Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is Sports Talk seven ninety and it's our favorite
time of a week Wednesdays at nine to thirty during
baseball season, and we get him every week Astros GM.
Dana Brown joins us here on Sports Talk seven ninety. Dana,
Welcome in road trip fifty one thirty four, seven games
in front of first place.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
I know it's been an odd way to.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Get there with all you've had to deal with, which
we'll get to injury wise, but I guess proud is
the way I described this. I know there's a long
way to go, but eighty plus games in this team,
I don't want to overachieved may not be fair, but
you've had some guys do things that most people didn't expect,
and they're playing like they belong. It's been a great
watch and it must make you feel pretty proud of

(00:41):
the way they've been resilient through all this.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Yeah. Absolutely, You've heard me talk about the word grit.
We have it here. These guys have been grinding, you know,
through all the injuries, and so you know, to be
fifty one before in the first eighty five games, seventeen
over the seven run lead in the division, you know

(01:08):
the guys are really grinding through it and working hard.
And look they're picking each other up. You know. That's
that's what teammates do, you know when you're you know,
so when your soldiers go down, you know, you got
to pick them up. And so they've done a good
job of picking each other up. And it's been a
lot of fun, you know, because we're winning baseball games
and so the guys deserve a lot of credit, you know.

(01:31):
And we're working through this hard, you know, from the
coaching staff you know, to the front office you know,
to player development you know, and scouting. We're we're working
as an organization. And this is what organizations do, you know,
when they're you know, going through tough times. And so
you know, tough times of injuries have you know, forced
us to dig deep and we're showing some grit.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Yeah, no doubt.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
And Dana, these injuries suck and it's it's a bummer
for you that you have to play doctor. I get that,
but you know you understand the industry and the business.
So let me go to Jordan, which is the big
one in the room right now. You know, we're two
months in thought he was coming back. You know, a
couple of weeks ago, eighty percent healed, thought he was
ready to go. Let me start with the end and
we'll work.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Our way back.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
Did you guys with the imaging? Was he one hundred
percent before he took live VP? Was he cleared one
hundred percent by the doctors?

Speaker 3 (02:26):
Yeah? I mean he felt good. I mean, if anybody
was at the ballpark on Saturday and they saw him
hit the ball all over the place, he was hitting rockets,
and so you know, we were very, very optimistic, and
you know, we were, you know, so optimistic that we
got him down the Florida on Sunday and so we
were going to start their lives. And then on Tuesday morning,

(02:49):
you know, he still felt some pain and the most
important thing right now is to just get him back healthy.
You know, the team is playing well, and so you
know it's been a little you know, tough to deal
with because we meet this guy back in our lineup.
But you know, we picked him up really well, and
you know, let's try to figure out now what the

(03:11):
specialist says that he's going to see uh today, But
you know, let's be hopeful.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Hey, and no doubt about that, but Dana and you
said that he felt good. Jordan felt good and was
in hitting rockets like you said, and felt good. But
where was the percentage of through through the images and
what the doctor said, because you know, I think it
was last week or the week before you mentioned these
eighty eighty five percent. Where was he as far as
the healing and the structure part of this thing, percentage

(03:41):
wise of health not just how he felt. Doctors and
you guys say, okay, we're looking at these images.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
He's good to go. How close to one hundred percent
were you?

Speaker 3 (03:53):
Yeah, we felt really good, so excuse me, close, so
really close to one hundred percent. But the whole big
thing is the hand is a very complex, you know,
part of the body. You know, Urion hits the ball
extremely hard, you know, swinging that bat. He uses a
heavy bat, and so you know, these things sometimes could

(04:17):
take time and you have to allow this guy, you know,
to heal. He felt good enough, He felt good enough
to you know, swing a bat. He felt his hand
was healthy, and a lot of this it's according to
how he feels. And he felt well, and so we
gave him some swings here in Houston, and you know,

(04:40):
then we said, look, we're going to send him out
to Florida to get some lives and then maybe a
quick rehab and sugar Land and then let's get him
back to the big leagues. And and that was that
was the goal. And so you know that was sideline,
you know, you know when he when he started to
feel the soreness again. And so now he's going to

(05:01):
see a specialist and we need to get we need
to get to the end of this.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
Okay, Dana with this when this happened originally and if
the swelling went down and you guys were rolling through
the early parts of this, we're talking about now he's
seeing a specialist with this setback, and you're shutting him down.
Is this the first time he's seen a specialist, not
an orthopedic, but a specialist with this.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
No, he's seen he's seen three specialists. So, uh, we've
we've had guys on this. You know, this is as
I mentioned, this is more of the complexity of the
hand itself. And so you know, he's he's getting the
best of care. You know, it's it's like anything else.
You've got to figure out what this problem is. And

(05:47):
I think you know, we're digging deep, you know, to
get to the bottom line, and I feel like, you know,
this specialist, I'm actually looking forward to see you know
what this is going to this diagnose it's going to be.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
Dan Is this is this a setback that the structure
wise or with the hand or is it more a
threshold of pain thing for jordan which was And have
you imaged him since you felt as like yesterday, is
there an image or is the specialist the next thing?
And was is it him that the pain bothered him?
Or did you is it was it visible to see
that something was a setback, not just the pain.

