training camp practice. I do want to say this. We
were on the air Friday afternoon slash evening from the
home broadcast booth. And you know, the original plan was
we would do a three hour show and the Bengals
would have a practice inside the stadium from six until
eight o'clock. And weather had other plans, and so they

moved the majority of the practice indoors, got some work done,
then came out and ran the last third, last twenty
five percent of their practice for the fans who had
stuck around. Number one, I was amazed at the number
of people who hung around, through rain, through nothing really

(02:35):
going on while the team was practicing indoors. And I
do think it's cool because Zach Taylor could have put
the kibosh on it. I think it's cool the team
in the middle of its practice jumped on a couple
of buses, came down to the stadium and finished the practice,
So good on them. Good on them for doing that again. Man,
I'd be okay if Burrow didn't play. I just I

think you could come up with if you're an experience
head coach with an offense that enjoys continuity, and an
experienced quarterback, to come up with ways to function. And
by the way, their defense is supposed to be better.
The idea is for the Bengals to not have to
score forty points every single week to win. So what
the Bengals have going for it right now is health.

That is their advantage, and hopefully it's their advantage all
season long. I would do everything I could to protect
that advantage. Mean, while the Reds boy late last week,
you know you could feel it, right, folks, And I
wasn't there. I admitted it on this show. I wasn't
there yet. And I don't know what it would have

taken for me to get there. Maybe it would have
been the team getting over five hundred. Maybe it would
have been them leapfrogging another team. Maybe it would have
been climbing to within, you know, two games of the
last wild card. But they sweep the A's and like,
you could hear the murmurs of optimism. I hear for it, man,

piece wondering can they make a run? Andrew Abbott after
that last game against the A's was talking about we
think we can make a run. You know, if the
folks on social media were saying things like seither that
the team is excited about the fact that they didn't
really make any major moves. They didn't want to be

they went. I take no delight in this, but they
get swept in Washington, which you cannot do. The Washington
Nationals front office said that team is no good by
being sellers at the deadline. The Reds went there and
scored six runs. One of the more remarkable things about
this team this year is how the offense has gone
in the opposite direction of last year's offense. Because what

do we all talk about at the end of last year,
got to hit more home runs, got to hit more
home runs, Need more guys who can hit the ball
out of the ballpark. What's amazing about this season is
the Reds are homering more. They are homering more than
they did last season. The Cincinnati Reds this year have

one hundred and fifty four home runs. Now, that doesn't
lead all of Major League Baseball, but it's a it's
not that bad. Right now, the Reds are fifth in
baseball and home runs fifth. Last year's team and I,
as you could hear the computer mouse click in the background,

I'm doing this kind of at the top of my head.
They had one hundred and sixty seventh, they were thirty
twenty nine, eight, twenty seven, six twenty first in baseball.
But last year's team scored four point four to two
runs per game. This year's team, despite hitting more home runs,

is averaging four point one to two. They're scoring more
frequently per game despite hitting more home runs. This weekend,
the Red score six runs. One of them came not
via a homer. Now we want home runs. Home runs
are a good thing. Anybody who tells you home runs
are a bad thing, don't listen to him. But there

is the goal, or one of the goals for the offseason.
Find a way to construct an offense that can a
continue to hit home runs, b ensure the home runs
come with more guys on base and c score in
ways that don't involve home runs. It doesn't have to
be either or it isn't either, or at least for

the better teams in this sport, it doesn't have to
be hit home runs or don't hit home runs. It
should be you got guys who can hit the ball
out of the ballpark. Ellie sal Stewart, I don't think
he's going to be here next year. By a Juhaneo Suarez,
J J. Bleda, Spencer Steer what he's healthy, hits more
than twenty every single season. Might not have a guy

who leads the plan in homers. But like you got
to have a lot of guys who can hit the
ball out of the ballpark. That's cool. Need more guys
who can get on base in front of them, and
they have been atrocious at that this year. It is
striking how the offense has gone in the complete and
total opposite direction from what it was last year, where
it felt like, boy, if they're not stringing three hits together,

they can't score. Now it feels like if they don't
get home runs, they can't score. How do you blend
the two? How do you mesh the two? That might
be item number one a top Nick Krawl's to do
list for twenty twenty seven, or maybe a top the
to do list for whoever maybe replaces Nick Krawl before

the twenty twenty seven season. We've been up to our
eyeballs and Bengals stuff, and we did a four hour
and forty five minute Bengals show on Friday, and then
we had a weekend and I was off yesterday. We
haven't had a ton of time to talk about Hunter Green,
and the Hunter Green thing is what it is not

gonna pitch this year. Don't know if he's going to
pitch next year, don't know when he pitches again if
he'll be effective, Like I view Hunter Green as almost
not even a part of the Cincinnati Reds because how
do you plan on him doing anything for you in
twenty twenty seven, which leaves a major hole because the
one thing you thought they would have is a core

of guys moving into next year that they could build around.
Now that core isn't as big. But there's something that
you should really hope doesn't happen that coming up in
about fifteen minutes, and one of the best bargains in

felt like he was I felt like he's sort of
you know, encapsulated. Was able to capture for the viewers
at home on channel It was on Channel five what
was happening with the tree falling down on that street

and Hyde Park and then there's been a storm damage
all over the place. So again, hopefully your home in
your neighborhood are maybe like.

calendar is unfolding. But I made a vow that if
school starts before August fifteenth, like it did last year,
my kid is not going Mike. When you were a kid,
did you go school shopping? No, you didn't have to

go buy school supplies, all right. When I was a kid,
you'd have to go buy school supplies, and so so
that meant like you would get a couple of notebooks,
maybe a few folders, and some pencils, maybe a lunch box. Right,
my kid went school shopping with my wife last week.

