of its seat.

Speaker 3 (00:14):
Incredible catch gets.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
The call from those masters of the Dan hord At
Dave pop Coverridge begins Saturday morning at night. I am
Bam Bam ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home of the Bengals.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Paul Tanner Juniors. Here So am I?

Speaker 4 (00:32):
So are you good? Afternoon on Moegar. This is ESPN
fifteen thirty.

Speaker 3 (00:35):
Thank you for listening.

Speaker 4 (00:36):
I posted a show preview video. It's on x at Mogar.
Thanks to Emery Federal Credit Union. Your credit Union was
hard since nineteen thirty nine. Go to EMORYFCU dot org.
Tony Pike Bengals are not practicing today, but Tony is
going to give us hourly training camp reports, and I

(00:57):
have asked him to either makeup or embellish things even
though they're not practicing today. I might ask him to
make like, pretend the Bengals are practicing and talk about
how awesome Joe Burrow looks today, just to make a
few people on the Internet. Happy, Paul's gonna be with us,
Paul's with us now, Tony's gonna be with us. Three
forty five, four forty five and five forty five Reds
win again. Last night, Hunter Green's awesome again. Barry Larkin

(01:20):
said some stuff on TV that I really liked. We'll
spend some time on that as well. Hi, Paul, Hi,
how's it going?

Speaker 5 (01:26):
Man?

Speaker 1 (01:27):
Everything as well, isn't it? I mean, I'm just happy.
Are we are we gonna open with backup Center? Or
are we gonna wait on that? I had it on
the list, yeah, okay, just making sure. I mean I
didn't have it on the list, but apparently it's it's
a big topic, and is it? And I don't know,
people and my mentions really want to talk about backup

(01:48):
Center today?

Speaker 3 (01:48):
Okay, I don't know. Why does that mean it's a
big topic.

Speaker 4 (01:51):
If two people are mad about something on the internet,
that doesn't make it a big topic. No, as somebody
who has fallen into that trap often it does.

Speaker 6 (01:58):
It Just it's just I don't know.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
I am always alarmed when things like this happened, Like
did I miss something? I Mean, I feel like there's
a lot of big storylines that are happening around the
team right now. So I just I get surprised when
I see, like Matt Lee rage, I don't know, it
showed up today, and I'm just very I just get
concerned when I see that about what's happening.

Speaker 6 (02:21):
Did I miss something?

Speaker 1 (02:22):
While there's a lot, I just feel like there's a
lot of big topics that a lot should be starting
with yeah, you know, pretty like really big.

Speaker 4 (02:30):
Yeah, Jamar Chase number one. So yesterday things took a
little bit of a pivot. And it might be a
temporary pivot, and it might be a pivot to something good,
but it's undeniable that the tone and the vibe regarding
what's happening with Jamar Chase and the Bengals took a
pivot when he was a no show for everything yesterday.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
I think so, I mean, I think that this certainly
had all the all the feelings and the symptoms of
somebody who was trying to send a message. I don't
have to be around hanging out being cool about this.

Speaker 6 (03:07):
We can we can take a little bit.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
More brutal approach to this, and that's if that's the
way it's going to be. Drawing more attention to it.
Maybe it's a little too quiet. It's been a quiet
holding I guess maybe, yeah, it was too quiet. It
feels like that's part of it. It does feel like
this is growing a little bit the old you know,

(03:30):
the question that nobody has an answer to is how
far it will grow. But for now, it just it
just keeps going on, and I think it's it's frustrating
for everybody.

Speaker 6 (03:42):
Yes, I mean, it's just.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Can can everybody just sit down and lay out a
deadline or some ground rules by you know, either this
is the day that either we get this done by
or not and we can move forward in whatever direction
that is self imposed deadline here rather than just the
dumb dragging on that this does like it's not helping anyone.

