Speaker 1 (00:12):
You're listening to the travel show. I'm Larry Gelwick's the
Getaway Guru. We got a wonderful show lined up for
you today. Something new at the airport with a new
field by TSA. What are your Christmas Traditions? Dan Honilly
joining us with an update on the Holy Land and
why it's a great time to be going there, Alaska

(00:34):
fun facts and what is a lightning pass? John Potter's
gonna help us with that one. Did you know that
a Utah Ski Hotel has been named the number one
best in the world as a ski hotel? And of
course the Utah Travel Expoke coming up next month in

(00:54):
Saint George and Salt Lake City, and a very special
guest from the Osmon family will be joining us today. Well,
I did get away today December sixth, and you know
tomorrow is a very memorable day. Pearl Harbor es Pearl Harbor,

(01:19):
and you know you can still go there and the
Arizona USS Arizona oil and gas is still seeping up
after all these years.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
Yeah, it's very humbling to still go there.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
Well. John Potter aka Goofy, not Mickey, He's Goofy or
is he sleepy? Thank you? John Potter, one of our
best travel advisors. He's in the Bountiful Office, is in
studio today in Salt Lake City. I am in Disneyland today.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
That is so wrong.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
I know what a role reverse, So that is anyway,
John is going to be guiding me through Disneyland today
and you'll be able to share. John. Twenty years ago,
the government TSA passed a new regulation that if you're

(02:20):
using a driver's license for your airport ID as you
go through TSA transportation safety it's got to be a
real ID. What is a real ID?

Speaker 2 (02:35):
Real ID has special features that have to be on it,
and you can tell it's a real ID by the
star on the top, hust a.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Gold star, gold star, a gold star anyway. That was
passed twenty years ago, but it has it has been
rolled over and over and over again by different presidential administrations. Well, finally,
the Transportation Security Administration TSA announced just this week on

(03:06):
Monday actually that they will refer all passengers who do
not present an acceptable form of ID. Now, if you
use a driver's license, it has to be the real
ID with the gold star. But there are about a
dozen acceptable forms of ID. So if you show up

(03:28):
without an acceptable form which includes a document, say a
passport or a real ID that is expired. Your document
must be current, must be valid, and you still want
to fly. You have an option to pay a forty
five dollars fee to use a modernized alternative identity verification system.

(03:53):
It's called TSA Confirm dot ID, and you establish your
identity at security checkpoints starting February first of next year,
so about a month month away or so.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
Now does that stay with you or do you have
to do that every time you fly?

Speaker 1 (04:12):
Ten days? Okay, the travelers, if you pay the forty
five bucks to use TSA Confirm dot ID for a
ten day travel period. Now remember this is for travel
in the United States. Yeah, this does not help you
going to Canada, Mexico, or any place outside of the USA.

(04:34):
TSA urges travelers who do not have a real ID
think gold Star, to schedule an appointment at their local
DMV to update their ID as soon as possible. You
know what's kind of fun, John is go online to
TSA dot gov and look at the acceptable forms of ID.

(04:58):
There's some interesting ones, such as a foreign government issued passports.
That makes sense. The DHS Department of Homeland Security, Trusted
Traveler cards like your card with your photo, Global Entry,
and a whole list of them right there. So get that.

(05:21):
You know, right now, ninety four percent of people in
the United States have a real ID, meaning the gold
Star driver's license. Okay, as you know, I every Monday
on KUTV Channel two, which is the CBS affiliate for

(05:42):
this area for Utah Southern Idaho, I am their travel
reporter and it's kind of an interesting story. I've been
doing it in about sixteen years as a true report.
It's not a commercial, it's a news report what's breaking
in the travel world. It started about sixteen years ago
and on the Monday noon news I would go in

(06:05):
and sit on the set live television with the anchors.
Now Ron is in a nice suit, Mary's has a
nice dress, and they're all dressed up except me.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
Yeah, I know.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
I didn't go bare chested, thank you goodness and flex
for them. But I would wear an a Lohas shirt,
the loudest Lohas shirt that I could find. It was branding.
I've actually had people as I would leave the studio
and I've got that a Lohash shirt on, they'd actually say, hey,
I recognize that shirt. I saw that on the new news. Well,

(06:41):
with the pandemic, they wanted to reduce foot traffic in
the studio. So they said, Larry, film the segment the
news report. Maybe your passport requirements changing, Princess Cruises has
a new sale, you know secure already, ideas have changed,

(07:01):
all these things. It's travel news, it's a travel report.
They said, we want to reduce the traffic, foot traffic
in the studio, so film it outside the studio and
just email it into it. So I did that all
through COVID. When the pandemic's over, they said, Okay, back
in the studio and I said, no, thank you. This

(07:21):
has been wonderful. I can be anywhere in the world
and film it and you do. Yeah. Two weeks ago
I was in Vietnam. Yeah, and I filmed it there
and sent it in. Well, this past Monday, December the first.
Can you believe it's December. No, I filmed one and

(07:42):
I talked to it was out on my back in
my backyard with the snow, and you know, the cold
and snow is here. It's but it's warm and sunny
in Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean, I talked about secret airfares.
These are unpublished, deeply discounted airfares that only a handful

(08:06):
of companies have. Morris Columbus Travel is the only one
of the few across the nation that has private contracts
with airlines for these deeply discounted the only one in
Utah that I'm aware of. So, John, what is a
secret airfare?

Speaker 2 (08:24):
The airlines will go to a company, a travel company,
and say, okay, we're going to give you some seats
at a discounted rate. They know how many seats deep
discounted rate. But you can't sell just airfare, you need
to combine it with a car, or a hotel or
something else. And so thus we have the tour operator fairs,

(08:44):
and in many many circumstances we can get air and car,
or air and hotel for less money than you would
pay if you just went to the airline and bought
the airfare.

Speaker 1 (08:54):
So why do airlines do this?

Speaker 2 (08:56):
They know how many seats are most likely not going
to sell well, And of course if there's empty seats
on a plane, they're losing money. They can't sell those
at another time. Once that door closes, they've lost their
revenue and so they're trying to fill their planes, and.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
They use historical data. And the key is you have
to bundle it with something a car rental, a hotel.
You don't even have to have the hotel or car
rental for the duration of a small period of time.
Many people in this area know the name Marion D. Hanks,
who is a general authority for the Church of Jesus

(09:31):
Christ of Latter day Saints, and he and his wife
had a home in Hannah, Maui. And when he became emeritus,
they would spend five months every winter and Marion D. Hanks,
Elder Hanks as I called him, his family called him Duff,

(09:54):
would call me and I would book a round trip
airfare and the minimum two day car rental which he
would never pick up. He had a car over there,
but he had to have some and that with a
two day car rental and they stayed five months. And
the airfare it was just as you said, John, it

(10:16):
was less than buying the air only from Delta, United
American or whoever. Yes, now, these I call them secret
airfares because if you call the airline reservation desk, they
don't know anything about it. Yes, and hence secret airfare.
The actual legal or real name is a tour operator.

(10:38):
Fair Morris Columbus Travel has their own tour operator fares.
I'm not aware of anybody else in Utah that has.
We come back. I'm going to tell you about some
Mexico all inclusive and Hawaii specials using the secret airfares.

(11:12):
Welcome back to the Travel show. I'm Larry Gelbertson. I'm
hanging out in Disneyland today, Yes, in Anaheim, California, and
John Potter is back in Salt Lake City and he'll
be guiding me through. John's gonna tell us later in
the show his suggestions for a one day visit, a
two day visit, or a three day visit. And is

(11:36):
Disney cruises which is pricey really worth it? I already
know your answer.

Speaker 2 (11:43):
I think most people do.

Speaker 1 (11:44):
Hey, if you'd like to talk to John direct, here
is his direct line eight oh one four eight three
fifty two fourteen. That's eight oh one four eight three
fifty two fourteen. So John, you actually researched these Hawaiian
Mexico And we should always remind our listeners that all promotions, discounts,

(12:06):
special fares are subject to change and availability at the
time of booking.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
That's correct.

Speaker 1 (12:12):
Did you know that with just airfares every day, just
in the United States, there are a quarter of a
million changes. It may be price, it may be terms
and conditions, advanced purchase, refundability every day, two hundred and
fifty thousand changes.

