Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross ten o one.
It ain't sound good morning, and welcome to a Monday
edition of The Matt Thomas Show with Ross here on
Sports Talk seven anywhere. I try to think of a
(00:21):
song and open up the show. We got a few
more losses ahead of us. I think the rest of
the way check in out. But no, no, no, no,
no no. I want the world to know the Astros
made city of Houston. I'm checking out. I want the
(00:42):
world to no arrogat, he can't let it go. Okai
waiting went the old long, the old three plus. Yeah,
that wasn't a quality for start with. There was nothing
(01:03):
quality about it. At the end of the day, unfortunately
you got a quality start plus though from Mike Burrows
on on Friday ten nothing felt good and then the
weekend went downall I don't want the local line to
go two and four per week. Well, it's not a
(01:25):
recipe for success, but they've been pretty consistent with it
all year long, so I guess at least you have that.
Oh that is terrible, terrible, terrible. I mean, arra Getty
was pretty good all things considered. Brandon Shoeache hitting home runs, yeah,
got something, I guess. I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
What do you want to tell you? They're sixteen and
twenty five. Can I just say that, yeah, you can
say that. We can we can swap, we can focus
on I don't know. You want to break down Timberwolf Spurs.
We're gonna have to. Okay, you're a liar.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
It's probably against our best interest to do that. Mm hmm.
Maybe better, Maybe better just starting doing the Summer of
Fun right away. It's fine. We're getting close once an
hour giveaways. I don't know, uh, storytime with Jonathan. It
is our job. It is our responsibility to keep you entertained.
It's ready to go to sports, although you do have options.
(02:23):
You're like, I don't want to hear this. I don't
want to hear about my Astros baseball team not succeeding.
I don't want to hear about the fact that the
Summer Fun is going to come into play. I don't
want to hear thore's gonna be trade moovers about superstars
and second tier players and worrying about general managers and
worrying about managers. I think we feel, yeah, well, you
know what, lets the people know what we want to
(02:43):
what they want to talk about? Seven one, three, two, two, five,
seven eighty and Bobby Cox memories if you'd like, it's
an open line summer did he die or something? Yes?
He did? Oh man, that'll be should be believed or not? Today?
I might have that loaded from from a while ago.
Bobby Cox. Yeah, that's interesting, famous coxes Courtney Bobby do
(03:06):
we I'm Cox Communications. Uh yeah, it's gotta be that
guy's got to be a Cox. Yeah, I'm sure someone
in there is Cox Peacocks. Yeah, that doesn't work, all
right's game Cox Ross. How was your weekend? Weekend? Was
interesting but good? Okay? Sure, why not? We're gonna have
(03:28):
to really peel back the carden in our lives a
little bit. I don't really like doing that, though I
know you don't, so I'll do it.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
Ye, So you do.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Go ahead, and a fantastic Mother's Day lunch with my mother
and my wife and my kids and the whole family.
So that was nice. That's great. Uh, I will be
honest with you, for those of you that have children
that are in I didn't realize graduation party events were
such an event. What do you mean I mean we
are having we've had the paint done in the house.
(03:54):
We've had the signing, we're not signing. We've had put
down a new tile. I mean, our houses din't have
to do all that. I don't disagree with you, Yeah,
I do not disagree the miss The missus well, you know,
our house has been fifteen years old, so kind of
needed anyway. So it was kind of fine. Man, I'm sorry.
(04:14):
I was gonna say, minute made Daigen's twenty seven years old.
Looks good, It's right, Well, was gonna take it. So
we are. We got tenths coming in, We've got tables
coming in. Yeah, We've got Carly's hot high school graduation
and you know the great these graduation parties are themed parties. Now, No,
what's the theme? I don't know. That's why I thought
(04:36):
it was just take kind of our house and drop
some money off a student loan debt? Is that the theme? Thankfully?
Not with her? It's crazy. It is absolutely crazy. So
we got one of our great listeners, Roddy and Rodney's
Barbecue is going to be catering out. Yeah, so that's
good right there. Make sure you get you're getting some
beef rib. I don't know. I didn't order. I don't know,
(04:57):
so you're just signed the chick. I just saw the bill. Yeah,
I'm like, this better be the party for the ages.
Oh wow, you know what this sounds like. It's your fault.
You sound like you're being hands off. You sound like
a good dad to me, Matt, thank you very much. No,
thank you. Not involved at all and just cutting the check.
I guess that's what a good dad does. But brothers
don't have grid parties? Do we did? We? I didn't
think I was high school graduation party. Yeah, had the
(05:17):
family came over, we got we got a muddey acchi band. Yeah,
I don't I remember having a party. There is graduating
and being done with it. It didn't feel like it
was for me. It felt like it was just more
for the family to get together. Yeah, get and get
and get drunk and go to the pool. Oh mine
was COVID So I got money at all? That's tough. Yeah.
I almost feel bad for you. You feel like you need
(05:39):
a new round of things you missed out on. Honestly,
you guy, John, let me tell you how you missed
the boat on everything. Trust me, you guys you know screwed.
There's a generational divide between like COVID kids and non
COVID How many different high schools did you have to
go to? I went to two? Okay, I'm just curious
if you're if you had to go to different school because, uh,
(06:01):
whether it was flooding or COVID or you know, moving
some kids in and out of stuff, it was gonna
be a big deal or not. So all right, Well,
uh but yeah, COVID kids, I feel bad for y'all.
I mean, y'all do. Yeah, you do. You get an
extra your eligibility and you get get to work from
home whenever every adult around you's got brain fog, extra eligibility.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
Everything's we got the fight we had to face twenty
five years old.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
It's five year old. Yeah, that's true. It was worse
for you, grown man. You're you're running track against people
that had two kids. Yeah, literally and solid security accounts.
I got ya, I got you. All right. So here's
the radio program today eleven thirty. We have to tell
the truth and then I'll be coming up today. Are
you gonna do three? Only guess three truths in one lie?
It's you've been mailing it in. It's uh, mailing in
(06:45):
is not the terms. It's not easy, so you know
what not to not today because I'm not prepared. But
let me see, let me do next week. Yeah, and
that's just remind me. Yeah, yeah, I handled today. Okay,
we have Missing You at one thirty. Today we get wonderful. Well,
we won't be missing from Bravaldo is the way he
performed it last time. We don't have that last appearance
in the Missing You final? Are you go Missing You?
If you've been suspended for your start? I think the
(07:05):
Detroit Tigers are like Missing You. They've been missing him too,
because they also got Trek Scougle down in another picture.
I think, yeah, they're they're in a mess.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
We've got believe it or not today, which of course
should be Bobby Cox yet that we're doing famous coxes.
Oh who is the Cox? That Nikki Cox that was
married to Jay uh uh oh oh h j Moore,
the redhead from the it was the rip off of
the show from Maldre. Is she Okay? Last time I
(07:37):
saw she was great?
Speaker 3 (07:39):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (07:40):
Her and Jay Moore got divorced in twenty eighteen. Yeah,
and then he married Genie Buss and they only lived together.
That sounds like a great arrangement. Well, I'm sure there
was pre Neepsen via then they both had their money.
I mean, I think I think she's doing a little better.
I think I think yeah, I think they live like
in a three bedroom condo and they have like their
own floor. So like, yeah, I don't know how much
(08:01):
he's making off of those residuals off the showtime specials. Well,
she's got the ten Billy from the Los Angeles Lakers. Yeah,
so she's diding quite well. All right, So the Astros, Look,
you can't get into a deep dive. When a team
collects three hits on Sunday, we can break down each
(08:21):
one of the hits. Matt Thomas is gonna break down
each of the Astros three hits. It's all I gotta do.
I catch you know what I was doing yesterday when
I was looking at the box score? Yeah, I was
just looking for like you know, left on bail, just
you know, box score out watching after the game. So
you sure sure? And I was like, uh, I don't
know that it hasn't been published yet. They're runners in
scoring position opportunities. Why need to show up? It's not
(08:43):
loading on the box score. Oh, they had zero zero
opportunities with the runners in scoring position.
Speaker 4 (08:50):
Could y'all guess that this in May eleventh? This is
what the ash was going to be?
Speaker 1 (08:55):
Sixteen and twenty five didn't really see that coming. I
mean I would say that it Well, first of all,
you can't see the Hunter Brown's getting hurt. You can't
see the German Paine is gonna miss as much. I mean,
there are something like your four A players. If they
get hurt, it's fine. I mean, going back on the
injury lists again, everybody's been hurt and then they've been
(09:18):
and then the pitching is bat. I didn't think the
pitching was gonna be bad. I remember we were Kevin
were like, hey, what is our underrated storyline to the
Astros one. I think the pitching depth is gonna be
all right, guys, Well, everybody's arm fell off within the
first two weeks of the season, so that happened, and
then might so Emi has been a non factor. Hunter Brown.
We didn't anticipate getting hurt at all. Right, at least
(09:39):
Mike Burrows is turning around some, but it's it's kind
of been. But the group of Gordon Alexander Weiss. Yeah, uh, Emi,
you scored one run in the last You just have
not You've gotten nothing out of that group of what
what Dana would call depth. Yeah, the pitching has been
(10:00):
good enough to win in the last couple of games,
but I mean Chase Burns is really good and then
you got shut down yesterday. So yeah, you scored one
run in the last two games. Man O's l two
Bays ops is down to seven oh two. It's not good. Wow,
decline continues. Sorry, I don't know. I'm even gonna look
(10:20):
at the DRS leaderboard. No, no, no, no, no need to
do that. Perettiz is the ops seven thirty one. That's okay.
I mean you still have got too many guys in
your lineup. I mean it's the lineup is cooled off considerably.
Let me give you an example. Oh two, Ba's ops
is seven oh two. Ops should be about seven fifty
eight hundred. Put you in a good category. Alvarez even
just about an zero for four to four strikeout jest
(10:43):
Holden unfortunate. Perttys ops is seven thirty one. Christian Walker's
ops is eight to seventy six, which is good just
about over three day for him. Cam smith Is ops
is six forty two. That's not gonna cut it for
every day right field, or it's just not Bryce Matthews
being your everyday center field or ops is seven o one.
(11:04):
Nick Allen playing a lot of the left side of
the infield is ops is five fifteen, and it's Nick
Allen though, yeah, it's Nick Allen. Salas are having a
good an occasional Startar salves are is says Oar salas
Are Zach Cole's giving you some power. Bryce Matthews, I
mean he's cool and off someome, but I mean he's
(11:26):
had a little bit of power too. He's got four
home runs. I mean, you're not going to and I
don't think I'm speaking out of school here. You're not
going to win a game when the five pitchers that
take the hill for you are Tang blue Ball, Bolton Murray,
and Van Way. Sweet kids, I'm sure they're but that's
that's not a major league lineup of pictures that's going
(11:48):
to be able to piece mill you a bullpen game,
and it feels like ROSSI we're getting a bullpen game
a week at this Morth at the end of the
day gave up just five not just five runs, but
five run. You gotta score. He scored zero. They could
have given up one run, it wouldn't have mattered. Yeah,
so we have to shake ourselves. We're gonna continue to
(12:09):
pound until you get into some positivity, at least something,
because we're gonna we can't the summer can't be full
of this. I don't want to come to you guys
on a Monday A goal. Here we go again, the
Astros lose. I mean that's all right. A co A's
Peter Lambert on the hill tonight inside kaiwaitan bounce? I mean, sorry, tattoo,
(12:33):
em I bounce back Tuesday. How important is this week?
I put this on the pre show tweet. Is it
a must win week for I do not. I don't
want to do that, but I do think we need
to kind of start thinking a little bit about this
because I think we're not the only ones that have
been talking about how important this week is. Because the
fact that you are starting to lose a little bit
more ground in the nation in the American League Central,
(12:55):
not because you're playing this god awful baseball, but the
top team, meaning Oakland, is playing a little bit better,
and you cannot continue to hope and pray that the
team that is a top of the American League West
i e. The Athletics is playing at around five hundred baseball.
And it's not only just the A's you're chasing. You
have to the marior They all have to like kind
(13:16):
of stay stagnant while you surge. And that's just that's
kind of happening. Well still sort of. A's are five
and five, Rangers are five and five in the last ten,
Mariners are four and six, the Ages are four and six,
and the Asters are five and five. So but you're
slipping and you're five and a half back now, and
last week it was what three or four? Yeah, you
go from you can go from four to five and
a half in a very short period of time. Well
(13:37):
they did. They're tied for last place with the Angels.
So it's everybody has to stay asleep while you wake up. Meanwhile,
the Mariners. Is cal Rawley ever going to hit again?
I mean it was, Yes, he will, but it was
an outlier year for him last year. There's no doubt
about that. All Right. We have so lots of really
nice people. Steve doug Mark, I love this. We end
(14:03):
up hey ten o'clockers. We love you a lot, love
you a lot. Thank you very much for being a
part of our radio show today. Seven one three, two
one two five, seven ninety. If you want to chime
in seven one three two one two five seven nine zero.
Time is ten fourteen. It's Matt and Ross. We are
with you today until two pm to tell the truth.
(14:24):
Eleven thirty, I'm missing you. One thirty believe it or not.
Bobby Cox at one fifty it is sports Talk. Seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
Thank you.
Speaker 5 (14:32):
That's drilled deep to left field and you can kiss
that one. Goodbye, Spencer. Steer goes deep and it is
five nothing reds number seven for Steer.
Speaker 1 (14:55):
I got a news prayer, Rossia. This may be one
of the most over songs in the history of music.
When you have to take four minutes to get to
the to the big crescendo the chorus, don't stop believing
it's too long. Let's go speaking not too long? Are
(15:15):
you serious? Shahanis not long enough? As the kids say,
are you dead ass?
Speaker 6 (15:22):
What?
Speaker 1 (15:25):
I'll take it? The dead ass is cold? Bit's cold.
Building up a song. I'm building up. It takes no
a mess of build up. I know you're used to
the two minutes of nursery rhymes and from the bet
of seventy five seconds sertimes, you gotta build a little something,
build on something. I don't even take a nap, Go
get some lunch, take a stroll. And then it went
to the crescendo.
Speaker 4 (15:45):
A whole song is don't stop believing, and you can't
believe into the songs over.
Speaker 1 (15:48):
Okay, I can't believe it's taking so long to get
to the chorus. Go to one symphony bro like sixty
minutes of a christ till a crescendo. I mean, come on, dude,
are you serious? All your music takes the who is
wrong with you? Oh? It takes too long to build
the chorus? Journey? Don't why did this movie?
Speaker 7 (16:10):
Why?
Speaker 1 (16:10):
Why is this movie over ninety minutes? It's about the story,
It's about the journey. Oh, I didn't realize way to journey.
We were listening to a five minutes song that could
get to the don't believe minutes. Let's get to it
like a ninety seconds two minutes. This is one of
your all time worst music. I don't think. Yeah, you're
telling you don't even count. You don't come on and
(16:33):
he counts you know what if he agreed with you
right now. No, it's fine. Sometimes you gotta you gotta
build a song up, Build on man, build it is fine.
Uh take six months to build it as something else.
Six months? Why can't they just get to the guitar
(16:55):
solo and stair away to Heaven? You gotta build it up, baby?
Why don't that free free Bird? Do you hate freeburg too?
It's okay, Oh, what about American Pile? Like but at
(17:16):
least you get the chorus. American Pile seven minutes, so
you're worried about where the chorus is? What about Bohemian
Rap City that's got a slow build? It's okay. You
don't like that song?
Speaker 8 (17:29):
No, man, Oh my god, it's about five minutes and nothing.
Even even the late would admit this.
Speaker 1 (17:41):
You would not. It's five minutes of nothing. Yeah, what
was it about? That's one of the greatest about it.
It's just about a poor boy and nobody loves him. Okay,
this is the only time I would recommend you get
us have ability on Twitter this Well, it won't be
the last.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (18:03):
Wow, it's a good song. I just wish the chorus
would come a little bit longer, faster, it's a little
faster than the song.
Speaker 3 (18:08):
That's it.
Speaker 1 (18:09):
That's all I'm saying. It's not my favorite Journey song.
A lot of other good a lot of good ones.
And by the way, go on to see we're gonna
delete this from the podcast. I'm gonna say it's fine.
I'm gonna save you from your set. It's fine. It's fine,
Stairway Heaven's fine, Free Birds fine, and Bohemian rap City
is not good. And journeys don't stop believing to all
(18:31):
too slow build ups. You're you know what you are.
You're like a TikTok eight year old. You've got no
intention span and you're saying this needs that, this needs
to happen right now. Where's my chorus?
Speaker 4 (18:45):
Sometimes the things are better when you build up, Matt,
And that's exactly what's going with the Astros. Stop believing
you so you think, don't stop believing? Is the Astros
are twenty twenty six? If you want to go to
that parallel and I'll buy it. We're hoping, you know,
maybe because though get some way, ye Matt, Sometimes you
got to build up slow before the explosion.
Speaker 3 (19:06):
Are we time? My music?
Speaker 1 (19:07):
Are our lives? Just okay? Just start it out there. Look,
I'm gonna I'm gonna state of vulnerability. I can't fight you.
You don't have to fight me. I just said that
it's a good song that just takes too long to
get you. Called the most overrated songs of a lot
of the most operrated song, not the most overrated that'd
(19:31):
be involving anything involving Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen on
the show. I didn't know what his takes are. I
don't even care. Let's talk to Steve on seven ten
twenty five. Steve, good morning to you, Good morning guys.
Speaker 7 (19:47):
You know I I want to make a bet with
you guys, and you know what I got.