(04:08):
I don't know what. I'm not super sure what Jamar's
side is getting out of it or what the I mean,
I mean, the Bengals, I guess, are trying to just
dig into whatever they don't want to pay. Yeah, and
I don't see this stance from Jamar changing that, and
so it just kind of I get him not wanting

(04:30):
to participate in practice. Sure, I don't know a problem
with that. No, not really. I mean at this point,
I don't know. I don't have a problem with that. Yeah,
and we'll see where it ends. But like when it's like, Okay,
we're gonna take it to the next level, what what
is anybody getting at? What are you getting out of that?
Like do you feel like that's gonna make Mike Brown
change his tone or make the family's gonna view guaranteed

(04:52):
money differently because of extra attention?

Speaker 6 (04:56):
Like that's I don't really know that.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
I totally understand what the end game is and because
it's not going to change what they're doing. But I mean,
maybe they think it will. Maybe they think it will.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
Let me mention this really quick.

Speaker 4 (05:07):
Paul writes for the Athletic dot Com Oh Yeah, and
does a podcast, The Growler, with daily camp updates after
training camp practices with Jay Morrison.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
We did Balds Don't Lie yesterday.

Speaker 4 (05:18):
We talked extensively about a Marius Mims and his absence
at least for a while. You can follow Paul on
x at Paul Danner Junior. Let's let's sift through like
what Jamar is maybe or maybe not doing today the
Bengals are leaving for Chicago.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
I think here in a few hours. Do we expect
Jamar to be with his teammates?

Speaker 1 (05:37):
I expected him to be there yesterday.

Speaker 3 (05:42):
Yeah, right, day to day, I believe is the terms
being used.

Speaker 4 (05:46):
I think if he doesn't get on the plane and
he's not there tomorrow, which then means he's not there Saturday,
does that does that kick this? Does this kick this
into hyper drive a little bit?

Speaker 7 (05:57):
No?

Speaker 1 (05:57):
No, I think it continues to be the same as
just he's not here and those questions are going to
be asked and have to be answered for again, and
it goes on.

Speaker 6 (06:06):
I don't think it changes again.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
I just don't think it changes much outside of everybody
was comfortable having Jamar there hanging out and laughing and
kind of being the nice holding guy. But it doesn't
change anything in terms of what he wants.

Speaker 4 (06:21):
Do you think that yesterday is a signal that, you
know what, I might be willing to miss football games?

Speaker 1 (06:30):
Maybe maybe because at the end of the day, it's
willing to ratchet it up. If that's all that matters,
it's all that matters. Are you willing to actually miss games?

Speaker 6 (06:39):
Games?

Speaker 3 (06:39):
Plural?

Speaker 4 (06:40):
Are you know game? I mean a you're not going
to show up at Airhead Stadium play against Chiefs. Right
to me that that's that's what I want to know
more than anything, Like, yes, Jamar, I get what you're
doing here. I'm I understand it. I have no issue
with you not practicing. But are you gonna be on
the field when the Bengals play Week two against Kansas City?

Speaker 3 (06:58):
Okay? Cool?

Speaker 4 (06:59):
Are you gonna be on the field week one when
the Bengals play New England? And and if the answers
are yes, I'll be there, then none of this other
as you said two weeks ago, then it's just, you know,
two people staring at each other. It's just to me,
it's just it's just a guy who's unhappy about his
job but not willing to really do anything about it,
just complains about it in the break room.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
And I don't I don't know that sitting out early
games is gonna do anything about it. Like I think
it'll make a lot of people mad and nervous.

Speaker 4 (07:26):
I think how it's talked about publicly changes. Not that
that matters that much, but it certainly changes it's talked
about publicly.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
Yes, but I don't think that that would get accomplished
with Jamar wants accomplished. Like I mean, I get again,
you're just you're you're not gonna bully them into changing
the value of what they want to do right now,
Like I just I think that they'll agree to terms
when they feel like they like the terms, and trying

(07:53):
to bully them through stuff like this is not It's
there's there's just no precedent or history of it really
working at all, And so I mean, you never know.
But for that, I think that's obviously the only question
that hangs out there. Is he willing to miss any games?

Speaker 6 (08:09):
Would he do that?