Speaker 2 (12:29):
That's true.

Speaker 1 (12:30):
Snooze and you lose. I love Honolulu. I really do
enjoy Waikiki.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
That's where I want to stay on that island.

Speaker 1 (12:39):
Yeah, you know, it's there's so much to I love
the mega five star results. Go out to Turtle Bay
on the north Shore.

Speaker 3 (12:47):
You know.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
I love the Hyatt there on Kawaii. Yes, but I
mean you're paying five six hundred dollars a night easy, Yeah,
plus the Evil Resort.

Speaker 2 (13:00):
And if you don't want to eat at the restaurants
at the hotels that are very expensive, you've got to
drive somewhere.

Speaker 1 (13:06):
You really Yeah, if you have a car, yeah, And
I say, yeah, can you afford? I love Waikiki Beach.
And by the way, I tell people, do you really
need a rental car when you're staying in Waikiki? If
you do, so be it. You'll be paying fifty to
sixty dollars a day for parking. What I recommend is

(13:27):
if you want to go out to the North Shore,
the PCC, polynes And Culture Center, Anama Bay, you know,
any of these places. Rent your car for the day,
pick it up in Waikiki, use it, return it that night.

Speaker 2 (13:42):
Yes.

Speaker 1 (13:43):
And if you have a red eye flight, if you're
departing that day, in your flight's leaving at you know
ten eleven or eight or whatever, pick up the car
in the morning, explore the island, drop it off at
the airport. Yes, and you can avoid that. Okay, how
about you found the Twin Finn. I don't like the name,

(14:04):
but it's a good hotel.

Speaker 2 (14:06):
It's a great hotel and a perfect location. I've stayed
at this hotel and love it, but I don't like.

Speaker 1 (14:12):
The name, the name Twin Fin. Anyway, I was you
looking at early February and again rates changed by departure date.
This is a four star first class one thousand and
seventy six per person. No, I should say in Hawaii
you have to add the evil resort fees. That's true,

(14:32):
and that can run thirty forty to fifty bucks a
day per room, not per person. And what do you
get for it? Maybe unlimited local calls.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
Yeah, a top So the pool.

Speaker 1 (14:43):
Yeah, I mean it's ridiculous.

Speaker 2 (14:45):
Yeah. And the Twin Fin is located right on calakew Avenue,
so it's a.

Speaker 1 (14:49):
Great is the main drag? Yes? But if you want
the five don't you love the Hilton Hawaiian Oh I
love that one. Yes, twelve thirty four. And this is airfare,
hotel and taxes. The resort fee sometimes called a destination fee,
has to be paid in person, yes, but not not
in Mexico. Everything included. Let's go to Mexico. Now. Are

(15:12):
you a Cancuner or Puerto Viarta or a cabo.

Speaker 2 (15:15):
I love both Cancun and Porto Viarta, but just one Cancun.

Speaker 1 (15:20):
Why.

Speaker 2 (15:21):
I love the ruins. I love the beaches is great.

Speaker 1 (15:25):
Are you talking about your social life the ruins the ruins?

Speaker 2 (15:29):
Yes, yes, yeah, I love the Mayan Ruins and love
to go visit them.

Speaker 1 (15:34):
Yeah. I love Cancun. Personally, I tend to avoid Cancun,
you know, like July August to about November because of
the seaweed problem.

Speaker 2 (15:44):
There is the hurricanes.

Speaker 1 (15:45):
Yeah, there is a It's called sargassum seaweed. It affects
the Dominican Republic the d r Can, Mexico, the Caribbean
where seaweed blow. It can pile up a couple of
feet on the beach and it's in the water. Now

(16:05):
most people use the pool, but I just don't. Can stink.
You can find some good rates. Yeah, that's true, and
the nice resorts have it removed. Yes, so you're going
to have a good time. Well, how about tell me
about the Sandos.

Speaker 2 (16:24):
Cara cole Oh, it is a beautiful property, four star.
They have a water park there, so if you're taking
your kids, and they call it a nature resort as well,
the Cara call nature resort and so they've got animals there,
like animals that you can visit.

Speaker 1 (16:39):
You're about the partiers or real animals both, thank you,
yep yep.

Speaker 2 (16:44):
And of course the water park.

Speaker 1 (16:46):
A thousand and eight bucks. So for about one thousand
dollars you can go without a Peso air hotel, all
your meals, all your drinks, non motorized activities. What does
that mean? Non motorized day that's pretty.

Speaker 2 (17:00):
Expretty self explanatory. If it's got a motor on it,
there's a charge. If there's not a motor on it,
it's free.

Speaker 1 (17:05):
I want a jet ski. Okay, I have to pay
for it. I want a little sailboat, a boogie board
that is free. That's all free, and your tips and
your gratuities and your round trip transfers airport to resort.
You want to go five star the dream Sapphire.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
Yeah, dream Sapphire Dreams is a great chain. Sapphire is
one of my most favorite. It is a five star
resort and it is only it's less than sixty dollars
difference between the four star and the five star.

Speaker 1 (17:35):
It's fifty two dollars different. Yeah, that is certainly worth
it to move up to and over the top. Five star. Yeah. Hey,
we got about a minute left. Let's move to my favorite,
Porto Ayarta. I love the Malikon that's about a one
mile a walk, yes, no cars, and it's shops, canteenas

(17:56):
dancing entertainment, the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe Zona, Romantica.
So very quickly for a four star first class crystal Porto.

Speaker 2 (18:06):
Barta, Yes, eleven thirty seven per person.

Speaker 1 (18:10):
I'm looking at early March, it's still winter here. And
the five star Grand Palladium.

Speaker 2 (18:15):
Eleven ninety eight, So again there's not much different in price.
Go for the five star.

Speaker 1 (18:21):
I love everything about Mexico, especially the food. The people
are so kind. Oh yes, so listen. When we come back,
Dan Hone is going to be taking us to the
Middle East with an update. Is it safe to go?
And why?

Speaker 3 (18:36):
Is now absolutely the time to go to the Holy
All that afore on today's Travel Shop.

Speaker 1 (19:02):
Welcome back to the Travel Show. I'm Larry Gelwicks, the
Getaway Guru, and yesterday I've gotten away to the happiest
place on Earth, Disneyland. John Potter is in back home
in Utah in studio and he's gonna turn my mic off.
Hit the right switch. John, You've been wanting to take

(19:23):
over the show for years.

Speaker 2 (19:24):
I have, and now's my chance.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
That's right. When did you first start joining me on
the radio?

Speaker 2 (19:30):
Oh good grief, It was before you went on your mission,
and then I filled in most of the time when
he was on your mission. Then ever since until I
made a bad choice and left and then came back.

Speaker 1 (19:41):
So then you repented.

Speaker 2 (19:42):
I repented and came back.

Speaker 1 (19:44):
Yeah, you know, speaking of the mission, I think our
listeners know that my wife and I had the unbelievable
pleasure of serving as mission leaders in the California Fresno Mission,
the only true mission around the world. But that was
twenty eleven. I became a man of the cloth, you know.
So my goodness, this has been like sixteen, seventeen, eighteen years. Well,

(20:10):
it's good to have you here. John. You know, I
want to welcome back to the show one of my
absolute best friends in life. Dan Hone. Dan, Welcome to
the Travel show.

Speaker 4 (20:24):
Larry.

Speaker 1 (20:27):
You know, same back to you. I was thinking of
something smart, Alec. But what I thought I can't say
on the radio, okay, but I'll tell you privately. It
was kind of a anyway. So let me tell you
about Dan now. But in the last segment, in between
the segments, John Potter and I were talking about you,

(20:51):
what an incredibly wonderful man, and your lovely wife Shirley,
your family. Dan is too humble to talk about himself.
Humility a character trait I've never been accused of. But
Dan was one of the founding members of the BYU
Jerusalem Center, the Center for Near Eastern Studies, lived in

(21:15):
Israel about ten years, got his graduate degree over there.
I can't remember. Dan is at thirteen or sixteen languages.
Answer the question. Answer the question.

Speaker 4 (21:28):
I've studied. I've studied that English is my fluency. Oh,
thank you very much about all right?

