Lots to get to from last night's preseason game. And
I cannot emphasize this enough. I thought the good outweighed
the bad. I thought the good outweighed the bad by
a large, large factor. Preseason games. There's always good. Regular

season games, even when they win, there's always good and bad.
But you're, I think more than in more so than
in regular season games. You're putting players under a microscope,
right because you're not as invested in the result. There's
no consequence to who wins and who loses. You're looking
at individual players, You're looking at maybe individual position groups.

You're putting players under a microscope in ways that you
don't in the regular season. Roster spots are up for grabs.
Young players are trying to prove themselves, and in some cases,
older players are trying to prove themselves, and so I
think watching it through that lens, which most of us
were last night, I think you walked away pretty pleased.
The Orlando Brown discussion, which is centered around one play.

We're an undrafted rookie free agent by the name of
Eric O'Neil just absolutely abused Orlando Brown hits Joe Burrow
in the back, easily the biggest hit of the night,
and at that point I think all of us were like,
please do whatever you can to get number nine out

of the game. Look, man, sometimes in spring training, a
bright eyed guy who's never had a major league at
that before can get a knock off a Hall of
Fame pitcher who's just working on some stuff.

It happens. Happens in football.

Sometimes a guy by the name of Eric O'Neil in
one play just torches a guy who's had a terrific
long career like Orlando Brown, and you ignore it. You
don't make much of it. We don't spend time on
sports talk radio talking about it. But Orlando Brown is

it an interesting place in his career. It is very reasonable,
very reasonable to say that Orlando Brown's best football is
behind him. He's thirty years old, he's played forever. Pro
football focused metrics, you can do what you want with them.
His overall season grade has gone down every year since

twenty twenty two. Does that mean he's a bad football player. No,
means he's probably played his best ball. Also means that,
like regression is likely to continue, he may defy the
odds and at age thirty, reverse what has been a
year's long trend and have a terrific year playing left tackle,

and today may end up being like the day we
talked about him more than any other time or any
other day during the twenty twenty sixth season. But as
we talk about the offensive line, it's a lot of
excitement for a Marius Mims. Amrius Mims has a chance
to be like an all Pro caliber player Dylan Fairchild,

who I think had a quiet rookie season, which is
exactly what you want from a guard. If he makes
the second year leap, as we all are hoping for it,
as most of us expect, gonna have a good player there.
Ted Kris is still a solid NFL player. We're all
thrilled that Dalton Riisner is back. Orlando Brown at the
end of the season last year, if we talk about

offensive line play for the Bengals. I think we talked
about how collectively look like a really good unit, but man,
there were times where Orlando Brown looked like he was struggling.
Two things could be true, right, Orlando Brown had some
struggles during a time when the Bengals offensive line play

was otherwise really, really good.

We're not picking on.

Him, but it is fair to suggest that the regression,
which has been a years long thing now is going
to continue. And like, let's let's let's look at at
who he's going to be asked to block. They're gonna
play against Will Anderson week two. Also, Danielle Hunter is
also on that Houston team. He's gonna be asked, probably

at various points in week two to block both guys.

Watt Week three, Trey Hendrickson's not too deep in the distance,
Josh heinz Allen week four. I'm not even going Reuben
Bain week one. Not there yet. He's a rookie, Like,
come on, man, and it only it only takes one hit.
And I'm not even talking about Joe Burrow getting hurt.

It only takes one hit to derail a game.

Every offensive lineman gets beaten. You're you're allowed to have
a bad rep, You're allowed to have a bad snap.
But I think what last night did for those of
us who are being reasonable, is it just it was
something worth filing away. Okay, the guy who last year,
Orlando Brown last season had the second worst Pro Football

Focus grade of anybody on the offensive line. I think
Dylan Fairchild was worst, which you would expect that he's
a rookie. Okay, well, whose Pro Football Focus grade is
more likely to go up in twenty twenty six. The
second year guy or the ninth year guy probably gonna
be the second year guy.

So like, it doesn't mean he's a bad player.

