Speaker 1 (00:02):
Lunchtimers. This is the Matt Thomas Show, ten oh two.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
It ain't town.

Speaker 3 (00:08):
Good morning, everyone, and welcome to the Matt Thomas Show
with Ross is serving a company suspension. Be back in
a couple of weeks. Actually, he's I think in at
least seven thousand miles away from us. He did text
me this morning, which could be like twelve hours later.
I don't even know the time difference. I just could
confuse about these things. But you know what, we are

(00:31):
here in the Central time zone and we are hanging
out with you today. Chris Gordy's gonna stop buying a
few minutes and hang out with us for a couple
of hours.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Looking forward to hanging out with Gordy.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
I don't know about you, folks, and I don't know
how many of you particularly care. I mean, I'm sure
the care factor is a little especially involves one of
your schools. And maybe it's because I'm just a simpleton
and it is what it is on that. But I
don't understand this college football playoff thing. I am thoroughly,

(01:03):
thoroughly confused. Now you have twelve teams in it, you
have conference champions, you.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
Have buys, you have.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
Four of the five conference champions automatically get in and
you have the lowest.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
You don't gonna stop right there.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
I'm gonna like Gordy figure this out for us, because
I sure as hell can't figure it out.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
So if you have been even a wee bit confused.

Speaker 3 (01:31):
About the college football playoff, Chris Gordy's gonna help us
out coming up in a few minutes here on the show.
Plus we will just generally make fun of his disappointing
LSU program and just bagging all things SEC because of their.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
Frankly supremacy in college football.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
All Right, A lot to get to today, and I
know that you're looking for Titans Texans breakdown. That will
come in due time, because I know nobody else in
the marketplace is doing it.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
I know no one else talking.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
About the huge rivalry game between the Titans and the Texans.
We will get to it over the course of the
show and tomorrow and Friday as well. But today is
also interesting, Dave, because we've got a couple of our
regulars to join us. That includes Imaidoka and he'll be
with us at one o'clock Rockets and the Indiana Pacers

(02:20):
tonight inside Toda Center. We'll have it for you right
here on seven, and I'll have to call at seven
o'clock breaking. We'll start at six with the launch pad.
We'll have Willie Fritz jon Us at one thirty. He's
our regular and he'll be with us today as the
Cougars get ready to take on the Baylor Bears. We'll
also have in between those two gentlemen at one twenty.
This afternoon, we'll have Robert ri that's right, Robert Ri

(02:45):
Championship Robert Orriy ninety four, ninety five literally lands like
at twelve fifteen, twelve thirty, and we'll be in town
tonight as they celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the ninety
three to ninety four NBA CHAMPI Connor, you weren't even

(03:07):
born yet. That's disheartening to me that you don't know.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
What it's like to see a championship with involving the
Houston Rockets, and that, frankly, a lot of you don't know.
And if you were born, you were five or six,
or you were three.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
But I'm going to tell you all something, and I
don't mean to get all nostalgic on you, but I
was living my best life back then. I was twenty
two years old and I just put this on Twitter
a few minutes ago. And I was producing the Dan
Patrick Sports Show, which was over on seven hundred when

(03:46):
he was doing morning sports. It was the first morning
sports show in Houston, and I was producing it, and
I got an opportunity to become the public address announcer
for the Rockets the Summit.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
And this team was pretty good. Then it got really good.

Speaker 3 (04:03):
And then he had Choke City, then he had Clutch City,
and then he won the Western Conference and then you
played the New York Mecca Bakhas with Mob Robert on NBC.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Then you had OJ and then you won a championship.
I was pretty damn lucky.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
I had the best scene of the house for at
that point in my life, the best sports moment of
my life as a Houston sports fan. Remember I was
twenty two. I had gone through years of order frustrations.
I had gone through as a teenager losing the eighty
six playoff to the Mets with the Astros. I had

(04:43):
gone through as a young man FI Slama Jama and
all their close but no cigars, and obviously the North
Carolina game.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
It still stings.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
I was fat, no girls liked me, and I needed
some joy in my life. So I got some. It
was it Houston Rockets thirty years ago. Since then, I've
married three kids. I'm happier, I'm a lot skinnier. This

(05:14):
thing's going pretty well. The voice of the Rockets on
radio now I've done okay, knock on whatever this property
is made of.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
But it is once in a while. I don't know
it a lot, but man, just going.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
Back to those yesteryear's and thinking about all the memories
of that, and we'll do a little bit of that
on the radio show today. As a matter of fact,
I did find me doing the starting lineups for the
Rockets and Nicks on YouTube and I put it on
my Twitter account. We'll play a little bit of it
here at some point during the show, just for those
of you that are nostalgia.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
So again, I.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
Hope that I'm catching some of you thirty year olds
to some of you thirty two year olds, thirty four
year olds that have no idea what I'm talking about.
But basketball did reign supreme in our town when the
Rockets were winning championships and filling up the summit. It
was such a good time, and I'm gonna tell y'all

(06:09):
something else, And this is gonna fall on deaf ears
for most of you that never walked into the Summit,
now it's Lakewood Church.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
But I absolutely loved the Summit.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
It was the arena I grew up, and just like
I loved the astronome, now I want the astrodome going
to go away. I mean, I've been very blunt about that.
I mean that thing is just an ice oren embarrassment
for our community now. And last week's attempt to try
to reinvigorate it was an absolute joke, and thankfully it
fell on deaf ears. But you could pick me up,

(06:41):
blindfold me, put me in a time capsule, spin me around,
I don't want to get sick, and drop me in
the Summit in nineteen eighty five, eighty four, eighty seven,
eighty eight, and I could know exactly where ends because
it's it had a distinctive smell to It smelled frankly

(07:02):
of burnt popcorn and sweat and a little bit of vomit.
But it had a scent that I will never ever forget.
And I knew exactly if you blindfolded me every single
day for a week I would know exactly what arena
I was in. First of all, the name was cool.
Second of all, the location was cool. Thirdly, you know,
guys don't know this, or a lot of you don't.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
Then in charge for parking, you drove into the parking
garage for free. You didn't a cent.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
Now I think it changed down the end, but you
didn't pay for it. You got in free parking. And
it didn't have luxury boxes. It didn't have club seating,
but who needed that. Nobody cared about that back in
the day. You just want a good seat in the house.
And it was a lout arena. It didn't have a
super high roof, didn't had one of those big jumbo
tron scoreboards in the middle of the scoreboards are on

(07:47):
the baselines.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
They were up high.

Speaker 3 (07:50):
It had zero bells and whistles, like most of those
arenas did back in the day. But if I could
just go back in time and just hang out and
then arena one more time and do the arena announcing
for the rockets just one more time in that scenario,
it would have been absolutely amazing, and I would do

(08:12):
it in a heartbeat. So a little bit of a
salage on the radio show today, as we have Robert
Orri join us at one twenty this afternoon. We've also
got shut Cho bum ass up at eleven thirty this afternoon.
Can we rip on and I know I fall on
deaf ears on this, on some of this too, and
Connor backed me up on this.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
Can we just rip on every map app that we
have on our phone.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
It's got me going in forty different directions again today, Hey,
save minutes, Save four minutes here, save five minutes here.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
So every time I asked me to say, do you
want to save five minutes?

Speaker 3 (08:43):
Of course I do, I hit the damn button and
I wound up losing five minutes. Seriously, if I could
get helicopter service between from my house and Kingwood to
this office, I would do it in a heartbeat.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
Or I can just buy a high Ris in downtown whatever.
I'll figure something out. Seven one three two one two
five seven ninety seven one three two one two five
seven ninety A light day for Houston sports headlines.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
We do have the Rockets against the Pacers coming up tonight.
We'll get the college football rankings that are out.

Speaker 2 (09:15):
We had the Texans back on the practice field today
as they get ready to start, at least getting ready
for Will Levis and the Tennessee Titans. This is a
stretch of the games for the Texans, but they'll start
to feel better about themselves. They're going to beat Tennessee
this week. They're gonna go.

Speaker 3 (09:30):
To Jacksonville and beat the Jaguars next week. They're going
to beat the Miami Dolphins after that, and then it
gets a little frisky with Kansas City and Baltimore, kind
of how we thought it was going to play out,
right Gang seven one three two one two five seven nineties.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
How you reach our show today?

Speaker 3 (09:46):
Seven one three two one two five seven nine zero.
If you're on Twitter, I want to follow me there.
It's at Sports Empty at Connor d mcgovernor, and we
are staying on Twitter. I know it's the new KLEA
fun thing to do is to drop aga you're mad
about the political race. It's still the number one social
media platform, and I'm not gonna go to the other
stuff because I just I've got too much social media

(10:07):
as it is, so I'm gonna stay on Twitter. I'm
not letting politics decide whether I stay with something or
I don't stay with something. Y'all can find me there.
I tweet about non political things. I don't want to
get you to get mad at me. We talk, We
talk about fun stuff on Twitter. I promote the show.

Speaker 4 (11:30):
Matt Thomas now on Sports Talk seven ninety, Well.

Speaker 2 (11:49):
Our friend Joan, who's been listening to me for thirty years,
is asking you, Connor, to for me to tell you
the story about the after party after the first championship
we'll happen there. Oh god, there's so many layers to it.

Speaker 3 (12:10):
I mean, my wife gets kind of upset when I
bring it up, and you know what, she's been a
meeting right now.

Speaker 2 (12:22):
I guess I could do you. You see, I always
feel like I tell y'all too much about myself to
get myself in trouble. You know, we have always have
a different audience here.

Speaker 3 (12:38):
So in Connor, you know what, because we're friends and
you're young, and you have to understand that back in
the day, sports was a little bit different and relationships
were different.

Speaker 2 (12:49):
All right, I'll do it.

Speaker 3 (12:50):
I wasn't thinking about this doing it, but since Joan
asked everybody grab an extra cup of cars, I would
give you all, like, let's save at the bottom of
the hour, and I want you to find it's gonna
be Matt's story Time, and.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
It will be it won't be completely It'll be like PG.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
Thirteen, Little r and I'll have to clean up some
of the issues to it because every time I tell
the story and my wife finds out, finds us about
finds out about the story, She's like, oh, you have
to tell the story again, inn't you.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
I'll just tell you this as a little tease at
the bottom of the hour. What happened to me after
the party was in the paper the next day. Oh
my gosh. Yeah, and I'm very excited. Okay, So if you've.

Speaker 3 (13:37):
Never heard my championship party story after the Championship, you
will be hearing it during Matt story.

Speaker 2 (13:44):
Time coming up at the bottom of the hour.

Speaker 3 (13:46):
Seven one three, two one two five seven ninety. Please
call us something else before then, so I can maybe
push it back, because I'm deathly afraid that again I'm
going to be getting in some trouble again. I'm she
said to me, you know, I have time until eleven o'clock.
I think I'm okay. Seven one three two one two
five seven nuty seven one three two one two five
seven ninety. So what was the main crux of the
morning show? I was listening and they were talking about

(14:08):
the uh college football playoff. I mean, there's just honestly,
they're not a whole lot going on sports wise. I mean,
PACER's Rockets is somewhat interesting. Well have you made it
coming up the Apparently the Summit logo is on the
floor at the Tota Center tonight.

Speaker 2 (14:27):
If I'm correct on that, I don't know. I haven't
seen it, but that would be cool. It's a little
bit old school there. What else we got going on?
Texans again hit the court a field today? Will Nico
Collins be on a snapcount again this week coming up
against Titans? I kind of hope, so you know what,
I'm gonna tell you this, and this may sound a
little weird, I hope we get to see uh Davis

(14:52):
Mills quarterback for a quarter, not a whole game.

Speaker 3 (14:56):
Because he's doing it for more than a quarter. That
means he got that, That means CJ got her. I
want fourth quarter mop up duty like I was watching.
I was in Chicago over the weekend and the Rockets
by the Bulls, so they put the Jacksonville Detroit game
was on the CBS Philly, and I had any interesting
Green Bay Chicago.

Speaker 2 (15:14):
I don't care about any one of those two teams, but.

Speaker 3 (15:16):
I didn't want to see what Jacksonville was doing and
how Detroit's playing. Is it Hendon Hooker is there? That's
the backup quarterback I think as a name there. He
played like eleven minutes left to go in the fourth quarter.
Jacksonville lost the game fifty two to six. I'm kind
of looking forward to that this week now. Grant Tennessee's
defense I think is significantly better than Jacksonville's. But isn't

(15:40):
a time the Texans blew somebody out like that. Isn't
a time to see lots of.

Speaker 2 (15:47):
John Metchi play.

Speaker 3 (15:50):
Goombawalle carrying the ball like nine times into fourth quarter.
I think this week needs to be a and I
know it's a short week, but it wasn't like they
traveled at a great distance they put in Dallas. It
took yesterday off so they had a chance to heal
their body one less day of practice or one less
day to get ready for Tennessee should not be that.

Speaker 2 (16:09):
Big of a deal. Titans are terrible, but that's.

Speaker 3 (16:14):
What I want if you were to if you were
to ask me, and I would think there would be
a lot of you Texans fans that feel the exact
same way. Don't you want just a good old fashioned
ass whippon? First of all, we hate Amy crunk drunk. Secondly,
wouldn't it be nice if Amy we got Amy some
tickets to see the University of Houston played Baylor and
the Cougars were in their h Town blue uniforms. As

(16:36):
a double mintal double rods to her.

Speaker 2 (16:38):
Got to hate her. I don't know why I hate her,
but I just do.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
Because once again another lucky case of being a kid
of a really rich person. My greatest regret in life
is my parents weren't worth six billion dollars. Actually they
were great parents, but that's another here and there. But
she didn't do it, earn it? Do you think Amy's
crunks drunk ever worked forty hours in her life in

(17:04):
a week, and now she's taken a franchise, took him
to Tennessee. No grant she made a lot of money,
but the stadium sucks. They have not even sniffed any
sort of supremacy. I mean, they've gone to the Super
Bowl and almost damn won the thing against Saint Louis,
but that's another here nor there. But largely they've gone
through one sucky quarterback after the other. They really haven't

(17:24):
been good at quarterback. What since Steve McNair with Zach Mettenberger.
Who else in that list of sucky Tennessee Titans quarterbacks?

Speaker 2 (17:35):
Tannehill? Tannehill. I'm trying to make.

Speaker 3 (17:40):
These these people up, but it feels like that has
been a franchise that kind of deserves its own fate.
Bad ownership, frequent coaching changes, and bad drafts.

Speaker 2 (17:50):
Although I remained bullashow and will love us, I just do.

Speaker 3 (17:55):
Seven one three two one two five seven douty seven
one three two one two five seven nut if you want
to get in the conversation. So we got that going on.
We have the college football Playoff going on, we have
the NBA N Season Tournament. I would like to be
able to say it was more energized watching those two
games last night. Oh, by the way, the Cleveland Cavaliers,

(18:15):
I don't know how many of you paid attention to
the NBA. They lost their first game last night. They're
now just fifteen to one. I'm NBA. I'm sure you're
very happy to see somebody not named Boston own the
Eastern Conference.

Speaker 2 (18:27):
But at the end of the day, Boston's really damn good.

Speaker 3 (18:31):
Beat them in Boston, to the Celtics over the Cavaliers,
And when the dust settles, the Cleveland Cavaliers are not
gonna be the best team in the Eastern Conference.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
The Boston Celtics are.

Speaker 3 (18:39):
So when the Rockets and Celtics play for the championship,
wink wink, we'll be going to Boston for a week
as compared to going to Cleveland, Ohio. What else is happening? Oh,
there is a little bit of chatter about Dion Sanders
and whether or not the Cowboys draft Chadure. Would he

(19:01):
go to Dallas? Now, Michael Irvin was on I want
to say, was he on? He was on somebody's radios?
Was it Colin Coward show? Do we have the SoundBite
of that? We do not, Okay, I think he was
on Colin Coward and he was basically asked, would Dion
think of taking the job in Dallas, if shredor Sanders,

(19:23):
and in typical Michael Irvin fashion, because I don't know
if he knows, if he really has if he's just
trying to be it's just trying to be in a bit.
But he wouldn't say yes, that's a done deal. No,
it wouldn't be a done deal. But he basically was like,
I have it on good authority, and he's basically just
ripping off of what Adam Schefter says. It gave off
the impression that, uh, that Dion would go there. Now

(19:49):
Jerry Jones has never had, at least since Bill Parcells
was coaching the Cowboys, a.

Speaker 2 (19:56):
Real headstrong it's me or.

Speaker 3 (20:00):
It's my way or the highway philosophy about running their coaches.
I can't imagine Dion Sanders acquiescing to anything that Jerry
Jones would do as a general manager except to say,
this is my team. You can be the general manager
on paper, but I'm going to crap this team for myself.

Speaker 2 (20:19):
It feels very oil and waterish.

Speaker 3 (20:22):
But if you're the Dallas Cowboys and you're a Dallas
Cowboy fan, don't you need something to kind of ruffle
the feathers of that organization which has been largely dormant
since the championship years we're going on, you know, speaking
of thirty years, that's thirty years for them too. Wouldn't
that be the smart thing to do is for Jerry
to say, you know what, maybe my time has passed
and maybe I need to get some fresh blood of

(20:43):
fresh philosophy in. If you're the Cowboys, why wouldn't you
try that? Because say what you will. And I look,
I've never been a huge fan of Deon Sanders the player, yes,
the coach and the boisterous coach. No, but facts or facts,
he took a program in Colorado that no one, I
mean no one cared about college football and there got

(21:03):
a legitimate chance to play for the Big Twelve championship
and a legitimate chance of being the College Football playoff
and no one two years would ago would have possibly
said that when he took the job away from Jackson State.
All Right, So that's kind of the headlines of the day. Also,
a Dana Brown spoke on Astroline last night, and I'm wondering.

Speaker 2 (21:22):
If we're gonna get any fresh material from that, meaning,
did he really give us a little glimpse into how
things are with Alex Sprigman, except the generic We're talking
to him every day. We'll let you figure that out.

Speaker 3 (21:34):
But yes, when we'd return h it'll be math story
time and I'm gonna have to clean some of it
up just for the sake of history. But if you've
never heard my post night championship story for the nineteen
ninety four Championship, I will pass it along. Seven one
three two one two five seven NAINTI. Seven one three
two one two five seven NINTI. It is the Matt

(21:55):
Thomas Show with Ross Ross. He's out this week and
Chris Gordy's gonna stop by in a few minutes. But

Speaker 2 (23:14):
Programming stuff. That's fine.

Speaker 3 (23:16):
He'll join us eventually because you know he's always thirsted
for more airtime, but he's always gone.

Speaker 2 (23:20):
I'm very busy doing something, so I give him a
chance for st Maritime. You can't hang out with us.

Speaker 3 (23:23):
But he'll actually be a long e may docus with
his shut show ball mask up today is at eleven thirty,
but I got time for that. It's also at the
same time we have a believe it or not and
guess what I have just decided tonight the Rockets take
on the Indiana Pacers, and today's edition, and believe or not,
we'll be focusing on that ninety three ninety fourteen. The

(23:46):
first person that wins I'm believing it or not today
is gonna get We're gonna get my tickets for tonight's game.

Speaker 2 (23:53):
Those are good seats. Connor's gonna find out about it too.

