all over the Try State, and we've tried to bring
you information as we have it. A lot of the
counties that had tornado warnings are now being issued flash

flood warnings. Kenton, Campbell Boone, Hamilton County's effective until six
forty nine. I seventy one at Robertson Avenue Highway shut down,
there's trees, there's a crash. I'm looking at a still
photo from the seven hundred WLW Twitter account. That doesn't

look good. I don't know that I'm prepared to say
that the worst is behind us, but I am no
longer seeing tornado warnings and that is good. All right.
We've got a few REDS transactions to a pass along.

is going to pitch tonight. He's off the injured list,
makes his first major league start since going on the
injured list with the blister issue that has obviously been
a reoccurring thing, so he's off the injured list. Cincinnati
is also called up Michael Tolia from Louisville, who's the
guy who could play some first and third base, was
with the Reds two years ago. They have transferred Hunter

Green to the sixty day injured list as we know
his season is over. Zach mccambley back to Louisville, Ivan
Johnson back to Louisville as well Reds and White Sox
tonight on the south side of Cincinnati. We've got some
FC Cincinnati stuff we're going to get to a little
bit later on as the Orange and Blue plays another
game of the league's cut trying to advance to the

knockout stage. And we've got some stuff to get to
with our sports legal expert attorney Stewart WD Penrose coming
up in just about twenty five minutes. Today's Bengals practice
was moved indoors about thirty minutes or so in They
worked out until about eleven o'clock. It was the last
practice before the preseason games begin. Zach Taylor talked after

practice and announced that Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase and
t Higgins and Dexter Lawrence are going to play. It's
going to be a few limited series, maybe one series.
Maybe that is the very definition of limited. I can't
think of a topic that we have spent more time
in August discussing in recent years than whether or not
Joe Burrow should play in games that do not count.

And for the majority of his time as the Bengals quarterback,
I have, like many, been opposed to him playing in
the preseason measuring risk versus reward. Do you want to
run the risk of him suffering an injury that's going
to impair his ability to help out when the games
actually count. How much can be gained by it? Do
you go overboard to protect the investment? And I will

admit that with their continued offensive struggles early in the
season that I changed my stance last offseason and it
was fine, let's have these guys play. And if you
remember the first preseason game, Joe Burrow looked terrific nine
of ten, a couple of touchdown passes. Bengals played excuse me,

the Eagles that night. The defense was atrocious. That foreshadowed
how the season was gonna unfold. But I think, like
many to me, at least, Joe playing in the preseason
made sense. I'm not gonna lose my mind over this
because I can understand the argument that, hey, we've gotten
off to a lot of slow starts offensively, let's get

some reps. Yes, there's continuity, but you could always work
on things. I understand it if it was me, and
for the most part, I think we could be glad
that it's not if it was me. I don't think
Joe Burrow would play. I don't think Jamar Chase would play.
I don't think t Higg would play. I don't think
Dexter Lawrence would play. Like number one, there has been

a heightened level of physicality in these practices, certainly a
heightened intensity, and maybe that hasn't been evident in all
of them, but it's been evident in a lot of them,
certainly on Sunday, and so they have ratcheted things up
from a physical perspective during training camp, which might lessen
the need to put some of these guys in a
(04:27):
physical environment of a preseason game, which doesn't count. There's
also this Joe and the starters played two of the
three preseason games. They did not play the last one.
Joe played very well in the first one, and the
second one he played okay, but he was under duress.
The one thing the Bengals seem to have going for
(04:49):
them right now is health. Now I say the one thing.
There's a lot of things, so maybe I should correct myself,
but one of the things, maybe the biggest thing the
Bengals have going for themselves right now, is health. It
doesn't mean they've gotten through Trina Camp totally unscathed. Obviously,
Shamar Stewart's hurt. Bj Hill hasn't practiced yet. They're dealing
with some soft tissue issues with Brian Cook and Dax Hill,

neither of which right now at least seem to be
a huge deal. But the one thing this team has
going for it right now that might matter more than
anything is health. They have a good roster. We're talking
a lot about their rookie class. Cash is how to
Caaro Davis players like that, because it feels like the
Bengals have this sort of team that isn't going to

ask the world of those guys. They're not asking Cash
is how to step in and be transformative. They're asking
him to step in and contribute. So far, he looks capable.
Same to a degree for Tacario Davis. This team's healthy,
comparatively speaking, healthy. I sit here every afternoon and I

