It is six oh five here on a Tuesday morning.
Thank you for being with us at news RADYO eight
forty whas it is Coffee and Company, and we are
fueled by Thornton's. They've got what you need to stay

that you did. Breakfast sandwich is too. I cannot forget
about the best breakfast sandwich in the game. That's the sausage,
egg and cheese croissant. You won't find a better one.
In fact, if you do, and claim you do, you're
just wrong. And it's okay. I've been wrong plenty this morning,
I'm sure, but you got it wrong. Because Thorntons is
the best, and we're fueled by them, you should be too,

all right. So I'm sure many of you can relate
to this, and I'll give you a sort of a
visual here, or I'll set a scenario, paint a scene
if you will. You know, you're at the water cooler work,
which is that really a thing anymore? Like I for
us it would more so just be near the refrigerator
in the kitchen area, right exactly, people still have water coolers.
Like it's been a saying as far as just describing,

you know, the chit chat in an office environment when
you're at work. But regardless whatever that environment is for
you at your workplace, maybe it's you just near you know,
your colleagues on the assembly line, or I don't know,
maybe you share in an area where your cubicles next
to other people. Whatever it may be, I'm sure you've
had conversations where you share. You refrained from sharing an

opinion because you felt like you were going to be
very much in the minority. It would be an unpopular opinion,
and you just didn't want to share it. That's kind
of where I'm at with this, because I genuinely feel
bad for Nathan Stotts, and I know many of your
thinking feel bad for him. I mean, he killed somebody,
He killed an unarmed man who was having a mental

health crisis. How could you feel bad for him? Because
I don't think there's any scenario that this young man
had any intention of hurting anybody. And I don't think
he got into law enforcement because he wanted to kill
somebody and hurt someone. I don't know that for certain.
Only he knows that. But it's just the ultimate reminder

(02:06):
that when you take on the responsibility that comes with
being a sworn police officer that's on patrol, you are
put in situations where you have to make decisions and
those decisions could end up in you making the wrong
one and it kills somebody and it ruined your life.
And here's the reality. He's responsible for his actions. That's

(02:28):
that's how this works. The grand jury was able to
see what we saw, and I'm sure they had access
to maybe even things we didn't have access to as
far as what happened that night, and they made that decision,
And I totally get it. I just don't have any
I can't act like I think that this guy is
in any way like he was out there just recklessly

(02:49):
using his weapon and just was looking for a chance
to find somebody he could shoot. So I feel this
is a terrible situation all the way around, and I
feel terrible for everybody that is involved.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
Twenty six. Here are one two sixty seven come of
Kentucky versus Nathan Allen Stotts and are plead not guilty
and astra pre trot FM from state police. So by
agreements of Van every ten thousand folk Hazor twenty thousand
foot property vond to be posted by say five pm today, Yes, sir, okay.

So with that bond posted, it sounds like he was
released yesterday and now you wait and see how this
process plays out from the legal aspect when it comes
to the trial and all that kind of stuff. But
he pleaded not guilty to manslaughter and reckless homicide. And
again I think those charges I understand it now. If
I was somebody that was on the grand jury deciding

(03:40):
if charges are going to be brought, tough to know
without being there what I would do. But I get it,
Like it's not something I'm sitting here saying this is crazy,
this is unheard of. I get it, I really do.
But I do want to be clear. It's not like
I look at him and see him as some victim,
because it's not that at all. It's just he to me.

(04:02):
Will I have a hard time thinking there'll be other situations,
especially when it comes to local law enforcement LMPD level
that you'll be able to find an example where this
guy was really I mean, this isn't even about like
proper training, right, I mean, I think this guy had
proper training, and I think that he checked every box
as far as what you'd want when you're trying to

(04:23):
grow the LMPD force. And they need that, by the way, right,
that's why they've got so many officers working overtime because
they're short. They need more officers. And this is the
guy you would want. Was a high school football player
here locally, went on to play at the small college level,
was an All American, no discipline on his record, and

(04:43):
yet he ends up in this situation and he made
the wrong decision. And it's just a reminder of what
the job really is. You sign up to carry a
gun in unpredictable situations, and the reality is if you
make the wrong decision in one of those moments, even
without ill intent, a person can die and there are
going to be consequences. You will be held accountable for