Speaker 3 (23:57):
Connor actually asked for a pair of my tickets, and
he needn't asked for like a you know, a game
against uh, you know, the Kings or the Wizards. He
went right for the for the the Juggular. He you
went right for the Los Angeles Lakers. I asked far
enough at advance I.

Speaker 2 (24:15):
Thought you did.

Speaker 3 (24:16):
I'm just gonna tell you that your fellow Saint Thomas
alum Cameron Tom is not particularly happy with you right now.

Speaker 2 (24:22):
Well, that's my first time asking for the take you did.
You to go good.

Speaker 3 (24:25):
So if you want to win my tickets tonight for
the Rockets and the Pacers, we'll have that for you.
First person that wins I'm believe it or not today
is going to get that seven one three two one
two be able to go. So don't don't take my
tickets and then not be able to go seven one three, two,
one two, five, seven and eighty.

Speaker 2 (24:40):
You find some good storytime music?

Speaker 5 (24:43):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (24:43):
Yeah? Do you want some like classical background music? Or
you want a little breezing something closer is? Are you
gonna go breezing? Orre you just gonna go something close
to it?

Speaker 6 (24:51):
Uh?

Speaker 7 (24:52):
You know what?

Speaker 2 (24:52):
We could just do breezon. That's that's good. That's good
plastic all right? This is uh and again, Uh, I
don't think.

Speaker 3 (24:58):
I'll ever mention the story again because I thin I
think after a while you stopped celebrating anniversaries unless you're married.
But since the Rockets are celebrating the thirtieth anniversary, we'll
do it here too. The year was nineteen ninety four.
It was in June and the Rockets were playing Game
seven of the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks,

(25:20):
and a young twenty two year old Matt Thomas was
the arena announcer for the Houston Rockets, and the Rockets,
of course beat the Knicks. John Starks had a terrible
game number seven, and it was time to celebrate said championship.
Where traveled that I was invited to go to a

(25:46):
postgame party with the Rockets at a place called Little Papadoe,
which is now I think, just an empty facility at
Sebron Kirby and Richmond.

Speaker 2 (25:56):
Papasitos is still there, but Papado is not well. The
night before I was hanging out with some people.

Speaker 3 (26:05):
Guy used to work at Channel thirteen and he had
a friend of his and this friend had it brought
up and his friend was a female.

Speaker 2 (26:11):
Her name was Ronda.

Speaker 3 (26:14):
So I got to know John who was the sportscaster
in Ronda, and they were going to go to their
game seven. I don't know if he was working in
or just got tickets, whatever the case, and Ronda was
there too, and then Ronda said, Hey, what are you
doing after the game? I said, well, I got invited
to the Rockets championship party.

Speaker 2 (26:33):
You want to come with me? She says, of course
I do.

Speaker 3 (26:37):
So we the Rockets win the championship, celebrate, and it's
probably got to be ten thirty eleven o'clock, eleven thirty
night and the time I was working as a morning
producer on the Dan Patrick radio show, not the national
Dan Patrick, the local one who has our Lieutenant Governor.

Speaker 2 (26:52):
I thought, man, I'm not going to get much sleep.
But you know what, it's a party. It's a championship night.
The Rockets invited me to this party at Little Papadot.
Have to go for a little ball, right, So Ron
and I get there.

Speaker 3 (27:03):
I parked my car in the parking lot between Little
Papado and Papasitos, which is that parking space is still
there after all these years. We get inside, the Little
Poppado and the Pappas families pouring you know, they were
pouring drinks, but by the time we got there, there
were no more. They ran out of alcohol because there
were so many people there, so all they had left

(27:26):
was bottles of champagne. So they handed Ron the bottle
of champagne, and they handed me a bottle of champagne.
No glass, just the bottle. So I proceeded to chug
basically an entire bottle of champagne in a very short
period of time. And throughout this partying, the trophy was there.

(27:48):
Some of the most of the players are there, not
all of them, but some of them were. I I
don't even think a Keem was there. And during this
time I kept looking at my watch, going God it's
twelve fifteen in the morning, it's twelve thirty, it's twelve,
it's one o'clock, one thirty, and I'm like, you know what,
I can still get into my car, go back to
my apartment and sleep three or four hours to get up,

(28:10):
take a shower, and go to the radio station and
produce the show the next morning. For Dan, Well, when
you've finished off a bottle of champagne in about fifteen minutes,
an entire bottle decision is the time got off kilter
a little bit, and I was enjoying myself, and so

(28:30):
it was Ronda. So after a while, I'm still in
my Rockets tie. I wore a rockets tie of blue
shirt and khankis, and it was to a point where
I was really blank faced, I mean, out of my
mind drunk.

Speaker 2 (28:48):
And it's like two fifteen, two thirty in the morning.

Speaker 3 (28:50):
So Rond and I finally leave Papado after the party
was kind of wrapping up, and I get to my
car and Rond and I express our affection for each other.

Speaker 2 (29:06):
She leaves the car and then I immediately.

Speaker 3 (29:11):
After she left, I start to vomit over and over
and over again because I had had too much to drink.
In fact, I vomited so much that I vomited on
my left side of my shirt, on my sleeve, not
the whole thing, but enough to clearly tell it was vomit.
Then I was in the in the driver's seat in
my car, and I passed out. Little did I know

(29:34):
until I woke up the next few hours later that
the right side car door was still was open and
you could hear the ding ding ding ding ding of
your car door being opened.

Speaker 2 (29:45):
This is in the middle of the night and essentially central.

Speaker 3 (29:48):
Houston, Texas, on the night of the championship party. And
I then realized that in my mix of trying to
get clothes on clothes off, you can fill out the
details that I took my wallet out of my pants,
and my wallet and my paycheck there was not direct
deposit back then was in the passenger seat of the vehicle.

(30:10):
So somebody could not only have robbed me, taken my car,
thrown me out of my car, but taking my wallet
and my paycheck.

Speaker 2 (30:18):
None of that happened.

Speaker 3 (30:18):
Because we were the safest place on earth in nineteen
ninety four after a Rockets championship. So I'm passed out.
I got vomited on my left sleeve. I just had
a special moment with Ronda. Then I wake up at
six o'clock in the morning and the radio show starts
at six point thirty, and I'm like, what am I

(30:41):
supposed to do. I'm in the same clothes that I
was in the night before, sweat, vomit, other things. So
I said, you know what, I'm going to go to work.
So and again it was I would not advise this
for any of you to do this, But I basically

(31:01):
drove drunk from Kirby in six ' ten to Gribuan
fifty nine to Iten and Darry Ashford, where I walk
in and Dan says, what the hell happened to you?
And I tried to explain it, but I was still
really drunk. I said, look, I cannot go onto air,
and producers showed that he goes, that's fine, but you
gotta stay around for one segment. So they brought me

(31:23):
in the studio and started asking me questions about the game.
I had no idea what the hell happened during the game.
I knew that we won, I knew about the party,
and I brought up Ronda's name and they noticed the
vomit on my shirt. They noticed I was wearing the
exact same stuff, and they just kept laughing over and
over and over again, and I'm blank faced what they're

(31:45):
supposed to do, So they let me go after being
on their show for one segment. My roommate at the
time was a co worker of mine. We get in
the car at darry ash for in I ten. All
we got to do is go to Wart road Balls.
I dry heave three times between darry Ashford and Word.
We had to literally get off the freeway. I'm so

(32:07):
incredibly sick. He picks me up out of the car.
We go back to our apartment and we all had
an apartment with meeting two other guys. I fall asleep.
I get up about eleven thirty twelve o'clock. I turned
the radio on, which was seven hundred at the time,
and they're.

Speaker 2 (32:22):
Replaying the interview over and over again and they're laughing
their ass off. Apparently they're playing in like every seventy
five to ninety minutes because people kept hearing about me
going on the radio blank faced with.

Speaker 3 (32:36):
Bodily fluids and sweat and vomit all over my clothes.
The next day, the Houston Post, which was around at
the time. They put a story out about the Rockets
championship party at Little Poppado and they said Matt Thomas,
a re announcer for the Rockets, was definitely there. He

(32:57):
can chronicle the story on the Damn Patrick radio show.

Speaker 2 (32:59):
The next day. So, needless to say.

Speaker 3 (33:04):
Now fast forwarding really quick. I later that year, I
meet my fan. I have a girlfriend who wants up
being my fiancee, who now I've been married twenty seven
years too. We go to Vegas for a long weekend.
I'm in the line at the airport. This is for
Continental Airlines to show you how far far back this is.

(33:25):
And the listener sees me and says, are you Matt Thomas?

Speaker 2 (33:29):
And I said, yes, I am, and I said. They
was like, how's Vegas at a good time?

Speaker 3 (33:32):
I says, and this girl says back to me, is
this Ronda?

Speaker 2 (33:37):
Right in front of Kim. It was highly embarrassing, and
that was really.

Speaker 3 (33:44):
The last time I've ever brought up Ronda's story in
great to tell in the public airways, because every time
Kim hears about Ronda, She's like.

Speaker 2 (33:50):
Uh huh uh huh, and what.

Speaker 3 (33:55):
So that's my thirtieth anniversary story, that's unbelievable. And every
time I drive by Kirby and eat it little at Papasi,
little Papasitos, and look at that building that used to
be a little Papa. Do I think of a championship
night being handled a bottle of champagne, meeting Ronda, vomiting

(34:16):
all over myself, driving to work and doing one segment
of radio.

Speaker 2 (34:21):
And that's my nineteen ninety four championship story, all the
good old days. I think if the Rockets winning championship again,
I might do it again.

Speaker 3 (34:32):
But I'm much wiser than I was, say when I
was twenty two years old, And that is mad story time.

Speaker 2 (34:38):
All right. Gorneau is in. We're gonna quiz him about
how the hell this college football playoff thing works. Rockets
conversations certainly have for grabs. We have shut your bum
ass up at eleven thirty today. Come on in and
join us seven one three two one two five seven
natis seven to one three two one two five seven ninety.
If you want to visit with us on Twitter, you

(34:58):
may do that as well at sports MPT, at sports RV,
and at Chris Gordy. It is ten forty six and
at Sports Talk seven ninety more.

Speaker 4 (35:07):
Matt Thomas now on Sports Talk seven ninety All right,
time is ten fifty.

Speaker 7 (35:19):
Show.

Speaker 2 (35:20):
No, all right, I'm here to save the show. That's
an honor to have you in here.

Speaker 3 (35:26):
Gordy guys programming stations all across the state now doing
his locked on SEC. You got like probably fourteen radio
appearances coming up in the next couple of hours too.

Speaker 2 (35:38):
Oh none today.

Speaker 3 (35:39):
What How's Montgomery, Alabama gonna live without the Chris Gordy talk?

Speaker 2 (35:43):
Got a lot to talk about.

Speaker 3 (35:45):
Yeah, all right, We're gonna have you give the audience
in the eleven o'clock hour a college football playoff to Toro.
Because I think I'm not the only one that's confused
about this. Okay, all right, and I want you to
do it. You know how it goes. This book there's
like those books for dummies. Yeah, I want you to absolutely,
really slowly say how it works. Because I have tried

(36:05):
to do a little bit of due Dillan just on it.
I think I know what it is, but then I'm
still wrong when I figure out who's gonna be and
who's gonna be honest it.

Speaker 8 (36:11):
So it's a lot like the NBA Cup when you
have to explain it to the fans.

Speaker 3 (36:15):
Yeah, it's not the best I know, all right, So
Gordon's gonna be in for hanging out with us for
a while. We got to shut your ball mass up.
Now you this will be your first time in on this.
You got some of you want to tell me to
shut their bo masses out.

Speaker 2 (36:24):
I got a whole laundry.

Speaker 3 (36:25):
Okay, you just keep thinking about that list right now.
We'll have that for you coming. I've got a couple
of folks that want to say hi. I will talk
some rockets. We've got the Texans back on the field
this week against the Titans, college football, Dion Sanders and
Dallas rumors, and.

Speaker 2 (36:38):
A whole lot of more.

Speaker 3 (36:39):
Plus Dana Brown spoke yesterday on the special edition of
astrolim will play some of those sound bites as well.
Right now to the phones, we go. Roger on seven
ninety and ten fifty two, Roger, good morning.

Speaker 6 (36:51):
One of that one request, could you put a password
on that bad You said that with any kind of
value word on it, So I would definitely do that
falls in that category anyway, man.

Speaker 9 (37:03):
That story was awesome. Ironically, I'll work off itn and
work now.

Speaker 2 (37:08):
Oh really, do you do you dry heaved on your
way to work? Sometimes?

Speaker 5 (37:13):
Or no?

Speaker 6 (37:16):
Only when they talk about things like Yankees when and
you know Dodgers, Yeah, I guess so so on the Rockets, man,
I do you have that?

Speaker 9 (37:28):
Did y'all have that recorded? You know what?

Speaker 2 (37:30):
It's funny.

Speaker 3 (37:31):
People have asked me about that audio and it's nowhere
to be found and I and honestly, I wouldn't have
cared if they would have kept it. Frankly, it would
have been funny because again it was Dann Patrick, who
was our lieutenant governor, was hosting the show. John o'
roley was the co host that day May he rest
and those two guys were just throwing things at me,

(37:52):
like what was the final score of the game? And
I couldn't tell them. All I could tell them was
who's at the party, how long I was there for,
how much I drank? And then I brought up the
girl's name, and that's when everything. And they just made
fun of the fact that I had so much vomit
on the left side of my shirt. They're like the
shirt could walk on its own and it had a
combination of a variety of very bad fluids on it.

Speaker 6 (38:15):
Man, that's not radio goal, that's that's radio platinum.

Speaker 2 (38:19):
I mean, anybody, anybody that listened to me back then
as a very young sportscaster, still to this day, will say, hey,
I was listening in the car the day that that happened.

Speaker 3 (38:30):
So in people, it's in people's memories. That's as far
as I know. I don't think there's any audio of
that to be found anywhere.

Speaker 10 (38:39):
Man.

Speaker 6 (38:40):
Yeah, I missed the old summity and you didn't have
that distinct smell to it. I think the I think
the fondest memory I have is still Gino's saying stop
the f and clop during the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (38:51):
Against you Jab. Absolutely, yeah, it was crazy.

Speaker 9 (38:55):
All right, guy, I have a good break.

Speaker 3 (38:56):
Dad, Thank you very much. Appreciate it. Yeah, we will.
We'll go back and play the lineups I had. You
can listen. I don't think my voice changed a whole
lot because I was twenty two and I was always trying.

Speaker 2 (39:07):
To deepen my voice as much as I could.

Speaker 3 (39:09):
So it's been thirty years, but I think I sound
pretty much the same. We'll play the lineups a little
bit later on the show. Let's go to Cougar Chris
at ten fifty four. Chris, what's a good word.

Speaker 5 (39:21):
I am one of those people that listened to you
in the car that morning, and that's my first memory
of you, Matt Thomas, I know, and I remember I
remember you going look at my shirt.

Speaker 2 (39:33):
That's not a good first impression. I apologize for that, Chris. Thankfully.
I haven't matured since then. You're You're great.

Speaker 5 (39:39):
I've been listening, listened to you the whole time you've
been in the city of Houston and stuff. But that
is that is that was a Malcony moment for sure.
If that stuff was still on tape, it went many,
many many awards for great it was.

Speaker 2 (39:53):
I'm glad I did it. I'm you know.

Speaker 3 (39:55):
It's one of those radio memories that when I eventually
called a career, I will always have that day and
I don't regret a thing about it because it was
I was in a celebratory fashion. Obviously, it was something
great sports Houston wise, and I would be happy to
recreate that memory again if we ever get out with
the Rockets.

Speaker 5 (40:11):
I know I was going to say one thing about
the Houston Cougar's.

Speaker 2 (40:15):
Blue uniforms this week.

Speaker 5 (40:16):
You know they are absolutely gorgeous. And I was against
it last year because I'm just bleep red and white
completely Yeah, but when I heard when I heard it
made Amy Matt, I said, we got to do it
every year, do anything to tick her off of taking
the oilers up there, and especially when she wore the
oiler uniforms against the Texans, I go, yeah, this girl,
this girl, We'd just rub this into her as much

(40:36):
as we can. So but love you, Matt. We really
enjoyed that that morning. That was one of the best
radio mornings of all time.

Speaker 2 (40:46):
To your voice again, my friend.

Speaker 3 (40:47):
I appreciate listening all these years, and honestly I wish
I did we did an audio I wish we used to.
You know, we used to use real toils and tape recorders.
We didn't nothing was digital. The people loving on you today,
what does this all? Oh, we're celebrating the thirtieth anniversary
of the Rockets tonight. Yeah, so, I mean people hate
me too. Don't worry, Chris. You get the emails.

Speaker 8 (41:06):
If Ross leaves and suddenly it's it's a kiss. Massive, No, it's.

Speaker 2 (41:10):
Not, it's just what else? What else do you want
to get into? What? What do you look at the headlines.
You got the news at noon coming up? What's what's
the number one headline in the news at noon?

Speaker 11 (41:17):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (41:17):
COAG football playoff?

Speaker 12 (41:18):
RS?

Speaker 2 (41:18):
All right, all right, so we come back.

Speaker 3 (41:22):
We're gonna let Chris give us a tutorial about this
because I need the definitive rundown of how the hell
we figure out this damn college football playoff. And if
anybody at this point is getting screwed, seven one three

Speaker 2 (43:48):
We are with you.

Speaker 3 (43:49):
Today until two o'clock. We got shut your bumass up.
In a half an hour. We're going to get some
unleash on all of his Alabama buddies because he loves
Alabama more than life itself.

Speaker 2 (43:58):
They're fun. You get an leash on your own.

Speaker 3 (44:01):
LSU school should tell LSU to shut them Brian Coullen
to shut his bum ass up.

Speaker 2 (44:04):
I mean why because they lose games and lose bad
tough schedule and all the players hate him. No they don't, Yeah,
they do. They're fighting with him during the game. What
the ballmore there? You go? Okay, whatever?

Speaker 3 (44:17):
How about the fact that I was in Detroit last
week and they were talking about this kid that's from Detroit,
like the number one quarterback in the country. Whatever, And
LSU's offering him ten point five in nil money.

Speaker 8 (44:27):
Well, that's Michigan is offering him. Oh what is LSU
offering a little bit less than that? But he's been
firmly committed to LSU. He's the top recruit in the country.
He's been firmly committed to LSU for like the last
year plus. And here comes Michigan in the late hour
and Dave Portnoy from barstool saying we were on the right.
You a bigger check, And it's like, No, Michigan doesn't

(44:48):
develop quarterbacks. LSU does. We got two Heisman Trophy winners,
we got Joe Burrow and Jade Daniels tearing it up.

Speaker 2 (44:53):
Where's j J.

Speaker 8 (44:54):
McCarthy. Oh that's right, his bumb ass is hurt, So
shut up, Mischigan.

Speaker 2 (44:57):
Are you bothered by Joe Burrow's continued? Frost said, hare, No,
it's great. He's putting up.

Speaker 8 (45:02):
He's putting up insanely good numbers, yet his team can't
win games.

Speaker 2 (45:06):
It's not his fault.