Speaker 3 (06:25):
No, I think it was just the soreness in the hand.
And so that's really what calls the setback. I mean,
Jordanian is grinding through this, you know, every single day
he's trying to get through this. And so he felt
really good, and you know he was he was even
excited about it. You know, he was in a good mood.
He was smiling and you know, he was very happy,

(06:49):
you know, because he feels like he's missing out on
all the fun that's taking place here, you know, being
seventeen games up in first place, the guys are you know,
playing well, and so he's missing out on a lot
of good fun and so he wants to get back,
and you know, so I think it was the soreness,
and we're in a combination of the soreness in us

(07:12):
not wanting to push him to the point that we're
going to jeopardize him for the rest of the season
because we know that we're gonna need him. Look, we're
we're playing well without him right now, but we know
when push comes to shove, we're gonna need Jordan Alvaretz.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
So it's no doubt.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
Whenever he has any whenever he has any soreness, we're
going to push back and we're just going to make
sure that this guy is really, you know, completely healthy.
And so, uh, he felt good enough to hit, and
so that's why we put a bat in his hands.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
So he felt good enough, and you guys image wise
felt good enough that this wasn't any further risk as
well it had happened, but you felt good enough to
say he can he can hit ninety five. Let's throw
him out there against live VP. Both sides for if
you guys and him combination togethers it wasn't just jord
on both sides felt this correct, That is correct.

Speaker 3 (08:06):
We felt good enough from you know our last imagy
and from Jordon based on what he's telling us, Look,
I feel really good, and so we're like, Okay, let's
let's ramp it up. Let's get going. And so you know,
we were not anticipating him to feel that soreness on

(08:27):
Tuesday morning to cause a setback. But as you know,
make no mistake, we're gonna allow him to get completely
healthy before we run, before we run him out there
because you know, things are well now, but we're gonna
need him down the stretch.

Speaker 1 (08:43):
Astros GM Dana Brown for his weekly visit here on
Sports Talk seven ninety and this Jordane thing with this
when you say shut him down, Dana, like what you've
done for me, it almost feels is it bigger? And
you know I'm always trying to get to the bottom
and ask it. You've been always transparent with us as
well as you can be, knowing what you know. But

(09:04):
I do got to ask, is there any part of
you that's concerned, like fans are, that this is that
we've seen a movie, that this is a season inning injury.
Any concern in your mind or and your gut that
we're that we're concerned about that?

Speaker 3 (09:21):
No, not at all, because of how he feels and
because of what we've seen on imaging, and so now
the next move is to see the specialist, because part
of this is like, uh, you know, he wants to
make sure that everything is fine as well. He really
doesn't want to feel any soreness, and so you know,

(09:41):
sometimes getting the you know, opinion of another doctor can
get you over that hump when you you know, maybe
there's something that you have to fight through or something
like that, but you know, ultimately he's dying to get
back and you know, to feel the soreness. We just
want to make sure.

Speaker 1 (10:01):
And if this is an extended injury data, whether it's
it's been extended now obviously a little different than you
guys and all of us expected, and probably him and
working at it to try and move forward to win
you can get it. Let's say it's extended in thirty
games or whatever, it's through the month of July early
into August. How important and how much more emphasis is

(10:21):
going to be on and plus not knowing now about
his future this year until you see this new specialist,
how important will it be and how much more aggressive
will you be to go get a power left handed
bat at the trade deadline.

Speaker 3 (10:36):
Yeah, let's this is where I would say, I would
think that that's more of a hypothetical. Let me figure
out and let this organization figure out what the specialist
is going to say. It may not be that bad,
you know what you're describing, because I just don't feel
us that bad. I think we should allow him to
see the specialists and we may get good news, you know.

(10:59):
And forty eight hours.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
So, right, is that is that the time, Dana? When
is he seeing those specialists?

Speaker 3 (11:06):
Yeah, it's seem a specialist Today's supposed to take place.
So we should get like some answer in the next
forty eight hours or so. And so, you know, because
all of our doctors are going to view it, including
the specialist, and of course they'll all get together and
talk through it. But we're you know, before we get
into what we do or how will we pivot, I

(11:28):
would say, that's what this uh specialist give us his opinion.
Get that opinion from the specialist, and then we can
pick it from there.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
Awesome.

Speaker 1 (11:37):
Dana Brown for a couple more minutes here on Sports
Talk seven ninety and hate having him to play doctor,
but that's you know that that's uh, you're great at everything.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
It is a bummer.

Speaker 1 (11:46):
You have to do this to pain you we go bummer,
another bummer of an injury and something you guys have
to manage and grit your way through. How serious is it?
Ten dail? But are we looking these kind of things?
Are true to Dana is you know the torque on
the hand, but also the torque a ribcage? How serious
is this? And how long can we expect? Is this
two weeks? Is it a month at least on the

(12:07):
short side of it? What are we looking at?

