Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, good morning and welcome in. It is a
Tuesday morning here at News Radio eight forty whas Coffee
and Company. That's us and we are fueled by Thornton's.
It's a it's a wet morning. It was that nagging,
consistent but not really a downpour type of rain on
my way in, and as I got on sixty five North,
got just past the fairgrounds, it picked up a little bit,
(00:21):
so be careful. There was somebody that appeared to be
an abandoned vehicle, I guess is what they call it,
which I don't know what it says that on our
traffic system, Scott, but sometimes it's not abandoned. They're just
there's it's a one car situation and they're you know,
they're stalled out, but nonetheless already one I guess, semi
accident that hadn't caused any real delays just yet, but
(00:43):
as we know, whenever we've got wet roadways, that could
lead to sometimes really rough mornings for us when it
comes to traffic. So everybody be careful. Today. It is
Thanksgiving week, and that's that's good. The vibes have been
strong so far this week, but obviously a rainy morning
is never is never what you fur, but we'll get
through it together. Do you have much? I mean, I
feel like I knew last night we were expecting to
(01:04):
get some rain once once, once it got dark outside
and into the evening. But I feel like once I
hit the roadways, even looking at my road in my neighborhood,
we got a lot more rain than I than I
realized that we were gonna get.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
They did, and I think it's may. It started earlier, Nick.
I was out probably about nine o'clock last night. I'm
my way home and it started started raining earlier, and
I thought, but you were up past nine o'clock, lass, right,
go figure out. I'm trying to get I'm trying to
get everything in mine.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
Thanks, that's right.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
You got a big day coming up, oh man. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
And I just got to look at our bank account
to it. My wife went shopping by herself yesterday and
I'm like, oh man, I'm the cheap point in the family.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
But you also and I and this is this is
just Scott Fitzgerald. Who he is. You You're you probably
thrive and and don't even mind knowing that you can
go and find the better priced items, right, Yeah, it's
like a nice self challenge.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Yep, yep, yeah, I mean I I know where I
can go. So I came back about nine last night.
The rain started coming down, so it started a bit earlier.
But as I told you, as we came in this point,
I think I hit the eye of the storm. I
got some when I pulled out, but it was a
dry ride in now today, as you mentioned, it's going
when things as Will Clark you say, when things fall
from the sky, people lose their ability to drive. And
(02:12):
so fortunately maybe everybody's out of towne for Thanksgiving. I
know some schools are off, some are still in my
daughter's I think you're your kids are still in right
and John, I think your wife's teaching today last day
for Bullet County.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Yeah, my daughter as well.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
But I think I know a few schools like Sacred
Heart is out all this week, and I know there's
a few other schools that are out.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
So hopefully that keeps things. We need to just start
embracing these short weeks to where we just collectively realize,
all right, we're not gonna get much done anyway. Let's
just let's just everybody, you know, let's just shut it down.
I mean people shutting it down today. Yeah, this week
will be very very unproductive I think compared to most.
And that's and that's okay, that's a good thing. That's
just the way it is. So now again, there are
(02:52):
there are are jobs out there, there are industries out
there that like, it doesn't matter what day it is,
what time it is, it's the same thing. And uh
usually those are pretty important jobs, like first responders of
that kind of stuff. So certainly appreciate you guys, But
for those that work the the the more so. I
guess in office weekday date, you know, daytime kind of shift.
I don't want to see your typical Monday nine through five,
(03:14):
but you know it's it's a mail it in type
of week.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
I think.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
I think there's a lot has been.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
A lot of potlucks going on it. We're having ours
here having hers a lot of potlucks.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
Is that it liked? I didn't prepare anything like is that? Okay?