Speaker 3 (45:07):
Okay, all right, ladies and gentlemen, I want you to
get a pen and a paper out right now, because
we're going to You're gonna get the ultimate tutorial on
this college football playoffs. So let me say tell you
what I think it is, and you tell me how
close I am without being, and then when I'm wrong,
you stop me.

Speaker 2 (45:23):
Good? All right, Twelve teams in the tournament? Right, Twelve
teams make the college football playoff? Yes?

Speaker 3 (45:29):
One through four are buys, the five plays twelve, the
top four seeds, yes, six plays eleven, seven plays ten,
eight plays nine? And those will we played at college
on the home team's higher seeds stadium.

Speaker 2 (45:42):
Yes, okay, I'm right so far? All right?

Speaker 3 (45:48):
Five conference champions get automatically put in.

Speaker 8 (45:54):
Yes, the what is the power Well, it's the Power
four now because the PAC twelve is no more, right,
and then the highest ranked non power for conference champions.
So in this case, I believe it's Boise from the
Mountain West.

Speaker 3 (46:10):
Now you gotta stop me here for a second, are
we I don't think I don't think it's exactly is it?

Speaker 2 (46:15):
Automatically, Power four gets in.

Speaker 8 (46:18):
It's the highest ranked of the of the big conferences.
So like if if so we have, we will have
a Big ten champ, we will have an SEC champ
for sure. For sure we will have an accare, we
will have a Big twelve champ. Then you get into
the American, the Mountain West, all that, right, they only

(46:39):
get one big dog. The highest ranked of those champs
will be in.

Speaker 2 (46:43):
Okay, so let's say that.

Speaker 3 (46:44):
Let's say that boys, Let's say the Mountain West and
the MAC have higher rankings than one of the other
four power.

Speaker 8 (46:51):
And that team Boise would go In this case, Boise
is nine and one right now leading the Mountain West.
They are ranked ahead of I don't know whoever you
want to say, Like, let's say the Army. Let's say
ACC champ is Miami and they end up with two losses.
If Boise's right ahead of them, Boise would get into

(47:12):
the top four, and Miami is the a SEC champ
would be outside of the top four.

Speaker 3 (47:18):
But are you telling me that every Power four conference
champion gets in automatically.

Speaker 8 (47:23):
Yes, the conference champ is in. They're not necessarily a
top four seats.

Speaker 2 (47:27):
Okay, I'm okay with that.

Speaker 3 (47:29):
Yeah, so you're telling me that even the stupid right, like,
we shouldn't do this.

Speaker 2 (47:33):
This is stupid.

Speaker 3 (47:33):
Like if if let's say Colorado won the conference and
Missoni's out there twelve and it makes Big twelve and
they ain't four losses.

Speaker 8 (47:41):
Yes they would, they would be in, but they're not
going to be a top four seat. They're gonna be
that large team.

Speaker 2 (47:46):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (47:46):
So the four the four power fours get automatics no
matter what their record is. Now, they don't get automatic seating,
they just get an automatic invite.

Speaker 8 (47:53):
Right, The four highest ranked conference champions get one, two, three, four.

Speaker 2 (48:02):
Four highest rank. So if you are awesome, the odds
are if you're winning the Big Ten, you're ranked high.
If you're winning the SEC, you're ranked high.

Speaker 3 (48:10):
So if you are a one lost team in another
one of these power conferences.

Speaker 8 (48:14):
Like Ohio State, who is currently the number two team
in the country in nine to one, they're the five.

Speaker 2 (48:19):
Seed in the bracket because they didn't win the conference.

Speaker 8 (48:21):
Because they're well, they're projecting Oregon will win the Big
Ten and Oregon will be in as the one seed undefeated.

Speaker 2 (48:27):
So you could have a sucky acc champion, get a
buye over a far superior second team in another loss.

Speaker 8 (48:35):
SEC teams. Yeah, this is what I hate about it.
I said this from the get go, and he started
this bull crap. It's all trying to be fairness and
to get the conference chairs and eighties to agree to
this and the school presidents. They had to do this
to be quote unquote fair. But to me, it's very simple.
If the conversation is the college football playoff, we want
the twelve best.

Speaker 2 (48:55):
Teams, it should just be the playoff committee.

Speaker 5 (48:57):
Matt.

Speaker 2 (48:57):
Every week does ranks, gives you their rank exact one
through twenty five. At the end of the season, they
give you their final one through twenty five. Shouldn't one
through twelve be the twelve best teams? Ah, but no,
this team's fifty, but they're the highest ranked non power
for conference chips, so they get in. And it's like,
what are we doing here? This is absolutely asinine.

Speaker 8 (49:17):
This is all to appease Liberty because Liberty went undefeated.

Speaker 2 (49:22):
Hey give me Liberty two lane.

Speaker 10 (49:25):
Yeah, take care of.

Speaker 2 (49:25):
The American I know they're ranked eighteenth. They should get in.
It's like, this is just take one through twelve.

Speaker 8 (49:32):
It's not that hard and if it ends up see
here's the problem though, well that might be success. He
see teams, So what it's how it's it's how it's ranked.
It's the best teams you ever noticed.

Speaker 2 (49:42):
Connor, how emotionally he gets about college football, it's just
asinine when you have to sit here and explain it there,
I am.

Speaker 8 (49:49):
They're like, well Tennessee, Tennessee is eleven in the rankings,
but right now they would be out.

Speaker 2 (49:53):
Why are they out they're the eleventh best team. Well,
because other teams.

Speaker 3 (49:57):
Jumped them, So why are they out if we're talking
about one in our team jumping, would they be twelve?

Speaker 8 (50:03):
No, Tennessee is out because BYU, who's ranked fourteenth, would
get in as a they're nine and one. Currently they're
projecting them not to win the Big Twelve, but to
be a to be an at large team that we
get in, or maybe they are projected in the win
the Big twelve, because I don't see another Big twelve
team in here. So BYU would be the twelfth seed

(50:26):
as the Big twelfth champ. So it's stupid. It doesn't
make any sense. It's all this stupid stuff in fairness.

Speaker 2 (50:37):
Okay, So you've got the four. So way, Matt, I thought,
you tell me the big conference champions were guaranteed the
top four spot.

Speaker 8 (50:43):
No, they're not guarant the top four highest ranked conference
champions guaranteed.

Speaker 3 (50:48):
So you're telling me that Boise if his ranked higher,
is going to be in the top four over Bawa.

Speaker 13 (50:53):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (50:53):
So in the On three Sports put this out last night,
the projected playoff bracket based off of last night's college
football playoff rankings. Yes, they are projecting byu wins the
Big twelve. They're the fourteenth ranked team, but they get
the twelfth seed because they're the they're they're a conference champion.

Speaker 2 (51:11):
That's in okay.

Speaker 8 (51:13):
They project Oregon in as the one seed as the
Big ten champ. They project Texas in as the two seeds,
the SEC champ, Miami in is the three seeds, the
Miami as the a SEC champ, and Boise State in
at four as the Mountain West champ, who's currently nine
to one if they went out.

Speaker 3 (51:30):
So those not the non power fives. All they have
to do is hope non power five, non power four
has to hope that their record they're ranked higher, because
and they're gonna get a massive bump up, yes, or
Boise would probably be a twelve or eleven seed.

Speaker 2 (51:44):
They're gonna go all the way up to four because
they are the they're a conference champion, and they have
a higher ranking, higher than the Big twelve champ.

Speaker 8 (51:52):
But it's so stupid. Think about this. This would be
the Acidine way of describing this. In the NCAA tournament,
I don't know who would you've aged places in the
Big twelve. Now, yes, let's say I don't know West
West Virginia's in the Big twelve. S Let's say they
go on a heater in the conference championship and they
win it. Right now, the rule dictates West Virginia gets

(52:13):
a spot in the field of sixty four because right
but this, by this thinking, we would go no, we
make you a one seed. We automatically bring you to
the front of the line because you won your your conference.
That's stupid. That's in no world does that make sense
in the world of college basketball? Why does it make sense?

Speaker 3 (52:28):
In Boise State runs the table and BYU runs the table,
Boise State is going to be ranked higher than Colorado
or higher than maybe.

Speaker 8 (52:36):
Right as of right now, Boise is twelve BYU's fourteen.
I don't know who BYU plays these next two weeks,
but do they have is there a chance for them
to put up a better resume?

Speaker 3 (52:44):
Win these next te We got Houston in two weeks
and the answer, of course is duh.

Speaker 8 (52:48):
Yes, Oh they play at Arizona State this week in
Arizona State's favor.

Speaker 3 (52:54):
Okay, So, since you are our college officionado, yes, you
want to say us the big twelve?

Speaker 2 (53:01):
The mess me just the twelve best teams? Yes, that's
very simple.

Speaker 3 (53:05):
And are you guaranteeing a conference champion a spot in
the top twelve?

Speaker 8 (53:11):
No, it's subjective because, like I don't know, Like we
didn't say that there were years Alabama got into the
four team playoff without winning even playing for an SEC championship. Yeap,
But what was their argument? What we think Bama was
one of the four best teams? Well, then it's just subjective.
Then why are we doing this whole conference champion autoback
and gets it? If it's all just a subjective roll
the dice. Who do we think of the four best teams?

(53:32):
And now who do we think of the twelve best teams?
Why are we rewarding college.

Speaker 2 (53:36):
Boise State one of the best twelve best teams in
college football.

Speaker 8 (53:39):
Probably, but they shouldn't move up to the four seed
or you know, the fourth overall seed.

Speaker 2 (53:45):
Like that's silly. So how about this?

Speaker 3 (53:46):
What if I give you a What if I give
you all the conference champions, the four conference title winners,
and the next highest get in, but they don't get
guaranteed to buy would you be okay with that?

Speaker 8 (53:59):
I just think, like, you have a year like this
year where you have a bunch of you're gonna have
the SEC is likely to have five, ten.

Speaker 2 (54:04):
And two teams.

Speaker 8 (54:06):
Tell me only one of those teams deserves to get in.
I mean, it's my big year, whether they're just they
have you have five or six really good teams from
a conference, We're just gonna leave them.

Speaker 3 (54:15):
Out because all right, I think I figured it out
and for that I thank you so again. If you
are Boise State, you run the table unless the BYU
win against Arizona State moves them up big because they
let's be really honest, b YU beating Houston's gonna do
nothing for him. And would BYU playing Colorado in the
Big Total Championship game help them get a little higher.

Speaker 8 (54:37):
That would Colorado's drank sixteenth right now, okay, BYU's remaining
two games at Wyoming.

Speaker 2 (54:42):
And Oregon State. Don't reward that you mean Boise States games? Yeah,
uh yeah, Boise State. I mean, don't reward that thing
though for.

Speaker 3 (54:52):
That lets them come play, But for them to have
a guaranteed spot bye week is ridiculous.

Speaker 8 (54:58):
And then don't even get me started on the second
or the first round playing on home campuses is awesome.
The next round going to play at neutral site. Like
we figured this out before the season, but there's a world,
Matt where ole Miss fans if ole Miss gets in
at large team. As an at large team, there's a
world where ole Miss would have to play the first
round on the road at Penn State, so all their

(55:19):
fans have to pack up and travel up to state college.
Then the next week would play the second round in Dallas,
Texas in the Cotton Bowl. Then the next week play
in Atlanta or Miami in the final four round, and
then in the championship in Atlanta. Now, at least Oxford
is somewhat proximity to Atlanta and maybe not far from Miami.
It's kind of far to go to Dallas.

Speaker 2 (55:40):
Do you really, like, do you think all fans are
gonna make all four of those trips? Do you think
America cares about eight thousand fans going to those games?

Speaker 8 (55:46):
You get way more than eight thousand. Ole Miss has
never been in a playoff, so they're here all all.

Speaker 3 (55:52):
Miss can't fill it can't filled fifteen thousand seats at
Penn State.

Speaker 2 (55:56):
They're not gonna They're not Penn States. I don't give
them those opportunities, true, but I just well, it's a
big stadium.

Speaker 8 (56:02):
But I just again, I just think it's silly that
we're like asking these fans to travel all over the
country because of corporate sponsors.

Speaker 2 (56:08):
You know what we do? You can you can sit
home and watch it on TV.

Speaker 7 (56:10):
He don't we do?

Speaker 2 (56:11):
We tell the Cotton Bowl screw yourselves.

Speaker 8 (56:12):
We're gonna we're gonna take their sponsors, our sponsor, good Year,
and we're gonna say we're gonna play this game in Oxford.

Speaker 2 (56:17):
Ole Miss hosts Boise State and it's presented by Goodyear.

Speaker 8 (56:21):
So we get the corporate sponsorship out to play them
with college campuses.

Speaker 2 (56:24):
While are we going to these stupid NFL stadiums.

Speaker 3 (56:28):
Hmmm, yeah, I'll have to think about here, eleven fourteen
on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (56:33):
I got, I got Gordy fired up here.

Speaker 3 (56:35):
That's why I was That's why Matt story time was
much more calming and soothing.

Speaker 2 (56:38):
You know, gordiell fired up. I like it. Eleven fourteen,
Sports Talk seven ninty what more Matt Thomas.

Speaker 4 (56:45):
Now on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (56:54):
Time is eleven nineteen.

Speaker 3 (56:55):
It is the Matt Thomas Show at ross our buddy Chris,
Gordy is gonna hang out with us for a better
part of the show.

Speaker 2 (57:00):
We gotta shut your ball mass off. I think you
want to tell a college football playoff to shut their
ball mass up. You gotta something else going.

Speaker 3 (57:05):
I want to I want people to see a side
of you, Gordy that we don't normally hear. That's college
football twenty four to seven. You're insatiable thirst for going
to plays and concerts and uh spaceships and stuff.

Speaker 8 (57:19):
I mean, it's it's not a level playing field at all.
And that's what's so hard about this the NFL. Pretty
level playing field. Some people get a little bit easier schedule,
some get a little bit tougher. But you play your division,
you play you know. So you you play a lot
of the same teams and the NFL's got the most parody. Right,
you finished dead last in one year, the next year
you can be a playoff team. We're seeing it right

(57:40):
now with the Washington Commanders salt last year with the
Houston Texan. It's like very easy to do. In college,
it is not a level playing field. You have Indiana
sitting there undefeated having played zero top twenty five teams.
You have Georgia with two losses, but they've played five
top twenty five teams. I think three of them in
the top ten.

Speaker 3 (57:57):
Tell me when Ohio State wins by three touchdowns on Saturday,
that this Indiana nice storyline is gonna.

Speaker 8 (58:03):
Go away back quest. Yes it has to. Now, if
they win, what the hell are you doing? Then you go, great,
great win, But it still is just one win against
the ranked opponent.

Speaker 3 (58:14):
Well, I think we know they answer that because they're
so highly regarded that it's only going to significantly boost
them up the ladder.

Speaker 8 (58:22):
And on the flip side of Ohio State now has
two losses, but they're going well. They're both the top ten,
number one Oregon and top ten Indiana.

Speaker 2 (58:29):
It's their own we should still be in. How about
this one more thing before he gets phones? What about
the conference championship games.

Speaker 3 (58:37):
You're gonna get a team that's going to lose, and
if it's a big old kambu to mess between who
gets in and who gets out, the one extra game
might actually hurt somebody.

Speaker 8 (58:46):
That's the biggest discussion in the SEC is because the
SEC has a world where you could have five tops,
five ten and two teams. So you're gonna have a
team that's gonna go to Atlanta, lose to say Texas
or Georgia and have a third loss. Do we look
at it and go, well, you have a third loss
one of these other ten and two SEC teams that
didn't play for a championship jumps you? Or do they say,

(59:07):
you know what, hands down, you were the second best
team in the SEC. Regardless of outcome, you were the
second best team.

Speaker 3 (59:12):
You're in if you have five to ten and two
teams and you win that batch of the tiebreaker, because
it's a commluded tiebreaker, it's a real comluded that should
give you the indication that you should not be penalized
for losing that third game.

Speaker 2 (59:28):
I agree, but they just did it to Georgia.

Speaker 8 (59:30):
Last year, Georgia was undefeated going into the SEC Championship game,
lost by seven to Alabama, dropped him out of the
top four.

Speaker 2 (59:38):
So and Baba had a loss. Georgia didn't coming into
the game. It doesn't doesn't.

Speaker 3 (59:43):
That's again, that's not even computer talking, that's human beings
in a room. That didn't make any sense.

Speaker 8 (59:48):
They all contradict each other, and this is the crap
we get into, like every year, they all contradict each other.

Speaker 2 (59:53):
They contradicted themselves.

Speaker 8 (59:54):
Last night, he said, he talked about what a great
that that they think Texas is awesome because Texas, you
know that they've beat everybody except for Georgia, And they
were like, what about Georgia. Georgia beat Texas by fifteen
in Austin. They're like, yeah, but Georgia lost the old Moose.
It's like okay, so like we're gonna we're gonna overlook
a loss here. But then in this other one, that
loss was really a sticking point for us. It's just

(01:00:16):
they pick and choose where they want to put their whatever.
I still think get rid of this damn committee. Take
twelve joes off their couches. I think just average Joe
fan would be a better would have a better thought
process here. Then he's moron sitting in the room.

Speaker 2 (01:00:31):
But you'd have such bias, George school bias. Ward Manual
is fighting for the Big ten. He's the head of
the committee.

Speaker 3 (01:00:38):
Mike and Tombull on seven on eleven twenty three, Mike,
good morning, Hey, good.

Speaker 9 (01:00:43):
Morning, guys. I appreciate you taking my call.

Speaker 14 (01:00:46):
Sure, Gordy was just hitting on the one thing I
wanted to talk about the most, and that is you know,
I'm an A and M grad. I'm going to the
game on the thirtieth and it's gonna be one hundred
and ten thousand people in those tickets are going for
three thousand dollars a pop.

Speaker 2 (01:01:02):
If A and M beats UT.

Speaker 14 (01:01:05):
We are in the SEC title game with two losses.
If we go to that game and lose to Georgia,
we have three losses and we're out of the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (01:01:14):
Are you freaking kidding me? Yep?

Speaker 14 (01:01:16):
And then they would bump an SMU or a BYU
ahead of us.

Speaker 2 (01:01:20):
When you look at the ESPN.

Speaker 14 (01:01:23):
Matrix, the equation of strength of resume, that's the only
thing that should count. They should completely take out the
subjective opinions of people and put a mathematical equation on
this thing.

Speaker 2 (01:01:35):
And that's how you get in because it.

Speaker 9 (01:01:37):
Is very, very clear.

Speaker 3 (01:01:38):
And then when you look at teams that come on, now, yes,
there you go.

Speaker 2 (01:01:42):
Yes, where's the dump button? I gonna hit that whole on.
I don't work in this cherry usually here. Oh you
got it? Okay, I will tell you.

Speaker 8 (01:01:47):
I'm on the game time app is a nice app
to see the bike tickets on to get in the
door for Texas at Texas A and M currently one
three nine one thirteen ninety one. Would you pay thirteen
hundred dollars to go see a regular season college.

Speaker 3 (01:02:07):
Football My son two days ago waited four hours for
a student ticket.

Speaker 2 (01:02:12):
Did he get it? He got it? Which is old.

