Speaker 1 (00:01):
Is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
What a lovely Saturday.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
Oh, Sports Harvey, how the hell are you walking from
the Matt Thomas showed Ross doing great Matt on the KBM,
the best music ever if you're on Sports Talk seven night.
Speaker 4 (00:32):
Now.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Oh, let's just be blunt. There's like nine of you
out there today. It took me forty one minutes. Oh
that's a long time to get from the back of
Kingwood to the palatial twelve thirty three West Loops South,
which is that's like a Sunday to me. Yeah, it
took me like four minutes to get in. Yeah, someday.
(00:53):
We were looking at high rise apartments in the Upper
Kirby area. Oh really, and Hannah aneurysm is as we
saw the first round of prices, so don't forget the
HOA fees too. Oh I forgot about that, and sharing
of walls, which we've not done in twenty five years,
So why what's what's the quickly in houses? So, I mean,
what's the big deal? You just so fine? All right? Well,
(01:13):
I mean, uh, you've been doing my whole life and
rate your current apartment in terms of uh too much,
too loud? There are some neighbors that blast the music,
usually on the weekends like Sunday mid mornings. But other
than that, that's too early for you. That's fine, You're
not up until eleven fifty nine, until those twelve noon kickoffs.
Other than that, it's been quite pleasant. All right, Well,
good for you, And again I would like to be
(01:34):
in that world someday, someday, someday. All right. It is
a sports talk seven ninety. It is the Matt Thomas
Show with Raws seven one three two one two five,
seven ninety. If you'd like to join the radio program today,
are you okay? So make sure it's working. Why is
there a leaf blower in here? That's seven one three
(01:58):
two one two five seven ninety. Uh. Normally we don't
spend a lot of time talking about things that happened
two days ago because we're you know, we'd like to
be a bustling in bustling. But so much of the
Houston sports scene was yesterday or on Saturday. First of all,
the Houston Texan Secure Playoffs spot I never ross we have.
(02:19):
I'm putting up them, laying the law down in the show.
We are never going to talk about a team that
goes oh and two or oh and three that doesn't
make the playoffs. That number comes out every single year,
and the Texan said, shut up, mass up. Yes they did.
They wouldn't incredb. I mean, I didn't think they were
going to make the playoffs at ozh and three. I
didn't think they were going to make it at three
and five. And then they ripped off eight straight wins. Yeah,
(02:40):
and are going to be at least a wild card team.
And if Jacksonville lose, can't forget what I said. Jacksonville
lives in Tennessee. I mean I would think not right,
probably not. Cam Wore has been playing a little bit
better last couple of games. Yeah, But even so, I mean,
if you if you're Jacksonville and you have where's that game?
(03:01):
Sorry that I shouldn't have put you on the spot.
That's my fault. No, it's it's all of our fault.
It's all of our faults. Alright, look at me, look
at appropiate. No too, it's in Jacksonville. Okay, So it's
eleven and a half. So let's put in perspective. If
the Jacksonville Jaguars lose at home to Tennessee with a
chance to clinch the AFC South. Yeah, say it will
(03:22):
be a one and done playoff team. They may still
be one and done, but that's notither here North there.
We got to move forward on that. So the Texans
probably are going to be a wild card team right
now as it stands, they're the number five wald card, which,
by the way, I had to tell the truth a
(03:42):
few weeks ago. And you may have been gone on
this because I think you've not worked much of the
fourth quarter. I'll be off the next two days. This
is my last day of the year. Bye, you don't
know you'll be back? Yeah? What's I going with this? Oh?
I said the Textans could be a five. Ste was like,
nab me, could you don't know you a NC sal math? YEA, yeah,
I know my math. There was a chance I could
(04:03):
slot up to five. So the thought is you might
have an opportunity to see the Texans play either Pittsburgh
or Baltimore. That would be Pittsburgh lost yesterday to Cleveland, Yes,
which gives you a lot of hope that if next week,
if Pittsburgh does beat Baltimore, that you could go to
(04:26):
Pittsburgh the following week and beat up on our old me.
Could you imagine daneil Hunter and Will Anderson going against
fifty seven year old Aaron Rodgers. This sounds amazing. I mean,
I've never seen a double digit road favor in the playoffs,
but I wouldn't be surprised if there is one. I
don't think it'll be that far, but you get my drift. Now,
the Baltimore one is a little sketchier because of a
variety of things. One, Lamar and Jackson will obviously have
(04:48):
played well enough to get the Ravens in. Number two,
Baltimore has had a lot of playoff games in the
past against the Texans, and number three, the Texans have
always gone to Baltimo more and not done one in
the playoffs, So a lot of bad juju on their side.
So I would say, if you are a Houston Texans fan,
(05:08):
you are rooting hard for the Pittsburgh Steelers to win
that game next Sunday night. Yes, Saturday night, No, it's
Sunday night. It's it's the Sunday night game. I mean,
Baltimore Pittsburgh for the division. So how about this, NBC's
slapping that up so Week eighteen, now, ab C, ESPN
pay a lot of money for games. Yes, do you
(05:31):
have NBC pay a lot of money, And then you
also have CBS and and Fox are like, you know, hey,
I'm over here. Remember we're the ones that carry your
Saturday A little Prime video in there, Netflix, Netflix, whatever,
a little NFL network, which we will get to today
on the show. So there's three essentially sexy matchups between
next week, and that's about it. I mean, there will
(05:52):
be a little bit of seating placement here and there.
ESPN gets the two of the three sexy matchups, NBC
gets the other one, and me weill. Fox and CBS
are like, oh, we'll let you have as much of
the Jets and Bills as you want. We'll let you
have as much of the Commander's Eagles game if you'd like. Oh,
by the way, oh Fox, you want Chargers Broncos, you
can have it. You know what I'm saying. Chiefs Raiders
(06:13):
on CBS. Yeah, it's the total thirty six and a
half in that game. Just go home, everybody, Chiefs Raiders.
Who wants I don't even think Kansas City wants to
see that game. Thirty six and a half in an
NFL game is embarrassing. Well, wasn't the Texans Chargers thirty
nine and a half or something else was and it
barely beat that number. Speaking of that, I would like
(06:34):
to thank the fine University of Texas for helping the
Texans win a playoff spot. Explain Cameron Dicker, Yes, the
kicker who, by the way, i'd heard at nauseum about
he's never missed a field goal kick inside forty yards,
one of the greatest kickers of all time. Anner you baby,
he missed, Yes he did. And then oh, he doesn't
miss extra points. He's mister automatic. And he missed those
(06:56):
four points decided in some regard the they were the difference.
They were the difference. Sometimes you got to be lucky
you Sometimes you gotta be good, which the Texans clearly are.
Sometimes you got to be lucky, and the Texans were
extraordinarily lucky with those two. I don't want to care
about the illegal contact call. In the end, it felt
(07:17):
like at least some Texans twitter that every call was
going against the Texans or in the course of the game.
I can't get in too much of the minutia on that.
I just know the Oiner is acting like somebody shot
his dog. Yeah, the illegal contact call. And if you
trust what the officials say, which those officials that are
hired by the networks tend to always lean towards the officials.
They all said it was a good call. So again,
(07:40):
I don't think one call makes a difference. It just
happened to be that was a big one because you
had Sack Stroud gave the Chargers one last hope and
then all of a sudden, wam bam, thank you man,
it's legal contact. CJ. Stron can take some knees and
the Chargers lose the game. I'm going to lunch with
my buddy Ed, who if those over the years, is
a die hard Charger fan. If you think it's tough
(08:03):
being a Texans fan, just be a Charger fan for
your life, pretty snake. Now they have leaves gone to
Super Bowl? Yeah, but but but is the just one? Uh?
I think I had been to two. I'm not a sad,
but they've lost both of them. One was a blow out.
One they got destroyed, yeah, commander Yeah, I mean yeah,
(08:23):
or they get destroyed by the Cowboys, right or something.
Speaker 5 (08:26):
I don't remember.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
Well, look at it. We have a huge San Diego
or slash cares. But if there's a way to lose
a game, the San Diego slash Los Angeles Chargers can
lose the nine Ers. Yeah, they've been to one. It
was a blog, correct, it's our because Big Philly never
took him there to a Super Bowl, did he No,
they went to an AFC championship game which he played
(08:48):
on a torn a cl admirably, but they lost. By
the way. Did you so how much to think Colt's game?
You see yesterday? Philip Rivers? Okay, it'd be like Nolan
Ryan in his prime would throw fastballs one hundred and
one miles an hour, right, and then maybe no One
towards the end was throwing ephis pitches. Yes, that's what
Philip Rivers is doing. He's throwing ephis pitches. He's throwing
(09:10):
sidewinder wobblers. They have no velocity. You and I have
more zip on it, and that's why they're so easy
to intercept. They somehow find the target. I mean a
high percentage, though more higher percentage than I would think. Yeah,
all right, ten twelve is our time. Here's the show today.
We've got to tell the truth at eleven thirty this morning.
(09:30):
Looking forward to that we have the news at noon.
Oh yeah, that's got a news forty seven. Wonderful timing
on that. At twelve thirty, we'll be announcing our d
of the Year candidates. Oh really, we have four, as
we normally do every year, three year sports related one
or not. So I'll be ready for that. Chris Gordy's
gonna call it ten fifty because he wants to tell
(09:55):
the whole worlds you didn't care about the game at
as you didn't want to want watch that LSU second
half against Houston. Look, if they wanted to win the game, yeah,
they're trying to win. Yeah, but the LSU, the SEC
narrative if they don't win is that they weren't carried trying.
And so he decided he wanted to go to that
and he got squashed by all of America, including Cougar fans.
I thought SEC just means more. Apparently not here and uh,
(10:17):
how about uh Lane Kiff and not even standing for
the whole game, like I gotta catch flight. That makes sense,
So we'll get to this to be uh. And then
the best of Believer or not today is coming up
at one fifty times. That's the best of the best
questions that we've used over the course of the year. Wonderful. Now,
if you'd like to be a part of the show
seven one three two one two five seven ninety seven
one three two one two five seven nine zero, it
(10:40):
is The Matt Thomas Show with Ross seven one three
two one two five seven ninety ten twenty Sports Talk
seven ninety. Remember we love you, and we especially love
you if you've taken time to spend with us today, because,
as I said, forty one minutes for me, it's like
(11:04):
uncontested from my house to hear really, Yeah, it's thirty
like a line, it's thirty eight miles, so I can
only go so fat. I mean, I'll have a helicopter.
Even if I did, I wouldn't be in. It's like
the Rockets defense against the Kings. Okay, let's go talking
about the kern in now. Okay, talking about how they
disposed of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Yeah, and the Lakers and
(11:26):
the Lakers. Uh you and I'm not really talked about
No we watch at all because we haven't been on
since Wednesday? Was I telling you? Who was I telling
to you about this? We have done a show a while,
Uh you and I Tim Langler was like, I've never
seen a more unprofessional performance, but from the Los Angeles
(11:46):
Lakers on Christmas Day. He's like, they had No, they
don't they don't have they like each other, they don't
look like they have any interest in playing any defense.
Did you hear jj Reddick after the game?
Speaker 6 (11:55):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Yeah, He's like, we're gonna have a hard conversation. He said,
I'm not doing fifty three more games. Yeah, it's like
he's already begging out of the job. But they won yesterday,
so they're feeling better.
Speaker 6 (12:04):
Well.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
Apparently there is a lot of talk about Luca and
Lebron not getting along too. Luca Luca haven't an attitude
problem before any the chance is there any chance that
Nico Harrison, the recently fired general manager of the Dallas Mavericks,
could have a little bit of a I told you, soul,
(12:26):
I get where you're going. We'll be proven right by
the end of when it's all said and none. So
you can still have that, and you might ultimately have that.
You just have to open it up to other teams.
You have to say, all right, Luca and we're just
not getting along. You got to open the world and
as I was talking to somebody about this over the weekend.
(12:48):
If you didn't want the world to know that Luka
doncic what you're about to trade him, then just lie
to everybody. Rumors have it that the Mavericks talk with
the Knicks, Rumors have it that Mavericks talk with the
Bucks remembers having that Luca talked with the Mavericks talk
with the Magic. Just deny it, or even if you
let it, you can get it, let it get out,
(13:09):
and then deny it and then you can try to
try to drum up some kind of market. But you
just you just narrow what you thought were an opportunity
to go get really good value for one of the
great franchise s type players by dealing it with one team.
I mean, Max Christy's okay. Anthony Davis is really good
when he plays, but he's always I mean he's literally
always hurt. You didn't get enough. His nickname is street clothes. Yeah,
(13:33):
for a reason he's out again. I mean, you just
can't live by being that stubborn of a general manager
because you're afraid it's gonna get out when that fired. Lie.
That's a big part of the reason why he's gone, Yeah, okay,
So if they're not getting along, that isn't surprise because
(13:55):
they come across two massive egomaniacs, I mean, and Lebron's
second greatest player of all time. You to kind of
have an ego at that point. Yeah, he's passed his prime.
And then Madoncic is a bigger e domaniac, and then
I mean JJ Reddick calling them out completely like reaming them. Yeah,
that seems like a toxic situation over there. Yet they
won their their twenty games, but of course, yeah, are
(14:18):
they going to be able to hold the glue together
and then try to make a playoff run? I don't
think so. I would I would put them fourth place
among the top four in the in the West. I
would love to play them. You know what problem is,
I should say top five. I was going to say
there's a five team tier in the way I would
say fifth. I would put them fifth. Personally. Yeah, all right,
so we will not really do a lot of standings
watching on this show until the counter your turn. You're
(14:38):
such a liary day, so you're checking, you know right now,
how many games back the Rockets are the team there
in front of I might but it doesn't mean I'm
gonna bring it up. Okay, okay, all right, so let's go.
Let's go back to Saturday. We've got a lostuff to
get to on Saturday first and foremost, Go kooks, Yeah,
go kooks, and we'll get to Gordy come up in
twenty five minutes because he's gonna have to just he's
(15:00):
going to backpedal and he's going to do all the
things that we know that Gordy will do. Yes, Uh,
number it just means more, that's right. Somebody's a wise
man once told me the SEC Bowl season number two. Uh,
the Texans diversity and offense was amazing in the first quarter,
and then they went away from it. They like, yeah,
(15:20):
we we we put those we put those plays in
the first quarter, and we'll not use them again. I
thought Nick Kayley called a bizarre game. I thought he
called the Houston Texans game. Maybe that's where we're just
getting pick it up. And then they they try to
go and they pull a parachute for a soft landing
(15:40):
and try to hold onto a small lead with the defense.
That's what they do. I don't know how much of
that is Nick Kayley, I don't know how much of
that is Dimico Ryans because it could be Amico Ryan's
coming back from the half. I was listening to the
broadcast and he said, we got to get back to
Texans football. We got to establish the run, we got
to not turn the ball over, we got to do
(16:01):
a quick passing game, like that's what Demiko Ryans wants.
And we have two coordinators back to back now that
who have done that. So at some point do we
have to say, is this our Nick Keley and before him,
Bobby Slowick under orders from Demiko Ryans to not throw
the ball down field and to run on first down
basically every time and try to take the air out
(16:22):
and try to win with the defense. So essentially Texans football.
So what essentially is happening is you're losing. You get
two football coaches that are getting reputation hits because of
the fact that slowk was not considered a great offensive
mind last year. And frankly, people are the lowest of
hanging fruit. Is let's rip on Nick Haley for the
lack of diversity in the Texans offense. Yes, and I
(16:44):
mean yeah, it's just like a lot of first down
runs or first down quick passes and not a whole
lot of inventiveness. Play action works. It just does. Even
without a running game, it still works. Yeah, pass rush
got to lit them into a little bit as it
would expect to sit with with the Chargers, and you, again,
you rely on your defense the bend but not break,
(17:05):
and they were bending quite a bit as you would expect.
I mean, look justin Herbert, even though he's gotten down
to one arm working, I mean the hand is just
in a bad spot. Uh, he can still throw the
football and still get a downfield. They don't have much
of a running game, so they were kind of basically
living off of the pass themselves. These are the These
are the first down play calls since the two touchdown drives.
(17:26):
Four yard pass run, run, run, run, run, run, run,
run run, very predictable. Yeah. Yeah, So, like I said,
I don't know, we're not in these meeting rooms or whatever.
(17:48):
It's just it's Texans football, and I know a lot
of people are upset and about the offense and all
that type of stuff. The bottom line is it's working.
They've won eight games in a row. They're eleven and five.
Let me tell what he thought they were going to
be here. There's a lot of Texans fans pissing me
off and the hand ringing and getting all mad and
defeat us. Like I have never seen a team go
on an eight game winning streak and people so pissed
(18:08):
off about it. Yeah, I would say if I'm de Miko,
I would say leave me alone. We were always saying
stretching my mask up scoreboard. Literally, he does. But the
reason why their fans are doing that is for because again,
this feels like a very familiar storyline. The difference is
(18:29):
this year's storyline than in previous years. You don't have
Kansas City, you don't have a dominant Buffalo, you don't
have a dominant Baltimore sitting in front of you, don't
even have Sinsanni for that matter. You have Denver, New
England and Jacksonville not necessarily going to scare the hell
out of you know what I mean? Yeah, I mean, yeah,
they those teams are dangerous. Not saying they're all good.
They are all yeah, for sure, But nobody's thinking the
(18:49):
texts are gonna be a cakewalk, no it, you know
what it would be. Let me ask you this, if
we were to go to a city or a state
that had casino wouldn't It would be the worst team
to to pick all four of them for small wagers, right,
and hope that the longest of the odds cash is.
