Speaker 1 (00:00):
I certainly didn't request Shenandoah, but I'm not complaining, not
at all. Thank you, John Alden. It is Kentucky, It's
Morning News, eight oh six here on a Tuesday, just
a couple of days away from Thanksgiving. This has got
to be one of the more unproductive work weeks for
a lot of folks, I'm sure. In fact, I know
there are many jobs out there that it doesn't matter
if it's a holiday week, short week, whatever, when it
(00:20):
comes to just what you do every day is the same.
And most of those jobs are probably people who work
in first responder type gigs, right, So certainly appreciate those
who do that.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
And I know that.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
Their holiday, hopefully they get some time with family, but
some people got to work. There's just no scenario where
you can have people working certain jobs. So it is
unproductive for a lot of folks, I'm sure, but not everybody.
So again, just a couple of days away. I'm out tomorrow.
I didn't so I got six days that I need
to burn before we get to the end of the
year because I didn't realize it. But I'm coming up
(00:56):
on this. Could this if I don't find a way
to get rid of these vacation days. This could be
three straight years where I've left days on the table.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
That is insane to me. Well is it that insane?
Speaker 3 (01:06):
Though?
Speaker 2 (01:06):
I mean, I guess I'm just surproud.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
I know you back when you were doing sports radio,
you didn't like to take off this time of year
because it's prime sports time.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Of course. Yeah, it's surprising me.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
That you wouldn't use it, you know, some more during
the summertime and the springtime, that sort of thing.
Speaker 1 (01:18):
There's no way to say this without it sounding like
I'm either the biggest dweb or I'm just laying it
on thick with sarcasm. But if I take a day
off and I don't do anything I really like that
that that's a.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
Bad day for me. I feel you, I know what
you mean.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
So I'm not saying this just to sound like you
know that guy, But I do enjoy what I do,
like if there's days where and this is, of course,
is a different world when I was doing sports and
that was really the biggest issues that I ended up
getting to November December and then I would have I've
been here ten years now, so I have a lot
of vacation that I'm thankful for because they give it
(02:01):
to us. And again, when you've been here long enough,
you get many days, we get camp days, two certain
holidays that the office side of things doesn't work and
we do, so we get to make those days up.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
So anyways, it would get to peak.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Time for where the sports in this market, the audience
that we have in sports radio, you know, it would
just feel like I'm missing out on a big moment
to where, hey, this is where things are really really
you know, this is when the action is going on.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
Right.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
You have the Kentucky Louisill Game takes place in December
every year. Usually it's closer to Christmas. You've got you know,
a big Bowl game maybe, or you've got football season
finishing up. Obviously, the Governor's Cup Game now for a
while has taken place right after Thanksgiving. So I just
felt like it wouldn't be good for me in my
field and what I do to be off.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
But what I.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
Finally realized is that your audience changes. Even though we've
got things that people really care about, care about like
these two teams playing in both basketball and football, college
football playoff race, those kind of things. I mean, college
basketball is always a big deal around here, and certainly
you've got big games during November and December for these
teams at least, you know, occasionally, So even though that's
(03:10):
what people really care about, the audience is different as
far as just they're commute, because most people try to
find ways to take off work, or they have a
different schedule because of Christmas, break with the kids, that
kind of stuff. So that is what's kept me from
using days previously, and now it's just there was this
year we didn't take one trip that we typically take.
That's how I've ended up with more than than I
(03:30):
usually have. But I'm gonna try to use them all
because why not, right, that's why you know, That's why
you have them so you can use them. So tomorrow
I'll be taking the day off, but I may want
to be with you, to be honest, just because I
got to watch my kids. And you know, it's not
the end of the world. Obviously, I enjoy spending time
with my kids, but keeping them entertained, keeping them busy,
(03:52):
has become a more challenging thing the older they get.
There's this thing called patience that they don't you know,
they don't seem to have much of it. I don't
know where where can I get them some? Where can
I provide some patience for my nine year old daughter
and my five year old son, because if you've got some,
I'll pay top dollar for it. I mean, my son,
(04:16):
for the first time told me he was bored. He
doesn't know what board is, man, I mean bored for him,
he doesn't know what bored is. And you know, I
quickly tell him, snap at him to be appreciative of
all the things he has to go do, like he
shouldn't be bored, and he knows that, but like you know,
he can only do certain things so long. So when
that happens, then he wants me to go play with him.