Speaker 1 (19:52):
I call in all the time.
Speaker 9 (19:54):
If the Astros win five games in a row, I
will buy you guy's dinner at any restaurant you want.
And I have never been so certain that this bet
will never be hit because the Astros are in a
whirlpool of trouble. And the reason I say that is,
(20:15):
you know, when Dana Brown left the Atlanta Braves, they
were in a downspin.
Speaker 3 (20:21):
Look at him now.
Speaker 9 (20:22):
I believe they have the best record in baseball, don't they?
Speaker 1 (20:25):
Yes? This year?
Speaker 6 (20:27):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (20:28):
Okay, So they've been building this up to this point.
Dana Brown has the thumbprint of this team on him
because there's nothing that he can say. And every time
he comes on your show, talks about all, well, we're
fortunate this and that, and he's gonna come out of it.
Speaker 3 (20:49):
And he's had one game.
Speaker 9 (20:50):
He's a great you know, he's great, he's coming.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
Out of it.
Speaker 9 (20:53):
Blah blah blah. I think Dana Brown needs to go
number two. You know, Joe was a great guy, probably
one of the nicest managers out there, but I didn't
realize that there is actually a key and a point
that a manager has to know when to take somebody
(21:13):
out and when to leave him in.
Speaker 7 (21:15):
And here lately, Joe A.
Speaker 9 (21:16):
Spott has been leaving a picture in usually one bat
or too long. And I don't know if it's just
me or if you guys are seeing it too. You know,
we used to complain about Dusty Baker going in and
grabbing a guy too fast.
Speaker 3 (21:28):
Why is he doing that?
Speaker 10 (21:29):
Why is he doing that?
Speaker 9 (21:31):
Well, I think because Dusty Baker has been in it
long enough that he can see when a pitcher is
to the point where he's got to come out Joe's
spotted does not have that. And from from a fan
aspect of it, this this team is terrible to watch.
I mean, when somebody gets a run, I'm watching something else.
(21:52):
I'm watching bowling. That's how bad it is.
Speaker 10 (21:54):
I'm watching bowling instead.
Speaker 9 (21:56):
Of the Astros yep our pick kitball or whatever in
the hell they call it terrible. There is no way whatever,
tickle whatever, it's more interesting. Yeah, And watching this Astros team,
it's just it's just terrible. And I don't see, Like
I said, if they.
Speaker 1 (22:16):
Went five in a row, you don't have you don't
warn about that, Thank you very much. On the phone call, Steve, look, okay,
hold on the spot. People always called in and complained
about Dusty Baker leaving guys in too long all the time.
And in Joe's case, yesterday, uh he went to Kawait
(22:37):
Tang and said, how do you feel? Can you give
me another inning? And Kaywait Tang said, yeah, give me
another ending. I feel good. Now. You balance how what
a player tells a manager and what a manager's got
instinct feels, and and yesterday was that didn't turn out
well because kywait Ting went out on the fourth thing
and got beat up pretty badly. I don't remember that
happening a lot and frankly again, And if you want
(23:01):
to say I'm defending a manager, that's okay. I mean,
I'm just telling you this is just my opinion nothing.
I'm remember the spot of family that if you have
been trying to manage that roster with this pitching staff
this year, figuring out who can start, how many innings
guys can go, and when you are trying to give
your bullpen a day off or try to at least
(23:22):
not use as many relievers, you take your chances.
Speaker 3 (23:25):
Now.
Speaker 1 (23:25):
The only reason why I think people this is a
little brush back on yesterday is because the bullpen went
not been used a whole lot on Friday and Saturday,
and that if you were going to go to Kaiwaiting,
don't even give him the option of saying I'll give
you another anying. I think I got it. Most pictures
are going to probably tell you, yeah, I got another
inning in me. He clearly did not. And the Astros
got beat up on the ending that the Kaiwaiting went
(23:46):
out there for the fourth inning, and they also scored
zero runs, So I mean, I get that. And Joe
has been leaving guys in there, and a lot of
times it's like, not necessarily leave him out to dry,
but guys have to go out there and eat innings. Like, okay,
you've given up four runs, we're out of this one,
but the bullpen has already taxed, so we got to
keep leaving you out there. So Joe has been leaving
guys out there. But that's a lot of times just
(24:08):
because we're probably out of this game anyways, in the
bullpen attext, like all right, lanceome Colors, you've given us nothing,
so please try to give us at least one more
inning so you can get to three. And he can't
do that. So to me, I haven't seen him leaving
guys out there too long. That's always a hindsight thing too. Absolutely,
(24:29):
Oh you left him out there for one bat or
two much. When a pitcher gets out of a jam,
nobody says anything. It's on the picture. Good job pitcher.
When the picture doesn't give it out of a jam,
it's on the manager, bad job manager. If you want
to describe while the astros are poor off of what
Kaiwai tanks did up there too long yesterday, that's certainly
(24:50):
you doing using a microscope if you want. I don't
think that's the reason why. I think it'd be zero
opportunities with three hits and no opportunities with runners in
scoring position all game long. Yeah, there there are lots
of issues keeping Kiwaitang out there for two or three
extra batters, probably, and the big picture of things is
not the main one. But I could be wrong. I'd
(25:11):
still rather watch that. It just it it added to
the frustration because you didn't score any runs and you
thought Kywaiting can give you another inning. Maybe you could
find yourself a potential spot starter in Kywaitang. I think
the evidence now clearly dictates he's a guy that gives
you two three innings, the very very most. Ten thirty
(25:33):
two on Sports Talk seven ninety. Good morning everybody, Thank
you ten o'clock for being a part of our show.
Seven one three two one two five seven nine zero.
It is an important week. The question is how important
a week of it is it for the Astros. Eight
is ten thirty seven of Sports Talk seven out eight.
Matt and Ross with you here until two o'clock. We've
(25:53):
got to tell the truth at eleven thirty, missing you
at one thirty. Believe or not at one fifty, the
news at noon and Will Wemby survey suspension that penalty two,
elbowed and nas reed that was set fire. Hit direct hit.
(26:15):
I mean he cocked back. He's like, I'm gonna hit
him and hit him hard. He did a little fire
from Wimby. It was funny. He goes to Harrison Barnes
and says, what does that mean? Penalty two? It means
you get your ass out of the arena. He goes, Okay,
I'm out of here. And he didn't fight it. He
knew it. He knew he did. I'm frenchies get a
little angry, do they? I thought they were passive?
Speaker 7 (26:36):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (26:38):
I thought there were a fail I don't know across
the kind of angry French kissing. That's true, all right, So,
uh what do you think you think it's serious? Well,
I think one game out, it's the playoffs that should
be enough. I cannot take my opinion because it's part
of the tell the truth that's called a professional radio tea.
(27:00):
Fus Nicks last night absolutely destroyed the Philadelphia seventy six ers,
Joel Embiid saying he apparently wasn't really thrilled that the
seventy six ers made a tray with Oklahoma City for
Jerry McClain for a second round pick and got nothing
out of it, and got nothing in return to Philip
Spot and they got blasted four times rolled by the
New York Knicks. Darryl Mory may be a little bit
(27:23):
of trouble there as your VP of basketball operations for
the Philadelphia seventy s. Speaking of complicated legacies we were
talking about, I mean James Harden. Of course, his legacy
a little bit tied to Darryl Morey in a way. Yeah,
what Darryl Mory's like, I mean, undeniably revolutionized basketball. Well,
(27:43):
I like Darryl. I like his family. Unfortunately, fortunately, thank
you for liking my family. Matt Garrett Cole mix in
there too. I don't think what are you talking about.
Aren't you just find as a general manager by championships?
(28:04):
Aren't you not second rounds? You can also be defined
by revolutionizing the game. I discovered three is more than two.
Great job, Daryl. I don't know. I think Darryl's I
think if Darryl really wants to be known as one
(28:25):
of the all time grades, and like I said, he
doesn't care he's made a lot of money's done very
well for himself. My guess is and he's really he's
he's not a bad dude. I like, here's the thing.
It's hard, hi because I like it, But I do
think you if you're going to be judged among the
great front office people in any sport, you do have
to have a championship banner. Yeah. Yeah, but we don't
even really talk about. I mean, who's the greatest general
(28:46):
manager in basketball history right now? Probably, uh, Jerry west
rd Aurbach would be in the mix. Yeah, yeah, Rob,
I mean Rob Polinka, Rod Thorn with the with the Bulls. Yeah,
it's like, oh, Jerry Kraus, Jerry Krause. I guess it's
not one of those things that you do, not something
you know, we don't make it. Hey, guys, coming up
(29:07):
in the next segment, we're gonna go with there Mount
Rushmore of NBA GLS. I don't think. I don't think
fans are doing that, but I think I among your
own brethren, you're doing that. I think Daryl Morey's on
the short list though, just for the way he revolutionized
the game obviously didn't win a championship. Also ran up
against a Warriors dynasty and Chris Paul's hamstring mm hmm,
(29:29):
and the seventy six ers. I mean, honestly, I'll probably
shuffled around and tinkering a little too much over there.
And it's not his fault that Joel embiid is. I mean,
he's injury prone. He's seven foot two in giant, hostile,
he's constantly hurt. Let me ask you this and then
we'll go back to the phones for a second. Here
Joel will put its kid up there on the podium. Youstery,
(29:50):
what are your thought about shielding? Was he shielding? Well,
that's what I'm saying. Do you think putting your kid
up there makes it soften the blow of you just
got your as the nick to humanize themselves. Remember when
Mark McGuire was getting asked, Hey, Mark McGuire, you injected
your ass with steroids for several years, right, and he's
like holding his kid. We're not gonna talk about that,
are we going to? Buddy? Like, you want to bring
(30:11):
your kid up there with this on the stand with
you too for your perjury. I just I think it's
a bad look for all sports teams in wins or loss.
Remember Steph Curry put his kid up there, win dad,
But they do it when they win too. I mean,
Jason Tatum is always but what's this kid's name? Deuce?
I just think I think that's something you don't put
three year olds on a podium. I think you put
(30:31):
them at that. You're using mist as mascots, that when
you are on the show, you're using them as a shield. Whatever.
But I mean that's answering questions following games is part
of your responsibility as a as an athlete. You're trying
to humanize yourself. Maybe it's a good pr move. I mean,
would you imagine my little kids up here and did
the show with you and and had them up here
(30:52):
talking really weird? Yes, I'm saying, I don't know. I
just why does your dad hate good music? No, they
would not. I thought all your kids have varying different
different opinions about your music tastes. They all yeah, Pat
my middle of my Peyton loves everything I listen to.
Who fights with you the most? My music? Cameron? Yeah,
(31:14):
but he's just like guess Cameron contrarian over there? Yes
he is. Yeah, I wan't you go over there, shut
up and root for the Panthers. Cameron. Yeah, he Cameron
is my oldest For those admors, I mean that doesn't
root for the team. He roots for the players, like
he is. His sister Carly's gonna play volleyball and they're
gonna play Davidson this year in Charlotte, and he's like, Dad, please,
(31:38):
if the if the Panthers play, I've got to go
see carl play volleyball on Friday and Saturday and watch
the Panthers on Sunday. And like, I raised a Carolina
Panther fan. It's weird. It's so bizarre. He loves Bryce
Young more than Davis Mills or less than Davis Mills. Uh,
probably more because at least Bryce plays. Hurts my heart?
Speaker 3 (32:01):
What did I?
Speaker 6 (32:01):
What did I?
Speaker 1 (32:02):
He loved Brett Farv when he was a Viking. That
makes sense. He was in Minnesota. He was in Minneapolis.
That's true. I mean I get he gets a pass
on that, but he, my son is the generation he's
twenty five, loves the athlete more than the team. Yeah,
and we un I fight about that all the time.
How that that possibly happen? I mean I get it,
because well, you're also in the day and age of
(32:24):
a free agency back in the day, your player wasn't
going anywhere. That's right, Well they wanted to or not exactly. Well,
you're either going to sign this contract or you're not
gonna play in this league. Yes, now it's quite different,
all right, David, Mark, James, and Doug. We'll get to
all four of you, I promise as the Matt Thomas
Show at Ross continues here on Sports Talk seven nine ers,
(32:47):
let's go the phone talk to some great people in Houston, Texas.
Thank you very much for being a part of our
show on this Monday. It is Matt and Ross. We
are with you today until two pm. Sports Talk seven
ninety seven one three two one two five seven nineties.
You reach our show today and we will go next
to Mark and Cyprus.
Speaker 3 (33:05):
Hi Mark, good morning, gentlemen. Thank you so much guys
to take taking my call Astro. You know, we all
we all talk about, you know, the injuries and you
know all that stuff that's empired. But we look back
at the last ten game segments as we go along, right,
(33:25):
So we go one and nine, two in a you know,
three and seven, well, and so we go five and five. Right,
So I'm thinking I'm trying to I'm trying to stay
positive on this, so you know, I'm thinking that's that's
a positive sign. Then we we go to Cincinnati, we
out hit them, outscored them by three runs, not a lot,
(33:49):
and then we can still lose the series. You know,
something just not clicking just right. I would like to
see a little bit more chemistry, a little bit more fire,
and then I'll leave this at that, leave this with
the spot. I would like to see him getting their
butts a little bit, show a little bit of fire, desire,
(34:11):
you know, to maybe change seat, you know, change things
up until we get everybody back and I get we
have it. What about one hundred and twenty games left.
There's a lot that can happen. But I'm just gonna
try to stay positive on this because they can turn
it around and have the plate. I'll love it.
Speaker 1 (34:28):
I'll leave it at this.
Speaker 3 (34:30):
Stop guessing what's coming, react to what's coming, and I'm
gonna hang up. And I want to hear your thoughts.
Speaker 1 (34:37):
That's hitting, coach, that's hitting coach. Mark appreciate it well,
does sometimes like I'm swinging no matter what. Watch this, yeah, bam,
what was the first thought he said? Oh, a little fire.
Let me hey, you want to show a spoty to
flip some tables, put some fingers in some people's chest.
(34:57):
Get these guys fired up. Come over here, Nick Allen
longing that wacked chest over here. Listen here, bring you
and your translator as you're getting a piece of my mind.
Colton Gordon, get over here. You better stop thrower. Start
throwing some strikes, not the bones. I don't know why
(35:21):
Joe's country accent, but he is.
Speaker 2 (35:24):
Yeah, sh.
Speaker 1 (35:28):
Oh, sorry, here's somebody else. All I will say is
this not being privy to a major league clubhouse. If
you start acting away that you want him to flip
the switch, he's dead man walking. I mean everybody wanted
Dusty Baker to get run from games. You know what
it is. Everybody's angry about the Astros losing, so they
(35:49):
want to see some anger from everyone else. I think
it's like some kind of transference or something like that.
Everyonebody wants Joe spot it. Not everyone. I'm obviously just
painting with a broad brush. Everybody wants Joe's body get mad.
Dusty Baker never gets thrown out of a game, Like,
why why does he show a little fire? Why does
he care a j Hinch like, we can just go
back down the list basically, well, once you get Jimmy Williams.
(36:11):
That guy got fired up and everybody hated him. Guy's
an a hole, by the way, Sorry he was. He
was a bona fide a hole. I hated why there
are much much more successful when the more players manager
Phil Gardner came in May he rest. I mean we can,
we can basically just go all the way back there.
I'm just gonna give you a blanket statement, and if
(36:35):
I'm wrong, please call me out on it. Ross. Okay,
if the astro is making manager will move this year,
which is very well on the possible, they might. Okay,
we're not going to see a change. No, I mean
I think all of us have eyes. Some have two eyes.
I'm at four eyes. Oh wow, if your contacts or glasses,
(36:57):
we know who this team is. We we just to playing. Look, Uh,
Cam Smith has yet to turn it on offensively consistently.
My thought is that Bryce Matthews, as much as we
love him in a great love defensive work and had
a big game that last week, He's probably not a
six day a week player. Uh. Any Omar Lopez led
(37:22):
team is not going to be able to all of
a sudden reinvigorate the pitching rotation when you have Mike
Burrows as your cos I mean, you know what I'm saying.
I mean, hey, hold on now, Peter Lambert, Spencer Arraghetty
are co ass Okay? I think y'all get what I'm saying.
How about the how the Boston Red Socks have been
doing since firing Alex Korra. They're about five hundred, but
(37:45):
they're not They're not They're not They're not significantly better.
Same thing for the Philadelphia Phillies. Uh. Not that managerial
changes don't work, But I'm just gonna say, through these
my semi trained eyes of watching baseball my life, Carl's
Kraa being gone all of a sudden, Carlos Kray is
not gonna be able to have his tendon put back
(38:07):
into place because they make a managerial change. If we
still have h Alan playing five days a week, Nick, Nick,
he said you were gonna learn his name. I know,
I almost said Zach again. I'm sorry, Nick Allen playing
five days a week. I'm sure a swell fella. I'm
sure a one of human being that's not gonna change
around the fortune of a basement. He can. He can
(38:28):
hardly hit his weight, and that's just that's just who
he is. So if you want to go run to Twitter,
that's where people tend to run and yell to the
top of your lungs about how a manager will change needed.
Because Joe spot is under the fire and a belly
you you're probably going to win. I mean, I give me.
I mean the leaning is towards this not ending well
(38:49):
for him, and I think Joe appeared understands that you
will all know the negativity and this is just You're
always gonna win. If I call for Joe's Spotty to
be fired every day from here until eternity, I'm gonna win. Eventually,
Yes you are. I will win. If I call for
Emado going to be fired from here to the mountaintops,
eventually I will win. But the question is is he
(39:11):
holding the team back?