But you're always you're always looking for a way to improve,
You're always wondering what if, You're always trying to come
up with contingencies. By the way, there were certainly other
offensive linemen whose performances we could talk about last night,
most notably Brian Parker, who was awesome. But part of
this conversation is also about swing tackle. Like, for Orlando
(06:22):
Brown's the weak link on the offensive line, and you're
thinking about, okay, well, is it maybe time to replace him?
And I know that sounds far fetched are you comfortable
with who you have behind him? Nobody is overreacting to
one moment, but I do think it is fair to
wonder what caliber of play will the Bengals get from
Big Oh.

Eleven minutes after four o'clock, I asked the thought last night.
We were talking yesterday about focusing on linebackers. Barrett Carter,
Demetrius Knight was a good night for Joe Giles Harris,
was a good night for Swas Bozeman. Was a good
night for Oron Burks. Like those guys. Never get talked

about those guys. It's at linebacker. It's all about the
two guys who was rookies last year struggled so much.
I thought last night was a pretty good night for
the position as a whole. Thought, last night was a
really solid night for Evan McPherson. A year ago at
this time, you know, Evan in twenty twenty four had

an uneven year. Last year, Evan McPherson had a quality season.
Last night, he kicked the hell out of the ball.
He looked great. It was a rough night for TODJ. Brooks,
Tony and Austin were talking about this on Sincy three,
sixty today. If you're a running back on the Bengals,
you gotta be able to catch the ball. They threw
to Todge Brooks twice last night he dropped both passes.

I like Todge Brooks and like it's I'm in midtally
being shortsighted about this.

Brooks at Texas Tech in a game against UC carried
the ball like five hundred times and was just terrific.
Like that night, I'm like, dude, that's an old school
type running back. They could just feeding and give them
the ball to and last night they threw it to him.

It was a rough night for Dejon Anthony safety, who
was battling for a spot on the team. I thought, though,
it was collectively a good night for the defense, and
with a handful of exceptions Dejon Anthony PJ. Jewles a
handful of times, I thought it was a good night
for the Bengals tackling like that. Last night was And
it wasn't perfect, but last night was. It felt like

a demonstration of some pretty good Bengals tackling. And you
know that's something we focused on a little bit yesterday.
If the Bengals defense wants to take the first step
toward being a significantly better defense this season compared to last.
Just start there. Start with tackling again. It wasn't perfect,
(08:50):
but it was a better tackling demonstration than pretty much
anything we saw last season. Fourteen minutes after four o'clock
and then there were this. We got two poll questions.
I gonna post them during the break at Moegar thanks
to United Heartland Insurance. One's about Orlando Brown, the others
about coaches calling timeouts in the fourth quarter of preseason games.

Dan Campbell's challenging calls and they would have gone to
a t the TV timeout they took. Anyway, He's challenging
calls in the fourth quarter preseason games. They should have
a like a back in the day when I was
a kid, the American League had a curfew where like
an inning couldn't start after one o'clock in the morning.

But by and large, I thought a night with the
positives outweigh the negatives and we'll talk about this more

what they do every year, and the best way to
enjoy just consistent, sustained success is to have rookie classes

that can continue to contribute in their first seasons. Last night,
and again it's just the preseason game. The rookie class
really really contributed. Quarter after four ESPN fifteen thirty, five
thirty will have a doctor Brandon Korus from Orthos Sincy.

Hunter Green's going to get to a point next year
where he's out of sight, out of mind, and every
piece of exasperation that everybody feels when it comes to
Hunter Green is fair and reasonable and I share it.
But I'm interested in talking about what he has had
done and what he has ahead from a medical perspective,
and so doctor Corps will do that in about an

FC Cincinnati in the second half of their game against
Atlas laid an absolute egg.

a microcosm of the season. Every time you feel like
this team is about to get going, kind of feels
like they fall flat on their face. Dax McCarty has

FC Cincinnati is back in MLS play with a road
tilt tomorrow night against Orlando after a disappointing performance against