I don't know. You tell me open like the four
(19:10):
biggest contenders when they got you. Well, yeah, you're probably
gonna lose money on that. I think a little bit,
I guess. I just it just feels like to me,
I'm looking at a Kentucky derby where there's four horses
that are like seven to one, eight to one, nine
to one, eleven to two. You know, it took to
December twenty ninth for what that was a great analogy.
Wait a minute, I am mister analogy. Oh I'm impressed. Well,
(19:35):
I'm sorry, I'm giving you a compliment. Yeah, but it
took you to December to say something good. I've got
more analogies. Don't worry. They won't be as good as
that one. But the field looks good for the AFC.
It just does. Yeah. And if I'm the seventh seam team,
whoever that may be, I don't think I've got a
(19:55):
I think I got just much chances the number one seed. Now, well,
I do believe eve the weather will be a factor,
and they will put Denver in New England in the
latest games possible at night. Have you noticed the NFL
loves to put games at night or where snow and
rain and wind can be fact more than anything. They
love big They love big names. So Texans Jaguars has
(20:18):
more of it. I mean, well, it's not gonna snow
in Jacksonville, but we'll see. I will guarantee you what
did we bet? Because I have three point thirty and
you have the field, I go look it up. It
was something very small ship. Yeah, something, I guarantee you
belly lunch. By the way, Denver New England are playing
(20:39):
at night, guarantee it. They want Denver at fourteen degrees
and maybe some snow. They want rain and sleet at
twenty nine degrees in New England. All right, I didn't
write down about did we just bet? It was a
gentleman's bet. It's just a how are you bragging? Point?
By the way, how's Kyle Tucker's contract cover a long time?
Speaker 7 (20:57):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
I still got a shot it, don't you know? Because
pregnant doesn't MS del yet? Who else for Fromer doesn't
ms deal yet?
Speaker 8 (21:06):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (21:07):
That was a gentleman's bet we have a drive through
lunch on yourd on ever playing one hundred and thirty
games ever in his career. We should have bumped that
up because that's that's a take. Bump it up right
now if you want. I'm ready to available. Now let's
let's see how this is a botch it goes. First,
It's ten thirty The Matt Thomas Show with Ross seven
one three two one two five seven ninety seven one
three two one two five seven ninety ten thirty seven
(21:33):
Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Now, let me tell you
what's going on the rest of the week. Tomorrow, Ryan
Hollins is going to hang out with us for a
couple of hours, hopefully celebrating a big win over the
Indiana Pacers. H Ross is off tomorrow and uh we
will also I think we're trying to get email Dooka
for few minutes on the show tomorrow, and then we're
(21:54):
going to announce our d of the Year winner. Will
announce the d of the Year finalist today at twelve.
That's kind of a time old tradition here on the
show where we have I've selected four people three in
the sports world.
Speaker 9 (22:07):
No.
Speaker 3 (22:08):
One in the non sports world. That are just the
definition of a D. And this weekend, somebody's gotta be
the D of the Year. Yes, So we'll have the
D of the Year nominees coming up at twelve thirty
today Wednesday. I am leaving earlier than I thought for
New York for New Year's the Rockets game New Year's
Day against the Brooklyn Nets. So Cole and Dan are
(22:29):
going to hang an extra hour really yes, wow? And
then wex is gonna come to eleven to one. That's
beautiful before the Texas pregame show at one o'clock when
they take on Michigan in the Cheese It Cheese Sistress
Bowl whatever, because you know, and I think cheese, it's
I think citrus. Correct. By the way, Kyle Wonningham took
(22:51):
the Michigan job with one yes. I was the play
by plan announcer for Utah Kyle Winningham's first year. Okay,
it was twenty years ago. Can you believe how long
ago it was? I cannot excellent, excellent choice. There are
very few coaches that I've dealt with in my life
that were as professional and accommodating and polite as Kyle Whittingham.
(23:15):
He is on my He's on my top five list.
Willie Fritz is on my top five list. Former Rice
al Can Hatfield is on my list. Mike d'An TONI
certainly on my list. I mean, just to have them
all in your top five. No, you can't. You have
to limit. And again I'm not I've never had a
bad experience per se. I mean, Dan, it was kind
(23:36):
of tough. Go Koges, Matt. Yeah, but you have any rainbow.
So just to put things in person, I'd like to
apologize to the University of Houston. No, No, you're You're fine.
They don't bother. They're not mad at you anymore. They've
moved on to Gordy as well. They should have you
saw and mctagger going out. Yeah, you cannot tell me
(23:57):
how you don't care about a game. After the game
is played, you may want to think that, you may
want to tell your LSU bros. That you just don't
publicly say anything about it. You just don't. I actually
didn't even catch all that.
Speaker 6 (24:08):
You know.
Speaker 3 (24:08):
I'm trying to keep the leg you know, the drama
out of my life, Matt. So I don't know if
I do live drama for free. Today I am drama
for him, relaxed. It's my last day of the year. Yeah,
I work at hard this week, putting in a one
day's work. I'm putting in tomorrow. I'll put the four
in and the we CA. But okay, so back to
my point. So, Kyle Whittingham has been either a player
or a coach at you BYU or Utah for like,
(24:30):
I mean, all of his life. I mean he is.
He's lived the Utah off. I think he's been somewhere
grat assistant somewhere else, but I mean he's lived imagine
being somewhere rossing. And I did this in my younger life.
I lived the you know, between the ages of seven
and third. I lived twenty three years here in Houston,
and I decided to make the change to move because
I was hating my boss here at the company. And
(24:51):
that person's long gone. So I'm happier from now for that.
But Kyle Whittingham could have had a job where he
could have retired whenever he wanted to. He did, he did.
He said like, yeah, I'm kind of over it, and
then the University of Michigan pops up. I thought the
skittle butt was that he was forced out of Utah
because the other guy, whoever it was, had been the
coaching waiting for like a decade. Morgan Scaley, Yeah, I
(25:13):
don't know. It's good quach in waiting since twenty twenty,
that's what I'm pulling it up. Yeah, Well he's not
having to wait anymore because Colin of him's gonna make
six and a half million dollars a year to be
the coach at Michigan, which is really good value. That's
really good value. Yeah, it's also sixty five So he's
the coach in waiting for that. Can I just tell
you though? But in holding that is such a culture
(25:33):
shot going from Salt Lake City, Utah, where if you
go eating for Utah they love you, yes, and you
got to byu. That's the big round. He's a good coach,
he's a really good coach, but the pressure is going
to go up five one hundred. Kyle doesn't know. Ohio
State Michigan legends are either made or destroyed based off
of how you do against Ohio State. Now they have
won a lot in the last handful of years. Yeah,
(25:55):
I think it's two in a row now for Ryan
Day or is it one in a row. No, it's
just one. It's just one. But point being is you're
going from nice, friendly Mountain West to Big twelve or
Pac twelve to Big twelve to the Jugna. That is
a big ten. I mean you are you are a
what would you call it thoroughbred? Would you call it
a uh yeah, blue blood? Blue blood of college football university.
(26:17):
I mean going from a nice job to an amazing job. Yes,
that's huge. Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, Texas. Now, I wonder
if the question would have been if Sharon Moore was
still there, would he have thought about going somewhere else?
Or what do you say at Utah or just a
retired I saw funny tweet it was like, good news, guys,
Kyle Whittingham only final follows eleven five girls on Instagram
(26:38):
and in his family. Y. Yeah, so that's good news. Yeah,
super guys. I'm super happy for him. He's not getting
thirsty on IG. I don't. I don't think so. Not
to saying that that people in Utah don't get thirsty
off of IG, because they do, but not as thirsty
as say a sixty five year old is married with
multiple children. Sure on Moore not so much. He's very busy.
(27:02):
Let's talk to Let's talk to our buddy Ray and
Miami Ray. It's like fifty degrees here in Houston. What's
it down in South Florida today? It's like, you know me,
like seventy eight. Oh, love it, love it. Fifties? Good
you win. You got a bunch of whiners. Sweater and
enjoy a little brisk brewing. No, no, give me seventies
(27:24):
or a bunch of winers. Give me seventies. Good stuff.
It's it's December twenty ninth. It's supposed to be cold.
Give it to me hot. I like it hot.
Speaker 10 (27:32):
Yeah, flip that, Jonathan, get young and get that. I
heard you say Lebron is the second best player of
all time.
Speaker 3 (27:42):
That is correct?
Speaker 10 (27:43):
Can I can't? Can I tell you something, brother, If
if Michael, if Michael was on the court playing three
on three and he had to pick between Lebron and Kobe,
he would pick.
Speaker 7 (27:54):
Kobe every time.
Speaker 10 (27:55):
Kobe Bryant is the second best player in the history
of the NBA, without a doubt.
Speaker 3 (28:01):
You know, I have a lot of guys, step brother,
but that's there's plenty of that. No one, no one
has ever said Kobe Bryants second greatest player at all time,
not a single human being. Kobe stands will say that, Yeah,
that's right, that's right, Toby.
Speaker 10 (28:16):
Now, now about the Texans, after watching that thriller last
night with Caleb and Brock going up and down the
field like that, matching touchdown for touchdown, and you know
we only scored like six months in the second half,
it's I don't think it's CJ.
Speaker 7 (28:33):
Because I think.
Speaker 10 (28:33):
Cj' is bedling Caleb and Brock party party. I think
it's the office. It's somebody on that sideline overthinking, because
CJ can put up thirty five twenty seven. He can
do that to Nico, get two touchdowns. Of the guys
give one, you know, somebody run one end. He can
run up twenty eight points.
Speaker 3 (28:52):
So it's not CJ.
Speaker 10 (28:54):
I think it's the offensive coordinator and you know, not
fired a guy. Only Nick that we're going to get
out of here is Nick Chubb. Nick, you're done, you're done.
You're not gonna be at Easton Texan in August see
you and I wouldn't want to be you, and we
want our money back.
Speaker 11 (29:11):
Nick.
Speaker 3 (29:12):
No, no, no, no, Nick. Here's the thing. Thanks Ray
for the phone call. I don't if anybody and you
and I were the first ones to say anything, because again,
you got the water carriers for the Texans, and you
got those fake media that go to the press conference
with the cod kiss the Texans ass. Nobody thought Nick
Chubb wasn't coming to a rush for one thousand yards.
Stupid They signed him in like July. Yeah, there was
(29:33):
a reason he is available. He is a camp body
because they probably knew that did Joe Mixon was not
going to be available for a long time or ever,
as the insider me said to Okay and the funny,
we haven't had any Joe maxon questions. No could be
available a couple off time. And see, that's that's another
thing that I mean, everybody gets all upset. Oh, the
(29:53):
offense is terrible. They're not good. Yeah, they've got no
run game and no offensive line all season long, and
they were eleven and five. I mean that's a miracle.
It's a miracle that they've been able to do what
they want. And yeah, CJ. Stroud has had some bad
games and he had some bad throws and some bad
picks that he had on Saturday. But I mean you got,
(30:14):
you've got club handed Ariante nursery out there, and then
Titus you've got a different right tackle every week. And
Trim Brown has been hurt. Yeah, and the interior has
been bad. And then and Blake Fisher actually great out
very wells is my friend's at pff? Oh did he
yeah in the last game?
Speaker 11 (30:30):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (30:30):
Okay, because he's not been good all year. He's been
fine as what he is, the the the jumbo tight end,
run package, extra alignment, He's okay for that when he's
got to run block only. Look, let's let's let's be
brutally honest. It is a significantly better offensive line today
than it was six or eight weeks ago. But you're
(30:52):
still nervous. You just are, man, and you should be.
And you know what, My guess this is a one
For instance, Buffalo has had a better job of playing
run defense the last few weeks, especially against the Eagles yesterday.
It was a low scoring game. Yeah, but if I'm
a smash player, that's right, if I'm Buffalo, am I
(31:13):
still nervous about the run defense? You absolutely should be.
Let's talk to Gordy next. He's going to tell us
how much he loves his Houston Cougar's ten forty six
on seven ninety one more staff Wagman takes a name
and the game is over.
Speaker 4 (31:28):
The Houston Cougars pick up their tenth victory of the
season and want to turn around it has been as
the Houston Cougars beat LSU thirty eight to thirty five.
They claim the twenty twenty five Kender's Texas.
Speaker 3 (31:44):
Bowl easy peasy, in front of a huge crowd of
the Texas Bowl. Shout out to all the Cougars and
for that matter, LSU fans that apparently cared about the
game because they actually spent their money on tickets. They
came from bat Rouge or from their shacks down on
the Bio, yes, and decided they want to come to
(32:05):
Houston for a little bit and watch football game. Uh huh,
so they obviously cared about the game. What about the
well the team fought back from Uh well, now they
got up early right where they're there? Fourteen nothing? Yeah,
so they must have said, we're up fourteen nothing. We
don't care about the game because that's what your Scoreedy says, Yeah, Hi, Gordy,
how are you happy New Year?
Speaker 2 (32:26):
They congrats to that?
Speaker 3 (32:29):
Can I I try to give you some stage advice
on occasion, and you don't tend to take it from
me very often. But I'm gonna give you some now.
Do not tell anybody, whether it's in group text, whether
it's on your radio show or on the in the
Twitter verse, how your team when they lose didn't care
about the game, because they were clearly caring about the
(32:49):
game when they were at fourteen nothing on the opening
and seven nothing in an opening kickoff.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
Well, but here's the difference, Matt was the two weeks
leading up to the game. I said LSU didn't care.
So there's a difference. It wasn't after the fact, I
said LIGI would care, didn't care. I said all the
two weeks leading up to the game, LSU didn't care.
I picked Houston to win. I was picking on the
known all time because I said, and I fleeded it again,
the game met way more to Houston than it did
to LSU.
Speaker 3 (33:15):
Congress, And how is a reaction on the Twitter verse?
Did that come in from you?
Speaker 2 (33:22):
Well, you know, Brian mctaggard and some cougar, some blinded
red cougar red fans. They came out like, oh, you're
a sore loser and all this, and I'm going guys,
this would be like you beating Mahomes right now with
that certain string QB that no one even knows his name.
Like it's a good team you beat, but it ain't
the best.
Speaker 3 (33:40):
Version of the Chiefs right well as because again, your
LSU players are unhappy, They probably hate themselves, they probably
failed out of school and uh thinking about some sort
of a technical career and that's fine, but just no,
it will go down.
Speaker 2 (33:54):
It will go down as one of the best wins
in U of H football in the last decade. Anytime,
anytime you can beat a seven win LSU team with
a with a with a fired head coach and interim
coach and interim o CE, a backup quarterback and twelve
opt outs stick starters out on defense, you celebrate that.
Speaker 3 (34:14):
You're telling me that Garrett nes Meyer would have done
a lot better against the Cougar's defense. Is that what
you're trying to tell me?
Speaker 2 (34:19):
Oh? Well, I mean look at what he did the
Baylor in this game a year ago.
Speaker 1 (34:22):
Yes.
Speaker 3 (34:25):
Uh, the name of your podcast is lockedown Sour Grapes.
Speaker 2 (34:31):
I'm not sour at all. No, Maszoo fans might be
sour losing to Virginia, but again their backup quarterbacks in
and they're oc left for Washington State. So the problem
is when you're an SEC team, everybody wants your players,
everybody wants your coaches, and then you play a full
price Big twelve team or your coach.
Speaker 3 (34:48):
No injuries or you fire or you fired your coach,
and you went out there and said, hey, there's no
way that LSU's going to pay out that contract win
a certain l s U insider hashtag me said that
LSU's going to pay every now. I mean, I was
right about that. You also said they weren't getting a
power for coach l s U insider. You also said
you know they were getting Laide Kiff at l s
U insider l s.
Speaker 5 (35:12):
Ting.
Speaker 3 (35:12):
I'm man, yeah, you shut you my mess up. No,
I can't bet. I can't bet one thousand though, well,
I just uh, I was so excited that Lane Kiffin
decided to stick around for when you leave, like early
third quarter, trying to beat the traffic.
Speaker 2 (35:25):
What was it?
Speaker 3 (35:26):
Why do you leave some money?
Speaker 2 (35:27):
He ain't good to any of those guys.
Speaker 11 (35:29):
They're all going to the portal.
Speaker 2 (35:30):
He's going to get his his actual team for twenty
twenty six. Already he was actually looking I heard he
was looking at some of the guys over on the
Cougar side, like going, who I want to.
Speaker 3 (35:39):
Pluck on Friday? Oh no, no, no, no, they don't
know what that. Once once a cougar, always a cougar. So,
by the way, when did Halsey decide out to play
in the game?
Speaker 1 (35:46):
Huh?
Speaker 3 (35:46):
What's up with that?
Speaker 2 (35:49):
He said he wanted to do Willie Fritz a favor.
He didn't want to embarrass him.
Speaker 3 (35:52):
Oh okay, I got you, I got you something, not
on revenge against his old team, all right. So I
just want to give you a little heads up. What
you saw on Saturday is going what you're gonna see
opening day of twenty twenty seven. So just get ready
for that. So get ready for Lane Kis season two
open up the year at oh to one.
Speaker 2 (36:09):
Look, I'm happy for you of age. I was, like
I said, I bet on them. I was root rooting
for him all week. It's a big wit. It meant
more for you of basically get assent to it in
all honesty. So I'm happy for them. But I'm telling
you right now the team that will open LSU at
twenty twenty seven. Gonna look a lot different. That gonna
look a lot different.
Speaker 3 (36:28):
Yeah, they're gonna have lots of problems with Okay, we
were looking at could you give me some voice?
Speaker 6 (36:34):
I love that.
Speaker 3 (36:35):
That was good. I mean more of that, all right,
luck Don Gordon, that sounds cool. All right.