(04:37):
And I don't mind doing that. But you know, if
I didn't ask for a break, he would ask me
to play Madden with him for seven straight hours. And
you know, love my son, but I don't want to
do that. When you go outside and play sometimes, but obviously,
whenever the weather is cold or rainy or whatever, it's
it's not as fun to go do. So yeah, I'm
out tomorrow. You'll be in good hands, though, and I'll
be back at it on Monday after a h hopefully
(05:00):
what is a good Thanksgiving week and where I'm going
to eat a lot of food.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
All right, let's get to an update of traviicking weather.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
We've got Rody O'Neil set to join us coming up
around eight thirty five, so stick around again. It's coffee
and company. We're fueled by Thornton's here at news Radio
eight forty whas. It's been a busy morning here at
news Radio eight forty whas. We did discuss the change
of plans. They were going to vote to potentially start
school times twenty minutes earlier for all levels of school
(05:26):
in JCPS elementary, middle, and high school, and now that
that's going to they're hitting pause on that. Obviously, that's
something that there was a lot of pushback from parents.
Sounds like it was also something that would have been
a move to make teachers a little happier. It sounds
like many of them wanted it. But I think when
you've got to make decisions that are going to be difficult,
(05:46):
like you're going to make decisions that are going to
make a lot of people mad. I mean, I feel
like that's kind of what that job is. No matter
what you do, you just have to know there's going
to be people that want to yell at you about it.
But this is something you can control, right, Like you
don't have to start school earlier. So I think you
may see folks at JCPS, doctor Brian Yearwood, the new superintendent,
(06:07):
making those decisions that are avoidable, meaning like making a
decision that you know this decision would upset parents. It's
in your control, so you know, let's just leave that alone.
Whereas these decisions you have to make to restructure the
overall JCPS, I mean existence, I mean, who knows what
that's going to look like. Right, I've said for weeks now,
(06:29):
what's off the table when it comes to eliminating the
budget deficit one hundred and thirty two million dollars needs
to be trimmed. What move can be made that you
would say, Okay, that's a big shocker. I can't believe
they did that. Well, you probably have some quick realization that, oh, yeah,
I guess that's something they have to do because you know,
they're in that big of a nightmare financially. So they've
(06:52):
already decided to close down a couple of schools. They're
going to consolidate a couple of schools they're going to
relocate one and there'll be more to come. And one
of those schools that is closing down is Liberty and
they have some students. Yesterday they decided to do a
walk out. Clearly they're upset that their school's closing. They
don't like that. And look, I understand it from a
(07:13):
kid's perspective. Like a student, I mean, if you're I mean,
that's your home essentially, right. I mean, it's not your
home home, but it's it's like home. It's where you
go every day. And if you're at a school like that,
it may be where you felt sort of comfortable for
the first time. You're doing the credit recovery and you're
getting back on track, and now that school's not going
to exist. And it's for good reason though, because credit
(07:35):
recovery you don't need a specific school for that, given
the fact that now every school within the district offers
credit recovery. So again, we'll be keeping up as best
we can because I think when it comes to just
what types of things they have to do in order
to get out of this hole, what's off the table?
And that's a scary thought if you think about it,
(07:56):
especially if you're somebody that could be very much impacted
by some of these decisions. All right, let's talk about
my friends over at Track kenny Ford. The clock is ticking, folks,
because it's now November twenty fifth, meaning you've only got
days left before we get to the end of November.
And this deal at Track canny Ford is only available
for the rest of this month. And the deal is
(08:16):
is insane. It almost doesn't seem possible, but I can
confirm it is.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
It is real.
Speaker 1 (08:20):
They're gonna give you zero percent financing for sixty months
and no payment for ninety days on a handful of
the new twenty twenty five to Ford models. We're talking
about the F one fifty, the Explore, the Escape and
the transit van. So again, listen to me. I'm gonna
say it slowly, just so you guys you hear me.
(08:41):
Zero percent financing for sixty months, no payment for ninety
days on four different twenty twenty five Ford models Explore
F one fifty Escape.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
In the transit van.