Speaker 1 (21:36):
Okay, anyway, most of them ancient languages that only Carlos
would understand because of his advanced years. So published author
lecturer does podcasts absolutely incredible. I think he's the smartest
guy I know on all things holy Land. So, first
of all, Dan, give us a general update and overview

(21:59):
of the Holy Land? Is it safe? And what is
BYU doing? The first? John Potter, why do I insert
what is BYU Jerusalem Center doing?

Speaker 2 (22:10):
That is our best gauge of visits safe to be there?
Do you Eyu's there, it's safe. If they're not there,
it's not safe.

Speaker 1 (22:17):
Do you know anyone more conservative than BYU? And I
say that as a compliment, Oh absolutely yes, Dan, take
it away. Give us an overview.

Speaker 4 (22:29):
Well, of course, as you mentioned BYU, they just start
completing another semester there that's been there since August, and
then they start the January program and even have the
spring summer program all planned out, has students signed up
or going well, and they just had a BYU alumni
that is Drews and Center alumni group returned back in November,

(22:53):
having a very successful tour. Instrol is promoting tourism right now.
It's pushing that very strong airlines are returning. It's a
great experience for everyone that's going right now because tourism
is just starting up. And the result is is we
don't have that tsunami of tourists like we had right

(23:15):
after COVID, and it's a place it's very pleasant to be.
I'm getting calls regularly from the people I know over
in Israel saying please bring your people back, and people
are coming now, so it's a great time to be there. Egypt, Jordan,
Israel are having good relationships right now. The terrorism has

(23:37):
been brought down immensely, and so the Abraham Accords are
being beginning to seek into other countries of the Middle East,
the Arab and the non Arab countries. You know, people
don't realize Iran is a non Arab country. It speaks
Arabic that farcees its main language, and it's into European

(24:01):
Arabs are those who have their natural language Arabic, whether
they're Muslim, Christian, whatever, the high and so forth. So
it's a great place to be right now. I'm getting
marvelous reports from people that are just coming back.

Speaker 1 (24:21):
You know, let me throw out a question that many
listens say. But Dan, I see on the television all
these problems in Gaza.

Speaker 4 (24:33):
Yeah, Gauza is you know, it's about the length of
Utah Lake for those that are in Utah, about twenty
five miles in length, and it's half the width of
Utah Lake. Utah Lake averages thirteen and a half miles
and the Gaza strip is about seven miles wide and

(24:53):
so forth. So it's not a huge area. It's not
any tourist areas that we go to right now. They
hope one day it will be. It was years ago
before the Hamas took over in the two thousands. I've
been there, stayed overnight there many times before all these
difficulties rows up. It's beautiful beaches, it's a beautiful place
to be. It could be a riviera if it were

(25:15):
fixed up.

Speaker 1 (25:16):
It's kind of like John, there's problems in Phoenix, so
let's not go to Salt Lake City.

Speaker 2 (25:23):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (25:24):
So well, Dan, how does a holy Land experience and
Worris Columbus travel does it different than anybody else that
I'm aware of? With such unique experiences with many many
good tour hosts, and your tour host will make it

(25:44):
or break it. How does it affect the visitor a
trip to the Holy Land?

Speaker 4 (25:50):
You know, you've probably heard it so many times. It's
not only life changing, but I might say it's spiritually awakening.
Live that want to study the scriptures. How many times,
Larry have you and I gone over there and heard
the people repeat afterwards, they got to reread the New Testament,
rego through the Old Testament. They want to jump into

(26:13):
the studies. And I've heard from them since that they've
just done that very thing. It provides visualizations and the
actually events that occurred in the scriptures. And I don't
know how to put it, but maybe say a renewal
of spirit.

Speaker 1 (26:28):
It really does. And as you mentioned, the most frequent
comment that we get is I can't wait to read
the Bible. I can't wait to read my other scriptures,
can't wait to read the four Gospels. Now I should
mention that Dan and I go back over fifty years,
and Dan will host.

Speaker 4 (26:50):
That's when I was in my diapers, and yeah.

Speaker 1 (26:53):
Yeah, yeah, that's right. And I'm the Easter bunn and.

Speaker 2 (26:58):
I have.

Speaker 1 (27:01):
Oh yes, those adult depends. Just kidding. Anyway, Dan hosts
Holy Land tours and by himself and some he and
I go together. Now my background, we have a very
different role. Dan is a lot of translation of history,

(27:22):
insights and commentary. How would you describe my role? Dan? Seriously?

Speaker 4 (27:28):
Well, you call them takeaways, and you know I record
them when I can because they're spiritually powerful. You share
personal experiences about things that apply very well in the
sites and locations. By the way, this isn't only for
Latter Day says, this is for all religious careers, right.
You know, I take a spring program this spring and

(27:50):
to Egypt and Jordan and so forth. We have about
twenty people now signed up, and they're among them are
Jewish couples, are Catholic and Protestant couples along with the
LS couples there, and yet they get such special insights.
That's true when we take the spring and fall programs.

(28:13):
I go to Intro with and we're even doing the
footsteps of the early Apostles in Turkey this year. So
these are exciting programs that we have going with Morris
Columbus Travel. But the other faculty that go with these
programs are fantastic. I know many of them personally. Some
of them I actually was a trainer for when I

(28:36):
was over in Intro for a few years after getting
my degree, in which I trained them in archaeology, history,
geography and the scriptures and where are the bathrooms? That
was the most important thing on each other side and locations.

Speaker 1 (28:50):
It's good, Dan, We've only got about three minutes and
lots to cover here. I'll mention some of the other
tour hosts, Garrett Dirk, Matt, Tim Taggart taking groups there forever.
The Ostler's Ka god for you know, Ka Godfrey?

Speaker 2 (29:06):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (29:06):
Joel Judd. Now don't you love Joel? Okay?

Speaker 4 (29:10):
Joel and I have a friendship love affair, so to speak.
He was one of the early faculty with the Jews
and Center, and again he was one I used to
take out weekly to help train and do things with.
He is fantastic. But that's two of all of them,
Ka Godfrey. Any one of the others. Craig Ostler years, yeah, Roger.

Speaker 1 (29:31):
And excuse me, I have Roger and Jeweler Manning and
court Scott and Marine Proctor. I'm gonna tell you a
story about Joel Judd, so you and I were taking
I should say my background, you know, my own service
as a mission president and bringing that. But in graduate school,
my studies included first century Christian literature, Copticket, which is

(29:54):
one of the Egyptian religions and languages, and Hebrew. So
I try to say, this is interesting historically, but how
does this affect us today? How does it help me
get through my life? My family? All of that. Quick
story about Joel Judd. He was leading a tour for

(30:15):
a different company on this one potato. This was probably
ten years ago, eight ten years ago, and we're up
at the BYU Jerusalem Center for Sunday services and you know,
out the gardens, the wine press and the olive garden,
all of that, you know exactly where I'm talking about
there on the grounds outside, and you were commenting, you

(30:39):
were talking, and I was standing at the back, and
Joel comes up. Who Joel is a fantastic tour host.
He walks up, He's leading his group right past us,
and I overhear him say to his group this is
a direct quote, Dan hone is the best Holy Land

(31:00):
tour guide in the world, quote unquote. How about that
as an endorsement? Hey, Listen, we got about one minute.
Tell me one or two locations that are your favorites.
They're all wonderful, but that just move you on a
Holy Land visit. And by the way, we have options

(31:20):
to Jordan and Egypt for that, Dan, I'm gonna have
to cut you off. What I'd like to do is,
can you hold over to the next segment. We're coming
up to a hard break and we'll just talk about
your tours and favorite place. Does that work for you?

(31:41):
Stay on the line when we come back more of
the Holy Land than we're headed to Alaska here on
the Travel Show. Welcome back to the Travel Show show.

(32:05):
Em I'm Larry Gelwicks, the Getaway gour and Yeah, I
got away to Disneyland and in the show, John's going
to be guiding me through Disneyland. John Potter, one of
our best travel advisors, is back in the great state
of Utah. Work you know, John? Do you know your
role in life?

Speaker 2 (32:23):
I do, thank you, which is what I work, so
you can play.