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Yes, okay, nobody's going to care, dude, Well I stressed
about that before I have the I have.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
The guilt of like, well, I'm going to enjoy what
everybody else has provided, and I've provided nothing. I'm bringing
nothing to the table, no pun intended, but also like
you wouldn't want me to prepare anything. I mean, I
guess I could go buy a dip, bring it in
or something like that.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
I want you wife MACARONI.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
Yes, she she's she's won for one so far. We
had our first Thanksgiving UH celebration Sunday and it was
it was, it was a big hit. And she's got
to make it again tomorrow for another event. So I'll
tell you what you hit, tom Sean, I'll tell you
what you hit up here. And just past experience.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
Brady, our sales guy, his wife makes some sort of
crazy sweet potato. I don't know what she does, dude,
but it is amazing. So make sure you dive in work.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
Pot lucks are a good it's a real good food
day because you're getting homemade stuff and you never know,
you know somebody you you know, you rarely ever communicate
with and work just because it's a different department. Maybe
they maybe you figure out they've got a dish that
you would die for.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
But there's always that one person though, that brings in
the store bought cookies, oh yeah, and and our bread.
And there's that one cookie I found out from TikTok.
There's a cookie that's out there. It's like a sugar
cookie with icing. You see him in the bakeries all
the time. There's no middle ground. Half the people say
they have no taste. The other people say they are
sinfully delicious. And I think you know which ones I'm
talking about. I think they're called like ice house cookies
(04:47):
or something.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
Yeah. Oh, yeah, Okay, I know exactly what you're talking about.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
And it's funny because the internet is divided on whether
or not they actually have taste, which is hilarious.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
I went to Walmart briefly yesterday to pick up something
not Thanksgiving related, and there's a a lot of folks that
are procrastinated, it seems, when it comes to getting what's
needed to prepare for Thanksgiving. So be advised. Sorry, let's
get to a quick time. I will check on the
traffic out there so far, no real issues just yet.
We'll also get an update on how the forecast is
going to look today for Matt Melosovich of WLKY, and
(05:15):
we'll keep this thing rolling. A lot to get into,
including an already proposed change or a proposal from JCPS
that's already now been withdrawn, never never a dull moment
with JCPS. We'll get to that in a lot more
Right here at news Radio eight forty whas it is
news Radio eight forty whas Coffee and Company. That's us
and we are fueled by Thorntons. Keep Thornton's in mind
(05:36):
as you get your Tuesday started. They've got a lot
of options when it comes to keeping you fueled for
the day ahead. A cup of coffee at Donut that's
a good combo, right, Just three bucks every morning at Thornton's.
They've also got a lot of breakfast sandwiches. They've got
biscuits and gravy now, so take advantage and stop in today.
There's nearly fifty locations in the Kentucky Ina area, So
if you are in Kentuckyana, there's likely one near you
(05:58):
stop in. You'll be happy you did, even if you
don't realize that. I know internally you will be. You'll
be better off. Life will be better off for you
if you keep Gordon's in your in your in your
morning routine. It's actually science. I don't have the data
in front of me to back it up, but give
me time and I can I can produce something, all right.
It is coffee and company. And we were rolling here
a wet morning and so far no real big issues
(06:19):
as we are seeing some some I guess more than anything,
just the the leftover of the rain. I mean, I
don't it looks as if the rest of the way.
I don't know if we're supposed to have a whole
lot as far as rain and showers, but a lot
last night, and that has caused some some wet roadways.
On my way in on sixty five North, there was
I mean, put it this way, the best way to describe.
(06:40):
I already saw one car that appeared to have an
issue with hydro planning. But when you get to you
get to just past the fair grounds and in LNN
Cardinals Stadium there you hit that curve right by the
you know, right by ul really, and that's whenever you
start to have those just the way there. You know
what I'm talking about. If you've been on sixty five North,
it just with the ups and downs. It's not as
(07:02):
if it's a hilly interstate mind he means, but there's
areas where you just know if you're going fast and
it's dark and there's been a lot of rain. You're
gonna have that moment where you feel like you're hydro planning.
So please be safe and get to wherever you're going
as soon as you can, but again in a safe manner.
All right, So we've got a lot to get into today.
We've got an update coming your way here. Just a
moment on the sports side of things. Louisville. Last night
(07:24):
they were victorious in a game that honestly was not
a great performance as far as just sloppy play. Some
numbers that you typically see them really shine with they
didn't last night. But I felt like overall it was
a reminder of just how good this team can be,
because again, not their best performance, but still, I mean,
in any moment they go on a run against a
(07:45):
team like that, they're up forty points. So that's what
you're supposed to do against those kind of teams. But also,
we got to talk JCPS. They've already decided to back
off this proposal to start school twenty minutes early. Not
a real surprise, I guess yesterday I thought, you know what,
they're gonna make these teachers happy because they need them.