Speaker 1 (08:53):
So it's only at Track kenny Ford, So make sure
you get on out there and see them Exit eighteen
ORF ive seventy one there in Oldham County.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
They'll be happy to see you.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Maybe this weekend you head out to take advantage, because
you know, maybe this is your Black Friday shopping. I'm
sure they'd be happy to see you. And again, you've
only got a little bit of time, we'll have to
take advantage. So again, it's my friends at Track twenty
foard Exit eighteen off I seventy one, just outside of Louisville.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
Go see them.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
They've got a beautiful, beautiful lot right there off seventy one,
beautiful showroom as well, and a bunch of beautiful folks
that work there that'd be happy to see you. So again,
go check them out. It's Track twenty four. All right,
let's get to a quick time out trafficking weather updates
on the way, another sports update. Rody O'Neil's gonna join
us at eight thirty five, so keep it locked right
here at news Radio eight forty whas. All right, our
(09:37):
final segment here before we hand it off to Tony
and Dwight News Radio eight forty Whas City Company.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
Let's talk about Moose. Oh is it tuesday? We're gonna
do time machine?
Speaker 2 (09:46):
Or did you not?
Speaker 1 (09:48):
I do have a couple of things, but I will
tell you. It's it's not this day in history.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
Not a whole lot, not a whole lot, all right,
So moose your son, Yes, my son, Moose so at
that same that you're talking about when he said on board, yes,
well no duh uh, you know, and again not old
guy screaming at the sky. But you know, what would
you do? We went out and played in a dirt.
But I bought John. I called it the lazy Dad
(10:15):
football game. Have you seen this? It's a net, right,
and the football is cut in half. Now, if you
throw the ball perfectly, it bounces squarely back to you.
If you're off just a tad bit, it goes off
to either side or goes straight into the ground. So
the football is a half football and it's just a net.
I bought it at Steepleton there in Saint Matthew's. I
(10:36):
called it the Lazy Dad so right.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
So I thought.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
And John was a wrestler and he had not the
dexterity to play a quarterback position.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
Anyway, you mentioned that, and there's about a half a
dozen dads our age out there, point at the radio going.
I got that one too.
Speaker 3 (10:53):
I guarantee you it was huge. Everyone had him at
the time, they still sell them. You need to get
that for Moose because it really does teach them how
to throw.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
The ball perfectly.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
I have given this kid countless things to entertain him.
Here's what I, here's what I. Here's my battle. He
won't play by himself. He wants to have somebody play
with him. I don't know if that's just his personality
or because he's five, but that's my issue, is that,
like he's got a play he's got a PlayStation, and
he's you know, he's yeah, because he wants somebody to
(11:23):
play with him.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
Won't you play with me?
Speaker 1 (11:25):
So then I'm like, okay, well, I don't want to
sell my kid.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
No.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
But then sometimes I just want to sit and be
bored myself.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
I want to be bored.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
Yeah, how does he he's five? Yeah? You know, I
think you're all right?
Speaker 1 (11:36):
So you know, he'llll and sometimes I can tell, Okay,
he's doing something to himself, he's having fun.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Then I'll realize where's dad. He's got to be doing
this with me?
Speaker 3 (11:43):
Yeah, And then and it'll be one day, it'll be
a twenty four hour period and you won't know when
he won't want to be around here. I will not
want to be hanging out with him because you'll go, hey,
you want to and you're like, uh no, I'm going
out with Brandon and Josh.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
Be that cat's in the cradle situation.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
So so I'm now to the level where I can't
go to u of L games without him and not feel.
Speaker 3 (12:06):
Guilty because you have betrayed him.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
I know. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (12:09):
And then and then we did have a chance to
go to the game they played last Saturday at home.
It was kind of a last minute thing and he
didn't want to go because he had something later that day,
and just you know, he's like, we'll watch it on TV.
So I was like, you sure you don't want to go,
and he was like, yeah, we'll just watch it. So
then I was going to try to find somebody to
go with and then he cried.
Speaker 2 (12:27):
He's like, Dad, I'm so sorry. We could go if
you want to go. And I'm like, it's okay, son.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
So we've got a weird thing going on, but you know,
I know that day, well, we'll we'll be there at
some point where he won't want to hang out with
me and it'll be.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
Really really sad.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
Oh yeah, it's hard. It's hard. But yeah, the lazy dad.