Speaker 1 (32:27):
Thank you very mal, Thank you very much. Listen. I
just want to welcome back Dan hone. We've been talking
about the Holy Land very briefly, Dan, tell me one
or two places. I mean, there are gazillion wonderful sites
in the Holy Land, and of course the Holy Land
is much more than Israel. You've got, you know, Jordan, Egypt, Syria.

(32:50):
A lot of these places have biblical references. But for you,
what's one or two that really move you?

Speaker 4 (32:57):
And why, Lara, you did ask this in advance, and
I really considered it seriously because after fifty three years
of going back and forth, I just you know, I
have such a love for all the country. But Galilee
is probably one of my special places. Why, because it's
so peaceful up there. I see why the Savior said

(33:18):
these are my own cities and why he did most
of his ministry out of that area, the scriptural understanding.
Just sitting contemplating, I love being on a boat with
you out on the sea of Galilee as you give
the story of Peter and walking on the water. Yeah, well,
Magd love how s that is? That's Billy's is great.

Speaker 1 (33:41):
Yeah, Kathy's favorite place is Magda. For me, again, everybody
loves the Garden Tomb of Resurrection. But outside of that,
the amount of the Beatitudes Saint Matthew Chapters five, six
and seven. Uh, I feel the sermon on the mat
inside me down to the mirror of my bones. Another

(34:03):
special one for me is the amount of transfiguration. Ten
things took place on that mount and we go to
the very top of it. Hey, Dan, I gotta say goodbye,
but I want to mention the tours that you were
taking in February of next year Egypt with a Nile
cruise focusing on Egypt, and then you've got a Holy Land.

(34:27):
This is just Dan in April and October. If you
go to Morriscolumbus dot com Morriscolumbus dot com and on
the homepage, scroll down. I think it's about the third
item down, says Morris Murdoch, Escorted Tours. Click on that
and then click on Holy Land. You can see all
the directors that we have, and every one of them

(34:49):
is wonderful. But you'll see Dan's there now.

Speaker 2 (34:53):
Larry, are you and Dan planning on doing another joint Israel?

Speaker 1 (34:56):
You're gonna get me into trouble.

Speaker 2 (34:59):
I'd love to. That's the best perk of this job.

Speaker 1 (35:02):
I know, because if I mentioned the answers, yes, But
if I mention that, I have to say, do not
call yet, because you travel advisors go crazy, start throwing
things at me when I mentioned a tour, that's that
if you don't know about, it's not even in the computer.

(35:24):
Yet you've asked the question, I'll give you the straight answer.
Dan and I are looking at an early April twenty
twenty seven. Now we don't have anything booked yet. We
have the dates we've requested, the dates. We're waiting for confirmation.
Dan will offer a late March Jordan visit and you

(35:46):
know on Petra and Jirash and all of these places,
and then there's Israel only, or you can do the
pre to Jordan. But Dan, I'm looking forward to going
back to Israel with you.

Speaker 4 (36:01):
You and I are excited.

Speaker 1 (36:03):
Such a great such a great team. So Dan, thank you, Toda,
and thank you very very much for joining us. And
I'm sure i'll have you back here on the travel show.
Salam Malan saying back at you, Okay, he said, more

(36:25):
Salami Moresalami.

Speaker 2 (36:26):
Yeah, I'm sure that's right, very very much.

Speaker 1 (36:29):
Hey, listen, now is the time to book Alaska for
twenty twenty six. A lot of the ships are almost full.
It's a short season. It's generally May to September with
just a few late aprils, maybe a few excuse a
few early octobers. Yeah, what why does Alaska capture.

Speaker 2 (36:51):
Us the beauty and the wildlife. I've been there over
ten times and it's never the same trip twice. It's
been different every time I've gone, and it's just overtaking
beauty and wildlife.

Speaker 1 (37:04):
It's sensory overload. It is. Now I do an annual
Alaska which is booked. I think you're planning one, and
we'll hear more about that here on the travel show.
Let me know when it's all confirmed, ready to go.
I have a group twenty twenty six. And what's nice
about our Morris Columbus travel groups, both with John and myself,

(37:25):
is we charter a boat for whale watch and we
go where we watch. We have our own private shore
excursions which do a lot more, no offense to the
cruise lines, but their tours are planned for the nearly dead.
They are no disrespect included on that.

Speaker 2 (37:43):
Ours include more and ours are usually less expensive.

Speaker 1 (37:47):
They generally are. And so we're on the Star Princess.
I love Princess cruises. They kind of like own Alaska
or the King of Alaska and the dates of July
twelve to nineteen. But people are telling me, Gee, Larry,
the prices this year are about three hundred plus dollars

(38:08):
more than they were last year, and the real price
is not But last year they didn't include the taxes.
This year the taxes are included, so the price starts
at just twelve nineteen, including three hundred and thirty dollars
of tax, meaning the cruise fair is eighty nine. Love

(38:29):
to have you join me July twelve, nineteen on Alaska.
We're headed to Disneyland when we come back. Welcome back

(38:52):
to our number two of the Travel Show, the best
two hours in radio. The Travel Show is sponsored by
Morris Columbus Travel Well, where you always travel more and pay.
Let's check out their website at Morriscolumbus dot com. That's

(39:14):
direct line. You don't have to go through the recorded
press one press two, So call that agent if you
have his or her direct line. If you don't have
a favorite one, we've got a toll free number eight
hundred triple nine forty six forty six. That's eight hundred
triple nine forty six forty six. If you'd like to

(39:38):
talk to Goofy, that's mister Potter. You can call him
on his direct line eight oh one four eight three
fifty two fourteen. Eight oh one four eight three fifty
two fourteen. Now is your email Jpotter? Yes? Jpotter at
Morriscolumbus dot com.

Speaker 2 (39:56):
Yes. And also that phone number that you mentioned will
take texts. Can text to that number.

Speaker 1 (40:02):
And say we love you John.

Speaker 2 (40:05):
Yes.

Speaker 1 (40:05):
Okay, when did you become the ultimate lover of all
things Disney? How old were you like one day old?

Speaker 5 (40:17):
No?

Speaker 2 (40:17):
I was. I was about twenty two. Actually I was
a late bloomer.

Speaker 1 (40:22):
What happened eighty four?

Speaker 2 (40:24):
I went to Disneyland for the second time in my life,
and I went with all adults, no children.

Speaker 1 (40:29):
And we were decided twenty two years old.

Speaker 2 (40:31):
Yeah, we decided that, you know, Disneyland is no place
for children, It's for adults, and we just believe that.

Speaker 1 (40:38):
Yes, yes, So would this remind you of Disney ibity ibity?
That's all folks, No, not at all. That's not Disney.

Speaker 2 (40:45):
Now, that's Warner Brothers Brothers.

Speaker 1 (40:47):
Okay, well, today I am in Disneyland. I'm here with
my daughter Jenny, who is probably the second smartest person
in the world on all things Disney. John really is
the ultimate Disney expert. Now I should say that all
of our advisors can help you with Disney and do
a job. But John, you are in a league of yourself,

(41:11):
of your own. You're in Utah today. I'm in Disneyland
main Street. I love Main Street.

Speaker 2 (41:18):
I did to.

Speaker 1 (41:18):
Disneyland, and Walt Disney's light is still on. Tell us
what that means.

Speaker 2 (41:23):
Yes, in the fire station on Main Street. As you walk,
you just walk in. On the left hand side there
is the fire station and above it is an apartment
and there's a lamp with a light on. That's Walt's
private apartment.

Speaker 1 (41:36):
He actually stayed there.

Speaker 2 (41:37):
He stayed there and when the light was on, that
meant he was in the park. Well he has now passed,
you know, several years ago. That light has been on
ever since because his spirit is in Disneyland.

Speaker 1 (41:48):
All right, now, I bragged you up. Let's see how
smart you are going to play? Stamp the dummy here? Okay,
all right, this is a Disney trivia cruise. I've only
once stumped you, and you just had a brain freeze
because you knew the answer. I'll ask you that question.
What does the word EPCOT, which is Florida, by the way,
what does the word epcot ep COT stand for? You

(42:11):
had a brain freeze? I had a brain I got you?

Speaker 2 (42:14):
Yes, Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (42:19):
You're disgusting. Okay. Who is the only dwarf not to
have a beard?