Speaker 3 (01:02:14):
I don't think it's I mean, honestly, I've heard worst stories.

Speaker 2 (01:02:18):
Right, can they sell it that? I don't know.

Speaker 3 (01:02:23):
But he's but he's a senior and this is this
will be his last game as a student.

Speaker 2 (01:02:28):
I can't imagine him.

Speaker 8 (01:02:29):
Because if they lose the Longhorns, you burn that ticket.
You don't want to remember that game.

Speaker 3 (01:02:37):
Okay, let me ask you this, because we got Aggie's listening.
What if the Aggies sneak in and win these next
two games, what happens to that point.

Speaker 8 (01:02:44):
Well, everybody's putting them on upset alert this weekend at
Auburn because Auburn's played Auburn finally got themselves together this
past week and it's a night game at Jurden here,
and everybody's up in arms about that because they're like,
come on, really, like weird things have at night at Auburn.
And so there's a chance a m could lose this one.

(01:03:05):
But if they don't, if they win this one and
then they beat Texas, they're gonna go to Atlanta and
play possibly either an Alabama or a Georgia, maybe Tennessee
based on how the tie breakers are.

Speaker 2 (01:03:19):
But the Aggies have two losses correct in league No.

Speaker 8 (01:03:24):
One in conference one out of conference Okay, they lost
a Notre Dame in the open and they lost at
South Carolina.

Speaker 2 (01:03:29):
So the Aggies would go to the SEC championship game that's.

Speaker 8 (01:03:33):
For the first time in their history in the SEC
twelve years, to likely play whom That's what I'm saying,
either Georgia or Alabama. I think the tie breakers right
now set up for Alabama, one.

Speaker 3 (01:03:44):
Of those two teams is going to get an automatic spot.
The other one is the best two loss team in
that group, right because the time breakers.

Speaker 8 (01:03:52):
Well they should get in. It goes head to head first.
But here's the problem with head to head. Alabama beat Georgia,
Tennessee beat Alabama. Georgia beat Tennessee. So you got this
weird kind of.

Speaker 3 (01:04:04):
This is exactly what we're gonna have for the rest
of our lives following this because of these mega conferences.

Speaker 2 (01:04:10):
When you put.

Speaker 3 (01:04:10):
Together eighteen teen leagues or sixteen team leagues, everybody should
no one should be surprised that we've got five way ties,
period unless somebody goes undefeated. And look, and the SEC
was not built to go undefeated. There's too many good teams.
You got to be a mega team with no flaws
to go undefeated in the Southeastern Conference. Same thing can

(01:04:32):
be said for the Big Ten for that matter. So
get ready for every year of convoluted five way ties.

Speaker 8 (01:04:39):
Yeah, I just think it's the SEC. There needs to
be more push to go to a nine game conference schedule,
so at least you're playing a little bit more of
the league right now with sixteen teams and you're playing
eight games. You're literally only playing half the league. And
look at the schedule differential from what Oklahoma got and
what Texas got. Texas got all the Slappies and Georgia,

(01:04:59):
Oklahoma got all the Oklahoma got lsu Bama, uh miszoo.
I mean they got like Tennessee, they got all the
tough teams and Texas got nobody. Now here's the other
part of the tie breaker. If there's like a three
or four way tie, the next tiebreaker after you go
head to head and the conference all this is conference
win percentage by your opponents. In that case, Texas would

(01:05:22):
be dead last because they've played the weakest of the
SEC teams. So Texas would get left out, Which.

Speaker 3 (01:05:27):
Is that seems about fair because at some point you've
got to EQUATEE you get you got.

Speaker 2 (01:05:31):
You have to say that playing every SEC opponent isn't
the same.

Speaker 8 (01:05:34):
But Texas argument is, well, we didn't make our conference schedule.
The league decided that we We scheduled top ten Michigan
on the road, the reigning national champson went and beat them.

Speaker 2 (01:05:44):
Not our fault, Michigan, turn on.

Speaker 3 (01:05:45):
But you also you also scheduled what Uel Monroe or
something like that. I mean, you tip what you gotta do.

Speaker 2 (01:05:51):
You know what you gotta do.

Speaker 3 (01:05:52):
If you feel like you have a weak non con
and this is hard because you don't know what your
schedule is that much advanced, you gotta you get a
bull striper, you get if you have a week common schedule,
you get a boss.

Speaker 8 (01:06:01):
Your nine know what the schedule is going to be
the right, But I'd make the case they win schedule. Michigan,
who turned out to be the reigning national champ, did
on paper come into the season. That doesn't That was
one of the marque non conference games.

Speaker 2 (01:06:13):
Now that Michigan's hot garbage, Hey, let's do this. Let's
tell some people to shut their bomb masses up seven

Speaker 2 (01:06:42):
Tell them to shut their bomb masses up.

Speaker 3 (01:06:44):

will not shut up and talk to you over and
over again about stuff you don't care about, how about
telling them ain't nobody got time for that. Seven one

Are we taking a vacation day on that day? So
what do you mean taking a vacation day? You're just
gonna eat McRib for everything old day. For those of
you who rip on my love of McRib, shot your

Speaker 3 (01:08:54):
Come on, people, stop making fun of my macrib love.
It's delicious sauce, it's a beautiful pork pass. It's got onions,
it's on a toasted but it's got pickles. It's America's treat.
Let make crab and if you don't like.

Speaker 2 (01:09:05):
It, I say, shut your ball mess up, leave me alone,
let me be my bee shit sobam mass up? Man Connor?
What do you got this week? Anybody got time for?
Last week?

Speaker 15 (01:09:15):
Everybody went in those justin Timberlake tickets. If nobody, if
nobody want, I would have got them. So anybody got
time for that?

Speaker 2 (01:09:20):
Hey, nobody get I want to go to the show.
Do you want my Rockets tickets tonight?

Speaker 13 (01:09:24):
No?

Speaker 2 (01:09:24):
I'm busy, Okay, fair enough, I'm.

Speaker 3 (01:09:26):
Giving I'm gonna give away a parent my rocket tickets
tonight for the first winner, I believe it or not.
All things about the ninet three ninety four championship team nice.
And by the way, people are calling off air asking
for those tickets right now? Aren't you listen to the
damn show? One fifty?

Speaker 2 (01:09:38):
Let's go?

Speaker 3 (01:09:39):
Anybody got time for you? Trying to prize whore at
eleven thirty five in the morning.

Speaker 7 (01:09:43):
Hey, nobody get tab.

Speaker 3 (01:09:45):
Exactly second that seven one three two one two five seven, Honey, Chris,
what's the matter with you?

Speaker 2 (01:09:49):
Umm?

Speaker 8 (01:09:52):
The Pro Football Hall of Fame and else, they're twenty
five modern era semi finalists of the Pro Football Hall
of Fame class at twenty twenty five to the yes,
six first year eligible candidates have made the cut. I'm sorry,
but if Eli freaking Manning ends up a first ballot

(01:10:12):
Hall of Famer, there's a problem with the Hall of Fame.

Speaker 2 (01:10:16):
He's a very good, good player.

Speaker 8 (01:10:19):
Two Super Bowl wins, awesome, but he is not a
He's definitely not a first ballot Hall of Famer.

Speaker 2 (01:10:24):
I don't know if he's a Hall of Famer period.

Speaker 8 (01:10:27):
Everybody touting Eli out there, stupid Giants, fans, Alex Middleton
on the bus, I see you.

Speaker 2 (01:10:33):
Shut your bumbass up, shuts obumass up. Well across station
violence over here?

Speaker 16 (01:10:38):
What's up?

Speaker 2 (01:10:38):
What's the matter with you on that? Would you put
him in the Hall of Fame? No, he's in the
Hall of fairy Good. It's stupid.

Speaker 3 (01:10:44):
By the way Manning cast I'm sure it's lovely. It's
been those with the third year of this. Why don't
y'all stay in one studio?

Speaker 2 (01:10:53):
So it's not that what did you say? Couldn't hear you?
What was that delay? Anybody got time for delays like that?

Speaker 7 (01:10:59):
Ain't nobody got to?

Speaker 8 (01:11:00):
Oh and throw in the guests. Jim Gaffigan the other night,
Good Lord, was that awful? I was waiting around for
JJ Watt. He didn't come until the fourth quarter. Yeah,
Jim Gaffigan the entire third quarter with jokes that just
fell flat every time.

Speaker 2 (01:11:15):
Stupid.

Speaker 3 (01:11:16):
I don't think i've seen Jim Gaffigan encuncer before, or
have you ever seen him on like a Netflix pashion an.

Speaker 8 (01:11:21):
Yeah, he's fine. Get a whole thing on bean burritos
a couple of years ago.

Speaker 2 (01:11:26):
Oh is that right? Yeah?

Speaker 8 (01:11:27):
His whole stick was Taco Bell. Every item was meat, cheese, tortilla.

Speaker 3 (01:11:33):
Five ingredients, basically create the entire menu at Taco Bell.

Speaker 2 (01:11:37):
Yeah, but he was not good.

Speaker 8 (01:11:39):
People all who are at social media are like, this
is bad, and then you do and this comes on
the heels of Belichick, who's fine but brings no energy
at all. Like JJ Watt was the star of the
Manding cast the other night.

Speaker 2 (01:11:52):
He was actually bringing good stories and intel in the
Texans and all that. All right, I need rolling on
this I was.

Speaker 3 (01:12:01):
I got to Chicago late Saturday night and I got
out of my Uber and there was a bellman waiting there.

Speaker 2 (01:12:08):
And I just had a small bag in my briefcase.

Speaker 3 (01:12:11):
I didn't need any help getting to my elevator to
go up to the main lobby floor. The bellman insisted
on taking my bags. I said, sir, I got it.

Speaker 2 (01:12:22):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (01:12:24):
He takes my bags of the elevator, says, is there
anything else I can help you with? I said, no,
I remember I told you I had it from here.
He puts his hand out. Oh no, So let me
tell you, bellman, if I say I got it, that
probably means either I don't want your help or I
don't have a five spot to give you. Because if
I would have said to you, hey, I need your help,

(01:12:45):
but had no cash for him to give him, and
I do usually carry cash, He's going to think I'm
a jerk. I was trying to save him a few
extra calories and energy by not by taking my own bag,
so I don't embarrass myself or the guy for him
taking my bag and getting nothing in return. So ain't
nobody got time for for Bellman to take my bag's

(01:13:07):
elevator knowing that I wasn't gonna tip you from the jump.

Speaker 2 (01:13:10):
Hey, nobody got to you pull the home alone. You
give him a stick of gum. I'm not doing that.
It's ridiculous.

Speaker 8 (01:13:18):
Yeah, I'm I'm very anti. I'm pulling. I'm bringing my
own luggage. Get out of here.

Speaker 3 (01:13:22):
If I sometimes need your help, which I'm all about that.
I just normally I carry cash because I'm not Adam Clinton.
But I didn't have any, and I was like, this
is not gonna end. Well, do you go what's your
venmo'll venmo?

Speaker 2 (01:13:37):
No, I don't do that.

Speaker 3 (01:13:38):
Or I used to back in the day, say I
got you next time, and they're like, uh huh, whatever
you ask.

Speaker 8 (01:13:42):
You know, my wife tip said, like she tips a
pick up, like picking up food. She had like the
fifteen she tipped twenty percent the other night.

Speaker 2 (01:13:52):
I'll take it. I'm like, what did they do? They
just handed you the food. They didn't do you any service.
I'm about the walk up counter. Do you tip on
the walk That's That's what I'm saying. It was like
a walk up. It was, Yeah, I don't think you do.
Just hand me the food. How about this when you
drop your car off, do you tip the valet guy
when you drop it off and pick him up? I
was I only tip on the pickup.

Speaker 8 (01:14:12):
Always on pickup. Yeah, you have done the job yet
I'm not tipping you for anything. Yeah, I mean there is.
You do get a salary, a wage for doing something.
You're not just sitting there on tips alone. I will
say too, there are some restaurants in this town that
do the almost mandatory valet right and it's so unnecessary.

Speaker 15 (01:14:33):
I experienced that last week in the manatory valet, and
then you parked right in front of like I saw
the spoilers right there.

Speaker 2 (01:14:37):
I could have pulled in Schmuckers on Shepherd. You're a
good man.

Speaker 8 (01:14:41):
There's a parking lot right there. I will park and
walk to ten feet. I do not need to valet.
It's a wing bar. I don't need valet.

Speaker 2 (01:14:49):
Should you charge?

Speaker 3 (01:14:49):
How about this for restaurants that charge you to park
in their parking lot or am I? If I'm going
to a said restaurant, you gotta validate, like mail me
empo giving me an option to park for free. I'm
going to your restaurant to spend a bowload of money.
You're gonna You're gonna.

Speaker 2 (01:15:05):
Get me some extra dollar and turn me for extra
just to park in your restaurant. Anybody got time for that?

Speaker 3 (01:15:11):
That's what I was talking about earlier. I loved when
I was when I was a kid, Chris going to
the summit.

Speaker 2 (01:15:15):
You parked for free.

Speaker 3 (01:15:16):
You paid your ticket prices for concerts or for a
Rockets game, or for the circus. They said, you know what,
we understand. You got to get there parking our lot.
You gotta park everywhere downtown. You gotta park now anywhere,
any stadium.

Speaker 2 (01:15:30):
You gotta park.

Speaker 3 (01:15:31):
Whoever walks the Energy Stadium for a game, I mean
without it, potentially seriously injuring yourself.

Speaker 2 (01:15:37):
I've seen people do it for the rodeo. They park
on the other side of six ten. Well, then you
got you got serious damage of your vehicle. Carry a
knife with you while you make that.

Speaker 3 (01:15:45):
Oh by the way, going back to that last week
astronom Conservatory, shoot jo bum ass up. Nobody wants a
damn refurbished After that many brick, let's chick, let's chisel.

Speaker 2 (01:15:57):
You know we had to do.

Speaker 3 (01:15:58):
We ought to all volunteer shifts. Put a hard hat
on and go knock it. Get a crane, Dame, just
and just do whatever we have to do.

Speaker 8 (01:16:05):
If Jerry Jones's place has things falling from the ceiling,
what do you think is gonna happen in the astronome?

Speaker 2 (01:16:11):
Got that whole thing, That whole thing's gonna fall apart. People.
It's absolutely terrible.

Speaker 8 (01:16:15):
Speaking of Jerry Jones, putting him in here his comments
after the game the other night saying Jerry has has
Mike McCarthy lost the locker room. He has not lost
the locker room. I don't know where that's coming from.
That's ridiculous.

Speaker 7 (01:16:28):
Jerry.

Speaker 8 (01:16:28):
You're three and seven, You've lost five in a row.
The Cowboys suck. Mike McCarthy's lost the locker room.

Speaker 2 (01:16:33):
Micah Persons just basically said, you lost, he's lost the
locker room. Well, that's not sense, Jerry Jones, shut your
boo mess up. Yeah. And by the way, America for
insisting that you like the Dallas Cowboys. Still their television
ratings are astronomical, America, shut your bum ass up about that.

Speaker 3 (01:16:52):
Stop watching the Cowboys every damn week. The Cowboys are
on the big game. Week because you watch them for
what you want to see?

Speaker 2 (01:16:59):
Donald carry the ball ten times for thirty nine yards?

Speaker 7 (01:17:02):
How what you want?

Speaker 2 (01:17:03):
Could I throw one more in?

Speaker 9 (01:17:04):
Here?

Speaker 12 (01:17:04):
You got?

Speaker 2 (01:17:04):
We up? We got a whole half hour. Let's go.

Speaker 8 (01:17:06):

the far left of my third car garage. I get
letters in them all the time.

Speaker 2 (01:19:50):

Jabari Chase. But look, you guys should I don't care
if you're from Louisiana, from Houston.

Speaker 2 (01:22:09):
You're from Dallas Water.

Speaker 19 (01:22:12):
Stop trying to rip on Eli Manning because number one,
they called him a pump when he was young and
he was inexperienced.

Speaker 9 (01:22:18):
But when he.

Speaker 19 (01:22:19):
Finally brought down everybody, and he brought down Tom Brady
not once, twice, so top secure a championship for the
Giants as a representative of the Giants. He may be
not a Hall of Fame quarterback, but he's still damn good.
And if you want two championships, I guess that criteria
is enough for him to be elected to the Hall

(01:22:40):
of Fame over there and Canton.

Speaker 2 (01:22:42):
So please, Chris Gordy.

Speaker 12 (01:22:44):

Hall of Famer in your words, yeah, he was good.
He's not a Hall of Famer. It's not the Hall
of very good. It's the Hall of Fame. Eli Manning's
not a hole.

Speaker 8 (01:23:01):
And by the way, I think Ocu Minyora and Michael
Strahead had a little something to do about taking down
Tom Brady.

Speaker 2 (01:23:06):
Thank you very much James for joining us here on
Sports Talk seven ninety New Yours.

Speaker 3 (01:23:21):

What's the matter with you?

Speaker 7 (01:23:35):
Oh? Man?

Speaker 2 (01:23:36):
So I'm sitting here listening to you, and then I
heard that guy.

Speaker 5 (01:23:40):
I actually work for an h a management company, and
I'm citing people right now.

Speaker 4 (01:23:46):
For broken facia and trash cands.

Speaker 2 (01:23:50):
But it's really the board members. These board members hound
us all the time.

Speaker 6 (01:23:57):
My neighbor across the street, they don't put their trash
cans up.

Speaker 2 (01:24:01):
I need them to be sighted, and so here I

I was gonna get every seventy five year old mad
at me.

Speaker 8 (01:24:27):
I thought he was gonna yell at us about yeah,
keeping our trash cans out, seriously.

Speaker 3 (01:24:32):
I you know what, I spend lots of money on
my yard I had. I just had new flowers put
in a couple of days ago. I take care of
the trees thanks to UH Affordable Tree Service. I make
sure everything is good.

Speaker 2 (01:24:44):
If I take the cans and put them on the
side of my house, my grass dies and then the
water gets in there and it becomes muddy.

Speaker 3 (01:24:53):
Just let me have my third car area. That's all
I'm asking for. Everything else i'll pay. I'll do follow
the rules, but I don't want to get any more
mess Just about make can't pict your cans on the
side of the house, eighty year old Bitty go back
and watch Matt Locke and the Golden Girls and get
oatmeal for dinner.

Speaker 8 (01:25:11):
Look, if I go to bed at four thirty, I'm
setting up a lawn chair in my yard and sunbathing
in my yard. Like, yeah, well, if you're hot, HOA
should shoot well agreed, Yeah, but Hoa, you should shut
that kind of stuff down, not complain about where trash
cans go.

Speaker 2 (01:25:24):
Thank you, Gordy. So it's it's got a problem apparently
with that too. Huh oh yeah, big big. I got
what I should have asked, Jonathan, is what kind of
money is the HOA enforcement guy making?

Speaker 12 (01:25:34):
Is that good?

Speaker 2 (01:25:35):
Is that a good job? Would you want to be
that guy? Because you're just doing bad news.

Speaker 8 (01:25:39):
I just saw what they already sent me, the invoice
for twenty twenty five, Like, please play this by the
end of the year. I know what I'm paying them,
I don't know what I'm getting in return.

Speaker 2 (01:25:48):
Yeah, what are you getting in return?