You really want to make sure you keep the teachers
(08:05):
you have and try to get the ones that you
don't have because you have vacancies. But then again, this
is something you can control. There's changes being made to
JACPS that are really out of their control. They have
to do it because of this budget deficit, so I
guess that's probably the biggest reason why they've moved off that.
But also, well look at the other schools, right, They've
now got a breakdown that's public as far as just
the list of who's going to be on the chopping
(08:27):
block as they likely continue to eliminate schools within JCPS.
And I don't know if you guys have followed it,
but we've got a true crime mystery situation that has
really become a big story nationally and I'm invested, folks.
It's a high school football coach who is undefeated, his
team is in the postseason, and he's vanished, really really
(08:47):
odd out of Virginia. So again, we're loaded this morning,
and I hope you stick with us. Right here, it's
news Radio eight forty whas it is S five thirty five.
Here at news Radio eight forty whas, Happy Tuesday to
coffee and company. We are field about Thorton's appreciate you
hanging out with us to get this rainy Tuesday started.
We do have one accident, which I believe it's the
one that I that I just saw on my way
(09:09):
in that look to have just happened. It is a
one vehicle crash. Looks like it's just there's one vehicle
that is stalled on the right side on the right lane.
So it's I sixty five north right at Arthur Street.
So when you're heading downtown on sixty five North at
Arthur Street, there's not really any delays at this point,
but the right lane and right shoulder are blocked. So
so far, I guess there's just not enough people out
(09:31):
and about that has caused any real backups, but obviously
that can change. Is as I say this, there are
many people that are getting in their car to start
their commute. So again be advised this morning. We're off
to a off to a wet start and that can
always lead to some traffic issues. So again we'll keep
you updated throughout the morning. Bobby Ellis, we'll have an
update for you coming up here in just a few minutes.
All right, if you guys want to take us with
you wherever you go, you can do that listen live
(09:52):
on the iHeart Radio app. Also listen live at whas
dot com and on the app. You've got the talk
back line powered by Alex R. White pl see Sue
Distracted Driver dot com. So just know that that's there
for you to chime in and share with us whatever
you'd like. All right, So, JCPS some updates from yesterday's
conversation surrounding the Jefferson County Public School District because they
(10:14):
had proposed starting school twenty minutes early for everybody, and
the reason for that, among I guess many reasons that
they were looking into, it was because it's been something
that teachers and administrators have wanted and pushed for. I'm
sure that's not a unanimous thing, but I thought, okay,
well that makes sense. You want to You obviously want
(10:37):
to keep your teachers happy as best you can, especially
whenever you've got a shortage of them, which most people do.
That's not just a JCPS issue. That's everywhere. And not
to say that every school district has many, many vacancies,
but just that profession alone, it's not being pursued as
much as it once was, which, for being real, that's
(10:57):
a pretty concerning thing lest I checked, teachers are pretty important.
So anyways, they've now backed off that proposal, and I
think what it comes down to is there's enough pushback
from just just just an opinion on my end, but
there's enough pushback from parents that oppose it and don't
like it. And this is something they can control, meaning JCPS,
(11:21):
this is just this is something they don't have to do.
So when you consider some of the changes being made
that they do have to do, because it's just difficult
decisions that need to be made because you were in
such a financial crisis when it comes to the budget,
so you know, with that, I think this is probably
throwing the parents a bone and saying, hey, look we're
(11:41):
gonna have to throw a lot there's and right now
we don't even know the extent of what's going to
be changed in order to get out of this financial hull.
