Speaker 1 (00:01):
We're found for the Shawn Salisbury Show continued.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Welcome back to Shawn Salisbury Show here on Sports Talk
seven on e's Shawn Salisbury, Brian and Lima Manuel Elmore.
Speaker 3 (00:17):
Now we're gonna welcome in national college football insider Barrett Salite.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Yeah, it's been way too long since that.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
My guy on You get him at Serious XM College
Radio where he's talking all college football. Also a columnist
at out Kick and one of my favorite dudes in
a great, great follow on Twitter as well. Barrett, what's up, brother,
It's good to have you on, man. I've been way
too long, my man.
Speaker 4 (00:39):
It's been way too long.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
And I'll go ahead and send you my Benmo address,
some of your Venmo address.
Speaker 4 (00:43):
I'll say you all that money for those nice well.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Yeah, you do its, man, and it's okay. You can
send me the money. I'm not turning it down. I'll
just treat you to a meal when you come to town.
All is good here, brother, things are good. You know,
we got a slightly decent college football game coming to
Texas this week, a couple hours away from Houston. You
picked Georgia and Texas in what back in August to
be the National title game.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
Do you still feel that way? Do you still feel
that way?
Speaker 4 (01:12):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:13):
Because why, I.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
Don't know what to make of Georgia. They're just sort
of running the football. Last time we saw Carson Beck
in a massive road game, we saw Alabama, which was
a disaster. Now, it was funny he get Sewan because
he threw for over four hundred yards and was horrendous
in that game. It was so bizarre, And you know,
(01:40):
beyond that, I just don't trust that they can establish
the run consistently enough to beat elite teams. So I
still think Texas is there. I'd say Texas wins the
national championship at this point. Will Georgia be there? I
don't think so because of Texas plins this game, and
(02:01):
I think will the George is putting a pretty difficult
predictament because that schedule is pretty rough, right, Losing a
third game based on the way they played wouldn't be
out of the question.
Speaker 4 (02:12):
So making the playoff might not even happen for Georgia.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
Is this game?
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Hey Bert?
Speaker 3 (02:16):
With that and talking about this, you know, rarely over
the last let's say six or seven years, you know,
I know, Alabama with Nick's been in there as well,
but there's very few times Georgia goes into a game
where you can match their physicality for four quarters. Right, Yeah,
And this season it feels to me and with Sark,
who's got that great perimeter stuff and they've been able
to run it. But it's to the point now where
(02:37):
their physicality is making a huge difference in their football
team and why you and I both think they're the
national championship type team if if not win it. So
is the does the physicality actually favor the Longhorns in
this game over Georgia, which we don't say very much,
twenty twenty four seems different.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
I think it does, but not by a ton because
physicality that's George's calling part and really that hasn't been
much of an issue this year. But it's how Start
made this program what it is.
Speaker 5 (03:08):
I mean, I think Stark got that job and.
Speaker 4 (03:11):
And Texas was announced going to the SEC.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
It's like, Okay, let's do this the way that it
needs to be done, and that's from the inside out,
and and Start's done that, and I think it's playing
paying dividends this year, paid dividends last year too, and
and I think that's that's a big reason why Texas
has hate the stupid phrase. But Texas is back when
Texas last year?
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Improve it right?
Speaker 5 (03:35):
And I think, you know, it's just like people people around.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
Here in Georgia are like, Texas isn't back. I'm like, dude,
they went to the playoff last year. Yeah yeah, but yeah,
I mean they they are the most physical team in
the SEC. I truly believe that right now.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
And that's a huge credit to start the foresight of
the ability to to now a gate not just the transfer.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
Portal, but more specifically high school recruiting and.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
And you know, and realize and evaluate which players who
a highly tuted offensive lineman defensive lineman actually have what
it takes to get even better at the college level.
Speaker 4 (04:17):
So yeah, this is it's an SEC caliber team. We
saw that last year and that's.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Been the plane for Sark from the moment the you know,
he got that job and the SEC came calling, and
he's done a tremendous job. And you know, like you said,
that's why this in this matchup from a physicality perspective,
it's still favors Texas, not about a lot, but it
does favorite Texas.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Yeah, football host they have no doubt about it, and
it's at home, smothered and covered serious XAM College radio
and it does a fabulous job and covering this game
for a long time and also a columnist on OutKick Barrett.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
Because you're in Georgia and you cover this, it's like
you're you're in the locker room with him.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
Is the same buy Is the same buy in the
we've seen from Georgia? Are we I'm just trying to
get from Texas perspective because they feel different. Like he
talked about running the football, it's different. Iss Kirby's speech.