Speaker 1 (08:10):
I still don't think so. I still think when push
comes to shove, Joe Burrow will give him the nod
on Labor Day and say let's go. Time to go,
And I think that changes it. But I don't think anybody.
I don't think anybody knows that. I don't think Jamar
has that answer for you yet in his head. I

(08:32):
don't think Jamar knows if he's actually going to be
willing to do that. I don't think the Bengals know
if he will actually be able willing to do that.

Speaker 6 (08:40):
I think they're.

Speaker 1 (08:40):
Trying to get day to day literally right now through
this thing and just keep focusing on what they got
going on.

Speaker 4 (08:46):
I feel for Zach Taylor even more now. I mean
in the middle of our practice yesterday when he's got
to come over and announce a bunch of other stuff
that we have to talk about, because a lot of
it was really interesting. But hey, he's day to day
and sort of have this look on it, like what do.

Speaker 3 (09:00):
You want me to do?

Speaker 6 (09:01):
Do?

Speaker 3 (09:01):
Man?

Speaker 4 (09:01):
Like I can't sign him. I'm trying to coach the team,
Like what do you want me to do? Like I
I feel. I know it's part of the job. I
know he's paid handsomely for that job. But it's a
part of the job that's really hard. There's nothing it sucks.

Speaker 1 (09:15):
It's yeah, he's just he's just trying to explain something
that he can't talk about. So you just I mean, honestly,
it's been a pretty good run for Vague timelines, Zach,
I think has been he's going I think for the
Pulleitzer Prize and like vegue coach timelines. This year we
have we've had several the Dictionary making appearance with several.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
Beautiful we have so well done.

Speaker 1 (09:40):
We had some time showed up about Jake Browning, yesterday.
We've had week to week, day to day We've had
I mean, it's just we just keep getting new ones.
In part of the plan communication. I like my communication,
like this is a lead. This is Patrick Mahomes level
timeline vegaries that we've gotten this year. So I've actually

(10:02):
enjoyed that part of it. It's a lot of creativity.
It's not Joe Burrow level. I mean, I'm just trying
to save you from the internet.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
Man.

Speaker 4 (10:09):
The Internet is really sensitive today, really sensitive, very sensitive. Okay,
between getting mad at Tony and the fight over orange
pants and now there's a Matt Lee controversy. I'm just
trying to I'm trying to keep everybody out of the
shark infested internet water today.

Speaker 1 (10:26):
I think if there's something that we need to do,
we do need to heed words from Joe Burrow and
is that you got to stop caring what other people think.
I think that's where I'm at with it. That Burrow
told us that I like that, I love Zaz stop
caring what other people think think, And I've lived that
model for a while. Yeah, it's a quarter to three.
Paul Danner Juniors here joins us.

Speaker 4 (10:46):
Usually on Tuesdays, obviously with the Bengals practicing yesterday, we
are here today.

Speaker 3 (10:51):
It's Wednesday.

Speaker 4 (10:52):
Bengals off to Chicago, playing the Bears on Saturday after
a joint practice tomorrow. The game on Saturday Live on
ESPN fifteen thirty kicks off at one o'clock. Pregame coverage
starts at nine oh five. There was a lot of
other really interesting stuff from yesterday. Paul also has at
the Athletic dot Com a fifty three man roster projection, which,
since it's not cut down day, isn't final. No things

(11:13):
could change, Yeah they're expected to. Yeah, things could change,
but we are going to spend some time on it.
And I need Paul's take on the simmering orange pants
debate that has enveloped the entire state of Ohio.

Speaker 6 (11:26):
I love orange pants debate.

Speaker 4 (11:28):
It is sixteen minutes after three o'clock. He's a Paul
Danner Junior almogger. This is ESPN fifteen thirty, Cincinnati Sports
Station three, ESPN fifteen to thirty.

Speaker 3 (11:38):
Moegger.

Speaker 4 (11:38):
Paul Danner Junior is here on a lot of different
Bengals issues, the Athletic dot Com and the Growler Podcast.