Atlas in the league's Cup competition. A road game tomorrow night,
seven thirty Apple TV. The Great Dax mcar already joins
us from Apple TV as they've got the game tomorrow night.
I felt like the League's Cup competition for FC Cincinnati
was kind of a microcosm of the season where boy,
you saw maybe their most balanced performance in their second game,
(12:14):
and you kind of feel like, all right, this thing's
about to take off. And then with the way things
unfolded against Atlas, the rug gets pulled out from underneath them,
and I feel like that's that's kind of been a
theme of this season for Pat Newton's team.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
I think that's a fair assessment.
Speaker 5 (12:27):
I would certainly say that Pat Nowton has seen this
movie play out before a team that looks utterly dominant
at times in the attack and then it just kind
of falls apart for them at different moments throughout really
high leverage, important games. And so the Atlas game, I
agree one hundred percent FC Cincinnati feels like they're in
(12:50):
total control and then it's almost like a cascading effect.
One mistake turns into two mistakes, two mistakes turns into three,
and then all of a sudden, Cincinnati's on.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
The ball out of the back of their own net.
And Pat talked about this a little bit.
Speaker 5 (13:04):
We had great conversation with him before this on on
a broadcast call before the game against Orlando City tomorrow.
He said that they're emotionally fragile in certain moments of
the game when things don't go their way. It's almost
like they they just kind of can't figure a way
(13:24):
out of rough patches. And so we've seen this this
movie play out with Cincinnati a number of different times,
and I think that they're really close to being able
to get over that hump. But until you start to
win really important games, until you start to really I think,
button things up defensively and be able to see out
games and not conceive so many goals. And this is
(13:46):
a trend for Cincinnati that that could continue, especially going
into the important games of later this year.
Speaker 1 (13:53):
I think what's so weird and interesting about everything you
just said is Pat Noonan is an awesome coach, like
huge fan, and he has done so many terrific things
since becoming this team's head coach. I could talk about
him for an hour. But what you just outlined has
kind of been characteristic of his teams here where you
(14:14):
could just feel it. You could feel it snowballing and
like they can't put the toothpaste back in the tube
and bet something bad just happened, and now you know
they're not going to be able to sort of recenter things.
And I know there have been exceptions to that. So
how much of that is a direct reflection of somebody
who is regarded as one of the best coaches in
this league.
Speaker 5 (14:33):
I think Pat Noonan would tell you himself that it's certainly,
He's certainly a part of it.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
He has to be. He's a fantastic.
Speaker 5 (14:40):
Manager, He's a great leader, and he is the one
that always puts his hand up.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
First when it comes to accountability.
Speaker 5 (14:46):
And are there different things that Pat Noonan can do
to maybe help his team? Are there different moments in
the game where in training they can work on these
different moments.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
Sure, but I would argue that they do work on
those things.
Speaker 5 (14:58):
I would argue Pat Noonan in the last couple of
years has tried his best to tweak things and to
give his players the confidence to not be scared to
make mistakes, to go after the game, to try to
regroup when mistakes happen, and it just hasn't worked out.
And I think the players have to bear some responsibility
(15:19):
as well. Let's not forget FC Cincinnati team is not
a young team. They're in fact a very old team
and a very experienced team. They have some players who
have played in some really big games and have won
some really important things. Guys like Matt Miyaga, guys like
Miles Robinson, guys like Obi Wobadot and of course Evander
(15:41):
and so it's not as if this team is extremely inexperienced.
And I know for a fact that when you are
on the field and when things don't go well, or
when mistakes happen, or when things don't go right, you
can't look.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
Over to the sideline and hope that your coach comes
up with.
Speaker 5 (15:59):
Some magic say and some magic hand signal where he
can just all of a sudden change the way.
Speaker 3 (16:05):
You play at the drop of a hat.
Speaker 5 (16:06):
It has to come from the players, and so I
would say that it is a two bold issue.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
It is, yes, Pat being able.
Speaker 5 (16:13):
To get more out of his group than moments that
don't quite go their way, but it's also the leaders
on this team stepping up and being able to stabilize
a group that is really fragile when things don't go
their way.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
They no team in Major League Soccer in Major League
Soccer play has scored more goals, and yet their goal
differential is just plus one.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
So defensive vision.
Speaker 1 (16:36):
I joked with one of your colleagues, Steve Candelosi, watching
the MLS All Star Game, I felt like I was
watching an FC Cincinnati game with how high scoring and
as open as it was. And it's incredibly entertaining, but
it's frustrating if you're rooting for a side to get
three points, I do feel like when it comes to
