Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, we made it Happy Friday. Everybody welcome in.
It is Coffee and Company, fueled by Thornton's here at
news Radio eight forty WHAS, Nick Coffee, Scott Fitzgerald, John Alden,
John Shannon, that's us and uh you could take us
with you wherever you go. You can listen live on
the Aheart radio app. Also listen live at WHAS dot com.
As we put the finishing touches on. Another week here

(00:20):
and got another day of daytime basketball. For Louisville, they're
done until the NCAA tournament, But for Kentucky they move
on and UH live to h to play another day
in Nashville and a quick rematch against a Florida team
they just played six days ago. But you know, envious
is a Louisville fan because it would have been nice

(00:40):
to be able to say the same thing. But they
come up short against Miami, and now we wait and
see is mckel brown junior gonna play? And uh, I
guess what seed could Louisville end up getting. That's what
the conversation is going to be on the Louisville side
of things up until selection Sunday before Kentucky. You know,
gonna be a tough game for him today. I think
Florida looks like one of the best teams in the

(01:00):
country right now. Scott so a tall task, but also
with that tall task is a big opportunity. And I mean,
Kentucky's going to be the home team, right Florida's got
a fan base, but when they're not into basketball like
they are football, and you know, Gainesville not exactly as
close as as Nashville as to Kentucky.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Well, you know it's interesting.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
I was watching some of the crowd and I was
doing that during the Duke game yesterday too, because Carolina
fans were starting to file in as Duke was still
playing Florida State. You gotta wonder if fans just don't
give him the side eye because you got Vanderbilt and
Tennessee coming in.

Speaker 4 (01:32):
Then they're playing today at the SEC Tournament.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
Well as well. That should be fun those two rivals.
But you wonder if fans kind of give a little
side eye to Kentucky fans, just fans in general, like
say that I saw the North Carolina fans were settling.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
In behind the Duke fans, and.

Speaker 4 (01:47):
You know, it gets a little I was saying to
get crazy awkward.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
Well, it's the rare situation where you have so many fans. Yeah, well,
I mean there's a lot of fans, and I guess
usually it's it's you could pretty much expect which teams
are going to.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
Bring the biggest fan bases.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
But overall, I mean, even if there is like a
sprinkling of Mississippi State fans, I mean, you've got a
bunch of different fan bases, of course, different amounts of numbers,
of course, but they know it's rare to have all
those fans together. I will say I've always respected the
North Carolina and Duke rivalry because clearly it's one of
the most historic rivalries in all of sports. And what
makes it really special is that they've both been two

(02:25):
of the best programs ever in college basketball, and that
rivalry has always been really competitive. And even this year,
it's a buzzer beater for North Carolina to win at home.
I mean, you couldn't have scripted it better as far
as just a dramatic, thrilling finish. But I never respected
the hatred they had for one another until I was

(02:46):
in Brooklyn for the ACC Tournament and Louisville was playing
Duke North Carolina was playing the game, I believe before
and I got to see a bunch of a bunch
of Carolina and Duke fans all together, and I can't
confirm they hate each other.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
I get that, And that's kind of what I was
thinking about when I was watching when I was watching
the games yesterday, and let me ask you, what do
you think about this Florida State head coach?

Speaker 1 (03:07):
Yeah, I think the hire was certainly one of the
most questionable hires that was made because this guy had
had some NBA background but really kind of an unknown
and didn't seem it seemed to be the real risk
type higher that other programs had learned the hard way from. However,
he's got his team playing really well right now. They
came up short and their season's over, but a strong

(03:28):
finish to where if you were an FSU fan you
at least feel like, okay, well, at least there was
some momentium that was established before it all came to
an end. But no Carolina and Duke. That was a
reminder for me, okay, just because you don't you know,
I don't exist in their world, so I don't see
it every day, but you know, clearly they don't like
each other. And what really fascinated me is that in
the state of North Carolina there are Duke fans, but

(03:49):
there's way more Carolina.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
And NC State fans.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
NC State's a humongous fan base, so Duke they don't
even I mean, their alumni base is really not that big.
It's not that big of a school. And a lot
of people who go to Duke don't stay and live
in Durham, North Carolina. They live in the Northeast, a
lot of them. So in New York there's a bunch
of them. So it was just it's a different element
that Okay, there's actually in New York City, there's a
lot of dukealom They love college basketball, and it was

(04:15):
just fascinating to see because that might have been the
best opportunity to see a big group of both. Because
Carolina is going to travel like always, they've got a
huge fan base. Duke not as big, but in that area.
I mean, if you go to Cameron, which I've been,
it's a cool experience.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Although it's it's it's like to see it's.