Speaker 20 (01:25:50):
You know?

Speaker 2 (01:25:50):
My neighborhood doesn't have we have a splash pad. We
don't even have a pool.

Speaker 8 (01:25:54):

Back to we check trafficking weather together.

Speaker 2 (01:28:42):
You know you know what going on? To DJ voice,
I'm a total fraud. You're absolutely right. Continue on News
and noon, Matt, your Houston Rockets.

Speaker 8 (01:28:50):
We'll debut their twenty four to twenty five city edition
uniforms tonight and the court as well, while celebrating the
thirtieth anniversary season of their back to back championship teams,
which inspired the designs Hometown Heroes Night Tonight over to
at a Center taking on the Indiana.

Speaker 3 (01:29:06):
Pacers bottom of the hour. I will play in the
lineups that I did when I was twenty two years old. Nice,
you didn't even know me when I was twenty two.
What are you doing thirty years ago?

Speaker 8 (01:29:17):
At this point thirty years in ninety four, I was eleven,
So you're a kid, You learning reading, writing, and arithmetics
could idolize me from a distance.

Speaker 21 (01:29:25):
It was going to terrible Saints games. Who is your
unsu sucked? Let me think who your quarterback was in
the Saints thirty years ago. It wasn't Brooks.

Speaker 2 (01:29:36):
That would be after that, right, probably Bobby Abart.

Speaker 10 (01:29:39):
Uh, yeah, it was.

Speaker 2 (01:29:42):
It wasn't Archie, wasn't Wade Wilson.

Speaker 8 (01:29:44):
And they went through a time with Jim Everett. They
went through a time with Billy Joe Tolliver and Billy
Joe Hobert. They had two Billy Joe's. We had a
Billy Joe Tolliver here, and then eventually they had Jeff
Blake and then Aaron Brooks, and that got him to
the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (01:29:58):
I liked Blake, especially as a Bengal Saint, not so much. Yeah,
all right, continue on.

Speaker 7 (01:30:02):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (01:30:03):
Joe Aspata finished fourth in the voting for American League
Manager of the Year announced yesterday. Stephen Vote of the
Guardians won al Manager of the Year. Aj Hinch of
the Tigers finished third in the voting.

Speaker 3 (01:30:15):
I mentioned this on the show yesterday. Get your thought
on this. We're worried about Bregman and we don't have
an update for him. But give me your top four
teams of teams that will piss you off if he
go Bregman goes there.

Speaker 8 (01:30:28):
Uh to me, it's the Dodgers, Yankees, Rangers would be awful.

Speaker 2 (01:30:32):
I stunted the Tigers in at number four.

Speaker 8 (01:30:35):
Yeah, but I kinda I don't know. I kind of
would like on the side, kind of root for them secretly.
I kind of be like you're a secret fan of something. Well,
like what AJ one?

Speaker 2 (01:30:46):
It sucks? It sucked for the Astros. What party was
kind of like good for you? AJ? No oh, I
have such an offending for AJ.

Speaker 3 (01:30:55):
There's a right, but I wouldn't open like I'm not
all of a sudden buying Tiger gear Bregman wanted them.

Speaker 8 (01:31:01):
I wouldn't do that, but I almost wish they were
in the n L right, like if he had Bregman
and Verlander goes back there and pictures for Detroit. It's
a fun story. But like, I don't now I have
to root against you because the Astros play you.

Speaker 2 (01:31:12):
Are we gonna Boo and hits him when he comes
back next year somebody else. It sucks that whole situation.

Speaker 12 (01:31:19):
So what do you do?

Speaker 2 (01:31:20):
You have to do like a long video tribute. You
can't just give him like thirty seconds.

Speaker 3 (01:31:23):
It's not like it's uh, who is the centerfielder for
the Astros that there was with the Guardians gold glove guy?

Speaker 2 (01:31:29):
What's his name? That was traded a couple of years back.

Speaker 3 (01:31:36):
I'm staring at him right now, centerfielder for the Guardians
Astros traded. Oh yeah, fast guy Straw. Yeah, Brian, not
Brian Stratraw as Miles Straw. Brian is a former radio host,
Miles Straw. Yeah, even Miles Straw got a video tribute.
It's gotta be like five times as long as Miles
Straw tribute, right, yes, okay, yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 8 (01:31:57):
A couple more here on the Astros. The Astros added
left hand to pitch your Colton Gordon to their forty
man roster yesterday. This was to avoid the Rule five draft.
You try to protect any guys who'd be eligible that
Colton Gordon, twenty five years old, spent all last season
in Triple A sugar Land, all to talk about aj
blue ball we didn't really talk about Colton Gordon went

(01:32:17):
eight and two with a three ninety four era, struck
out one hundred and twenty four hitters at one hundred
and twenty three ines pitched.

Speaker 2 (01:32:23):
He might be an astro sometimes this show and didn't
get a cup of coffee last year. Though.

Speaker 8 (01:32:28):
I think Blue Ball and Colton Gordon both making their
astro stabuse this year.

Speaker 2 (01:32:32):
And that's why to me, I'd rather give them.

Speaker 3 (01:32:38):
A little bit longer of a leash to get those
guys up than trying to bring Verlander back, right, I.

Speaker 2 (01:32:43):
Mean, what's the point. Don't spend the money. It's just
that would just be bad money because you, first of all,
it's going to take him two months to get ready. Yep,
his pitch cown's going to be down. He's he's sixty
percent of what he used to be. If I want
Justin Verlander on this team, I want one hundred percent
Justin Verlander.

Speaker 8 (01:32:58):
Here's the tough part. Gordon and Blueball maybe get called
up later in the year. Also, later in the year,
you're gonna get Christian Javier back. You think possibly Luis Garcia,
Like who's gonna start the season? We need arms to
start the season. Lance mccullor's paging Lance mccolors, Are you ready?
He's busy with coffee? One more baseball?

Speaker 7 (01:33:20):
No here?

Speaker 8 (01:33:20):
Juan Soto, Alex Bregman, among others declining their qualifying offer.
Red's righty Nick Martinez the only player to agree to
the qualifying offer one year, twenty one million dollars.

Speaker 3 (01:33:31):
Yeah, go ahead, am I am? I poo pooing the
thought of Bregmann trying to come back. I have it
at zero percent chance.

Speaker 8 (01:33:38):
No, I think people I've talked to in the know
have said twenty percent that it's not off the table.

Speaker 3 (01:33:45):
But okay, so your a percentage dude, guy, If you
say twenty percent. First of all, it's it's not either
it's it's not sort of. It's either yes I take
the deal or no, I don't take the deal. So
when you describe to the audience, which you just how
do you describe twenty percent about him coming back?

Speaker 2 (01:34:03):
So there's a bunch of factors here. One is what
is the market? One?

Speaker 8 (01:34:07):
What is they asking for? We know they want the
biggest deal. That's his agent, that's Uscott Boris operates the
biggest deal. Two, what is the market offering. I don't think.
I think there's a world Matt where some people are
maybe scared off a little bit with he had the
shoulder kind of or the elbow kind of cleaned up
this offseason. He's thirty. Like, I think there's some teams
that go, you know what, not interested. I know they're

(01:34:30):
trying to start the whole thing. Like you're seeing the
insiders go, oh, the market is really going to heat
up for pregnant. They're getting that from Boris. I don't
think the market is really gonna heat up for Alex Parker.
I don't think there's gonna be bidding wars all out
there for him. I think teams would like him, but
within reason. And that's where I think. If the most
one team is offering is six years, you know whatever,

(01:34:51):
it is twenty six a year, I think Jim Crane
can go, you know what, we'll do that.

Speaker 2 (01:34:56):
So that's why I say twenty percent.

Speaker 3 (01:34:58):
If anybody knows Jim Rain really really well, just whisper
call Us off air and call Us on a on
an alias.

Speaker 2 (01:35:06):
I think they've moved on everything they've said this offseason.
The moves like the interest in the air. Yeah, that's
my I totally agree with you.

Speaker 8 (01:35:14):
Now again there's the backside where the market dictates that
they're not beaten down the door for him.

Speaker 2 (01:35:20):
I think they could go, you know what, you can
come back.

Speaker 8 (01:35:22):
Uh, I do, Lie, I do have a couple more
baseball all your time hits here uh pirates rookie pitcher
and LSUM Paul Skeens wins National League Rookie of the
Year and he gets the date Livy done.

Speaker 2 (01:35:34):
It's a win win for him. You see the video
of him yesterday two days ago. Reaction. I love that
they interviewed him. They go, how excited? That's pretty cool.

Speaker 3 (01:35:44):
Yeah, I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go after this conference call.
I'm gonna have sex with this girl. I think it's great.

Speaker 2 (01:35:50):
Uh skiings.

Speaker 8 (01:35:51):
By the way, with the time that he got called up,
gets a full year of service time this year, so
they didn't they could have waited longer and called him up.
That's significant because he's ascalate to hit free agency after
twenty twenty nine, he'll only be twenty seven, So so.

Speaker 3 (01:36:05):
Where is he pitching in twenty twenty nine? I guess
more important, wors he pitching in twenty twenty ye Ston
Texas and calling your shot on that You're not the
only one. It's ridiculous. Would love for that to happen
all right. By the way, he had a one ninety
sixty eight, a thirty three percent strikeout right this year,
the two best dominant pitchers in sports have two weird names,
Paul Schiens and Tarrek Skubell.

Speaker 2 (01:36:26):
Let him have him to like a Greg Jones. Yeah,
not many of those anymore.

Speaker 13 (01:36:30):
Now.

Speaker 8 (01:36:31):
The Rays continue to struggle to find a place to
play in Tampa. Tropicana Field we know was severely damaged
by Hurricane Milton. They're gonna play games this year at
Steinbrunner Field. That was already decided, but now they're saying
their new ballpark that they're we're gonna start working on
one point three billion dollars is likely not going to
be ready for the twenty twenty eight season as originally

(01:36:51):
planned because of just planning and all that.

Speaker 2 (01:36:55):
But like that's like, what do you do here? You
don't want to spend millions to fix up Tropicana Field,
like putting lipstick on a pig to get through these
couples seat. But now your big field that was gonna
be ready for twenty twenty eight won't be ready till
twenty twenty nine. Most likely, if.

Speaker 3 (01:37:10):
You're the rais you having only eleven thousand people in
your stadium is going to hamper your ability to spend money.

Speaker 2 (01:37:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:37:19):
Why would you be a race fan and think if
your team is competitive in the first half of the year,
that they're gonna go above and beyond the payroll to
go get somebody when they don't have the money that
an Astros, that a Yankees, that a Dodger team can
get by filling up their failed with forty thousand people
per night.

Speaker 8 (01:37:36):
That's crazy. I mean, like, look, the Vegas one is
going to take years to build. That's still several years
off before Sea Oakland there, all right, I got we
run out of time. I have an NBA nugget into
college football? Which one do you want? What is the
funniest of the three? Is not really funny? Most interesting?
Shador Sanders has reportedly accepted his invite to the East
West Shrine Bowl over the Senior Bowl.

Speaker 2 (01:37:58):
But he wants to chart an aircraft there.

Speaker 8 (01:38:01):
I'm sure he does. Now that is significant. Why because
the Shrine Bowl takes place this year at at and
T Stadium with the Dallas Cowboys, and there have been
some rumblings that Jarah could make a full shift and
hire this offseason Dion Sanders from Colorado to be the
Cowboys head coach, with plans to possibly draft Shador Sanders.

Speaker 2 (01:38:26):
How do you draft your door when you have got
all that money tied up with Dak.

Speaker 8 (01:38:30):
That's the problem. That's why you should have never given
him that extension.

Speaker 2 (01:38:34):
But one they went, didn't they have to do it?
Basically they didn't have to.

Speaker 8 (01:38:38):
I mean, he was gonna be a big cap pit
this year and next year regardless. But I think you
could have just wrote it out there.

Speaker 2 (01:38:45):
You go those the news in noon.

Speaker 3 (01:38:46):
Thank you very much. Chris Gordy Coming up next. Dana
Brown was on Astroline last night. How scintillating Is that
a word?

Speaker 2 (01:38:53):
Cintile ating?

Speaker 7 (01:38:54):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (01:38:54):
How scintillating was the conversation between him and I leave?

Speaker 13 (01:39:00):
Was it?

Speaker 3 (01:39:01):
Todd Colis at host the show, I think how much?

Speaker 9 (01:40:23):
More.

Speaker 4 (01:40:23):
Matt Thomas now on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (01:40:48):
All right, here we go, Gordy.

Speaker 3 (01:40:49):
We're gonna listen to some of the highlights of the
Afterline with Danni Brown last night, which you can hear.

Speaker 2 (01:40:54):
Is that a regular thing now on during the week.

Speaker 8 (01:40:56):
No, they're just doing them kind of randomly throughout the
off season. But a good conversation with Steve Sparts and
Todd kallis taped to data Brown. I believe right after
the press conference to announced dyke in Park is a
dyk in field or dyke in Pi is diking field.
This minute made park. So the thing is dyke In Park.

(01:41:19):
By the way, I'm going to butcher it. I told
this the audience a couple of days ago. We're going
to do a tip jar here at the station. Anytime
somebody on Aaron calls it minute Man is going to
be a dollar.

Speaker 2 (01:41:28):
And the people still call NRG reliant.

Speaker 3 (01:41:31):
And we'll take all the money and will help will
help Clanton buy another Texans jacket.

Speaker 2 (01:41:36):
How long Toyota Center did you call the Summit? Zero
different buildings?

Speaker 3 (01:41:41):
Now Toyota Center became I mean, excuse me, the Summit
became the Compact Center.

Speaker 8 (01:41:45):
Yeah, that's true, Compact. That was a little weird. Did
you call Toyota Center Compact Center?

Speaker 12 (01:41:50):
Nope?

Speaker 8 (01:41:52):
But there are people who still go, Yeah, we're going
to see uh, going to see the Texans over Reliant.

Speaker 2 (01:41:59):
It's NRG.

Speaker 3 (01:42:00):
But that's that's like a sister company, right, it's not
too far rebranding of the name. It's a different name,
you know. And I know this is terrible to say.
I don't like going to Energy under any circumstance. What
I just think it's hard to get in and out.

Speaker 2 (01:42:14):
Nothing going. It's just it's just it's a pain. As
off exit six' ten. It's Kirkbya, it's right there. That's
not the issue.

Speaker 3 (01:42:21):
It's the length of traffic getting in and around the stadium,
both leaving everything. I get out of TODE pretty quick.
I've set outside and it made is okay.

Speaker 2 (01:42:30):
For me too.

Speaker 3 (01:42:31):
I mean I also go there a lot more, and
it may you will sit there a while. You gotta
leave an eighth inning, it was.

Speaker 8 (01:42:36):
Yeah, if it was a walk off nail Bier to
the ninth inning, you're gonna be waiting a while.

Speaker 3 (01:42:40):
All right, let's get us in these cuts. Here's Dana
first on the This feels like and you tell me this, Connor.
These are very generic. You These aren't gonna be giving
away a lot of company secrets. But it's more important
to hear it.

Speaker 2 (01:42:54):
Here's Dana. If Bregman determines the rest of the lineup
this off season, No.

Speaker 22 (01:42:59):
Not really, because you know, once we knew that he
became a free agent, you know, we started to you know,
look at other you know, their basement that may be available,
other fits. I mean, you know, of course we've talked
to Boris, you know, constantly to get Alex done. So
we'd rather for him to be around. But we could
just keep him here. That would be you know, more

(01:43:21):
exciting for us. But you know, we have to go
into this, you know, just as he's a free agent.
We have to look as if he's gonna leave. But
if he comes back, it's like icing on.

Speaker 2 (01:43:32):
The cake, upper down on your emotions after hearing that
cut or staying level.

Speaker 8 (01:43:41):
Yeah, that's that feeling again, that's just the vibes and
everything they've put out this off season.

Speaker 2 (01:43:45):
Is he gone?

Speaker 9 (01:43:47):
You know?

Speaker 2 (01:43:48):
If he comes back.

Speaker 3 (01:43:49):
Like remember when Correa was like, here's the Astros offer
for me, We're like, that's all you offered. My feeling
is is that the offer is going to be more competitive.
It just won't be will not be close to what
he've ultimately signs with. That's just my feeling on that.

Speaker 8 (01:44:04):
Yeah, it was almost like like you have a friend's
stand with you. Yeah, look, if you're leave it or not,
look we'll leave the leave. The bedroom was open for
if you if you need it, it will be open,
you know. But if you're not, no big deal. That's
kind of what he sound like there. Yeah, Bragman's bag.
That's great, you know, but no big loss.

Speaker 2 (01:44:20):
If he's gone. M what's sad? It's a big hole.

Speaker 3 (01:44:27):
At third we're gonna have I mean, Connor, do you
have three hours of Astros good sorry songs to get
get ready for the day that happens. I mean, we're
gonna have every song will be something of negative nature.

Speaker 2 (01:44:37):
If it happens before us to get back. We've got
that pre recorded thing too, Oh we do. That's gonna
take up some more time on the show. Okay, you
won't even have to show up that day. It'll be
me playing stuff.

Speaker 3 (01:44:46):
I feel like, you know what, Gordon, let's you and
I after the show today, just pre record the day
that he leaves a bunch of highlights talking about what
the Astros is.

Speaker 2 (01:44:53):
Gonna do next.

Speaker 3 (01:44:53):
All right, back to data, He says, this team is
still really good if our favorite for third Basement takes off.

Speaker 13 (01:45:00):
I mean, of course, he's done so many good things here.
We'd like to have him back.

Speaker 23 (01:45:03):
You know.

Speaker 22 (01:45:04):
I think we're still a good club, you know, if
he decides to walk. But you know, ultimately, I think
we're a little better club if he's still around. And
so hopefully we can get him done through our multiple
conversations that we're having with Bores.

Speaker 2 (01:45:20):
Y see, I like Dana. I think Danna's done a
pretty good job.

Speaker 3 (01:45:26):
I think Dana's got some tough people he's got to
work for, because everybody's got tough bosses in the world. Thankfully,
Reggie Jackson is gone, so this is not he'll have
one less person you have to listen to.

Speaker 2 (01:45:38):
But this is this, this deal is so.

Speaker 3 (01:45:40):
Important, and I don't think it's an automatic slam dunk,
but there are some Astro fans that feels it should be,
which means you got to get.

Speaker 2 (01:45:49):
The big boss involved.

Speaker 13 (01:45:52):
When c. J.

Speaker 3 (01:45:53):
Stroud ultimately figures out what he wants to do long
term with his salary and you pay him this ungodly
amount of money.

Speaker 2 (01:46:00):
It's the owner that gets in here. Well, no, no,
it's Hannah, not not cal It's got to be more.

Speaker 3 (01:46:08):
I mean I almost feel like Scott Boris is gonna
be like, you know, this is cool. You and I
are Dana talking about what is what's Jim thinking?

Speaker 2 (01:46:14):
Get Jim?

Speaker 3 (01:46:14):
Get Jim on a three way call here, yep. And
and I'm not saying this is disrespected Dan, I'm saying
this is as this is. You have a handful of
players and every one of your rosters in every sport
that you have to ultimately decide. I've got to personally
be a part of this, all right. So that's third base.
What's going on at first base for the Astros next season?