not allowing goals, they have improved. How does that improvement
(16:57):
continue enough for this team to really matter in the
proverbial second half of the season.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
Well, you have to eliminate the mental mistakes. That's first
and foremost.
Speaker 5 (17:08):
And Pat Noonan is never going to blame any singular player.
Speaker 3 (17:12):
But I'm an analyst, so I can't.
Speaker 5 (17:14):
I can look at certain situations against Atlas and say, hey, Endreshchinike,
it's a really poor loss of possession that then leads
to at Las getting a chance, and hey, Evan Laurow,
you have to hold onto the ball. That is a
goalkeeper error. Evan Laurow, who, funny enough, played I played
with Evan Laurel way back in the day when he
was a youngster at Red Bull. He's a really good goalkeeper.
(17:36):
I think he's now a very experienced goalkeeper. He's one
of the better backups you can have in Major League Soccer,
and yet mistakes happen.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
So that's the first thing that you need to do.
Speaker 5 (17:47):
You need to raise the floor a little bit when
it comes to the mistakes and eliminating them. And I
think the second thing is that I think FC Cincinnati's
structure at times because they like to attack, because both
of their wingbacks are much more attack minded players, you
have to have your center backs be able to put
out fires a little bit more.
Speaker 3 (18:08):
Than they have.
Speaker 5 (18:09):
And whether it's Miles Robinson maybe not being in the
best form he's ever been in this season, whether it's
Matt Mayoska constantly dealing with little nagging injuries here and
there that maybe have kept him from hitting his top level,
whether it's Andre Shirilla, a player who I think is
going to be fantastic in MLS, but is very inexperienced,
very good on the ball, but maybe a little bit
(18:31):
soft defensively. You have to have your center backs be
able to put out fires and win physical duels and
be in one v one situations and not get exposed
if you are going to play with wingbacks who get
super high up the field and who are more attack minded.
That's something that I've noticed with FC Cincinnati is that
when they get exposed a lot of times it's in transition,
(18:51):
and a lot of times they just quite frankly, they
lose their focus a little bit when they are defending
their box.
Speaker 3 (18:58):
So those are some areas of improved that I.
Speaker 5 (19:00):
Know have been identified by the SC Cincinnati coaching staff,
and now it's just a matter of helping them get
to the next level.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
Because I do agree with you.
Speaker 5 (19:09):
I do think we've seen improvements, specifically in Leeds.
Speaker 3 (19:12):
Cup, where they were able.
Speaker 5 (19:14):
Before that Atlas game, they had only conceded one goal
in their first two games, and then the two goals
conceded against Atlas were, in my opinion, mistakes that were preventable.
Speaker 3 (19:23):
So I see things trending in the right direction.
Speaker 5 (19:27):
But the players have to be the ones that have
to execute on the field. The coach can prepare as
much as he wants. If the players aren't executing on
the field, then you're going to have to change the person.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
Up Orlando's city.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
I look at the table and they look like the
sort of team you want to see when you're having
a hard time preventing goals. And yet they have two
wins against two teams in the top five of the league.
They've added Antoine Griesman. So is this I don't know
what is this matchup for FC Cincinnati.
Speaker 5 (19:56):
This is a banana peel. If you're looking at this
matchup like it will be.
Speaker 3 (20:00):
A get right game.
Speaker 5 (20:02):
Orlando City the team that existed in the pre World
Cup break, that team does not exist anymore.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
That team is dead and Barry and I thought Pat
Newton said it brilliantly. I've also heard this from.
Speaker 5 (20:15):
DJ Callahan when we asked him about the pre team's
pre World Cup break.
Speaker 3 (20:19):
He said, it's completely different season. He said, you can
forget about everything that.
Speaker 5 (20:23):
Happened before the World Cup break because teams are totally
different now. New additions have come in, coaches have had
time to work on things that they needed to improve,
and I think Orlando City, like no team in MLS
has benefited more from the World Cup break than Orlando City.
They bring in a superstar and Antoine Griesman, who has
absolutely made them significantly better. They already had one of
(20:44):
the most dynamic attacks in Major League Soccer.
Speaker 3 (20:47):
He makes them that much better.
Speaker 5 (20:49):
They've gotten a lot of younger players good minutes and
have stepped up and played I think at a really
high level over the last couple of weeks.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
And then defensively they've been significantly better.
Speaker 5 (21:00):
Mentioned in reference those two good wins against top five
teams in the League. Well, we're talking about the San
Jose Airthquakes and National Est see two of the higher
scoring teams in the league.
Speaker 3 (21:08):
And it wasn't just wins. They shut both those teams out.
Speaker 5 (21:11):
They didn't concede a goal and so you know, they
had a little bit of a fallback against Red Bull
New York where they're conceded three. But this is a
team that has significantly improved defensively. They conceded I believe,
forty four goals before the World cupbreak. I can assure
you that in the second half of the season that
number is going to be significantly lower. But it should