Speaker 3 (11:47):
Was I the most recent.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
One yes, yes, Jane and I have a camp report
it from yesterday.

Speaker 3 (11:53):
But you don't have to do camp reports when they
don't practice.

Speaker 1 (11:57):
No, Now, we leave that to Look, I'm not gonna
try to infringe on Tony's breastand that's his deal.

Speaker 6 (12:03):
Yeah, that's it.

Speaker 4 (12:03):
Yeah, the Jake Browning news yesterday he's gonna miss some
time with a rib issue. First of all, did that
contribute to him playing like the guy that I thought
we were gonna see when he had to play last
year on Saturday Night?

Speaker 3 (12:18):
I don't think so.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
Otherwise, it lingered on through a practice.

Speaker 6 (12:23):
I mean he was out there Monday.

Speaker 3 (12:26):
Logan Woodside gonna be the backup week one.

Speaker 1 (12:28):
Hey, Logan Woodside firing dimes into the to the sideline
to Burten for touchdown.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
Uh huh.

Speaker 1 (12:34):
I mean you're see a lot of Woodside guys. This
is it man, Logan Woodside day. That's right, that's what
you got. This was like when I got to Fantasy
Camp and I got to pitch. Yeah, well that might
be actually if Rocky Lombardy gets saved in all respect
to Rocky, but I've seen enough snaps to know that
that's probably be more yours.

Speaker 6 (12:55):
Yeah, sure, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (12:57):
Logan Woodside has bounced around the NF. You know what
it is?

Speaker 1 (13:01):
Startling forget bounced carved out an NFL. I mean it's
from he's gotten paid from seventh round pick. The CUI
thing here is a rookie to now can still in
the league.

Speaker 3 (13:12):
I gotta go do that.

Speaker 1 (13:13):
I've been meaning to go back and look at how
many seventh round picks from his draft are still in
the league. I need to go back and do that. Okay,
I'm gonna do that, right, I'm gonna do it. The
next break, I'm gonna.

Speaker 3 (13:22):
Say, yeah, that's not gonna.

Speaker 6 (13:24):
It's not gonna.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
We have we have the tools available. Tools I want to.
I want to. I like to focus on our conversation.

Speaker 6 (13:30):
I'm not gonna fade off into the distance.

Speaker 4 (13:32):
So Joe Burrow like takes a hit and he's got
to miss a series week one. Do I have to
think that might be Logan Woodside.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
I don't think so. Okay, I mean we're still a month.
I mean, I know it's just depressed. We've got a
lot of time to go. Oh we do we? I
mean when when we're in orange pants world and we
look and we see a ly four like four weeks
goodness till we get to that opener. So yeah, no,

(14:02):
we've got a ways to go, I think, Browning, I
think the hope is that everything will be okay by
that point.

Speaker 4 (14:08):
All right, so lots of different stuff, I guess it.
So much has happened since you and I podcasted your
the Grawlar podcast Balls Don't Lie and focused a lot
on a Marius mems in the fallout from that. I'm
gonna give Trent brown Here the benefit of the doubt.
I he was kind of a wet blanket when he
talked last week. Yeah, time has sort of run together, Yes, right,

(14:31):
but okay, fine, in the role that he was brought
here to play, can he get himself to a point
where he could be serviceable week one?

Speaker 3 (14:42):
Yes, the answer should be yes.

Speaker 6 (14:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
I mean at the end of the day, I mean
he's he was nonchalant about it because he's kind of
like men's is a little.

Speaker 3 (14:51):
Well, too cool for school. This is what I've been
doing my whole life.

Speaker 1 (14:54):
Yeah, I kind of don't really necessarily do all the things,
and you're not gonna be you know, and have all
that stuff. And I go out there and guess what
you know who I've been when I've played in games,
and I think his point is I can get to
that level that I've played in games before in the
next month without a problem.