So the reversal came yesterday as they're pausing of withdrawing
the entire proposal. After what they call careful review, they've
decided more analysis and deeper engagement are needed in order
to make a change like this. So the says here
(12:03):
that the statement that Yearwood made it highlights the intent
it was to prove instructional quality and efficiency. But when
it comes to the feedback they got, obviously they got
a lot of pushback. The pushback was feedback. It sounds like,
which again, you know, makes sense. You know, if you've
had different starts, even if you haven't had a consistent
(12:25):
start time for decades. You know, once you've got something
in place as far as the schedule and you've adjusted,
and that's just the way it is, you've got a routine,
you probably are going to want to stick with that
unless there's a change that could be made that will
just magically make things a lot more convenient for you.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
Right.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
Also, when it comes to the school closures, there's now
a document that has been provided that tells you sort
of how they're looking at which schools are going to
be on the chopping block for another major round of
closures and consolidations, because that's common, folks, that's going to happen.
We've already seen five that have been affected so far,
(13:04):
but district leaders have worn this is just the beginning.
So the way in which they're making these moves, it's
driven by data that is specifically a profile index that
they've put together, so it ranks every school by building condition,
operating cost, and enrollment. So that seems pretty simple, right.
(13:28):
It's basically looking at, okay, what are we getting out
of the investments we make. In fact, that's in the
statement here from Superintendent Yearwood quote. It was a way
to track the return on investment in our facilities. So
they're looking at building condition, the operating costs for said building,
and the enrollment the amount of students they have. Seems
pretty simple, but it's not because they've got certain schools
(13:48):
that don't end up qualifying to be acted. And some
of them are because they're special programs, you know, special
needs kids, that kind of thing, but there's others that
aren't necessarily in that tier. It's more so just there
there's a window in which they can't be touched for
a while. So, for example, if you look at the
(14:09):
ten critical schools on this index, the ten that again
would would by just looking at that data, building condition,
operating cost, and enrollment looking at that alone, these would
be the top ten that would be next to go
in the next round of changes. But a lot of
these of the ten, again, four of the ten are not.
So here's an example, Western High School. They're number one
(14:31):
on the list because it's just twenty seven percent capacity
and it's been flagged for both cost and enrollment. But
it can't be untouched because it's a magnet reboot, meaning
it gets a three year enrollment runway, so it's in
a three year window right now where it can't be touched. Also,
you've got mcfair and Prep was number five on the list.
(14:51):
I got to be honest, I don't know what school
that is, but they've got low enrollment in an aging building,
but the recommendations are to rebuild on that site. I
guess when it comes down to the property, that's something
they don't want to move on from, so it will
it'll just be rebuilt of anything. And then you've got
other schools like Breckenridge Franklin that's poor condition, expensive run,
(15:12):
but it is needed in its cluster because of just
where it is. Olmsted Academy South could it could consolidate,
but it's also untouchable as far as just like closing down.
So the schools that are actually next in line to
get whacked, You've got Tap and Waller Williams. Those are
(15:33):
gonna be I guess moving the new facilities, King Elementary
being moved into Moppins Building, Zachary Taylor Elementary, it's gonna
close entirely. And then of course we talked about Liberty
High School, which is really just credit recovery, which is
not necessary anymore because all schools in the district offer
credit recovery. So again, those are the schools that are
that are that are There's gonna be changes made, but
(15:54):
there's more cuts that are that are seemingly gonna happen.
I just when you see that they've already made the
decision about the ones we talked about last week, and
you hear that it's only cut four million dollars from
the one thirty two that they need to get rid of.
I don't know how they would move forward without making
a lot more cuts. But again, maybe there's ways in
which they can trim this that we're unaware of. All Right,
(16:15):
quick time out, We've got Rory O'Neil set to join
us coming up in just a few minutes. But first
we'll get an update of trappicking weather at NewsRadio eight
forty whas. It's news Radio eight forty whas Coffee and
Company with you and we are fueled by Thornton's here
at news radio eight forty whs. And we are now
joined by Rory O'Neal. Rory, we've got a sitting US senator,
(16:35):
a former astronaut who may have crossed a military line
with a video. We've got about unlawful orders. What can
you tell us as far as what this senator did
in this video that has triggered a Pentagon investigation?
Speaker 3 (16:48):
Right, So this is Senator Mark Kelly, who represents Arizona.
His wife Gabby Giffords, a member of Congress who was
shot and nearly killed in an attack. But Kelly, also,
by the way, is on a short list considering a
run for the Democratic presidential nomination. He and five other
Senate colleagues, who all have previously served in some fashion,
(17:09):
were taking part in this video where they told members
of the military, the one point three million of them,
that they did not have to follow any unlawful orders
from the President or the White House and the Defense
Department have been upset clearly by this video. And President
Trump has said on trus social that this was an
active sedition, a crime that would carry a death penalty.