Speaker 2 (36:40):
I am in New Orleans, so the the Cajun acts,
that comes down a little bit more here.
Speaker 3 (36:45):
Seriously, there's a rule anytime you're gonna stay Louisiana, you
have to speak in full Cajun or full New Orleans
or whatever that likenth whenever that die.
Speaker 2 (36:52):
Like wait, wait, yeah, we were over in Mothers even breakfast.
Where was your mom?
Speaker 3 (36:55):
And then, by the way, don't ask for making the others.
They will they will look at you dirty, low dirty
look there at old mothers.
Speaker 2 (37:02):
Yeah, they will give you sausage, roast, beef.
Speaker 3 (37:04):
Debris, no bacon, no bacon. All right, Gordy, Happy holidays.
We'll see you next week, all right.
Speaker 2 (37:10):
In all honesty, though, congrats to you of A. I
am happy for them, and that was a big win
and I think they are going to be a contender
for the Big twelve next year.
Speaker 3 (37:18):
I like to hear that. By the way, our schedule
next year, thanks, Gordy, is a lot harder. We have
at West Virginia at Texas Tech.
Speaker 8 (37:24):
Oh Man, who at West Virginia, at Utah, at Utah
at Kansas State?
Speaker 3 (37:31):
I think, look at who's his voice? Oh, it's Cole
Thompson for the morning show. It's the College Football Experts.
It's the Morning Kickoff.
Speaker 5 (37:38):
Listen.
Speaker 8 (37:39):
I picked you of hot takes six to ten here
on Sports. No, just correct takes that. Larry and Savarn
has to call and understand that I'm better.
Speaker 3 (37:47):
Than who takes are hotter? Yours are Dan mine.
Speaker 8 (37:51):
I am going scorching. I still do not believe in
the Jacksonville Jaguars. They are a fraudulent team. Here we go,
They're not going to do anything.
Speaker 3 (38:00):
Ever. Lawrence is a bum, all right, Stephen A. Thompson
six to ten here on Sports, and we can call
Dan William called Dan.
Speaker 11 (38:10):
Is he is?
Speaker 5 (38:11):
He is?
Speaker 11 (38:11):
He?
Speaker 3 (38:11):
Mad dog? Mad dog? Terrible take mad Dan. We'll work
on it. You ever watched that show with him? Mad Dogs?
Never reference is to nineteen seventy four, Coozy. You know
Johnny bench that ball to get buy him what yeah,
Luca Dodge that you can't hold John Hale at checks Jock. Yeah,
(38:33):
you know I saw that passing Trevor Lawns through. He's no,
John Brody, You don't know. John Brody is serious? Points
to you. Yeah, that's the uh, that's the offensive coordinator
for the Buffalo Bills. No, no, No, that's John Brady,
isn't it Brady? Sam Brady? Joe Brady doesn't matter. All right,
We're in one hour and we'll talk to Willie about
the Cougars. We have to tell them, will go yell
at you.
Speaker 6 (38:53):
Hope.
Speaker 3 (38:54):
Willy's gonna yell at Gordy go hope he does you
hear that? Gordy get ready because Willy's gonna yell at you.
I hope Elsie if she she's, she's definitely she all right?
Seven one three two one two. W got a cat
drug in lookin happy. Hold a lot of holiday traffic,
Lota Honday traffic and that traffic. It took me forty
one min It's like you two hours and forty one minutes. Jonathan,
(39:16):
good morning, do you seven one three two one two
five seven Hounty is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross
Love it o three on Sports Talk seven. Auntie matt
En Ross with you here. We have to tell the
truth coming up in about to twenty five minutes, gentlemen,
(39:39):
And by the way, Johnathan, good morning. Do you hope
things are well? Morning?
Speaker 5 (39:42):
Well, now I'm gonna get in the groove.
Speaker 3 (39:45):
Is there a really good story to this or is
it just you just you know? No good story?
Speaker 2 (39:51):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (39:51):
I have to come see you in the break anyway,
So I want to hear the story off air. I
got you. Jonathan uh decided he thought our show is
only three hours today, it's compared to the full four.
It's true. I tas, I t tas all right to
tell the truth at eleven thirty Roussel the News. At
noon twelve thirty, we have the announcement of the candidates
for the Day of the Year four Day of the
(40:12):
Year candidates three or sports Leader one or not. You'll
have that at twelve thirty. And then Rossie had the
best of Believe or Not today one to fifty. That's
a cut and paste. Can't wait, that's easy, peasy. No,
it's not easy. Piece. I had to sift through a
year of questions and whittle down the list. Yeah, we
want ten to fifteen. You only want ten ten, Yeah,
because I figured that last time went back to short.
So all right to tell the truth coming up at
(40:35):
the bottom of the hour. I will believe three of
the four things I will only lie to you about.
One of them is because you're a harder. When I okay,
you usually have some wacky ass takes. So who it's
I think it's difficult either time. And you loved my analogy. Yeah,
the good tidings between the two of us lasted very
short period of time. Seven one three two one two
(40:55):
five seven ninety seven one three two one two five
seven nine zero. Let's talk to our friend Willie about
the big Cougar when Willie, were you at the game
on Saturday, of course.
Speaker 9 (41:06):
And I'm going to tell you I am so proud
of our Cougar nation. I was praying for a good
crowd and it was spectacular. It felt like being in
an FLL game there. The last game I was at
in that stadium was when Coach Herman was around, and
(41:27):
we upset Oklahoma because Oklahoma didn't want to win either,
right exactly.
Speaker 3 (41:34):
Anyway, anytime that a bigger school gets beat by the
Cougars is always because they don't want to win. Florida
State afraid to play US at the Peach Bowl, Oklahoma
afraid to play us. Louisville afraid to play us.
Speaker 1 (41:46):
You know what. You know why?
Speaker 3 (41:48):
Because they are afraid to play us. That's why Texas
begged out of the playing in the Big Twelve. They
were tired of playing the Houston Cougars. They were tired
of having to payoff officials at Tdust Stadium to get
the calls. I get it, it makes perfect sense.
Speaker 9 (42:00):
Yeah, in the first five minutes of the game was
a little bit shaky for us, and the crowd was going,
oh no, don't tell me it's going to go like this.
But the Cougars, I think they had some nerves and
playing it for a crowd like that and great expectations,
they stepped up and that wigman, I'm going to tell you,
(42:22):
he was spectacular. Now, LSU kept coming back and it
didn't take long before they came back and tied us.
Or you know, I made the game close. That's amazing.
Their quarterback is amazing. And I'm just want to to
tell Gordy that, you know, I like to just gloat
and gloat and gloat over this but I'm going to
(42:43):
be humble.
Speaker 3 (42:44):
Oh are you kidding me? No, you look, we're trying
to kill time here during the hollyw week. Take as
much time as you need.
Speaker 9 (42:52):
Now, I would say, you know, it's it's hard to
leave a Cougar game. When we lost and people walking
out of the stadium, I'm gloating and saying, yeah, going
then got you Cougars. You know, it's not a good feeling.
So I just can't get over. When we went to
church on Sunday morning, there were smiles on people's faces.
(43:13):
A lot of people, you know, watched the game on TV.
They went to the game, and I sat with some
people that came from Edinburgh because they wanted to see
the game. I sat next to a couple who's moving
here from San Antonio because of a job transfer, and
they came just because they wanted to see the game,
and they were and they were rooting for us. So
(43:36):
it was really really nice. And we had a right
student there that was with his dad and I said,
what are you doing here? He said, I always root
for the Cougars. So it was just a beautiful time.
And we came home and watched the replay on TV.
We were up until three in the morning.
Speaker 3 (43:58):
I went to church like a little extreme thank you
Wille and happy holiday is happy church. That's nice.
Speaker 11 (44:04):
Yes, you know what.
Speaker 3 (44:05):
She's so dedicated. She double watched the game. Yes and uh.
And then she went back and got a few hours
of beauty sleep and got I win church and said, thankful,
thank the love for Cougar football America. You are blessed
by Cougar football. Now I would say blessed. I almost
say this. They they want a bowld. No one and
really cares about sixty thousand people care about They don't
(44:26):
care about the boy God, that's the last person I'm
asking about that. Here's the thing. We got to do
that at home games. There's no reason why. Look, I
don't expect forty five thousand. Look, our non conference home
game schedule is wretched. It is what it is. But
you're going for that. You're going Alabama still puts seventy
five thousand people in theirse to eighty thousand people in
(44:47):
their same when they play Austin p You're not supposed
to worry about the opponent when you are a fan
of a particular team. This team won ten games last year.
We've got Connor Wigman coming back next year. We have Chantrell. Chantrell.
What's Henderson Shaw? No, it's Henderson's first name. I'm mispronouncing
his name. Fred No side stop, Sean no key, Sean Key,
(45:11):
Sean Henderson. That's right, dual threat quarterback, some kind of sean.
It's fine. Uh, number one, we're high school recruited quarterback
coming to the University of Houston. Okay, so we got
a chance and we got a good, good as good, difficult,
big twelve slate. We're gonna be back like big boys.
Be scared. Well, you got like almost a half a
million alumni base here in the city. Yeah, here's the
(45:35):
crazy part, you know. So my guess is this is
going more into the weeds of anything. You know, each
school gets twenty million dollars to pay its athletes. That's
over the entire program. Now that thing that I remember
is gonna go up next year. That does not include anil.
That's just straight cash, homie. That's what the kids would say. Okay,
my guess is we're probably spending two million on two
quarterbacks between Henderson and Wigman. Well, it's the most important
(45:58):
position and is. But it's but you talk about it.
You know how the salary cap in the NFL is
kind of a skew. That's just making like nine million
or something. But then he's not getting all that from
the from the school. He's actually worth it. He will
be a next year. He's been favorite, is he? Why
wouldn't he be? He's the Heisman favorite this year. Oh
but if that work out, you're gonna have a nice one.
(46:20):
You're going to the cheese and bawl. He got better
as a year went along. He did get better. I
know if I was, if I'm a Texas fan, i'd
be bullish on him. Are you kidding me? I am bullish? Bullish? Now,
will you pull a Gordion if you lose to Michigan?
Will you then say, well, we didn't care about playing
the game. No, their favorite, they're supposed to win. We
gotta do that. You're supposed to play the bull. I
(46:42):
mean a lot of guys have hit the portal. They've
got no running backs right now? Did you see the
story today? It was on MSN, which I don't know
if I'm supposed to believe MSN, Yahoo, Sports, Illustrated Sporting
News all unreliable now unfortunately, Okay, but it could be true,
but let me say and maybe investigate further. Okay, I
just saw the fly you know you're going to the MSA.
(47:02):
It says all eleven starters from James Madison are in
the portal. Oh really, I mean I could believe that.
I mean, it wouldn't be far fetched about it was true. Correct? No,
that seems that seems cruel? Does it not good for them?
The coach went to the portal?
Speaker 5 (47:22):
No he did.
Speaker 3 (47:22):
He had a long gone in the portal. He was
in a portal like two weeks. Yeah, these kids got
to sit it out for a while. Yeah yeah, yeah,
I'm looking it up there. I see nine of eleven,
but this is from yesterday, Bro Bible says, I mean
they're also an aggregator, right, yeah, none of the eleven
starters expected to play nine of them in the portal
(47:44):
or maybe this is updated. Yeah, that sounds more accurate
than I think all eleven are gone or graduation apparently, yeah,
slash opt out. So needless to say, it's the James
Madison team that play. Yeah, within the last day, two
more it was nine and then two more. We're like, right, well,
let's make it it. I can't stick around for this.
I don't go three and nine next year. Yeah, but
(48:07):
that's what Jae I mean. I have some of my
closest friends in my life are North Texas fans and
went to school in North Texas as I did my
freshman year. Well, that North Texas team got depleted too.
How about the Rice quarterback is leaving after two years
through for a bunch of yards? Not even go to
quarterback Rice in a bowl game? Not grant, it's it's
they're playing Texas. But everybody wants to be the Jefferson's Matt.
(48:30):
They what a great cross reference. Thank you, Jonathan. Do
you understand when when he said he wanted to know
everybody wants to be a Jefferson not at all. They're
moving on up. We're gonna play the theme song coming
back with Deluxe Apartment. Can you find the song in Lancing?
He's Lancing. I've been the East Lancing and that great
(48:55):
kind of kind of crime ridden throw stones. Now hey,
u h guy, we're getting there. We got some trees
that are planting. We're good. Eleven twelve, We're moving on
up next. That's a Matt Thomas Child Ross seven one
three two one two five seven night. We're we're moving
(49:17):
on now.
Speaker 9 (49:19):
To these.
Speaker 3 (49:23):
Seven it's gone, moving on to these Green Bunny got
out these Please don't fine in the kit Chohan, I bean,
don't burn on the grill. Took the whole out of trying.
Speaker 2 (49:46):
I just forging up, Padre.
Speaker 11 (49:48):
Now up in the big leaves.
Speaker 3 (49:51):
You kno turn at that. Those we lived chewing me
at having all with that, We're moving on now. Oh
(50:19):
such a jam. I believe we have two brackets in
the all time theme song context. I know what you're
talking about. We have the instrumental and then we have
the spoken word with lyrics. I want to say, this
is the number one seed right it cats it. I
think we did TV themes before Fantasy five back in
(50:40):
the day, and I believe I took that number one.
So in my mind, that's the number one spoken theme song. Okay,
it's a two headed monster for number one on the
Just Music Only Sanford and Son in Dallas. Doogie Howser
(51:01):
does not make the list. Uh mash, No, I got
a hot take for your mash largely overrated show. I know,
insanely my parents and their parents' friends, but just yeah me,
Mom didn't nothlight yeah so many other shows. All right, okay,
(51:22):
so we have to tell the truth coming up at
the bottom of the Wife I oh, I'm just looking
at Oh my god. That's another good one. If you
want to go with iconic, not necessarily great, a great listen,
but iconic. Twilight Zone. Yeah, but but please you the
ear mm hmmm, I'll tell you the sopranos, even though
there's words in there. There's words. But that's another pleasing
(51:42):
the ear song night Writer, no great.
Speaker 2 (51:48):
Man that.
Speaker 3 (51:52):
I wanted a trans am when I was a kid
because of night Rider. I really yes, But you didn't
do it because of the song. You did it because
of the show. Yeah. I think it's Dallas, Sanford and Son,
Hawaii five. Oh is another Man? That's a mess short list?
I okay, So if the Jefferson is the number one
(52:13):
spoken song, I have a list somewhere of the what's
another great spoken song? Theme song? Uh? I mean the Simpsons? Oh,
instrumental Simpsons. That's a great one. Full House, Oh good times.
Full House is good. Good Times is good, good times,
(52:34):
excellent Frasers like Tier two not good, that's good. Cheers,
Cheers is growing pain? Show me that smile again?
Speaker 8 (52:47):
B J.
Speaker 3 (52:47):
Thomas. All right, we're I think we're gonna now gotta
get a bunch of calls and tweets. Maybe maybe we
never know it's holidays. We don't hear me. Thank you,
thank you, thank you, send a tweet and so well
that's not eleven o'clockers are there? Go go like my
go like my textans beam. I'm trying to get to
three thousand likes. Last television thing. Uh So, I got
(53:09):
back home the day after Christmas after the long road trip,
and we had a bunch of stuff SAVEN or DVR.
One of them was the Christmas U S Live Special
with the best Christmas kits of all time. And the
last one, which is a classic, was the Schweaty Balls segment.
Yes twenty seven years ago. Mm hmm that's about right,
(53:32):
but man, it still hits. Wasn't there mister Robinson neighborhood
where he was? He was in there too, Yes, he
was in there too. And what was the Will Ferrell
one where he's spinning around and throws up everywhere. That
must have seen it, No I didn't. And then there
was one there was the I used to I used
to watch all the weeks you've done great, you knocked
out three ones all night. E E Network used to
play the Road sure, and I used to just sit
(53:53):
down and watch them for hours. And there was the
justin Timberlake Andy Samberg, Dan about blank in a box
a bat you can say d in the box. That's fine,
all right? See where here comes these suggestions? Succession, great Instrumental,
the Love It Rock for Files Love. I have Rock
(54:14):
and Files on my phone. Simon and Simon didn't watch
it enough. Familiar with that one. Magnum p I. People
think it's pretty good. Yeah, yeah, Dynasty for your eighties drama.
Oh yeah, what about the Days of our Lives? Which
one's naughtiest theme? Oh that's the young on the wrestlers
and in the wrestles. Yeah, that's not bad either. That
(54:34):
was a hit back in the day, early seventies. Henry Mancini. Yeah,
good for you. All right, we're going to kill time.
We're not We're trying to be We're trying to spore
sports and more sports we could.
Speaker 5 (54:44):
Oh you know what sort of sports? I had a
little inside Aggie.
Speaker 3 (54:49):
We'll get okay, hold on, okay, So let's first of all,
what sport are we talking about here? Football? Are you
pill under the weather horse? Guys? How hard did you?
How hard did you?
Speaker 5 (55:06):
I had I had to look Christmas? Break hold on,
let me get to the journalist. Look, okay, so I
met I'm not gonna say the names, but I met
an aggie football player, and you know, just try with him.
You know he oh your producer? Yeah yeah yeah. And
I was like, all right, man, tell me what's going
going on with this Miami game? Like what happened? Straight's up?
Speaker 3 (55:24):
Tells me?
Speaker 5 (55:24):
He's like, we didn't we weren't gonna win. We didn't
want to win. Half the coaches that weren't even invested
in the game. Wow, I go, and I go, are
you serious? Like is that like you're not You're not?
Speaker 3 (55:36):
Yes, that's what you say. Alright, let me ask you this.