Speaker 22 (01:46:36):
Yeah, we can get a platoon bat. You know, we
really like singing singleton versus right hand and pitching. If
we can get a platoon bat that can hit against lefties,
So it makes it a little bit more difficult. You know,
when he's he's facing the lefty, our lineup is weaker
if he's out there, and it's a left hand pitcher.
So if there's something by by a way of trade

(01:46:57):
that we can do to improve at first base, we
will also do that.

Speaker 13 (01:47:02):
But ultimately we know we need to get a little
bit better. And and there's no secret.

Speaker 22 (01:47:07):
You know, the players know it that play first base,
The coaching staff knows it, we know it in the
front office.

Speaker 13 (01:47:12):
We can get better at first base.

Speaker 2 (01:47:15):
Okay, that's the problem.

Speaker 8 (01:47:18):
Like you, I don't like any if we got to
send Zach Dezenzo or one of these in Shaye whit
come out the third base. That sucks within itself. But
this team cannot open with John Singleton. That's the first
basement an opening day. They just cannot.

Speaker 2 (01:47:35):
So if there's a right handed hit picture that might
be he might be.

Speaker 8 (01:47:38):
I'll give a damn a vise uh paraplegic or left
or right handed. We need somebody who could hit at
first base. So, yes, Data Brown, whether it's trade, free agent,
whatever the hell it is, you need a first baseman.

Speaker 2 (01:47:55):
The hose breathing didn't work out.

Speaker 9 (01:47:57):
I get it.

Speaker 8 (01:47:57):
We're still on the hook to pay him this year, bygones,
be bygones. We got to figure something out. One more,
we were talking about the pitching rotation. How are you
thinking things are looking, Dana.

Speaker 22 (01:48:08):
Yeah, I feel good. You know I mentioned earlier about
the young guys. You know, we have Gusta coming, and
we have Gordon coming. You know, we have blue Ball coming,
So you have some good young starters that you know
could add to our depth. Feel really good about our rotation,
you know, with Fromber and you know, you got Brown
and you have Blanco, you got Arragetty. You know, I

(01:48:30):
feel really good about the rotation. The rotation is pretty strong,
and you know, we can get Garcia back, that would
be a big boost to us. But you know, ultimately,
I think we're in a better position this year. You know,
last year going into spring training, we had a few
guys hurt. Then guys got hurt in spring training, and
so it kind of snowballed on us early and we

(01:48:50):
were very fortunate to you know, turn the corner and
get get on the roll and get back to the postseason.

Speaker 3 (01:49:01):
Okay, I don't like he's mentioned all the young guys
like DoD It feels like they're not gonna do a
lot of spending in free agency.

Speaker 2 (01:49:09):
If anybody's gonna spend, it's gonna be on Bregnant And
that's about it. And I don't know if Kyle Tecker
was brought up in even conversation yesterday.

Speaker 8 (01:49:14):
This already isn't a farm system. It's absolutely loaded with talent.

Speaker 20 (01:49:20):
Now.

Speaker 8 (01:49:20):
I know they won the what the Triple A Championship, right,
and some of the guys took exception out of Yeah,
where's Baseball America?

Speaker 7 (01:49:26):
Now?

Speaker 2 (01:49:27):
Where you got our rankings?

Speaker 8 (01:49:28):
Now that's great, but look, you almost feel like you
you achieved something last year with man Spence Hurrigetty ahead
of schedule and he was awesome. Hadter Brown, thank god,
turned it around and it was awesome. And those guys
are gonna be realied heavily on. Ronald Blanco was awesome.
Another year older, another year with film on him. We'll

(01:49:48):
see if he can repeat it. But like, is this
really where we want to go that we just keep
bringing up guys who are not highly touted prospects through
the system, going, yeah, ayj Blueball, he's next man up, Goosto, Yeah,
you're next man up bike. It feels like it's not
gonna keep hitting like some of these guys. They'll come

(01:50:08):
up and struggle. Then what then what do you do.

Speaker 2 (01:50:12):
I'm not saying go out and sign a cy young candidate.
I'm not saying that, but God, at least out an arm.
Where's Blank's now gonna go? I'm not I'm not throwing
Blake Snail as an astropostle.

Speaker 8 (01:50:22):
The highest bidder. He didn't get his money last off
seas he's still looking for his big money.

Speaker 2 (01:50:28):
Hmmmm.

Speaker 3 (01:50:29):
All right seven one three, two, one two five seven
ninety seven one three two one two five seven nine
zero still coming up between now and at two o'clock.
He made oak at one one twenty, Robert Ori one
thirty though one and only Willie Fritz one fifty believe
it or not, all things about the ninety three ninety
fourteen And speaking of that, I have found the lineups

(01:50:49):
that I did back in nineteen ninety four. This is
and we basically you know where I come to find out.
We ripped off the Chicago Bulls. ROSSI you're rusting out here, Gordy.

Speaker 2 (01:50:58):
We ripped them off.

Speaker 3 (01:50:58):
And I'll explain that next here on Sports Talk seven
ninety seven one three, two, one two five seven nine zero.

Speaker 2 (01:51:05):
Time is a twelve twenty.

Speaker 3 (01:51:08):
Make it twelve thirty, and I want to tell you
about Affordable Tree Service. So happy that many of you
have decided, yes, my trees need some TLC and that's
when you got to come into play with Affordable Tree Service.
Aftree Service dot com is a website. They have been
in business since nineteen ninety nine. Take care of all
of your tree needs. The weather is going to start

(01:51:29):
getting cooler. It's pleasant now, but we're gonna get you
before you know it. The trees are going to be
potentially fighting, you know, wind, cold ice.

Speaker 2 (01:51:36):
You never know.

Speaker 3 (01:51:37):
If your trees aren't ready for that kind of weather
for the upcoming winter, they better get a phone call
into Affordable Tree Service and my man Martin spoon More

(01:52:24):
Tonight at the Rockets game, the Summit logos Rockets Summit
logo is going to be on the floor. Catchhum and
Mustard uniforms the h Town City Connects, which, by the way, I.

Speaker 2 (01:52:36):
Think could look really, really good.

Speaker 3 (01:52:37):
I love anything that's old school. I love everything that
goes back to yesterday, no matter what sport it is.
I love everything about old school from We spent too
much time in the last twenty years trying to create fun, new,
interesting logos when.

Speaker 2 (01:52:50):
The old classics sometimes just just head home a little bit.

Speaker 1 (01:52:54):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (01:52:54):
We're also celebrating the thirty year anniversary of the Rockets
Championship and this is the lineup that I was able
to find on YouTube prior to Game six. And there
obviously the Rockets one in seven Game six of the
one where Elijah One tips the ball away on a
three point try that would have given the Knicks the championship,
but it doesn't really matter. It's in the summit, it's

(01:53:16):
game six. And is there a date on that?

Speaker 2 (01:53:19):
To connor on that?

Speaker 3 (01:53:20):
Is it June twenty twentieth? I think somewhere in that
range Summer ninety nineteenth twentieth, June nineteenth, nineteen ninety four.
It was a Sunday night on NBC. And here's how
Marv Albert sent it to me.

Speaker 23 (01:53:35):
Right here, we'll side for the introduction of the astrotting lineup.

Speaker 2 (01:53:38):
Let's join with Matt Thomas.

Speaker 20 (01:53:42):
Good ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the simm ageteen sixth seal.
Let's speak to night starting lineup first twenty Eastern Conference.

Speaker 10 (01:53:58):
Timpaters New York NDErs.

Speaker 2 (01:54:01):
Call six or fellonal and a very leven.

Speaker 10 (01:54:04):
Derek Harper is six foot to State number three John
Starks forward six for Jimmy and Union number thirty four
Charles Ugley.

Speaker 20 (01:54:18):
The other forward is sixth twn from Pittsburgh number fifty
four Charles Smith.

Speaker 2 (01:54:24):
The century seventhem.

Speaker 20 (01:54:25):
Georgetown number thirty three, Patrick Ewing, coach of an exist.
Riley's assistants are taking harder and Jim Van Gundy the
trainers like Saunders Jim.

Speaker 7 (01:54:35):
Walsh six laster Champions Goods the Rockets.

Speaker 10 (01:55:07):
Six four record.

Speaker 7 (01:55:11):
Back for.

Speaker 20 (01:55:15):
There God is six three from North Carolina, number thirty seven,
Forward six ten, number twenty five, Bots six ten for
Providence number thirty three, Store the Center, seventeen for Incident number.

Speaker 10 (01:55:45):
Tree shows Carol, all.

Speaker 13 (01:55:56):
Right there it is.

Speaker 3 (01:55:57):
That is not the song that we use obviously for
the next two seasons, And I wish I don't have
a great memory of why we we basically bit stole
the Chicago Bulls introductions.

Speaker 2 (01:56:12):
I thought, man, I.

Speaker 3 (01:56:13):
Mean it's a great song. Serious is still a great song.
The Alan Parsons Project is a great way to introduce it.

Speaker 13 (01:56:17):
But I was like, why did we do that?

Speaker 2 (01:56:20):
We couldn't have found something else, But man, that place
is rocking.

Speaker 3 (01:56:25):
That was Game six nineteen ninety four, the NBA Finals.
Back in the day we used to be on Wednesdays
and Fridays and Sundays. They would not deviate from that,
So I knew that Game seven was on a Wednesday,
so Game six had to be on a Sunday.

Speaker 2 (01:56:39):
But yeah, that's that was Boom yesterdyear. I don't think
I sounded too much different than I did that.

Speaker 3 (01:56:46):
It's good Clinton Living right there, but great time, and
I really wish this next generation of Rocket.

Speaker 2 (01:56:53):
Fans can experience that coming up in the not to
distant future. Whether they do with this group, whether they.

Speaker 3 (01:57:01):
Have to get this megastar, who the hell knows. I
you know again, I don't want to be a general manager.
We can just get to play one on radio once
in a while. But it's a good basketball team right now.
Hopefully gets too great.

Speaker 2 (01:57:13):
Uh, But I'll tell you what, I'm more excited about
the squad than I've been in a long period of
time because the last four years have been no playoffs,
and I think playoffs there's an extra buzz and extra
energy in the community when you're actually able to talk
about something that means something that's compared to just a
mundane regular season game. Rockets again against the Pacers.

Speaker 3 (01:57:30):
Will have it for you on seven ninety beginning at
six o'clock with the Launch Pads six thirty Network pregame show,
and then I'll have the call at seven o'clock tonight.

Speaker 2 (01:57:37):
Rockets will have Portland on Friday and then Saturday.

Speaker 3 (01:57:40):
The Friday game is an in season tournament game, and
then back to back, so it should be a winning week.
I mean, Indiana's not great, Portland's not great. So let's
get fat and happy against some of these second tier teams.
Seven to one three two one two five seven ninety
seven one three two one two five seven, and we'll
spend some more time talking about the great ninety three

(01:58:00):
and ninety four season. Robert Ory with us coming up
in just a little bit. Twelve forty two. It is
the Matt Thomas Show with Ross Chris Gordy filling in today.
For him, we appreciate him hanging out with us. Busy
rests the show between now and two o'clock this afternoon.
If you want to jump in, you can do.

Speaker 2 (01:58:15):
So right now.

Speaker 3 (01:58:16):
At seven to one to three two one two five
seven nine zero, Gordon I asked Gordy's impressions of the
Texans Cowboys game. We'll get a little Texan chatter going
up next here in a minute. Twelve forty three. Sports
Talk seven ninety it's.

Speaker 4 (01:58:29):
Matt and he's fact the Matt Thomas Show on seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (01:58:34):
Houston's home for Houston teams.

Speaker 3 (01:58:42):
Back at it on The Matt Thomas Show with Ross
Gordy filling in today. We've got Imaedoca coming up in
about fifteen minutes. I met tease it a thought or
two about what you saw Monday night between the Cowboys
and Texans. It was a get better game, feel better
about yourself. Cowboys sucked. You didn't make it a game
honestly for most of it. And you're about to run

(01:59:02):
through a nice long winning shore coming up with Jacksonville
and with Tennessee this week, and.

Speaker 2 (01:59:06):
Then you got Miami after that.

Speaker 3 (01:59:08):
We could be right where you wanted to be leading
into those two really mega important games against Kansas City
and Baltimore.

Speaker 2 (01:59:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (01:59:14):
Look, the game was probably closer longer than we wanted
it to be, but you pulled away, You beat down
a stinky team, you won convincingly. That's that's all you
can ask for. In my opinion that that's what that
was my gripe earlier in the year when they were
beating the coltspy two and beating the Bears by six,
needing a late fourth quarter stop, being the Cowboys thirty

(01:59:36):
four to ten, that's what we expected from the Texans team.
Take out the trash, and now you got trash these
next two weeks. Tennessee Titans suck as a Jacksonville Jaguars suck.

Speaker 10 (01:59:45):
Suck.

Speaker 8 (01:59:46):
You should be both of them getting to that bye week,
start to get healthy, you know, get Will Anderson Junior
back and get ready for that backstretch run.

Speaker 2 (01:59:55):
Now, I think the Miami game is gonna be tough.

Speaker 8 (01:59:57):
Two was flinging it around Tyreek Hills whest thing talking
with Wex and the guys yesterday. He puts them in
the category of Tennessee and Jacksonville. He thinks that's a win.
He thinks that's that's an easy win. Who said that, Wex?
I don't disagree. And then you're at and then the
two big the biggest two game tests is at Kansas
City and home football Time.

Speaker 2 (02:00:17):
And I mentioned yesterday, just split them, just put those games.

Speaker 8 (02:00:19):
Yeah, Caesar said the done. But also I brought this up.
Kansas City looked human over the weekend against they have Buffalo.

Speaker 2 (02:00:27):
They are the and this is hard to say this.
They were lucky to be pulling out some of those games.
But they're the luckiest one loss team maybe in a
long time. Does that make sense? Yeah, But you know what,
when you win as many games as you do, they're
not all going to be twenty seven to seven easy
PS games.

Speaker 3 (02:00:43):
You're gonna have to luck some games out, But every
time they've gone on the road to play against a
top shelf competitor, they come went with the victory. And
I think part of being an excellent championship super Bowl
contending team is winning when you're not at your very
very best. And so, as much as fun as it
is for us to make fun of the fact that
the Chiefs win had been lesson spectacular, they're still wins yep.

Speaker 8 (02:01:08):
So but again, we're you know, we get this preconceived
notion of teams. The Kansas City Chiefs today of what
they are on November twentieth, may be very different by
December twenty.

Speaker 3 (02:01:19):
First, yeah, Mahomes could be hurt, Kareem Hunt, could be
anybody though.

Speaker 2 (02:01:23):
Yeah, But I'm just.

Speaker 8 (02:01:23):
Saying, like we're just we're looking at that as a
very difficult game. But suddenly, if it's the backup quarterback
or they don't have a a you know, Kareem Hunt,
it changes the landscape of that game. But what's crazy, though, Matt,
is that how this thing's gonna shape up. The Steelers
who played the Browns tomorrow night are very heavily favored.
They're probably gonna win that the Steelers may win that

(02:01:44):
division over the Ravens, and as dangerous and good as
the Ravens are, that may be your opponent that's coming
to NRG Stadium the first round of the playoffs. So
you know, it's almost like you see the Ravens here
at NRG on Christmas Night, and then you might see
him two three weeks later here again.

Speaker 3 (02:02:02):
From a question, you'd be taking on the second worst
wald card, because the worst wald card actually it's not
true to play seven three plays six. You'd be playing
the highest ranked wald card. So very well could be Baltimore.

Speaker 2 (02:02:17):
Movie Baltimore, Yeah, because you would be the four.

Speaker 8 (02:02:19):
The Chargers currently the five, and the Broncos currently are
the worst UH wild card team. So the Broncos would
go to Los Angeles and the Ravens would come here.

Speaker 2 (02:02:31):
Let's go to Biscuit on seven, Ony Biscuit, what do
you got.

Speaker 12 (02:02:33):
Today, Hey, Cougar man Man, I was on the Connor Man.
You brought back memories with that man being with a
Daves man. I h I still got a headache from
all the boosters he threw down at the sports Ball
watching those games.

Speaker 2 (02:02:47):
You got that right? So that was well, how old.
Were you back then?

Speaker 12 (02:02:52):
I was in my thirty thirties. Okay, so you so
you were you were just god, just got married.

Speaker 2 (02:02:58):
Oh that's too bad. I mean can gright relations just.

Speaker 12 (02:03:02):
Started working full time basically, you know so. And I
was telling Connor at the time. Man, you know, I'm
in the Brown Army. I delivered to the to the summer.
That was part of my route. I used to be
underneath there talking to the guys and stuff and all that.
And like me and Mercy eat at the DAILI around
the corner they're on. Ah it not kimm in. What's

(02:03:23):
that street?

Speaker 9 (02:03:23):
The uh?

Speaker 19 (02:03:27):
Ed?

Speaker 12 (02:03:28):
No, I didn't know. Uh the one that goes uh horizontal?
What's the name of Uh what you got? Alabama? That's
what it was, West Alabama? Yeah, yeah, so but yeah man.
Uh also Coopy, man, you see old Sampson Landy got
too fire star coming in. Man.

Speaker 2 (02:03:48):
All we all we do is get the top recruits,
and all we got to do is just pay them
when'd they get here? So cut that check as soon
as you can, yes, sir.

Speaker 12 (02:03:58):
And and and last right, man, I'm staying the course.
If I'm the Rockets. Man, I've just looked at the
power ranking they got the Rockets ranked five and the
power ranking. I'm staying the course, man, you done went
through the bad times. Let these dudes keep yelling together. Man,
stay the course, don't. I wouldn't trade nothing, yeah more
and something else's draft picks because whitmore kind of like

(02:04:21):
duplication of what you got. But no, man, I'm staying
the course.

Speaker 3 (02:04:25):
Thanks to the phone cabot, there's multi reports that people
are asking about the men Thompson and Tarr Easton. Apparently
those both guys are untouchable. It should be a man.
If he could become some sort of perimeter threat, will
be an All star.

Speaker 2 (02:04:42):
He's still so young. Just everything else.

Speaker 3 (02:04:45):
He defends, he rebounds, he plays four different positions.

Speaker 8 (02:04:50):
And everyone in this league wants Atari Easton. Every team
in this league could use a tars.

Speaker 2 (02:04:54):
No question, no question.

Speaker 3 (02:04:56):
Let me get to uh Joe Northwest Houston on the
Map Thomas Show with Ross Gordy Filling and Hi Joe.

Speaker 2 (02:05:03):
Hey, how's it going?

Speaker 9 (02:05:05):
Hey?

Speaker 17 (02:05:05):
I wanted to comment about the Texans. I think too
often they play too conservably and they it's like they're playing,
you know, not to lose, but you know they're not
trying to win.

Speaker 12 (02:05:18):
They're just playing not to lose.

Speaker 2 (02:05:20):
Case in point would be.

Speaker 17 (02:05:22):
The last game we're up in the first half, We're
up fourteen to seven. I think it was like four
and three. I'm a Cowboys forty nine and we punted.
I mean, do you think Dan Campbell would have punted there?

