The vibe at Big twelve media day is interesting to me,
Interesting to me because it's it's been an off season
unlike any other. Given the Brendan Sorosby situation and two
schools involved, I would imagine that is the dominant topic
of conversation there in Frisco. What is it like?
Speaker 3 (00:36):
Yeah, well, Brett yor Mark was asked about that right
out of the shoot and he said, this is not
today for that, so you really didn't address it. He
did make some general comments about gambling and their partnership
with I think it's IC three sixty and everything that
they've jewing and how important integrity is and all that.
I've been able to talk to a lot of Texas
tech people today. Koyekan is a kid that Cot passes

from Brendan and their spring game a couple of years back.
In that game in Lubbock, he had a handful of
touchdown passes. He's still in touch with him. Talked to
Joey McGuire. He's talked to him recently. I think Brendan
and family had a Florida vacation recently, so that they're.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Keeping in touch.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
I think he said he talked about like three or
four times a week, so they've been positive about it.
One thing that stuck out to me though from McGuire
was when he was up talking about Texas Tech, they're
backup quarterback. He's not half bad now and he doesn't
even think he's a backup. Will Hammond as a kid
that came in for Baron Morton last year against.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Utah and they won that game handily, and he looked really,
really good.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
And McGuire said, if you were to ask Will Hammond
who the starting quarterback is, even when Soarsby was there,
he would have said it's him.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
So and they're looking at him to start the first game.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
So I know you're not asking me about Red Raiders football,
But yeah, I.

Did a couple other interviews with people a belt.

Brendan been all and you know he'll get drafted in
a year and life will go on. But just think
of what kind of a zoo it would have been
if he were here. Yeah, I think that's what he
was facing.

If he were to.

Play, he would have been booed everywhere. I think they
just played one hand too many.

Does it still does? I mean there's look, the big
twelve schools conspired against Texas Tech. There's still pending litigation.
I mean there's a lot going on there. So is
there this feeling of like acrimony and bad blood looming
over the entire event?
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Not really. I mean one guy said something to your market.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
It's like, well, you've banned this from throwing tortillas, but
Oklahoma State has these paddles and they make a lot
of racket and I don't know, you know, when you're
a media member from that town, you kind of have
to play to that crowd. I guess a little bit,
but I haven't noticed it too much. I think Texas
Tech will be up for that game, in every game,
and look, they're gonna good and soort me. They've got

the best defensive player around, the best tight end around.
You know, they still have Cody Campbell and you know
Jed clamp It's got some big bucks and that makes
for a good team.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
The Bearcats, and I know their guys are going to
talk tomorrow. In this era of college football, we don't
have conference preseason polls anymore, perhaps understandably, so anybody that
I ask about the Bearcats, how good are they going
to be? There's no real answer. So do you have one?
Speaker 2 (03:33):
No?
Speaker 3 (03:34):
No, Well, there will be an informal media poll because
they there's a couple of riders that always asked me
to tend them a poll, so something will come out.
I think last year when they did it, they had
U see at number eleven, which was probably the best
showing that they had had. And you look at last year,
you know seven and one going into November, the year

before that five and two going into November. This year,
if you look at the schedule, they really need another
fast art because they're on the road three out of
four games in November and that's not easy. So I
don't want to tell people I've seen Bearcats against Bearcats
in the spring showcase. I think the receivers that they
have gotten in are even better than some of the

ones I've seen. Obviously the offensive line Tengistall, Joe Cotton
that they both made preseason first Seam Big twelve, Taren
tios A Moose. I think they're going to run the
ball successfully. We don't know what Jasey French is going
to do. He's not Brendan Soresby. You know, maybe this
makes things easier for him. The Soresby's off the radar

for a little bit. Maybe, I hope. I mean, I'd
like to have a bit of a summer. I don't
know about you, trying a good vacation time in and
every time I turn around, it's like, well, what do
you know about Brendan Sotoresby? Or I guess now it's
going to be know what do you know about Kirkriesa?
By the way, here comes prime time? Like walking on
to the he was supposed to do a he was
supposed to do a breakout session earlier and he kind

of stiffed everybody.