Speaker 3 (39:12):
Now?
Speaker 1 (39:12):
Is Joe Aspoda holding back to Houston Astros? The answer
is no, and that you know what if he if
he gets let go or whatever, I mean, we'll see,
we'll find I'm not going to shed a tear for
the guy. Heavily compensated, but he's also getting to work again.
He's got a name, and it's impossible task right now.
He was interviewed around many different Major league places and
(39:33):
was never hired. There is that other teams didn't see
him as the top candidate to be their leader. Dana Brown,
same thing, Dana Brown, same thing as well. Yes, so
I'm not asking, I'm not acting like Joe A. Spotta
is some you know, master stroke, pulling all the right
levers baseball and genius. I'm just what we're trying to
say is life ain't fair. Joe knows that, but I
(39:56):
would not expect you know, for instance, Jimmy Williams openly
just didn't get along with the players, and that that's
just that's bad. And when you have Jimmy Williams going
my way to the highway, even back in the late nineties,
that just wasn't gonna work. Yeah, two thousands, ask uh Matt.
(40:18):
Who are the back to back World Series champions, the
Los Angeles Dodgers. How do the Dodgers fans feel about
David Hate Dave Roberts. They hate him, despise him. They're
back to back World Series. It's the players at the
end of the day, yes. Now, if they all the
players hate the manager, then that's right, right, exactly exactly,
(40:41):
if they if they go to a if they're having
a private meeting, they're like, I don't think this is
a guy would rather have Omar Lopez, And they want
to do that. That's fine, that's fine, But I think
low again, we'll go to the low hanging fruit, low
hanging fruit, and maybe Joe will be gone and maybe
things will turn around. But I think it will turn
around more if Hunter Brown comes back and is good.
If tatsu Emi can show us a little bit of anything,
(41:04):
and you get those two pieces with Lambert keeping it up,
Arroghetti keeping it up, something for Mike Burrows. That's a
good one through five potentially. But we haven't seen it yet. No,
we have not. I mean we have a huge I
mean Tatsui Emi has done nothing at the monor league
level to inspire us to have confidence right back on
(41:24):
the mague. He's ready to dominate Baby Good Feelings tomorrow.
Oh is that right?
Speaker 7 (41:29):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (41:30):
I can't wait for that eleven thirty Maybe a QSL QUSL.
It's catching on. Quality Start Light and Quality start Plus
is catching on. Matt must your chagrin. There's no one
I don't see when Buster only brings it up, it's fine.
How come? How comes nobody ever chagrins unless it's something
that they don't like you? Have you ever heard anybody
(41:50):
chagrin anything? How can you use the word chagrin unless
it's much too yeah, or susceptible to when you're susceptible
to anything? Good?
Speaker 6 (42:00):
Mmm?
Speaker 1 (42:01):
Think about it. Well, I think it's susceptible. Yeah, it
means weakness probably right. M m's The Matt Thomas Show
with Ross eleven all four on Sports Talk seven. NINTI
man had watched with you here until at two o'clock
today seven one three two one two five seven Nini,
(42:24):
thank you very much for listening. To means a lot
to us that you have spent part of your day
with us seven one three two one two five seven
Ninti seven one three two one two five seven Ai.
I actually, I'll be fully honest with you. I was
gonna think of saving for to tell the truth, but
I'm not gonna do it. I actually watched a little
bit of the Dallas Wings versus uh Indiana fever. Yes,
(42:47):
and remember I called w NBA games thirty years ago. Hm,
they actually make more baskets now than they do in
the past. Okay, I would it be safe to say
that them in sport a basketball has improved more over
time than any other sport in America today, Like, for instance,
(43:08):
we talk about bigger, faster, stronger with athletes in baseball,
but it's everywhere. You still watch a nineteen ninety two
baseball game and go, man, this is incredible. Or watching
an NBA game and at tenny two you watch a
two thousand, you watch a nineteen ninety seven w NBA
game and you're poking your eyes out. I'll tell you
another one that you're gonna roll your eyes at. Soccer
(43:28):
has gotten a lot improved. They they changed a couple
of the rules that you used to be like to
be able to pass it back to the keeper as
much as you wanted.
Speaker 3 (43:36):
You can't.
Speaker 1 (43:36):
You can't do that anymore. Okay. They changed they altered
the off sides rule, and then they awarded instead of
two points for it used to be two points for
a win, one point for a draw, they traded to
three points to incentivize winning. So scoring is up in
like all that type of stuff in soccer the last
I don't know thirty forty years as well. And I'll
be honest, I've told you this before. I don't know
what's going on with me this summer. I've had some
(43:57):
more downtime unfortune because the Rockets are not playing. But
I watched a WNBA. I watched UFL not this weekend
because okay, but because that's awful. But I've given it.
I'm trying to give it a try. I'm trying to
diversify my pal a little bit. Okay, Now, I'm not
gonna intentionally sit down and watch a WNBA game. But
(44:18):
the one I watched, the one that was talked about
the most, that had cant I mean, and frankly, Claitland
Clark wasn't even like the best player on the floor
that day. They were making threes, there weren't layups that
were hitting the window and going back to mid court.
I mean, it wasn't as bad as I thought I
was gonna be. Yeah, it's good. I mean, it's it's
(44:38):
like any to me. You have to just yeah, nobody's
ever gonna be It's like people who it's like looking
at college basketball. You just have to think of it
in a different way the guy because the athlete, the
women athletes, obviously they're not going to be as as
strong and fast and jump as high as NBA athletes
because those are the best basketball players in the planet.
But they are hitting their hitting jump shots, they're not
(45:00):
bricking as many because look, the NBA can brick them too.
I mean, there's no question. I'll tell you the one
sport that I am watching a little bit this weekend
that I was like, this is not good. College baseball
is not really good. Again, you can, you can enjoy
college baseball, but you kind of just have to look
at it realistic expectations exactly. They're gonna miss. Uh, you know,
(45:20):
they're they're not gonna the exit velos aren't gonna be
as high even with the aluminum bats. They're gonna miss
a lot of pitches. The pitching is just not anywhere
as close as close. I mean, look, the Astros pitching
isn't even any good. They're all better than college pitchers
for the most part. Yeah, So that's just what I
did this weekend because again, I'm trying to get over
whatever I got going on in my life right now,
(45:40):
which I'm hopefully gonna fix letter this week, but it's
to me w NBA wasn't as bad. Uh. I will
watch soccer. I can't get into because that's just it's
just hard for me. But I think when we get
closer to World Cup, all of us will be because
it's just a once in a four year event and
it's gonna it's in a country, and it's gonna have huge,
(46:01):
huge ratings and a lot of conversations about that. The
UFL remains awful. The college baseball I tried. I watched
Texas Tennessee yesterday. Texas had a four to nothing lean
the first inn and gave it up and I mean
in a millisecond, just it just wasn't good. It was
like watching not batting practice for ross, but there was
(46:25):
no definition to really good pitching, and a little bit
of bats will let you make mistakes. And even if
you don'thit the ball square, or you hit up the
end of the bat, or you hit it off the
fist or whatever, you still got a tremendous pop to it.
I was just looking up w NBA points per game
average first year ninety seven, it sixty nine and seventy
(46:47):
sixty eight points per game the last year eighty last
two years basically eighty two points per game. So it's
scoring zone. Yeah, and it's not because defense takes a
step back. I think the shooting has gotten better. We've
got we've got ladies that are shoot you know, in
the WNBA, if you're shooting thirty five percent from three,
that's that's considered excellent. Yeah. I think it's also a
higher pace game as well, higher pace game, shootings up,
(47:08):
percentages up a little bit, like forty one, forty two percent.
Now it's around forty four percent. So that was today's
edition of not on my long guy. Yeah, that was
getting I was getting off of somebody else's long. You're
letting people on your line. I was letting people on
my lawn. That's good. I'm proud of you, Matt.
Speaker 3 (47:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (47:24):
Well again, it just wasn't a lot to watch, and
the Asters weren't doing much. So what was I supposed
to do? True? What was I supposed to do? Gotta
keep I gotta keep the sports of love alive here,
even if some of the World Cup's coming for you. Maddie, Eh,
let's put you, Let's get you to the World Cup pool.
It's the crazy thing is that people that are diehard
World Cup fans are complaining about the ticket prices. Well, yeah,
(47:48):
everybody hates a. FIFA is like, we don't care. Yeah,
people who love the tournament in college basketball, they hate
NC double A yeah, or even college baseball, football, for
college anything. Everybody hates the NC double A things you
FIFA is the things you won't hear. Oh, I got
tickets to see Notre Dame versus Miami in the second
round of the tournament game the Football Playoffs CFP. All
these prices, they are very affordable. Ever, I think I'll
(48:10):
buy a section for a party. No jam on seven?
Are James in klin on seven on e? James? What
do you got?
Speaker 10 (48:19):
Yeah? The problem is the whole city and surrounding area
has been under a curse. And it goes back to
when the Longhorns didn't make the playoffs, the Aggies lost
in the I mean yeah, the Aggie's lost terribly in
their playoff game, the Tecans lost in their playoff game,
the Rockets lost, the Tuglas basketball team only make the
Sweet sixteen. And the problem is we need to find
(48:39):
a slumbuster. I mean, we could go out and try
to find some poon tang for tang. But that's not
gonna get it done. You already tried to do the
Japanese sixth thing. That's not gonna work. We need to
find a slumbuster and get this curse done and over with.
That's all I got.
Speaker 3 (48:58):
Okay, I have no.
Speaker 1 (49:01):
Idea what to tell you?
Speaker 3 (49:01):
Sing?
Speaker 1 (49:02):
Thanks Jim. Well, he wanted Kaywa Tane to get a
slumpbuster too, since you wanted em to get one, even
though he's happily married.
Speaker 5 (49:10):
I am.
Speaker 1 (49:11):
I am not endorsing a good emi getting a slumpbuster.
Speaker 3 (49:15):
Are you sure.
Speaker 1 (49:17):
That's all you could talk about last week? Well, I
didn't realize he was twenty seven with a kid around
the way. It's not I mean, because yeah, you wanted
him to she on his pregnant wife is what you're
asking for? His wife was listening to the show. I
felt terrible. Yeah, well maybe she is trying to learn
English listening to radio talk radio to help ten to
(49:39):
two mid days on summers. That's what we do with.
That's we're trying to get to. Can you get live
translations on the iHeart app? I don't know. Well, you
you should do. Isn't there a Google app? You can
just hit there's a transcription they do on the I
know for sure on Spotify they do it. Yeah. That's
of course, as a lot of time it's inaccurate because
we don't always enunciate word good. They don't like our slang.
Speaker 7 (50:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (50:02):
Yeah, when you're talking about Tatsumi, Saftige, Hookers Safty, just
text me. I'm going on their show tomorrow at six o'clock.
Oh you are for what? They're gonna better talk. Yeah,
they're gonna They're gonna beat your ass. They're gonna beat
my ass. They got the reigning world champs in football,
and the Mariners are not very good, but they're better
than the Astros. They're gonna drop a Disastros on you,
(50:25):
and you're gonna hear about uh yeah, you're gonna hear
about cheating and trash cans and how the Rockets lost
in the first round. I don't want Why don't want
any of that? What is wrong with you? Why am I?
Why am I a recipe for disaster? I don't know?
Astros didn't score yesterday? Ross is that bad? It's not
How many games never won a game where you haven't
(50:46):
scored at least a run, unprecedented in major League history.
Yet it's Joe Spot's fault. They scored zero runs. How
we feel about the hitting coaches, They're having a bad
couple of weeks, rough couple of days of the hitting coaches. Altuve, Perettes,
and Salas are three singles yesterday. That's it. You know
(51:08):
what I think without creating no maybe we can do
in the next segment we needed what is the long
term outlook for this offense? Okay, because I think we've
got to go to some individual people, right, yes, all right,
we'll do that coming back eleven thirteen on Sports Talk
seven ninety seven one three two one two five seven
ninety seven one three two one two five seven ninety
(51:30):
eleven seventeen is our time. It is Matten Ross with
you on Sports Talk seven ninety seven one three two
one two five seven nine zero seven one three two
one two five seven ninety So here is the God's
honest truth about this. When there are athletes that we
deal with that we don't like, we revel in their
(51:53):
misfortune schadenfreude. Uh. But there are athletes that we generally
like that we want them to succeed, and I would
say most of them, speaking honestly, are guys wearing the
word Houston or Astrosorus Texans are rocks across our chests. Guys.
(52:14):
We get to interview guys who are good, nice, Like
rooting for Christian Walker, he was great. Yeah, rooting for Spence.
I'm glad he's bouncing back. Well, he's been slowing down
a little bit. But he wasn't gonna hit three hundred
all year. I mean, he just wasn't. Spencer Arraghetty always
a great interview, so nice. It's Zach Cole is a
one nice young man. Oh my god, he's too that
(52:35):
Cole's too nice. He's like, bless you guys. Yeah, I'm
praying for you guys. Yeah, I mean thank you, Zach.
Speaker 11 (52:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (52:40):
I mean, lord, if anybody needs purs us. So we're
frankly folks, and this is speaking God's untruly when it
comes to the Astros. Look, the Rockets have won for
the last two or three years. We don't deal with
a lot of it. I mean I deal with them
because I travel with them, but I don't. We don't
do a lot of kibbutzing with him, so to speak.
(53:02):
We have no relationship with all of the Texans, and
that's fine. That's that's the situation they've dealt in and whatever.
But I mean there's still a whole local team.
Speaker 9 (53:09):
C J.
Speaker 1 (53:10):
Strot is an utterly likable guy. Will Anderson utterly likable.
Derek Stingly are the likeable. I mean, they're Jalen Peatree.
I mean they're there. I mean the only guy that's
was kind of salty was Joe Mixing. No, he didn't
do that. Matt, where is my pastry? I want to
(53:30):
coon him on in his cold brew. You know, I
feel like I've embellished this so much. Take as Okay,
so we don't have a lot of putts Is around here, Okay,
I can probably in the city the Houston sports teams,
I can probably name the putts Is on one hand
and maybe have a couple of fingers to spare. So
(53:52):
it's hard for us to come on a radio show
and say, man, I like this guy, but but I
feel like Ross, we're in a position where we're I
like this guy, but you're talking about some of the
hitting woes. Uh huh. You're gonna start with the leadoff guy.
I love Jose Altuve literally, I am no relationship with
(54:15):
him and all except to being just a fanboy his
for the last fifteen years. Super nice. We've interviewed him
several times. Yeah, get him in FanFest. Always super nice,
always super nice. He always signs autographs, does charity work.
We had him on when I was a producer. He
was like, hey, how are you doing. I was like, what, Yeah,
I'll put you on put you on hold, Jose, But
(54:36):
you you don't want to. You don't want your leadoff guy.
Not granted he was not batting leadoff because until the
Carlos Cray injuries happened. But you don't want your leadoff
guy with an OPS seven oh two. He's a he's
in a major, major slump right now. Yeah, I'll give
you the OPS plus is two while we're here. League
average one hundred. He's at ninety six. So not a
(54:57):
guy that you want playing as getting the extra ab
per se. I got better examples for Unfortunately, we love
cam Smith. I mean you cannot root hard enough for
cam Smith. Cam Smith's OPS has dropped to six p
forty two. He is now you can somewhat live with
(55:18):
seven hundred to the top air lineup, but the heart
of your order, your run producer, your number five hitter,
six hitter ROSSI Cam Smith, ops, can you cannot continue
to win. That's why I'm saying if Cam Smith was
striking out and ground hitting ground balls and lazy fly
balls despite Joe Espada, it'd be one thing. And then
(55:42):
he's like, if I get Omar Opez to run this team,
my OPS is gonna jump one hundred points. Probably not
OPS plus of eighty. That's bad. That's that's real bad.
That hurts because Cam Smith is a first round pick
you traded, You traded Kyle Tucker and got would you
I thought was a steal of a first round pick
of the Cubs the previous year. He's not a professional.
(56:05):
He's not a major league hitter right now. You can't
six forty two, shouldn't be playing six days a week.
He had that little run where he was doing so well.
If not for Jordan, if not for Christian Walker, where
would this offense be right now? Well, I think the
(56:27):
selling that this offense has kind of carried its weight
so far hasn't been necessarily true. The last week or so,
got beat up bad by the Red by the Dodgers twice,
and you got shut out and scored what one run
in two games against Cincinnati. Yeah, eighth and runs per game.
But he scored one run in the last Cup. That's
(56:48):
out of fifteen. That's the middle of the pack. No,
I'm sorry, eighth out of thirty. Oh well that's that's
upper third. Yeah, it's still better, but it was. You know,
they were top they were top two for a while,
and unfortunately things are are coming a little bit back
down to earth. You're hoping, especially like in the case
of camp Smith, that that he would at least be
(57:09):
able to hold his own. You're just asking for some
of these guys one hundred hundred and five one to
t ops plus and then crazy al Tuovey has got
to be better, and we didn't get the call. There
was a caller on hold earlier was saying like he
needed to retire or something like that. But he's thirty
six years old and unfortunately the decline is happening. But
(57:32):
he can be better than this. Everybody's got it, including himself.
He's he can, he knows he can be better than this.