Speaker 5 (55:39):
All the coaches didn't want to play. They were all
gonna lead, They didn't really they didn't care for the
game at all, and no one had any motivation for
the game.
Speaker 3 (55:44):
Now, let's put things in perspective. Here. Line is the
offensive coordinator who is now the head coach at Kansas State.
I don't know how many other coaches left, so I
can't speak to that, But did you do your due diligence.
Did you look up this guy's name and was he
a player or was he a benchwarmer? That was like,
(56:04):
I need to play where where would you put him in?
You know, I'm gonna say he was if I gave
if I want to, don't say his name. I know
that's saying I'm saying, but like he I'll say, don't
see the position either. Mm, he's in.
Speaker 5 (56:20):
He's in in the conversations, you know what I mean.
He's not like some walk on like you know, Okay,
so he definitely played, yes at some point in time?
Speaker 3 (56:28):
Or is the right backup for somebody? Did he play
in the Miami game?
Speaker 7 (56:31):
No?
Speaker 5 (56:34):
So so this is I'm just telling y'all. I was like,
I was like, man, look that's some crazy information because
I didn't think.
Speaker 3 (56:40):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (56:40):
I feel like the vibe for A and M like
you know, playoffs, like Rosser said. I was like, you
know they're going to be and he was like, no, man,
we didn't care for that. Like that's like Gordy sour grapes.
Speaker 3 (56:50):
We lost. We didn't care. That's what I'm saying. You
gotta do you well. I appreciate your enterprise. Yes, it's enterprising,
but I want to teach you things along the way.
It's a major market radio host. Is this an underclassman
or is this a guy who was a graduating underclassman?
So is he pluning and going back to A and
M next year? Yes? Okay, So I don't know.
Speaker 5 (57:11):
I was kept thinking about what Ross was saying, how
Mike Elko isn't going to be there, And after that conversation,
I was like, man, but.
Speaker 3 (57:17):
Mikelko is going to be there, Like, but Colin Clark.
Now here's what I'm thinking. Now, I'm trying to deduce
who this is. We're not going to do it on
the air. Well, man, well, but I mean if he's
saying the coaches didn't want to be there, my assumption
assuming that this is an offensive player, because Colin Klein
is going is now in Kansas State. I mean he
he literally took the job and was running the offense,
(57:41):
and offense was kind of frankly non existent. Mis caught
a nice three points. You know who you know who
did a better job of playing special teams was the
kicker that had the overalls on for the for the
big kickoff that Pat McAfee was going on. I didn't
catch up. I'll take care word for it. Yeah, he
nearly made one. Which, by the way, why were there
no playoff games last week? Because they want to they
(58:03):
want to wait for January first. I guess they want
to give you, Mady, two weeks to prepare. I'm squirmish
like you are. I don't. I don't disagree with you.
Let's play the game there was. There wasn't. Okay, there
was Bowl games on Saturday, or a couple of NFL games. Look,
you weren't going to lose a championship game was or
quarter final? Was not gonna lose to Baltimore Green Bay.
It just wasn't. I don't think it would have, right,
(58:26):
I guess, yeah, you want to It was on Peacock.
We have not gotten to something we'll do after uh,
to tell the truth, Rich Eisen, Okay when we come back. Nope,
to tell the truth next ooh, and to tell the truth. No,
(58:47):
I's I did to tell the truth. This is the SI.
This is side commentary. Okay, So I got to tell
the truth, Rich Eisen, News and Noon, that's the next
half hour. You want to join a seven one three,
two one two, five, seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (59:05):
I never know, but I do.
Speaker 3 (59:19):
I do tell the truth. Now. I'm also a good liar,
and I'm lying to you on one of these four. Okay,
three of the four. I believe three out of four.
That means, Jonathan, how many truths are in the mix?
Speaker 1 (59:34):
One?
Speaker 3 (59:34):
Who's on the phone. That's fine, Buying all these age
fans saying who's the unhappy? Hagg always confuses me. Three
truths because you switch it up every week. I know
it's messed up. It's hard enough to come up with
a bit. I know, all right, Jonathan. Three truths, one lie,
three truths, one lie, one line, let me boldness underline.
(59:54):
Here we go, which one of the four? Am I
not telling the truth? One part of what makes me
a good radio host is the ability to not follow
my sword on certain takes. Some things I don't move
off of mess with you. Here comes one I'm going
to Okay. I watched the second half of that Philadelphia
(01:00:15):
Buffalo game. Yes, momentum shifted big time towards Buffalo. Philadelphia
couldn't move the ball at all in the second half.
Buffalo got the touchdown, they fall behind thirteen twelve. I'm
glad that the Buffalo Bills went for two. I know
they didn't get it, but you know, I'm me. I'm
always mister, let's go for the tie and let's go
to overtime. Buffalo in the right call. Even though it
(01:00:37):
didn't work, it was still the right call. Okay, okay.
Number two, they have something in the NBA called the
sixth Man of the Year Award. Yes, Reed, Shepperd will
be in the top three of that six Man of
the Year Award. Bound Bound, bou Bound. I think Lou
(01:00:58):
Williams Crawford are the favorites. Eric Gordon, you don't forget that.
Speaker 6 (01:01:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:01:05):
Number three, I think the Ravens will go to Pittsburgh
next weekend and beat the Steelers. Sorry Dez. Texans play
at Baltimore in the wild Card round h and that
can very well be a night game because Baltimore weather
sucks too. They're putting Jacksonville at three thirty on Saturday.
(01:01:26):
So you're you're you're catching a break here on this one,
all right. I think you're gonna win your bet. Yeah,
but I don't know what we bet. It's a hand
chicken out of boy. Ravens went in Pittsburgh. Texans play
at Baltimore in the wild cart. And number four, Giannis
Dent the Goomboo will be traded by the NBA deadline.
(01:01:49):
Hmm okay, so let me recap the four. There are
three truths and one line. Number one, I'm changing my tune.
Buffalo made the right call going thirteen to twelve, going
for the two point. As a matter of fact, if
the pass was better thrown, they had have won the game.
Number two, I think Reied Shepherd is going to finish
(01:02:10):
top three in the sixth Man of the Year Award
in the NBA. Just my take. Okay, these aren't facts, Okay.
Number three, I think the Ravens winn in Pittsburgh on Sunday,
Texans play at Baltimore in the wild Card. And number four,
I think, yeah, it's just going to be traded by
the deadline. Which one of those four am I telling
you lie? The other three I'm telling you the true.
Speaker 2 (01:02:32):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:02:32):
It's kind of a tough one because none of these
takes are crazy. Thank you, John, thank you very much.
I mean, hey, John, you won last week. I heard
see usually Matt's way out of pocket.
Speaker 5 (01:02:40):
I'm trying to get me.
Speaker 3 (01:02:41):
And the first one is a fifty to fifty. You
can argue both ways whether or not the Bills should
have gone for two, so they have all the momentium.
I mean, you need to get two yards, and you
have Josh Allen, and you need to go for the
Wines week seventeen.
Speaker 5 (01:02:56):
Honest, getting trip by the deadline.
Speaker 3 (01:02:57):
I don't know where though. I don't know if that's
gonna happen. I don't know how in tune Matt is
with the with the This is another thing. I don't
have the information. How in tune is Matt with the
six Man of the Year race. I mean, he does
call all the Rockets games top three. I guess I
(01:03:25):
don't know Matt's frame of reference. I don't know if
he knows the who the favorites are for six Man
of the year. Matt, who's the favorite for six Man
of the year right now? It is Nikhill, Alexander Walker,
the Atlanta Hawks. He must be googling this. I did, huh.
(01:03:49):
I'll go with I mean, Ravens could win at Pittsburgh,
Texans could play at Baltimore. Yeah, four seems just kind
of blair. Two seems I'll go with two. You don't
believe that I think that Reach ever gonna be a
top three or six man the year. Okay, what do
you say, Jonathan.
Speaker 5 (01:04:13):
I'm going with the honest.
Speaker 3 (01:04:15):
I'm going for Okay. I do believe the Ravens will
win in Pittsburgh on Sunday. Okay, I mean you, now, look,
the Steelers have pulled off some big victories this year,
but my god, Cleveland's terrible. You couldn't score in Cleveland
at all. It's not about the defense. It's about the
fact that Aaron Rodgers can't move the ball down the field.
(01:04:37):
That's embarrassing. Sorry, Pittsburgh fan. I mean nine and eight,
it's just Mike tom Mike Tomlin with a bad quarterback
going nine and eight. Ravens are the better football team.
They will win in Pittsburgh. They'll play in the Texans.
Put the Ravens in Baltimore. The line on that bad
boy cure, I'm not looking on me. Look all right,
I'm gonna get let's guess. I'll say Ravens minus two
(01:04:57):
and a half is lamarsvill. I haven't pulling it up. Oh,
Ravens three and a half, pretty decent on the road.
Three with a hook. Next, ummm, let's see which what
do I believe. I do believe sadly that Janna is
gonna be traded by the deadline. I'm sorry about that, Jonathan,
(01:05:19):
your winning streak is over worth it one. I feel
like Jake Myers right now, man, I think it's gonna
be a super super busy trade deadline because it's like,
I'm just like in the NFL, there's about eighteen I
think they can win the whole thing now. Whether Oklahoma
City will allow that or not is but the East
is wide freaking open. San Antonio has done something to
(01:05:39):
show that there is a cheek in the armor of
the Oklahoma City Thunder. I think he's going east. I
think the East is completely wide open, and I think
Ganis is gonna move out of Milwaukee. That's my thought
on that. Okay, the last one, boys, I do believe
Reed Shepherd is going to finish top three and six
Man of the Year Awards. You know what what here
(01:06:01):
are the candidates, Nikhil, Alexander Walker, naz Reed, Anthony Black
of the Magic, the Magic gonna fall out of it,
nom will know who he is. Jimi Hakez, the Heater
gonna finish eighth or ninth in the East Reed Shepherd
is gonna get a lot of national run and national
TV games do affect these awards. Okay, I'll hold you
to that one. It's fine to make fun of me
(01:06:21):
if you want to. I am not changing my tune.
Even though the pass was thrown poorly. See, you're still
resulting already in thinking I almost went with one. No,
because here's the almost went with one. Momentum was on
their side, Philadelphia could not move the ball. Momentums on
your side. You can get two points, you can get
two yards, but I don't. I don't want any game
(01:06:41):
to go down to one play. How long is the
How is the momentum on your side? And you're saying
that argument means you should go for it because you
can get two yards with Josh just because you have
momentum doesn't mean you can't be perfect momentum and perfect
perfection or two different things. They literally just missed the
extra point. That's why they That's why they were down one.
They literally really just missed an extra point with Michael
(01:07:02):
Badgely they're back. They still had momentum. So I want
to take the momentum. I want the big picture of
the of the overtime over the small sample size of
a missage. What if you lose the coin flip and
they go and score, then you don't have the momentum.
Speaker 11 (01:07:14):
No, you have.
Speaker 3 (01:07:14):
You each seem it's a chance out of test, so
I know you get the ball back, but then you
haven't you momentum I think is totally overblown and overrated.
So I'm just I'm just talking about your yards you
this particular case, if you have the momentum, then you
lose the coin flip and the Eagles get the ball
first and then score. Didn't you didn't you lose all
the momentum you say you have, because that's more of
a macro view. That is, you're you're thinking that you're
gonna allow filled Alfie to score when you didn't allow
(01:07:35):
them to score in the second half. Like I said,
I'm okay with the argument, but to say they had
all the momentum, that means you go for it and
get two yards, especially when your kicker just missed and
that's your point and it's Michael Badgeley, you're backup. I
just hate for all that momentum to go for nothing
when you on one single play, that's when you lose
the momentum.
Speaker 1 (01:07:55):
You got.
Speaker 3 (01:07:55):
Josh Allen, you need two yards. I'm macro.
Speaker 5 (01:07:58):
Don't try to argue Ross.
Speaker 3 (01:07:59):
I know you're right. It's bad.
Speaker 5 (01:08:00):
We already have a turn for this.
Speaker 6 (01:08:03):
His brain.
Speaker 3 (01:08:05):
Don't look at me. That alright, Okay, mister alarm clock
all right? Get him said, don't say you didn't say
nothing when he said something that you know what you did.
You pulled a Ross m Matt Thomas. No, it's funny
(01:08:26):
because all the guys on the Fox postgame show said
what do you do? And I'm not using it fifty
to fifty? It's fifty fifty it really you can argue
either way. Of all the people on the set, the
only person said go for to was Terry Bradshaw. Michael
Strahan said, don't do it. How he Long didn't say it.
Rob Gronkowski didn't say they said. I think if they
got it, there would be a lot less You're may
be right, Uh, there would be a lot less criticism
(01:08:48):
you go for it. You're also it's you're You're this
late in the season. You haven't been moving the ball
all game. It's rainy. Your kicker just missed the ball.
Your kicker just missed the extra point before. Or you
have Josh Allen and you need two yards. Yeah, I
don't understand, I understand. I just I thought, if I'm Philadelphia,
(01:09:10):
I am really really happy that I played as poorly
as I did. I came up with one play and
I was able to save the game. Or Buffalo dominated
the second half of that contest because from the final
play when it counted. That's tell the truth. Don't hate
me too late, we're gonna do something like, oh we
gotta tome about Richeyes when we come back, Richard Eisen,
(01:09:34):
I'm gonna be careful and I when I do the
analysis on this eleven forty three on Sports Talk seven
ninety eleven. It is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
I hope you guys are enjoying and ladies a nice
off week. It feels like again traffic was minimal. If
you're working, go tell your ask your bosses why you are. Secondly,
(01:09:57):
you deserve some extra time off, maybe a little bit
of a bonus hourly wage increase on this, whatever the
case may be. All Right, we have the news in
noon coming up. In ten minutes from now, we'll have
our d of the year nominees will announce at twelve
thirty here today on the show and the Best I
believe or not at one fifty. All right, Rossie rich
(01:10:19):
Eisen a remarkably successful career, long time at ESPN, longtime
NFL network, longtime radio host. Not my cup of team
in the iHeart family, No oh ESPN family, No, no, no,
long gone from that. Oh sorry, that's okay, And I
would and even if he was, I mean, we have
crappy hosts in the Premiere family. I mean we had
(01:10:41):
that horrific odd couple show that we've run and then
Ben Mallards a disgrace. But that's a different issue of
a different time. So bottom line is this. He has
a wonderful national, big time career, and he's worked at
the NFL for a long period of time. In the
NFL A handful of years ago. Remember starting hearing some
NFL games and they'd let him broad do the play
(01:11:03):
by play with Kurt Owner, who I think Kurt Owner's
very good. Kurt Owner does the Westwood One radio games
with Kevin Harland on Monday nights, and they have a
good combination that really work well. And I think Kurt
Owner is an excellent analyst. Rich Eisen isn't a ply
by play guy, And there are a lot of things
(01:11:24):
that you have to determine in your life. You can
be a great salesperson, but you may not be a
great sales manager. Yes, you might be a good accountant,
but you're not going to go out on the oil
fields with the guys and complete the task. For instance,
I'll give you an example of my broadcast career. I
think I'm a pretty good talk show something. I've been
(01:11:44):
able to do it for a long time. I think
I'm a pretty good play by play guy. I mean
in the NBA, ten years in college for on top
of this, about twenty five. I am not a good analyst.
I've been in the analyst's chair a handful of times,
and I suck at it. It's not I don't. I
am more about the meat and potatoes, not how it
was cooked. Okay, wow, that's pretty good. Right, it's not bad.
(01:12:06):
But you got my drift on. You are a little
more analytical than I am. Yes, I don't. I've never
tried play by play, but I don't think that would
be great at it. Yeah, I mean you have you
need more attention to detail, let's say that I have
that probably ends a conversation right there. So but so
(01:12:27):
if I was asked to do color analysis on a basketball, football,
or baseball game, I would not be very good at it.
I could, I've done it before and you know, if
you pinch any but I to do a full time
analysts would not be where my strength would be as
a broadcaster. Now, I can analyze enough things to have
conversations on the show. But if you watch you know,
(01:12:47):
like Tom Brady's improved, if you see uh, you know,
Kirk Herbstreet, they're dialing up where the blitzers are coming,
and the cover two's and the all the minutia of
having played the game. And I think to be an
analyst and not play the game put you at a
severe disadvantage. I mean, there's some guys that can't do it,
but most people that are analysts have played the game
(01:13:09):
at some point in their life. So that being said,
Richison is an excellent studio host. His talk show to me,
is more about celebrities than it is about sport and interviews,
and that to me at people again he is that's
his forte. He was getting annihilated and it wasn't just
(01:13:30):
from Houston fans. I went and looked at Richison on Twitter. Well, oh,
social media's crushing somebody. We don't, let me tell you,
we don't we do. We don't crush uh, Kevin Burkhart,
We don't crush Mike Tarico. We don't crush Mike small
amounts and nobody's immune from crush. Plan hates Mike Bring,
(01:13:50):
but I'm glad it hates everybody. That's true. My point
is this, there are fans across the country like, get
Richison off my television. He is an f Well, if
I say he's NFL replacement level, what would you say
to that. He's not terrible, but he misses small things.
(01:14:11):
I noticed a couple of times, For example, Woody Marx
would get a little bottled up and he would call
it as a one or two yard run, and then
he would run, but he it looked like he would
see kind of the end of the play and he'd
start looking down at his board to try and I
don't know, find out who made the tackle, or he's
maybe checking with his spot, or he wasn't keeping his
(01:14:31):
eyes on the action. There was a couple of times
where he missed things that were like he didn't finish
the call of the play a few times, like where
he just wasn't he just wasn't all there. And here's
the thing, it's not a one off for him. He
does five or six games a year, so you would
think and maybe it's the he doesn't have a play
by play voice, which is part of the requirement. It
just is what it is. Either you have a voice
(01:14:53):
or you don't. You're giving it to you by God
or whomever or cigarettes.