listen to the top of hour updates on ESPN Radio,
and it feels like every afternoon I'm hearing the anchor
mention another injury around the NFL. The Bengals will deal
with injuries this season. It's football. They're unavoidable. But at times, man,
what stands out more than anything else isn't so much
your talent top to bottom. It's how healthy is your

talent top to bottom. In twenty fifteen, the Bengals won
twelve games. Terrific team. Terrific team, didn't advance in the
postseason obviously, but really good roster. I think you could argue,
top to bottom the best roster they've had this century. Yes,
the twenty twenty two and maybe twenty twenty six teams
will have something to say about that. But you want
to know what I remember most about that year in
(06:37):
the regular season, at least in early November, with the
Bengals having zero losses, reading the injury report and it
taking two seconds because there was nobody on it with
that team, When did things start to unravel when guys
started to get hurt. Also, if you go back to
(06:57):
last season offensively for the Bengals, Joe Burrow played, how
did the offense look in the first regular season game?
Completely and totally uneven, Which would suggest that there's maybe
not a huge correlation between having the guys who matter
most play in the preseason and having them ready to
hit the ground running once the regular season starts. I
(07:19):
wouldn't have Joe Burrow play. I wouldn't have the guys
who matter most play. And we always watch these games,
you know, maybe holding our hands up to our face
and watching peeking through our fingers. I'm actually physically doing
that right now for folks watching on YouTube and Twitter,
you hold your breath, don't you like? The vibes are
great right now. Players seem to be dialed in. Team
(07:42):
collectively seems to have an edge. I think there's a
renewed energy and enthusiasm for who the guys the front
office is brought in. The one thing that can just
dump well rain buckets of cold water likek into what
we're getting today. On the UASM, on the optimism, maybe

on their hopes to win a championship, would be an injury,
a significant injury, maybe multiple. If you understand they're gonna
happen anyway. You get it right. It's football. You incur
some risk, but in the regular season, the reward is
you're trying to win games that matter. In the preseason
not so much. I wouldn't have these guys play. I
get it, man, the recent track record of not starting

off great, I get it fine. But you would like
to think that an offense that has enjoyed continuity with
an NFL coach in his eighth season, partnered with the
same quarterback for the last seven can figure out ways
to use the preseason, and more importantly, use training camp
practices and the months leading up to the season, and

use them to put together an offense that has a
better chance of competing once the real games actually begin
that don't involve unnecessarily throwing your quarterback in harm's way.
Joe is gonna play if he plays. I hope he
plays well, but I wouldn't have him play at all.

had a delay on Friday night, but after the delay,
I saw a FC Cincinnati team Steve that looked as
balanced as they've looked all year long, and that is
really scary for the remainder of the field in League's Cup.
It's really scary for the rest of Major League Soccer
as well.

Yeah, I mean the shutout is nice, right, It's the
first clean sheet that they've earned in seventeen games in
all competitions. And Pat Noonan quite frankly told us he
thought they were better defensively in the first game of
this tournament when they defeated Pachuca, So there's a lot
finally going right on that end of the field for them.

I still think this is the most dangerous team top
to bottom, just in terms of ability of banging in goals. Mo,
I'd be surprised if they don't score multiple goals again tonight.
They're just all in such great form. The question is
what is enough for them, because there are a couple
of nightmare scenarios where they win this game, go three

to zero, and still don't go to the quarterfinals. I
don't think that's going to happen, but the mathematical possibility
does exist because they're one of six teams that have
been perfect so far from MLS, so only four go
to the quarter.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
Fiveal I tried to do this an outline of before
and then my head started to hurt. Can you outline
some of those potential nightmare scenarios?
Speaker 4 (12:00):
Well, right now you have got six MLS teams on
six points. They've won those games that they have played
through the first two match days. What if all six
win again, Well, that means that the top four teams
with goal differential would go. Right now, Cincinnati is sitting
(12:20):
in a nice place at plus four, but we don't
know what else is going to happen. Look, I think
they're in a great spot. Let me be very clear
about that, because even if they don't clinch with a win, tonight,
and there is a scenario by which they can do
that this evening. A lot of the other teams that
are undefeated, Dallas, Chicago, Austin later in the week mo
they have very difficult games. Dallas has to travel to Teluca,

Chicago has to play Cruz Azul, which is possibly the
best team in the tournament, and Austin has to play
Club America, which in my opinion is the best team
in the tournament. It's sitting there for Cincinnati, I'd be
surprised if we have this conversation next week if we're
not talking about them still alive in this tournament. But
there's work to do.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
There is against an Atlas FC team that has already
been eliminated from this competition. And so that's part of
the mystery, because you know, number one, how much collectively
will that team have turned its attention to lega MX play.
And then number two, who's going to be on the
field for him tonight.