Isn't getting old yet?
Speaker 2 (05:10):
Is it?
Speaker 1 (05:11):
It's the same?
Speaker 3 (05:11):
Mean because I love him as a coach. I mean,
that's it. We don't have to concern it. He's not
going to the NFL. He's there and bought he's in.
Is the same buy in?
Speaker 1 (05:19):
Or is it just a talent thing?
Speaker 3 (05:20):
What is it that's making us question Georgia already this
year after this run they've had. Why are we questioning them?
And they're in the top five in the country right.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Because they haven't looked like themselves right right? You know,
it's like sort of the same thing with Alabama to
a lesser degree, it's like you you don't look like
what you're supposed to look like.
Speaker 5 (05:39):
It's it's one ring, he'son loss and the sky is falling. Well,
why is the sky's fall Why is the sky falling?
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Well, you know, Kentucky had the ball with under two
minutes ago, with a chance to win, Like they literally
had a chance to win, which is not like one
of those sleepy games where okay, maybe they will go
through the motions and and and be Missouri or go
through the motions.
Speaker 5 (06:01):
And you know, really are that threatened by Auburn or whatever?
Speaker 2 (06:05):
You know, this is danger zone they were in with Kentucky.
It was an awful big game performance against Alabama, at
least for thirty minutes.
Speaker 5 (06:14):
You know, this is not like the floor is lower
than it's been.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
And I think that's the problem is that when Georgia
played their D level game, you know, the last four
or five years, they could still kick somebody's tail. Right now,
they play their D level game, they might lose, like
to anybody, right And so I think that's the problem,
and that's a frustration that doesn't it just exist with
(06:39):
Kirby and with Georgia fans.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
I mean, I talk about it on my.
Speaker 5 (06:42):
Show a lot.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
The transfer portal has really shrunk the gap between the
great teams, the good teams, and the gisto pay teams.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
And I use the example with Alabama.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Eli Holstein was the third quarterback on that roster, right,
and he's just kicking tail at it.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
Yes, that would not have happened in your day, right.
I just know somebody would have waited three years, so
you would have.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
Set his ass down till he was a junior and
hopefully he won the job down exactly Like.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Look, George's what are their best linebackers left for Kentucky?
Jawan Dumas Johnson left for Kentucky. It's like, wait a minute,
that this is not the same thing anymore. So, you know,
I think that's a frustration that Kirby has as well,
and I think everybody's trying to figure out how to
navigate through that in this day and age, and and
Kirky is one of one of those guys. And as
(07:34):
a result, though you have teams like Georgia, you have
teams like Alabama Ohio State where the floor of their team,
the floor of.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
That of any given game, might get to beat by
any bert.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
You've seen both old school. You've covered it for a
long time.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
I haven't asked you about this, and I'll get back
to that game before I let you go to the
game this weekend with Georgia coming into Austin. Do you
like the landscape of college football? Just the overall the
the way they're playing, the loyalty, the money, the transfer portal.
Is this your favorite version of college football? Or do
you miss a little bit of old school? Where are
(08:08):
we with the landscape?
Speaker 4 (08:10):
I mean, not to die the question.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
So it's a little bit of from column A, a
little bit from Colin B. I'm fine with them getting paid.
I'm fine with player movement. I'm not fine with the
lack of structure. But the NCAA is beautifully dysfunctional, so
I guess.
Speaker 5 (08:24):
It's not that surprising.
Speaker 4 (08:26):
Yeah, right, But I'm okay with that aspect of it.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
I'm not okay with the on the field desire to
become thefl College football, to me, is a much better
product in terms of overall and a man, I don't
think it's close, to be honest with you, I don't
get close. Go back and look at the last two
weekends of college football.
Speaker 5 (08:46):
I mean, they both of them were just on real But.
Speaker 4 (08:50):
The nflization of it does bother me.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
I don't like an expanded playoff. I wish we could
go back to the BCS. I know that's not going
to happen, not going to go back to the four team.
But you know, but on the field, like the the
governance with how they're changing the product itself bothers me.
But the goal off the field that they're trying to
(09:15):
achieve I'm kind of okay.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
With makes sense.
Speaker 2 (09:18):
It's just not it's not it's just not not operating
very well. And you know, there are too many chefs
in the kitchen. There's no there's no leader some more.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
Yeah, I was gonna say the leadership. I'm trying to
figure out who that is. And it's organized chaos. But
it's still on my Saturday.