And then going back to the more macro issues of this,
this is where the injuries kick in. Jan Air Diez
for everybody that wants to hate on him much more
of a professional hitter. You will you would take your
DS slash Vasquez combination. Yes, salas are salas Are just
(57:58):
can't sala I mean sal I thought he had the
job a week before the start of the season and
they said, well, Christia Vesquez, are you in the weed somewhere,
let's go get you. I forgot that you could have
a negative ops plus his negative six. I forgot that
was possible till just now. I can't remember who it
(58:19):
was the last couple of years that did it. I
think it might have been now. Zach Coles got pop, yes,
but does that pop get covered up by the amount
of strikeouts that he has, unfortunately had in his young
major league career. Two more he went over to yesterday
with two strikeouts. The reason why Zach Cole has not
been a major leaguer for a long period time is
because his swinging miss rate is exceptionally high. Hey, what's
(58:41):
going on with Jake Myers' Where's what's going on with
liw Brafito?
Speaker 6 (58:45):
Not a word?
Speaker 1 (58:46):
Let's go yeah? And Nick Allen, God love him, but
he's not Mauricio Duban as even as light hitting as
Mauricio Dubon would have regressed to over the course of
the year. It's crazy to say out loud, yeah, you
know you wish he could. You never thought you'd say, man,
I wish this guy could hit as much as Mauricio
Dubon things that would on this radio show. Okay, So,
(59:15):
so where does this offense end up? Do you think
worse than where they are now? Eighth and runs per game.
I'll try to pull up that. I don't think you can.
Even though Korea's numbers he had steadily fallen in the
last couple of years. He was good. He's been good.
His OPS plus is one twenty. But you remember he
was also he was having a good season, not great,
but good. He was also a top four hitter. For
(59:37):
you're you're taking away four abs from your top four
hitter and giving three abs to one of your worst hitters.
That is a I don't know how you can measure that,
but that sounds like to me a serious regression. Yeah,
(59:57):
Nick Allen's OPS is five point fifteen, probably gonna stay
that way, and unless that cole strike out numbers reduce
and gets on base more, his OPS is gonna struggle
the way because he's gonad home runs. He's gonna strike
on and that's gonna even itself out. So they're fifth
and team ops, that's great, eighth and runs pretty good.
(01:00:18):
But why does it feel so much worse because of
the hot start? Because because these injuries have just popped up. Yeah,
and we're watching what we just saw this weekend. This
is just this weekend was nothing and camp Smith man, Rossie,
you do we not want to wish good things to
a guy like that? I think. I think if we're
looking for places to where you could see some improvement,
(01:00:40):
camp Smith is definitely one of the wells you would
hope to be able to go to. He's got to
be better than two twelve batting average. He's playing every day,
and he made a defensive miske you on Saturday which
exacerbated things as well. Two runs of score. So your
dun's finally healthy at this point. He's play was it
(01:01:00):
forty eight games last year or fifty at forty eight?
I think? Oh, and so he's already at forty one
games and it's gonna be Yeah, he played forty eight
games last year, He's already played forty one this year. Hope, yah,
I think, thank god, you feel like but it's also
(01:01:23):
like wasting, you're wasting a season, you're not Are you
gonna bring up trade conversation with him now? I don't
think so. People have talked about that he's under he's
on the best contract probably in baseball in terms of
guys who are out of arbitration, and he's young enough
to where when you're good again and can if if
you completely wanted to blow it up, you would figure
(01:01:45):
he would still be here when you want to contend again,
you would want to contend again with jord On Alvarez
in the can I give you a generic take on
this if you're going to trade Jordan, which I don't
believe they're going to, But again, it takes one opinion,
not ours, when you want your general manager to make
that one move, when you want new general manager the
(01:02:06):
new general manager. Yeah, I think anything's on the table,
depending on how this offseason goes. But I think you
would trade one of Hunter Brown or Pinya, probably Christian
Walker and then try to retool and rebuild from there.
And if Jordon is to me untouchable, say, even if
you're gonna get a crop of like three good prospects,
(01:02:26):
tell me and I'm gonna play devil's advocate for you
just on this because I don't know, I don't disagree
with your take, but just to throw the other thing
at you. If you're gonna move everybody out, if you're
really gonna go wholesale changes, what's the point of keeping
everybody getting rid of everybody except one star player? Don't
you have them for two more years under the Yeah,
you have him for this year and two more years
(01:02:47):
when you then get a complete haul. When you think,
because the dollar around is golf guys, that are you
hoping one of them is half as good as Jordan Alvarez?
I know again I'm on your sign is one of
the most I mean, devastating hitters on the planet. I'm
not saying it. First of all, I'm not saying it's crazy,
but you'd have to get the You'd have to get
the whole of like the you'd have to get the
(01:03:08):
mother load in front in front. To me, I would
want mine the new general manager making. That's why I
really don't believe that Jordan Alvaret is being trucked. You
have him for two more years at twenty seven million dollars.
That is an absolute steal, all right? Tell the truth
is up next, Guys, I do know how to tell
(01:03:49):
the truth. But we're watching some video here. Bobby Cox
may rest past over the weekend. He is the best
getting his ass kicked out of a game. I mean,
Earl Weaver did it back in the eighties, but Bobby
Cox beats him. Bobby Cox would get blue. Penela was
good too. When Bobby Cox got thrown out of a game,
he really got thrown out of the game. He got
(01:04:11):
his money's worse. Yeah worth John than I have four takes.
I only believe one of them. Which three I have
three that I'm not telling the truth. All right, Okay,
you're looking for one truth and three loves? Really, Yeah,
that's the hard way. I did to go the hard
way to this. Yeah, because I wanted y'all get y'all
(01:04:31):
got mad at me for my journey take. So I
want did they step up its get mad at you?
I mean you gready killed it, kill it.
Speaker 3 (01:04:39):
I mean.
Speaker 1 (01:04:41):
It's funny because I did go to social media see
in my good punished for my journey tank, and nobody
said anything. So that's not true. Let's see. I just
think they know who Matt Thomas is. At this point,
Pedro said, Bro said five minutes of nothing.
Speaker 11 (01:04:55):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:04:55):
Rolando said, Matt eats dessert before dinner. A it's I
can afford deserve Orlando. All right, here we go. Nice
one whatever, Ernando, you could suck it. I ain't even
a mood for you. What it's from an hour ago?
You said, nobody said anything? Use two?
Speaker 3 (01:05:14):
I win?
Speaker 1 (01:05:15):
All right, here we go three, three falsities, one truth
toy Okay. Number one. I watched all that Wolves Spurs
game yesterday. Guys, Anthony Edwards is amazing. He's so amazing
(01:05:35):
at seventy percent, he's beaten up on the San Antonio Spurs.
I gotta change my tune. I think the Wolves are
pulling off the upset. I really do. I mean, my gosh,
go Bear was great, Naz Reid was great. They're doing
it without Dante DiVincenzo. Dante DiVincenzo. Wolves go to San Antonio,
(01:05:59):
win and win. Wow, it's over in six okay, okay.
Number two. If things go awry this week Seattle and
Texas you mean and the Astros, Yeah, I think changes
are coming this week. This week, what do you mean?
(01:06:21):
I think they're gonna shut the door and they're gonna
say we are going to fall for falling further and
further behind. We had seven games in the division. It's
not fair. But changes are coming, and we're calling up
miguelu Yola. No, I don't think you mean you know
what I mean. You mean Joe spot Of gone, Dana
Brown gone, both the one I think we're gonna get
either a front office or managerial change. It's just just
(01:06:45):
in the Seattle series or this week, this week, okay,
like a one in six week could and they're like
eight or nine out something like that, and there's a
little gray area there on. That one feels very gray.
I get to the I think you guys get it.
Number three's right. I never thought I would say this,
But because the Rockets are done, the spring sports are
(01:07:08):
not doing it much for me. I'll watch a little WNBA.
The Astros are obviously struggling. I'm struggling. I'm actually kind
of excited about the NFL schedule, least on Thursday. Okay,
I never thought I would say that. He chuckled over. Therefore,
(01:07:32):
and number four, there's a lot of names being brought
up in Rocket future trade talks. Okay, there's one name
that I would actually listen to, not saying that. I
wouldn't fully indorse it, but I could be compelled to
see if the Rockets would want to make a move
on Donovan Mitchell from Cleveland. If they made the move, okay, okay,
(01:07:54):
depending on the price, depending on the price. But Donald Mitchell,
to me, even though he's had a lack of postseason success,
intrigues me. He's had some good playoff games. So which
one of the four do I believe? Boys one the
Wolves fall off the uposete and win the series of
the Spurs. I think changes are coming this week if
the Astros really goes south of the Mariners and Rangers.
(01:08:16):
I'm excited for the first time the NFL schedule release
or number four. I think the Rockets should kick the
tires and Donovan Mitchell if the Cabs want to trade him.
Which one of the four? Am I telling you the truth?
I don't look how you feeling, Johnathan. I believe the
Wolves are gotta do it in six, but I don't
think Matt stir underdog.
Speaker 4 (01:08:37):
I don't think Matt believes that it wouldn't got injected.
I think there's still, you know, some room for doubt.
So I'm not not really filling out one that full
number one.
Speaker 3 (01:08:45):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (01:08:46):
I still think the Spurs and the thunder arm and
collision course, and I still think Matt believes that it's
a three game series of two left in San Antonio.
I think they're gonna win. I think Mann believes that
too changes in the Astros. It could happen.
Speaker 6 (01:09:04):
I mean.
Speaker 1 (01:09:06):
That that's a great area. There's no way he's excited
about the I would be completely shocked if he's actually
excited about the NFL schedule release. If that's the truth,
I'm gonna take it down beside. I feel like it
could be two or four. I'm gonna roll with number four,
(01:09:29):
all right, Matt, I'm going with two.
Speaker 4 (01:09:32):
I think I think the Ashes are bumming you out
a little bit, and you're trying to you're hoping for
a little bit of change.
Speaker 1 (01:09:37):
Number one, Uh, you're a complete dorcasaurus. If you are
a scheduled about the you're excited about the NFL schedule release.
If you won't because of the schedule, test games gonna
be on the national schedule. Job three? Do you you
are a dork? If you are getting into a deep
dive on NFL schedule release, You're a dork. That was
(01:09:59):
easy when that was a litt of hanging for it there.
Number two. I am impressed with the Wolves, but Spurs
is just starting with that series. Okay. I mean that
game last night changed a lot because of Victor Wemanghas
was discuss you gotta me saying it now.
Speaker 3 (01:10:12):
I like it.
Speaker 6 (01:10:13):
I like it. M M.
Speaker 1 (01:10:19):
God, John, and I'm sorry, I.
Speaker 3 (01:10:25):
Can't this.
Speaker 1 (01:10:26):
These are opinions. I don't think the I don't think
Jim Crane's gonna let somebody go this week. Just after
this week. I think it would be a little further
down the road. You know, I'm not mad at this
because that's that was hard because they really could. But
now there'll be people crying for it. I thought this
was really easy, Johnathan, I didn't want to say anything.
So yeah, even though Donovan mitchells don't want to let
you get it wrong first, I don't. Even though Donovan
(01:10:49):
Mitchell's I had a lot of success in the NBA playoffs,
we did a Utah or Cleveland, he still fills up
the statue. And again, John and I do have advantages.
Men could not keep a straight face on the schedule release.
You know from now on. I was like, you won't
get the texts by the Jaguars leave the room next time. Yeah,
(01:11:10):
I'm gonna turn my face and I just can't do it.
I can't look at you seriously coming here. And that's
actually that's actually fair. It's not ber point. I do
have an inherent advantage, Yes I do. I'm not mad
at this one. I mean, look, the schedule lease is
coming out Thursday, and everybody's been talking about this Jaguars
Texans game in London. So what if you're gonna go,
(01:11:32):
then go, But who cares when who plays? When you
want to go to London? They always do with the
leaking stuff too. Yeah, stop leaking. Pause, it's you know what,
you know what this the ind NFL schedule leaking is like,
it's like Finny getting getting a gift on Christmas Eve.
Get everything on Christmas Day and call call it a
(01:11:53):
Day's the easy one. It is controversial, it is. I'm
with you, though, it's a half step. Just wait. It
would just wake your ass up and Christmas morning, like
everybody else, get back in the day. Yes, nobody in
nineteen sixty six was doing one. President Christmas, please open
up at president on Christmas Eve. No, shut up, It's
(01:12:13):
called Christmas Day for a reason. Yeah, and get my
second hand mint all smoke. Seriously my Twitter for you
tab which is not people I follow. Here's the problem
with the fourth the schedule release of They're putting out
wrong information left and right. Some I could put out
(01:12:33):
a schedule release. You should. Are you gonna do the eye?
Oh I am ojis it got you a lot of
last night? Didn't you get a lot of followers out
of it last time? I want to do it right now?
Healing Week one could be an AFC apost the text
NFC pone and on week number one this Christmas guz Ever,
(01:12:56):
what three D won't do vibes every day?
Speaker 3 (01:12:58):
Will we?
Speaker 1 (01:12:58):
When is the schedule? When is this jor reveal? Thursday? Thursday? Okay,
so you know we we do need a gut feeling
then tomorrow? How many? How many prime time games? I
could see it going in either direction? You been around
four to five the last couple O were they a
standalone games? Matt because you got all upset last year
about that?
Speaker 4 (01:13:18):
Oh Ross, You need to do your little gut feelings
real quick, because you want to hear last Tuesdays.
Speaker 1 (01:13:22):
Okay, give us you a little what's your think for
what is your gut feeling that you would you would
have like for today? Uh? Who's wait? Who's on the
hill for the Astros again? What do you mean about this?
Peter Lambert read that? What do you think? What my tweet?
Wow Texas schedule with the eye emojis? I don't know.
That's probably not good enough. That's not good enough to
(01:13:43):
get any run? Well, what I mean Mike riding quality
star from Peter Lambert? Why not?
Speaker 3 (01:13:50):
You know what?
Speaker 1 (01:13:51):
Astros upset the Mariners today? Peter Lambert versus George Kirby.
George Kirby has been there, kryptonite. M he did truth? Yeah, Jonathan,
you're getting your ask. Come to tell the truth.
Speaker 3 (01:14:06):
Now.
Speaker 1 (01:14:07):
It's not even close. Now we've had a couple of
ties in there. So but from now on, from here
on out, every Monday, I'm gonna turn to the side
so he doesn't see me because I could not keep
a straight facing the schedule. Least that was easy.
Speaker 6 (01:14:18):
Though.
Speaker 1 (01:14:20):
You are thinking my time of Mitchell.
Speaker 3 (01:14:21):
You like him? I like him.
Speaker 1 (01:14:22):
I'd take him. He's ahead him. Yeah, I I he's
been he's had a lot of great playoff games. By
the way, our our friend uh who called the show
on Friday, willow Oh he senta tweet willing about James Harden. Now, okay,
game three, Lottie freaking die. Let's see what you do
in game seven or how about in a seven game series?
(01:14:43):
He's also he's pat well past his prime. Who would
you get for Mitchell though? I don't even know if
they would really, I don't think. I don't know that
they would be interested in Alpie over there Cleveland. No,
you don't need him because you have Jared Allen, so yeah,
but I mean it's Jared Allen Evan. Pairing him with
(01:15:04):
Evan Mobley would be interesting, I guess, because it would
be I would shore up with some of the alprin
Chingoon's defensive deficiencies. But then you're going double big, which
is kind of rare these days. But they do it
with Jared Allen. But you have to give more than
Shangoon to get Mitchell. That, Yeah, it would be like Shangoon.
I don't even know. They probably wouldn't want Jabbari as well. Yeah,
our buddy Aaron by the way, on the Spurs is
announced Wimby will not be suspended for game four, So
(01:15:27):
I think that's the right move. Yeah, you got to games, Yeah, yeah, yeah,
all right, that's to tell the truth of the day
and Johnson's deficit. Are you still leaving? You know it's
seven three? Oh my god, it's done. It's time. It's
time for like a hiatus for you, maybe too, Rossie's
a vacation for you to catch up. Uh yeah, let's see.
I got some coming up end of the month, all right,
(01:15:48):
I see you later. Eleven forty eight on Sports Talk
seven ninety seven one three two one two five seven
ninety seven one three two one two five seven eleven
forty eight Sports Talk seven ninety So far ross my
wow eyes textans schedule tweet doing quite well. Yes, God,
(01:16:10):
that's pretty funny. Uh again, everybody's I guess reporting. There's
one website apparently it's more accurate than others that says
the Texas are going to play in the Jaguars in
Jacksonville and in London. Excuse me, you're gonna go. You
know what's funny. We brought this up the Thomas family,
(01:16:32):
the boy actually the boys. We're gonna go next late
August early September, to London. Cameron wants to go see
his beloved Tottenham hot and Hotspring. He wants to go
see somebody else play to liver in Liverpool. I don't
know who it is. Peyton and I want to school Everton.
I don't know, probably Liverpool, Peyton and I want to
(01:16:54):
go to the Beatles thing. So we've made an executive
decision that in fifteen months we're going this. Three of
us are going. London is one of the most expensive
places to go right now in the world. I don't
know why it is. Hotels are really expensive, is expensive,
the cost of jet fuel is making the air Fraer
Canada bake beans. You're good, that's true. That is true.
(01:17:17):
So uh yeah, fifteen months from now we're gonna go mmmmm.
And you don't believe me, That's fine. I can't. I
can't accept That's what I'm believing you more than than others.
But also it just started. Man, didn't you say last
summer that you're going to Hawaii? This? I know, yeah
he did. Yeah, because but the problem is we may
also made some decisions. We're getting an airbnb in Rhode Island.