Speaker 4 (15:09):
He won't be the guy that like when they do
the huddle before the game and the NFL films boom
microphone operators dipping his mic into the huddle. That won't
be Trent Brown leading the chorus. But he could play
at a decent enough level that were like I said yesterday,
if you went around the league and said back up

(15:29):
right tackle or Trent Brown, your backup right tackle or
Trent Brown, I think most coaches, most GMS, most offensive
line coaches would say, I'll take Trent Brown.

Speaker 3 (15:38):
Yeah, so that's plan B. That's okay, Yeah, you.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
Would prefer that. There weren't phrases like you know, what
is he north of three years seventy sixty five. I'm
taking a leap of faith here, I admit that, but
but I think that's again, that's the Trent We're living
the Trent Brown experience. This has been his reputation and
his other side of his reputation, beyond you know, having

(16:04):
issues with Wade and then playing all the time and
he's had lots of injuries, has been when he has
been out there, he's been pretty good, especially enough on
an Island. And last year you could see those numbers
kind of play themselves out. And and now he's gonna
have theoretically a month of reps next to Alex Kappa
and with the first team line to get fully up

(16:27):
to speed on on all the Bengals calls and chemistry and.

Speaker 6 (16:31):
All that stuff.

Speaker 1 (16:32):
And and you know, let's let's not forget some of
the people that have managed this position in recent years,
and they've been able to get by just fine. I
think Trent Brown is at the very least at or
above that level today.

Speaker 3 (16:47):
I hate this for Marius Mems more than anything else.

Speaker 1 (16:50):
Yeah, you do all everything right, Yeah, you come in
and you're just killing it. And everybody now just is like,
you're the starter, right. I mean to the point that
even with the injury, they're like, ah, you know what,
if he comes back, I think we still might want
to be the starter like he really could.

Speaker 6 (17:07):
And I think that's as encouraging of a sign as
you can have.

Speaker 1 (17:09):
And I we talked about this in the pop but
I am really curious to see how they manage that
if he comes back in week two, three or four, whatever,
and they you have to are you just gonna replace
Trent Brown or are you gonna do?

Speaker 3 (17:21):
But that'd be fascinating. But to get himself to that
level that we're.

Speaker 1 (17:24):
Talking about him that way speaks to how impressive he
has been since showing up.

Speaker 6 (17:30):
I you know, these.

Speaker 1 (17:34):
Snaps, this joint practice and whatever he was gonna do
in the games and then next week against the culture
was gonna be so critical he was gonna go up
against big time addressers, real starters because he hasn't. He's
done that sum here obviously, but not a ton you had,
Hubbard and Hendrickson have been out.

Speaker 6 (17:53):
They haven't lined up in front of.

Speaker 1 (17:54):
Him, and so you get you were gonna have that,
and now to not have that for a guy who
you wanted to see that next level of experience, you
still believe in him, That's that stinks, and that's something
that everybody would have been much more comfortable with.

Speaker 6 (18:07):
But you know, this is this is it.

Speaker 4 (18:10):
As it relates to last Saturday night with Jermaine Burton.
What should be the bigger takeaway what we saw him
do when he got on the field or how long
it took for him to get on the field.

Speaker 6 (18:21):
Yeah, that's the thing, isn't it.

Speaker 3 (18:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (18:23):
I mean I have a cup two mottos that I
follow in the NFL. Follow the money, follow the reps. Always,
that's where the truth lives. The truth always lives in
the money and the reps. So don't listen no word
that you're told, don't listen to press, don't follow the money,

(18:43):
follow the reps. So when Jermaine Burton had five reps
through three quarters of a preseason opener against Chicago, that
was a major red flag Tampa Bay. Yeah, thank you,
I'm already thinking about Chicago, Tampa Bay. But when that
was a major red and he comes in and makes
a couple of plays and is good, like he's what

(19:05):
you would expect a guy of his talent level to
be against guys of well that talent level.

Speaker 3 (19:11):
Right that we're out there for Tampa.