Yeah, that's the tricky thing because he has two games
of video to work with of Atlas in this tournament,
and most of it might be irrelevant in terms of
preparing for this match. They are managed by one of
the great Argentine players of his generation, Hernan Crespo, who
actually said, look, we're playing for pride, but some are
playing for opportunity. Now, keep something in mind. If you

see a lot of these kids for Atlas on the
field tonight wearing numbers like one hundred and eighty seven,
as their academy players are known to wear, they pride
themselves Atlas on the academy, and a lot of those
graduates of their academy, I'll use that word graduate just
as it fits with the conversation we're having, have gone

on to play for some of the bigger clubs in
Mexico and some of the bigger clubs around the world.
So there's talent on the field. Don't look at this
game tonight as a layup. Cincinnati is a prohibitive favorite,
but leave it at that. If they don't play well,
they might be in for a big surprise.

How would you assess the I was going to say
that the current league's cup field. Obviously we have teams
that are still playing hoping to move on that will not.
But how do you handicap the way things may unfold
based on how things have happened so far?
Speaker 5 (14:36):
I was in.

Portland on Sunday night, and Club America to me look
like the best team that I've seen so far. Now
I can change my mind between now and when the
quarterfinals begin. MLS teams are at a stranglehold on this
tournament to the point mo where it's kind of embarrassing
for the Mexican Federation and Lega MCHIS. Last year there

wasn't even a single team from Leiga Mekis to reach
the semifinals. The whole point of this tournament is to
match the very best of MLS against the very best
of the league in Mexico, and we've been cheated out
of that so many times in the last few years.
In the late stages of this tournament, I don't think
that's gonna happen again because I think the two best

teams in the tournament are on the Lega mch East
side of the table, and that's Club America and Cruiz Azuol. Beatable, yes,
but on form they would be favorites. In my mind.
Maybe this is the year they finally break through.

a large truck that's trying to weave its way through
all of it. I certainly am hopeful, as we all

start by talking about my favorite story involving the law

I'm disappointed in BUCkies. I love BUCkies. But yes, I

I will admit that I'm not like I'm not like
the world's biggest BUCkies fan because when I when I

to go into a Mini Mart. But but that's okay. So,
but BUCkies is suing this Mini Mart in beaver Creek
because this Mini Mart in Beaver Creek I guess has
a beaver logo as well on instore. So BUCkies is

you know, they're they're pursuing litigation, I guess. And this
reminds me of a story that unfolded about a year
and a half ago involving the University of Cincinnati and
a middle school in Tennessee. Are the two stories similar.

Yes, they are. The UC one was a little bit
more blatant because the school was, you know, using UC logos.
You know, they call themselves the Bearcats, which is one thing,
but they're using the trademark you see logos, and it's
pretty cut and dry, you know. You see, it gave
him a season desist, and from what I understand, they
changed their name and rebranded their name and their logos.

I mean, we've all seen, you know, youth teams and
different high schools and different types of schools you know,
have pro you know, pro and college team name and logos,
but those are typically part of a licensing agreement. You see.
They didn't have that. Here's the Bucky situation. Moh, you've
seen the logo, haven't you.

Yes, I don't think it's very similar to the Buckies' logo.

Not in the least. No, not in the least. You

really letting people down here. This is not good for

that is a little bit more closely related to sports.
So we've talked about the Protect College Sports Act. So
the Senate couldn't get it done, failed to reach a