Speaker 2 (42:26):
Dopey?

Speaker 1 (42:27):
No, that's me. That's what you call me at the
office is dopey?

Speaker 2 (42:31):
And you don't have a beard either.

Speaker 1 (42:32):
No, No, you know I've got some pictures of me
with a beard. You know where I It's crazy. My
kids kept saying, Dad, keep it keeping. I'm not a
I want to clean shape. Okay. When Bambi encounters as
skunk for the first time, what does he call him?

Speaker 2 (42:52):
Flower?

Speaker 1 (42:53):
Oh? Goodness? All right, here is an easy one. What's
the name of the wood carver who made Pinocat? All right?
John four? Larry zero? Okay? What is a lightning pass?

Speaker 2 (43:08):
Lightning pass is basically a reservation to get a ride
at a certain time.

Speaker 1 (43:14):
It's in a time frame frame.

Speaker 2 (43:17):
It's usually an hour, so light between ten thirty and
eleven thirty, so.

Speaker 1 (43:20):
You could walk right, there's a line halfway to China
to get into that ride. But with lightning pass which
you have to pay for, yes, you can you walk in. Now,
maybe you just walk in or maybe you wait for
a period of time. Is it worth it?

Speaker 2 (43:36):
It depends on the pass. There's three different types of
lightning passes. The multi lane pass is only it's the
best one, and you can make three reservations and then
after use one of them, you can make another one,
so you have no more than three. Or if it's
a long time between every two hours, you can choose

(43:58):
another one. But again three is the maximum you can
do at a time, all right.

Speaker 1 (44:02):
Now, Other than John Potter and my daughter Jenny, who
stay for a month at Disneyland, that even be too
much for me.

Speaker 4 (44:12):
You know.

Speaker 1 (44:13):
Jenny's absolute dream is to stay at the California Wilderness.
What's the name of that fancy.

Speaker 2 (44:21):
Hotel, Oh, the Grand California.

Speaker 1 (44:23):
Grand Californian. I've stated the Grand Floridian in Florida too,
But I mean you're talking six seven hundred dollars a
night and you're at the park all day.

Speaker 2 (44:33):
Yeah, I've stayed at the Grand Californian. But it was
because of a pricing error that I took advantage of,
of course, and I got it for like one hundred
and fifty a night.

Speaker 1 (44:41):
I'm going to start looking for pricing air we use.
She used these stays at the Best Western stoveall Inn.
You know where that is. They do and it's a
maybe a ten minute walk. They have a wonderful breakfast included.
Now I want you to plan out most people will
visit Disneyland, including the California and sure for one, two

(45:01):
or three days. We're here for three days in the park.
I'm with Jenny and my two grandsons, Milo and Brooks. Right.
Jenny's husband was planning to come but ran into a
last minute issue at work. Had to bail out and
they said, Dad, you want to come. Sure? So I

(45:23):
just basically bought my airline ticket and with miles so
I didn't pay and we came on Thursday. We go
home on Monday. So what I want you is, very briefly,
I'm going to ask you to plan out the best
way to experience Disney life. If I have one day,
two days, or three days, but we have to be quick,

(45:44):
so I'm here well I'm really here for three but
let's say I'm here for one day. Plan out my day.

Speaker 2 (45:50):
I would just do the Disneyland park. I wouldn't mess
with California Adventure. You've got to start in Disneyland. That's
the most important thing. The best advice I can give
you is be there at the park opening time.

Speaker 1 (46:03):
Which means you have to get there. You have to
get that line. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (46:06):
Yeah, you're gonna think it's a lot of people because
there's a big, long line to get in, But once
you're in, it goes fast. You can get a lot
of stuff done in those two hours when everybody's sleeping
in and getting there late. And if you need to
go back and take a nap, you can do that
in the afternoon.

Speaker 1 (46:20):
This okay, John. Some of the rides have longer wait times.
So if I'm there and I get through the gate
at opening time, what rides do I want to go
to before the long long lines.

Speaker 2 (46:34):
I would go to some of the longer wait times,
with the exception of the Rise of the Resistance the
Star Wars Rise of the Resistance, because that's where everybody
goes first, and that is a long line. Because everybody
goes there first, so go to all the others, and
then about two hours later then you go to the
Smugglers Run or the non smugglers around. That's the wrong

(46:56):
Star Wars, the Rise of the Resistance, and it's going
to be a lot lesser weight.

Speaker 1 (47:00):
Now a lot of the rides depend on a personal
interest or the age of the children. But for say
teenagers and above, what are the most popular rides that
would have longer lines?

Speaker 2 (47:16):
The Two Star Wars rides, the Rise of Resistance, the
Millennium Falcons, Smugglers Run Space Mountain.

Speaker 1 (47:25):
What about Pirates Pirates of the Caribbean.

Speaker 2 (47:28):
It doesn't have as long as a line, but it
moves precured a lot of people through that one. It's
a fun ride, it really is. Of course, you've got
the Star Tours, any of the thrill rides, Big Thunder Mountain,
those are all great rights.

Speaker 1 (47:42):
All right, we got two minutes left. I suppose I
have a two day pass.

Speaker 2 (47:46):
Two day pass, then go to the other part, which
as California Adventure Park.

Speaker 1 (47:50):
Now there's no charge to go to Downtown Disneyland.

Speaker 2 (47:52):
No, you can go to Downtown disney You.

Speaker 1 (47:54):
Got me there for two days, John, what are we
going to do for this, do the uh, the same
thing at Disneyland, gets the same thing.

Speaker 2 (48:02):
Get there early. Everybody's going to head to the Radiator
Springs Racers first of all, California California Adventure. That's the
car's ride, so it can have a fun way. It
is the fun one. So go to any of the
other parks and excuse me, any of the other rides,
and then a couple hours later then go. One other
thing you can do is is it's not important that

(48:22):
you all ride the ride at the very same time.
Do the single rider lane. You'll be on different rides,
but you get through a lot quicker single rider. Most
of the rides will hold two.

Speaker 1 (48:32):
For six people, and you may be together.

Speaker 2 (48:35):
Yeah, and you'll have a family of five. There's an
extra seat, so instead of it going empty, they put
a single rider.

Speaker 1 (48:40):
Family of three or four, and there's going to be
two or three. Yes, we got about thirty seconds left.
We're here for three days. Guide me through it, Potter.

Speaker 5 (48:47):
Third day.

Speaker 2 (48:48):
Go back to your favorites, the ones that you enjoyed
the most. Don't waste your time. Are the ones that
aren't is appealing to you. Go for your favorite rides
and of course you're there during my favorite time of year, Christmas.
They've got a lot of fun Christmas activities. You have
got to do them, especially tonight tomorrow night candlelight percessional.

Speaker 1 (49:06):
Now we've got just a few seconds. Literally, is a
Disney cruise is more expensive than Princess or NCL? Is
it worth it? And why it is?

Speaker 2 (49:18):
You get it in the value. You get a lot
of things you don't on the other and cruiseillized including
all soda is included free of costs.

Speaker 1 (49:25):
What you're really buying is the experience. Disneyland is more
expensive than other parts when it's the Disney expensive. When
we come back, a Utah Ski hotel was just named
world's best ski hotel. Welcome back to the Disney we should.

Speaker 4 (49:56):
Call it that.

Speaker 2 (49:57):
Yes, I'll be there next weekend.

Speaker 1 (49:59):
And I'll be here so that you could travel. I'm
Larry Gelwicks to get Away Guru and welcome back to
the Travels kind of a special edition. I am in
Disneyland today with my daughter Jenny, and my grandson's Milo
and Brooks. They're all Disney files and John Potter's back
home in Utah carrying the show. And you're going to

(50:22):
be here in Disneyland next week, next weekend. Oh my gosh,
fun times. We may have to have you call in. Yeah,
are you going to be there on a Saturday, December thirteenth?
Will you plan on calling in? Sure? And that'll be
kind of fun. Are you a skier snowboarder? Yes?

Speaker 2 (50:38):
I love to ski. I don't snowboard. I love to ski,
though downhill or downhill. I'm too old to go across.

