Following yesterday's defensive battle here at NRG between Houston and Denver, the Broncos break away from the Texans with a walk-off field goal in the final seconds, concluding Sunday's final score 18-15. Looking good early on, but taking a drastic turn for the worse following C.J. Stroud's exit and undergoing concussion protocol, Davis Mills takes over, still unable to push the Texans over to a victory. Standing 3-5 now and with the uncertainty of C.J.'s returnable timeline, Dan and Chris pose: with the weeks in the season dwindling on, can the Texans still make the playoffs following their starting quarterback set to miss a game or two in the coming weeks?

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Wouldn't you much rather have fourth quarter magic for the Texans,
But that just has not been the case whatsoever all season.
And with that we say, away we go and good morning.
Here it is the seven to ninety Morning Show, Dan Matthews,
Chris Gordy, Triple Emmanuel Elmore. The prototypical mixed bag weekend

(00:20):
around here sports wise, because as we let off right
there with the show open, I mean, you got the
Rockets just absolutely taking the Celtics behind the woodshed and
picking up that win. I mean, that's good. You got
Texas winning, that's nice. And then you get the mixed bag.
You get the Dodgers winning the World Series U of
H laying an egg over there at TDECU Stadium. And

(00:42):
then you get yesterday with the Texans where they did
have an eight point lead in the second half and
then Denver scores a touchdown, gets the two point conversion,
and then bo Nicks kind of shades a Baker Mayfield
in that Buccaneers game with screen from the quarterbacks down
the field and able to put them in position to

(01:04):
kick a field gold and win the game. So other
than that, just like I said, a mixed bag weekend,
it's like.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
I said a few weeks ago with the when the
Texans beat the Baltimore or Baltimore Ravens, you know, okay,
well this is uh be impressive. They beat the Orioles too, Yeah,
this is sorry. Got a great sweeper telling you I
get Mike in my wires, crossed runs in on Jackson
Holiday and all all those left handed bats in that lineup.

(01:34):
When they beat Baltimore, though, you felt like, all right,
it's a little bit of fools gold. They go to Seattle,
they get their butts beat, and then last week gets
San Fran. I said it, I'm like a little bit
of fools gold there. Because San Francisco's defensive front. You
start looking down and listening, going oh this, and you're
so used to San fran having a dominant defensive front.

(01:55):
I started looking at the names. I'm going, oh, this
is not very good. This is not a great defensive
front here. But we gave him credit. We said it
was the best game the offensive line played all year.
And then I looked at what Denver does and I said, oh,
you could literally go from the offensive line having their
best game to the offensive line having their worst game.

(02:16):
And it wasn't their worst game of the year. But
it was pretty bad yesterday. They gave up one, two, three,
four sacks. But obviously the story of the game Dan
was CJ. Stroud getting thrown to the ground, had get
getting hit awkwardly and laying on the ground for a while,
getting up, walking off, and then we find out he
is in concussion protocol. He is not returning, and this

(02:38):
is a Davis Mills game. And it was at that
time I said, they're not gonna win this game. But
they start getting some you know, making some drives, getting
some field goals, and.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
I'm going, oh, okay, they're up eight. They might pull
this out, maybe another field goal.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
And then Edward goes on their drive and yes they
get the touchdown, and yes they get the two points.
And that's when I started going, oh, they're not going
to win this game because Davis Mills cannot make the
big plays, the touchdown passes required to win this game. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
I mean, and you know, Nick Kyley's in the spotlight
again for the wrong reasons. But I mean, as the
show goes along, all so explain why. I really think
it's pretty ridiculous to blame him. But I am going
to then follow that up with blaming the play calling,
because you've got the opportunity there late in the game.

(03:31):
I think Denver had two timeouts with like fifty seconds
left or it was like a minute left, I don't
know what it was. It was south of the two
minute warnings. So I mean, you have a chance to
be able to burn some timeouts. You're throwing the football
like on your own thirteen. I just I don't really
understand that. And I know that you're going to say, well,
we weren't running the football. Have him burn their timeouts, man,

(03:52):
have them burn their timeouts. Yeah, then that way you
probably don't have the bow. Nick scrambles and he wasn't
throwing the foot ball that well yesterday eighteen of thirty seven, right,
So I mean, like, if you've got to make him
throw and he makes a couple of good throws and
then Will Lutz kicks the field goal to beat you, Okay, fine,
but it's just it's it's yet again, man.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
It's it's not just Nick Gayley. It's the clock management.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
Right there were you you were Mills one fourteen, You
got the ball tied fifteen to fifteen, Mills incomplete pass,
Mills short pass to Higgins Mills incomplete pass. Were those
downs you stop the clock for them, you punt, they
get the ball back with under a minute to go,
and they've got multiple timeouts and they could do whatever
the hell they want.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
Yeah, and they did. I mean that's why. I mean,
you have Nick's taken off for the run. But no,
I mean that's it's exactly it. And and Higgins, if
I'm not mistaken, he stepped out of bounds, did he not?

Speaker 4 (04:48):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (04:48):
I did.

Speaker 4 (04:49):
He ran out of bounds. It was so you stopped
the clock three straight times. There were so many little
plays here and there that they just didn't do right.
I mean, like that bownext twenty four yard scramble. You
got somebody who like the interior, sees it, Oh, let
me come up, but then there's nobody on the on
the outside. And it's like there was just so many

(05:10):
of those little plays.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Yesterday there was another one Henry Toatoa came just darting
up the up the a gap.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
He comes through, just misses the tackle.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Oh now there's nobody there on the backside to to
It's just like there was so many of those little
plays where it was like almost almost and this has
kind of been last year and this year under Demiko,
little plays where it's oh they were almost there. Oh
they were almost there. And I know I was watching
Dimiko throughout the game. He was smiling up a storm.
He was loving that.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
That was the Demico style game. He loves these games.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
Under twenty points, like, you know, because it's it's a
chance for his defense to make a statement. But you know,
we like in Houston, we like games in the thirties.
We like to see some offense. We've not seen it
this year. Nick Kayley, as saw somebody tweet it out.
You know, quarterbacks neak no not for Nick Cayley. Fullback
dive with an inexperienced, undersized converted running back.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
Yeah, let's go with that one twice. It's just, man,
what are we doing?