Speaker 1 (19:14):
But and then what do you hear afterwards from Joe
Burrow needs to get his head in the playbook, so
couldn't get on the field. He needs to get his
head in the playbook. From the quarterback. How many times
have I sat in front of this microphone and we've
talked about. Trust with Joe Burrow is the absolute most
important quantity of anything you can have in that building,

(19:36):
and you know he's got to go gain that. He
needs to make big strides in that department, it seems,
I mean, that's that's the way it certainly sounds. In
order to be trusted by Joe Burrow, and that's the
only way he gets on the field, you know, because
if if nine doesn't trust you, they can't put you

(19:56):
out there because he won't. He won't tolerate that. When
there's other guys he does trust, they'd have to sit
down in order to do that. He has clearly all
the physical abilities in the world. But the snap count,
to me was a much bigger deal than the two plays.
We knew he could make those plays. Yeah, right, The
fact that they don't view him as being trusted to

(20:17):
even be out there. Amrius Mims was starting, yes, okay,
playing the whole like that's the deal, okay. And meanwhile,
you have another guy who you maybe thought was going
to be a part of your offensive profile this year,
not even getting into the game until when all.

Speaker 3 (20:35):
The scrubs come in the fourth quarter.

Speaker 4 (20:36):
Well and plays a position where they're loaded, yes, loaded
with guys that Okay, we know Jamar and t but
beyond that that, Joe Burrow has expressed very explicitly that
he has trust in who might not have the same
athletic profile as Jermaine Burton, but has, in Trent Irwin's case,
has an established track record of obtaining Joe Burrow's trust.

(20:59):
And andre Yoshabas's case, you know, he's been here and
and Joe has gone out of his way to talk
about how much he trusts Andre. So when you play
that position and you don't have the quarterbacks trust, that
doesn't strike me as something you're going to be able
to gain in a couple of throwing sessions or a
couple of good practices, in large part because that trust
factor with those other guys isn't going to go away. Yeah, exactly.

(21:22):
And and he's got to do it on the field.

Speaker 1 (21:25):
And if he's so far off that they can't even
get him in for a half a series or some
kind of package, at this point, you know, when the
season starts, you don't get reps with Joe, right, Yeah,
you don't, not if you're a sixth receiver on the
roster and so that becomes a lot hard. This was
that this is a time to be building that. So

(21:48):
finding that trust is going to be a big part.
And I mean it's not just talking about guys like
Andre and Charlie Jones or whatever. I mean, you're no
disrespect Kendrick Pryor and shed Je and Kwame Lasseter, but you're.

Speaker 3 (22:02):
Behind those guys.

Speaker 1 (22:03):
Yeah yeah, So I mean, and we're not talking about
a sixth round pick. We are talking to Day two guy,
Day two first round talent, raving about his physical ability
and what he could be for a while now. So yeah,
I think big time red flag moment on the snap
count more so than the plays because just because I

(22:25):
think we've seen the plays before.

Speaker 4 (22:27):
All right, I have like one, two, three, four or five,
so like nine other things.

Speaker 1 (22:32):
Well, we got time, we do not much. We have

round line. I like a good lightning round.

Speaker 4 (22:37):
Okay, we're pretty good at all right, this is gonna
be a long lightning round, Okay.

Speaker 3 (22:41):
Next.

With us for another few minutes.

Speaker 1 (23:56):
I don't I hope Arren it's not just McCarthy. Addison
off on a cart today too. In the same day. Oh,
I probably shouldn't have brought it up, because Terrence gotta
get through this hole he go to get to the
show and stuff.

Speaker 6 (24:07):
Yeah, now I might have ruined that.

Speaker 4 (24:09):
Sorry, well you're responsible now, Yeah, I know Terrence performance
on me.

Speaker 3 (24:14):
Rest of the way.

Speaker 4 (24:15):
You did a fifty three man roster projection, what was
the position that.