Speaker 1 (50:45):
I I've skied, you know, I hadn't skied in years.
As the last time I ski is probably, I don't know,
six seven years ago. I like my skeletal structure in
its present form. Anyway.

Speaker 2 (51:00):
I think you look good plaster to a tree, thank
you very much.

Speaker 1 (51:05):
But I kind of I was getting off the chair
lift and my ski caught and I tumbled down, much
to the delight of my children. Now my children ski
like Jenny, who's with me here in Disneyland day. She's
a snowboarder. She does flips. Terrifies me. You know, I

(51:25):
said you're going to be a quadriplegic. Anyway. I think
Kathy is across country skier. Anyway. I'm a ski watcher
now I watch people ski a Utah Ski Hotel was
just named for the second year in a row as

(51:46):
the number one best ski hotel in the world. Now.
This is by the World Ski Awards, which recognizes the
best in ski tourism around the globe. Votes are cast
online and by ski industry professionals such as senior executives,
travel buyers, tour operators, the media, and the public in

(52:08):
a range of categories including best resorts, hotels, chalais and
tour operators. You ready, I wish? Uh? You know, Denny,
we gotta have a Denny's our engineer. We've gotta have
a drum roll one of these days. Why don't you
get that ready for future shows? Because I should have
a drum roll. Stein Erickson Lodge and Deer Valley came

(52:30):
away with world's best ski Hotel, beating out hotels from
twenty three different countries on this the second year. This
is high end. I love the stein Erak Dodge. I
don't know if they still they used to have a
seafood buffet where I would get my money's worth, then

(52:51):
roll me out anyway. Congratulations to stein very well earned.
By the way, I have personally skied with Steinickcher. He's
passed away. But he and I have actually skied together
on all four or five occasions.

Speaker 2 (53:06):
I met him, but I've never skied with it.

Speaker 1 (53:08):
Wonderful man, wonderful man. He is, okay, John. Most people
when a flight is over just casually toss their airline
boarding pass away. Why is that a really bad idea?

Speaker 2 (53:22):
Well, it can have personal information on it that people
could possibly steal your miles. It's also comes in very
handy if you have an issue with your luggage, if
you have an issue getting the correct miles flight. Yes,
you've got it right there to referm and it works
really well, So do not throw it away.

Speaker 1 (53:41):
You know, it has a barcode on it, and that
bar code has personal information, financial, frequent flyer numbers. All
these things can have a passport attached to it. And
what you want to do when you want to dispose
of your boarding pass tear it up. I mean you
can shred it, but I just tear across the barcode

(54:02):
a couple of times and there's no way someone can
piece that back together.

Speaker 2 (54:07):
Yeah, and I don't throw mine away till I get home.
It goes in my garbage at home, and I do
the same thing. I rip it up.

Speaker 1 (54:14):
The other thing I do is I dispose of it
after the miles are posted to my account. And usually
if you have a partner airline, like when I flew
to Bangkok a couple of weeks ago, we went Salt
Lake to Seoul Incheon Airport on Delta and then what's

(54:37):
called a code share. A code share is two or
more airlines selling the same plane that only belongs to
one of them as if it were their own. So
we flew Delta mainline NonStop. Well that's a great flight,
and then sold to Bangkok on a Delta code share

(54:59):
with CA and it was operated by Korean Airlines but
has a Delta flight number attached to it. Usually with
partner airlines it will take one to two weeks before
the miles are posted. So save that boarding pass for
right now. You a hamburger? You cattle ranch? Did you're

(55:24):
a cowboy?

Speaker 2 (55:25):
We still own it?

Speaker 1 (55:26):
Yes? What's your favorite burger joint?

Speaker 5 (55:30):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (55:31):
Roy Burger Bar?

Speaker 1 (55:34):
Where is that?

Speaker 2 (55:34):
I'm not It's Roy Roy just south of Ogden and
it they have the best burgers and they also have
a Meat of the month. They have different meats that
you can get as well, and each month changes not roadkill,
but right, they'll have gator and buffalo and kangaroo and yeah.

Speaker 1 (55:50):
All right, let's go to more of a fast food.
First of all, I want to ask Denny, our crack producer.
You are a burger guy. What's your favorite burgers? Denny?

Speaker 6 (56:03):
I love richest burgers down in Salt Lake City. Why
they have the biggest burgers. I've had have Gian guerrilla
hands and they still struggle to fit in my hand.
So they're really good sized burgers and their tasty.

Speaker 1 (56:13):
When you go there, how many burgers do you order it?
Eat like three or four? You're a big guy.

Speaker 6 (56:18):
I can only I can only eat one. They're so big,
I can only eat one of them.

Speaker 1 (56:22):
All right now, John, on a more fast food level,
what's your favorite burger?

Speaker 2 (56:30):
In and out burger?

Speaker 1 (56:31):
Me too, I love I love in and out and
I love their fry. Some people don't fry are so good. Well,
it's kind of interesting. United Airlines just posted an image
of an airbus A three twenty, flying over an iconic
in and out restaurant at lax There on Supulvita Boulevard,

(56:52):
and you could walk to the airport from it. Yes,
so is it just a nice and they have a
classic car. Is it just a nice picture of a
classic car and the United Jet or could it be
a subtle hint of a new partnership. Well, there's a
lot of speculation United would partner with McDonald's, that they
were in discussions but it fell through. I am thinking

(57:15):
that United is going to start offering in and out
burgers in their front cabin. Delta is offering shit chat
burgners in the first class cabin more when we come back, folks.

(57:45):
That drives John crazy. That's Warner Brothers. I'm Larry Gelwicks
to get away Guru, and thank you for tuning into
the travel show. John. We are like three week less.
It's been three weeks away from Christmas.

Speaker 2 (58:02):
Oh, it just doesn't seem possible.

Speaker 1 (58:03):
Have you already bought my Christmas present? Yes, thank you
very much. Did you need like a big truck to
haul it in?

Speaker 2 (58:10):
No? No, just a little teeny bag.

Speaker 1 (58:13):
It's a hershy chocolate bar. Half.

Speaker 2 (58:16):
It's a kiss. It's a kiss. What do you mean
she's kiss?

Speaker 1 (58:19):
Oh you're getting me excited there for a minute.

Speaker 2 (58:22):
Yeah no, no, no, no.

Speaker 1 (58:23):
Okay, all right, hershey's kiss. I'll take The travel show
is sponsored by Morris Columbus Travel. You always travel more
pay less, and what I love about Morris Columbus Travel
is the expertise of the travel advisors. If you already
have a travel advisor at Morris Columbus Travel that you're

(58:44):
happy with, continue with him or her. You have their
direct line. If you don't have one and you'd like
to talk to Morris Columbus Travel toll free eight hundred
triple nine forty six forty six. That's eight hundred triple
nine forty six forty six. If you want to talk
to John Potter. John is in Utah today. I'm in

(59:06):
Disneyland today and in our last segment, John planned out
our three day trip, although we're already on day two,
so I'm gonna I like those suggestions. John's direct line
is eight oh one four eight three fifty two fourteen
eight oh one four eight three fifty two fourteen or
email at J Potter J P O T T er

(59:30):
at Morris Coolumbus dot com. And you can text on
the email and on that does the phone take text messages? Yes,
huh okay, so you can text on that. You can
text on that phone number eight oh one, four eight, three,
fifty two, fourteen. Now John, the biggest best original Utah

(59:52):
Travel Expo is what I think it's the twenty ninth year,
is it? I think it is, Yeah, twenty ninth next
month in January. Tell me about what is the expo
and where can I find it? In Saint George and
Salt Lake.

Speaker 2 (01:00:08):
The Expo is a large, very large gathering of all
travel professionals, airlines, hotel tour operators, cruise lines. Everybody is there.
You can talk to them, learn more. It's just a
great opportunity and people just come every year and absolutely
love it. January twenty first, which is a Wednesday, We're
going to be in Saint George at the Hilton Garden Inn.

(01:00:31):
And then on Friday and Saturday, January twenty third and
twenty fourth, we will be in Sandy at the Mountain
America Expo Center. And that is just the funnest time,
so much fun seminars that you can learn from.

Speaker 1 (01:00:47):
Talk to the.

Speaker 2 (01:00:48):
People with the actual cruise lines and learn which cruse
you want to go on, and then you can come
to your Morris Columbus travel agents and book it.

