And live after the Shawn Salisbury Showcontinued. Welcome back to the seaw Salisbury
(00:26):
Show here on Sports Talk seven ninety. It's that time of the week.
Let's welcome in Astros general manager DanaBrown to the show. Yes, we
do, for his nine thirty Wednesdayvisit, and I can guarantee he's feeling
better. A little up and downemotion last night, but he asked for
three in a row, and nomatter where you're play him, you got
him. Dana, Welcome in.Things just starting to look a little lively.
(00:47):
Just kind of your overall you know, you and I are sitting around
and I say, man, I'msitting on your couch and I need some
explanation of these last three games. What's changed? Give me an overall evaluation,
and then we'll get to the endof it. Yeah, overall evaluation
is the bats were coming alive. As you can see, we're starting to
swing the bats, and so theguys are getting more locked in, and
(01:11):
you know, we're pretty much gettingdecent starts. So uh and in the
back end, three guys are reallystarting to come together. So that's pretty
much the assessment. Dane Little, let's go back. I know your hopes,
not only hopes, but your goalsand your envision is this is the
World Series team back in spring trainingand navigating the injuries. But the first
(01:32):
part of this is how how faraway are they in your mind? Forget
the record, how far away arethey from being the team that you damn
well expect them to be. Yeah, I feel that they're right on the
brink of it. You know, once we get Hobby Air back next week,
you know, we'll probably have ourcomplete rotation that we were projecting to
(01:56):
have coming into the season. AsI mentioned, the back end three guys,
guys are really turning the corner. As you saw last night, they
all came in and pitched well. When you talk about Hater Presley and a
bray New you know, our middleguys have been holding us up today.
They kind of let us down alittle bit yesterday, but we picked them
up and you know in the extrainning game, and so ultimately the batch
(02:20):
is starting to come alive. Youknow, the defenses is there, and
so I really feel like we're righton the brink. And you know,
with this, with this three ina row, that's the start of something.
And let's hope, you know, hopefully we keep it up, no
doubt. Dana Brown Astros Jam forhis weekly Wednesday visit at nine thirty.
Astros three in a row and we'llget after another good Cleveland team tonight.
(02:42):
Dana with with Hunter Brown getting thestart. I know how how you feel
about his stuff. You've talked aboutit speaking of close, the up and
down part of it, the slowstart and to gather back in. Is
it the potential of the production thatyou're more excited about. I know the
production right now, but overall theytell our fans give him something to hold
on to forget the potential. Whywe believe that he's going to be a
(03:06):
great pitcher. Yeah, as everythingin baseball, it's a marathon. You
just have to you know, youhave to ride through the pumps and thes
and the down the EPs and downsof the game. It's just part of
you know, it's part of thegame. You know, you have a
young starter who's really right at thebrink of turning the corner. And you
(03:28):
know, I believe in Brown.I think he's got really good stuff.
I think he's he's got to getin the strike zone a little bit more.
You fall behind or some guys, but Ultimately he's a warrior. You
know, many people don't know, but you know, he didn't have all
of his energy yesterday, but hegrinded through it. And so ultimately,
(03:51):
you know, the ups and downsof a starter. I think I've seen
guys in my career, you know. I remember when I was over in
Atlanta. You know, we hadKyle Wright and he, you know,
he was struggling. He was reallystruggling, and all of a sudden he
turned the corner and won twenty gamesone year. And you know, I
had a three earning. And sothese young starters man with good stuff,
(04:15):
you gotta, you know, yougot to keep encouraging them. You know,
they'll they'll turn a corner. Youjust have to keep encouraging him and
keep keep at it and Hunter Brownwill be all right. And when you
said Danny he didn't have his energy? Was he sick? What was wrong?
Why not his energy yesterday? Yeah? I just think he felt a
little bit under the weather. Andbut he grinded it through it, you
know. And so you know, the first he gave up the three and
(04:39):
then you know he came back andgave us, you know, four shutout
innings, and so you know,he tried to push us through another inning
to get to one hundred pitches andit just didn't work out. But ultimately
I thought he battled through it.What kind of student of the game is
he? How how much does heput into the non physical side of it?
(05:00):
Yeah, it's n I mean,he's he's locked in. You know,
we have you know, this isan information organization. I mean we
take a lot of the data andyou know, so you know, you
can't fall asleep in class here. You got to you know, you have
to pay attention. This is veryimportant to us. So you know,
he he gets locked in just likethis, just as well as the other
guy. The big part of Brownis when Brown gets to the point where
(05:26):
he executes the pitch, that's whenyou're gonna see his thing turn around.