Speaker 5 (09:34):
You know, well why not?
Speaker 1 (09:35):
Why not? I can promise you this, we can't do
any worse. Brother at the leadership part of it.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
That I promise. I promise we can. We can fool
them into thinking we know more than we do. I'll
let you run it and I'll just be your right
hand man, all right, before we go there you go?
Before we go? Is if just fill in the blank.
For me, Georgia wins if.
Speaker 4 (09:58):
They average five yards per carry.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
So the run game domination at the point of attack
is pushing the pile and playing playing in short yarded
second and third down.
Speaker 5 (10:09):
Yes, and keeping Quinn youwers off the field, Okay, keep.
Speaker 1 (10:13):
Away all right? And and the Longhorns win.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
If the Longhorns win, if they jump out to fourteen
point lead or even a ten point lead early, I
don't think I don't think Carson Beck can handle it.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
So making making Georgia chase the entire.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
Game because they've already give up the running game, yep,
like they did that against Alabama. And look, Carson Bess players,
I mean on the road, I don't know if I
trust him.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
He takes too many chances and and.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
Look that's not all his fault because it is the
running game that that definitely hurts him there. But yeah,
if if they get up to a double digit lead
relatively early Georgia had, Georgia has and will abandon the
running game and get Carson back way too much.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
Become one to mission. Okay, let me ask this. You
brought up the quarterbacks too, Let me switch the quarterbacks.
Put one in Georgia and the other one in Austin,
which team's upgraded Beck's it's a starting quarterback for Texas
and Quinn yours is the starting quarterback for Georgia.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
Who wins that trade?
Speaker 4 (11:14):
Georgia would win the trade. I don't think they'd win
the game.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
So you think if Beck was here, that team's still
good enough. He's good enough to still take the win.
But overall, for the long haul, you would take Georgia
with the win of the trade.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
Yes, but yes, but I think like with Texas, Carson
Beck there, they've still got a great offensive line, right,
They're still doing final running game. They still have, you know,
a really good group of receivers putting some freshmen. It's
not just the quarterback that's making Texas Texas successful.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
Great point, Now give me a score of this one.
What do you think, oh man? Even if it's not
a score.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Since you have these guys, I mean you had them
at the beginning season national time, who do you what
is this close? Or are we are you thinking that
it's that the difference is double digits? What are we
talking about?
Speaker 2 (12:04):
I think I think it'll be a lot like the
Texas Alabama game last year.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
Close even in the fourth quarter. Texas gets a couple
of late touchdowns wins.
Speaker 2 (12:15):
Let's just make Hey, you know what, let's do exactly
what al Texas.
Speaker 5 (12:18):
Alabama was thirty one, twenty one, thirty one twice.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
So it's a convincing win, especially late for you in Austin.
Speaker 4 (12:24):
Hey, I don't think it'll be convincing them.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
I don't think it'll You think it's a late win.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
They win by ten, but it's almost a like a
late They're up by three and score a late touchdown
to put it away with four.
Speaker 1 (12:34):
Minutes to go. The type of thing got you correct?
Speaker 5 (12:36):
Correct?
Speaker 1 (12:36):
I know one thing.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
I ain't missing a snap of it, brother, And it's
going to be buzzing in Austin this weekend.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
I can't wait.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
If you're faint of Hearts game, you probably don't want
to watch any of us because you need not to play.
They're going to be popping pads and I can't wait
to see it as you get to see Georgia in
college football all the time, and they are putting two
great products on the field. Can't wait, brother, Hey, let's
get you back on on as regularly as we can.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
I love your insight as always.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
Yeah, man, absolutely, thanks for having me and I look
forward to it.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
You're the man.
Speaker 3 (13:02):
Appreciate you. That's Barrett Lee, one of my favorites in
college football. Covers it well and being a guy in
the Georgia area, likes Texas by double digits. But that
late touchdown that shows it up like a I don't
want to say a throwaway touching, but you get the
ball back, go down there and then there's not enough
time for them to get back to pop some pads, dog,
and they're gonna be popping pads.
Speaker 1 (13:20):
Barrett covers it and listen it.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
He's running that show every day on It Serious XM
and doing his college football show and covering it on
out Kick.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
That's Bert Lee.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
We'll come back and discuss more here the time as
we finish up Longhorns and Georgia. It's the biggest game
of the weekend anywhere any level, even high school Sports