Speaker 12 (02:05:37):
Hell?

Speaker 1 (02:05:37):
No.

Speaker 17 (02:05:38):
So I just think we need to be a little
bit more aggressive and get some confidence in our offense
to get things rolling well well of it.

Speaker 3 (02:05:46):
Also part of it is, Joe is the Cowboys can't
move the football. They just couldn't. I mean, and you
do not want to give a subpar team that early
in the game a half a field, so you don't
want to build any confidence. Look, the defense is how
this team is going things. Get Joe for the phone call.

Speaker 2 (02:06:03):
Fourth and three, second corner, game midfield.

Speaker 3 (02:06:07):
I don't want Dallas to have any sort of momentum
at any point, so I'm not gonna kill it. I mean,
I didn't played per se because I was calling the
rocket scheme. But I think teams, generally speaking, and I
would put the Cowboys and the Texans in this mix too.
I think generally speaking, most teams are fairly aggressive on
fourth down plays. You just don't want to give any

(02:06:27):
momentum to subpart teams, and the easiest thing you can
do is giving them a half fiel where you're only
gonna need to get a good, feel good kicker. You
didn't want to give them some points in that situation, then, didn't.

Speaker 8 (02:06:36):
I think to some degree this team has been less
aggressive in the second half.

Speaker 2 (02:06:42):
Put if that, no doubt about that. But I don't
know if.

Speaker 3 (02:06:45):
They're just but it's general play calling. I don't think
it's just a particular going for it on a fourth down.

Speaker 2 (02:06:49):
Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 3 (02:06:50):
All right, real quick, before we get to the top
of the hour, let's talk to a Jacob north side
of twelve fifty four.

Speaker 2 (02:06:55):
Jacob, go ahead, you go about sixty.

Speaker 11 (02:06:56):
Seconds, right, Yeah, Hey, Gordy, it don't matter, man, he
just just win baby, one point ten twenty, It don't matter.
He and they gonna beat They gonna beat they. I
don't think it'll be Baltimore, but they are gonna beat
them Chiefs. I believe they're gonna beat them.

Speaker 13 (02:07:11):
Cheese.

Speaker 2 (02:07:12):
Hey, Gordy, what what about them Calderaca, Colorado? How about
that Candado, Colorado?

Speaker 9 (02:07:17):
Baby?

Speaker 3 (02:07:17):
Alright, all right, let me let me recap that call,
Gordy about that Colorado, Gordion, Gordy, Godo, how about that Colorado?

Speaker 2 (02:07:25):
They're they're looking pretty good, Isn't it funny?

Speaker 7 (02:07:27):
Though?

Speaker 8 (02:07:27):
Like it he kind of coincided with all the showmanship
of Dion and Shador, and Shador knocked throwing his offensive
line under the bus and talking trust to student sections
and all this as soon as they kind of just
shut up and played football. And I don't want to
make it sound like that, but like in other words,
they just kind of focused on just the football and
said the showmanship actually a good team, breaking news, Deon

(02:07:51):
can actually coach. He's actually a really good coach. All
the other stuff is fun when you're winning. But like
I think what was happening was all the showmanship and
the show and all that was happening, and they were losing,
and everybody's like, Eh, we can't get on board with
you talking all this trash.

Speaker 3 (02:08:04):
And yet looking good. And Dion got startled with the media.
It was like he got disrespected, so we wanted to
take it out on people.

Speaker 8 (02:08:12):
And and I mean maybe internally maybe they're doing everything
the same way. I'm just saying externally, all that all
we've been talking about with Colorado has been the football.
And hey, they're pretty damn good and a good win
over Arizona and Cincinnati and Texas Tech and Utah. Yeah,
this is exactly what they what they wanted. They weren't
good in the Pac twelve a year ago. They're pretty
damn good in the Big twelve.

Speaker 2 (02:08:34):
You missed the Pac twelve.

Speaker 3 (02:08:36):
No, it's so weird seeing UCLA playing Rutgers or Oregon
playing Nebraska.

Speaker 9 (02:08:43):
It just is.

Speaker 8 (02:08:44):
It's yeah that that I won't get used to. Seeing
Penn State at usc All. That's very strange.

Speaker 3 (02:08:50):
It's really, really really But you got SMU and the
a CC and by the way, SMU could represent the
ACC in the championship game.

Speaker 8 (02:08:55):
Can we be real too? And I know i'm SEC bias. Yes,
you are the big much The Big ten sucks. I'm sorry, Matt.
Friday Night on Fox, it is Purdue at Michigan State.
Do you have any interest in watching that game?

Speaker 2 (02:09:08):
Perdue should not be on television. They're one to nine,
Michigan State's four and six. That was a Friday night game.
That's this coming Friday. Oh yeah, I'm a hard path.
That's the only Friday Night game. This week he may
no it.

I spend all the time my broadcast hoping that someday
you as coaches can just say, please give us more reviews,
please give us more challenges. And I know that the
NBA doesn't want a three hour game, but this this
video of Yanna stepping on the bounds that no one saw.
I mean, I know mistakes happened, coach, but damn that hurts.

Speaker 23 (02:11:16):
Yeah, obviously that's a play that you know would changed
the game. And we've got the ball back and then
we had the foul. But you know, we don't like
to look at one mistake is losing a game or
winning a game. But you know, we looked at a
lot of the other things that we didn't do well,
especially in the first half guarding the three point line,
and that's what really made a difference in the game.

Speaker 3 (02:11:36):
Yeah, I don't think I will almost see Gary Trent
ever shoot the ball again, and Brook Lopez too. I'll
say this, and look that the Bucks are having a
disappointing season, but that's still a team that is a
perennial Eastern Conference power. What did your guys learn about
going against that kind of squad and having the type
of game that you had.

Speaker 23 (02:11:52):
Against them, Well, we learned that, you know, we can
guard the lame guys really well and let the others
get away, and that can change the game. And so
when you hold Jannis to twenty points on seventeen shots
and Damiller at eighteen points on eighteen shots.

Speaker 2 (02:12:08):
You're doing your job with the main guys.

Speaker 23 (02:12:10):
But to your point, Lopez and Trent really made the difference,
specifically in the first half, both going four for five
from three, and you know, they went eleven for twenty
three in the first half of three, and then we
held them to two for ten in the second half
and adjusted and defended the way we do all year
from the three point line, but really let them get
get going early, and that's what kind of paved them

(02:12:30):
to lead in the first half.

Speaker 3 (02:12:31):
When you say defend the better the three better, is
that not allowing the extra pass?

Speaker 2 (02:12:36):
Is that a hand in the face is a combination
of both.

Speaker 12 (02:12:40):
Yeah, it was.

Speaker 23 (02:12:41):
They're a very high level one pass and three team.
You know, they draw a lot of attension to the
compo and Lillard and those guys are ready to load up,
and I think we were helping a little bit too
much at times. And then our closeouts and contests weren't
good at all. We were sure closeouts instead of running
these guys off the line. We know they're catching shoot players.
And basically ten of the thirteen that they made were

(02:13:02):
due to our mistakes.

Speaker 2 (02:13:04):
You Mad Dooka with us here on sports Talk, said Hony.

Speaker 3 (02:13:07):
It was fun in the fact that despite things got
kind of serling the first half, Fred took off in
the third quarter.

Speaker 2 (02:13:13):
Jalen did a lot of work in the fourth.

Speaker 3 (02:13:15):
I feel like this year there we have seen a
lot of that where the hot hand not only it's hot,
but it's like, give me the ball.

Speaker 2 (02:13:21):
I'll do this by myself if I have to. There's
been a lot of that so far this year.

Speaker 23 (02:13:26):
Yeah, at times, and obviously the games where everybody's contributing
and we have great balance, those are the games that
we'd like on a regular basis. But when some guys
are struggling, I think guys take the onus on themselves
to make it happen. And you saw Fred do that
the other night in jailing at times out for instend
of their times, and you know, that's what great players do.
They see others struggling and try to make something happen.

Speaker 2 (02:13:48):
So they've done that.

Speaker 23 (02:13:49):
But I'd rather take the Chicago game where everybody's contributing.
We got multiple multiple people in double double figures and
we have a comfortable win.

Speaker 3 (02:13:57):
That was a great night for the game against the Bulls.
And that's one of those situations that you guarded the three.
They took a bunch, didn't make them, and it led
to a lot of transition baskets, a lot of fast
break points.

Speaker 2 (02:14:08):
And then it feels like to me, you man, you
would know this.

Speaker 3 (02:14:13):
A men and Tari are do for at least two
mid court steals and putbacks in one game, and that
has been a nice little asset to Fridge for you
to have a from a defensive perspective, Yeah.

Speaker 23 (02:14:26):
I mean, we start the game with some guys that
are obviously high level defenders. But to bring those two
off the bench and do what they do be as
disruptive as they are as a luxury for sure, and
you know they're gonna play on ball, off ball, pick
up the ball, pressure and like you said, full court.
They get a stealer to a game which turns into
a highlight. So we defended the three much better against

(02:14:47):
them than Milwaukee. Got a ton of stops and got
out and ran against the team that's not a great
transition defensive team and so guarded well. And that's our
formula defensive offense, and we get stops and run. That's
where we're at our best.

Speaker 3 (02:15:00):
You've had Alpi have triple doubles. You've had Fred score
a bunch of points in a short period of time.
Jalen's given you those those types of games as well.
Jalen Jabari gave you one last week. But I would
think probably if you pulled him aside. He's probably not
overly happy with this offensive production this year when you
guys talk about his development and maybe nights with the
balls and dropping. Is it bad shot selection, is it spacing?

(02:15:23):
Is it just ballgrims out? When you guys break that down,
what do you see from him offensively?

Speaker 13 (02:15:30):
A little bit of everything.

Speaker 23 (02:15:31):
Is as far as what you just mentioned, you know,
the open shots here, they're gonna make it when you're not.

Speaker 2 (02:15:35):
You saw that at the end of the Milwaukee game.

Speaker 23 (02:15:37):
We had some open looks that we missed that would
have obviously extended the lead, and they made a few
big shots. And so sometimes it simply comes down to that,
and we keep encouraging him to be aggressive and confident
and take the right shots, which he did and the
Clipper game and obviously carried over to Chicago.

Speaker 2 (02:15:54):
And so that's going to happen or now.

Speaker 23 (02:15:56):
But there are other ways you can impact the game
and not just rely on jump shots going in or
scoring in general. So be disruptive defensively. You know, he's
been really good at getting on the offensive last and
then getting out of transition and spacing to your point,
whether it's a three point or drive for a basket.
Transition is a big thing for him as well as
the rest of our guys, and so that's the main message.

(02:16:17):
Continue to be aggressive and confident, but find a way
to impact it when the shots now falling.

Speaker 3 (02:16:22):
Let's get the tar for a little bit. I mean,
just a glue guy. We were just talking about this
before you join us. Every NBA team wants a guy
like that. Doesn't necessarily look at the scorecard and as
I need as many shots, but I want to be
there when necessary, and the defensive intensity in the offensive rebound.
And we've you and I have talked about this a
lot about the time away frustrating to no end, but

(02:16:43):
even going back to his first year, which was a
very nice rookie campaign, to worry is right now, where
has the jump in his development come from?

Speaker 23 (02:16:51):
I think just as all around comfort offensively offensively, you know,
he does the things that he does naturally, which you
mentioned defensively and offensive rebound. He has a knack for
those things that you can't really teach. But offensively the
shot has become much better, much smoother. I think, you know,
him getting down transition and handling and starting to create
for himself and others is a big area of growth

(02:17:13):
for him as well. So I think it's just all
around the progression of playing consistent minutes. You know that
that was halted last year at a time with the injuries.
But he's a guy that's going to continue to take
leaps every time he plays and obviously impacts the game
in a crazy way. So him being healthy is the
biggest part. But you see the jump shot, and I
think his recognition offensively of running for running and getting

(02:17:36):
into spacing, being a screener, handling a little bit more,
all those things have really grown as well.

Speaker 3 (02:17:41):
Tonight you got the Pacers coach. I'm just looking at
their roster. They're beat up a little bit, aren't they.

Speaker 23 (02:17:47):
Yeah, they've had some tweaks here and there. Guys have
been in down the lineup. But you know, we anticipate
a lot of those guys getting back tonight. And when
they're back, they're a really good team obviously, and you
know headless Snakes Halliburton, but Shock them and and Matherns
playing extremely well for them. So they got a lot
of guys McConnell off the bench, topping off the bench,
and a lot of guys that can contribute. They still

(02:18:08):
want to play at the fast pace that they did
last year. And you know, they got to went deep
in the playoffs last year with that style. And so
although they're struggle a little bit now with guys in
an our lineup, we know when they're full strength, they're
formidable opponent.

Speaker 3 (02:18:20):
Yeah, their pacing was up significantly over the year before.
When you say that for the audience, that's just kind
of just catching a little bit of basketball here and there.

Speaker 2 (02:18:28):
What does Indiana do beyond the obvious of just pushing
that makes them such a high paced basketball team.

Speaker 23 (02:18:35):
Well, a lot of people only push off of makes
and our missus and turnovers. They played with an extremely
fast paced off of makes. They like to endbound quick
and I think Halliburn's one of the best at their
kick ahead passes. He takes one dribble and he finds
guys streaking up or turner down the middle, and so
he's kind of engined behind that. And in the half court,
they really played with a ton of pace, and so
it's not just full court transition, it's them in the

(02:18:57):
half court they slip most majority of their screen. They're
slipping out to cause confusion so a guy can get
ahead of steam or they can find a shooter slipping out.
So they played really fast in the half court as well,
and so that makes them as equally as dangerous, not
just transition wise.

Speaker 3 (02:19:12):
Lastly, we're celebrating the thirty year anniversary of the Rockets
championship tonight. Were were you Were you a big connoisseer
of mid nineties Rockets or NBA in general, or did
you just kind of just pick and choose your games.

Speaker 23 (02:19:25):
I was when Clyde came over.

Speaker 7 (02:19:28):
Oh wait a.

Speaker 2 (02:19:28):
Minute, that's a year after What are you talking about?
That's not nice?

Speaker 23 (02:19:33):
Mid nineties? You know, I was watching Portland obviously watching
client dregs in Portland, and then I always watched them
due to, you know, my Nigerian background with a team
being here, and so watch them quite a bit. When
Clyde came over, watched them a ton and yeah, the
jerseys are sweep if you remember, those old older ones
with the gold trim on them, and so be a

(02:19:53):
good good thing to have back tonight. And I heard
we got a bunch of other guys that wore those
jerseys in attend this tonight, So got to put on
a show.

Speaker 2 (02:20:00):
I'll get a win from that. I know I got
Robert or coming on the show and in the next segment,
so I'm gonna I'm gonna say, get some rest, I'll
see you at the arena tonight, and good luck against
the Pacers.

Speaker 23 (02:20:08):
Tell them hello, that's my old teammates from San Antonio.

Speaker 2 (02:20:11):
Oh, I'm gonna make sure and say you wanted an
interview with me. You can hang on if you want to.
I got other things fair enough. All right, Well we'll
see you tonight. Thanks, coach, appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (02:20:19):
You Mayodoka with us here on the Matt Thomas Show
with Ross and uh one of Emy's former teammates is
up next.

Speaker 2 (02:20:25):
One thirteen is a Time.

Speaker 3 (02:20:27):
Sports Talk seven ninety. It is the Matt Thomas Show.
Bottom of the hour, we'll talk to Willie Fritz. We
got believe it or not today all things about the
two thousand excuse me. The nineteen ninety three ninety four
NBA champions seven one three, two one two five seven
ninety game Day Men's Health has locations popping up all
over the place throughout the Houston area. Why because they
have been successful nationally and now they want to be

Game Day Men'shealth dot Com slash Houston, Game Day, Men'shealth

(02:21:51):
dot Com Slash Houston.

Speaker 4 (02:21:53):
Matt Thomas returns on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 3 (02:22:19):
Joining us in a couple of minutes. Will be with
Robert Lori from the Houston Rockets fame.

Speaker 2 (02:22:26):
This new time slot of ours just I mean, it's
Greg God half an hour or they're going to napple
in before the ninth game.

Speaker 3 (02:22:32):
But I try to eat sometimes because I'm so hungry.
Mill of Day Connor, It's not a good idea. It's
a terrible idea. I'm trying to eat during the show
because you get hiccups and you try to eat it fast.
It's first world problems, First world problems, all right.

Speaker 2 (02:22:49):
Seven one three two one two five seven seven one
three two one two five seven Night.

Speaker 3 (02:22:54):
Robert Ori is gonna join us in just a couple
of minutes here on the show. Texans back on the
practice feel back to a normal week schedule. Uh, they've
got nothing in terms of the standalone network stuff, at
least until the Kansasity Baltimore games.

Speaker 2 (02:23:06):
That's gonna be weird. It's a Saturday, it's a I
gotta look at the schedule. It's like a Christmas this
year is on a. Look, it's on a Wednesday, so
they think they play a Friday game and then a
Wednesday game something crazy like that. But yeah, we got
a bunch of regular start, noon start times because Franklin,
the competition sucks. You think they're gonna put Tennessee versus

(02:23:27):
Houston on national television, Oh hell no. They no interest
in Jacksonville versus Houston. So yeah, it's gonna be some
noontime games after all these primetime games, and then we'll
get back to some stranger times around the holidays. But
it's okay. That's okay. By the way, I was.

Speaker 3 (02:23:41):
Looking at my social media, Beyonce, you know, is gonna
sing at halftime of the game on Christmas, and a
lot of fans were like.

Speaker 2 (02:23:50):
Nah, we're good.

Speaker 3 (02:23:52):
Like, part of me goes, I don't care what happens
at halftime. Really, the Super Bowl halftimes the only halftime
we ever talked about. The part of I think probably
was a little bit of the political block backlash.

Speaker 2 (02:24:05):
But everybody's got it their own ways and means of
communicating things.

Speaker 3 (02:24:08):
So, I mean, Beyonce is very attractive, and I know
some of her songs, but I'm probably gonna have some
lunch or something. I'll have a second round of thanks
of Christmas dinner during a halftime, but that's coming up
to them. So first things first, Tennessee, and we'll get
injury report coming up after the show today and that'll
be probably around three thirty four o'clock or so, and

(02:24:29):
hopefully Nico Collins not taking rest days. Hopefully you get
to some of the members that you know, Kamar Lassiter
back out there and that everybody is healthy, feeling good.
Because what you need to do is you need to
secure that number four spot, win this division, and then
try to figure out a way to you know, pull
off an upset against either Kansas City or Baltimore or
both to try to avoid taking on.

Speaker 2 (02:24:50):
The best walk car. We were talking about this earlier
with Gordy.

Speaker 3 (02:24:53):
The number four seed in the AFC right now looks
to be the Houston Texans because look, casey one, Pittsburgh's
gonna probably be number.

Speaker 2 (02:25:02):
Two, and then you've got Buffalo being three.

Speaker 3 (02:25:08):
You don't want to take on the best wild card
because it very well could be Baltimore. Imagine having to
play Baltimore two times in the final, like three or
four games left of the season, not exactly the way
you want to get yourself ready for a deep post
is run by having to take on Lamar Jackson in
the first round seven one three two, one two five

(02:25:29):
seven ninety seven to one three two, one two five
seven nine zero.