Speaker 2 (01:14:58):
Ugh.
Speaker 3 (01:15:01):
I don't think he's replacement level. I think he's worse.
He's it's he's the worst play caller in the NFL. Wow.
And he was calling a really big game between two
playoff teams. It was given a prime spot. I mean,
the NFL network got to choose the two games they want,
or the the NFL scheduled it for a reason. They
(01:15:23):
put that game on because they wanted people to see it,
lots of people across the country. I thought it was
a disservice. I just I just didn't think it was
very good. I think it was that bad. But also, yeah,
he's not good. I mean he, like I said, replacement level.
He's at the Mendota let's let's give a baseball example.
Uh he's, uh, well, it's a playoff game, and uh,
(01:15:44):
you go get Scott van Pel to play. Scott's an
excellent sports center host. Scott is an excellent interviewer. Okay,
his playboy play probably is a little bit desired. And
I thought you were going to say he's the Nick
Allen of broadcasting. I thought we were gonna go that way.
Was Nick Allen the the guy the Astros traded for
for Maurice or Duba sounding even know who that is.
It's fine, it is fine. It was just a real
(01:16:13):
replacement level like Medley Spires. But you but it's December Ross.
I understand player. Yeah, you want better. You could have
plucked anybody from either one of the two networks, because
other networks Fox has given NFL Network also NFL networks. Probably,
I mean they've been chedding payroll, especially since ESPN got him,
so I mean they're probably not looking to cut extra checks.
(01:16:36):
I don't know what to make Rich Eyson do it.
I mean, but rich Eisen ain't doing it for his health,
is he? I mean, I would think you wouldn't be
I don't know if it's I don't know what, I
haven't checked his contract. And remember again this is I
don't want to come across as well, Matt. You love
to have his job. Of course I would love to
have his job, but by Matt jealous. Yeah, this is
about pleasing to the ears. Yeah, he's not very good.
(01:16:57):
And I just thought it was I thought it was
a miss by NFL network. Like Spiroddas didn't work this
weekend because NFL and CBS ANDD only had a handful
of games. Case in point, you got a week off
from the AFC South. Yeah, there were four games on
CBS this week. Two of them were really awesome. Well, yeah,
youo sucked. I mean you had three Christmas games, two
Saturday games, and you have a Monday night you had
(01:17:17):
oh yeah, Kevin Harland and Trent Green doing the Giants
Raiders game. I mean, those poor men, Now, granted they're
making millions of dollars, but that's not they deserve this
late in the season. Pretty rough, all right. We had
a lovely day in the city Houston, Yes we did.
We had the Texans, we had the Cougars, we had
the Rockets. We'll play that plus the news at noon
(01:17:38):
next eleven fifty seven on Sports Talk seven ninety is
the Matt Thomas Show with.
Speaker 12 (01:17:44):
Rossday Sports Rvy Chris Corny's Cougars winning.
Speaker 3 (01:18:00):
Yes, congratulations to the Cougars, battle Red Rosses Season one
season Bowl champions, Texas Bowl, the well the King of
the lone Star State. I don't think so. It says
Texas Bowl. If you're a Texas Bowl champion, you are
a Texas The championship teams in Texas made the playoff. Yeah,
one only score afield goal M and one's got a
(01:18:23):
grumpy player. Probably a few more grumpy ones too, especially
if you didn't play all right. Is a twelve o
four on Sports Talk seven. I'm kind of uh anxious
to see well you guys cauld Remember you guys get
votes for D of the Year that's coming up at
the bottom of the crew. Who are the nominees. You'll
find out in twenty five minutes. Okay, now you're gonna
hear that sounder. It's been a while of the year.
(01:18:45):
Normally I'm out for around this time of year for
D of the Year voting. You know what you guys
are gonna be able to do? I will I will
put it on the Twitter. You Jonathan, You and Ross
should be the first two that get to vote. Okay, great,
kind of said an early trend. Sure what there are
four nominees. Oh really three of the four are sports related?
(01:19:06):
When are we posting these twelve thirty? Okay, Well, now'nce
some first and I'll put them on Twitter at got wonderful?
All right, let's get to the news at noon please,
and with that at twelve o five Sports Talk seven
hunty we present he Littles at noon. Yes, Matthew, well
you mentioned it was a lovely day on Saturday, the
(01:19:27):
Houston Texans getting the victory over the Los Angeles Chargers.
I got a little close, back to back long touchdowns
on the opening two drives. You get up fourteen to nothing.
Then you could only muster three points in the third quarter,
three points in the fourth quarter, but the dfence held
(01:19:47):
on for the Houston Texans. They have won eight games
in a row. They are eleven and five, clinching a
playoff spot. And matt I was asked this over the
week on the Twitter verse. We'll discuss for this further too.
By the way, if Damiko Ryans is the greatest coach
in Texans history, we will discuss later on just Go.
(01:20:08):
I have marinate on that folks 'ait to that next
segment matter. Okay, great CJ. Stroud sixteen of twenty eight,
two hundred and forty four yards, a couple of touchdowns,
but a couple of really bad picks. Total QBR with
one hundred being perfect, fifty being average. He was fifty
two point four, so just above average by that metric.
Woody Marks, I'm sorry, Matt. I'm sticking with my gut
(01:20:29):
feeling from last week. He's not gonna be RB one
next year. He's kind of just a guy three point
seven yards per carry, I know, not getting a whole
lot of help from the offensive line. There should not
be a single running back that thinks they should be
buying a property in Houston, Texas. But I will also
say this to the Texans fans who are angry about
these wins. They've won eight in a row. Shut your
bomb ass up. They don't say anyone describe who angry
(01:20:50):
for that. There's literally people who are tweeting me. I
was like fighting with people on Twitter like this offense
is terrible. They should be embarrassed. We took a call
Ray in Miami, said Nick Cassario. What did he say?
Speaker 8 (01:21:00):
Or no?
Speaker 3 (01:21:01):
And actually said Nick Chubb needs to give his paycheck back,
Like all right, relax, people are crushing Nick Cassario. It's fine,
It's not great, could be better, but yeah, if they
had a dominant offense, we'd be talking about an all
time great team. They're not an all time great team.
But you know what, nobody's an all time great team
right now this year in the NFL. Maybe over there
on the NFC side, but you're only gonna have to
(01:21:21):
play one of them if you can make it out
of the AFC. You've beaten the Bills. You've beaten the
Colts before Daniel Jones went down, beaten the Chiefs before
Pat Mahomes went down. You've beaten the Jaguars on this
winning streak with Daniel Jones, I mean with Davis Mills.
So I know I'm not gonna be here tomorrow or
the rest of the week. Let me shut you my
(01:21:41):
mass up.
Speaker 2 (01:21:42):
Are you angry?
Speaker 3 (01:21:43):
People are acting angry about the Texans winning, but I digress.
Rockets also got a victory over the uh who do
they play on Saturday? The Cleveland Cavaliers. Cavaliers are so
mid right, now one hundred to seventeen to one hundred.
Got a big game from Kevin Durant. Didn't he been
playing the fourth quarter? I think the only starters had
played in the fourth or maybe Atari and a men
(01:22:04):
a man played yep, so you got. You took care
of business against the Cleveland Cavaliers, no letdowns. I was
a little worried because they were on the road for
six and then came home, only had the one day
off and then you're at the Toyota Center again. Even
though you're at home, you're still pretty of the players.
I wasn't worried about you. Add all your fight and
your private jet and your five diamond commendation. They were
also the same. They're all yeah, but they also work
(01:22:26):
out and played forty eight minutes. You don't do any
of that, that's true. You just sit there for a
forty eight minute. I mean you walk down and get
half time popcorn. But I mean that's not tiring. You
have too much. It's fair by the way Rockets and
Pacers played tonight. Rick Carlisle will try for his ninth
straight game to win his one thousandth NBA game. He
is nine to ninety nine and eight eighty six and
(01:22:49):
twenty four NBA seasons. Truly one of the grumpiest human
beings alive. Was he named one of the fifteen best
coaches of all time. He's probably close. You keep going
on the news, No way, I was keep going on
that Marcus Freeman back with Notre Dame. I'm gonna imagine
there will be an announcement with a fresh contract here.
But the only news now Marcus Freeman tweeting I'm back,
(01:23:09):
go Irish. So there had been a lot of talk
about him possibly becoming the New York Giants head coach.
He said, I'm good. Imagine he got a big raise.
Marcus Freeman staying with the Notre Dame firing Irish. I
would say, I'm a little bit surprised because we talked
about how difficult that job is a long term also,
(01:23:29):
I mean NFL jobs. Now, sure the pressure is probably higher,
but I mean, isn't that much higher than being at
Notre Dame. You don't have to deal with to portal,
you don't have to deal with transfers, you don't have
to deal with recruiting, you have to deal with boosters,
you have to deal with any of that. But Marcus Freeman,
tweeting twenty twenty six run it Back, Go Irish Shine.
So he is not on that list? Okay, uh, I
(01:23:53):
want to see we got any more news before we
do this? Yeah? One more, a couple more things. Actually
Anthony Joshua, you know he was in that big fight
with Jake Paul last week knocked him out. Sad news.
He was in Nigeria and he was in a car
crash and his personal trainer and his workout coach died.
(01:24:15):
He was Anthony Joshua. Anthony Joshua, who won that fight,
was in Nigeria in Alexis suv. Apparently there was a
blowout of a tire and the vehicle hit a non
moving work truck. Two people dead. Anthony Joshua injured but
going to be okay. But yeah, just unfortunate in an
accident in Nigeria. So there you go. There's some sad
(01:24:38):
news there unfortunately, but it is the news at noon.
We bring you the news, no matter what it is.
Speaker 1 (01:24:41):
Ye.
Speaker 3 (01:24:42):
One more quick thing, Matt before you get to your thing.
Kawhi Leonard dropping a career high fifty five. I thought
he couldn't move. Are the Clippers gonna be good. Now
the Clippers think they've went four in a row. When
Derek Jones comes back from injury, they can make a
playoff push. They've won four in a row. Kawhi Leonard
went off for forty one against the Rockets and then
now fifty five against a good Piston's physical defenseiate game. Yep,
(01:25:06):
something to keep an eye on the I hope not.
I want to keep an eye on him at all,
as your Rockets are in the five seed currently in
the West. Go ahead, Matthew, All right, So let's say
how you do on your top fifteen coaches of all time.
You're a pretty good history trying to see him you
can get. You start with Red Hourback and Phil Jackson,
check and check. Lenny Wilkins. Yes, Eric Spolster's in there. Yes, Uh,
(01:25:30):
you gotta have pat Riley in there, Greg Papavila. Also,
pat Riley's in there. Greg Papovich is in there. Okay,
there's one you're not gonna get under any circumstance. Maybe
even Jack Ramsey. Jack Ramsey is in there. You got seven.
I'm proud of you. Oh Jesus, I don't know. Let's
(01:25:54):
throw a Let's throw a Bill Fitch in there. Bill
fisch On in there, said him. So Rick Carlyle, Carlisle
is not in it. Donnie Nelson, don Nelson is in there.
That's eight. I'm sorry this Rick Adelman, Rick Adelman not
in there. Let's strike two. When we get strike three one? Um,
(01:26:16):
I said, did you get did? I say, Bill Fitch,
Yes you did. Okay, he's in there, he's not strike okay,
I said Phil Jackson. I I don't know, Just give
me the Okay. Here's you got eight of the fifteen.
That's not that's not bad at all. You got a Boch,
(01:26:37):
you got Jackson, you got Nelson, you got Papovich, you
got Ramsey, you got Riley, and you got Spolstern Wilkins.
Here's the ones that you miss You missed seven of them.
Larry Brown, duh, Chuck Daily. Yeah, I guess I should
have got that Red Holzman. That's when you're not gonna
do the Chicago bulls. I want to say him the
best Casey Jones, I wouldn't have got that one. Uh,
(01:26:59):
Doc Rivers, you know what I should I read that
last week. I should have known that, even though I
don't think he deserves and the last one Jerry Sloan. Yeah,
Jerry Sloan was a good one too, So there you go.
I mean, if I had time, I could have fleshed
it out, let me tell you. But it's live again
for doing a live radio and I don't expect much
of me. You gave me better than fifty percent. There
you go, Thank you. All right, that is the news.
(01:27:19):
At noon, bottom of the hour, we make our grandiose
announcements about who the D of the Year candidates are.
D of the Year.
Speaker 1 (01:27:26):
I love it.
Speaker 3 (01:27:27):
I love it. It's only played like two times in
December thirtieth and thirty first, and we don't work on
January first. But all right up next second or second?
You and I just our last show together the year
by I'm working tomorrow. You are not. I'll have Ryan
Hollins with me for a couple of hours tomorrow. About that.
You guys going Hibachi or you wait for me? Now
(01:27:48):
for me? My brother Kyle tekka, Kyle can't a forty
You didn't have a contry patrition number was pretty good?
All right up next the question that Ross was posed
on Twitter, we'll discuss it next. It involves Demiko Ryans
twelve fourteen on Sports Talk seven ninety Matt and Ross
(01:28:09):
with you, and we've got the d of the Year
nominees coming up at the bottom of the hour. By
the way, John, and we need some like some Academy
Award music. If you want to go look on the
YouTube and see what's going on. Just okay, five six
minutes of award music. We'll have the nominees, and of
course we'll not name the winner of the Day of
the Year because you guys through the vote, will make
(01:28:29):
that up coming up at the bottom of the hour.
All right, Rossie, So you got a question on Twitter
that is intriguing to me that I believe could give
you multiple answers. It'd be one of those good debate points.
And I always tell you, as a minor in speech
communication at the University of Houston, that a good debate
means one you can take either side and win. That
is true. Yes, I was asked after the Texans won
(01:28:51):
on Saturday against the Los Angeles Chargers and clinched a
playoff spot. Is Dimiico Ryans the greatest head coach in
Texan's history? All right, So you have to decide between
postseason success in which nobody's had any length of job,
which is Dimiko's the shortest, biggest, biggest accomplishment, and biggest blemish.
(01:29:17):
Meaning if you were like if you were Jack Party
and you were on the field coaching that game you
lost Buffalo Bills, you can't. You'll never be named the
greatest orders coach in all time because of that. So
there hasn't been a blunder so bad in Dimiko's career.
The biggest thing that hurts Tomiko is the lack of
time on the field. Three years, three championships and at
(01:29:40):
this point no AFC Championship game. Now that could obviously
change this year. It's a battle between for me Koobiac
because the end of the Bill O'Brien era included well
also frankly of uh Gary was the same way. A
(01:30:04):
lot of losses, a lot of questioning of who was
running things. Bill O'Brien was a surly mfer and he
still has a certainly em efort to this day. He
brought Jackie easter Be into the fold. Yeah, but I
mean were talking about on the field though. Yeah, We're
not talking about the general manager skills or the people
a running. We're talking about just the game day this.
I mean because look, Dimiko has his flaws too. I
(01:30:25):
think he's terrible with his timeouts, he's not granted the
two minute drill. He's lousy on his challenges. But that's
really the case of any coach has been with the Texans.
All right, let me, I guess you lay out the resumes.
Gary Kubiak under five hundred, sixty one and sixty four,
two AFC South championships, two and two in the playoffs. Now,
(01:30:47):
he did also take over for dom Capers, dom Capers
who was building up an expansion. So would it would
would have Demko had as good of a record or
had a better record than Gary did in those early years.
Don't know that. We we'll never know. Continue uh. And
then Bill O'Brien four AFC Soyle championships, but two and
(01:31:10):
four in the playoffs, fifty two and forty eight in
one hundred games, so he's got the most win percentage.
He's got two CAFC Soyle championships and he's not probably
not getting a third, but he is making the playoffs
for a third season. So four playoff berths with four
AFC style championships for Bill O'Brien, I guess he's the
(01:31:34):
standard I'm gonna go off of there's nobody in front
of Demico that has a sizeable lead off of anything
in that the biggest blemish against Demiko is the fact
he's not done it long enough. I'll just say three years,
three titles is win percentage in terms of going to
(01:31:54):
the playoffs as one hundred percent. That's hard to beat.
And again, it's not like Demko and Bill O'Brien have
this awesome resume that says, wait a minute, hold on
a second. I will say Demiko Ryans is the greatest
coach in Texans history. With that being said, if Dimko
was all of a sudden, Sam I'm quitting tomorrow and
a year from now, a one year coach comes in
(01:32:14):
and takes the Texans to an AFC championship, he would
be supplanted as a coach. The first coach that takes
the Texans the AFC title game will be with the
best coach in Texans history. I'd forgotten about the Romeo
crenell Era or what's his name, David David Cully, then
Lovey Smith. Yeah, who's the worst tech coach in Texans history?
Of David Kelly by far, even though he won four games,
(01:32:37):
Lovey Smith only won three, doesn't count with a tie
against the Colts, Right, David Cully was never supposed to
be an NFL head coach. What has he been doing
since collecting in Texans paychecks? Hannah is not happy. He
has not had a coaching job since being the head
coach of the Tech. He's done. He just went and retired. Yeah,
(01:33:00):
Ko Ryans is the greatest coach in Texas history. It's close.
I agree. I agree, best win percentage about to be
have three playoff bursts only short of Bill O'Brien. Those
are really bad divisions. He was winning at nine and
seven and going nine and seven every single year. Oh
(01:33:21):
and by the way, the only only slide about Demico
is he's the King and every coach does this, so
he's not in the same category, but he's in a
similar category. He talks about all the adversity they had.
