Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's ato five here at News Radio eight forty whas
thank you for joining us as we get this week started.
Coffee and Company Field Beth Thornton's I am Nick, Coffee,
the company man John all alongside today and it's gonna
be a beautiful day once again. Today we've got sunshine
with some clouds mixed in and a high of seventy
four and we've got rain on the way the rest
of the week, So enjoy this day. It's gonna be
(00:22):
gonna be a nice one. All right. We've been busy
this morning, as you could expect. That won't change. Coming
up at about eight thirty five will be joined by
Rodyo O'Neil NBC News. We'll get the latest on the
situation and Iran and looking forward to chatting with him again.
We'll do that coming up in thirty minutes. Also, we
did discuss some news that is a national piece of
(00:42):
news with somewhat of a local connection, and that is
the firing of an NTSB spokesman who if you see
the headlines today, if it's something that you that you
you know, you just got it on your TV. Maybe
you're watching WLKY and you happen to say Okay, where
do I recognized that face? Or where where have I
(01:02):
Where have I seen? Where have I seen that face? Maybe?
Where where do I recognize that voice? It's because shortly
after the ups plane crash here in Louisville, this guy
was the I mean, he was the guy that that
was given us updates and really the first person to
come in from the NTSB and give us, you know something.
But he was fired by the Trump administration. And again
(01:23):
that is a story getting some attention for one just
the the surprise, but also this guy still claims he
has no clue what led to him being fired. It's
todd Enman, who again he was showed up within the
first couple of days of the It might have been
the next day, to be honest with you don't really
remember the specific dates. But he was the NTSB board
member on scene and was given us updates every day
(01:46):
for the first few days there with some details and
some facts. And now it'll be somebody else because he
has been fired and he claims he has no clue
why he was fired. He was he was notified by
the White House, and it was a direct decision from
President Trump. That's what we know right now. He was hired. Yeah,
so he's he was he's a he's a five year
(02:07):
term for his first job, and he didn't he didn't
get further than two years, so he was given no reason.
And uh, if he does get a reason, I'm sure
he's gonna be happy to share with folks because this
seems to be, I guess a surprise to him. But
also I would I would wonder timing as well. I mean,
obviously there's some other things going on that are you
(02:28):
know that that that I would think would be preoccupying
Trump's time. Now again we know that that that Trump's
involved in the decision, but there could be a lot
more to it. And again, if we we find out,
we'll be sure to share it with you guys. But
I just expected whenever the conclusion of the nt NTSBAS investigation,
once it was over, that he would be the guys
sort of giving us the the final report. And again
(02:48):
now it'll it'll be somebody else. All right. It is
the ninth day of March and we've already had some
madness with conference tournaments that have concluded. Tickets have been
punched for the NCAA tournament with a handful of teams.
But this is really basketball overload this week, and more
so even this week than next week, because obviously the
Thursday and Friday of the NCAA Tournament, I think those
are the two best days of the year when it
(03:10):
comes to sports. But as a college basketball nerd, I'm
biased towards the sport. But this week, I mean, you've
got way more games going on and games that are
going to start early in the day. So I'm looking
forward to it, and I'm sure a lot of college
basketball fans are as well. When it comes to the
local teams, Louisville they got a good win, a win
they didn't have before that thing ended on Saturday at
(03:32):
Miami because it was a road win against a ranked team,
a team that is pretty solid, in fact, pretty good
in the metrics. Obviously, they're not a top fifteen, top
twenty caliber team, but you can buy Miami anywhere between
twenty and thirty and just about any of the formulas
and the rankings that are out there. So Louisville did
not have a road win to speak of, but they
did in fact get one on Saturday to close out
(03:53):
the regular season. Right now, they're looked at to be
probably a six seed if the tournament was to start today,
and they're going to start their ACE tournament action facing
on Wednesday the winner of the SMU and Syracuse game.