(05:03):
what decision you make in that moment. That's the deal,
that's how it works. And the uncomfortable truth is none
of us really knows what we do in that exact moment,
I don't want to know. Maybe on a different night,
in a different headspace, he makes a different choice, but
on that night he didn't, and a man is dead,
and the system has to deal with both pieces, the

(05:26):
human being who lost his life and the human being
who made a catastrophic mistake. And with that mistake, regardless
of intent, there are consequences. So that's why I genuinely
see him and I just feel like, this is a
guy that you know made a mistake and you have
to be held accountable. There are consequences, but I just
don't in any way see this like any of the
other shootings we talk about that take place in Louisville,

and even those that are committed by law enforcement, because
you know this was clearly in no way defensible. You
can't act like he made There's nothing that you see
from the from the bodycam video gives you any feeling
that he did what he was supposed to do at all,
And for that you're gonna have to pay the consequences.
And that's just part of the deal. When you sign

(06:09):
up to be a cop, you are at any moment
going to be put in a situation like that, and
you don't know what you do until you're in that moment.
And the majority of law enforcement officers who serve and
protect and that is their career, it's their life. They
get in and then they retire many years later. Most
of them don't ever have to pull their weapon on anybody,
so they don't even know what they would do because

they've never been in that situation. You don't know until

tonight Louisville will have a player drafted in the top ten, certainly,
maybe even the top five for the first time in
a long long time. In fact, Louisville I don't believe
has ever had. Yeah, they had one number one overall pick,
and that of course was Purvecellison back in nineteen eighty nine,
and then they've had plenty of picks in the top round,
top twenty, top fifteen historically, but it has been a

long time since they've had somebody taken this high. The
last time it was Donovan Mitchell who was taken in
the middle of the first round, and that was nine
seasons ago, I believe. So anyways, we have somebody that
chummed in on the talkback with a question in regards
to the mckel brown situation. Again, he's the one who
will be taken, maybe even in the top five this evening.

Yeah, Nick, I wanted to get your take on this
as Louisville guy. Are you surprised that Brown didn't invite
Kelsey to be there with him tonight. I mean, I
just that almost feels like it's intentional, like that's not
something you just forget to do. Every college kid in
that green room has their coach there, every one of them,
So I just I don't know that feels personal to me.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
I don't know if it's anything personal from mckl brown
junior himself, and I really don't even know if it's
anything personal with his dad, who seems to be calling
the shots and right now, as a nineteen year old
young man, mckl Brown is a package deal. You get him,
and his dad's going to be involved until he can't,

and when he can't is when an NBA team drafts
mckel brown junior and says we drafted you and not
your dad. First step in getting this whole relationship started
as you establishing some boundaries to where you now work
for us. You're an employee, you're a grown up. Because
mckl Brown did not make his own decisions this past
season at u of L, and I think most people
are well aware of that, and it's unfortunate. I do

believe this is genuinely just a tricky situation because he
did have an injury. I don't think the injuries made up,
But at the same point in time, there was really
never any intent from the Brown camp, meaning his dad,
for him to just try to try as best he
could do to get back on the floor and help

(09:24):
the team. And if you're his dad, would you do
the same thing. I guess you'll never know unless you're
in that situation. But I think mckel brown junior did
enough good and he'll be good enough in the pros,
and there's enough awareness that it's not really him the individual,
it's more so his dad that made things kind of

(09:45):
messy here to where I think he'll be remembered in
a fond way. But we learned as a fan base
that when it comes to the one and done that
we've been so envious that other programs have been able
to do get those guys that are so talented no
matter what, they're only going to be in college one
year because they're just so talented. Louisvell never had one before.
In fact, the one and done era is different now

than it once was because college basketball is so different.
But this will be Louisville's first ever won and done
tonight ever, and I think it was worth it given
the fact that he was really talented. But did you
get what you expected as a Louisville fan, Probably not,
because one you didn't have that special season with that
once in a lifetime talent and he didn't even play