vote during an all night pre recess session, and the
Senate ended this weekend. So now they've got a pun
it to next month. Uh. I know, we've talked a
lot about this piece of legislation. What's next for it?
Speaker 5 (22:33):
Well, it goes through December or if you're not December September,
so it's not dead. But you know, the big horror hurdle,
like anything else in Congress, is you know, getting enough
bipartisanship with you know, agreement on the details, you know,
the athlete compensation transfer restrictions in I L you know,
what have you. You know, it's got to get enough
votes to pass the Senate, and it's got to go
(22:54):
through the House and you know, to come out of
the House with a different version. Who knows, and we
all know that Congress they'd host a filibuster on you know,
picking a pizza pizza toppings. They don't agree on anything.
So you know, hopefully something can get done here. College
sports desperately desperately needs it, and everybody agrees that there's
(23:15):
a problem, but good luck on agreeing on the solution.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
Yeah. So I guess if this fails, we go down
the road of more of the higher likelihood of conference
self governance. Would you agree.
Speaker 5 (23:28):
Absolutely? I mean, for the time being, we would continue
the Wild West, but you know the conferences, Yeah, they
would have increased and looked to govern themselves, you know,
on revenue sharing, eligibility, compensation. But the problem with that
is you can get a big competitive balance problem where
you're you know, you're potentially running different versions of college athletics.
I'll under the NCAA umbrella. You know, it makes me think,
(23:50):
you know, when do the big thing in the SEC
say well screw it, We're just going to break off
and do our own thing. You know, does this lead
to the Super Conference? You know, very possible.

This is a story that you and I have not
touched on, but is interesting. Nonetheless, so the NBA is
looking into allegations that the Los Angeles Clippers used some
of their corporate sponsors to funnel money to Kawhi Leonard,
which would basically circumvent the league's salary cap. And so
(24:26):
a law firm has been retained to investigate the Clippers.
A trade between LA and the Toronto Raptors is on
hold until this investigation concludes. Walk me through here what
the burden of proof would have to be for the
NBA to enact punishments against the Clippers, and by extension
Kawhi Leonard.
Speaker 5 (24:46):
Well, most not a criminal prosecution. They don't have to
prove a case, you know, beyond a reasonable doubt or
anything like that. You know, the NBA simply is enforcing
their CBA and their league rules. You know the you
know the teams and NBA personnel. You know, by being
part of the NBA, they have to sign up to
be subject to all that, and you know, the league
and the Commission. They've got very substantial investigative authority and
(25:09):
disciplinary authority under the CBA. They can consider circumstantial evidence emails, texts,
financial records, agreements, different communications. They don't have to go
through subpoenas and search for us. You know, if you
if you're part of the NBA, you have to cooperate
(25:30):
with their investigations.
Speaker 2 (25:32):
So if his contract gets avoided, what happens to money
that he's already been paid? What does his free agency
status look like? What legal avenues could the union use
to fight on his behalf? I know, I just asked
you three questions, so go ahead and wrap them all
into one.
Speaker 5 (25:46):
Answer, Well, well, thank you, mo I appreciate that to
be determined. With all that, you know, it can get
very very messy. You know, the Players Association is not
going to want a big time tracked to be unwound.
They're they're they'll try to fight it and you know,
go through the arbitration process, the appeals process with that.
(26:09):
You know, the NBA they could secret payment of the
improperly paid compensation. It's not that that'ssarily the same thing
as give us back every single dollar you ever earned,
you that you're earned in the NBA. But yes, this
could get very very messy. Could they determine that he's
a free agent and he's he's free to sign with
another team. You know, perhaps the Players Association I want
(26:30):
to push for that, but you know you would imagine
me and be able to want to suspend him and
you know, perhaps saying that he's you know, contractually still
bound with the Clippers or you know, subject to some
other restrictions. So it could get very messy, and you know,
we'll have to see how it all plays out, all.

Right, he La Kawhi Leonard might have the lawyer up
if if I need a lawyer who do I call?

Oh, call them an a little law group. But five one,

about the traffic and the weather and how how gruesome
it is out there today. Everybody be up there and

was moved indoors about thirty minutes or so in They
worked out until about eleven o'clock. It was the last
practice before the preseason games begin. Zach Taylor talked after

practice and announced that Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase and
t Higgins and Dexter Lawrence are going to play. It's
going to be a few limited series, maybe one series.
Maybe that is the very definition of limited. I can't
think of a topic that we have spent more time
in August discussing in recent years than whether or not
Joe Burrow should play in games that do not count.