Now with Louisville moving forward, I mean, I kind of
feel as if everybody on the Louisville side is just
(04:15):
aware that you can flip a coin or decide predict
whatever you want. Nobody really knows what's going to happen
with mickel Brown Junior. And you're a better team with
him because he's so talented. He can just take over
a game at any moment. But I think you do
see when he's not on the floor. Despite you being
more vulnerable in certain areas, there's also more opportunities for
other guys to get into a rhythm. And Adrian Wooley
(04:37):
got some extended minutes on Saturday. He's been the starter
in place of mckel Brown all year when Brown has
not been able to go, and he more than made
the most of that opportunity on Saturday. So again, no
update on mckail Brown Junior, and I don't think we're
going to get one. We'll probably find out on Tuesday
when they released the injury report. And I wouldn't be
shocked at all if he's listed as out and they're
just trying to give him more time to get back
(04:59):
to one hundred percent. Now on the Kentucky side, a
rough last week of the regular season for them. They
go down to A and M lose at their place
in a game that really was in good shape until
they gave up a twenty seven to three run, and
then even after that they played well, but you just
can't dig yourself that big of a hole and expect
to beat good teams. And then Florida comes to up
(05:19):
on Saturday and shows once again that they are one
of the few teams that I think are realistically in
play to be the national champions. So no shaman losing
too Florida with how well they're playing, but it did
give Kentucky a sour endo the regular season where they
now have lost four of their last seven games. I'm
(05:40):
sorry they've lost. Let's see, they've lost five of their
last seven games, and they now finish nineteen and twelve overall,
ten and eight in SEC play, and for the first
time ever, they've got to play in the Wednesday games
of the SEC tournament. So they ended up finishing ninth
in the league and that's never good enough for Kentucky.
(06:01):
That I don't say that to insinuate that Mark Pope's
gonna lose his job, because that's not happening, but I
will say he is somebody that despite being a former
Kentucky player and a guy who totally gets the job
and understands it. This is sort of the for those
that say next year without a deep tournament run here
this year, next year is going to be the year
where he's got to do something special or his time
(06:25):
will be done. I mean, only the new athletic director
will make that decision, probably, and honestly, we have no
clue that's going to because Mitch Maarnhart's stepping down. But
if we end up there, right, if you end up
looking at next season knowing hey feel pretty good about
the roster, which I think that's another factor that's hurting Pope.
They don't have anybody in the mix. They don't have
a kid committed from the freshman class, so it's going
(06:45):
to be an all hands on deck transfer portal Hall.
And I think there's some guys that have been solid
for Kentucky this year. But let me give you an example.
Colin Chandler is a good player, but for Kentucky to
be who they want to be, Colin Chandler can't be
your best player. Now, maybe they go out and get
talent to surround him and they're loaded. That could certainly happen.
We know that they spent twenty two million dollars on
(07:06):
a roster. They're not going to have a shortage of
money when it comes to arranging a roster. But back
to what I was saying, if you get to looking
out and thinking, okay, well he better get it done,
because this is it. If we don't see something this year,
I'm going to hope that they move on. That will
be the moment where you realize when you hire one
of your own, it can get uncomfortable, It can get awkward.
I mean it already is, just because clearly fans are
(07:27):
upset and disappointed. Even those that want him to stick around,
those that think he'll eventually have a great tenure there
when it's all said and done, even those folks would
acknowledge that this season was not a good one. He
does have injuries, and that's certainly something you can't ignore.
But still Kentucky expects to win and they're winning, but
not nearly enough. And Florida came in on Saturday and
(07:49):
really looked like the Kentucky teams that you'd see during
the John Caliperi era, where you could come in and
just know, hey, we played well, but man, what are
you gonna do? They're just loaded. So most programs would
be able to take that and understand, hey, we feel
pretty good about it. They're really good and who knows,
maybe on a given night we might get them, but
they're that special. Most programs can stomach a loss like Saturdays,
(08:12):
most programs are Kentucky though. Kentucky's just different. And I'm
sure everyone knows exactly what I mean when I say that.
They just have a standard and an expectation that is really, really,
really high and that will never change. And even if
you're a beloved former player, you can't let you can't
let that fall off. And I think one thing that
didn't help Pope this year, and I'm sure this is
(08:35):
a factor with Kentucky fans as well, is that they
spent more on a roster than anybody in the sport.
And for it to be I mean, even before injuries.