(01:17:40):
We didn't know we're going to do that. Go to
go weekend in kankun We're gonna go to Galveston, Sir,
we are laughing Ross because he hates Galveston. True, No,
I love Gallus. Let me take some Galvezon. I love
(01:18:00):
its history of pirates and pirate ships and war, civil
war and disgusting dirty brown water. But I mean, yeah,
it's it's not brown and great it's not brown. It's
not Are you insane? Sometimes it's blue, you know. Let
(01:18:20):
me tell you when comes through it's blue for a
couple of days. Yes, mister Texas loves all the state
and I love I love going on. I feel you know,
the best part of Galveston is no, you feel like
you're down there and you're in a different war, different world.
You like you're in a war zone. Yeah, oh my god,
(01:18:42):
rough like Galveston's sick of Okay, come on now, I
love Galveson too. For what it is, it's an hour away.
You need a beach, you got it. It's like you
have been telling me to get away for a couple
of days, nothing of beaches. So I'm gonna go do
that for a couple of days in June. I think,
and when you get soon after you come back from
(01:19:02):
whatever you're doing, so it's convenient and it gets the
job done. The Burger King of Beaches, by the way,
I've had a whopper from Burger King lately. Yeah, it's good. Really,
it's I think whatever they're doing, it's better. They're stepping
their game up. Well, first of their advertising is spending. No,
you got rid of that dork that sings now, I'm
(01:19:23):
gonna grab some onion rings beak. Okay, have it your
catchy tune. They just kind of ran it into the
ground now it's it's looking everybody's said, that's called good advertising. No,
but I mean they Burger King went to the old
logo back in the seventies, logo, the whopper is still
I'm gonna give me a whopper on the way home today.
(01:19:44):
You don't mean a dropper whatever. That's why they don't
spend money with us, do they. I don't know if
they do. They might. I know that tequila that mcconnie's paying.
Can we go back to the central point. Yes, I
told you get everybody's gonna play. Everybody's everybody's gonna play
in the National Games. Oh that we're talking about you relaxing? No, No, no,
everybody' gonna play a national game. You spend a weekend
in goveson I think so, I think, yeah, gay Myth's
(01:20:07):
dow four day weekend. Yeah, like a Thursday Friday. Won't
be anything. Don't be running around. I'm going to Dolphin tours.
Don't go on and see Lafitte's boat or whatever. You
see a lot of black Beard's boat whatever. They get
down there. We play put putt, absolutely love putt putt
and galve.
Speaker 6 (01:20:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:20:24):
Batting cages m hm oh, I would go to battle.
Love a video of you swinging at the batting cages.
Speaker 1 (01:20:31):
I can make contact.
Speaker 4 (01:20:33):
Put it on slow pitch. It's gotta be at least fifty.
You can't do anything loading that correct.
Speaker 1 (01:20:39):
I want to hit. I don't want to go there
and swinging mess. Who wants who goes to the batting
cages of swinging miss? Better bring your gloves. Well, that's true.
Your hands are gonna be ruined. Yeah, that's true. You
get golf gloves if you have those wrist brace too.
Oh right, that's enough. Yeah, what do I mean? Bring
my walker out there too?
Speaker 3 (01:20:56):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (01:20:56):
Shut up, both of you. Get you one of those
like the cages on the mass just in case I'm
trying to keep it sports. See, I need people to
talk sports with me.
Speaker 3 (01:21:05):
Please.
Speaker 1 (01:21:05):
The news at noon coming up with a lot of
big time sports news, folks. I want to hear from
those of you that want to talk sports with me,
including how awesome Galvezon is to hang out for a
couple of days, including if you're making your planes to
go see the Texans play in London. By the way,
the reason why I would want to go see them
play is because these stadiums, these new Wembley's spectacular. Yeah,
(01:21:30):
these soccer stadiums, these are all look like the majestic
brand new facilites have just opened up. I think those
are nice and cool. Yeah, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is a
new Yeah, used to be on a white hart Ling
or something like that. And I want to go walk
Abbey Road. I want to us gonna take the picture right,
Oh absolutely, that's absolutely my one foot in front of
(01:21:54):
the other. The other three members of my family will
have their one foot in front of the things. Say
Matt is dead, you know something about Paulton Sergeant Pepper's No,
that was that's when they're on Ivy Road. Oh, eleven
fifty eight on Sports Talk seven NINTI. The News at
Noon is next is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross
(01:22:22):
twelve o three Sports Talk seven NINTI. It is Matt,
it is Ross. We are with you today until two o'clock,
where Ross is promising us a complete, in depth breakdown
of the Astros Reds game from Sunday. We present to
you the News at noon. All right, Matt. First up
(01:22:42):
on the News at noon, we will play the highlights
of all the runs scored by the Astros yesterday. Play
something good from the game. Was there a defensive player
or something? Maybe a strike? That was all the runs
scored by the Astros yesterday? Zero? Oh? How many games
has anybody won in Major League Baseball history scoring zero runs? Matt,
(01:23:06):
don't ask a Joe Spot a hater? Zero? Well, it
was Joe Spot his fault. He loved Ky waiting in
there too long? Sure?
Speaker 3 (01:23:14):
Why not?
Speaker 1 (01:23:14):
I don't know. Then you went to aj blue Ball
and Cody Bolton, Jaden Murray and Logan Van Why hell?
Logan Man? Why he invented the steam engine in eighteen
sixty six? Or he pitched a scoreless inning for the
Astros yesterday? They lost two out of three of the Reds.
(01:23:34):
Friday was great, ten to nothing. I did the post game,
took a few calls. We're like, hey, maybe they're turning
the corner. Mike Burrows with a quality start, plus you
got home runs from Cole and de Zenzo and Jordan.
Feeling good in the neighborhood. And then Saturday happened where
unfortunately you ran into the Chase Burns buzzsaw by the Reds.
(01:23:58):
Arraghetty solid enough, three runs, only one of them earned
in five and two thirds. And then yesterday, unfortunately you
score a combined two runs in the last excuse me,
one run in the last two games. I should say,
Matthew Astros five and a half games back of the
A's in the American League West. How are we feeling?
(01:24:21):
I want to throw back at you, how how important
is this week? Because I said it wasn't gonna be
a decision making week, but you're five and a half
out now if it drops to seven, do you start
thinking about roster moves? Do you start thinking about taking
phone call? When Hunner Brown coming back, We got transferred
(01:24:44):
to the sixty day Disabled US over the weekend. He
also did through a bully right yeah, but he's he's
ramping up like it's a start of spring training again,
which is okay. Let me can I can I a
whole judgment until I I mean, I guess one year,
once start of hot, you're gonna swing the whole season.
But I mean, I feel a lot better. He had
(01:25:05):
that one good starting Sacramento was like six innings of
shutout ball or whatever it was. Look at the backwards slider.
He's the best ever. And then all of a sudden,
his arm's hurting everything, he's complaining about everything. I don't know. Man,
Hopefully he goes out there and he's good, and I
would feel lot better because I'm feeling pretty good about
Mike Burrows', feeling pretty good about Spencer Raghetty. It's feeling
(01:25:26):
pretty good about Peter Lambert. We'll get we'll get an
eye on him tonight. Okay, So can you hold here's
the question. Can you hold your head above water with
three fists your starting rotation giving you professional performances. Let's go.
I know you're IM hater number one.
Speaker 6 (01:25:47):
No I'm not.
Speaker 1 (01:25:48):
I mean, IM I realist number one. Sack up. That's
what I'm asking for him. He is saying Hey, well
they're throwing him out there. Tomorrow's got feelings. This is
gonna be very important for us. I've got a good guy.
I got a good feeling about this. Jon feeling about it.
We're all doing tomorrow. We're all doing it. We also
(01:26:09):
need to do how many schedule release coming out Thursday?
How many primetime games? We need to lay that down
tomorrow to everybody. Remember, we're all holding everybody accountable. We
all have bad memories. Well, Jonathan's the best because he's
the youngest in time. I saw he might it was
his first outing. Don't worry about it. He's gonna be better.
We'll talk about tomorrow all right. Elsewhere in the news
(01:26:30):
at noon, Victor Wamba Yama will not be suspended for
Game number five for his elbow to nas read above
the neck. He was ejected in Game number four, which
in Minnesota Timberwolves went on to win. ESPN's Sham Sharania
saying the NBA is saying that is enough punishment. He
(01:26:51):
will not be suspended for a game in the pivotal
Game five, as the series is tied two to two.
It's funny because he what he did was very intentional. Yes,
what he did was an easy penalty, two easy? So
what would he have had to have done to get
a further suspension? Step on him? Kick him in the
(01:27:13):
Nats really like in again, left elbow and then a
right elbow and then an elbow again. Drop on the head. Yeah, okay,
I see how you go on that. I got you.
Pistons and Cavaliers in action tonight with Detroit leading that
series two to one, calves three and a half point favorites.
In that game, We'll see how James Harden does. This
will be the largest home underdog line for Lebron James's career.
(01:27:38):
They are eleven and a half point dogs at home
the Los Angeles Lakers. Matthew down three to nothing in
the series. I'm calling it Oklahoma. Then he finishes them off. Yeah.
By the way, I want to ask you, do you
think the eleven and a half point favorites is gonna win?
I don't care about Vegas is. I'm just watching the series. Yeah,
I agree with you. I think the thunder are better
than the Lakers. They will win the series. All right,
(01:28:02):
Matt what were you gonna say?
Speaker 7 (01:28:04):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (01:28:05):
There are people complaining that what should should the NBA do?
To make this culture. If one team is better than
the other, Oklahoma City has no need to try to
extend a series. The Knicks have no need to extend
the series. In Philadelphia, if one team is better than
the other, them's the breaks. The NBA can't do thing
about that. Yeah, ridiculous. Second round is usually a little
(01:28:26):
bit more thrilling than it has been, but it is
what it is. Matthew. Have you seen the story from
Sham Sharani of the Bucks are seeking the trade offers
quote they are open for business on trade calls and
offers for two time mvp AA, the Goombo entering the
NBA Draft combine in over six weeks away from the
(01:28:47):
durraft is recording that Shams is yes. And did you
see that the Wizards are willing to listen to people
for the number one overall pick in the draft? Hmmm,
healing are supposed to be a U smashing draft. It
is a smashing draft. Tintsing, Who's a consistence number one?
I think it's Aj Devantsa, that's the BUYU. Yeah yeah,
(01:29:09):
I thought it was him. Uh yeah, to look at
the draft board, I know the kid at Arkansas. People
like the Kansas what about that. You remember, did you
declare Darren Peterson of Kansas he's he's a complete bus
I think you said Cameron Boozer camera. Boozer was on
People's number one all it felt like all Sarsan Peterson, Okay,
(01:29:31):
has had a variety of physical ailments and minutes restrictions
when he played at Kansas. Does he love basketball? Because
I I guarantee you Ben what's his face didn't love
basketball at LSU Ben Simmonson, yeut, he flowed out well.
He also he had some major surgeries too. Okay, Well,
(01:29:54):
I guess we shall see Wizards open to trading the
number one overall pick, according to the NBA insider Matt
Thomas Sham, saying there's expected to be a robust market
for antot Coompo as they will maintain their trade deadline
asking price of a young blue chip talent and a
and or a surplus of draft picks. Who's gonna get him?
Speaker 7 (01:30:21):
Man?
Speaker 1 (01:30:22):
I still, I think I mentioned this on a previous
cup feelings or to tell the truth, Nick, I think
he's going east be better? Please? How about the Knicks?
I mean, who I don't even know? I don't want
why don't want? The Knicks one. I want somebody that's
I want somebody that you know who loves star hunting Miami.
(01:30:44):
Uh well, wait, of course be interested in a talent
like you're honest the two time MVP. He likes trading
for guys that pass their prime. Well, he'd be there
to make that trade though. There's that's another good conversation.
Hmm hmm. Okay, elsewhere Matt and the News at noon
(01:31:05):
A Florida Hyde. Now, we can't do this because it
is a Florida story. A Florida high school has suspended
their football coach for swindling a player out of sev
seven thousand dollars to represent him as his agent. Hector Clavijo,
(01:31:25):
the third is being investigated as his activity was The
investigation was launched in April, apparently in the Palm Beach
area where he was hired in twenty twenty one. He
swindled a player out of seven thousand dollars acting as
a fake NFL and NCAA coaches agent and directors of coaching.
(01:31:50):
He got five thousand dollars in a bank transfer from
a player, as well as a two thousand dollars Zell
playment as part of an NIL agreement the player. We're
not gonna hear the last of stories like this before.
We're gonna have coaches saying, hey, i'll represent you, I'll
cut your check, I'll get you give me part of it.
I'll get you the best deal possible. Yeah, this is
gonna be something we were gonna hear more of. I
(01:32:11):
swear he is praying on young student athletes, Florida investigators say,
while using his power to secure CLIENTE. That's a nice
way to end the news at noon. A lot of
snakes out there, folks, be careful. Yeah, but that feels
like that probably happened before in other situations. I can
call it in high school before, you know, guys trying
(01:32:32):
to It's almost like assistant coaches jumping onto kids. Hey, hey,
take me with you to your school. I'll get you
better deals there. I'll get you more money there, I
get the high school kid down. Oh wow, they're calling you.
Don't boris get to the chorus on my Twitter. That's
what people are calling you. That's what the streets are saying.
Who says that the streets? Let me see who these
(01:32:54):
streets are they that's what they are saying. Daven and
alsince his Liberty White Matt with his finger on the
Torel pulse. That's actually accurate like that, Hay, I'm almost
at one thousand views. That's good.
Speaker 3 (01:33:12):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (01:33:13):
Exclamation point, rolling eyes. Texans schedule exclamation point. I can't
wait for what Week number nine? Who the Texas going,
Oh my god, get out of here, you're fake news.
Week thirteen of the Texans going play to Baltimore. Ravens
(01:33:34):
is getting nude right now? Seven one three two one
two five said we see, we see, we say that. Sorry, Johnathan, Look,
I'm not one hundred. Yeah, don't go Johnathan's. We's been
like this for a long time, and it's been before you. Jonathan.
Your has been.
Speaker 3 (01:33:56):
Things.
Speaker 1 (01:33:57):
I don't get you ready for things. We This is
the precipice of why we did things. I don't get
NFL schedule release talk, high school recruiting breakdown. You don't
care who those kids are. Some people do some very minor.
Chris Gordy does. Gordy walked on SEC. He's a little
different SEC unfiltered. Cole Thompson cares. But remember every time
(01:34:18):
you hear a high school coach or a college coach
say man, we love our recruiting class. I want to
hear someone say, God, our class sucks. We gotta find
that bit from h Northwest Texas, A and M or whatever.
Wasn't he in the wasn't he in the practicing in
the Walmart parking lot with with the with the push
cars id of letting the kids down? I got a
(01:34:39):
terrible recruiting class. Don't terrible, Matt. I think I try
to go like spurry or on. You sound like Dale
Brinson too. Now that's a little different, Matt. There's barbecue.
You ever been a delicious barbecue? Jonathan. That's all Main Street,
next to the CBD plant, next to the CBD shop.
(01:35:00):
They called something nail to eight. I don't know what
that means.
Speaker 5 (01:35:03):
Now.
Speaker 1 (01:35:03):
I wasn't in the military, so I'm not sure what
that means. This is a weird Monday. It's my fault,
well you know the part it's a fault it is,
it's their fault. Six or Lambert, please save us. I
want all of y'all to speak this into existence in
(01:35:25):
Lambert we trust seven one three two one two five seven. Nunny,
it is really a big deal that Yannis is not
being talked about I mean that is that was the
rumor that was you couldn't confirm it. And then when
(01:35:49):
Sham's who Sham Sharani for those of who don't know,
is the lead writer for the NBA's I mean big
guy woge was it before that? He's the king? It
used to be he and WOJ one two. Who's even
number two these days? Uh? Mark Stein No, Chris B. Haynes, No,
Ramona Shelburne No. Probably number two news gatherer. I don't
(01:36:19):
know you'd have a large argument for number two. Sam
amck No, he's more feature writer. He's and I like
Sam good guy. Yeah, that Clow doesn't really break news. No, so,
but when you hear that the lines of communication are open,
that means somebody's gonna go get him. I can't imagine
the Bucks wanting to go through this again and having
(01:36:40):
to go to the off season with having to figure
out whether or not Johannis wants to stay as a
Milwaukee Bucking. I'll write this gut feeling down now. He's
gone young blue chip talent and or a surplus of
draft picks. Well, the rockets of a bunch of draft
picks and young talent. I guess if you and I
(01:37:04):
were the general man. Let's say you and I were
the one two general manager punch of the Rockets. Okay,
do you have to do you put into a simulator?
Do you yousion machine? Now I'm talking about I'm talking
about the the logist. I'm talking about just the the
what envisioning what like? Because you know AI can put
hell a video game can put Giannis and Kevin Durant
the floor at the same time, right, Yeah, you would
(01:37:28):
have to envision what it looks like. You'd have to
talk to the player. You'd have to talk to Kevin Durant,
You'd have to talk to coach Udoka.
Speaker 3 (01:37:33):
You'd have to.
Speaker 1 (01:37:37):
Really try to plan and figure out and think about it. Also,
the payroll implications, I don't know exactness is big money
for several years. I'd have to go look up exactly
how much? Can I give you a dumb down thought
about this, There's only one basketball on the floor. Yeah,
those two guys. Can those guys coexist with each other?