Speaker 1 (24:20):
Was toughest offensive line to the point that I, you know,
wrote more about it the day before. I was gonna
have the fifty three out on my whenever the day
of the MEMS injury, and there was so much to
dive into in that room on top of the MEMS injury,
I was like, I need space for this, like, and

(24:40):
we had Frank Pollack doing dancing bear conversations and all
that stuff was happening, and so I was like, I
did that needs It's it's really complicated, you know. I mean,
they could keep any number of guys I think, you know,
your top seven, but then they could keep eight, nine, ten,
They could keep a couple of undrafted guys, Jackson, Carmen,

(25:02):
thing happens, you've got you know, just there.

Speaker 6 (25:06):
It's just all over the map.

Speaker 1 (25:07):
And you know, the word open mindedness was used by
Zach Taylor to my question about it. That's gonna be
some open mind is happening back there, otherwise known as
it's absolutely wide open at all those positions beyond that
type types I've include including how many are actually gonna
they're actually gonna keep at all? So that was the hardest.

(25:30):
And defensive line is no picnicking. They have eleven defensive tackles.
When you wrote that, like I mean literally like took
a step back. It's unbelievable. And and and there's just
they just have all of these guys that they're just
thrown into the mix, especially with the McKinley Jackson injury,
Like they don't have any big other big body guys.
I think Davis hasn't been out there, and and and

(25:52):
they just they're looking for anything to help with that.
And then it's certainly not helped when you have the
game happen on Saturday and you see plays where Zach
Carter and Chris Jenkins are just getting you know, washed
out of the middle or pancaked out of the way,
and Zach Carter not to be.

Speaker 3 (26:10):
Not that that wasn't expected.

Speaker 4 (26:11):
I was really disappointed relative to my expectations in Chris Jenkins.

Speaker 1 (26:17):
Yeah, you know what, though, I think a guy in
his first NFL experience ever, I tend to give a
loose give benefit of the doubt too.

Speaker 3 (26:30):
I was disappointed in that performance.

Speaker 1 (26:33):
Agreed, Yeah, I think you expected more and didn't expect
to see, you know, a five yard touchdown run where
he's on the other hash with a guy on top
of him, like and even in his first experience. And
there's plenty of time, you know, you learn, you learn stuff,
you figure it out as you go, and they're going
to be counting on that. But there were some moments

(26:55):
from Chris in that game that were very disappointing starting spot.
And so you just by the time you get to
this week and next, you can start to kund him
because he's need to be part of that rotation and
and you just start to wonder how they're gonna stop
the run because you don't have DJ Reader and you

(27:16):
are hoping that Jenkins could be a part of that answer.
You don't have a big body guy that you can
lean on. I mean, you have Jackson, the ninety seventh
overall pick who's hurt. Like, I mean, there's there's a
lot of questions there in terms of what that's going
to look like. And so you you you would like
to see a little bit more progress. I think that

(27:36):
you can get some positive contribution there.

Speaker 4 (27:39):
I think the thing that maybe has stood out to
me when I combined what I watched on Saturday with
reading your roster projection is there is an abundance of
riches in the secondary.

Speaker 3 (27:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (27:52):
You know what though, And and I really I really
like talking to Dax after a game on Saturday because
and that's why, you know, I kind of put him
in the category after the game of a guy that
made me think more because I don't think we expected
him to look that good at outside corner, but there

(28:14):
were still some of those extra mistakes like that deep
not being able to locate. We've I've seen that a
lot in practice from him, and just stuff where you're
just not quite making the play even though you're in
position and that, and he kind of talked about that
like that's where he's at where he feels like he's
good and comfortable at a lot of the hardest stuff,

(28:34):
but that extra little bit that is just instincts of
a corner of when to turn and put your hand
up and win to knock the ball out, and like
that stuff you build over time playing that specific position.
He's still getting there and that was an example of
it on that play. But he's right there and that's
incur really, I mean a really really encouraged No, not

(28:55):
at all.

Speaker 6 (28:56):
No, you need to see more.