And for the majority of his time as the Bengals quarterback,
I have, like many, been opposed to him playing in
the preseason measuring risk versus reward. Do you want to
run the risk of him suffering an injury that's going
to impair his ability to help out when the games
actually count. How much can be gained by it? Do
you go overboard to protect the investment? And I will

admit that with their continued offensive struggles early in the
season that I changed my stance last offseason and it
was fine, let's have these guys play. And if you
remember the first preseason game, Joe Burrow looked terrific nine
of ten, a couple of touchdown passes. Bengals played excuse me,

the Eagles that night. The defense was atrocious. That foreshadowed
how the season was gonna unfold. But I think, like
many to me, at least, Joe playing in the preseason
made sense. I'm not gonna lose my mind over this
because I can understand the argument that, hey, we've gotten
off to a lot of slow starts offensively, let's get
(03:41):
some reps. Yes, there's continuity, but you could always work
on things. I understand it if it was me, and
for the most part, I think we could be glad
that it's not if it was me. I don't think
Joe Burrow would play. I don't think Jamar Chase would play.
I don't think t Higg would play. I don't think
Dexter Lawrence would play. Like number one, there has been
(04:05):
a heightened level of physicality in these practices, certainly a
heightened intensity, and maybe that hasn't been evident in all
of them, but it's been evident in a lot of them,
certainly on Sunday, and so they have ratcheted things up
from a physical perspective during training camp, which might lessen
the need to put some of these guys in a
(04:27):
physical environment of a preseason game, which doesn't count. There's
also this Joe and the starters played two of the
three preseason games. They did not play the last one.
Joe played very well in the first one, and the
second one he played okay, but he was under duress.
The one thing the Bengals seem to have going for
(04:49):
them right now is health. Now I say the one thing.
There's a lot of things, so maybe I should correct myself,
but one of the things, maybe the biggest thing the
Bengals have going for themselves right now, is health. It
doesn't mean they've gotten through Trina Camp totally unscathed. Obviously,
Shamar Stewart's hurt. Bj Hill hasn't practiced yet. They're dealing
with some soft tissue issues with Brian Cook and Dax Hill,

neither of which right now at least seem to be
a huge deal. But the one thing this team has
going for it right now that might matter more than
anything is health. They have a good roster. We're talking
a lot about their rookie class. Cash is how to
Caaro Davis players like that, because it feels like the
Bengals have this sort of team that isn't going to
(05:33):
ask the world of those guys. They're not asking Cash
is how to step in and be transformative. They're asking
him to step in and contribute. So far, he looks capable.
Same to a degree for Tacario Davis. This team's healthy,
comparatively speaking, healthy. I sit here every afternoon and I
(05:53):
listen to the top of hour updates on ESPN Radio,
and it feels like every afternoon I'm hearing the anchor
mention another injury around the NFL. The Bengals will deal
with injuries this season. It's football. They're unavoidable. But at times, man,
what stands out more than anything else isn't so much
your talent top to bottom. It's how healthy is your
(06:15):
talent top to bottom. In twenty fifteen, the Bengals won
twelve games. Terrific team. Terrific team, didn't advance in the
postseason obviously, but really good roster. I think you could argue,
top to bottom the best roster they've had this century. Yes,
the twenty twenty two and maybe twenty twenty six teams
will have something to say about that. But you want
to know what I remember most about that year in
(06:37):
the regular season, at least in early November, with the
Bengals having zero losses, reading the injury report and it
taking two seconds because there was nobody on it with
that team, When did things start to unravel when guys
started to get hurt. Also, if you go back to
(06:57):
last season offensively for the Bengals, Joe Burrow played, how
did the offense look in the first regular season game?
Completely and totally uneven, Which would suggest that there's maybe
not a huge correlation between having the guys who matter
most play in the preseason and having them ready to
hit the ground running once the regular season starts. I
(07:19):
wouldn't have Joe Burrow play. I wouldn't have the guys
who matter most play. And we always watch these games,
you know, maybe holding our hands up to our face
and watching peeking through our fingers. I'm actually physically doing
that right now for folks watching on YouTube and Twitter,
you hold your breath, don't you like? The vibes are
great right now. Players seem to be dialed in. Team
(07:42):
collectively seems to have an edge. I think there's a
renewed energy and enthusiasm for who the guys the front
office is brought in. The one thing that can just
dump well rain buckets of cold water likek into what
we're getting today. On the UASM, on the optimism, maybe
(08:02):
on their hopes to win a championship, would be an injury,
a significant injury, maybe multiple. If you understand they're gonna
happen anyway. You get it right. It's football. You incur
some risk, but in the regular season, the reward is
you're trying to win games that matter. In the preseason
not so much. I wouldn't have these guys play. I
get it, man, the recent track record of not starting
(08:23):
off great, I get it fine. But you would like
to think that an offense that has enjoyed continuity with
an NFL coach in his eighth season, partnered with the
same quarterback for the last seven can figure out ways
to use the preseason, and more importantly, use training camp
practices and the months leading up to the season, and
(08:46):
use them to put together an offense that has a
better chance of competing once the real games actually begin
that don't involve unnecessarily throwing your quarterback in harm's way.
Joe is gonna play if he plays. I hope he
plays well, but I wouldn't have him play at all.