(01:38:00):
But Kevin Durant step down his game to not being
a twenty six point game of score down to say
twenty one. He probably would have to agree in a
way kind of the way Kevin Durant could dictate where
he was gonna go because he could he could just
tell teams which ones he would resign with and which
ones he wouldn't. Yeah, because I'm just looking up be
honest as the deal right now, he's only got one
more year next year, he's got fifty eight million, and
(01:38:21):
then he's got a player option for sixty two million
in which he'll take. You're not stupid, No, he's I mean,
he's gonna look for a longer deal. He's not gonna
take the option. He's gonna probably want a longer term deal.
Do you can you give somebody that old which would
be what thirty three sixty two million dollars? Look at
me that way, that's a ques decent question. Yes, he
at least maybe he won't get sixty million a year.
(01:38:44):
Fred van Vliet got like forty five million a year
from their Rockets. I mean, yes, I think so. So
he would be he has a little leverage in that
he could tell which to whisper to which teams he'd
be willing to sign an extension with. I just feel
like the Rockets wouldn't even if they were going Yanni's hunting.
(01:39:07):
They wouldn't have said anything the press conference about it
that giving away their information. Yeah we want Giannis, We're
gonna do whatever it takes. Not gonna happen, or they
they could have done it down and by saying, hey,
we're we're thinking about all options. Yeah, I mean they did.
I never got that vibe from them. There was similar
language to that and that like I think they said, like,
(01:39:29):
we'll be receptive to improving the teams, but where we
like the guys, we have something basically to that effect
was said. I can't remember the exact words, but I
didn't come across as going, wow, there's multiple material, we're
desperate to make a move or anything like that, because
I mean, that would be foolish for rough el Stone
to say that, and it's just not gonna happen. I
(01:39:50):
don't think he'll be here, please, I just know want
him going to Golden State could happen. Guess who signed
to your contract to stay as a coach of the
Golden State Warriors. Would that be Steve Kerr? Did you
see what Steve Kerr was offered by ESPN? I did
not gang we we me we rip on ESPN for
(01:40:17):
paying too much for their commentators, which they do. They
offered Steve Kerr seven million dollars a year to be
their lead NBA analyst, and he didn't have to go
on quote unquote hot topic television shows, so analyst only. Well,
(01:40:41):
he probably could have gone on he could go on
Sports Center. I don't think Van van Peltz sports centers
consider that as Leglar does some sports center he does,
does he do the hot topic shows? I don't want those,
so I don't think so. But I mean, I'm assuming
he's there talking about inside the NBA and talking about
first take and not worst take, worst take, or get
up or what of those stuff, Get down, keep track
(01:41:05):
all these stupid shows. Look seven million. I'm gonna try it.
Dumb it down for apparently I'm some saying dumb it down.
I'm sorry, I said it three times in one segment.
I'm gonna try to think about this. If I'm an
NBA fan, and I've said this about the NFL too,
If the Cowboys are playing the Eagles and they're playing
for the NFC championship, Eagle champions East or the championship,
(01:41:27):
it could be you and Adam Wex are doing the game.
I wouldn't care who's calling the game. When did the
television executives in the last decade ross decide? And I'm
not trying to pocket watch people because good for Tony Romo,
good for h for Tom Brady, good for Chris collins Worth.
(01:41:48):
But when did we start seeing these national TV brands
paying crazy money Steve Kerr seven million dollars a year
to be an all for NBA games. I don't know.
I think it's one of those things that you notice
(01:42:11):
or you don't notice as much when it's really good.
It's like a luxury. It's like, I don't know, the
seat warmer on your car. You like to have it,
you don't have to live with it. Now, I'll say this,
The quality of the presentation of Monday Night Football with
Joe bucking Troit mad too very good. But those guys
(01:42:31):
are both making north to ten million dollars a year.
I think it's one of those little things like kind
of I don't know what, you don't call it window
dressing or whatever, to where when it's there and it's nice,
you're like, oh, this is good. But I don't think.
I don't know how much of a tune out factor
there is for certainly for us the die hards or
the casuals. I mean, are are people getting so mad
with the commentary that they're turning it off? I don't
(01:42:53):
feel like that. But every network is doing it, so
there has to be some kind of value. Magg give
you a horrible analogy. Oh yes, Ross, you, me and
Jonathan go get us a ribbi. Okay, good cut of meat, right,
you have delicious there first trip, but ribbi is great.
Stay with me. Sorry, we go get some Wagu beef
(01:43:13):
at triple the amount. It would taste delicious, but we're
not gonna come away going. Man, thank god we had
Wago beef because we couldn't possibly stand the thought of
a Ribbi entering our mouth. What percent? Yeah? What percent
better is the prime over the Wagu or the A
five from choice from selected let's choices? Okay, let's say
(01:43:35):
the Texans are playing the big game of the week
against the uh. Let's say the Los Angeles Chargers three
twenty five CBS. Yeah, Tony Rommels maybe working the game
with Jim Nantz. Okay, that's fine. We'd make fun of
Tony Romo a little bit quirkiness. But if all of
a sudden we gave the third analyst on CBS. If
all of a sudden, it was Trent Green call in
(01:43:56):
the game, would we would we go? Man, we lost
the for the passion for this broadcast because these two
guys are doing the game. I don't think so it's
like a like I said, it's like a luxury item,
and there's not that much discernible difference. But I mean,
clearly they keep shelling out all this cash they feel
like it's worth it. And I think maybe executives like
(01:44:17):
big names. Steve Kurr is obviously a huge name. But
if I'm the leader of Disney and I'm want and
I'm letting people go and unemployment because of my production cost,
and I am always talking about how our price to
consumer point is getting out of control and people are
getting complaining because the Disney Hulu packages are too much,
(01:44:39):
or the ESPN plus plus to watch my wrestling or
my or my football is too much. I want to
keep those people. I don't know if I want to
gouge my audience in saying your experience is gonna be
better because Steve Kurr is gonna be calling a game
between the Bucks and the Celtics. Yeah, if we do though, Yeah,
(01:45:00):
if we do one to one though, because he would
be unseating Tim Legler, right, or Richard Jefferson or both exactly. Like,
is that moving the needle for the casual NBA fan
or it's obviously not moving in for the diehard. Stan
Van Gundy does games on Prime. I think he's a
nice job. He does a great job. But if Stan
Bean Gunny never did a game again, okay, bye. I
(01:45:21):
like him on Turner. I think he does a good job,
but you wouldn't be like all, I can't watch his
game now. Hm, I don't know, because I'll say this.
In local broadcasting, whether it be radio or television, there's
a certain threshold. You may have your favorite anchor on
Channel two eleven thirteen, Oh love them all, but there's
(01:45:44):
only going to be a certain amount of money for
those guys. Oh they're replaceable. I mean they paid Dave
Ward very well for a long period of time at thirteen,
but there was a certain level they said we just
can't give any more. Of course, you and I irreplaceable. Irreplaceable. Well,
have you been the centerpiece of this lineup for sixteen years?
(01:46:04):
Hashtag no rais in a long time hashtag not complaining
about it? Well, maybe one of us. I'm doing all right,
I'm doing okay. I'm very hap back the moonlighting as
an right now. Granted, saving up curR is gonna make
I think seventeen million dollars a year. They said, seventeen
and a half is what he made last year. So
(01:46:29):
I mean, isn't that like making isn't seventeen and a
half in the Bay Area like making seven anywhere else?
What's the costal? Isn't it like the highest cost of
living in America? Is it more than New York City?
Speaker 3 (01:46:38):
I think?
Speaker 1 (01:46:39):
Or is it not? I can tell you that when
I travel to the Bay Area, it's it's it's more
expensive to do the daily things that I want to do,
eat uber Yah, San Jose, San Francisco, New York City,
and Honolulu. Honolulu very expensive. Really Yeah, that's why that's
probably why we didn't do the Hawaii vacation as a family.
It's too expensive. You could go to the other islands.
(01:47:00):
You're not cheaper, They're more expensive. How lou is a
city at least? Okay, twelve thirty three on Sports Talk seven,
we got Missing You coming up at one thirty today,
look order that we'll see how some former Astros are
doing seven one three, two, one two five, seven, ninety twelve,
thirty seven. It's Matten Ross with you until two o'clock today.
(01:47:22):
We got Missing You coming up at one thirty. Braves
are now twenty eight and thirteen after a seven two
win at the Dodgers. We'll be discussing Mauricio Dubon and
Missing You coming up at one thirty. That segment almost
is becoming more painful by the week when it comes
to Marisio Dubon because he's not letting up. It's not
going to ops like nine hundred all season. I ain't
(01:47:43):
worried about it, all right, Well, got mister Allen, Yeah,
Nick Allen, Nick Allen, five fifteen ops. Now you're playing
every day Thursday, five point fifteen ops all year long.
It is interesting. I hope we get an update on
Jeremy Panya and like the Joey Little Berfiedos of the
world with joe as spot coming up today. Astro's home
(01:48:05):
today for Seattle and a first to four with them,
and then three tomorrow after that with the Texas Rangers.
Big week in the American League West. Can the Astros
gain ground? Find out next? On Sports Talk seven ninety
It's almost like a tease. Yeah, building a drama. Yes,
(01:48:26):
let's go, baby, feeling good? Touch you? Emi? Turn around?
See way? Why are you squinting at me? Because I'm
I'm fascinated by your tatsoo Emi bounce back stuff. There's
been zero life. Is that what it is that you're doing? Yes,
even though he goes down to spring and spring trending
to two minor league games, Yes, with zero pressure on him,
(01:48:49):
all he's gotta do is just throw the pressure. And
there's pitch clock, there's the hard mounds, really humid in
Corpus CHRISTI. The sushi isn't good, Yeah, sugar Land. Maybe
the guy cotton traffic on the way down fifty nine.
You don't know what happened. He only walked like five
guys in three innings, didn't give up no runs or
was it one run? It should be three up, three down,
(01:49:13):
three straight innings. Every single throw a perfect game down there,
I would think. So he wasn't throwing perfect games down there.
It's rehab, baby, We've seen bad rehab. And then guys
come out and start you know what you sound like.
You sound like Chris Gordon. Oh, worried about your on
Alvarez in spring training? Oh no, you're not. Can't hit
in the spring. It's fine, tatsu Emi, It's gonna be great.
(01:49:36):
Completely the same scenario, Jonathan. He is absolutely going all
in on Totsu email with a bounce back. I think
people know I'm joking. Right, Well, I'll tell you what.
If it works, you're a hero. And if it doesn't,
want some some of the weirdos out there to believe
in this quality. Oh yeah, zero sugar. Multiple people reaching
(01:49:59):
out about Mike quality Start Plus. Appreciate you folks listening.
That's quality Start Light. You game and you don't even
know what you're calling. No, I did no quality Start Plus.
He did seven innings to shut out ball. I've done both.
Oh you see you. Okay, let's make sure get this right.
You have quality start Light, right, You've got quality start
Quality Start Yeah, you got quality Start Plus. Yeah, you've
got bud Light. You got bud Wiser, and then you
(01:50:19):
got bud Ice, the real heavy stuff for the real alcohol,
and you got Keystone Light. Yeah. Bud Ice Yeah, comes
with the court order from your ex wife in a
mug shot of the Montgomery County a police department. Yes,
I'm obsessed with that. By the way, what Montgomery County
has a Facebook page and anybody gets the rest they
(01:50:40):
put their mugshot on there. Oh got Montgomery County is
a lot bigger than you think it is. Yeah, real
nice folks over there. Okay, so let's go through Boson Arrows.
And I wish is actually say this more for tomorrow,
but we're gonna do for today because the Astros lost
five nothing. When I gonna get to a deep dive
(01:51:00):
of the Reds five nothing when if things go right,
we are very very chipper. We are like man the
the the the the light was turned on. All he
needed was some Corpus Christy seafood. All he needed was
to go to the uh the Red Lobster down in Rockports,
(01:51:24):
some of them Jenner Bay biscuits, and he prayed at
the salina statue, you know what, altering his dinner menu,
his dinner to eating time. Yeah, he's getting used to
all of it. Okay, that's the good side of you
got a pitch. He's got a pitch. I'm sorry. The
negative is going to be what he went down the spring,
he went down to the miners and couldn't fix it.
(01:51:46):
He's obviously in his head, and the reality is he's
gonna have to try this again. He's gonna have to
be given multiple five starts in order whether or not
to figure out this is a complete bust. Obviously right
now the answer is yes. But with all the injuries
and the fact you don't have Hunter Brown ready to
start right away, and the fact you're not gonna see
(01:52:08):
Christian Javier, and the fact that you're going to have
who else has been gone you got I mean, you
know Javier and those guys. Yeah, I mean, you've got
nobody that's really fighting for that starting spot. I mean,
Ryan Weiss is down at Triple A. Ryan Weis wanted
to be a starter. Now he's starting obviously for Triple A.
They're going to have to give him every opportunity. He's
(01:52:30):
a sink or swim on this. You know what this
sounds like, though, And don't get mad at me. This
sounds like Jose Bray You for who, that's who. That's different.
I'm just saying, I can I sound like I'm saying,
give him four at bats every game, give him an
opportunity to get out of this slump until the Astros
(01:52:50):
eventually said, Eh, he can't get out of it. I
mean it took Mike Burrows had the best, his best
start of his career on Friday. He scuffled for a
little while. Tatum is literally coming from another country. But
you have more invested in that picture, though, of course
you do. I think expectations from Mike Burrows are a
(01:53:14):
lot less, are a lot limited, more limited than they
were for TOT two. You don't know, go run the tape.
Back when we were in spring training, he was striking
everybody out wearing number ninety seven in the Florida Con
the Florida Grapefruit League. We were feel pretty good about it,
didn't he Yeah, we thought he was gonna terribly important.
Stop focusing on March numbers and stop focusing on September numbers.
(01:53:36):
Kim Smith, you're the group a step in the right direction. Yeah,
if he goes it depends. It depends. If he goes
out there and he throws the two thirds of an
inning gives him eight runs, Yeah, we're be looking bad.
You want at least four plus and one or two
runs given up or something like that. So there's a
there's a wide range of outcomes. He's not gonna go
throw eight. Shut out about this. How about giving you five? Yeah,
(01:54:00):
that would be a small step. Yeah, five innings and
one run ball quality start light? So okay, what is
it five? And you're definitely I gotta get these definitions down. Yes,
is it five? Okay? So five runs? Three runs allow
would be what? That's not a that's nothing. This is
nothing at all. That's just a man quality start men,
(01:54:24):
it's a mess. Start what's the quality starting?
Speaker 6 (01:54:27):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:54:27):
Quality? Start six is three six and two? Would you
please put this on your Twitter accounts? We can all
get feeling Matt. Yeah, yeah, you have the metrics. No, no,
you gotta, you gotta. Sometimes it's it's about the feeling
like I feel like you did a pretty good job.
Five innings, two run ball, feeling like you did pretty
good quality start light Boom, Jonathan, there's a lot of
(01:54:49):
subjectivity in this here, I know, trying to find some
wigging five innings, five innings between five and five and
two thirds two or fewer runs giving up? What else
do you need to know? Quality? Start light? Book it,
write it down for night quality start light from tattoo
E Night. How the fans feel four innings to shut
(01:55:10):
out ball doesn't count because you got to at least
get a win. Yeah, qualdit start whatever, zero sugars, gotta
at least five innings. Yeah, you gotta get a win.
You got to be eligible for it, eligible for you
have to win all. The fact that this is getting
traction is hilarious. People are picking up on it, folks.
People meeting three people, No dozens, there's dozens that I
don't see Jeff Passing jumping. Jeff Passes are jumping in
on this. So what Bob Knight this for another Paul Bearer,
(01:55:33):
Paul but Ring bear suit. I don't see Bob Knight
and Yell jumping all of us. I don't see. That's
because he's putting out more misinformation. I don't see John
Hayman jumping all over this. Paul fifty two on Sports
Talk seven, we have missing you coming up in about
thirty eight minutes from now. Uh, chuck up the deuce.
(01:55:56):
Not happy with me on Twitter?
Speaker 6 (01:55:58):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (01:55:58):
Oh what happened?
Speaker 6 (01:56:03):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (01:56:03):
He says, So, what's the point of the tweet?
Speaker 3 (01:56:05):
I know.
Speaker 1 (01:56:08):
You're so bad, go wow, excavation point I emoji's textan
schedule eight two hundred views. You're you're shameless. Well, chuck
up the news angle and follow me on Twitter doesn't
like it, So what's the point of the tweet? I
know something y'all don't know. If you're not going to
(01:56:28):
say that what it is? And you said them, why bother?
That feels very appropriate? Check it up with the deuce.
Thanks for the interaction, Thanks, Chuck. Think the more people
interact with their tweets, the more likely they are to
get seen even more. Oh Aaron ruining the jib, he says,
so you would view it and comment? Pretty sure? He
told Rossie would get many views. Loll weekdays said the two.
(01:56:53):
The jig is up. It's all right, look at man.
I up to eight three D views. Wow, excavation. Yeah,
but forty three hundred those of you. That's that feels fair?
That's fair? Okay. So I've given you, in my mind,
the most overrated things in sports to watch or to
(01:57:14):
care about. Text, NFL schedule releases. One high school recruiting. Uh, oh,
I'll give you day one. How about this one? Mock
draft scoring? How do you feel about mock draft scoring
or mock drafts? In general, Now, what kind of fun
I guess you do. I will say this, maybe maybe
the entire mock draft I can kind of buy. But
(01:57:38):
giving a grade off of one pick seems a little tough,
I think. I mean, it's far and away the schedule release.
You already have the opponents. It's cool to see how
many primetime games are going to be. How cool or standalone?
I mean, it's cool, but it's it's not for four months.