Speaker 2 (06:09):
Like it's it's trying to like be too smart, smartest
guy in the room, and sometimes you just gotta take
the play that's there.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
And as I said too, because it's me and wex
up there in the press box. Cole Thompson was up
there too. But where the false start. If you really
want to think about it this way, it's saved the
Texans because they would have gotten stopped on that fourth down,
and you wouldn't have gotten those points.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
Bill just said on Twitter, if CJ plays, who win
that game? What game were y'all watching?

Speaker 3 (06:38):
Maybe?

Speaker 2 (06:39):
I mean maybe again, And I don't want to poop
poo on Davis Mills too much, but by the way,
I've thought at this point, it's great how many years
he been in the league. Now, how many games has
he played? Dude, you got to be a viable enough
backup that you can lead us on a touchdown drive.
I'm sorry it's at this point, and I get Denver's
got a really good defense, but at this point in

(07:01):
your career, if you're going to be a backup for
this many years in Houston, you have to be ready
to answer the call when your number is called.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
You have to be able to do it.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
And you know, he made some okay throws early, but like, dude,
lead us on a touchdown drive.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
Well, my answer to Bill right there is he wasn't
and they didn't. I mean, that's and the reality of
the story is you're three and five now. I mean,
you had an opportunity to win, and it's compounded by
Jacksonville wins. Yesterday you lost to a team that probably
you are going to be battling with for playoff positioning.
I mean, unless Denver is able to with the Chiefs

(07:40):
losing yesterday, they're able to.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
Win the AFC West.

Speaker 1 (07:43):
But still, I mean, you lost to a team that's
in front of you for playoff positioning, and the same
deal goes with Jacksonville. You've got Indianapolis losing yesterday, which
they're going to start playing against better teams, and who knows,
maybe we've finally seen the end of Daniel Jones actually
being a viable good quarterback for them. But I mean

(08:05):
it's exactly it. But it even kind of underscores again,
I mean, to Bill's point, then why are you putting
it on him? I don't understand that right there, even
if you get stuffed for a two yard loss right
there and you're back, you're eleven or wherever they hell
you were at that point, Okay, fine, then run it again,
because not only did Denver win the game, Sean Payton

(08:29):
got to leave with a time out in his back
pocket because of that. I mean, he had to burn
his second time out of the game on the chance
to be able to line up Lutz and be able
to kick the field goal.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
That's when he was able to do that.

Speaker 1 (08:40):
So I mean, if nothing else, you got the home
field right there, go to overtime and take your chances.
You get the ball first, you kick a field goal.
I like my defense's chance of kicking them to I
don't know the twenty twenty five wherever they would have
if if you keep them back there deep and then
be able to try to put it on bow Nicks

(09:01):
and at that point you can have your your defense
go to work. I trust my defense much more than
I trust Davis Mills.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
I saw people tweeting two all seasons over and all
this kind of stuff.

Speaker 3 (09:12):
Not really.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
I mean these next two games, you get Jacksonville at
home and you're at Tennessee, you're gonna be favored.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
I think of both those.

Speaker 1 (09:19):
Now, this is where I am going to agree with
Bill because his number seven playing in that, Well, that's
a good point because number ten, number ten playing in it.
I don't care that you almost beat Jacksonville last time.
I don't feel good about beating Jacksonville with Davis Mills
or CJ.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
Stroud.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
That's fair. But again, you it's Jacksonville at home. You
gotta find a way but you're right. You know, most
most people typically in the NFL, most times these days,
you go into the concussion protocol, you're missing at least
a game.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
I mean, that's what happened with Nico Collins and CJ
a couple of years ago. So he missed two straight weeks.
We'll be on CJ watch all week monitor that.

Speaker 2 (09:59):
But yeah, again, find a way if you can win,
if you could beat Jacksonville, you're definitely gonna be Tennessee
in their house.

Speaker 3 (10:07):
So that gets you to five and five with Buffalo
coming to town on Thursday night.

Speaker 1 (10:11):
Man Titus Howard going out with the concussion yesterday, and
then you also lose Christian Kirk again with a shin
injury yesterday. I mean, that's the thing that Denver is
a physical football team, and well they approved that yesterday,
and the Broncos get out of here with an eighteen
to fifteen wins. So, like I said, you got the

(10:32):
Texans losing yesterday, the Rockets, they're gonna be back in
action tonight after winning over the weekend in Boston against
the Celtics. And then yeah, the Dodgers ended the season
winning the World Series. But we don't have to talk
about that very much. Yeah, no, I hear you on that,
and I think most people feel the same way. Come on,
Christian Kirk broken back double play to end it. What
are we doing here anyway? All right, let's continue the

(10:55):
Texans conversation. I know a lot of you want to
wait in on them this morning, so they're gonna be
the line's share of this show if you want to
get in at seven one three two one two five
seven ninety again at Seve one three two one two
five seven ninety.

Speaker 3 (11:06):
I know that I said I wasn't going to put it.

Speaker 1 (11:08):
Completely on this guy because Nick Cassario, I might have
thought he was helping out an old friend. He might
have set him up to fail. We'll discuss it. Is