Speaker 1 (04:31):
An old dump and it's small, but it does have
sort of a historic feel, which doesn't really do much
for me. But I get why people call it this
this ultra event. But I'll say it's smaller in person.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
Than it is on TV. I mean, it doesn't look
big on TV.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
No, it doesn't. It's like when I saw the Mona
Lisa for the first time over in France. I looked
at it and I was like, I waited all day
to see it. I looked at it. It looks just
like the one in my grandma's house. I was entirely underwhelmed.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Yeah, now you've got me thinking it'd be interesting to
look at a list of of visuals right sites that
people just you know, bucketless kind of thing that are Yeah,
that's first when it comes time for me that everybody
just says it's underwhelming.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
Right, you look at it. It's a hole. It's a
hole in the ground, and I did it.

Speaker 4 (05:11):
You know, I'll never forget because I'm looking at part
of it. When you first see it, you're like, well,
I'm talking about the Mona Lisa.

Speaker 5 (05:16):
Now.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
When you first see it, you're like oh, And then
it takes about thirty seconds you're like, oh, that's it.

Speaker 4 (05:21):
I waited all this long.

Speaker 3 (05:22):
So to your point, I'd like to go to Cameron,
just to go to Cameron, and I think you I've
heard people say the same words you did. It's kind
of it's you don't want to say dump, dump, but
it's a dump.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
I mean, I'll say this, it's all compared to the
Young Center, it's a dump. Because the YOUM Center is
still relatively new in the scheme of arenas. It's still
I don't know if we can still have our announcers
say the the you know, the nicest arena in college
basketball every every game, like they do in the when
they introduce the starters, because it is nice. But obviously
there's been a lot more arenas built since this one

(05:52):
opened many years ago. But anyways, we've got another another
day of daytime basketball Kentucky Action. Of course, he'll be
here for you at News forty whas and of course
just a ton of college hoops over the weekend, and
then we get two selections Sunday and cannot wait. We'll
be here of course Monday breaking down the brackets and
should be should be a whole lot of fun, and

(06:13):
we'll do the morning we'll do a kind of a
check in on where teams are as far as the bracketologists,
I mean, right now, Louisville Kentucky safely in the tournament.
As far as seating, I think it's a pretty I mean, look,
Kentucky's got opportunities to strengthen their resume, but they've got
to get past Florida, I think before you could really
start to see any real bump. I don't think the
wins against Missouri or LSU did much to kind of

(06:35):
change anything for him. Of course, you know, if you lost,
it would have maybe hurt you. But Louisville looking like
a six seed, Kentucky really looking like the same thing
right now. And what I want to do is look
at where those six seeds are, Meaning, if you're a
six seed, like most project right now, which cities could
you end up starting your potential tournament running.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
So we'll take a look at that. But also, how
about this weather.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
We've got not super cold temperatures, but the win is
whipping I right now, you got forty three degrees here
at five twelve, and it is going to get up
to I think the highest sixty today, but it won't
feel like it is.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
This gonna be windy. Did we hear Cardosi say forty
five degree.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
But yeah, dude, I was telling you off the air.
I got my flags outside the house. I gotta get
my I'm gonna text my wife to take it down.
And my son's heading to the ball game today, the
Louisville baseball game. I'm like, dude, you might want to
pack yourself a little jack because that wind will feel cold.
Even at sixty degrees. That'll be cold on you. But
it's all part of the thing. And then the good thing, though,
is all this is going to push out tomorrow and
then we'll be at the Saint Patrick's Prey Tomorrow's be

(07:35):
that could be a huge turnout. Tomorrow weather's still looking
good for the absolutely, winds dying down highest sixty three
and then if you've got the sun out, it feels warmer.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
Do you go every year to I'm MC on this year? Okay? Nice? Yeah,
So it's that's good. I feel like I feel like
it's a big gigs gun. Dude, it's fun.

Speaker 4 (07:53):
You basically just announced who's coming down the pipe.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
Have you done it before?

Speaker 5 (07:56):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:57):
I used to be a Hibernian and then my schedule
here precluded me being able to.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
I was gonna say that how do you used to
be a Hibernian? How you can go to the meetings
you got?