(01:57:58):
The games so well, yeah, I mean if they were
released it in am I just I don't even know,
Like you said, it's Thursday. Yeah, I can't tell you
the last time I watched a fully investing Well. The
reality is, it's a lot of people to do it.
I mean, everybody is putting The thing I think is
the most irresponsible about it is is that there's so
many people putting out ironious information. There's only about, my
(01:58:21):
guess ross two hundred people in this country that are
really know the schedule right now, And unless they feel
like they needed to whisper to their Twitter friends, which
would seem kind of odd, it could leak it to somebody.
I guess, I don't know. It doesn't matter, It doesn't
matter wake me up when the season starts. It's something
to look at, but it's not top of mind. Now
(01:58:42):
I'll say this, when the schedule comes out, you can
kind of schedule, Hey, I want to make sure I'm
in town for this game, or maybe the team is
going on a city that I want to go to.
That kind of to me is someone intriguing. But to
start going, I mean there are so many for you,
tab Council that are saying schedule leaking. This team is
(01:59:03):
playing this, or they're scheduled or they're putting out the
schedule based on what they think it is. I think
it's frankly irresponsible. Now again, Twitter doesn't hold you to
any account, doesn't hold you to anything. No, I think
did it leak. It's like the first Sunday Night Football
is Cowboys Seager. That's official. Now, that's official. That's the
other thing is that the NBC folks they're dosing it out.
(01:59:24):
They were doing it. They put on the Today Show
Dallas Giants will be the first Sunday night game. And
as Chris Consworth has said on multiple occasions, if we
could put they put the Cowboys on Sunday Football seven
team times, we would do so that's crazy to me.
I don't have a hold on America yet. They haven't
made a championship game since since ninety five, right inn FC.
(01:59:48):
And it's not like, not even like their coaches are
intriguing Dak Prescott. I mean, I know he was gonna
get married, then he'd wind up not getting married. There
isn't a there isn't There isn't a boy, Josh Allen.
There's not even a blank ster like Draymond Green on
(02:00:09):
their squad. You know what I'm talking about. It They're
just a team. Yeah, Brian Schottenheimer like Brian Brian Schottenheimer
looks like a school librarian. It's a pe coach like
with the coaches shorts, yeah, the plump smugglers. But I
mean even back in the day, you had stoic Tom
(02:00:30):
Landry who just oozed respect. Then you have this wallid
and crazy Jimmy Johnson took over for him and the personality, yeah,
and then a little bit of Barry Switzer. But after that,
I mean, did Chang Gaily move the needle? I mean
Bill Parker chacing Garrett a little bit, yeah, Chan Gailey,
(02:00:52):
Chan Gaily some dark times A Cowboys fans are yelling
at us right now. Sorry, guys, stop bringing Yeah who
else was who even as a coach? Now that that people?
I mean, I think people like Tomlin had some cashet.
I guess Dan Campbell. Uh yeah, I mean he's got
(02:01:15):
he's he's got an interesting Uh. Mike Rabel's one, now,
Mike Rabel, that's the number one of the list. But
Demiko is as boring as it gets, and he kind
of likes it that way. He's pretty pretty milk toast. Yeah,
but he's ski gets kind of fiery. I guess on
the on the sidelines and stuff. But that doesn't resonate
(02:01:37):
to people in America. What what is it about Dallas?
Is it just because your dad and your granddad love
the copit? Yes, I just don't get it. Good for Jara, Now,
Jara is interesting because he is eighty plus years old
and still trying to run a football team like he's
(02:01:58):
in the fifties. Pretty crazy and makes crazy trades. Who
somebody just sent schedule leak Texans will be at Super Bowl?
LEXI who retweet it? No, it's a joke, she said,
like a mean, like any intendants are at the game
of PLACU. You're playing in it. Hey, I'm ready, I
(02:02:20):
mean honest, I'm ready to Liberty White man. I'm ready
the Liberty White But you're not liberty texted. You're not
getting me in fro until two things when Callahana come
over to do an hour show with us, Oh stop,
or be you in the super Bowl or go to
the super Bowl at least other than that, Like I
have the orders I getting I'm getting orders clips. I'm
(02:02:41):
battle Red Ross because I am not a bandwagon hopper.
It just took you twenty years to jump on it. Yeah,
because it's because you know what it was. It was
Amy Adams Strunk and the Titans waving oiler stuff in
our face. You know what they want us to long for,
the oilers. They want to make us mad, and I'm
not giving them the satus. In fact, you and I
am battle Red Ross. And also c J. Stroud was
(02:03:03):
looking pretty good. What if he throws fourteen interceptions this year?
I'm STI gonna be battle Red Ross. It's for life.
So once you jump to this, battle red your life. Yeah,
I'm getting it. I'm getting a Toro logo tattooed on
my forearm. God, can we can we go watch that happen.
Just kidding, live video of that?
Speaker 4 (02:03:22):
All right?
Speaker 1 (02:03:22):
How about no? And I'm not even gonna make a
better say anything I'm not getting don't don't, don't die.
I wouldn't even let you do it. All right, It's
one o'clock on Sports Talk seven, and you got Missing
You coming up in a half an hour from now.
We're missing you on the phones if you want to
come and say hello to us. Seven one, three, two,
one two, five, Seven seasons is the Matt Thomas Show
with Ross.
Speaker 6 (02:03:46):
What oh?
Speaker 1 (02:03:46):
Five on Sports Talk seven. Out of it is Mad
at Ross with the final hour Missing You coming up
in twenty five short minutes from now, Ross, Bobby Cox,
Believe it or not? How's it going?
Speaker 7 (02:03:55):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (02:03:58):
Unbelievable. We talked about this at seven o'clock. Unbelievable. Questions
coming your way at one fifty fifty fifty. First team
he managed, let's give them freebie? You ready? Oh yeah,
Pittsburgh Pirates. No oh? The first team he managed was
the Toronto Blue Jays. Let's give him a freebe on
that one? Okay? Sure?
Speaker 3 (02:04:19):
Why not?
Speaker 1 (02:04:20):
Okay?
Speaker 3 (02:04:21):
Okay?
Speaker 1 (02:04:22):
Career betting average two thirty eight. Really okay, don't that
part I can't. I can't back up. I'm sorry.
Speaker 6 (02:04:32):
You know what.
Speaker 1 (02:04:32):
You know what you are, You're the add one more
sentence to every sentence that I should have a period
at the end of it. Am I wrong? I wasn't
that far off. Career two twenty five? What did I say?
Two thirty eight? Period? Bobby Cox's first manager old job
(02:04:53):
was with the Toronto Blue Jays. Believe it? Believe it? Okay?
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety seven?
Speaker 7 (02:05:01):
H or was he?
Speaker 1 (02:05:02):
Are you sure about this?
Speaker 6 (02:05:03):
No?
Speaker 1 (02:05:07):
Okay? Well, so it was clarifying him. I as, okay, well,
let's get there, let's get it right. I'm seeing it
was he with the Braves first. Yeah, he was the
Braves and went to the Blue Jays and then came
back to the Braves. You know really, so we'll say
blue Jays and make it or not? Yeah, Bobby? So
Bobby Cox starred as a manager of the Braves and
went back and didn't get it. Really I did not
(02:05:27):
know that. Huh me either, Ted? Yeah, let's take a
look here at I'm looking at the strike shortened season
and Ted Turner fired him manager seventy eight to eighty one.
You are right, well, yeah, you know who succeeded him,
(02:05:50):
Joe Torrey. That's correct. Yeah, I was. I was a
kid that watched the Braves on TBS in the eighties.
I watched him on TBS in the nineties. Very funny
thing on Twitter, people were saying that with Ted Turner
and Bobby cox bol dying the same week, their wedding
should started or their funerals would started. Oh five, has
it ever started the shows exactly on time? Kind of
(02:06:11):
smart when you think about it. I guess I did
it for a long time.
Speaker 12 (02:06:15):
That man.
Speaker 1 (02:06:16):
I guess it worked for them, worked for us. Remember
we have Shoshank Redemption on five, shosh shoshing on tn
T again tonight. Probably, How does charm can continue to
be on tn T in the morning? Bones and Bones
and Practical Jokers on uh? What's the True tv? TV?
(02:06:37):
True TV you're home for Big twelve football and the
NCAA Tournament, and Bones had Big twel football on True TV.
They actually had the Big Toil on tn T. Oh
Okay Cougars were on tn T quite a bit. I
didn't know that. It's like French opening. The tn T
is getting a little leant. You gotta put the heavy
hitters on there. It's French opening the Cougars versus the
(02:06:58):
b Yu Cougars. Hey, we were with Oklahoma State beat
him pretty good and KNT game. All right, let's talk
to the great people of Houston, Texas. Seven one three
two one two. So again, when Ross says the first
managerial job that Bobby Cox had was with the Toronto
Blue Jays, that would be a not correct because he
was a manager of the of the Braves back in
the late nineteen seventies. Let's go to will Im Memorial
(02:07:21):
at one O nine on seven. Honey, will Good morning,
Good afternoon, Thanks for holding.
Speaker 3 (02:07:25):
Hey guys, I've been listening all morning.
Speaker 1 (02:07:27):
Thank you, sir, Thank you.
Speaker 3 (02:07:29):
So Ross, I'm gonna give you some props. About five
or six weeks ago, you went off on this tangent
talking about James Harden and man, did you get some
pushback on the radio. And I was listening to it
and just laughing like crazy. But last week I was
listening and he said something that I did not know,
said that Harden has been in the playoffs every year
(02:07:52):
that he's been in the league.
Speaker 1 (02:07:54):
Yes, I did not know that. I didn't know that anything. Yeah,
I did ye fourteen? Isn't it fourteen PLAYFF appearances? At
least for him?
Speaker 3 (02:08:05):
Seventeen?
Speaker 1 (02:08:07):
That's pretty good.
Speaker 3 (02:08:07):
That's unreal.
Speaker 1 (02:08:09):
Yeah, I remember all. I know what you're talking about.
Matt was out and I was saying good things about
James Harden and people were getting very sevn me.
Speaker 3 (02:08:15):
Oh boy, did you did they beat up on you that.
Speaker 1 (02:08:20):
Here? It's pretty good?
Speaker 3 (02:08:21):
Yeah, I know, but I wanted to give you props
for that because you have to take you straight.
Speaker 1 (02:08:26):
Yes, I haven't gotten the fact, will.
Speaker 3 (02:08:31):
I got questions about the Astros so before I get there.
Steve Carley in there this morning was talking about Danil Brown.
I think Steve forgot about the fact that David Brown
was on that Brave scene to beat Gastros for the
World Championship. He was the vice president of the Player
of Personnel and he drafted. I mean, he brought in
Harris Michael, Harris Grissom and Spencer Striden. I think Steve
(02:08:55):
left that part out.
Speaker 1 (02:08:56):
Well, are we giving the credit to the assistance of
the gentleman Germany? Given credit to the.
Speaker 3 (02:09:01):
General Jada Brown handled the draft? You have the draft
for the Braves.
Speaker 1 (02:09:04):
Okay, well then why but Okay, so that's the case,
and why haven't we been able to take all the
excellence out of that and handed it over to the
Astros organization. Astro's draft has not provided a lot.
Speaker 3 (02:09:17):
He just started in twenty twenty three and it's twenty
twenty six.
Speaker 1 (02:09:23):
Okay, that's I got.
Speaker 3 (02:09:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:09:25):
I mean the question is how long do you give
a general manager? Is the issue?
Speaker 3 (02:09:29):
Well, I'll give you a point. For years people have
said that Baltimore oriol has had the premier minor league
system in baseball. What have they won?
Speaker 1 (02:09:40):
Nothing? As a matter of fact, they've gone to the
playoffs two years, they lost pool heres got swept, and
then they went under five hundred last year and got
they fire their manager.
Speaker 3 (02:09:48):
Yeah, exactly. So my contention has always been this. I've
never been a believer in blaming manager and flame blaming
general manager. Never have never have done that. The only
person that you could blame are the players. Now, if
the general managers that bad that he can't bring you players,
now you blame him. You mentioned one a few minutes
(02:10:10):
ago that I will blame, and that's Jarrah up in Downards.
I don't blame Jarrah for being a bad general manager.
In regard to players, I made Jerra for making bad decisions.
When it comes to coaches, that's two different things. So
I don't think that Ashtros are gonna make any changes.
(02:10:31):
The Braves had the same situation that the Ashtros have
right now. They had it last year and if you
recall the last third of the season, the Brave made
a push for the playoffs. They fired the man of
Snipper got fired, they brought back. I believe this while
life is back. So now the Braves are healthy, Chris
Sales is healthy.
Speaker 1 (02:10:50):
And what is happening the worst record in baseball?
Speaker 3 (02:10:54):
Yeah, that's right, that's right. So let us get the Braves,
let us get Dashtros healthy. For the problem is is
that they do also say we get rid of them.
Speaker 1 (02:11:04):
Okay, so let me ask you this the issue, and
you may have made a lot of sense on all
this well, as the reality is you've also got a
guy that's not that has not done enough. According to
Jim Crane, he's the one that ultimately makes a decision
about extension of a contract. So could do you how
do you think the general public would feel extending both
of those guys if this team found and finishes ten
(02:11:25):
or fifteen games under five hundred and not competing for
a division championship at least or playing well.
Speaker 3 (02:11:29):
The public is not going to be happy with it.
But if you recall it, you said so this morning.
I heard you say this this morning. The public was
upset that we had this, the Baker here because they
blamed them for everything. Yeah, I guess when Dustin is.
Speaker 10 (02:11:42):
The World Series at twenty twenty two.
Speaker 3 (02:11:44):
Because they had nothing to do with managing but the player.
Speaker 1 (02:11:47):
Because the public wants everybody fired every single time.
Speaker 11 (02:11:49):
So that's the they am right, Yeah, exactly right, exactly right.
But they don't they won't analyze the fact that it
takes time to do things. I'm gonna go back to
what I said, Let them get healthy, let's see what
they finish. Then if it comes to the point at
the end of the season that the owner wants to
go a different direction, that he has a chance to change.
(02:12:11):
But I think they deserve to finish to see them.
Speaker 1 (02:12:15):
I couldn't agree with you more in both cases, honestly,
Although I'll say this, the only thing is that how
do you well, if you are going to make a
move at general manager, how do you let the general
manager run the draft, unless you just say the draft's
(02:12:36):
already in place, the board has already set and let's
go from there. Another thing, how do you let the
general manager make the trade deadline trades? Because if you're
not contending, this team should be selling pieces at the deadline.
I think he's going to be here, honestly, human being,
the human being. I hope both guys got an opportunity
(02:12:57):
to finish out the year, but it just doesn't work
out that way typically. Yeah, I'm just trying to look.
It's as far as the draft, the last three years,
you just don't have any top guys.
Speaker 11 (02:13:13):
Now.
Speaker 1 (02:13:13):
Obviously, Dan has also been picking at the back end
of the first round. You can hit a third round pick,
you can hit a fourth, fifth, or sixth whatever round pick,
And as of this moment, there hasn't been a whole
lot of fruit borne out of the draft. Bryce Matthew
has been the best draft pick in terms of like
at the major league xamples and and it least doing
(02:13:33):
something that's right one fifteen on Sports Talk seven ninety
seven to one three two, one two five seven ninety
If you want to come in and say hello, good
conversation with well, the rest of you may follow him
at seven one, three, two, one two, five, seven nine.
We got missing You coming up in about fifteen minutes. Yeah,
I would just say for professionalism stake, I'd like for
(02:13:53):
both those guys to finish out. Mm hmm. But sometimes
the manager looks and the owner looks at the stadium,
Seasey seems empty. Sometimes he listens to the radio shows.
Sometimes he reads the newspaper articles or the websites, and
he's like, you know what I need to get a
different vibe in. All I will say is I will
(02:14:13):
follow my sword like you and I talked about in
the ten o'clock hour the show this morning, rossing.
Speaker 6 (02:14:20):
I.
Speaker 1 (02:14:21):
Omar Lopez is very well respected. Omar Lopez will still
have the same lineup that he'll have to sign with
Nick Allen out there playing a lot, yeah, and underperforming
Cam Smith offensively, and Logan van Way, yeah, and Colton
Gordon and Cody Gordon and Cody Bolton and Cody Bolton
and all these people I've never heard of before having
(02:14:43):
to go get meaningful innings for you. And that's the
reason why Joe's it's not managerial malpractice where this team is.
It's roster construction, which some of it is the construction
become the general manager a lot of it because of
the injuries you've given you you're out of many of
(02:15:04):
your starters in your every day nine and your number
one guy, who all of a sudden makes your pitching
staff looks awesome with the number one pitching staff guy,
and you're on your rotation is down for the longest
period of time, your rotation, your quote unquote depth doesn't
look nearly as awesome. Seven one three, two, one two
five seven ninety seven one twenty four on Sports Talk
(02:15:28):
seven ninety Thank you very much for being a part
of our program today. We very much appreciate it. I
know it's not easy being an Astro or a sports
fan this time of year because the Rockets are out.
NBA Playoffs don't necessarily move the needle for you. The
Astros are not playing well. But this week, as Ross
gives optimism about Tatsui, Emi gives us optimism of Peter
(02:15:52):
Lambert staff Ace oh Ace with Arraghetty Silver World War
Word one, about whether or not we're going to see
Lance mccullor's throw y, his fingernails off. What's going on well?
I mean, you try to pitch without a fingernail. I
can't pitch with my fingernails. He must be beating the
(02:16:13):
hell out of himself on that mound. I don't know
what's going on. Maybe he's been stressed out. I'm stressed out.