Yeah, I mean the shutout is nice, right, It's the
first clean sheet that they've earned in seventeen games in
all competitions. And Pat Noonan quite frankly told us he
thought they were better defensively in the first game of

finally going right on that end of the field for them.

I still think this is the most dangerous team top
to bottom, just in terms of ability of banging in goals. Mo,
I'd be surprised if they don't score multiple goals again tonight.
They're just all in such great form. The question is
what is enough for them, because there are a couple
of nightmare scenarios where they win this game, go three

to zero, and still don't go to the quarterfinals. I
don't think that's going to happen, but the mathematical possibility
does exist because they're one of six teams that have
been perfect so far from MLS, so only four go
to the quarter.

Fiveal I tried to do this an outline of before
and then my head started to hurt. Can you outline
some of those potential nightmare scenarios?
Speaker 4 (12:00):
Well, right now you have got six MLS teams on
six points. They've won those games that they have played
through the first two match days. What if all six
win again, Well, that means that the top four teams
with goal differential would go. Right now, Cincinnati is sitting
(12:20):
in a nice place at plus four, but we don't
know what else is going to happen. Look, I think
they're in a great spot. Let me be very clear
about that, because even if they don't clinch with a win, tonight,
and there is a scenario by which they can do
that this evening. A lot of the other teams that
are undefeated, Dallas, Chicago, Austin later in the week mo
they have very difficult games. Dallas has to travel to Teluca,
(12:44):
Chicago has to play Cruz Azul, which is possibly the
best team in the tournament, and Austin has to play
Club America, which in my opinion is the best team
in the tournament. It's sitting there for Cincinnati, I'd be
surprised if we have this conversation next week if we're
not talking about them still alive in this tournament. But
there's work to do.

There is against an Atlas FC team that has already
been eliminated from this competition. And so that's part of
the mystery, because you know, number one, how much collectively
will that team have turned its attention to lega MX play.
And then number two, who's going to be on the
field for him tonight.

Yeah, that's the tricky thing because he has two games
of video to work with of Atlas in this tournament,
and most of it might be irrelevant in terms of
preparing for this match. They are managed by one of
the great Argentine players of his generation, Hernan Crespo, who
actually said, look, we're playing for pride, but some are
playing for opportunity. Now, keep something in mind. If you

see a lot of these kids for Atlas on the
field tonight wearing numbers like one hundred and eighty seven,
as their academy players are known to wear, they pride
themselves Atlas on the academy, and a lot of those
graduates of their academy, I'll use that word graduate just
as it fits with the conversation we're having, have gone

on to play for some of the bigger clubs in
Mexico and some of the bigger clubs around the world.
So there's talent on the field. Don't look at this
game tonight as a layup. Cincinnati is a prohibitive favorite,
but leave it at that. If they don't play well,
they might be in for a big surprise.

How would you assess the I was going to say
that the current league's cup field. Obviously we have teams
that are still playing hoping to move on that will not.
But how do you handicap the way things may unfold
based on how things have happened so far?
Speaker 5 (14:36):
I was in.

Portland on Sunday night, and Club America to me look
like the best team that I've seen so far. Now
I can change my mind between now and when the
quarterfinals begin. MLS teams are at a stranglehold on this
tournament to the point mo where it's kind of embarrassing
for the Mexican Federation and Lega MCHIS. Last year there

wasn't even a single team from Leiga Mekis to reach
the semifinals. The whole point of this tournament is to
match the very best of MLS against the very best
of the league in Mexico, and we've been cheated out
of that so many times in the last few years.
In the late stages of this tournament, I don't think
that's gonna happen again because I think the two best

teams in the tournament are on the Lega mch East
side of the table, and that's Club America and Cruiz Azuol. Beatable, yes,
but on form they would be favorites. In my mind.
Maybe this is the year they finally break through.

reminds me of a story that unfolded about a year
and a half ago involving the University of Cincinnati and
a middle school in Tennessee. Are the two stories similar.

more blatant because the school was, you know, using UC logos.
You know, they call themselves the Bearcats, which is one thing,
but they're using the trademark you see logos, and it's
pretty cut and dry, you know. You see, it gave
him a season desist, and from what I understand, they
changed their name and rebranded their name and their logos.