Speaker 3 (08:06):
And it was telling when my kids were busy and
I couldn't you know, I couldn't do time.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
You kind of had to step away. They didn't strip
your status from you, right like it wasn't It wasn't a.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
No, I didn't do anything wrong.

Speaker 3 (08:15):
Good buddy John Oldwyer, past president, calls me up and says, hey,
you want to do this.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
And you know, they had.

Speaker 4 (08:20):
The blessing of the beer this week at over at
Goodwood Brewing.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
They do that every year they process in. It's a
big deal for the folks here. And not to be
lost in all that, the Hibernians.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
Do good work.

Speaker 4 (08:30):
They're a charity organization.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
So I will admit I learned how charitable this whole
thing is for the first time this week, and I'd
never heard thought much about it. I didn't think really
anything as far as what money raised goes towards, but
it is. It all goes to me. Every bit that's
raised for this goes towards different organizations and charities locally,
which of course is a great cause. But you said
something that again, I'm just admitting ignorance. Here blessing of

(08:54):
the beer, tell me what that is.

Speaker 4 (08:55):
It's awesome. Dude.

Speaker 3 (08:56):
Goodwood puts together the beer for the parade. There's an
official beer for the parade, and everybody gathers a good
Wood and then we process in with the bagpipes. And
it used to be Father followed, he since passed. Now
he used to bless the beer. But you process in.
It is a very formal occasion and it's it's a
serious thing. And then at Goodwood they have a big
picture of the Lord's Supper up there. It's huge, and

(09:17):
you do it right in front of that, and that
beer is blessed. Then the Hibernians march it down to
O'Shea's where they quote unquote tap the keg and they
break open the keg and hence starts the weekend.

Speaker 1 (09:27):
I'm fascinated learning more about this whole process because it's.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
It's it's interesting.

Speaker 1 (09:34):
And I haven't been to the parade in probably seven
eight years, but it used to be an annual thing
for me and a lot of my friends. And I'll
admit we used to just show up and get hammered,
like that's what that's.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
What people do.

Speaker 3 (09:46):
No, that's in fact, you know they're they're urging folks.

Speaker 4 (09:50):
You know.

Speaker 3 (09:50):
Make sure now the new thing is not just get
yourself a ride home. Don't walk if you're way too
impaired by yourself.

Speaker 1 (09:58):
Have somebody seen people out on the side of the
street and the bushes and yeah, so.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
We never we never did anything like that. But no,
I got it.

Speaker 1 (10:06):
I used to just show up and get hammered. And
now you know, if I win, I might do that.
I don't know, however, I have as I've grown up,
I've found a level of interest and I guess an
appreciation for everything that sort of goes into us having
this big parade in Louisville with the Irish community and
all that.

Speaker 3 (10:21):
So it's it's it's the family clans, it's the what
I like. The unions are involved, You've got obviously the
politicians make a presence.

Speaker 4 (10:29):
It's it's one community, yeah, on every level.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
And a few of our partners they'll be there with
the vehicles in the parade, and that's a really it's
a big opportunity to showcase your business and what you're
all about. I know, Alex, Alex White's really excited. Don't
have a couple of couple of vehicles in. Yeah, so
he's he's excited. So beauty it should be. It should
be great weather.

Speaker 4 (10:48):
It's gonna be great sixty three and sunny wind's gone fir.

Speaker 2 (10:51):
And then we might get snow Monday. It sounds like
you once Monday. Just give me them up day good stuff.

Speaker 1 (10:55):
All right, let's get to a quick time out. It's
got to be back with some sports updates for us
coming up here shortly. But first let's check on traffic
and weather. We'll see how the roadways are looking as
we get this Friday started. Hang out with us right
here at news Radio eight forty whas. It's five thirty
five here News Radio eight forty whas, Happy Friday, seea

most important meal of the day, and they've got plenty
of options for you, including a big selection of donuts,
different breakfast sandwiches, biscuits and gravy delicious coffee. And you
can currently get a great deal that probably won't last
too long, although I shouldn't speak to how long it's
going to last.

Speaker 2 (11:35):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (11:35):
It's not my call, but I know right now you
can still get four Monster Energy drinks for just eight
bucks if you're a member of the Refreshment Awards program.
So if you like me and you rely on those
to get you through, if that's what fuels you like it,
does me take advantage of it. If you look at
prices elsewhere, you'll, in fact, if you buy these energy drinks,
you know that's a good deal, So don't pass up

(11:56):
on it.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
All right.