(10:27):
at the end of the year. So as far as
your question, I don't think it's personal. But I just
don't think the relationship is great between Pat kelcey and
the entourage that is Michel Brown's family. I think mckel
has a great relationship with his teammates. With Pat Kelcey,

I think all that's genuine. I think it just give
it to you directly. I would say that the whole
situation was a headache overall for the staff, and I
think they handled as best you could without disparaging their
play layer because deep down they probably were just able
to maintain their professionalism. But also I think they don't
blame mckel I think they just you know, they learned

as a staff. This is sort of how it works
when you bring in somebody that is really just a loner,
right You're he's buying time and collecting money before he
goes off too. Uh to the NBA. Now, Pat Kelsey
was asked about the the green room invite, and I'm
sure we'll get to that coming up here, and uh
and want here, actually why not?

You know it's kel kel has a very very very
close knit family, and you know there's there's only so
many spots in so many seats there. Obviously Ryan is

of a lifetime of work for both of those guys.

So this day and age, it's tough to know with
a portal being what it is, and really freshmen that
are one and donees, it's always tough to know, Hey,
that coach, do they do a lot right? Do they
develop this guy to be an NBA player? Or are
they going to go regardless, But regardless of that, right,
you want to be in the green room on tract Now,
if you're a coach, you want that visibility. You want
the world watching future recruits watching saying, man, that coach,

he can get me. There may not even be reality, right,
it may not even be why that person's there, but
you want to be there, and I don't. I can't
speak for Pat Kelsey. I wouldn't try to, but I
know if I was invited, I'd go, Even if I
did have a contentious situation because it's a good opportunity
for you to get some shine for your program and
for you as a head coach. So it sounds like
that invitation wasn't extended. And I do think the listener

is correct that it's I don't think it's personal, but
I also think it's it's another bad look for the
Brown camp to not understand that, like it's kind of
justmon courtesy to bring along the head coach who you
know was the most recent person to coach this guy
before they're off the to the NBA. Speaking of the NBA,
we got the draft to night and some we haven't
touched on this morning overnight. One of the biggest trades

in recent years in the NBA. It seems giannisnta Tacumpo
no longer on Milwaukee Buck. We'll get to that coming

ESPN reporting the team acquired the ten time All Star
from the Bucks yesterday in exchange for our package headline
by Tyler Herro, the former Wildcat himself, and three first

round picks. Miami is also receiving Bobby Portis is part
of the blockbuster deal. Giannis was at the center of
trade discussions going back to last offseason and was expected
to move before tonight's draft. Milwaukee is getting the thirteenth pick,
along with unprotected did first rounders in twenty thirty one
and again in twenty thirty three. So Nick, We've got
a ton of round ball to talk about today. I

don't think I've ever seen a moment in sports where
one sport is specifically dominated.

The way it is today. Yeah, Yan is the guy that,
despite being a veteran, still someone that appears to be
in maybe not their prom but certainly not far from it.
He is coming off of a season where he didn't
play as many games as it typically does, but it's
a multi time MVP and NBA Finals MVP on the move,
and it sounds like that that that had really reached
its end of life. Just the overall, like, if you're Milwaukee,

you've got a great asset, you can get a lot
for him, and you've probably maximized whatever you can get
out of that situation. And look, it included a title,
so therefore I'd say it's worth it. Kind of reminds
me what the Tigers are doing with Errek Scougle and
how teams do this. Now you get that marquee player
and you're sitting on him. The Red's did it with
Eli Da La Cruz to a little bit. You're sitting
on that marquee player.

You don't want to trade him because he's your star,
but then again, what are you getting in return?

And I didn't enough about Tyler hero to know. I mean,
I know I have enough about him, but I didn't know.

now know the musical acts that are coming to the
State Fair, and I don't want to be critical here
because I don't know what goes into it, but it
us feel like the overall lineup is is not I guess,
not that much different than what we typically get, but

it just seems like they're missing like one big big name.
I mean, you got your usuals, for example, like Ricky Skaggs.
I know he's going to be there. That's a state
that's a given kind of like you know bois to
them in Travis Stritt always going to be at the Derby,
always going to be at the Bar and Stable party.
I know Ricky Skaggs is always going to be at
the Kentucky State Fair. But you've got different nights here,

and that's that's what they've done for a while now,
where you just have a good variety throughout the entirety
of the State Fair. There's different nights for different genres,
different crowds. But of the of all the names here,
I mean, who's the biggest star? John is it? I mean,
outside of course our own J D. Shelbard, I mean
he's the big star.