Speaker 3 (12:10):
Yeah, just from talking to Pinya, he's already starting to
feel better. It's a ten day il that will go
through the ten days he is with the club, and
as long as he starts to feel better over the
next few days, he may start some baseball activity, with
hitting being the last one. And so he's already doing

(12:32):
some exercises and getting treatment and so, I mean the
Pinia one, we feel confident that, you know, he's going
to be fine. It's just gonna take you know, some
time and some rest, you know, for that little small
fracture to heal, and once he feels good enough that
he can go, you know, according to the doctor, there's

(12:54):
no chance to do any more damage. So once he feels,
you know, good enough to go, we'll start to let
him take some swings. And so I feel out very
optimistic that this won't be too long.

Speaker 1 (13:05):
Hey, Dana, and about that injury and specific and I
kind of stay to yesterday and tell me if I'm
wrong that with those it's not a matter of going
in and you've got to get all kinds of surgeries
with those, kind of like a broken toe, it's just
a matter of you got to let it heal, right,
whatever you do with ice and all that. But this
is just a time, the threshold of pain, type of injury,

(13:25):
how much he can take, and so it's really a
time and mother nature thing that kind of injury.

Speaker 2 (13:30):
Correct, Yeah, just let it heel.

Speaker 3 (13:33):
As I mentioned, he's already starting to feel, you know,
good enough to twist his trunk a little bit, just
to you know, when you're just testing it. And so
that's that's all a good thing. And so I think
this is gonna heal pretty quickly and we should get
him back soon. And you know, once he can tolerate,
you know, whatever soreness that he's feeling, you know, we'll

(13:58):
put a bat in his hand and we'll get him
we'll get him going. But this one we feel good that,
you know, Pino won't be out too long, and that's
why he's on the trip and that's why he's getting
treatment and hopefully he'll start some type of baseball activity
here in the next few days.

Speaker 2 (14:12):
All right, we don't have time. Wish I had another hour.

Speaker 1 (14:14):
Were don't have time for any more injury talk, but
going out dating on this one. How long can your
team continue to do this? You mentioned grit and residence
for damn Dan. I mean, you talk about the mash unit.
How long can these guys continue to play this kind
of baseball with guy, whether it's free agent, trade and injuries.
How long can you guys continue to do it this way?

Speaker 3 (14:36):
Yeah, as long as it takes. I mean, is a
well royal machine, you know, a well oiled machine. We
you know, as I mentioned earlier, throughout this year, you know,
our pitching's been outstanding. You know, those guys have been
really carrying us. We've been really good defensively, We're starting
to get some timely hits. We have some guys that

(14:58):
are heating up, you know, and so you know, the
position players are putting it together, and I think we're
just about on all cylinders. And that's why, you know,
we're on this run and we're you know, we're weather
in the storm of injuries. And I really feel like
this team is a good team and we're geling right now,
and that's a big part. You know, Once this team

(15:20):
starts to really gel the way it is, I mean,
there's good things that are gonna happen, and so, uh,
you know, I don't think there's any need for panic.
The team is playing well. We have some guys that
are hurt, we're in the grit and the grind, and
the pitching has been really good. So I would say

(15:40):
fastening the seatbelts is gonna be a good second half.

Speaker 1 (15:43):
So if you get the diagnosis in the next forty
eight hours, we will get that message as soon as
you guys know what the full diagnosis is on your
down correct.

Speaker 3 (15:51):
Yeah, We're gonna put something out, you know, as soon
as we know to let you know we got I know,
we have a lot of support and fans. I mean
we're here in Denver right now, and I'm just telling
you right now, our fans support has been outstanding.

Speaker 1 (16:05):
We mentioned that on the show earlier, how good the
fan base was in the Colorado.

Speaker 3 (16:10):
Yeah, Oh my goodness. I could see, you know, almost
a sea of orange out there, you know. And so
it's our fan base has been outstanding there showing up,
you know, their big time support. I mean, that's been
a big part of our guys. And so look, we're
we're locked in right now, and I love the way

(16:30):
we're playing, you know, and I love that we're playing
through these injuries. You know, it says a lot for
a ball club, and so you know, the guys, the
guys are locked in.

Speaker 1 (16:39):
We're ready to go playing great baseball and injuries suck.
Those can both be true. Dana, Thanks my man, and
good luck on this road trip. Can't wait for these
next two and then the three and Dodger Stadium and
have a great fourth of July and hopefully we'll get
good news on your on asap.

Speaker 2 (16:54):
We look forward to talking to you next week.

Speaker 3 (16:56):
All right. I appreciate you having me on each week.
Go Astro fan.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
We're locked in there, you go, that's Dana Brown. We'll
come back and finish up. Captain Long wish we had
another hour with it. We'll discuss, and so will you
I guarantee it Sports Talk seven ninety