Speaker 2 (02:25:34):
We've also got coming up in a few minutes. Uh,
Willie Frist is going to join us to talk some
Cougar football, and Robert, you better call quick, because I
don't want to be back to back on my guest
here so fast. But we're still waiting to hear from
one number twenty deep five. He's doing some TV i
think for the Los Angeles Lakers, and I'm gonna ask
him about that what he's been doing on that. But
he's been doing that for quite some time. I think
he's always been very well spoken.

Speaker 7 (02:25:55):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (02:25:56):
And look, obviously he went to other cities and did
well and got the name big Shot Bob from all
the different places he played. But there's never been a
nothing ever as good as your first spot, and so
it'll be good to bring up some memories. And the
one thing that's crazy about it is he was a
part of a trade and that didn't never went through,

(02:26:17):
And I've never really asked him about that, what his
emotions were with that, and what it was like to
eventually go somewhere and then have to come back because
a player failed the physical.

Speaker 2 (02:26:30):
So we'll get to some more information about that.

Speaker 3 (02:26:33):
Other headlines of the day the play college football Playoff.
You if you didn't catch Gordy's rant earlier all the
shows on podcast where he you ever noticed when Gordy
comes on, his voice elevates to like umpteen levels when
there's something controversial, Like I try to keep even keeled
no matter what we're talking about. Man, you bring up

(02:26:55):
college football to him and I was like, we got
to turn his volume down a little bit. That's how
crazy he's been when it comes to college football affinity.
But I appreciate his I appreciate his passion for.

Speaker 2 (02:27:06):
It, and frankly, in a community like Houston is so
pro sports driven, to have somebody on our staff like
Gordy that is able to help us out and run
through the college football playoff complexities, I felt like I
know stuff about it more than I did say before
he came on the show. So we've got that to
get to and hopefully the Cougars can ruin some memories

(02:27:27):
here because the Cougar's have still got two games left.
They got Baylor this week and then next week they'll
go at b Yu and b Y.

Speaker 3 (02:27:32):
He's gonna need that game and the worst way to
secure a spot in the Big twelve Championship game.

Speaker 2 (02:27:37):
All right, let's do this. We need to get a
time out in. Willie Fritz is supposed to join us,
and Robert Oriy was supposed to join us in this spot,
but I don't know what the hell's happened.

Speaker 3 (02:27:46):
I think his playing got it okay, but point being
is that he's not been able to join us. I
don't know what we're gonna do. We may have to
push believe it or not away, but I still want
to give away those tickets for the Rockets game that
I have for the Pacers tonight. So let me talk
to behind the scenes and see what's going on with
our guest and flip that and go forward here as
we take the show un till two o'clock today.

Speaker 2 (02:28:04):
It is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. We will
hear from Willi Fritz and hopefully Robert Oriy for the
closest show here on seven ninety.

Speaker 4 (02:28:11):
More Matt Thomas now on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (02:28:21):
How are we gonna pivot.

Speaker 3 (02:28:22):
A little bit, hopefully to get Robert Rory before the
close the show. But right now, let's spend us some
time with our friend, coach Willie Fritz. And it's brought
to you by the Joint Chiropractice, the official chiropractor of
the Houston Cougar's. Cougar's taking on the Baylor Bears this Saturday,
TDCU Stadium at six o'clock. Coach obviously a disappointment with
the performance against Arizona. How long it take the boys

(02:28:44):
to kind of get their feedback on the ground after
playing a late night game on the West Coast and
having to come all the way back to Houston when
you wake up when the sun's rising.

Speaker 16 (02:28:52):
Yeah, we got back about six in the morning on Saturday.
You know, they had the weekend off through the players
when we worked as coaches. You know, it's part of
the unfortunately I sport of sports. You got to bounce
back when you you know, you have a poor outing
and then when you have a good outing, and also
make sure that you move on to the next game
as well. So we're disappointed didn't play as well as

(02:29:14):
more capable of.

Speaker 9 (02:29:15):
And we need to play really, really good. This weekend
gets a very good.

Speaker 3 (02:29:21):
Bail Overly simplistic, but man, the turnover margins is gonna
cut you every single time, isn't it.

Speaker 9 (02:29:28):
That is you know, I know I've said it on
your show many times.

Speaker 16 (02:29:30):
We're just we're a point where we're gonna play real good,
you know, in all all three faces.

Speaker 9 (02:29:36):
And part of that's not turning the ball over and
also getting some takeaways. And you know we do that
and that happens.

Speaker 16 (02:29:44):
You know, we're at right now, it's gonna make a
difficult games. So we got to do much better job
hang out and football and create some takeaways as well.

Speaker 3 (02:29:54):
You know the numbers you got bounce passing, you got
bounce rushing, you got close to it, you know. And
then the red zone multiple times. And look, you can't
necessarily reinvent the wheel this late in the season, but
your general thought about red zone execution is necessarily play
calls because you guys go through this all the time.
But sometimes you just got to be able to take
the play that called it and finish things off because

(02:30:15):
you work so hard to get to the inside the
twenty yard line.

Speaker 2 (02:30:17):
You'd like to get something out of it.

Speaker 16 (02:30:20):
No, you're exactly right, you know, a big deal. We
talked about four point plays all the time, touchdowns and
get a field goals and you know when you get
down in that area, especially when you're on the one
yard line and you got you got your point may
touchdowns and you know it's just as uh, you know,
we try to try best, you know, put them in
good positions to you know, make plays and you know

(02:30:43):
you got to execute the play and wherever the play
call is, you know sometimes it might not be the
perfect play call, but you gotta got to execute the
best of your ability and you know that gives you
a chance.

Speaker 9 (02:30:53):
You know, to score a touchdown.

Speaker 16 (02:30:55):
But you know we've had had our difficulties. Uh, it
sees in the red zone gotta be a lot better
than that area Saturday.

Speaker 2 (02:31:02):
You have put games to bed everything when good times
and in bad do you sometimes when you get the
clicker gone, do you look at the body language of
the kids do you like to see them go, oh, man,
I should have done this, or hey, I need to
pay more attention to that, and and do you sometimes
get the non verbal cues from mistakes that are made
and kind of see what the characters of your squad

(02:31:24):
based off nights where you have to show the tape
of a twenty seven or three loss.

Speaker 9 (02:31:28):
Well, you know part of it. You know, we watch
every single play on Monday morning after a Saturday game,
and you know, we look at it all.

Speaker 16 (02:31:39):
I tell the guys be very critical of yourself. Now,
we're very critical of ourselves as coaches. You got to
be very critical of yourself as a player. And you
know there's a difference in you know, maybe now you
had a there Joe beat your Jim, you know, and
on the field, but not if we tim didn't execute properly.

Speaker 9 (02:32:02):
You know, that's that's an issue. We just got to
make sure that we're we're doing a super job of that.
And and uh, you know, we just uh, you know,
it's it's everybody.

Speaker 16 (02:32:12):
It's not just uh, you know, the assistant coaches is
the head coach, you knows, and everybody's connected with the program.
We just you know this, we got to do a
great job of playing well in all three phases. You know,
that's you know, the games we've won this year, We've
done a good job with turnover, takeaway margin, We've done
a good job running the ball, playing, defense, tackling, So

(02:32:35):
all three phases got to play well.

Speaker 9 (02:32:37):
For us to be successful.

Speaker 16 (02:32:38):
And you know, I told him that at the beginning
of the season, there's been some years where maybe we
could have her you know, give our c game and
still win.

Speaker 9 (02:32:46):
You know, it's we just got we got to play well.

Speaker 16 (02:32:48):
This is a you know, big blowy football and the
big twelve, and we got to play extremely well.

Speaker 9 (02:32:53):
And uh, kids know that, and the coaches do also.

Speaker 3 (02:32:56):
Baanlers have a bounce back season up to six and four.
They went to West virgin and scored forty nine points.
I'm going to assume you do not want to get
into an offensive shootout with them, correct, No.

Speaker 9 (02:33:07):
We certainly delt.

Speaker 16 (02:33:08):
They've really played well the last four weeks, you know,
and been very opportunistic defense, and got a really good
kicking game. Might have the you know, the best power returner,
kick returner, kicker and hunter you know, and in the country.

Speaker 9 (02:33:28):
They really did a good job. They have four really.

Speaker 16 (02:33:30):
Good players in those areas. So that's another area that
we got played much better. And then what we did
on last Friday.

Speaker 3 (02:33:40):
Night, lastly, coach, the guys are gonna be wearing the
Houston Blue uniforms and uh, look at you and I
have talked about this at nauseum all over the course
of the year. It used to not care about what
you wore, just putting the uniform on and playing. But
today's kids are a little bit different. But I'll say
this for a large section of people that were fans
of a former professional team in this town, the fact

(02:34:01):
that Houston Blue uniforms were so good last year and
looked so clean, and uh, a tremendous energy for a
set of some blue uniforms will be on the field
on Saturday night.

Speaker 16 (02:34:11):
Yeah, I think, you know, there's a long tradition with
Houston and that color, and I think it's uh, you know,
I know a lot of people are excited about it,
and hopefully everybody comes out and where's their blue on
Saturday six oh five kickoff, And I think we'll have
a great atmosphere and we're looking forward to it.

Speaker 3 (02:34:31):
Do you uh spend a little extra time with the seniors.
Do you have that pregame speech already kind of locked
in Lon because you've had a few of these over
your career.

Speaker 16 (02:34:40):
Yeah, you know, we we Uh, it's great to honor
the years we'll we'll have their parents out there as
well in pre game and and uh, you know, obviously
recruit very many of these guys and they've really been
a lot of fun to work with and they've been,
you know, just uh played their tails all for the
universe Houston. We appreciate that. On another thing.

Speaker 3 (02:35:05):
On Saturday night, Coach, thanks for the visitors. Always do
this one more time next week. Getting ready for the
trip to b Why you good luck this Saturday against
the Bears.

Speaker 9 (02:35:13):
Thank you, appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (02:35:15):
All right, you got it. Thank you.

Speaker 3 (02:35:16):
Willie Fritz joining us here on the Matt Thomas Show
with Ross and his interviews are brought to you by
our friends at the Joint Chiropractor, the official chiropractor of
University of Houston Athletics. My rocket contacts are trying to
get a hold of Robert and there may be some
flight issues, whatever the case may be, but we are
unsuccessful at this point, which disappointing because I like talking

(02:35:37):
Robert Dory again. He's got a nice litt television career
out in Los Angeles doing his thing there, and it's
always good to bring up the memories.

Speaker 2 (02:35:46):
Memories of a team that choke City was in play.

Speaker 3 (02:35:54):
It's going to happen when you blow twenty point fourth
quarter leading the playoff game, two straight games where you
play the Suns, and then you came back and became
it clutch city. It's crazy as as many people that
weren't around over babies or just kids that't didn't realize
the value of it still use the clutch city mantra.
Because the Rockets have still used it makes a lot

(02:36:14):
of sense. It's crazy one championship team has created a
vibe for a for an organization for as long as
it has because Simpile still call it clutch City all
the time, and I kind of like it because frankly,
this city, with all its sports teams have had moments
of not being clutch. Orders versus the Bills Astros losing

(02:36:42):
eighty six and ninety eight in dramatic fashion, Fi Sima Jam,
I mean, there've been a lot of stuff in our life.

Speaker 2 (02:36:49):
It's like, oh, that's been far from clutch.

Speaker 3 (02:36:52):
How about the Astros being up three to two to
the Nationals in the World Series with two games at
home when you needed to win one. I don't what
am I doing depressing myself?

Speaker 2 (02:37:01):
I don't want to do that.

Speaker 3 (02:37:04):
That's why that year still to me carries so much
cache and so much importance because of the fact that
they were able to overcome two terrible home losses then
going on the road down two. Charles Barkley still very
much into private his NBA career, bad mouthing, we're in

(02:37:28):
the butt kicking business and business is good. I remember
being that locker room going what the hell? Because remember
that team was so good in one I think fifty
seven or fifty eight games.

Speaker 2 (02:37:39):
I mean it was. It was not a fluky team.

Speaker 3 (02:37:40):
The second year championship team is actually flukier because of
the fact that they were a six seed. Six seeds
aren't supposed to win conference championship. Sixteeds aren't supposed to
win NBA titles. Rocket team in that first year in
ninety three ninety four, that was the second best rocker.

Speaker 2 (02:37:53):
In the West.

Speaker 3 (02:37:57):
But the only problem we have now is there's been
a generation of fans that go to the games. Now
there's a generation of Rocket fans that listen in the
game on the television and what and on radio and
whatnot that just don't are starting to lose that, and
I think it's one of the things that sports organizations
have to be very careful of. Part of the emergence
of what Kelvin Samson has done at the University Houston is.

Speaker 2 (02:38:22):
While he appreciates Fi Sama Jama, he doesn't want to
talk about Phi Sama jam anymore because.

Speaker 3 (02:38:29):
That was you know, early to mid eighties, and today's
eighteen nineteen year old kid who's trying to think of
the University Houston is not thinking about Fi Sama Jama.
He's thinking about, first of all, frankly, how much nil
money am getting?

Speaker 2 (02:38:46):
Number two? How great am I facilities? Number three?

Speaker 3 (02:38:49):
Am I going to be able to be on national
television every single night? And number four is education? Now
that may be kind of flawed in terms of priorities,
but that's what today's kids are all about.

Speaker 2 (02:39:00):
And I hope this generation of.

Speaker 3 (02:39:02):
Fans tonight the go to the game, and by the way,
tickets are still available for the game against the Pacers.
We'll sit back and relax and enjoy the nostalgia of
thirty years ago, but more importantly, just enjoy what we've
got now, and that is the most relevant basketball we've
had in quite some time. Good veteran mix Van Vliet

(02:39:24):
and Brooks Alpi's taking his game up a notch. A men,
Thompson's only getting better every time he steps on the floor.
Tari Easan's constant aggressiveness is passionate.

Speaker 2 (02:39:37):
It makes you just find more thrills of the game.

Speaker 3 (02:39:41):
And while all the things I just said makes a
lot of sense and is interesting and fun, it's going
to ultimately come down to what you do for me
in the postseason, and the first step is for the
Rockets to get to the postseason. Now on Pace guy,
things are going well, but things are gonna get tougher
for sure.

Speaker 5 (02:39:58):
This week.

Speaker 3 (02:39:58):
Not so much Indiana beat up, but they play really well.
They score a lot of points, but they're been hurt.
And Tyre's Haliburton is still there, so he's still going
to cause a pain. And then Portland's coming in the
next couple nights and those should be a little bit easier.
But back to backs are always gonna be tricky sometimes.

(02:40:19):
But you still got to play the Lakers a bunch,
You still got to play Dallas a few times. You
still got to take on the Minnesota's of the world.
While I may have the excitement because I'm calling the
games and on the radio, announcer. I know it's gonna
take a while for those of you to get to
get on board with that, and I understand it. I'm

(02:40:39):
not foolish to believe that a ten and five start
all of a sudden is gonna get the city Houston
reped up for it. But maybe we can talk more
of this so when they get to forty wins, maybe
or get to the midway spot of the season, all
Star break, because there are still a lot of people
that have not gone to games in a long time
that don't realize how much fun a postseason playoff game

(02:41:01):
can be. In the NBA, you can definitely feel a
different vibe in the arena where every basket is talked about,
every pass, every defensive play, and it's kind of cool
that we would be able to ultimately have a situation
where we are talking about a basketball game in this
town for the first time in five years that actually

(02:41:21):
is going to mean something.

Speaker 2 (02:41:22):
And I think that's what the value of a postseas
can do.

Speaker 3 (02:41:24):
No matter how far they go, just getting back to
the postseason, not talking we're just playing, but actually getting
to the playoffs would be huge. Seven one three, two,
one two five seven ninety seven to one three two
one two five seven nine zero. If you want to
join us, that's how you play Believe It or Not
up next, and we'll have that for you coming up
in just a couple of minutes.

Speaker 2 (02:41:43):
We are playing.

Speaker 3 (02:41:44):
The first person that winnes today is going to get
a pair of tickets to see the Houston Rockets take
on the Indiana Pacers, as long as you can go tonight.
If you can't go tonight, you can certainly play for
Cougars Versus Bears tickets on Sunday seven one three two
one two five seven ninety at seven one three two
one two five seven. Honey, I want to tell you
about Sethie's Fine Jewelry. They're on San Felipe, Uh, near

(02:42:09):

the City Edition and the court Oh, the Summit Courts
can be next.

Speaker 24 (02:44:25):
Like you've got the Summit on the floor where the
Rockets are playing for the first time since like what
nineteen ninety six.

Speaker 3 (02:44:31):
Yeah, after you left us to go live in Utah
and I left in two thousand and four, but thank
you you.

Speaker 24 (02:44:36):
Left us discount. Matt Thomas is the PA announcer. Now
you're all.

Speaker 2 (02:44:41):
Choked up about it. It's wrong with you. He was awful, Mario. No,
he's not. He's an Oklahoma city. They love him there.
He was exactly That's where he belongs Oklahoma. City. You've
never been in Oklahoma City? Game for you?

Speaker 9 (02:44:55):
For what?

Speaker 2 (02:44:56):
It's not bad at all. I drove through there on
my way the city. You've never stayed there? You would
I stay there on purpose. It's a nice place. You
would never stay there if you didn't have to work
there a couple of times. But I mean when I
got when I land in Okahoma City and go, oh
my god, I'm in hell.

Speaker 24 (02:45:09):
No one has ever said I said about Philadelphia, Well, yeah,
that's because there are meth zombies walking around outside the arena.
No no one has ever said with a straight face,
oh hoo, Glaoma City have to nice police, great steakhouse.
So what's it called, Mickey mantles. I thought you're gonna
say out back or something like that. They have better
downtown than we do. Oklahoma City does not have a

(02:45:31):
better downtown than Houston. Every city's got a better downtown.

Speaker 2 (02:45:35):
Did you hear real quick? And I don't mean we
have one minute here?

Speaker 3 (02:45:38):
Do you hear about one of our favorite eating places
is going on a business ours are like just in
general kim Son's out.

Speaker 24 (02:45:45):
Oh yeah, the one downtown was that's been gone though,
No it's still there. Well, the building's there, but I
thought it was been closed down for a while. I
ate there within the last year. Yeah, within the last year.
What's happened in the last year.

Speaker 2 (02:45:58):
God, downtown sucks. It sucks.

Speaker 24 (02:46:01):
You know why it sucks because everything's going on underneath
the streets. The tunnels are actually awesome. And the reason
I think, in part they were built is because it's
ridiculously hot nine months out of the year.

Speaker 3 (02:46:11):
Yeah, but it's hot in Phoenix and phoenixes that go downtown,
but it's a dry heat. Dallas Downtown's kind of two.

Speaker 12 (02:46:18):
We just are.

Speaker 9 (02:46:19):
We have.

Speaker 24 (02:46:19):
That's because if you're a president, you don't make it
out Milwaukee's downtown significantly. But I heard what you just said.

Speaker 2 (02:46:24):
I was about to say, I went right over your head.
I heard every biting of it. All right, get ready
for your show. Okay, five minutes left to go on