Let's be honest, this was not a well assembled roster
for how Pope wants to play. And there's certain guys
that they gave an amount of money to that Other
schools probably knew what the bidding war was and said, yeah,
no thanks, she can have him. We're not coming close
(08:56):
to that because we can't justify paying. Kentucky had the money,
so that wasn't the problem, but how they spent it
was was certainly questionable at this point. But here is
Dick by Tell talking about the twenty two million dollars
that was spent. Dick fi Tell. I think him being
sort of one of the mascots, if you will, for
college basketball. He speaks for the sport for a lot
of folks. Not not everybody, of course, but obviously when
(09:18):
he talks people, people react or listen because you know,
he's getting old in age and he's Dicky v. He's
a character. But I don't think Kentucky fans probably had
an issue with with him acknowledging some obvious things we
played earlier, the sound of him acknowledging that, you know, hey, Kentucky,
there's no moral victories you expect to win. Well, he's
seen that, right, Dick's been doing this two hundred years,
so he's been there for all of it and knows
(09:40):
what Kentucky is as a program. And look, Prope knows
that too, but you got to win at a high level.
But here's him discussing Dick fi Tel that is during
the broadcast the twenty two million dollar roster for Mark Pope.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
Coaches dream have an eight man rotation. Florida has found
that eight man rotation and Isaiah Brown has really provided
him with with muscle off the benchte what he does
physically and shooting wise, on and off the court defensively.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
I'm going to say this right here again for form
winner lose. I've done several now Kentucky games, win or lose.
Twenty two million dollars this team of reports are in
terms of the nil for their players. I think at
twenty two million they could have put together a better
roster than they did.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
I really do content a little flip, and it's one
of those things that now when you were evaluating a
coach's job, it is how they assemble a roster. And
I guess it's always been that way as far as recruiting,
but also it used to be a different world to
where you would develop guys, and you would see a
freshman that didn't look great, but you'd know, hey, maybe
this coach is going to really coach them up over
(10:41):
the next two years and develop them. That's still possible. Man,
it's rare. So you know, knowing that he had resources
and this is the roster he put together, I just
think it's another chance for Kentucky fans to say, Okay,
I'm not sure if this guy is going to be
good enough for us, not because he's terrible, but like
we need the best, all right, quick time out trapping
and other updates on the way. We'll get to another
update with mister Scott Fitzgerald Forroty o'eels coming up at
(11:04):
eight thirty five. We'll discuss the latest on the situation
in Iran. So don't go anywhere. It's news Radio eight
forty whas. It's a forty seven here at news Radio
eight forty whas. Just a few minutes left here and
then I'll hand it off to mister Venetti and Dwight Whitten,
who's going to be making his return to the studio today. Tony,
did you notice the hour short that we were shorted
(11:25):
this weekend with the time change any any you told
this morning as.
Speaker 4 (11:30):
An old person, I was getting up way too early
the last couple of weeks. So I've be getting up
at four, not five. So this is going to work out.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
You're one of us.
Speaker 4 (11:37):
Yeah weah, no, yeah, I'm up at four.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
Yeah, there's no day choice or you just wake up
and don't go back to My brain goes boo, you're up, doude,
let's go. Yesterday was a moment where I part of
it was because of the time change, but I slept
till eight o'clock and I haven't slept that late in
a long long time, and it felt great. Yeah, no,
you can get that. As my life is.
Speaker 4 (11:56):
People have no idea when Dwight and I, Dwight complains
about morning. Our morning show started at six. I used
to compare, is a big difference between five and six
and people that get up earliergo, oh no, there is.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
When I did sports starting at seven am, I thought
that was early, and then I realized, oh no, that's
that's nothing compared to what this shift is. And it's funny.
I remember when everybody was ribbing Tony Cruz on his
way out about you know, now being able to not
you know, go to bed after dinner at six o'clock.
And he defended himself with like, hey, guys, I mean
you realize like sometimes on Fridays I'm up to like
(12:28):
nine to fifteen, and I remember like, oh my god,
this is going to be my life. I'm gonna be
reflexing and rebottling with you guys even know how wild
I get on Fridays. Man, not fifteen, But you're young
enough to take the hit for now. Yeah, And it
was a good thing. Is last year when I started
around July and of June, we were already in the
it was staying light outside for a while, so.
Speaker 4 (12:50):
And that's important, looks it's I interviewed a doctor once
that said he did the overnight shift and he would
put on a welding glasses and drive home because he
didn't want the sunlight to hit him. And then it
turns your brain on. So I was just like, that's weird,
but are smart?