And I think he has times likethose four innings when he put up goose
eggs. Uh. You know,he has times where you know, he'll
he'll execute the pitch and and andmake that pitch and get out of the
inning or you know, or shutdown any type of rally that's coming up.
(05:48):
And then there's times where he'll leavethe pitch over the harder to play
or execute the pitch and then that'swhen he runs into trouble. But you
know, make the mistake. Theguys with his make up up and his
character and his stuff, they usuallyturned the corner. So I think he
may have it. We may havea season here where you know, Brown
(06:11):
carries us, so we have tohang in there with him, all right,
and the truth seeing him here forall of us. What were you
thinking when Hater came out for thesecond part of the six innings, I
mean the six that the six outs, not six things. When they brought
him out again, what was yourinitial thought? Yeah, thisial thought was
he had a cleaning first inning. It was really quick. He's had times
(06:34):
where he pitched from twenty five tothirty pitches in the game, so I
thought he was fine. You know, I was one of these games that
you were ahead by a lot,you couldn't afford to lose this game,
and you know, I was fine. You know, I mean, he's
had games where he pitched twenty fiveto thirty pitches before, so you know,
(06:54):
there was there's there's no qualms aboutthat. So I was fine.
I knew he wasn't gonna go packtwo innings, but you know ultimately,
you know, he came out,he did a great job. You didn't
give up their own run. Ihad four punch outs which were which were
big, went through the heart ofthe lineup in the first inning, and
(07:15):
so yeah, it was it wasa pre good audict. Do you like
seeing him pump at his fastball more? And that's you know that that's what
he's built a reputation on. Doyou like seeing more of that living with
that pitch? Yeah? I loveseeing the fastball. You just have to
locate it and that's probably his breadand butter, and that's why he's so
good. Uh. You know. The only thing is these big league hitters,
(07:36):
you know, if you keep showinghim a fastball, at some point
they'll catch up to it. Andthat's why you got to locate it.
So I don't care how good youare. You can throw a hundred,
you can throw one hundred and one, these major league tatters will time you
up. So you still have tomix in the off speed and you really
have to locate and make a pitch. Unlike many of us, the emotions,
(07:56):
you've you've been steady with your emotionsince you've got to this town,
which is a great thing. Soand all just kind of fun here.
But with the way that game wentlast night, data, where was your
I mean the ups and downs?Where were your emotions last night from beginning
to end? But that's kind ofbaseball, right, that's most of the
time. We all live in thatstage of the unpaved road. How were
your emotions last night during that Yeah, emotions are all over the place.
(08:22):
You know, very excited for LoperFeto getting a you know, big hit
and getting two RBIs great read byJeremy Pina from second base, and you
know, so emotions all over theplace. You go up, you know,
you get it. You know you'rein the game, you're down three,
and all of a sudden you're upfive, you know, and then
all of a sudden it's tied,and all of a sudden you're losing.
(08:43):
And so you're all over the placeemotionally. But you know, that's the
one thing about baseball. You haveto you have to keep your eyes on
on on on the road. Youknow, you can't, you can't swerve
all over the place, and youhave to stay focused. You have to
understand what you what we're building hereand that we had a good team and
I think you panic more if you'renot a good team. But when you
(09:05):
know you're good, guys are goingto execute. Guys will get it done.
You know, Taratini came up bigfor us. I mean he's been
absolutely brilliant big for us. Yes, he has been outstanding. He's been
outstanding. And then he's uh,he's done exactly what we felt he could
do. You know, he's areally good backup for Diz. He's a
veteran guy, you know, andhe comes up with big hits, you
(09:28):
know, and you can put himin there. You can start him a
day, you can start him twodays in a row. You know,
you could do a lot with aguy like Tarantini. Hes fact that he
needs a switch hitter. Uh,yeah, he's He's really been a blessing
for us. You told us thatI've said before about how how you felt
about Yanar Diaz last year, andyou were spot on all right. Five
years from now, look into yourcrystal ball and you've got that background in
(09:50):
scouting and personnel. What will webe saying about Joey lo Berfido. Yeah,
I think we're gonna say, look, this guy can do damage with
the bat. He's the left handedhitter. You know, you know,
we'd like to see him cut downon his strikeouts, but he's a gamer.