You know, the university, you created adversity in three that's adversity. Yeah,
they had some adversity though they've had not had Joe
Mixon all year long. Offensive line has been terrible. His fault,
their fault. They've only had one, but they started off
(01:33:43):
with one good past catcher being Nico Collins, their fault
and Schult has been good. Roster Higgins and Jalen Noel
have been developed. Yeah, it's not adversity. It's just it's
just some adversity. No, I disagree, one hundred percent disagree.
They've had a bunch of guys heard along the offensive line,
as is most teams in the NFL. So they overcame
some adversity. Matt, you start oh and three and you
(01:34:04):
go eleven and five. Who created the own three to
the NFL? Hand them?
Speaker 2 (01:34:09):
Yes they did.
Speaker 3 (01:34:10):
Yeah, they played the three games and they lost. You
can create your own adversity. I can become a recovering alcoholics.
Speaker 2 (01:34:15):
I fail.
Speaker 3 (01:34:16):
I'm an alcoholic. That doesn't mean I didn't overcome adversity.
I'm done with it. You know what I hate adversity.
Adversity is being dealt a bad hand. There nobody dealt
them in the hand. If you can tell yourself, you
can deal yourself a bad hand too and overcome. Absolutely.
I think adversity is a way overused term. Everybody in
their mother uses it. Ust say, he's not the only one.
Speaker 8 (01:34:37):
I know.
Speaker 6 (01:34:38):
I know the term.
Speaker 3 (01:34:39):
Doesn't you you don't like it? It sticks in your crawl.
Speaker 9 (01:34:43):
It does.
Speaker 3 (01:34:43):
But and I could be wrong without there were three
and five. I doubted they were making the playoffs. You
declared they weren't making the playoffs. Yeah, and they made it.
They you know what they did, I'll give you the
fairer term. They created obstacles and they overcame them. They
overcame some obstacles, some self created and some not. Yeah,
but their fault. Joe Mixon did whatever the hell is right,
(01:35:06):
but they didn't address it. That's their fault for that.
With what they could have they drafted a running back
and then they signed a veteran I don't know. I mean,
I guess they could have traded for They could have.
They could have got what's his face out of the
Jets Breese Hall they wanted like a third round pick
for a rental against I'm not I'm not bringing but
I'm saying that they probably had a better feel for
(01:35:28):
the mixing situation than they willing to tell us. Most
teams tend to hide injuries until they have to report them. Again,
I'm not even saying Joe Mixon was the is the obstacle?
Speaker 8 (01:35:38):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (01:35:38):
And three is you created in three? If you go
three and oh, there wouldn't have been an obstacle. In fact,
if you'd go on three and oh, you'd have been
never one seeing the AFC. Now they're eleven and five.
They overcame all five of their losses are by one score.
They created hurdles and they jumped over them. They were
Edmund Moses. Good for him them. I mean those losses
where the Buccaneers are still alive in the NFC South
(01:36:00):
Rams are Rams are one of the best teams in football.
And what was the third one? The Jaguars, who are
who have twelve wins? It suck. We don't believe in them.
They don't suck their average Okay you can if they
have twelve wins, that's pretty solid, that's pretty good. They
were down two scores the Colts too, and they destroyed
(01:36:20):
the Broncos on the road. Maybe we're just not giving
the Jacksonville Jaguars their flowers. Wow, we'll see you come
playoff time. And that's the beauty of the NFL playoffs.
If you want to hate, you can hate on every
single team, and you're gonna be right about every single
team except one. That's right all right. Up next, the
grandiose announcement of the D the Year candidates. Okay, and uh,
(01:36:42):
we will go to Scott, who wants to talk about
the Texans and the playoffs to get that two seven
one three two one two five seven ninety seven one
three two one two five seven honety, The D of
the Year candidates are up next. That's right right here
on seven ninety Oh, what a glorious it is in
the city of Houston. Too cold for me. Maybe that's
a different issue for a different time. You're a whiner,
(01:37:05):
I know, but I'm also the man that's here to
present to you the two thousand the class of twenty
twenty five D of the Year candidate D of the Year.
Voting will begin in a matter of moments. Rossi not
making the list on D of the Year, but was
under careful consideration. Chauncey Billups did that make D of
(01:37:28):
the Year?
Speaker 6 (01:37:30):
Why not?
Speaker 3 (01:37:31):
Just there's only spots for four. It's like a good
qualify by you know, there's always one left out that
people get all upset about. Chauncey Billups did not make
D of the Year, but was a close Damon. Jones
also did not make D of the Year. The four
candidates for D of the Year, three of which are
sports related, one or is not, in no particular order, Rossie.
(01:37:56):
Our first nominee for D of the Year is the
athletic director at Notre Dame Pete Bavaqua, bitching and moaning
about not being the playoffs, taking his team out of
the bulls, then holding a how long was it is
the Prince Conference still going out on Johnson right now?
I think it's still going a little bit. Man, You,
(01:38:18):
my friend, are definitely a D of the Year candidate.
Speaker 9 (01:38:23):
D of the Year.
Speaker 3 (01:38:25):
Our second nominee of the D of the Year. And
by the way, you can only vote through the Twitter
account and that'll be up in just a matter of
seconds at sports MT on the Twitter verse, the former
head coach at the University of Michigan, Charon Moore. Not
only was he having a little extracurricular affair, he was
dming OnlyFans girls wanted multiple three ways and four ways
(01:38:48):
with women in for tickets. Hey, what's wrong with that?
And when he got fired, he goes to the woman's
house and threatens to kill himself and her. Jeez, that's
a little much, you, Charon. Our IDEA of the Year
candidates G of the Year candidate number three in our
Last Sports one, he will be coaching the Louisiana State
(01:39:11):
University Tigers. The way he left, as he has done
with other cities and other colleges over the years, and
the way he has circumvented the media put him in
a three sixty move moving him around saying this, saying
that basically what was he Ryan Lion Ross about. There
(01:39:32):
was no communication between him and LSU. Uh huh, just everything.
He didn't look at the contract, didn't look at the contract,
didn't even say for the whole game for his LSU Tigers.
Everything about link Kevin just says, Dean, is it not?
I know somebody who's disagreeing. I know Gordon's vow No
(01:39:53):
they Kevin, Now you don't jem me yo know, can't.
I'm rolling ain't giving you no Lane Keff and you
are D of the Year candidates. M D of the
Year and our non D of the Year candidate is
actually two people in one we salute on sports nonsports
(01:40:17):
any idea, I don't know. We talked about it for
about a month on the show. Maybe give or tape
the cold Play couple. Oh okay, because one one D
they both got named these. Yeah, they one received and
(01:40:39):
one hugged it out until they got in the Jimbo
try at jul A Stadium. They are candidates for the
D of the Year D of the Years. So once
again your four finalists. Pete Bvakua Notre Dame Athletic director,
Sharon Moore at Michigan, Lane Kiff in the way he left,
(01:41:01):
the Coldplay couple. Which one of those four will be
D of the Year. I think it's a pretty easy
decision for me. Matthew, Yeah, you're you and Johnnick at
the votes. Let's go. Let's get you guys in name.
Pete Bavaqua is certainly up there. I mean, what a
d taking your ball and going home. The Coldplay couple,
(01:41:24):
we had a nickel for every ceo there was cheating
on his wife. We probably have a lot of nickels.
But they definitely shouldn't have been together at the Coldplay
concert getting caught. Yeah, I understand why they're in there.
Lane Kiffin. I mean, sure, he's a liar and he's
probably a bad person, but that comes with the territory
makes him a deal. It's gotta be Sharon more because
(01:41:46):
not only were you cheating. You're literally thirsting over dozens
of girls on Instagram. They're all airing out your dirty laundry.
You're offering tickets for foursomes, and then you put a
butter knife. Did you put a butter knife to your throat?
Talking about how you're gonna kill yourself for this girl?
All she did was tell the truth, Sharon Moore, You, sir,
(01:42:11):
are D of the year, D of the year. All right,
Jonathan to Floria yours? What are you going with?
Speaker 5 (01:42:16):
I don't know, man, I gotta stay with it. I
think my gut is the Coldplay couple. Man, I'm not
gonna lie as two families.
Speaker 3 (01:42:23):
He broke up.
Speaker 5 (01:42:24):
They were openly on the balcony and they didn't really
care when it got caught. They were just okay, like
no one can see what's gonna happen. Really ran away
a little bit more like, you know, the same way
you said if we had a nickel for every ceo,
she didn't. We had a nickel for every head coach
somebody else?
Speaker 3 (01:42:42):
Is true?
Speaker 2 (01:42:43):
You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (01:42:44):
Yeah, but didn't putting a knife to his throat. Butter
knife was a real knife. Well, I heard it was
butter knife. It was a butter knife, and then it
was kitchen scissors. Geez, yeah, like he's making pork cutlets.
You're putting batter on. I forget. It is going on
the road, all right, Hey, No, every vote counts, my friends,
Every vote counts.
Speaker 5 (01:43:05):
So far, Coldplay couple is winning.
Speaker 3 (01:43:07):
It's early, all right, I got my vote in. You did.
Let's take a look here at the old vote count.
All right, So so far we have eight votes in
Sharon war fifty, which means four. I figured that out.
You have, h math, The Coldplay couple is second, and
Bavakua and Kiffin are tied for third. You have twenty
(01:43:28):
five hours to vote. Make your vote count. Retweet this.
Let's get a nice survey going, a good sample size
of who and D is the twenty twenty five D
of the year? D of the year? And I believe
what D of the year? Last year was Jim's loastn angle? Correct?
H Yeah, it's and the year and then the year
(01:43:50):
before that it was Amy crunk drunk?
Speaker 6 (01:43:53):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (01:43:53):
Is that true?
Speaker 2 (01:43:53):
You know?
Speaker 3 (01:43:54):
I forget. We got to get these plaques up on
the wall.
Speaker 2 (01:43:57):
We do.
Speaker 3 (01:44:00):
I think this is a really tough class year. I
think it's easy. Well, you guys out there threatening lives,
it's a little much. What a butter knife though, that's true,
that makes it he probably makes it worse. What are
you doing, Sharon? Come on now? All right, So again,
if you would like to vote for a D of
the Year, let your voice be heard at sports Empty
(01:44:22):
as my Twitter account, And we have until about one
thirty tomorrow before we announce who the Day of the
Year is. Peepav Aqua, Sharon Moore, Lane Kiffin, the Coldplay couple,
Lane Kevin making a little bit of a charge here
in the last few minutes, and that was the day
of the years.
Speaker 9 (01:44:43):
D of the Year.
Speaker 3 (01:44:47):
I think I missed anybody again. You could go Chauncey Phillips,
you can go Damon Jones, you can go anybody that's
been cheating on sports and gambling. There's a lot of Yeah,
he's like he's like a he's like a Tuesday for him. Yeah.
I was gonna say, that's that's normal D active attitude there.
Uh okay, uh. The best of Believer or not today?
(01:45:10):
Is that one fifty? Looking forward to that. Ten of
our best questions are Ross's Best Questions of the Year.
Will be giving those away. We've got a quick time out.
We'll talk to Roger and Scott we come back. Our
time is twelve forty two seven one three two one
two five seven ninety seven one three two, one two
five seven, twelve forty two Here on Sports Talk seven
ninety Let's talk to the great people of Houston, Texas.
(01:45:31):
Twelve forty six. It is a Matt Thomas show with
Ross Early. Happy New Year. By the way, the ruling
is usually you have any day from New Year's Day
to three weeks after to wish happy New Year. I
have consistently gone into mid February to late March, and
I'm gonna continue to do that just to kind of
(01:45:52):
buck the trend. Why because I just want to shake
things up a little bit. Okay, Yeah, it's not off
of here. In May nineth Happy New Year. Plenty left
in the year, seven plus months to say. It's not
a new year though, Happy Year, Happy time, Yes, season
one seasons, Greetings, Scott, I remember Oaks on the seven
(01:46:12):
ONTI Hello, Scott.
Speaker 13 (01:46:14):
Matt Ross is going on guys, Happy holidays.
Speaker 11 (01:46:16):
Happy.
Speaker 13 (01:46:18):
I enjoyed y'all's d of the year conversation. You don't
have to ask me who my vote is for. Of
course it's for for Lane Kiffin, but you know, uh,
he one day will probably should be up for a
Lifetime Achievement Award for D the D of the Year
for all of his uh career career arcing moves. But
(01:46:39):
it's it's kind of you know, when you look at
the list you just put together in all seriousness, is
actually kind of a sad state of affairs that three
out of the four people on the list are multi
are paid multi millions of dollars of years to be
leaders for colleged age student athletes at that level. And
you know, that's the type of behavior that they if
(01:47:00):
they find themselves in in that sport all the time,
which is really a sad thing altogether. But I called
to talk about the Texans a little bit and wanted
to just kind of share my thoughts looking forward to
the playoffs. I know there's Ross. I saw I follow
you on Instagram, Ross, and I saw you'd posted like
a class half full, class half empty thing where he
talked about you know, yeah we won eight in a row.
(01:47:21):
One way to look at it. The other way to
look at it is our offense isn't very good, and
it's kind of true. I mean, I think there is
two ways to look at it going forward. I think
this team is very capable of making the super Bowl
with the way the landscape of the AFC is set
up right now. However, we I think it's important that
(01:47:42):
we're clear on how it is we're going to get there.
This offense is not capable of fighting. But if there's
any slip up of all in the playoffs from our defense,
for example, if we face Josh Allen again and he
finds a way to put up four touchdowns on our defense,
I don't think our offense is of responding. So the
(01:48:02):
way I look at it, I mean, our defense has
been so spectacular it's almost like they're in the fifth
inning where they maybe just completed the fifth inning of
a no hitter right now, and it's a one to
nothing game, and we have four innings to go to
get the game to ultimately reach where we want to go.
I don't think our offense is capable of getting there.
(01:48:23):
I think they've proven who they are to this point.
And the last thing I'll say on it too long term,
you know, I think the tech look we're having a
great season. We're a great team. I don't want this
isn't where the time to focus on this maybe, but man, like,
are we really going to have to pay stra out
a whole bunch of money? I mean, you know, I
know he's a solid quarterback, but yesterday was the first
(01:48:44):
time where I watched the game, even though he's been
the worst quarterback on the field before, where I was like,
this guy's not on the same level as Justin Herbert.
I mean, there really isn't wasn't a close comparison between
the two players. But like I said to recap it,
I mean, I think our defense is capable of carrying
to the super Bowl. But that is the way we're going.
Speaker 6 (01:49:02):
To have to win.
Speaker 7 (01:49:02):
Our defense.
Speaker 3 (01:49:03):
You don't have to carry us, Scott. Great thoughts. Remember,
don't forget to follow Instagram at supports MT you don't
forget that one. Let's go Scott and blocks. Great call,
except for that one part you didn't mention mine Camp.
But thank you. If somebody who's already you don't have
to you're fine, thank you, Scott. I mean, Ross, you
(01:49:23):
and I have kind of gone back and forth. I
generally agree with what you've said about paying Stroud, But
there there's natural hesitation.
Speaker 11 (01:49:31):
I get it.
Speaker 3 (01:49:32):
There's just not saying some no doubt about it, kid,
miss Hall of Famer, I'm not saying that. And people
are a little concerned because in the right world, which
the Texans still living, you can pay Will Anderson top
value in CJ. Stroup, but something would have to suffer.
What would that be? We don't know. We're not doing
we're not constructing the roster. We're not figuring out what
(01:49:54):
the priorities are. What can you live with on the
offensive line? What can you live with in the linebacking corps?
What can you live with with paying a second and
third receiver? If you're going to pay two of the
two of the top three picks right what their fair
market value is, that's a lot for one team to
have to go through to live with. Yeah, I think,
I mean, we'll see. They don't have to do anything immediately.
(01:50:20):
I don't think with either of them. Stroud has another year,
but you would assume that both of them are going
to need to be paid around the same want to Yeah,
you don't want to holdout situation. I understand that, And
I mean daneil Hunter is making big money you pay
Jalen Petrie. Nico Collins is on a good deal, but
it's a team friendly deal for what his value is.
Is he going to want more money? And that's just
the way it goes. That's why the NFL is the
(01:50:42):
window closes immediately. Ask the Kansas City Chiefs how that
windows looking for them right now? I mean things. Ask
the Detroit Lions how their windows looking right now? So
you have to strike while the iron is hot. And
unfortunately it's hard to get everything going at the same time.
That's why it's so hard and that's why there's so
much parody in the end. So, yes, the defense is great,
(01:51:04):
and you do have Hunter and Anderson right now, and
Stingley playing well, and Kamari Lasster is on a Rooie deal.
He's gonna want some money eventually, so you have to
take advantage. And this offense needs to be good enough.
But they've got no run game and the offensive line
is in shambles. So and I think all of that
goes hand in hand. Yes, CJ. Stroud struggling. Would he
be better with a perfect offensive line and a great
(01:51:25):
running game, Absolutely, But he's got to overcome of those
two interceptions. He threw one was a tip. Yes, one
was just a port. He was completely lost in where
the defense was as far as his zone they were in.
And I believe every interception he's thrown this year has
been when the opposing defense has been in zone. So
(01:51:49):
that's that's something that he's been struggling with all year long,
and that's on tape. That is something that every team
has kind of taken advantage of. A good phone call there.
Let's go remember follow me on Instagram at sports and ye.
If you did not give your lady a special gift
this year, tell her it's a free gift. Follow me
on Instagram at sports empt you're asking people for their
(01:52:10):
woman to follow you on Instagram, Yes, or for that matter,
you make it a family affair, how the entire family do.