Speaker 6 (17:46):
So for me, the draws, Blackstone Cherry, Okay, that's probably
not the biggest name on the lineup. That's who i'd
want to see. They're like a southern rock group from
central Kentucky. They have Kentucky roots, right, they have Kentucky roots.
They're a good band. I've never seen them like those,
so I would enjoy checking them out. But the biggest
name on here overall maybe fog Hat, but they're they're old.

Do you know, slow Ride, Slow Rides. They're big take
it easy. Yeah, okay, yeah, that's a great song. By
the way, how about this isn't a big name but Hairball.
It's an eighties rock tribute spectacle that could be awesome. Yes,
it sounds like it's right up my alley.

for a while. As as they write songs together, I
think they have some songs together. Ernest Hardy and Morgan
Wallen or a trio that I know have creatively worked
together quite a bit. But of all the names I mentioned,
Ernest is probably the one that is not is not
as not as mainstream. But that's okay. I will say

the can head Hunters. I love that they're still getting
booked for the Kentucky State Fair. Let's all go down
to doomas Walker, one of the best songs to ever
come out of the state of Kentucky and I'm gonna
I'm gonna fall over and die. If you tell me

think you're dead.

Here's the thing, though, maybe, like I mentioned slow Ride
to you a couple of minutes ago, all I had
to do was say it, and you knew what it was.

know it, go ahead and put me out of my misery. No,
I've definitely heard this. I just would have never known
what it was called. I'm actually hoping you're hearing it
for the first time because it's a life changing experience

here and do miss Walker. And I'm glad the Kentucky
head the Kentucky Headhunters are uh are still getting getting
booked and involved in the Kentucky State Fair. That song
came out in nineteen eighty nine, So you weren't born
and I was. I was new here to uh to
the world. I was a year old, So that's that's UH.
And there's also a kind of a connection to me.
So my father's family is from the Greensburg area, which

is not far from Campbellsville, Edmondson County, those that area
and where we would have our family reunions from my
dad's side of the family when I was a kid.
It was just a block over from the Greensburg Downtown area,
historic downtown Greensburg where Doomas Walker. The actual place is

where they got this Slaw burger, which sounds disgusting. I'll
never have it but what a legendary song. And if
you want to really just you know, go back in
time watch that video. The music video for that song
is crazy. So again we now know the lineup, and
in fact, it came out last week. I'm late to this,
but I did want to talk about it a little
bit because I just want to give you really quickly
before we step aside the comparison. And I don't know

what goes into how you decide to book who for
the State Fair because akin there's a cost associated others
have probably more resources when it comes to funds to
book these acts or so just decide, look, we're not
going to spend that much money because we're going to
be more mindful and we know we can have a
great experience without going and getting the most expensive act.
But like the Iowa State Fair recently, they've had people

like Luke, Bryan slip Knot, Shane Smokers before he passed away,
Toby Keith Hooty and the Blowfish, Like we don't have
we ever had anybody like that.

Speaker 6 (22:22):
You see, what I've always said on why we don't
get those acts is because we book all of the
big ones for our two festivals and such that's true.

Speaker 1 (22:29):
Yeah, that's true. But like the current Iowa State Fair
slate has Rod Stewart, Laney Wilson, Stained TLC and Salt
and Peppa Riley Green, who I think is awful, but
he's a big name right now in modern country. So
I don't know if it's about choice. But look, they

(22:50):
also used to have the Freedom Hall shows, which we
don't do anymore. Yeah, that's a really good point. Yeah,
we don't have the arena component like we once did,
and that of course, like there's certain acts that will
own come if you're having, you know, a stadium kind
of thing. Yeah, well so I'm sure that's part of it.
But look, I'm not complaining because they're bringing us the
Kentucky Headhunters and we're all going down to Doomas Walker.