Speaker 1 (13:07):
Reminds me? That reminds me of when people were getting
in the shower, getting dressed, getting in their car and
leaving for work and then just going around the block
and pulling back into their driveway when they were working
from home. Because they had, they had to get some
level of sanity.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
Look, in your twenties, you can work any schedule like
John right now, his base schedule is four am to
four pm. So I'm like, dude, you're twenty two. It's nothing.
When you get older it Routines are everything. That's why
people that listen to you in the morning, they get
in the car within two or three minutes of the
same time every single day.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
Routine.
Speaker 4 (13:43):
Yes, routines, and that's what we're driven for. So yes,
the daylight savings. Look, you're never gonna get rid of it.
They did it in the seventies and they went right
back to it a year later. And I think they're
going to keep col spill three sixty eight. That's that's
what was introduced on January fourteenth. And you know, there's
a real push to have the state no longer spring
(14:03):
forward in March, of course, and fall back in November.
Speaker 1 (14:06):
I mean, I get it. I think people prefer it
being the way it is now what it just changed to.
But I mean, I kind of I'm not one to
change things just to do it. And I'm also selfishly
thinking about, you know what, it's gonna be easy for
me to put my kids to bed whenever. You know,
it's dark outside. It's six o'clock. Now I gotta worry
about it.
Speaker 4 (14:24):
You know, though, isn't the world now just a twenty
four it's a military clock now, I mean, isn't it
really People.
Speaker 1 (14:29):
Work at all, they work at home.
Speaker 4 (14:32):
They work odd hours. It is such a diverse, weird
working environment that we're all in. But the world doesn't
shut off. The market is twenty four hours long. I mean,
it doesn't. It's not like the nineteen fifties where you
had shift work and YadA ya da. I mean, and
people with nine to five, No, nine to fives are over.
I mean, that's it's twenty four hour workday. So the
(14:55):
military time, whatever it is. Your problem is now you're
going to sleep in the sun's up.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
I know. And yeah, it's uh, it's not fun. And
I'll probably end up starting some of my evenings in
our basement bedroom just because if I don't, then I'll
never get to bed. But you did mornings at six
am and rock radio? How long?
Speaker 3 (15:13):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (15:14):
About five years?
Speaker 1 (15:15):
I guess, man, I'm just thinking about some of the
mornings where you never actually slept.
Speaker 4 (15:19):
Oh no, no, no, no, no, went from the bar gig
straight to the uh straight to the show.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
We used to it.
Speaker 4 (15:25):
We would be so hungover or still up that we
would pull the mic. We'd lay on the ground of
the studio and pull the mics down to our mouths
and lay down with a pillow and do the show.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
I mean, what a time. What a time. And it
probably didn't matter if it was a Friday morning or
a Tuesday morning. It was just it was just a lifestyle.
Speaker 4 (15:45):
Oh, play some old bits and a lot of music.
But no, so we're all moving forward. This week's gonna
be weird because we got UK basketball on Wednesday.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
So Wednesday, you guys are out early? Correct? Correct? Yeah,
we're out of ten, gotcha? Maybe and they will play
if they win. So the SEC tournament bracket is so
Kentucky will still have an earlier game. You probably would
get preempty just a little bit if they and they
should they should beat I mean, they should absolutely beat LSU,
who's one of the worst teams uh in in the SEC.
(16:13):
But yeah, here's the bracket right here, So if they win,
they'll play.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
It looks like a game that would be at let's
see twelve thirty. So you'd still be a little out.
I mean, in fact, yeah, the same game, so yeah, yeah,
so scheduled then.
Speaker 4 (16:25):
And it's called Catlanta. What's it called in Nashville? When
they take over?
Speaker 1 (16:29):
Isn't there a nickname or something they probably have when
I don't know it? Oh okay, maybe there is it
that they are they take over, they do, they take
over and when they lose is like yeah, and it's
a different crowd, right, like this is this isn't the
people who have season tickets in the lower Bowl at run.
Speaker 4 (16:44):
This is party time.
Speaker 3 (16:45):
USA.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
Got people that are coming probably from like the hopkins
Ville in the games. Yeah, and they get to drink
at the games, right, they're on Broadway pre gaming and
then they're in there and they're allowed. Oh yeah, yeah,
they got first time ever. They're gonna have to win
this many games to win at all. But it starts tomorrow,
So I'm out of here, Tony, and do I there
coming your way? Next, it's news Radio eight forty w