It's a family package. It's all free, you know, follow
sports MT. Thank you, it'll make him happy. Roger, you're
on seven ninety at twelve fifty three, Hillo, Roger, Yeah,
good need.
Speaker 11 (01:52:25):
Good afternoon, gentlemen. Yeah, I thought the comment off that
off that take. Definitely the Michigan coach. For sure. I'll
get my pitch. Also, yesterday's game, you know I didn't
I forgot that Shodd even had that still in his
bag with that long the long passes. The last time
we saw that was what the Cleveland game, the playoff
game with Blocko when he threw one of Nico Collins.
(01:52:48):
Think of the last time I saw that. So, yeah,
they start off fast and then they just fizzled down
your stretch and then you know, that's a good thing.
We brought to talk about d of the Year because
strong looks like he's got a little d uh inside
him as well as far as attitude. Hey hey, hey,
e one's attitude. The proximate breath of comments on the
(01:53:13):
on the interview, on the postgame interview, uh, not necessarily
undirectly speaking to off coordinator. You know what, keep the
gas on, keep the gas on, and blah blah blah.
But you know, if you're gonna we're gonna pay it
with strokes like that, you need to prepare with a
broad stroke of faith brush and put yourself included and
(01:53:34):
then own up to your own any gat quis during
that same interview that way, and you're not you know,
leaving this you know this this uh, this question of
why is he you know, talking to negative about with
the OC when he just pretty pretty much had the
other one fired as well. You know, you don't need
that kind of negative going into a playoff where when
(01:53:54):
he was pretty good and you've got a historical defense,
you just kind of like you need to not not
do that. And I'm hoping that if if Delico can
see that, you know, just kind of like you know,
knit that in the bud. Yeah, and on the other end,
that'll be Osha. I'm like, hey, he's gonna rip me
like that, and I'm gonna rip his ass on the
film study and tell him what the hell was that
going into assund with that crazy throw. So yeah, it
(01:54:17):
can be tear for tab but really stuff that we
don't need to be having during this time, this point
of the season moving forward. And so the Rockets, yeah,
they they kind of talked me off the ledge of
those two nice wins man, you know, ripped on the Rocks.
They're gonna have my rock step.
Speaker 3 (01:54:31):
Thanks Roger for the PHOC call. Thank you buddy. Having
a good happy New Year.
Speaker 9 (01:54:35):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:54:36):
Dan played this on It's CJ one Boys, if you
want to play this here. Dan thought there was a
little bit of shade thrown. I didn't see it that
hear it that way. I haven't heard this. So here
is CJ talking about keeping the foot on the gas
pedal at all times.
Speaker 14 (01:54:52):
They're playing too hot shale. You know, they're trying to,
you know, take away your best guard. So we kind
of knew that, and you know, came up with some
good plays and designed some good plays just to pick
on that. And you know, got to just keep that going.
You know, it can't just be in the first quarter.
You know, I got to be throughout the whole game.
So then something we can learn from is, you know,
it was just keeping the gas on and making sure
you know, we're still calling it. I'm taking care of
the ball and you know we're moving forward.
Speaker 3 (01:55:14):
Okay, I was gonna say no, but you change your mind.
Then he said calling it right at the end there
at the end, at the end, he says he's gonna
keep calling it.
Speaker 14 (01:55:25):
Didn't he say that they're playing too hot shale. You know,
they're trying to, you know, take away your best guy.
So we kind of knew that, and you know, came
up with some good plays and designed some good plays
just to pick on that, and you know, we gotta
keep that going.
Speaker 2 (01:55:37):
You know.
Speaker 14 (01:55:37):
It can't just be in the first quarter, you know,
I gotta be throughout the whole game. So then something
we can learn from is, you know, it was just
keeping the gas on and making sure you know we're
still calling it. I'm taking care of the ball and
you know We're moving forward.
Speaker 3 (01:55:48):
Is that what he says, we're still calling it? Does
he say that again? Nothing that my interpretation is better
or worse than yours. I don't it as that. I'm
telling you, it's it all sounds very good QB speak.
We got to keep the foot on the gas until
he does he say. I think he says, we gotta
(01:56:09):
keep on. He says calling. I think he's talking about
as a team on the play, he's gonna keep calling
him aggressive. Please hmm.
Speaker 5 (01:56:18):
Can't just be in the first quarter.
Speaker 3 (01:56:19):
The beard scratcher. Oh I got shaved the other day,
so I'm not scratching as much. Okay, I don't know.
Maybe I'm a naive. To me, I thought when it
calling meaning coaching staff, us getting out there and doing it.
I don't. I don't take it as well. I wish
(01:56:40):
we just we put that back in our in our back.
We don't use that club again, I you know, I
don't know, maybe I'm wrong. I mean Dan clearly thought
of it. And if you and Dan think the same way,
that's all for you. That's good for you. As again,
I looked at every drive after the first two touchdowns.
The first drive was a four four yard pass. Literally
every drive afterwards was a first down run, run, run, run, run, run,
(01:57:07):
run run. Now is that Nick Kayley? Is that Demiko Ryans?
I don't know. Yeah, by about that could not that
could be shaded towards the head coach, not necessarily the
offense coach. Yeah, absolutely, yeah, because I do think, like
as I said, I was listening to the to the
radio broadcast and then they were interviewing to Miko, and
he's like, we got to run the ball. We got
to run the ball. Short passing game, run the ball,
short passing game. That's what they did after the first
(01:57:28):
few touchdowns. Okay, I think that's Demiko's s. I don't
think it's a direct arrow shot at the heart of
Nick Keley. I think it's more of a team philosophy
of if it works in the first we got to
keep things moving in the second half. Demiko Ryans literally
went from the straight from the defensive head coach, playbook defense,
run the ball, short passing game, take care of the ball.
(01:57:51):
All right, final hour of the Matt Thomas, jol Ross
coming up. We'll talk to Keith, we'll talk to the
rest of you at seven one three two one two
five seven. Honey. We'll also give you up to on
what's going on on the the year of voting, which,
by the way, Ross, you made an effective pitch because
Sharon Moore is out to a healthy start here. He's
got my vote. He does have your vote. Seven one
(01:58:12):
three two one two five seven ninety seven one three
two one two five seven ninety twelve fifty nine. Here
on Sports Talk seven ninety is the Matt Thomas Show
with Ross. Matt and Ross with you for the final
hour today. This is your last hour of the calendar year. Ross,
(01:58:33):
I'll be in tomorrow. Brian Hollin's gonna hang out with
us between ten and twelve tomorrow. I don't know what
else we're doing the rest of the time. This is
our last, believe it or not, of the year too,
because it is the best off. Yes, I am sifting through.
We're into March and we will can keep on marching.
Towards December. Okay, you got forty five minutes or so. Yeay,
(01:58:56):
I got about six questions and I with the six
candidate and these are really juicy good questions. Yes, okay,
very good. Uh, if you've not heard a half an
hour ago, we announced our candidates for D of the Year,
that's right. Why did we do Florida? Why do we
do Florida Gators basketball in April eighth sports rv D
(01:59:19):
of the Year. You're a freshman member Jonathan play anytime
he brings up Florida basketball calling the g through the
list here I said I was into April. Oh, I
just does something happen Latigators basketball? Okay, I'll shut up.
(01:59:39):
Mayor shaving cream be full of fire, red ants, red fire.
I mean, I guess I clean up the edges. But
I got I go get a beard chafe. The straight
razors nass So I was gonna get me a straight
razor in LA. You didn't know this, you were going?
We worked, did we? It's one hundred and thirty five dollars.
Do you think a reasonable prices for a beard trim
(01:59:59):
straight razor in hotel? I don't get a straight razor
in Kingwood but I get a super shiver. You know,
that's the that's the you know fact at the factory.
It's the industrial use huh, industrial for what you know,
like shaving professional professional barbers. Okay, and they and they
do it, and I pay forty two dollars. Okay, it's
(02:00:20):
really really right, minds forty Yeah, and I tip on that,
so that's good. Yeah. If I go to Ruper Ruts,
it's about fifty dollars what yeah, and then yeah, fifty
to fifty five the West time at Ruper Ruts just
to shave your head and beard fifty five and then
they and they so American. I said, do you have
(02:00:41):
the super shiver? Goes Yeah, that's an additional three dollars.
Wait a minute, you're gonna it's gonna do a better
job for you faster, and you're gonna charge me extra
for it. That's insane. So I don't go to Ruber
Ruts anymore. I seeing my guys over here. I got
two barbers in Kingwood that I used shout out to
Kingwo barber Shop and Kingwo Barber Shopping for three. I
believe they're called Oh wow, Kelly, they come over that
(02:01:02):
one Kelly Candace a family operation, Kelly Candace, and we're
gonna go with Brent. Shout out to all three of
those folks that do it. But yeah, I wanted to
get one done at the hotels one hundred and thirty
five dollars, not including tip. If you give twenty hour tip,
that's another twenty seven so that's one hundred and fifty. No,
(02:01:23):
I was like I, so I went and got a
razor at the grocery, at the grocer and just shade
to myself one great, all right, that's enough for that. Okay, sorry,
but I didn't mean to bring up beard habits, but
you did well, I mean I brought it up. Okay,
here we go, do you hear, Canadas? You have twenty
four hours left to go on this.
Speaker 9 (02:01:41):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (02:01:41):
Pete Levaqua Notre Dame, methotic director Sharon Moore, the former
Michigan coach, laying Kiffin the way he left Ole Miss
and the Coldplay couple in fourth place. Pete Bavaqua the
ady at lsu at at Notre Dame thirteen percent in
second and third place, the Coldplay up at fifteen percent,
(02:02:02):
laying Kiffins in third place at eighteen percent, and Sharon Moore,
the Michigan former Michigan coach who DMed OnlyFans girls, DMed
Instagram girls. Yes, had some good times with a football
operations girl and then when she threw him under the
bus or said hey, here's going on, he went to
her house and tried to kill her. That camp that's
(02:02:24):
coming in at fifty four allegedly fifty four percent, that
feels like to me, that's going to be a nice
runaway winner there. Sam says, can we do a D
of the decade? Well, we've got about four more years
of that before we go. Who's the D of the
decade right now? D of the decade? That would have
(02:02:45):
to go back and look at the other d d's
of the year to figure that out. I don't know.
I can't think of anything worth the toime. I'm sure
we'd have plenty of candidates, okay, but I can't think
of one here all right? Seven to one to three
two one two five seven ninety seven one three two
one two five seven ninety. Keith is with us at
one o eight on seven ninety Keith, Good afternoon to.
Speaker 6 (02:03:07):
You, happy holadays, How are y'all great?
Speaker 3 (02:03:11):
Thank you for saying that back to you, my friend.
Speaker 6 (02:03:14):
So before the year started out, I thought the Ravens
had the best team in football. Now don't know, they
had a whole bunch of injuries back and forth. Yes,
they think Lamar is faking his injury this time and
he's thinking about actually getting rid of him. But if
all this being said with the CFT folks, if he
(02:03:36):
comes back and is healthy, I can see the Ravens
group running the table. And I can also see one
and done for the Texans if they have to play
the Ravens. That's just my oppinion.
Speaker 3 (02:03:50):
He Lamar Jackson is tough, but he has been. I
mean he's had ankle, knee, back injuries and more. Zay
Flowers gonna be more involved. I saw that. But also
Save Flowers can drop a pass. I can fumble with
the best of him too. What did Derrick Henry do Sunday?
Four touchdowns? Something crazy?
Speaker 6 (02:04:06):
Like?
Speaker 1 (02:04:07):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (02:04:07):
It was whatever. He was like, he was twenty six
years old. Again, he's a league That's a league winning
performance right there. Fantasy football? Yeah, can I tell you
that Derrick Henry maybe one of the greatest. He is
one of the greatest running backs of all time already,
But I even think he's even a little undersold how
great he is.
Speaker 2 (02:04:25):
Was this right?
Speaker 3 (02:04:25):
Two udred and sixteen yards and fourth, twenty six year
old Derrick Henry Wow, mm hmm? Anything else?
Speaker 6 (02:04:33):
Keith, Yeah, yeah, yeah. I would you say about it?
Ann Rodgers yesterday that dude don't have anybody to throw
throw the ball to. That you know, the dude that
slapped uh some fan, he out of it. He got
kicked out of out of the game for the next
two games. So I watched yesterday. He don't have anybody
(02:04:56):
to throw the ball to. So there's no way they're
going to beat the Ravens.
Speaker 3 (02:05:00):
That's what I said. I think the Ravens will go
to Pittsburgh gonna win. I really do. The only way
they do it is if Lamar Jackson is hurt or
gets into one of his ruts. Thanks Keith of Phone Caver,
he throws multiple interceptions. Derrick Henry tenth on the all
time leading rushing list, ahead of Dorset, Jim Brown, Marshall, Fawk, Edrin,
James Mark Sallen, Emitt Smith, Derrick Henry, Derrick Henry, what's up,
(02:05:27):
I'm not many Cowboys fans? All right, let me take
a Cowboy fans. I hate you, I mean, I do
hate you, but I don't hate that selection. I would
if I need four yards, I'm giving the ball to
Derrick Henry over Emmitt Smith. Emmitt Smith may maybe now
he's a Hall of Famer. Yeah, he's the greatest of
all time. You must give him as flowers for that.
(02:05:47):
But of the all time record holders we're talking about points, score, touchdowns,
thrown wins in baseball, batting average, home run, he's the
least sexiest all time of the all time. Does that
make sense? I would agree? Do you want to you
wanted to have a little fun, go, let's go after
Immit's okay? First of all? The well, we'll go through
the list, all right, Emmitt Smith or and while I'll
(02:06:08):
just keep going, Walter Payton, Peyton, Frank Gore, Emmitt Smith.
I agree. I think Barry Sanders, Barry Sanders, Adrian Peterson. Oh,
it's no debate for me. That's made wow prime. Ad
(02:06:31):
was so hard to bring down. But he was hurt
a lot. He had two thousand, he had fifteen thousand yards.
He wasn't hurt that much. I'm going Peterson, that's not
even close for me. Okay, I'll go eight as well.
Curtis Martin eighty is all day, by the way, Uh,
Emitt Smith, I agree, Ladinian, Tomlinson, oh Lt Yeah, Lt Yeah, Lt.
(02:06:58):
Jerome Metas, Emmon Smith, I agree, and you and I agree.
Way to Dickerson, Emmit Smith, and then Derrick Henry is tenth. Yeah.
I would take Derek really over Dickerson. Now, I just
didn't see Dickerson in as nothing for two thousand rushers
and so o J. Simpson boy Dickerson was oh man
(02:07:19):
a good career both two different places. I want to say.
Emmitt Smith still had a thousand yard season with the
car Cardinals. See really, well that wasn't get it wasn't
as hard to get used to get six thousand yards anymore. No, yeah,
I just I would still take Actually, he's nine hundred
and thirty seven yards three five of carry. I would
take Emmitt Smith fifty one to forty man over Dickerson.
Emmitt Smith only had one season over five yards of carry?
Speaker 5 (02:07:43):
What about I don't know if you guys said, is
Marshall Lynz was that?
Speaker 3 (02:07:46):
Was he that good? Or was he just not long enough? Okay,
not long enough? Hmmm yeah, Dickerson never had any season
over five years. Carry interesting, okay, and just to do
three four more and we'll go, oh oh, well, I
got the I went off the list. Hold that's all right, Okay,
we'll take a short time out. We'll think about these things.
But Dorset was U was next? Emmitt Smith really over Dorset? Yeah, okay.
(02:08:12):
And Jim Brown, I mean Jim Brown. Jim Brown retired
so early, Marshall falk Edrin, James Marcus Allen, Emmitt Smith,
Emitt Smith, Edmitt Smith. So he's not being something. He's
being some of them. He's not being out. Yeah, he's
top tennis. But I mean, I think I go to
my argument of of you're the number one of something,
he's the least attractive number one of that number one group.
(02:08:35):
I think the most anonymous guy in the top twenty,
he's got to be Stephen Jackson, yes, or Fred Taylor
wy me Stephen Jackson though, Stephen Jackson, Yeah, all right?
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety seven
one three two one two five seven iety the best
of Believe or Not. Thirty five minutes from now, Vince
wants to talk about Stroud Combo. Is it give him
(02:08:57):
his money is it Wait and see how the playoffs go,
because here's the reality. Ross And I'll say this real quick.
If the Texans lose a playoff game, who's gonna who?
Who will who will handle the most for the blame
of that. I don't think i'd been the defense. I well,
(02:09:17):
the term for the defense on an off day, well,
that ever really come into conversation because we keep waiting
for them to off day and they don't have any
I guess against Jaguars they gave up twenty nine. Yeah,
and the Raiders they allowed Jenny to go off a
little bit, but that was still still really good to me.
Games over, they had yep one fourteen. On Sports Talk
seven ninety seven one three two one two five seven Etti,
(02:09:39):
A lot of people have been asking about my fantasy championship.
I'm gonna fall and finish in second place tonight unless
Bejon Robinson gets hurt, Rossie, I wouldn't ask for an
injury for any player, especially a fine University of Texas product,
but that seems rude. He's a full go So I
am down three point one four. I have Mayvas the kicker,
(02:10:02):
Harrison Mavis for the Rams going and he scores a
bunch of points. So I mean the Rams score thirty
five points is gonna get either I got you paid
for about ten percent chance the kicker could go off,
and bijon bijeon bijon vision both are correct nowadays, apparently. Yeah,
uh so, the ESPN forecaster says, I'm going to finish,
(02:10:24):
I've got I'm only got a seven percent chance of winning,
So you actually give me a little more hope than
the ESPN or TRV caster's got you a ten percent.