be a very, very good game. Let's not forget that
Orlando City's only six points in the table behind FC Cincinnati.
Both of these teams are going to be I think
in the conversation for not just challenging for a playoff spot.
I think Cincinnati's absolutely making the playoffs. I think Cincinnati
needs to challenge for a top four spot. And Orlando
City is going to cause a lot of teams a
lot of trouble in the second half of the season.

Lots to get to from last night's preseason game. And
I cannot emphasize this enough. I thought the good outweighed
the bad. I thought the good outweighed the bad by
a large, large factor. Preseason games. There's always good. Regular

season games, even when they win, there's always good and bad.
But you're, I think more than in more so than
in regular season games. You're putting players under a microscope,
right because you're not as invested in the result. There's
no consequence to who wins and who loses. You're looking
at individual players, You're looking at maybe individual position groups.

You're putting players under a microscope in ways that you
don't in the regular season. Roster spots are up for grabs.
Young players are trying to prove themselves, and in some cases,
older players are trying to prove themselves, and so I
think watching it through that lens, which most of us
were last night, I think you walked away pretty pleased.
The Orlando Brown discussion, which is centered around one play.

We're an undrafted rookie free agent by the name of
Eric O'Neil just absolutely abused Orlando Brown hits Joe Burrow
in the back, easily the biggest hit of the night,
and at that point I think all of us were like,
please do whatever you can to get number nine out

of the game. Look, man, sometimes in spring training, a
bright eyed guy who's never had a major league at
that before can get a knock off a Hall of
Fame pitcher who's just working on some stuff.

It happens. Happens in football.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
Sometimes a guy by the name of Eric O'Neil in
one play just torches a guy who's had a terrific
long career like Orlando Brown, and you ignore it. You
don't make much of it. We don't spend time on
sports talk radio talking about it. But Orlando Brown is
(02:30):
it an interesting place in his career. It is very reasonable,
very reasonable to say that Orlando Brown's best football is
behind him. He's thirty years old, he's played forever. Pro
football focused metrics, you can do what you want with them.
His overall season grade has gone down every year since
(02:51):
twenty twenty two. Does that mean he's a bad football player. No,
means he's probably played his best ball. Also means that,
like regression is likely to continue, he may defy the
odds and at age thirty, reverse what has been a
year's long trend and have a terrific year playing left tackle,
(03:12):
and today may end up being like the day we
talked about him more than any other time or any
other day during the twenty twenty sixth season. But as
we talk about the offensive line, it's a lot of
excitement for a Marius Mims. Amrius Mims has a chance
to be like an all Pro caliber player Dylan Fairchild,
(03:37):
who I think had a quiet rookie season, which is
exactly what you want from a guard. If he makes
the second year leap, as we all are hoping for it,
as most of us expect, gonna have a good player there.
Ted Kris is still a solid NFL player. We're all
thrilled that Dalton Riisner is back. Orlando Brown at the
end of the season last year, if we talk about

offensive line play for the Bengals. I think we talked
about how collectively look like a really good unit, but man,
there were times where Orlando Brown looked like he was struggling.
Two things could be true, right, Orlando Brown had some
struggles during a time when the Bengals offensive line play
(04:18):
was otherwise really, really good.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
We're not picking on.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Him, but it is fair to suggest that the regression,
which has been a years long thing now is going
to continue. And like, let's let's let's look at at
who he's going to be asked to block. They're gonna
play against Will Anderson week two. Also, Danielle Hunter is
also on that Houston team. He's gonna be asked, probably

at various points in week two to block both guys.

Watt Week three, Trey Hendrickson's not too deep in the distance,
Josh heinz Allen week four. I'm not even going Reuben
Bain week one. Not there yet. He's a rookie, Like,
come on, man, and it only it only takes one hit.

It only takes one hit to derail a game.