Maybe I should be chewing my fingernails. Hose l Twoba
has been doing it for fifteen years. Yeah, let's go
to Jason on seven ninety. Jason, thank you for holding
a good afternoon.
Speaker 6 (02:16:29):
Hey, how's it going, gentlemen?
Speaker 1 (02:16:31):
Good, very good.
Speaker 6 (02:16:34):
Whelan Seystonian big, big sportsman here. I'm very excited about
the Texans. I believe that their off season has been
extremely productive with what they're trying to do on offense, defense.
Nothing has to be done. I've never seen a team,
especially in this city, or really, I mean I pay
(02:16:56):
attention to a lot. I don't see a lot of
GM focusing so hard on one side of the valve
and actually addressing what they need to do. And they're
already you know, eleven to twelve, one team before these change.
So I'm very optimistic. If if the line twelve wins
(02:17:16):
next year, I'm going over that. I think we're going
to dominate people. I think they're going to figure out
things on the line with with the coaching. I think
the run blocking skills of the the linemen that they
bought in is very exciting. Love the show, y'all, keep
it rolling, peace.
Speaker 1 (02:17:36):
Thank you well. First of all, it's always going to
be optimistic. That's the most number one thing. Number two,
very few teams and their fan base become pessimistic from
season to season unless you have multiple departures, whether you've
got retirements or injuries. Have you heard of rockets fans?
(02:17:59):
I'm talking talking about in the NFL. Okay, everybody watches
the NFL drivet is we got better? We got guess what?
Other teams get better by their positions as well. It's
how it's how you spend your money, It's how you
lock guys up. It's what you do to address draft
is positions of failure of the previous season before and look,
(02:18:19):
Kiln Rutledge first round pick Brandon Smith. You got away
from Indianapolis, Why Teller, you got away from Cleveland Arion
to Ursery. You would assume be better today than he
was a year before. So under no circumstances should you
be discouraged. But the number one piece of the puzzle
(02:18:40):
on this is what quarterback are we getting in the
next season from in season number four of c. J. Stroup.
That's what it comes down to, is it the guy
that's going to have a more comfortable offensive line? Is
David Montgomery going to be a better running back than
anything that the Texans could throw at them last year?
The presumption would yes, yes, although the question would be
(02:19:02):
how much is left in the tank on that? Well,
I think David Montgomery's gonna be He's gonna, as a baseline,
be better than than washed up Nick Chubb. And you
still have Woody Marx, who who's a third down back
and we said all season, yeah, he's one of the
worst high usage running backs in football last year. In
theory everybody gets better? Did the Texans get better to
overcome everybody else in the division? I think Tennessee's go
(02:19:22):
in to rebuild. Indianapolis can't figure out their quarterback situation.
I don't think that is fine. Jacksonville, how sneaky can
they be? Is Trevor Lawrence gonna have a down season
after having an upseason? I mean, they played really well
everything he said He's going over twelve wins. That's at
the Vegas line. I wouldn't do that. Do you know
(02:19:43):
what the Vegas line is for mag Yes? Yes, ten
and a half, nine and a half, Okay, Colts eight
and a half, Jaguars nine and a half. So they're
saying it's a competitive division basically, well, yeah, nine and
a half usual, Yeah, Titan six and a half.
Speaker 3 (02:20:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:20:00):
I would just say good to be encouraged. There's nothing
that the team did that would discourage you except for
two things. One is c J. Stroud more like he
was the last couple of years than he was in
his first year, especially the two playoff performances, and we
won't have an answer to that. And number two, there
(02:20:22):
is one position that probably now becomes the weakest on
the offensive side, and that's the receiving corps. Jayden Higgins
is he good enough? Jen Noel? Is he going to
be to take the next step? Higgins was better? Uh,
Collins needs to be healthy. Tank Dell will not be
ready for training camp. We got to stop thinking about
Tank dear good. That's what the reports are. Now you
(02:20:44):
are the Texans insider, Matt, the insider is going to
tell you something. Don't count on Tankdell for twenty twenty six.
We also told us somebody got shot in the foot
and then never came out. Texans Insider, Oh wow, ready,
thank you. Jonathan is not wrong? Sure? Yeah, Hold what
I have been proven wrong?
Speaker 7 (02:21:03):
Wrong?
Speaker 1 (02:21:04):
Okay, I say he put his foot in a George
Foreman grille. I was not wrong because it hasn't come
out that he didn't. How can people asking me about
texting scheduling, I don't. I have no idea. You're hilarious,
You're such a fraudulent person. Well, I'm just responding to text.
I have no idea. God, can you do that? During
(02:21:28):
the break? I think people are mad at me. I
don't know. C. Stroud's gonna be better AFC South Champs.
You heard it here first? What's up? I ain't scared
about it? Yeah, yeah, whatever name is. Wait to this starts. Okay,
(02:21:53):
we got to make sure everybody makes it out of
training camp healthy. I'll put my name on and then
CD Stroud rips his I'm putting my name on the
Tank Dell will not be a huge part of the
twenty twenty six text. Okay, let me write this one down,
let me get the file out, baby, and that hurts
because I'm a no stra wrongest file. I'm the insider.
I'm telling you about Joe Mixon. I told you about
(02:22:16):
se fon DGS a long time ago. Y'all didn't believe me.
Trust you didn't break the pick. The insider you didn't
break the draft was off that day, know you were.
I was on Rockets coverage. You're Lance Mason ts pick.
By the way, I wrote this one down, he's uh.
I think he was a dress Santle Seahawks undrafted freeze
Santa Seahawks. Don't sleep on him. Okay, what are you saying,
(02:22:38):
Tank Dell's not gonna play at all? Well, are you
trying a non factor in twenty twenty six? Okay, James
and Alvin.
Speaker 7 (02:22:43):
High, thank you, gentlemen for the scepting my call of
You guys got some of the most knowledgeable listeners and
sports and I wanted to pick it back on. You
had a previous caller, not the previous call a caller
before that emphasizes that uh they he actually thought the
(02:23:06):
Astros should that all the guys come back from injury
and see where the chips fall, and that Astros is
a better team with a healthy squad.
Speaker 1 (02:23:22):
Than they are.
Speaker 7 (02:23:24):
Now, this is what I and Matt you you even
agreed with him, and nothing wrong with that.
Speaker 1 (02:23:31):
That was good. That was an excellent good, a good.
Speaker 7 (02:23:36):
Analogy on that. But this is what I'm I'm looking at.
They don't have a pitching style, rotation all bullpin. No
matter if the Astros put up nine runs, opposition was
go ten. My whole situation on the Astros is this.
(02:24:01):
They made their own dilemma. Number one, they should have
never got rid of I'm going back some years.
Speaker 3 (02:24:08):
They never should have got.
Speaker 7 (02:24:09):
Rid of the general manager and the manager Jeff Luno
and aj Hinch.
Speaker 3 (02:24:14):
They did.
Speaker 1 (02:24:15):
That was fine.
Speaker 7 (02:24:16):
It was enough in the storehouse to compete for seven years,
go to full World Series, win two, win four pennies.
Now the cover is bare. Now I'm saying this by
(02:24:41):
all star break, Hunt Brown, Jeremy Pinyon, jordn Averared, highest bidder,
get the best in your floor, and and.
Speaker 3 (02:25:00):
And and then this is the kind of uh.
Speaker 7 (02:25:05):
This is the type of a squad that the ownership
of the Astros look gerrem manager can't do nothing unless
the owner says you can do it. And that's where
the Astros at now. So uh, With that being said,
(02:25:27):
I appreciate the time, but by all star break uh yo,
don Avareds have a very good friendly contract. They can
ask the world if they wanted to give up Yo
don Avares, Jeremy Pinon, oh yeah, Hunter Brown.
Speaker 1 (02:25:50):
Oh yeah, then let them rebald.
Speaker 7 (02:25:55):
Time because they're not gonna pay a whole bunch of
money to keep people.
Speaker 1 (02:26:01):
Yeah, thank you gentlemen, Thank you God. We're very happy.
Except your call, they might blow it all up. I
to me still just because of how good jord On is.
He still can be a franchise cornerstone. He's only twenty
nine years old. But you're already paying my thirty million dollars,
so you would, in theory be upping him to like
forty million dollars. It's not gonna be a huge leap
(02:26:22):
as paying Jeremy Paeney a ton of money or paying
hundred Brown a ton of money. So I would still
keep him. You want to contend at some point unless
you're u this, you're saying you're going into the tank
big time for five years, which I don't think Jim
Crane wants to do. If he if you sold off
all the pieces that I'd be thinking he'd be selling
wanting to sell the team next Yeah, exactly, Honestly, that
would make sense. I'd buy that one forty. On Sports
(02:26:54):
Talk seven ninety, I present to you Houston Texas five
four astros, and I ask of all of you, are
you missing him? Ross will start with the Chicago Cubs
third basement Alex Bregman. Last week he went four for
twenty seven, no home runs in an RBI on the year,
(02:27:16):
batting two thirty three ops of six eighty one with
three home runs and thirteen RBIs. Ross, I ask you,
are you missing Alex Bregman? Thirteen ribbies? Yes, pretty good?
Missing him? How many games? I think forty?
Speaker 3 (02:27:32):
Right?
Speaker 1 (02:27:33):
Has he played? Yeah, he's playing. Okay, Yeah, that's what
I'm saying. Thirteen RBI is in forty games. Why did
you said this last week?
Speaker 6 (02:27:39):
No?
Speaker 1 (02:27:39):
Because last week one last week updates? I'm sorry. Yeah,
thirteen on the year, Yeah, I'm sorry. No, Okay, I
thought you said he had thirteen last week. I was like, damn,
you had good. Great, that'd be great. Number two Kyle Tucker,
Well he did some. He we went seven for twenty
three the week.
Speaker 7 (02:27:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:27:56):
Yeah, I had a home run against the astros. Yes,
four ribbies, Okay, He on the AAR has four home runs,
twenty RB eyes, batting average is two forty eight and
his OPS is seven thirty six. I ask you, are
you missing what Al Tucker? Rather have Kyle Tucker or
Smith and Paratus? I will go with I am not
missing Kyle Tucker and Wesnsky. Who's I don't know healing
(02:28:20):
whatever he's really healing. He's playing Grand Theft Auto or something.
Speaker 7 (02:28:23):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (02:28:24):
Is that the default game of choice? I don't know
what about it? What his NBA two K twenty six.
Adam Clanton loves to talk about Grand Theft Auto?
Speaker 9 (02:28:32):
All right?
Speaker 1 (02:28:33):
Next, Hey, Sue Sanchez, Good week for Hayes susl Oh
for the Toronto Blue Jay six for twenty two with
a home run and two RBIs. On the year, he's
got five home runs, seventeen RBIs two forty The batting average, yeah,
ops is seven twenty three. Are you missing him?
Speaker 3 (02:28:53):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (02:28:54):
Don't even yes, I am. I'm sorry. He was a
cost cutting meager for low Perfito, who has been hurt.
Next from Bervlden is currently unsuspension after giving up seven runs,
nine hits, three home runs season a record of two
wins two losses in the area four point five to seven. Russy,
(02:29:14):
Are you missing him? I mean I was, and then
now he hit somebody and he got suspended Red Sox
you could use you could still use a pitching Yes,
I'm I'm missing from. And lastly, but not leastily, is
Leslie a word?
Speaker 4 (02:29:30):
No?
Speaker 1 (02:29:31):
Mauricio Duban last week seven for twenty seven, Oh my god,
no home runs five RBIs. It's a little over two
fitty on the year, two home runs twenty three. RBIs
batting two seventy one with an ops A seven forty one.
Are you missing yes, Yes, everybody's been hurt. You need
a utility guy who's can at least ops seven hundred.
Speaker 3 (02:29:53):
He's done that.
Speaker 1 (02:29:56):
Missing all these guys again a cost cutting measure. We
can give Jim Crane a pass for for not signing
these big long term deals now, but you're shaving down
penny pitching. It's either Jim said go shave it, yes,
or or Dana said, I can go get other players,
(02:30:17):
but I need a little bit of flexibility to cut
the payroll down to bring the other pirate players in. Remember,
who do you sign the to day that or Wash
was Emi and he said, we're not done yet. Well
we're waiting for that, right.
Speaker 3 (02:30:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:30:33):
Dana went to Jim and I was like, yeah, you know, Jim,
I'm gonna save you some money here and send off
Maurice Dumont for Nick Allen. Come on, now, do you
think Dana's like, Jim, you can't make me do this.
Dana wants Jim to open the check book. Come on now,
(02:30:53):
mister Allen. His name is Nick. It's not that difficult.
I didn't call him Zack everything. It's miss I think
you talk about me. I'm like, yeah, maybe all are
distant relatives. You never known to be his cousin. All right,
that's missing you this week? Okay, Honestly, of the five,
if you had really named one that you really miss
(02:31:16):
more thanything else, it's probably Kyle Tucker.
Speaker 6 (02:31:22):
No.
Speaker 1 (02:31:22):
I told you, I'm kind because he's like Paradis in
Camp Smith are locking. I mean, Camps isn't bad, but
East Paradis has been better. So I'm gonna go with
with the injuries, Dubon. We can't use Dubon Probert with
the pitching because the injuries. Yeah, why can't we do
(02:31:44):
Dubon is everybody's been hurt, so you know what missing
Dubon would mean? More dubonn and less Nick Allen, You're right, Okay,
we miss you, Mauricio, all right. Believe It or Not
is up next, All things about Bobby Cox, the former
m manager of a couple of Make League Baseball teams.
(02:32:04):
Seven one three two one two five, seven ninety. If
you want to chime in seven one three two one

on the show. What should we do? We should play
America's fastest growing sports radio game show. We simply call it,
(02:32:26):
leave it out of here, so it works. It calls
seven one three two one two five seven ninety seven

I'll read just in it about Bobby Cox, dam completely
and utterly Acker.
Speaker 12 (02:32:38):

Ross a fifth grader? Yeah? You know that show? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (02:33:13):
He did.
Speaker 1 (02:33:13):
He's a lot more successful than I am. So I'm
gonna go with no. So what's the guy that does?
Here's your sound? I think he might be a redneck
with Jeff Foxworthy. That's right, that's right. Let's talk to
Brian on seven ninety. Brian, you're ready to play Believe
it or not? Yes, sir Brian. Not only was Bobby
Cox's standout pitcher in third basement in high school, he
was also a two way football star Believe it or not.
Speaker 6 (02:33:36):
Not?
Speaker 1 (02:33:37):
That is made up? Nicely done statement number two for
the win. Bobby Cox managed the All Star Games seven times,
which is an all time record. Believe it or not not,
that is right. He wanted to do five times. The
record is Casey Stingle with nine. Nice to get a
winner there. Early on John on seven ninety John, You're
(02:33:58):
ready to play Believe it or Not? I'lle Ben on
his big That's Jeff Dunham. In nineteen ninety five, Bobby
Cox was arrested for simple assault committed against his wife.
Charges were eventually dropped. Believe It or Not? Not Believe it?
Speaker 3 (02:34:20):
Things?
Speaker 1 (02:34:21):
You want to Believe it or not? Rossy Nelson on
seven Ninty Nelson, what was your favorite part of today's
ten to two radio show?
Speaker 3 (02:34:29):
Everything?
Speaker 1 (02:34:30):
Bobby Cox retired third on the all time managerial wins list,
but has since been passed by Tony LaRussa, Bruce Bochi,
and Dusty Baker. Believe It or Not?
Speaker 3 (02:34:40):
Believe It?
Speaker 1 (02:34:41):
No, He's fourth all time, ahead of Boching Baker. To
Daniel on seven Ninty Daniel, We're ready to play Believe
it or not Believe it As a player, Bobby Cox
was beaten out by Joe Tory for the Mets Third
Basement spot. Cox was replaced by Joe Tory when he
was first fired by the Braves. Believe It or Not?
(02:35:02):
Believe it? No, that's not true. Sorry, Matt on Sevenintie, Matt,
your favorite part of today? You send it to radio
show the whole show. Matt. Bobby Cox' one hundred and
sixty two managerial ejections are easily the most in Major
league history. Believe it or not?
Speaker 3 (02:35:23):
Believe it?
Speaker 1 (02:35:23):
There you go statement number two for the win. In
twenty eleven, the Atlanta Braves retire Bobby Cox's number seventeen
Jersey Believe it or not?
Speaker 10 (02:35:33):
Believe it?
Speaker 1 (02:35:33):
No, he's number six. Dude, Hobbyer on Sevenati, Hobby Aer,
Are you ready to play?
Speaker 3 (02:35:41):
Believe it or not?
Speaker 1 (02:35:44):
Bobby Cox both played in and managed in the Venezuelan
Winter League. Believe it or not, that's a believe it's playing, though,
ROSSI these for putting together the last second, which you
we knew about this for four hours, did a pretty
good job. Actually, wasn't that last second. It was more
(02:36:05):
last hour. All right, So tomorrow we've got a serious
gut feeling at eleven thirty. Okay, gut feeling on tatsu Emi,
please start light. You're following your sort of this one?
Who else? We had something else on on gut feelings?
They had put together? Oh well, how many how many
prime time games for the Sweet Texas seven prime time games?
(02:36:30):
I got fifteen? You do have seventeen. Wow, that's quite
a bit, all right, everybody, hang tight, relax. We've got
four entertaining hours coming up with Adam Wexler and I'm
planting they are team. We'll talk to you guys tomorrow
