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
Can I say? I'm working on that. That's been a
real work on twenty six And I don't know if
you've noticed me shaking every now and again looking at
the mistakes I've made and not changed them.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
Obviously it's very rare that there's a mistake. Let's be fair.
Speaker 2 (14:45):
But I don't think that is fair. I think there's
plenty of mistakes. Maybe you're not spotting the ones I've
been changing.
Speaker 3 (14:50):
Not a lot of mistakes. Also, who bloody.
Speaker 4 (14:52):
But I will say that, yeah, I have noticed you
haven't done that in a long time, but for a
long time. Listens to the show, they'll know that after
Jerry had but it was particularly during Mastermind because there
was time pressure, Jerry's fucking all the questions up. There
was a finger pointing, it was tearing families apart. And
then after Jerry'd stumble over a word because you know
(15:13):
it's either a copy and paste or Ruder's reworded it
but left half of a word still and there is
something and it's tripped Jerry up. We'd get through there
and after the segment, the next songs playing, sometimes Ruder
would be in there correcting the spelling mistakes and stuff.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
We're never going to read that again.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
That makes me sound Can I use the R word?
Speaker 3 (15:31):
No, there's knuckles on the ste We've got to go
because we've got to But I could talk about Mama
Rhoda till the cows come home.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
We've got to get her on the show at some stay.
We won't come fascinating character I can't get her on
the phone. I have to go visit her if I
want to talk to you.
Speaker 3 (15:44):
Okay. Can we get her up to walk plants?
Speaker 4 (15:46):
Get the show on the road, Nope, bring her up.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
No.
Speaker 1 (15:48):
Jerry and Maniah catch the radio show from six till
ten weekdays, The Hadarcky Breakfast