Every offensive lineman gets beaten. You're you're allowed to have
a bad rep, You're allowed to have a bad snap.
But I think what last night did for those of
us who are being reasonable, is it just it was
something worth filing away. Okay, the guy who last year,
Orlando Brown last season had the second worst Pro Football

Focus grade of anybody on the offensive line. I think
Dylan Fairchild was worst, which you would expect that he's
a rookie. Okay, well, whose Pro Football Focus grade is
more likely to go up in twenty twenty six. The
second year guy or the ninth year guy probably gonna
be the second year guy.

So like, it doesn't mean he's a bad player.

But you're always you're always looking for a way to improve,
You're always wondering what if, You're always trying to come
up with contingencies. By the way, there were certainly other
offensive linemen whose performances we could talk about last night,
most notably Brian Parker, who was awesome. But part of
this conversation is also about swing tackle. Like, for Orlando
(06:22):
Brown's the weak link on the offensive line, and you're
thinking about, okay, well, is it maybe time to replace him?
And I know that sounds far fetched are you comfortable
with who you have behind him? Nobody is overreacting to
one moment, but I do think it is fair to
wonder what caliber of play will the Bengals get from
Big Oh.

Eleven minutes after four o'clock, I asked the thought last night.
We were talking yesterday about focusing on linebackers. Barrett Carter,
Demetrius Knight was a good night for Joe Giles Harris,
was a good night for Swas Bozeman. Was a good
night for Oron Burks. Like those guys. Never get talked
(07:06):
about those guys. It's at linebacker. It's all about the
two guys who was rookies last year struggled so much.
I thought last night was a pretty good night for
the position as a whole. Thought, last night was a
really solid night for Evan McPherson. A year ago at
this time, you know, Evan in twenty twenty four had
(07:26):
an uneven year. Last year, Evan McPherson had a quality season.
Last night, he kicked the hell out of the ball.
He looked great. It was a rough night for TODJ. Brooks,
Tony and Austin were talking about this on Sincy three,
sixty today. If you're a running back on the Bengals,
you gotta be able to catch the ball. They threw
to Todge Brooks twice last night he dropped both passes.

I like Todge Brooks and like it's I'm in midtally
being shortsighted about this.

Brooks at Texas Tech in a game against UC carried
the ball like five hundred times and was just terrific.
Like that night, I'm like, dude, that's an old school
type running back. They could just feeding and give them
the ball to and last night they threw it to him.

It was a rough night for Dejon Anthony safety, who
was battling for a spot on the team. I thought, though,
it was collectively a good night for the defense, and
with a handful of exceptions Dejon Anthony PJ. Jewles a
handful of times, I thought it was a good night
for the Bengals tackling like that. Last night was And
it wasn't perfect, but last night was. It felt like

a demonstration of some pretty good Bengals tackling. And you
know that's something we focused on a little bit yesterday.
If the Bengals defense wants to take the first step
toward being a significantly better defense this season compared to last.
Just start there. Start with tackling again. It wasn't perfect,
(08:50):
but it was a better tackling demonstration than pretty much
anything we saw last season. Fourteen minutes after four o'clock
and then there were this. We got two poll questions.
I gonna post them during the break at Moegar thanks
to United Heartland Insurance. One's about Orlando Brown, the others
about coaches calling timeouts in the fourth quarter of preseason games.

Dan Campbell's challenging calls and they would have gone to

calls in the fourth quarter preseason games. They should have
a like a back in the day when I was
a kid, the American League had a curfew where like
an inning couldn't start after one o'clock in the morning.

that can continue to contribute in their first seasons. Last night,
and again it's just the preseason game. The rookie class
really really contributed. Quarter after four ESPN fifteen thirty, five

where he's out of sight, out of mind, and every
piece of exasperation that everybody feels when it comes to
Hunter Green is fair and reasonable and I share it.
But I'm interested in talking about what he has had
done and what he has ahead from a medical perspective,

