This is actually an issue that Paul and I had

like this is this is payback. I could see him.

ready to go. He's in the interview room. There's nobody
else in there. He's psyched. I'm psyched. We're gonna talk
with Paul. Bengals had a practice this morning. The weather,
I think the right word is apocalyptic. I mean it was.

I don't know that I've seen skies as dark as
we saw this morning. When we tried to do the
Tony and Moe Training Camp show from practice, and that
lasted about five minutes, the Bengals moved practice up in
order to get some work in outdoors. They still had
to go inside of the practice bubble finished up there,
Paul was in there, we were not. That's okay, And

now they have a preseason game on Thursday.

Can we can we do take two with Paul? Is

You know what we could do is I could ask
Paul questions and he could write them down on a
piece of paper and I could read them for our

But uh, you're you're like on a great delay. This
is just really going well, you're on a delay, so
I don't know, like if there's a long pause, no

for everything to catch up.

You know, we recently sent a bunch of astronauts to
like the Dark Side of the Moon, and so we
couldn't talk to the mission control couldn't talk to those
astronauts for like twenty five minutes or something, and then
when they circled around the moon and got back, they
could communicate with them and the delay was less than
the delay will be as I talked to you from
what you're about seven miles from where I am right now.
Speaker 4 (04:17):
So this is good, This is exciting.

Yeah, I feel like it wouldn't be terrible for me
to actually just send my answers via carrier pigeon up
to you or something like that. We could probably maybe
make it effective. You know what, if they could here
anytime you want to just pick up the phone. Yeah,
I've got it handy in my hand.

If we could get the carrier pigeon sponsored, that might
be how we do things.

Uh, there's a lot to get too. Based on your
coverage of Sunday's practice, I now wish we had been
broadcasting from Sunday's practice.

Yeah. That was the best practice I think, certainly of
this year and the most telling. It was six drives
for the ones versus the ones. True like just go
drive the field, calling it as you go, and we
we were sort of talking to Zach Taylor about that

in the run up to it. He specifically mentioned Sunday,
and look, this is when things change. Things will change
when you see guys having to figure it out on
the fly. Not just okay, you know the script, you
know the play that's coming. It's once you got guys
out there just having to memorize where that you learn
a lot more. And I think we learned a lot more.
(05:36):
And what we learned is that this has a veteran
team that is pretty darn well rounded. Like we saw
that come to fruition. The offense made plays to score
a couple of touchdowns. You saw the defense make plays
in order to get stops. It wasn't mess ups that
were causing. It was both sides making plays, very high
(05:58):
level petition for what you know, practiced nine out there.

You wrote about four winners who have stood out for
one reason or another. Here's one of my favorite things
that unfolds during training camp is there is a guy
who's not a rookie, has been on the team for
a while, but that we spend the entire offseason not
talking about you joined me every Tuesday. With a handful
of exceptions. From the end of last season until right
(06:24):
before training camp started, the name dj Ivy never came up.
But it should have perhaps because now I think we
were learning a little bit more and this is a
good thing about their cornerback depth.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
I mean we have talked a lot about the cornerback
group though, and it was who's it going to be?
And I think what they internally found was there was
a lot of trust around dj Ivy for the way
that he handled the role that he had last year.
And quite honestly, they didn't have a whole lot of
other options to turn to anyway. But I do think
that he's earned it. And then you've seen him come
(06:59):
out here in this camp and been good, been consistent,
been sticky, made plays. He's not showing up getting beat
all the time. And you know, I remember you go
back to dj Ivy's first his rookie camp, seventh round pick.
He had an incredible camp and was like, who's this guy?
He got to find a role for him, and then
(07:21):
his role ended up being largely on special teams. Darren
Simmons really liked him till then he got hurt. And
then last year they put him in the role of
covering these tight ends. He excelled. They didn't have a
tight end catch a pass on him. For a first down.
Like everything they've given him, and it's been small and incremental.
He's done well, and I think they all looked at
each other said, why shouldn't he get the bigger opportunity

right now? He's gotten it. I think he seized it.

What has Josh Newton done, or I guess more specifically,
not done to dig himself so deep into the team's doghouse.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
I mean, flip on the tape, just the tape from
last year. There's no physicality, there's no awareness, there's no
sense of making the plays. You look at some of
the worst plays on last year's tape and he is
around them, you know, like, and you got to be
able to cover better. Like, it just has not come together.

He sounds like he's doing he sounds he says the
right things right like you feel like he's got the
right mentality for it. But when the lights have really
come on, it just hasn't connected.

each side of the ball that you are looking forward
to seeing what they show against Detroit.

I just think they're the most interesting players on this team,
and uh, I think on defense, it's it's hard not
to say Cash is how but I'll I'll pass on
that with an acknowledgement of like, obviously he's gonna be
fun to watch. Tacario Davis has had a really interesting
camp and that it's been low key, Like I don't,

I don't, we haven't. Really you don't see him getting
beat all the time. You've seen You've seen him get
his hands on the ball a couple of times. But
I want to see how he holds up physically. I
want to see how he holds up making plays. I
want to and I want to see his consistency out
there in this game. I would start with that.