Speaker 1 (01:00:56):
You know what I so love about the travel Expo
now Saint George will have fifty to sixty travel vendors.
A travel vendor is an airline, cruise line, safari company,
tour company, a resort, hotel, anything associated with travel. But
the Salt Lake will have over one hundred. Last year

(01:01:17):
we had one hundred and seven travel vendors. Why the
difference in numbers the size we have a vice mats
sis matters.

Speaker 2 (01:01:26):
The Mountain Expo Convention Center has huge area that we
can do. The Saint George just doesn't have as big
of a space to have it in.

Speaker 1 (01:01:35):
That's all we can fit at the Garden in And
as you mentioned, what's so nice about the Utah Travel
Expo is people come actually with questions written out. You
can sit down with airline, with airline representatives, cruise lines,
the business development managers will be there from the various
cruise lines, with resorts, hotels, safari companies, ask questions, take

(01:01:59):
advantage of exclusive expo discounts. You can't get them anywhere else,
and like with some of the cruises, with the exclusive
cruise discounts will give you a lower price than if
you bought it directly from the cruise line.

Speaker 2 (01:02:15):
Yes, and quite often we can give you added amenities,
onboard credits, specialty dinners, different things that we can add
to it.

Speaker 1 (01:02:22):
I love it when you give me credit, because you
don't do that very much.

Speaker 2 (01:02:25):
No, I don't thank you very much.

Speaker 4 (01:02:27):
Jo.

Speaker 1 (01:02:27):
It's so wonderful. And did I mention free travel giveaways?
Every hour free travel awards will be given, including, as
we did last year, a couple of international airline tickets
courtesy of Delta Airlines, domestic tickets, resorts stays, Hawaii stays,
ree cruises, free cruises. Now, somebody is going to win these.

(01:02:51):
It may as well be you or me, because I
think maybe this year, John, I will simply draw the
winner's name. I will not show that for privacy purposes.

Speaker 2 (01:03:01):
Yeah, that's so good.

Speaker 1 (01:03:02):
Yes, I will read it.

Speaker 2 (01:03:04):
And I will lead the revolt.

Speaker 1 (01:03:06):
That's right.

Speaker 5 (01:03:07):
You know.

Speaker 1 (01:03:07):
One of my favorite people in the world is a
well known radio personality here in Utah, Abby Banel from
Jolly Old England. I love her accent, but what I
love even more is her personality.

Speaker 2 (01:03:19):
Oh, she is so fun.

Speaker 1 (01:03:20):
Now she will be hosting a tour back to the
motherland of England, Wales and Scotland in September.

Speaker 2 (01:03:29):
Yes, it's September ninth to the sixteenth of twenty twenty six,
so we're less than a year out and she just
does the best job. And who better to show you
England than somebody that grew up there. And I think
the highlight of her whole tour is her hometown of Odlum.

Speaker 1 (01:03:45):
It's a wee village. It's a wee.

Speaker 2 (01:03:47):
Village and they have this cute little pub there and
we have lunch there and the locals come out. Because
it's not on the travel tourism nobody goes there. Yeah,
And so to show you how remoted is, I was
on a cruise in Norway and our assistant server was
from England and I'd mentioned that I had a friend

(01:04:08):
that was from Oudlam and he says, my brother lives there.
How do you know about that little place? And it's
just everybody says that is their favorite part of the tour.

Speaker 1 (01:04:18):
Well. On the very first time that Abby took a
tour in the England Whales, she doesn't do it every year,
but she has done it several times. When the bus
pulled into Oddlam, they'd phoned ahead. You know, we're ten
minutes away and it is a wee village, the local citizens,

(01:04:38):
the local residents lined the road coming into Odlam and
they're each waving American flags. Think of v Day, you know,
think of the end. You see these pictures of the parades,
you know, and everybody waving flags. That's what happened in Audlam. Now.
I can't say they'll do it every year now. The

(01:05:00):
year they had American flags draped all over the city.

Speaker 2 (01:05:04):
Yeah, they love having their hometown girl come home. And
of course what a better guide to go with somebody
that speaks the language.

Speaker 1 (01:05:13):
They speak English or a form of it.

Speaker 2 (01:05:15):
They speak a form of it, they would probably say
we speak a form of it.

Speaker 1 (01:05:19):
That's right now.

Speaker 2 (01:05:19):
Those dates again, John September ninth to the nineteenth.

Speaker 1 (01:05:24):
Twenty twenty six, Abby Banel. You can go to Morriscolumbus
dot com. Scroll down on the homepage to Morris Murdoch
Escorted Tours and click on see if there's a toolbar
that has geographic destinations. Also a cruise a click on.
So if it's a cruise, you click on cruises, they
all come up. Otherwise you click on Africa, Asia, South Pacific,

(01:05:47):
holy Lands or Europe. Yeah, and if you click on
Europe there you get Abby's tour. Now I love river cruising.
Oh me too, Now I love ocean cruise too. For
my wife Kathy, it's no contest. Why do we love
river cruising so much? John?

Speaker 2 (01:06:08):
It's smaller. You're you know, one hundred and fifty people
I think is the maximum, but mostly ships don't even
hold that many. And you talk right in the heart
of the city, you know, or the village. The village.
You are not out on the open oceans. You don't
have the rough waters. You are on a river, and
so you don't get the waves that you do on

(01:06:29):
an ocean. And the food is just because they make
it local. I remember I did, right, They so local,
they source local. We did the Rhine cruise and they
had Strussel and I had never had strusl before and
it was so delicious.

Speaker 1 (01:06:44):
Well, and you can do things in these with these
European chefs. You can do things in the dining room
for one hundred and fifty people you simply cannot do
for five or six thousand people. True, And that's no
disrespect ocean cruises. I love ocean medias, but the river
cruise is something different. Now as the largest seller of

(01:07:09):
travel in the entire Inner Mountain West and all the
Inner Mountain West states. And it's not bragging if it's true.
Morris Columbus Travel does something different with river cruises. We
often will buy the ship. Sometimes we will buy the
whole ship or part of the ship, usually about half.

(01:07:31):
It's called a part charter. And when you chart it,
you know, you buy a pencil for a buck, You
buy a truckload of pencils, and you pay ten cents
at piece or something like that. But when you buy
the ship, the prices are so much lower. Let me
give you an example. One of my favorite river and

(01:07:54):
I love Alma Waterways, And you know there's many good
avalon Viking. They're wonderful. Alma Waterways, I think is in
kind of a league by its own. It's just a
wonderful cruise experience. But we bought We've got several for
example in November of next year. It's the riches of

(01:08:19):
the Makon. Now you know how much I love Southeast Asia.
Oh yes, I would live there if it work for
the kids and grandkids, the people, the culture, the food,
everything about it. We have the riches of the Mae Kong,
Cambodia and Vietnam. The actual cruise dates are November nine
to sixteen, twenty twenty six, and we'll start in c

(01:08:39):
n Reap. That's Anchor Watt, one of the UNESCO World
Heritage Sites, the most enlightened educated city from the twelfth
to the fourteenth century, and it has been a working
temple since the twelfth century, so it's never fallen into disrepair.
And we will sail on the Mighty Maykong. One of
my favorite stops is Tanchau in Vietnam. You think you've

(01:09:02):
stepped back in time. People with ox drawn carts, the
homemade silk making, the ratan furniture, every you are in
a place where tourists other than on the river simply
we'll never see. And we're sailing then from Anchor Wat
down to Saigon, and we're seeing that some cities like

(01:09:22):
PanAm Pen Saigon, but we're seeing the small villages will
work with the locals, the local Buddhist priests will give
us a special audience and blessing. But by buying half
the ship. Let me give you an example of what
you say. Now for this cruise November nine to sixty,

(01:09:43):
I think we only have about seven cabins left. Yeah,
it's a category. See now, I can't tell you if
all these categories are available, but if you were to
get it has a French balcony. If you bought it
directly from Almah Waterways, the retail price four and forty

(01:10:03):
six dollars and that's you know, all your short excursions
are included, beer, wine, soft drinks at lunch and dinner included. Yeah,
so forty one forty.