this team is about to get going, kind of feels

tilt tomorrow night against Orlando after a disappointing performance against

Atlas in the league's Cup competition. A road game tomorrow night,
seven thirty Apple TV. The Great Dax mcar already joins
us from Apple TV as they've got the game tomorrow night.
I felt like the League's Cup competition for FC Cincinnati
was kind of a microcosm of the season where boy,
you saw maybe their most balanced performance in their second game,
(12:14):
and you kind of feel like, all right, this thing's
about to take off. And then with the way things
unfolded against Atlas, the rug gets pulled out from underneath them,
and I feel like that's that's kind of been a
theme of this season for Pat Newton's team.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
I think that's a fair assessment.
Speaker 5 (12:27):
I would certainly say that Pat Nowton has seen this
movie play out before a team that looks utterly dominant
at times in the attack and then it just kind
of falls apart for them at different moments throughout really
high leverage, important games. And so the Atlas game, I
agree one hundred percent FC Cincinnati feels like they're in
(12:50):
total control and then it's almost like a cascading effect.
One mistake turns into two mistakes, two mistakes turns into three,
and then all of a sudden, Cincinnati's on.
Speaker 3 (13:00):
The ball out of the back of their own net.
And Pat talked about this a little bit.
Speaker 5 (13:04):
We had great conversation with him before this on on
a broadcast call before the game against Orlando City tomorrow.
He said that they're emotionally fragile in certain moments of
the game when things don't go their way. It's almost
like they they just kind of can't figure a way
(13:24):
out of rough patches. And so we've seen this this
movie play out with Cincinnati a number of different times,
and I think that they're really close to being able
to get over that hump. But until you start to
win really important games, until you start to really I think,
button things up defensively and be able to see out
games and not conceive so many goals. And this is
(13:46):
a trend for Cincinnati that that could continue, especially going
into the important games of later this year.
Speaker 1 (13:53):
I think what's so weird and interesting about everything you
just said is Pat Noonan is an awesome coach, like
huge fan, and he has done so many terrific things
since becoming this team's head coach. I could talk about
him for an hour. But what you just outlined has
kind of been characteristic of his teams here where you
(14:14):
could just feel it. You could feel it snowballing and
like they can't put the toothpaste back in the tube
and bet something bad just happened, and now you know
they're not going to be able to sort of recenter things.
And I know there have been exceptions to that. So
how much of that is a direct reflection of somebody
who is regarded as one of the best coaches in
this league.
Speaker 5 (14:33):
I think Pat Noonan would tell you himself that it's certainly,
He's certainly a part of it.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
He has to be. He's a fantastic.
Speaker 5 (14:40):
Manager, He's a great leader, and he is the one
that always puts his hand up.
Speaker 3 (14:44):
First when it comes to accountability.
Speaker 5 (14:46):
And are there different things that Pat Noonan can do
to maybe help his team? Are there different moments in
the game where in training they can work on these
different moments.
Speaker 3 (14:55):
Sure, but I would argue that they do work on
those things.
Speaker 5 (14:58):
I would argue Pat Noonan in the last couple of
years has tried his best to tweak things and to
give his players the confidence to not be scared to
make mistakes, to go after the game, to try to
regroup when mistakes happen, and it just hasn't worked out.
And I think the players have to bear some responsibility
(15:19):
as well. Let's not forget FC Cincinnati team is not
a young team. They're in fact a very old team
and a very experienced team. They have some players who
have played in some really big games and have won
some really important things. Guys like Matt Miyaga, guys like
Miles Robinson, guys like Obi Wobadot and of course Evander
(15:41):
and so it's not as if this team is extremely inexperienced.
And I know for a fact that when you are
on the field and when things don't go well, or
when mistakes happen, or when things don't go right, you
can't look.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
Over to the sideline and hope that your coach comes
up with.
Speaker 5 (15:59):
Some magic say and some magic hand signal where he
can just all of a sudden change the way.
Speaker 3 (16:05):
You play at the drop of a hat.
Speaker 5 (16:06):
It has to come from the players, and so I
would say that it is a two bold issue.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
It is, yes, Pat being able.
Speaker 5 (16:13):
To get more out of his group than moments that
don't quite go their way, but it's also the leaders
on this team stepping up and being able to stabilize
a group that is really fragile when things don't go
their way.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
They no team in Major League Soccer in Major League
Soccer play has scored more goals, and yet their goal
differential is just plus one.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
So defensive vision.
Speaker 1 (16:36):
I joked with one of your colleagues, Steve Candelosi, watching
the MLS All Star Game, I felt like I was
watching an FC Cincinnati game with how high scoring and
as open as it was. And it's incredibly entertaining, but
it's frustrating if you're rooting for a side to get
three points, I do feel like when it comes to
not allowing goals, they have improved. How does that improvement
(16:57):
continue enough for this team to really matter in the
proverbial second half of the season.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
Well, you have to eliminate the mental mistakes. That's first
and foremost.
Speaker 5 (17:08):
And Pat Noonan is never going to blame any singular player.
Speaker 3 (17:12):
But I'm an analyst, so I can't.
Speaker 5 (17:14):
I can look at certain situations against Atlas and say, hey, Endreshchinike,
it's a really poor loss of possession that then leads
to at Las getting a chance, and hey, Evan Laurow,
you have to hold onto the ball. That is a
goalkeeper error. Evan Laurow, who, funny enough, played I played
with Evan Laurel way back in the day when he
was a youngster at Red Bull. He's a really good goalkeeper.
(17:36):
I think he's now a very experienced goalkeeper. He's one
of the better backups you can have in Major League Soccer,
and yet mistakes happen.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
So that's the first thing that you need to do.
Speaker 5 (17:47):
You need to raise the floor a little bit when
it comes to the mistakes and eliminating them. And I
think the second thing is that I think FC Cincinnati's
structure at times because they like to attack, because both
of their wingbacks are much more attack minded players, you
have to have your center backs be able to put
out fires a little bit more.
Speaker 3 (18:08):
Than they have.
Speaker 5 (18:09):
And whether it's Miles Robinson maybe not being in the
best form he's ever been in this season, whether it's
Matt Mayoska constantly dealing with little nagging injuries here and
there that maybe have kept him from hitting his top level,
whether it's Andre Shirilla, a player who I think is
going to be fantastic in MLS, but is very inexperienced,
very good on the ball, but maybe a little bit
(18:31):
soft defensively. You have to have your center backs be
able to put out fires and win physical duels and
be in one v one situations and not get exposed
if you are going to play with wingbacks who get
super high up the field and who are more attack minded.
That's something that I've noticed with FC Cincinnati is that
when they get exposed a lot of times it's in transition,
(18:51):
and a lot of times they just quite frankly, they
lose their focus a little bit when they are defending
their box.
Speaker 3 (18:58):
So those are some areas of improved that I.
Speaker 5 (19:00):
Know have been identified by the SC Cincinnati coaching staff,
and now it's just a matter of helping them get
to the next level.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
Because I do agree with you.
Speaker 5 (19:09):
I do think we've seen improvements, specifically in Leeds.
Speaker 3 (19:12):
Cup, where they were able.
Speaker 5 (19:14):
Before that Atlas game, they had only conceded one goal
in their first two games, and then the two goals
conceded against Atlas were, in my opinion, mistakes that were preventable.
Speaker 3 (19:23):
So I see things trending in the right direction.