I'm always a bridesmaid whenever the bride. I'm glad, aren't
you glad? You came back? Win some cash? Yeah, I've
got some money, you get a pro profit. Yeah it's okay. Yeah,
but I want the championship because I could finally end
(02:10:45):
this drought. Wow, you were like the Buffalo Bills in
the league, except they made it to the Super Bowl.
More you're more like the Chargers. Wait wait wait wait
wait wait wait oh how many Super Bowl wins? They
try to explain, Come on, charge by the way Chargers,
Jonathan explain what you're a kicker? Look, I don't know.
(02:11:07):
He missed one kick and an extra point and one
extra point it's okay, it's okay. They're still eleven to
five extra points not a sure thing, not at this
distance anymore. In college they are, but not in the
pro certainly not in wet conditions in Buffalo. Mm hmmm.
Momentum was on one side, it would have carried over
(02:11:28):
to the overtime. How does the momentum carry in the
overtime but doesn't carry over to a two point version
because momentum is more macro than micro. Okay, making whatever
rules you're making up again. If Michael Straighthan Howie Long,
and Rob Gronkowski want to be on my side, I'm
all for that. You got Terry Bridsch on your side.
Rob Gronkowski, don't you run respect and at a fourth
(02:11:53):
grade level? Okay, let's go throw. I'm tossing that one out. Okay.
Terry Bradshaw uses of blunder and to eat his food.
You want to go with that. One's got to read
the instructions on the blender, doesn't he You know, there's
no there's no chance he reads those that You're not
gonna be here. Oh yeah, sorry, as I go through me, yeah,
(02:12:14):
from what I don't know. We will resume every segment
in a week from Friday. You know, shut your bomb.
We can't do shut your by myself. No, we're gonna
well those are those day in the days that need
to be said. So uh, we got gut feelings. We'll
do those tomorrow twelve thirty jenthn By the way, our
finally gut feelings because we got Ryan Hollands going to
join us from ten the wonderful. Yeah, he's coming in.
I'm sure it'll be great. Not coming in, it'll be
(02:12:34):
on the comeracks. Oh, he doesn't like to drive, so
I mean he can get a driver. We can get cracked.
I think Craig Drives will have a pieon situation. I
think it's good. Yeah, it looks a nice house. And
I won't say where he lives, but it looks a
nice house. I think the money from the rockets is
pretty good. But yes, but yeah, he doesn't he's not
a big got a big food budget though, Oh my god,
(02:12:56):
he eats so much food. I'm he We went to
Haibachi we were in Denver last week. Extra shrimp fried rice,
which I don't know you'll be buying. Whoa, uh, extra soup,
extra salad, did not get dessert this time. How does
he do it? Good for him? He's probably was the
average person of Colora can take it a year in
(02:13:18):
a day. I think two thousand is recommended by the FDA.
I would say that Ryan's closer to five.
Speaker 11 (02:13:24):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (02:13:24):
But he works out all the time. Have you ever
seen my television? Yeah, wearing nice zoot suits and games
and stuff, top hat and cane He's not wearing top
hats or canes. Matt, that's me. You see my You
see my New Year's Eve? Garb Vince on seven at
one twenty five high.
Speaker 7 (02:13:41):
Vince personal and more is definitely the of the year.
So hands down, I call him about Stroud and I've
been kind of thinking this all year, and I said,
let me calling that, you know, dog him out. But
I'm now where after watching last night's game, yesterday's game,
(02:14:03):
the contract the first half, in the second half, so
the first couple of series, he had time to throw
the ball. He looks like a superstar most quarters, even
average quarterbacks. If you give me time to throw the
gonna they're gonna make throwers. The second half he started
getting pressured. He goes back to the skittish ways, happy
see going off the back of his food. His pocket
(02:14:25):
presence is horrible. And I've watched these other quarterbacks on
these other teams, and they make plays, you know. And
I think the bottom line with Straud is he plays
very scared. And I don't blame him one bit. He's
had two concussions. You've seen his death buddy, get his
legs mangled last year, and he just plays scared. And
(02:14:50):
I don't think to pay.
Speaker 11 (02:14:54):
Here's why.
Speaker 7 (02:14:54):
Here's why I think he plays scared. You just see
me in his humorous body language.
Speaker 3 (02:14:59):
He scared out there.
Speaker 7 (02:15:02):
No, yes, his body lunguage shows to be scared. And
it's just even the slightest amount of pressure, he panics.
He doesn't know what to do a lot of times
field he sees the rush coming first of all, press.
Speaker 3 (02:15:16):
That second touchdown that he threw is there was a
rusher in his face and then he threw a strike
fifty yards down the field.
Speaker 7 (02:15:24):
I understand what you're saying. I know you're sticking up
on in the way, but no, no.
Speaker 3 (02:15:27):
No, no, no time about sticking up answered. I mean
to counter my point if you dare.
Speaker 7 (02:15:33):
No, no, no, that's that's that's an aberration there. I
don't think they he he's there all the time. I
just I just see.
Speaker 3 (02:15:41):
I mean, there are there are adverbs you can use.
I don't know if scared the one I would use.
I don't think C. J. Straw has been playing football.
You can get happy feet at times. Yeah, but that's
every quarterback there is there and I don't think it's
been as bad or pronounced in the last several weeks.
The offensive line is not great, Vinza, I think all
of us can agree on that. But it's it's getting
(02:16:02):
sick now, it's getting better. It's not not only it's
probably average. And right now a lot of average. There's
a lot of average offensive line in the NFL. They're
just aren't bottom line? Do you pay them?
Speaker 7 (02:16:13):
I mean, if he's a team playing this way, you
know it's it's same year. He was just kind of
like first year. He was going tossing to the wind.
He didn't really realize what's going on. Than another first
concussion comes, and then the second concussion comes. Like I said,
and best buddy got his leg mangled. And I played
football in high Stree and I w was a good athlete.
That was the one sport that I was scared and
(02:16:35):
I played football. I was scared because I love playing
the other sports way better. I did not want to
get hurt, and so I can tell that he's scared.
That's just my opinion.
Speaker 3 (02:16:44):
I may be wrong with Okay, thanks, h Yeah, I don't.
I don't think I would use the term scared. I
think that's uh. Is there trepidation? Is there uncertainty? Well,
that's what every NFL quarterback. Every NFL quarterback can't sit
in the pocket, put his heels down and go. I
can look look around for five or ten seconds to
find my receivers. I mean teams blitz sometimes offensive line
(02:17:04):
and miss their assignments, and sometimes the quarterback does not
read the ball properly, read the routes properly, miners of
combination of things. I think it's and I think there
are two sides to the story. I mean, two things
are true. That he has no running game. I mean,
Woodie Mark is averaging like three point five yards of
carry this season or something like that. And he's and
(02:17:25):
he's got a bad offensive line. Now, there are quarterbacks
who can overcome one or both of those. He's just
not that good. I mean, I think, of course he's
not in pat Mahomes doesn't have his resume or anything
like that. Pat Mahomes having a bad year. They had
no running game in the offensive line was a mess,
and then he took and then he got hurt and
Tori did he tear his acl. I forget whatever it
was for Pat Mahomes.
Speaker 11 (02:17:48):
It's just.
Speaker 3 (02:17:51):
You wish he was a top five, elite guy who
could overcome those things, as we always point to like
Joe Burrow and stuff like that. What you're doing is,
and I'm talking about just last call event, some tilling anybody.
What you're trying to do is you're trying to put
him in the top ten and he doesn't deserve to
be in the time five. I think he's fringe top ten.
Speaker 5 (02:18:07):
But would you say timid maybe's a better word to use.
Speaker 3 (02:18:10):
I don't think he's timid. I'd really don't that the
whole time that Vince no. I think sometimes decision making
just isn't great. Can we say that?
Speaker 2 (02:18:17):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (02:18:17):
I think he I think any struggle he's been struggling
all season against his own defenses as well. Okay, you're
going if I say he's outside of the top ten,
that's just me. That's like eleven or twelve.
Speaker 7 (02:18:30):
C J.
Speaker 3 (02:18:31):
Stroud because of who he plays for on a rookie contract,
is not gonna be paid like a top twelve. He's
gonna be paid like a top three. And that's where
the that's where the apprehension is going to come into
play the day Ross when he signs his mega extension.
Whenever that is, you're going to have people that are
going to be questioning the organization for it. But the
organization not because of the Texans trying to give out
(02:18:52):
money left and right. It's because the NFL plays his
position like that, you have a decent quarterback, you draft him,
you have to pay them as long as they're decent.
Quarterbacks get paid well above market, not market back, well
above their true value. And that's going to be very
hard for us to swallow, but we're gonna have to
(02:19:12):
do it because the alternative is you're not saying Davis
Mills the answer. And if you want to go take
this team that has got a defense that's ready to
win a championship and put in a rookie quarterback who
you're uncertain about who's going to be in here in
three let's say you go for a rookie quarterback in
two years. Do you want to go through this process
(02:19:34):
all over again. I don't think you do. That's the
thing is you have to think about. And that's one
of the reasons these quarterbacks who aren't very good do
get paid because you say, you know, if we build
enough around him, you can't have our guy. Otherwise, what
is what is the alternative? Right now? The alternative is
doing what the Seahawks did trading for Sam Darnold. Yeah,
(02:19:56):
the alternative is what the did or Sam Donald was
a free agent right or any it doesn't matter, Okay,
acquiring I should say the trus like acquiring Sam Donald?
You take your who's that guy? Mac Jones? Maybe? Like
who would you gotta have? Mack Jones or c J.
Stroud Right now? I wou'd rather have c J. Stroud, Cay.
(02:20:19):
I'm trying to think of other like good backups or
guys who who need another chain. Now there is a
quarterback out there they browning, No, Nope, yeah, think about it.
Name a quarterback who's ready to take over his team.
Mac Jones would be the only one I could think of.
Trey Lance has shown some flashes. I will I know
(02:20:41):
you're not a Milik Willis guy, he just had a
good game for the back. That's what I'm saying. This
is what you're gonna have to do, because if you're
saying c. J. Stroud's not the guy, you have to
tell me who the guy is. So you're gonna go
draft and wait three years or to where you're gonna get.
You're gonna pick aware in the twenties, late twenties. Right
now you're not getting. I mean, in theory, you could
get lucky, but right now you'n't have to trade way up.
That's why the quarterback pay system is broken. It just is.
(02:21:04):
Now are they the most important player? Yes, she can't
be competent the most by far, but but it does
crush your salary cap if you're trying to build a team.
It just does, especially when you Will Anderson was picking
the same draft. Who's gonna want cop money for his position?
One thirty two one Sports Talk seven ninety All right,
so you want some backups? Huh? You want non ce Joe? Now,
(02:21:26):
remember I am in that camp of scared the death
about the big money. Yeah I am, I am. I
understand what I'm saying. You're the alternative, your next tier
would be your Jacoby Brissett's You're Kyler Murray's. A person
on instagram S had my message Kyler m Baker Mayfield
when he's done in twenty twenty seven with the Bucks,
it'd be a free agent, not a franchise tag him. Okay,
(02:21:51):
that's they're letting him go. How good is he? The
reason is he's having a he's backsliding this year. The
Dallas Cowboys have had terrible salary cap problems ever since
Dak signed his deal. Yes, will we be wiggling around
like the Dallas Cowboys have wiggled around the last handful
of years Morrison's gone. They've also lest some other people
(02:22:14):
go over the last few years, and they put a
lot of money in to Ceedee Lamb's contract. So that's
your second big payment, Nico Collins. Is not your second
big payment, Will Adders. It will be your second big
payment Ultimately. That's something people are worried about, is that.
And again you shouldn't worry about this. You should wear
with the en results. But we're just talking about just
big picture here. Big picture is if CJ takes up
(02:22:34):
a lot of your money like Dak Prescott takes up
a lot of the money that Dallas Cowboys. Something suffers.
And if you've been a Cowboys supporter or follo over
the last couple of years, it's been their atrocious defense,
which hasn't gotten any better, and they sent their best
player to Green Bay.
Speaker 6 (02:22:47):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (02:22:47):
I'm just kind of looking at guys that are making big.
Herbert's making big money for the Chargers. You have to
make big money that Herd. He's making big money. Yep.
Jalen Hurts is making big money for the reigning Super
Bowl chainampion Eagles. Mahomes is making big money. But you
know the Chiefs are not relatively speaking, it's not as
big as East Stafford's making forty It's not crazy, right,
(02:23:11):
Donold's only making thirty three and a half. Not crazy,
h A lot of the I mean, Josh Allen's making
big money fifty five million for the Bills. They're contenders.
Jordan Loves making big money for the Packers. I would
say they're contenders. Trevor Lawrence is making big money. It
can be done. It can be done. You said, they
have a really good, savvy general manager who understands his
(02:23:37):
salary cap, who understands a depth chart, who, by the way,
hits on draft picks for the most part, unless they're
on the offensive line. Yeah, Calen Bullock hit Kamario Lassiter
hit guys all over the what it's going to happen.
And I guarantee you when the day comes, whether it's
this offseason or the following off season, we're gonna have
(02:23:58):
people wigging out and we're going to see the number,
whatever the number may be, and we're gonna go, oh
my god, he hasn't proven the dollar value to the contract.
What is Jordan Love accomplished more than him? Or Trevor
Lawrence or to a tongue of all. But I mean
we're also talking about the Jaguars are not the model
for success. They got twelve wins, they're doing pretty good. Yeah,
(02:24:20):
but that's that's this has been a one off. They
are typically an underperforming football team. And I don't think
they got a good coach who's doing well. Yeah, but
I mean paying huge money for mid level quarterbacks and
I don't even think CJ's mid he's that third. I
(02:24:40):
think he's good, he's just not elite. Yeah. The reality is,
though elite quarterbacks can get paid if you're the thirteenth
or fourteenth best quarterback in the league. I might saying
CJ's that. I mean, I haven't written down the latest list,
and we won't have time here beause we're going to
wrap up the show. But point being is that you
are going to be over paying, like Dak Prescott was overpaid.
(02:25:02):
I'm sack by the way played up to his contract,
but it hurts other positions. That's the question. It's not
about paying the individual that, it's about how it affects
your overall salary cap. I I'm not saying that he's
all time elite and you can't let him get out
of the building. I'm saying you can get close enough
to win with him, so he they are not going
to let him get out of the building. I would
(02:25:23):
be shocked if CJ. Stroud was not locked up long.
There's really no presence for any team to let this
happen unless you believe I mean, Sam Donald won thirteen
games with the Vikings and they let him walk. Yeah,
and he's been good with the Seahawks. He's got scoreboard
on it. It's not like he's he's you know, he's
(02:25:44):
light in the world on fire. He started off the
season very strong and since then he's been petered off.
He's also got Jackson Smith and Jigma who catches everything.
Twenty five touchdowns, fourteen picks, eight and a half yards
oft attempt that's very, very strong. But we saw Sam
Darnlogan's of Texans. He wasn't incredible. His QBR is fifty
(02:26:05):
eight point four. They struggled against the Panthers yesterday. I
don't know if saddle to me is this year's in
the West, is it's like Jacksonville in the West. In
the NFC, I don't know how much of a QBR
guy you are or not. No, but go ahead. Stroud's
tenth fringe top ten basically yeah again seeing I test
(02:26:28):
stats mix it up, ten, eleven, twelve, maybe nine on
a good day, but he's yours. He's tenth behind Mac
Jones and Daniel Jones. Number one is Drake May in
QBR in the NFL. God bless you, Drake May. You
did everything you could have win me a champion. Shortan
loved Dak Prescott, Matthew Stafford, Mahomes, Allen, the Jones brothers Lamar, Jackson,
(02:26:52):
c J. Strout to Burrow, Burrow is, oh, he must
not be qualified or something. He's not on this games
just we we could. We could pre record this year.
We could prerecord a show at a Baker Herbert Sam, Donald, Boonix,
Jackson Dart. That's your top fifteen Caleb Williams in that mix. Yeah,
there's a lot of good quarterbacks. Maybe CJ isn't top ten,
(02:27:15):
so he's made No. I think that's not fair. But
he's on elite, not top five. He's probably high end nine,
low end fourteen. Yeah, depending on your metric. I mean, honestly,
I you could you might be able to sell me
on a Mac Jones on it. There's no way Mac
(02:27:37):
Jones is staying in San Francisco. They're gonna that's that
is a resource that some team is going to use
to go get him in the off season. I wouldn't
be happy about it. But you're saying we're gonna keep
Will Anderson and Mac Jones is our guy. No, that
sounds crazy, doesn't it? How bad is Will Anderson? Are
gonna want that number one defensive end rush salary in
(02:27:58):
the NFL? You know he's gonna deserve it, you know
he is. I'm just trying. That's the thing is, if
you're well Anderson You're like, wait a minute, You're gonna
pay C J. Straw top three when I'm the top three. Oh,
I don't know what your other options are. Gino Smith
toa maybe no, no, Spencer Rattler no, Michael Pennick no
change pennixsill get hurt all the time. I mean, Kirk
(02:28:19):
Cousins probably retired by the time you need a quarterback.
I imagine Baker's gonna get locked up, even though he's regretted.
I mean, he's not gonna throw forty touchdowns every year.
That's right, all right, Let's get to Believe It or Not? Next?
It is the best I Believe or Not for the year,
the very best of twenty twenty five. It is the
last fifteen minutes of Ross's counter year. See later seven
one three two one two five seven ninety. If you
(02:28:40):
want to play Believe It or Not seven one three
two one two five seven ninety by Ross, the final
two minutes forget to Believe It or Not. If you