He comes to play, he likesthe high moment, and you know,
(10:11):
ultimately, I think he's gonna moveup a little bit in the lineup
because I think he just needs togain some some big league experience. And
I think he's one of those guysthat's going to play multiple positions, you
know, whether it's left field, center field, you know, first base.
Yeah, I think he's one ofthose guys that you know, when
(10:31):
you're a manager and you have aleft hand bat that can play multiple positions,
and he's got some power, he'sgoing to be an exciting piece here.
How often will we see him atfirst base? Dana, Yeah,
I mean that's a Joe spot ofquestion. But you know, I'm sure
you know, trying to mix themin and try to get all of these
guys at back to keep them fresh. You know, it's great to see
(10:54):
him in the outfield yesterday. That'sit's really home position. You know,
he's a left fielder. But Imean, I'm sure Joe will try to
mix and match the lineup is particularlywhen you're trying to keep left hand bats
in the lineup, guys who maybe hot, guys who may be cold.
You know we're gonna do all wecan push, all the buttons we
can push to win baseball games. All right, Then one to end with.
(11:18):
I've stated on this show many oftimes, regardless of his struggles,
that I've felt the last year, and you know, two months in or
a month and a half of theseason, that jose Brady has been a
great teammate. I've never once heardhim complain, Dana. I've never heard
him once give me the old Iconfess he did it as somebody else's fault.
He's owned everything even though he struggled, and the pride and eagle of
(11:39):
a former MVP it exists in allof us. And I said today for
him to accept this as a formerMVP and care about the team and go
down knowing that he even said,I don't want to. I can't basically
embarrass my teammates and embarrass myself. For my teammates say expect more from me
and the organization, and they trustedme when they brought me here. What
(12:00):
if you didn't have respect for JoseahBray, You not you, but anybody.
I think it went up a tenfoldwith what he's doing to try and
work on his game. When Danny, he's been around a long time.
Ego and pride can ruin that.I admire the guy's persistence on this absolutely.
And then just to the fans thatunderstand, you know, look,
being in this game for thirty fouryears and to get a veteran player to
(12:24):
say, hey, I need I'mgoing to go work on my rhythm,
my timing. I'm way better thanI am. I got off to a
good start in spring training. Ihad to step back with the knee injury.
When I tried to make a play, you know, in spring training
when I should have let the balldrop. It was a play in foul
territory. He was playing hard inspring training like it was October, and
(12:48):
so he gets hurt, you know, has a little setback, But ultimately,
Jose Brady is an unbelievable human being. First of all, he's a
really good teammate, and he's oneof those guys who's honest about his own
assessment. And you know, weagreed on both sides. Look, let's
go down there, Let's find yourism, let's find your timing. And let's
(13:09):
get back to what you did inSeptember and October for this club. And
there's a lot of season left andI think it's gonna be a huge spark
to our team when he goes down, gets himself together, comes back to
the major leagues, and he's thedriving force to that team. Can you
imagine a veteran player doing this.He does this, he's gets your stuff
(13:35):
together. That's going to do alot for a team like this. This
is a team you know that youknow where. This is a family of
guys, first of all, andthey're gonna they have great respect for Jose.
And Jose is determament. He hasdetermination, he has the work ethic,
and most of all, he's unselfish. He's so unselfish. This guy
(13:56):
wants to be good and so takingthis, I I gotta be honest with
you, this is so rare,Yes important, So so I'm excited about
him. We're gonna we're gonna godown and see him. Uh you know,
we'll have bad role go down tosee him and and and and make
sure that things are moving in theright direction and his timing is getting right.
And so this is a this isa group effort. It's a collaborative
(14:20):
effort, you know from uh youknow, the coaching staff, the front
office, the player, you know, the agent. We want the best
for Jose and this is gonna bea big spark for us. Mark Mumra.
Yeah, and I know I've keptyou long and we'll go now,
but just and we'll revisit this nextweek because hopefully they'll both be bringing more
power. It was good to seeBregman and Singleton hit the long ball last
(14:43):
night, something that I'm sure madeyou happy. But we'll get to that
next week. I've catched kept youlonger than i'd like to. I mean
that I know that you've got timefor but I appreciate you grinding it out
with us and giving us this greatinformation. And now it's four in a
row. Let's go do this andwe'll look forward to next week. Daniel,
thank you so much. Yes,let's go get them hanging on.
Astro fans, we're coming. Appreciateyou. Thank you. That's great,