But the players have to be the ones that have
to execute on the field. The coach can prepare as
much as he wants. If the players aren't executing on
the field, then you're going to have to change the person.

Up Orlando's city.

I look at the table and they look like the
sort of team you want to see when you're having
a hard time preventing goals. And yet they have two
wins against two teams in the top five of the league.
They've added Antoine Griesman. So is this I don't know
what is this matchup for FC Cincinnati.

This is a banana peel. If you're looking at this
matchup like it will be.
Speaker 3 (20:00):
A get right game.

Orlando City the team that existed in the pre World
Cup break, that team does not exist anymore.

That team is dead and Barry and I thought Pat
Newton said it brilliantly. I've also heard this from.

DJ Callahan when we asked him about the pre team's
pre World Cup break.
Speaker 3 (20:19):
He said, it's completely different season. He said, you can
forget about everything that.
Speaker 5 (20:23):
Happened before the World Cup break because teams are totally
different now. New additions have come in, coaches have had
time to work on things that they needed to improve,
and I think Orlando City, like no team in MLS
has benefited more from the World Cup break than Orlando City.
They bring in a superstar and Antoine Griesman, who has
absolutely made them significantly better. They already had one of

the most dynamic attacks in Major League Soccer.

He makes them that much better.
Speaker 5 (20:49):
They've gotten a lot of younger players good minutes and
have stepped up and played I think at a really
high level over the last couple of weeks.

And then defensively they've been significantly better.