Side, okay, and by the way, to Carrio Davis cash
as hell. Like I do feel like with some some
themes that emerge have emerged during camp and then based
on some of the things that Zach Taylor has had
to say, we were lucky enough to have Duke Tobin
on the show with us on Friday. I feel like
the seeds are being planted for a rookie class that
is a pretty good chance of contributing.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
Yeah, contributing when they earn it and not being given
it like last year's was and I think that's the
biggest difference, is that when you have a group that
has to go get it and they have to go
buy people, they can be ready in the wings. It's
a lot different I think for those players mentally than
it is. You're thrown in the fire and you're the

guy immediately, and that obviously was a big I mean,
have fifty three starts by rookies last year, and that's
just there's not a single projected starter in this year's
rookie class in terms of truly starting, and that's such
a difference into where they're at rosterise. And I think
it's different on the pressure that a lot of these
rookies I think feel right now, not that they're not
(11:47):
trying to make impression, trying to make a play, but
it's just a lot different, I think when you know
how urgent that is.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
Joe Burrow and the guys who matter most on offense
are going to be on the field and they'll have
helmets on and pads. I guess they're technically gonna play,
but are they actually gonna really do anything or are
they just gonna kind of wave to fans like they
did on Friday night.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
I think they're gonna play. I mean, I would anticipate
if they're going out there, it's gonna look like it
did last year in Philadelphia. You had two drives, two
touchdown drives, fifteen plays, drop backs, throwing the ball, I
mean down the field. I would think we'll see a
decent amount of their under center stuff just to get
that live reps. And those are also a little safer
(12:32):
on on Burrow. But you know, I don't I don't
put it past them. I mean, after what happened last
year in Washington, I don't know that I have anything
I can say for certain it's gonna go look safe
for anything like that. I think when when Burrow and
his guys get out there, they're gonna they're gonna play
it like it's real.

I'm kind of back to not wanting those guys to
play in the preseason after I championed it last year.
I'm kind of back to wanting those guys to just
wear baseball caps and you know, jerseys without pads.

So I don't know, the curious, The curious next step
is going to be okay, if they have a they're
gonna have a joint practice next Thursday. Will that count
or or will they play in preseason game two or
is this the only game action? Because the Joint Practice
is gonna act for more of what they really need
in terms of the game, and is that the best?

That's kind of the next step. I can see them
obviously playing in this one, but I think it'd be
interesting to see if they kind of use the Joint
Practice as the last box to check to have them
ready for the season.

to say Cash is how but I'll I'll pass on
that with an acknowledgement of like, obviously he's gonna be
fun to watch. Tacario Davis has had a really interesting
camp and that it's been low key, Like I don't,

I don't, we haven't. Really you don't see him getting
beat all the time. You've seen You've seen him get
his hands on the ball a couple of times. But
I want to see how he holds up physically. I
want to see how he holds up making plays. I
want to and I want to see his consistency out
there in this game. I would start with that.

Side, okay, and by the way, to Carrio Davis cash
as hell. Like I do feel like with some some
themes that emerge have emerged during camp and then based
on some of the things that Zach Taylor has had
to say, we were lucky enough to have Duke Tobin
on the show with us on Friday. I feel like
the seeds are being planted for a rookie class that
is a pretty good chance of contributing.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
Yeah, contributing when they earn it and not being given
it like last year's was and I think that's the
biggest difference, is that when you have a group that
has to go get it and they have to go
buy people, they can be ready in the wings. It's
a lot different I think for those players mentally than
it is. You're thrown in the fire and you're the

guy immediately, and that obviously was a big I mean,
have fifty three starts by rookies last year, and that's
just there's not a single projected starter in this year's
rookie class in terms of truly starting, and that's such
a difference into where they're at rosterise. And I think
it's different on the pressure that a lot of these
rookies I think feel right now, not that they're not
(11:47):
trying to make impression, trying to make a play, but
it's just a lot different, I think when you know
how urgent that is.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
Joe Burrow and the guys who matter most on offense
are going to be on the field and they'll have
helmets on and pads. I guess they're technically gonna play,
but are they actually gonna really do anything or are
they just gonna kind of wave to fans like they
did on Friday night.
Speaker 1 (12:08):
I think they're gonna play. I mean, I would anticipate
if they're going out there, it's gonna look like it
did last year in Philadelphia. You had two drives, two
touchdown drives, fifteen plays, drop backs, throwing the ball, I
mean down the field. I would think we'll see a
decent amount of their under center stuff just to get
that live reps. And those are also a little safer
(12:32):
on on Burrow. But you know, I don't I don't
put it past them. I mean, after what happened last
year in Washington, I don't know that I have anything
I can say for certain it's gonna go look safe
for anything like that. I think when when Burrow and
his guys get out there, they're gonna they're gonna play
it like it's real.
Speaker 3 (12:50):
I'm kind of back to not wanting those guys to
play in the preseason after I championed it last year.
I'm kind of back to wanting those guys to just
wear baseball caps and you know, jerseys without pads.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
So I don't know, the curious, The curious next step
is going to be okay, if they have a they're
gonna have a joint practice next Thursday. Will that count
or or will they play in preseason game two or
is this the only game action? Because the Joint Practice
is gonna act for more of what they really need
in terms of the game, and is that the best?
(13:23):
That's kind of the next step. I can see them
obviously playing in this one, but I think it'd be
interesting to see if they kind of use the Joint
Practice as the last box to check to have them
ready for the season.
Speaker 3 (13:33):

who can give us some more accurate weather information.
