Speaker 1 (00:00):
The cool thing about this event. A lot of players
who are here who have local ties, including the three
time Big Eiast golfer of the Year from Xavier and
Duke but for our purposes from Xavier. Emma mc miler
is with us fresh off the course, even part today.
It's awesome to have you.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Thank you for having me.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
I could tell I interview a lot of people, and
I could tell when I talked to an elite competitor
because you're sitting there and I could tell as you're
waiting to go on, you're like replaying around. You're locked in, right, Yeah, yeah, Well,
well I appreciate you doing this because I know you
have a lot going on this weekend. Well, how did
you feel about your day to day?
Speaker 2 (00:39):
I had a solid round out there. It's pretty proud
of how I was able to fight whenever I was
faced with adversity. So did a lot of good things.
I'm going to take those into tomorrow and clean up
the mistakes that I had out there.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Now, you know this course like the back of your hand,
inn away.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Yeah, it's been a little while, but I'm refamiliarizing myself
with it and it's fun to get out there.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
Very good.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
How cool is it? I know you've played in this
event before when it was a ken with How cool
is it now to be on the LPGA Tour as
a rookie? You're back in Cincinnati, you played it, Xavier
had such an illustrious career, and now you're playing in
an event in the town that you went to school in.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Yeah, it feels like I'm coming home in a way.
It's awesome to get back here, and it's somewhat of
a full circle moment for me having played in the
event as a sponsor's invite whenever I was in college
and coming back now as an LPGA Tour member is
really awesome. And getting this opportunity to compete another week
is something that I'm super grateful for.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
Now, these are going to sound like dumb questions, because
that's that's what I do. So, you had an illustrious
collegiate career, played it, Xavier played at Duke, and then
you're on the tour, Like, so how do you how
does how do you go from collegiate golf to now.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
You're a rookie on the LPGA Tour. Walk me through
that path.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
Just a lot of work over the years, really just
putting in the work, practicing hard and knowing that if
I continue to improve every day that I'll reach my goals.
And I still have a lot of goals for myself
and big aspirations, and I'm just going to continue to
work towards them.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Right Yeah, But I mean, like, you know, you don't
just call up the guy who runs the LPGA tour
and go, hey, can I get on board? It doesn't
work that way. So like the time between including college
and now on the tour walked me through some of
the steps you had to take, right.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
I played in Q School following college in the fall,
and then was able to earn epsent Tour status last year.
So I played out on the EPs and tour for
a year and then went back to Q School and
made it through stage two and then in stage three
as well, I birdied five of my last six holes
to earn my LPGA Tour card at the final stage.
So that was pretty awesome to get that done. And
(02:36):
now I've earned the right to be out here, So
it's awesome.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
I love how matter of fact you are about that.
If I ever birdied five out of six holes, you
do not know how I would have a hard time
containing my excitement and you just told it to me
like I was telling you they got my car.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
Washed or something.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
Right. Yeah, it was pretty awesome. I was kind of
in the zone and just kept making Birdie after Birdie.
I knew I need to make something happen if I
wanted to qualify. So it was awesome get to do
that and be out here this year. You're from Texas, yes, sir?
How did you end up in Xavier from Texas? I
played in the US Junior Girls whenever I was in
high school, and that's kind of how I connected with
the coach that was here, Brianna Jenko, and came up
(03:12):
here and went on a visit and really fell in
love with this place, Makatiwa. The facilities that they have
out here as well as the school just kind of
felt like home.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
When you went to Xavier. Obviously you have aspirations to
be on the LPGA Tour, that's your goal, but did
you did you show up at x thinking if I,
if I do what I'm supposed to do and if
I win all these accolades, I will be on the
LPGA Tour. Did you have that as like something that
felt realistic when you started college golf.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
It definitely didn't feel realistic whenever I entered college golf.
When I came here, the expectations were can I make
the lineup? I really didn't know how good I could be.
I knew I had a lot of potential in the sport.
I kind of started a little bit later than some
so I just was gonna work hard and see where
the game took me. I mean, playing on the LPGA
Tour was such a far fetched dream and to be
living that reality pretty cool. But when I came here,
(04:02):
I just wanted to enjoy the experience of college golf
and really had fun with my teammates and enjoyed all
that college golf gave me.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Coach is like barely older than you guys.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
Yeah, I know, she's pretty awesome. She's also accomplished a
lot of things as a coach. It's pretty great.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
And so what is what is a weekend like this?
And maybe it's a little bit different because you're in
a town that you lived in, But what is a
weekend like off the course beyond what we see?
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Yeah, I'm staying with a host this week, a member
here at Macatiwa. They've been pretty generous to open up
their homes, so just off the course, I'm just trying
to enjoy myself, get away from golf. I know my
hosts they actually have two horses, which is pretty cool.
So I've fed the horses a little bit, and they
have two dogs as well, so kind of just when
you stay with the host it feels like a home
(04:47):
away from home. So they've been super generous for us,
and so we've just been hanging out. I know my
San Antonio Spurs they're playing in the playoffs this week,
so yeah, we'll be watching the game on Friday. I
think it is Friday. Yeah, yeah, So just trying and
watch them sports, get away from golf and just enjoy myself.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
Is that hard to do during a weekend when you're
competing to get your mind away from the round you
just played and then the one you want to play tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
It definitely can be. It can be difficult to try
and separate golf from your life because sometimes you feel
like golf encompasses your whole life. But trying to have
that balance of home life and work life can be
pretty important to making sure that you're not all golf, golf,
golf all the time.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
Right Yeah, well that's now walk me through. You ended
up at Duke for a year, and you had a
great season playing at Duke. Why could you stay? Xavier
wouldn't keep you?
Speaker 2 (05:38):
Well, I wanted to kind of grow, see how far
I could grow. Beau Zavery was great for my growth
the three years that I was here and I got
my degree here and I felt like I fulfilled my
obligations and I learned a lot, but I felt like
I still had more to learn. So going to Duke
and pushing myself there, playing against some really great players
and playing in some great tournaments under the head coach
Dan Brooks, who's won so many national championships and has
(06:00):
had such success with players coming out onto the LPGA Tour.
I wanted to kind of learn from them and see
what I could do at Duke, and then that helped
me throughout my professional career.
Speaker 3 (06:12):
Now, wow, that's pretty awesome.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
Well, I'm rooting for you this weekend, and I know
you know you just play it and it's like the
last thing we want to do is sit down and
talk to a a guy like me.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
So no, it's great.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
I appreciate you doing this.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
We're going to be following you this weekend and beyond
and best of luck and congrats. Today was a good round.
I mean, how would you just give me the blanket assessment?
If I shot even par I'd quit like I'm never
going to do better than that.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
How did you? I mean, how would you break down
how you played today?
Speaker 2 (06:38):
I would say it was a good round, but I'm
not satisfied. I got more to I got more to
do throughout the rest of the week, and we're going
to keep pushing and hopefully make some birdies.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Okay, I hope that happens, Yes, sir, thank you much,
very good.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
That's Emma mcmiler from A Xavier and Duke playing this
week in the LPGA event here at Mcinteewah the Kroger
Queen City Championship presented by p G