Speaker 1 (11:57):
You can also take us with you wherever you go

that button and you'll be prompted to share whatever it
is you want. You get thirty seconds, so make sure
that you use it wisely. All right, Coming up here
in about ten minutes or so, we're going to bring

(12:18):
in Rory O'Neil of NBC News. We'll get the latest
on this Michigan synagogue attack that took place yesterday in
apparent terror attack.

Speaker 2 (12:26):
Scary situation there.

Speaker 1 (12:27):
We'll get the latest from Rory as well as of
course what is going on in Iran. And I feel
like we are getting close to a point of not
necessarily forgetting that this is going on, that we are
at war. But most people just consume whatever it is
that they've got to get through in a day, right.

(12:47):
They live in their own bubble, their own world, and
when the updates are not super fresh, meaning we're not
hearing in the recent days a whole lot differently than
you know, it's kind of become pretty consistent as far
each day. I think people just kind of they kind
of move on from it and kind of, you know,
not forget about it. But obviously it's just not going

(13:08):
to consume you, your your attention quite as much until
you go to pay for gas or you try to.

Speaker 2 (13:14):
Book a flight.

Speaker 1 (13:16):
My wife, she was telling me last night that for
our family, our family vacation that we go on every year,
we fly and she happened to book our flights. I
think it was like a month ago, maybe three weeks ago,
and she did some looking yesterday to see just how
big of a price jump since the war started, and
obviously airlines one of the many industries that are that

(13:40):
are racking up prices because of their cost and sometimes
there's legitimate reasons for them to jack it up because
they now have got to charge more so they can,
you know, continue to make the profit that they were
making beforehand. But there's some industries that just, you know, what,
what are you going to do? There's a war going on,
So yeah, sixty percent up charge. I mean, it's just
it's how it works. So anyways, I'm very happy that

(14:02):
she did that because in our house, we don't sit
around oftentimes thinking, Okay, we're gonna be going to war soon.
Is that going to lead to us, you know, paying
for more than what we're paying more for things than
than we would in a non war situation.

Speaker 2 (14:14):
So small victories, right.

Speaker 1 (14:16):
I actually have to get gas today and I'm gonna
get bent over like everybody else, want to go to
the pump. But nice to know that we at least
had timing on our side with booking airline travel, because
if you try to book something right now, I mean
it's always been expensive to fly, especially in recent years,
but man, right now it is it is pricey. To
say the least so again. Rory's going to join us
coming up here at about six minutes. Also, Leland Conway

(14:39):
going to be with us today. We get a busy
show for you as far as those that are going
to be joining in. As always at seven o'clock we'll
bring in Dwight Mitchell from LMPD. But Leland's going to
join us coming up a little bit later on to
discuss a couple things, including the Woodford County teacher who
shared something really stupid on social media that has led
to her getting suspended without pay and wouldn't be shocked

(14:59):
if she does and have a job anymore as a teacher,
And regardless of the opinions that this person has, I
just I can't get over how stupid people can be
to not expect to have any any any backfire when
you when you share certain things, and every day you
could probably if you looked hard enough, find somebody who

(15:20):
might have ruined their life with social media and very
avoidable thing to do, but people keep people keep doing that. Also,
Leland has a has a relationship with Thomas Massey. They've
known each other for a long time. If you listen
to Leland then you probably were aware of that, and uh,
he does acknowledge that anytime we bring it up. But

(15:42):
he's got I think a fresh perspective on the Thomas
Massey situation. As Thomas Massey is is somebody that used
to have a lot of support from President Trump and
agrees with President Trump on a lot of things according
to him. But obviously, uh, they're not in they're not
He's not exactly in great standing with the resident right now,
which leads to just an interesting situation considering he's trying

(16:03):
to remain his position and there's a lot of Republicans
that just because of Trump's comments on him, they don't
like Massy anymore. So again, we're loaded this morning, and
I hope you stick with us. It's five forty it's
news Radio eight forty whas, it's news Radio eight forty whas.
Thanks for hanging out with us here on this Friday morning.

(16:24):
We now are joined by Rory O'Neill. Rory, what can
you tell us about the latest on what is an
apparent terror attack at a Michigan synagogue.