Speaker 2 (01:10:12):
Nine, which isn't a bad price for a that's about standard.

Speaker 1 (01:10:15):
Yeah. The Morris Columbus for the same one is twenty
nine ninety nine. That says twenty three hundred dollars per couple.
Uh Morriscolumbus dot com more when we come back. I'm

(01:10:42):
a little bit country, I'm a little bit rock and roll,
and you guys are wondering what I did with the
money my mother gave me for singing lessons.

Speaker 5 (01:10:53):
Larry, it's just controlled yelling. You can yell? Can you
control it? No?

Speaker 1 (01:10:58):
I can't. There's very few things in my life.

Speaker 5 (01:11:01):
I guess you're out of control, my friend.

Speaker 1 (01:11:03):
I'm Larry Gelwicks, the Getaway Guru, and welcome back to
the travel show today. I'm in Disneyland, John Potter knows
his role back in Utah today he works so that
I can travel, And I want to introduce you to seriously,
one of my favorite people in the entire world, a
colleague of mine over at KUTV Channel two on Fresh Living,

(01:11:27):
David Osmond.

Speaker 5 (01:11:28):
David, how are you, my friend? I'm doing You're the
happiest place on earth, and I feel like I'm living
always in the happiest thing I should or I'm just
genetically predisposed to smiling.

Speaker 1 (01:11:37):
Maybe you are a music professional. You've got some concerts
coming up we're going to talk about. But I want
you to give me an honest evaluation of my singing ability.
When I took that from the Donnie and Marie Show.

Speaker 5 (01:11:51):
Oh is that bad? How long is this radio program?

Speaker 1 (01:11:55):
Not long? In an hour?

Speaker 4 (01:11:57):
No?

Speaker 5 (01:11:57):
You know, anyone, like they say in any one can cook,
anyone can sing. Well. There are different levels of saying inabilities.
But as long as you love what you're doing. I mean,
there's so many great artists out there that don't have
amazing vocal capabilities to be the case in point, but
if you have a passion, mind it, and if you
sing from your heart, it doesn't make a difference. You

(01:12:19):
can feel. The music is what feelings sound like.

Speaker 1 (01:12:22):
And if you have a good band and backups, they
make a difference. Yes, it does.

Speaker 5 (01:12:26):
And if we're being tracks and you're Millie van Ellie,
you're gonna sound great.

Speaker 1 (01:12:29):
David Osmond of the Osmond family, can you share a
story briefly because we just have a few minutes of
how you got started in music and what inspired you
to become a recording artist.

Speaker 5 (01:12:42):
Thanks man. I appreciate well my dad, Alan Osmond, who's
part of the original original Brothers, and no one's old
enough to remember the Ozma's right, I do. They are
amazing and the legacy is phenomenal. But I was a kid.
I didn't know any difference. I didn't know was a
music business. I just saw my dad doing what he
loved and loving what he did, and I wanted to
be part of that. And my brothers. I have three
older brothers and four younger the oldest we were a

(01:13:04):
barbershop quartet just like my dad. He taught us the
same harmonies that he and his brother started out with
when Andy Williams discovered them at Walt Disney. We did
the same routines and then it kind of evolved into
a boy band tour with New Kids. I broke out
as a solo artist. I had opportunities when Android Webber
called up and said, will you take over for your
uncle Donnie in this show called Joseph in the Amazing Text.
So that was such a highlight as a kid.

Speaker 1 (01:13:28):
Joseph for about five years on with that company, traveling.

Speaker 5 (01:13:33):
Around Broadway American National tours, taking over that same company
for Donnie, which was huge shoes to fill and a
very small loincloth to fill.

Speaker 1 (01:13:41):
By the way, thank you. Yeah, but I'm avoiding some
great one liners.

Speaker 5 (01:13:47):
I can see your wheels turn it. But what an
opportunity as a kid, Osmond was a foot in the door.
Sometimes it's a kick in the teeth, but for the
most part as I don't know if you call it
nipple baby, but I did have opportunities. I know a
lot of other kids didn't. But I loved music, so
I've been singing since I was two years old. And
then as a solo artist, breaking up, being able to
do the Broadway stuff, those kind of musicals, and then

(01:14:08):
my own pop music, getting opportunities to go on American
Idol and being solo artists creating stuff. I've had some
awesome opportunities and I continue to do so. And now
my band is a big band. Caleb Chapman and I started.
I wanted to be Harry Connick junior Frank Sinatra, and
I was a kid. My first cassette wasn't the Osmonds,
by the way, it was Frank Sinatra. So the music
I do now is actually swinging big band music, fresh arrangements,

(01:14:31):
original music.

Speaker 1 (01:14:32):
Well, you, I know, perform all over the country. You've
been a performed on cruise ships and concert halls just
about everywhere. You've got some Christmas concerts and I know
you perform all over the country and internationally, but you
have some Christmas concerts here in Utah. What can we expect?

Speaker 5 (01:14:53):
Thanks, ma'am? Can we look forward to Christmas season? Is magical,
It's fantastic. This next week I get to go perform
as a special guest artist for Craig Jessup and he
has the American.

Speaker 1 (01:15:03):
Former director of the Tabernacle Choir, but he's up at.

Speaker 5 (01:15:06):
Logan, Utah State University, and he has the American Festival
Chorus and Orchestra, one hundred and sixty piece choir, sixty
piece orchestra, beautiful fresh arrangements at the Danes Center. We're
gonna have a Christmas concert for the ages. So four
concerts next week, uh, the eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth. Come
check it out. It's gonna be spectacular.

Speaker 1 (01:15:25):
What's the website?

Speaker 5 (01:15:27):
A f c O is where you go, but check
out Google, David Osmond and af c O and you'll
find it.

Speaker 1 (01:15:33):
It's if we go to David Osmond dot com. Everything
will be there.

Speaker 5 (01:15:37):
You'll find stuff David anything on social So let me h.

Speaker 1 (01:15:41):
You're gonna send me some clips of you singing some
Christmas songs that will play the rest of the month.
Tell me one of your favorite Christmas songs.

Speaker 5 (01:15:51):
I did a version of Oh come all You Faithful
for a good buddy mind.

Speaker 1 (01:15:54):
Well, sing us a bar of it, one line, oh.

Speaker 5 (01:15:59):
Come all faithful, joyful trial, and then it grows and
it goes into huge ranges and big huge.

Speaker 1 (01:16:12):
Have you ever considered going big time by including me
in a duet?

Speaker 5 (01:16:16):
No, not at all. There's chances if you come out
to these shows, maybe I'll pull you up on stage.
After the week, We're gonna change it up. I'm gonna
be with Daryl Yeager Odyssey Dance Theater. We're gonna do spectacular, spectacular.

Speaker 1 (01:16:31):
I gotta ask you one important question. We have about
thirty seconds left. You said you did Joseph for five years.
You already talked about that scene in the loin Cloth.
I actually saw Donny Osmond do it in Chicago.

Speaker 5 (01:16:43):
He's amazing.

Speaker 1 (01:16:44):
But how are the abs today.

Speaker 5 (01:16:48):
I've probably been on too many cruise shifts that tell you.

Speaker 1 (01:16:50):
I'll tell you.

Speaker 5 (01:16:51):
I gotta hit the gym.

Speaker 1 (01:16:52):
I was living at the Riviera Apartments in the early seventies.
My family owned Student Yes, when the Osmond family bought
and we're sitting there and it was a warm day.
The door was open and Donnie, at age fourteen, walked
in and said hello to us.

Speaker 5 (01:17:07):
He's a gentleman, a scholar. Go see his show in Vegas.

Speaker 1 (01:17:11):
We're gonna do that next spring. That's Davidosmon dot com.
Davidosmon dot com, and thank you John Potter

Are You A Charlotte?

Are You A Charlotte?

In 1997, actress Kristin Davis’ life was forever changed when she took on the role of Charlotte York in Sex and the City. As we watched Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte navigate relationships in NYC, the show helped push once unacceptable conversation topics out of the shadows and altered the narrative around women and sex. We all saw ourselves in them as they searched for fulfillment in life, sex and friendships. Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today. "Are you a Charlotte?" is much more than just rewatching this beloved show, it brings the past and the present together as we talk with heart, humor and of course some optimism.