(17:32):
So now for quote serious allegations of misconduct. Unquote, the
Pentagon is now investigating Kelly and considering the idea of
bringing him back into active duties so that they could
prosecute him.
Speaker 1 (17:45):
How unusual is it for the Pentagon to scrutinize a
sitting senator in a situation quite like this? This seems rare.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
Well, unprecedented is the word they keep on using. Now, Look,
if there's a retired member of the military who did
something while in active duty, there have been times where
they've sort of called them back and then prosecuted them
in the military court system. But in this case, it's
an action that happened after Senator Kelly's retirement, So that's
what sort of makes it unprecedented. And then when you
(18:15):
look at it and you're like, well, what did they say.
They told members of the military they don't have to
follow illegal orders, and that's true, but obviously now they're
saying the administration, the White House saying well, we haven't
given any illegal orders, and you're undermining the authority and
the chain of command, and this is seditious behavior. So yeah,
really a fine line here, and a lot of politics involved.
Speaker 1 (18:39):
Roy o'nils, our guest joining us here at News Radio
eight forty whas after years of stalemate, negotiators now say
that peace talks between Russia and Ukraine may have finally
taken a step forward. What do we know as far
as what this significant progress may be here?
Speaker 3 (18:53):
Yeah, I've been of a baby step anyway. Today we've
got the US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll holding meetings with
Russian officials in Abu Dhabi. Now this comes after there
were meetings in Geneva with the US and Ukrainian officials
and that twenty eight point plan that's been talked about
so much. It's seen a lot of changes, so it's
sort of written in pencil to be sure. But there
(19:16):
were allegations that that twenty eight point plan first unveiled
over the weekend was to pro Russia and didn't really
make any have them making any concessions at all. So
the negotiations are continuing still a lot of back and forth.
You know, there was briefly there was some pressure to
have a Thanksgiving timeline that seems to have fallen away,
(19:37):
But clearly there's an intense focus on trying to get
some resolution here.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
As you try to, I guess check the pulse of
those who were who were who follow this closely when
they hear significant progress or maybe a baby step is
better way to describe it, as you mentioned. I mean
to me, I just feel like it's people are going
to believe it when they see it, well.
Speaker 3 (19:56):
Right, And it's also because the you know those same things. Oh,
we're eighty five percent of the way there. Yeah, that's
like because the other eighty five percent are agreeing that
the sky is blue and grass is green. Right, So
it's like, okay, that's the easy stuff.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
You know.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
Is that glass half full or half empty? Well, now
that's where you start to have the real argument, right,
So that's where and it's that last fifteen percent that's
the difficult part. Obviously, there are a lot of things
issues about Ukraine giving up territory in the don Bass region.
We've heard that President Zelensky personally has to approve any
kind of land swap that may happen and the security guarantees.
(20:31):
What does that look like if Russia tries this again?
Are there American boots on the ground to help defend
Ukraine or is it just Europeans or what would that
support look like? So a lot of very important details
still to be hammered out here. We could have President
Zelensky back in the US with President Trump maybe next month.
Speaker 1 (20:51):
Rory, you're the man is always we appreciate your time.
Enjoy your day, my friend. Thanks Nick, it's Royo and
Nealed NBC News again. Always appreciate him making time for us.
And yeah, the situation with the sitting US senator, a
guy who's a former astronaut, Senator Kelly, of course, what
a what a wild story? Yeah, unprecedented. I hadn't heard
that as the word being used to describe the situation,
(21:12):
but I'd say fits all right. We've got trafficking weather
updates on the way and more more incidents on these
roadways that you need to be updated on. So stick around.
Rory O'Neil, always do that. Bobby Ellis, he's the one,
he's the man, he's the he's the guy that is
going to be utilized a lot this morning because of
these these this rainy start that we've got, So stick around.
We've got that, We've got the forecast coming with Matt
(21:34):
Melosovich and another sports update on the way right here
at News Radio eight forty whas