There's a trunk full of stuff. Why does she need
six glue sticks? Why do we need four rolls of tape?
Why do we need dry erase markers? And eighty eight
different colors of pencils? As like a trunk full of stuff?
I thought we were buying school supplies for like the
entire class bags of stuff. She's in the fourth grade.

Our office supply closet doesn't have that much stuff. What
do we need glue sticks for? Well?

How much did that getting it for?

It wasn't cheap. School supplies are not cheap. And when
I remember being a kid, you would buy some of
that stuff, and you were all gung ho about it,
Like the first week, you never used half of it.
I'd get to the end of the year and it's
like all these folders I never used because I just
stuck everything into one folder like a trunk. Little stuff.
Were back to school. The list of items they suggest

you buy was a page and a half long. What
are we doing?

Like? Great? Now, I might have went and got some
things after my well probably my dad was always working,
but my mom, I'm sure when, or my aunt. But
I would always go and pick up the two things
on the side. And maybe it was my allowance or whatever.
But that's crazy.

A trunk full, trunk full. Yes, yeah, it's hard.

Okay, if you need it, if your workplace needs any
office supplies, call my kids. She probably has it.

I did. They not using slide rules anymore. Well, she's
in a fort gait. She wouldn't be up to slide yet. No,
I heard the most sports jokes aren't that funny to me,
unless like there's some of the old Yogi Vara sl
slogans and stuff. But I heard one two days ago.
I got to share it with you. It's a thirty
second joke, it's clean as a whistle good. There's two

MLB players that are really close friends, and what they
make a pack If one of us goes before the
other guy, you got to try to figure out a
way to let me know if there's baseball in heaven.
So they shake on it. So a couple of years past,
sure enough, one guy falls out. So he comes around

eventually and talks to his buddy in the ghost form
or whatever, and he says, so, well, what's what says
there baseball? Often he said, well, I got good news
and bad news. The good news is there is baseball
in heaven. The bad news is you're scheduled to pitch
on start on Thursday.

it takes a lot to make me laugh because I'm

part so far of the Dexter Lawrence experience is how
it started in Cincinnati where he gets traded to the
Bengals on a Saturday. He comes to town and takes
his physical. On Sunday, he meets with the media on Monday,
and I don't think it's an insignificant thing at all
that instead of and you could excuse him for this,

it was day one of the voluntary workouts. You would
have understood I would have had he said, look, I
just got traded. I got to go make sure everything's
cool with my family and get things in order and
give me a day or two instead, Uh huh, let's go.
Let's get to work day one. The tone he has
set in training camp, like, there's lots of ins and

outs to talk about. But on Friday, Tony and I
were in the stadium doing our show and the Bengals
finally were able to move indoors watching Dexter, Lawrence just
basically shove and did it in a way where you
never felt like Joe Burrow was gonna get hurt, but
like just exerts his will on Ted Carris and basically

pushes him into Joe Burrow. Every single day. That dude
has set a tone every single day, and he's taken
some days off, but when he is out there, he's
going full throttle. It is something to watch, and the
trickle down effect maybe at that position has been impressive too.
Jonathan Allen has looked great. TJ. Slayton had a really
good practice the last day we were there on the

practice fields last week Wednesday, Thursday, whenever that was. And
then you look at it financially. I bring this up
because Quinn Williams and the Dallas Cowboys have agreed to
a contract that's going to make him the second highest
paid a defensive tackle in the sport. When you look
at the average annual value thirty five point three million dollars.

This behind Jalen Carter, but ahead of Jeffrey Simmons and
Chris Jones, who are all gonna make north of thirty
one mil. Carter's at thirty eight, Quinn Williams at thirty
five point three. Again, this is average annual value Dexter
Lawrence twenty eight and by the way, as has been

pointed out, is going to occupy less than five percent
of the Bengals twenty twenty six salary cap. Again, man,
major move, splashy move. The Bengals opting for relative to
what the tenth overall pick would have been, opting for
more expensive labor. But by the day and look, all

of this blows up. If he's not productive once the
game start or if he gets hurt, something like that.
But every day in training camp he has stood out.
I believe he helps set the tone this offseason along
with Boye Mafe and Brian Cook. Like Duke Tobin talked

Dexter Lawrence is at the top of that list. But
they're not overpaying either. He might not be the best,
fifth best defensive tackle in football, but I certainly believe
there's a world where he goes back and he plays
the way he did here with the Giants in twenty
three and twenty four, and he's the best defensive tackle
in football and not even close to the highest paid.

Every single day he looks like a better acquisition, and
every single day he looks like a bigger and better bargain.

Dexter Lawrence. They're going to be limited, which you would expect.
I would be okay if none of those guys played,
how about you?

Yeah, but I get the why they don't tackle in
training camp. Other teams, including the Lions do who aren't
going to play their guys, So you have had some
live reps for the Lions. The Dexter Lawrence dott is
interesting because from a Dexter Lawrence standpoint, there's nothing else
I need to see. But guys do need to understand
playing around him in a game setting, what he's going

to do and what he's going to draw the attention
of so linebackers. It's different reads one on one battles,
it's blitz fit, it's run fits. Just getting a few
live snaps with Dexter Lawrence, I understand the why for
Joe Burrow, I think it's about rhythm. I think it's
about understanding just the procedure from series to series. Go

have a series in a dumb down, simplified playbook, come
to the sideline, go through the iPad, go through those
conversations with the linemen or the receivers or your coaches,
and then go back out there for another series. I
think you can protect those guys just based on play calls. Logistically,
I see why it's important, and I see why they
are at least going to play. Very briefly, I would

assume on Thursday.