Speaker 5 (16:32):
Right, terrible tragedy that was really could have been much
much worse at it all unfolded in Michigan outside Detroit.
A man identified as a forty one year old Lebanese
born American citizen took his truck and drove it into
this synagogue. Now he was shot and killed by the

(16:52):
synagogue security forces before you could get out of the vehicle.
But the fire that was sparked by this filled the
giant synagogue, which is among the largest in the country,
with a lot of thick smoke. I think about thirty
the first responders had to actually be checked out at
the hospital for their exposure to this smoke. Now, what
we think is this was an attack that was organized

(17:15):
after this man's family members were killed by Israeli airstrikes
into Lebanon in the past couple of days, and so
this may have been some retaliatory attack. They're trying to
figure out if this was something more coordinated.

Speaker 1 (17:29):
So, I mean, has there been any response from the
White House on this just yet? Given that that's I mean,
I'm not sure how much they've been able to confirm
that side of the situation, But that certainly adds an
interesting element if that was in fact the motive here.

Speaker 5 (17:45):
Well, right now, it's interesting new leadership at the Department
of Homeland Security now, right, So their statements on this
have been very bare bones, which is, by the way,
what we were used to, but just essentially stating facts
of this is a man who arrived in the country,
became naturalized US citizen as mostly because he married an
American citizen, but he'd been here in the US since

(18:09):
at least two thousand and nine, applied for naturalization back
in twenty fifteen, granted citizenship ten years ago, almost exactly,
back in February of twenty sixteen.

Speaker 1 (18:20):
Like a lot of times, when these things happen, a
lot of folks, I guess in areas where these tragedies
take place, they wonder, Okay, is this person working alone?
Are they working with anybody else? Do we have any
information on that just yet?

Speaker 5 (18:32):
Well, that's exactly the work they're doing right now to
see if this was anything other than a lone wolf actor.
You know, we've seen these other incidents like the shooting
at Old Minyon University yesterday as well, you know, which
is just raising concerns of are these more coordinated attacks
where these sleeper cells that have been here in the
States for years perhaps and have been activated now by

(18:54):
these American and Israeli strikes into Iran and Lebanon.

Speaker 1 (18:58):
That's a scary situation to think about when it comes
to sleeper cells, just kind of sitting and waiting and
of all the of all the things you hear that
can scare you when it comes to just what comes
with war that we're that we're experiencing right now, that's
certainly one that I think will make a lot of
people worried.

Speaker 5 (19:13):
Well, sure, and you know that synagogue also has a
school in It's the one that was attacked in Michigan,
So you know, just think of the foot traffic in
and out, and you know, just it's school. You don't
think of it as being a sure a target, a
terrorist target, And it seems to be that that's what
was unfolding there yesterday. Thankfully, again there was security forces
on the property that were able to shoot and kill

(19:35):
the suspect before anyone else was seriously hurt. I think
one guard was hit by the car as it drove
into the building. But the fact that this guy was
not able to carry out his plot is a blessing.

Speaker 1 (19:48):
Roy o'nils our guest joining us here at news Radio
eight forty w h A s speaking of Iran and
Operation epic fury. Any any new information as far as
what's going on over there, any any update. It is
much different than what we've heard in the last forty
eight hours.

Speaker 5 (20:03):
Not too much different, you know. The pace of the
strikes continues in Israel now launching more strikes into Lebanon
as well as Iran. They say they targeted about two
hundred different sites across Iran just yesterday. The one issue
that Americans are more concerned about without a whole lot
of answers right now, a US Air Force refueling aircraft

(20:24):
to Casey one thirty five crashed yesterday. It had five
people on board. We think we do not know the
fate of those people. It was not shot down. This
was some sort of an incident involving two aircraft, so
we're just guessing now, but refueling tanker and a second aircraft,
so something must likely happen during that operation. And one

(20:45):
plane of the two involved did manage to land safely.
The other though, the debris went down in Iraq, and
we're still trying to work on recovering the five people
if possible.

Speaker 1 (20:56):
Rory, you are the man as always, we appreciate you.
Tom have a great weekend, my friend, we'll talk soon.

Speaker 5 (21:00):
Thanks, big touch to you next week.

Speaker 1 (21:02):
That is rio'neil of NBC News. Let's get a quick
time out out of the way. We will check on
traffic and weather on this fine Friday morning, and another
sports updates coming up for you. I'm bummed my Louis
of the Cardinals. They're acc tournament running it yesterday and
I wanted to have another day of living alive with
a chance to maybe win a conference tournament. But now

(21:23):
they get healthy. At least they hope to get healthy
enough to get Michel Brown back and see where they
end up in the Big Dance. But Kentucky, they're back
in action. I'm sure Scott will touch on that. Coming
up next it is News Radio eight forty whas