That's what I call it. It's not officially what they
call it, but it's a fitting name. It really is,
because you because it's your work. He's doing sports stuff
and you're sitting on the back deck and you're watching. Goeah,
good job son, good job son. It frustrates them because
if it doesn't you don't throw it perfectly, it doesn't
come back to you.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
All right, we do have two.
Speaker 1 (13:01):
Well, there's one game, the Governor's Cup game that was
played on this day, many many years ago. This was
nineteen eighty nine when Kentucky Louisville played. This had to
be I mean, this is Howard schnellen was Snellenberger there
eight that's not right.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
This can't be read. When did they know?
Speaker 3 (13:17):
Right? Nineties? No, it was the nineteen nineties.
Speaker 1 (13:19):
So did Schnellenberger coach against them?
Speaker 2 (13:21):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (13:22):
Okay, no, no, no, Schnellberger's gone. No, Schnellenburger was gone.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
No.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
S So how did the football game get We all
know the story. It's it's well, Lexington will tell you.
The Lexington will tell you. They finally said yes because
Louisville wanted to play so bad. They said we'll play
at your place for the first four years until we
get our stadium built. The Kentucky fans will tell you, yeah,
we said yes because we never thought your stadium would
(13:47):
get built.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
And we just kick your butt for four straight years
and then call it a day, and like that's believable.
They would think that, right, absolutely, absolutely, so the stadium
got built. If the stadium doesn't get built, and I
think it was Wilkinson, the governor. Governor had a lot
to do with it. And to tell you the truth,
give credit to the coach, the coaches that got it done.
Schnellenberger did get it done because he kept pushing it.
Speaker 2 (14:08):
So four was the first year.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
It raised the level of football in this in this
state by a wide margin. And it was always the
first game of the season, so the hype all summer
long and people.
Speaker 2 (14:19):
Have no idea.
Speaker 3 (14:20):
We used to go to the u L administration and coaches.
UK administration and coaches would meet at a golf course
and play the Governor's Cup golf outing luncheon, and the hate.
You could cut the atmosphere with a knife. It was
like they hated each other. They like it was legitimate
because the first game of the season. You had all
(14:42):
summer to talk about it, and it was again, they
need to move it back.
Speaker 1 (14:46):
To we had all summer to just be petty. Oh
and the pettiness. That's why the game got moved from
the first game because Kentucky started to be petty. Okay,
we yeah, we need to We needed the second game
of the season. So uh, this is also another good
example of what could have And by the way they
came in the season, everybody's hurt.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
And by the way exactly and by the way they
would put people in your cart would be a UK
and the UFL guy he was.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
It was so awesome. It was so awesome.
Speaker 3 (15:13):
You gve the tension in the room just eating lunch
before there the first team angry eating at the other
guy watching. Jurich and Barnhardt hated each other.
Speaker 1 (15:22):
So and then also Petrino of the UK coaches, I
guess it was Rich Brooks was there mostly Oh.
Speaker 3 (15:28):
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (15:30):
And I remember Joker and Charlie Strong. I remember that
era and it and it seemed pretty clear Charlie Strong
he seemed to have a confidence about knowing he had
to go up against Joker Phillips that you know, clearly
worked out that way to where Joker didn't last very long.
But yeah, they started playing once again in nineteen ninety four.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
Yes, that's right.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
They've been playing every every year since then.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
Yeah, yep, yep. But that's how it all started, Governor Wilkerson.
I think Wilkerson, look.
Speaker 1 (15:57):
Who knows, and this is I mean, this is a
little a fit. And had the rivalry series not restarted,
I mean, who knows? I mean that was it definitely
played a factor in Louisville being able to kind of
you know.
Speaker 3 (16:07):
Everybody always thinks that you know, oh what it is today?
Was it always like no, it was a basketball state, right,
and high school football was sort of in the background,
you know. And then that the Governor's Cup raised that
level of football definitely, and recruiting between the two schools
became a knife fight and that was a big deal.
Speaker 1 (16:24):
And it feels flat now for obvious reasons on both
sides this year. But when you get to Saturday and
they kick it off, the tension will be there, and
it'll and you'll be reminded just how much this is
a rivalry. Ye, all right, we're out of Tom Tony
Dwight coming your way.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
Next right here at news Radio eight forty whas