Oh well, no, nice guy.

I interviewed him a long time ago in Fort Myers
when he was Cincinnati.

Read yeah, well, well we'll send him, send him my best.
Uh what did we learn about j C. French during
spring ball that can be applied to maybe forecasting? Hell
hoh'll do this season?
Speaker 3 (05:21):
I think he was pretty accurate. I think uh Sadderfield
had mentioned that oftentimes he was willing to take the
quick dump and keep the six going rather than going
for broke and you know, going three and out. Not
that Soorsby went three and out a lot, but you know,
he did take some risks. I'm not going to throw
a gambling joke in there. I'll leave let to everybody else.

But but J. C. French, he was very accurate. I
think he runs better than people think.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
Thanks. I think I'm sorry.

And you know, if you look at the last two years,
he actually threw for more yards and Soresby now wasn't
Big twelve competition, but it seems like a pretty good kid.
He's only six to one if that matters. You know,
Zach Klaris was six one, did pretty good. Ben Monk
was six one, did pretty good Scottage football.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
So I think.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
They're going to move the ball on offense. I think
the defense is going to be a lot better with
Nate Woody the defensive coordinator, and they're going to be
more attacking. But you know, we're not going to really
know anything, quite honestly, till late September when Kansas State
comes for the first Big twelve game, because that's just
the way it is.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
You don't really have a grasp on what's going to
go on.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
And then the thing that everybody wants to see is
you see winning games in November. So it hasn't happened
since twenty twenty three when they won at Houston.

I remember that. Well, you mentioned Nate Woody, new defensive coordinator.
They're not playing the three three five anymore. I guess
it's a question along similar lines to the world I
just asked about J C. French. What did springball tell
us about what the Bearcats may be like on that
side of the ball.

They want to attack more, Uh, you know, rush the
quarterback more. I think Antwoine Peak Junior is going to
have a heck of a year because he's really good
at attacking and dismantling the football and finding the football.
I think the defensive backs are even more experienced. You
had two picks. I think in the spring showcase. They
had two picks all season last year. I think Gravy

Johnson had two picks himself. So, yeah, they need more interceptions,
they got to get turnovers and and all that. But
they it appears they have more experience. They don't have
you know Jake Goldey anymore. But I think the linebackers
that they picked up are pretty decent. They picked up
slewer guys from northern Illinois that I think they're going

to be pretty good. And uh Patrick Bauer from Illinois State.
Philip Matcheroski. I think the kid's name is played some rugby.
Those rugby guys are tough.

Oh they don't.

They don't wear pads, So yeah, he looks like a
tough kid. And then you have Jonathan Thompson back and
Simeon Coleman and Brian Simms and so a fair amount
of experience back at linebacker, and the rest were just
kind of waiting and to see. You know, I'd love
to have a crystal ball and tell you what's going
to go on, but heck, i'd be in Vegas if

Last year it felt like bowl game or bust. They
did make a bowl game, it didn't feel like it is.
Is this year being framed as similar?

That's something I'm gonna be asking tomorrow. Last year, when
I talked to John Cunningham, he said, well, we view
this kind of come on around turn three and if
you look at it, you know, Numerica, they've gone from
three wins to five wins to seven wins this year.
If you're looking at that schedule, I'm not sure I
see more than seven wins. I couldn't be wrong, but

I don't know what they have to do to finish.
You know, I think they liked what they have intact.
I think they like the person and department, the general manager.
That they've been able to find some diamonds in the
rough like Jake Goldey and I and uh.

Might saying hi to me Jake Goldey.

You know that they picked from Central Arkansas and also
Jeff Caldwell from London Wood and finding guys like that.
So I think there's a few more of those guys
that they found. But you know, we're just gonna have
to wait and see. I hate saying you know that
I don't know. We have to wait and see. But realistically,
I don't know how people can predict all this stuff.
I mean, Phil Steele does a great job selling magazines,

But how do you know anything in April or May
about college football?