I mean, we've all seen, you know, youth teams and
different high schools and different types of schools you know,
have pro you know, pro and college team name and logos,
but those are typically part of a licensing agreement. You see.
They didn't have that. Here's the Bucky situation. Moh, you've

the Senate couldn't get it done, failed to reach a

vote during an all night pre recess session, and the
Senate ended this weekend. So now they've got a pun
it to next month. Uh. I know, we've talked a
lot about this piece of legislation. What's next for it?
Speaker 5 (22:33):
Well, it goes through December or if you're not December September,
so it's not dead. But you know, the big horror hurdle,
like anything else in Congress, is you know, getting enough
bipartisanship with you know, agreement on the details, you know,
the athlete compensation transfer restrictions in I L you know,
what have you. You know, it's got to get enough
votes to pass the Senate, and it's got to go
(22:54):
through the House and you know, to come out of
the House with a different version. Who knows, and we
all know that Congress they'd host a filibuster on you know,
picking a pizza pizza toppings. They don't agree on anything.
So you know, hopefully something can get done here. College
sports desperately desperately needs it, and everybody agrees that there's
(23:15):
a problem, but good luck on agreeing on the solution.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
Yeah. So I guess if this fails, we go down
the road of more of the higher likelihood of conference
self governance. Would you agree.
Speaker 5 (23:28):
Absolutely? I mean, for the time being, we would continue
the Wild West, but you know the conferences, Yeah, they
would have increased and looked to govern themselves, you know,
on revenue sharing, eligibility, compensation. But the problem with that
is you can get a big competitive balance problem where
you're you know, you're potentially running different versions of college athletics.
I'll under the NCAA umbrella. You know, it makes me think,
(23:50):
you know, when do the big thing in the SEC
say well screw it, We're just going to break off
and do our own thing. You know, does this lead
to the Super Conference? You know, very possible.

Attorney Stewart W. Penrose from the Manilo Law Group is

This is a story that you and I have not
touched on, but is interesting. Nonetheless, so the NBA is
looking into allegations that the Los Angeles Clippers used some
of their corporate sponsors to funnel money to Kawhi Leonard,
which would basically circumvent the league's salary cap. And so
(24:26):
a law firm has been retained to investigate the Clippers.
A trade between LA and the Toronto Raptors is on
hold until this investigation concludes. Walk me through here what
the burden of proof would have to be for the
NBA to enact punishments against the Clippers, and by extension
Kawhi Leonard.
Speaker 5 (24:46):
Well, most not a criminal prosecution. They don't have to
prove a case, you know, beyond a reasonable doubt or
anything like that. You know, the NBA simply is enforcing
their CBA and their league rules. You know the you
know the teams and NBA personnel. You know, by being
part of the NBA, they have to sign up to
be subject to all that, and you know, the league
and the Commission. They've got very substantial investigative authority and
(25:09):
disciplinary authority under the CBA. They can consider circumstantial evidence emails, texts,
financial records, agreements, different communications. They don't have to go
through subpoenas and search for us. You know, if you
if you're part of the NBA, you have to cooperate
(25:30):
with their investigations.
Speaker 2 (25:32):
So if his contract gets avoided, what happens to money
that he's already been paid? What does his free agency
status look like? What legal avenues could the union use
to fight on his behalf? I know, I just asked
you three questions, so go ahead and wrap them all
into one.

Answer, Well, well, thank you, mo I appreciate that to

very very messy. You know, the Players Association is not
going to want a big time tracked to be unwound.
They're they're they'll try to fight it and you know,
go through the arbitration process, the appeals process with that.

You know, the NBA they could secret payment of the
improperly paid compensation. It's not that that'ssarily the same thing
as give us back every single dollar you ever earned,
you that you're earned in the NBA. But yes, this
could get very very messy. Could they determine that he's
a free agent and he's he's free to sign with
another team. You know, perhaps the Players Association I want

to push for that, but you know you would imagine
me and be able to want to suspend him and
you know, perhaps saying that he's you know, contractually still
bound with the Clippers or you know, subject to some
other restrictions. So it could get very messy, and you know,
we'll have to see how it all plays out, all.