Speaker 1 (28:57):
You need to see it our starters and a and
we've you know, we seen in camp days where you
know guys have beat him and you expect that. But
I yeah, I thought that was a really encouraging first
performance from him. And he is very understanding of what
the next step needs to be in the type of
place he needs to be able to make. But the
fact that he's in good position, looks looks comfortable, says

(29:21):
he's comfortable, was a big deal because now you feel
better about everything. Josh Newton, Yeah, you know you feel bad, man,
Josh Newton.

Speaker 3 (29:27):
That guy would be a great fifth corner.

Speaker 1 (29:29):
Yes, you know what I mean, Like, that's a great
fifth corner to have you had him.

Speaker 3 (29:33):
I think with the second you graded all the rookies.

Speaker 4 (29:36):
Yeah, well all the draft picks, and I think he
had the second highest grade after Marius if I'm not
If I'm not mistaken. Yeah, one of the stories of camp,
that's your fifth corner, Yeah, dude.

Speaker 1 (29:45):
And he seems to make a play every practice and
then then obviously gets the interception in the game, and
that's just been consistent. He's he's tenacious, he's confident, he's
sticky as a corner, like he's right there all the time,
and he just makes He's always making plays around the football,
and you know he's gonna have he has a ways

(30:06):
to go as a rookie in general, to get out
there and actually do it. But you know, I think
it's really encouraging with where all those guys are at.

Speaker 6 (30:14):
They were banking on that.

Speaker 1 (30:16):
We spent a lot of time talking about veteran corners
and how they can maybe add one. And I think
you don't feel that way after what has happened the
first seeks to camp, because you can go with the
young guys comfortably.

Speaker 3 (30:25):
I've got like ninety seconds. Yes, is the punter battle over?

Speaker 6 (30:28):
I don't think so.

Speaker 3 (30:29):
I think this is more variables mo now it's like, well,
how long un till this hit flex That's the thing.

Speaker 4 (30:35):
When I saw yesterday Brad Robbins is walking off the field,
he's got a hip flex er.

Speaker 3 (30:40):
My thought is punter battle over.

Speaker 6 (30:43):
Maybe I don't.

Speaker 1 (30:44):
I mean, I think there's enough on tape, you know
enough about Brad Robbins level that you still are going
to have it up to Rico to either go above
it or below it over the next couple of weeks
and in these last two games, and then Darren Simmons
has a decision to make assuming that Brad, if you're
assuming that he would be fully healthy and recovered by

(31:05):
the time.

Speaker 3 (31:06):
The Why do you hate Matt Lee?

Speaker 6 (31:10):
Just hate him? No?

Speaker 1 (31:12):
At least fine he's been. He hasn't been running with
the second team. Trey Hill has been running with the
second team until he played in Game one against in
the fourth and with the Scrubs and seem to do
okay there, and then now he rotated in a little
bit the last practice along with Trey Hills. They start
moving guys around to get a better look at him.

(31:34):
I don't hate him, okay, he could very easily.

Speaker 6 (31:36):
Make the team.

Speaker 3 (31:37):
He just hasn't been in front of Trey Hill at
this point, I understand that seems fair.

Speaker 6 (31:40):
Totally. Yeah, I apologize.

Speaker 4 (31:43):
Are two teams in the same state both allowed to
have orange pants?

Speaker 6 (31:47):
No, you can't.

Speaker 1 (31:49):
I think the NFL should actually have not let anyone
have the same colored pants. All thirty two teams should
have different colors and shades.

Speaker 3 (31:58):
We're gonna have to go deep into the box of crayons, right,
get get the get the big Crayola pack out.

Speaker 1 (32:04):
Okay, where you can say it's specifically a different shade.
I think I think we've come far enough that we
can make this, that we should make this happen and
just put up absolute rule no color sharing amongst pants
in the NFL.

Speaker 4 (32:17):
What's the schedule next week? Like, what's they got a
game on Thursday? So joint practice on Tuesday?

Speaker 6 (32:23):
Yes, okay, so Wednesday. We will be back back on Wednesday.

Speaker 3 (32:26):
It will be a lot to discuss. There's a lot
of stuff that's gonna happen in a short amount of time.

Speaker 1 (32:30):
There is, and then there's stuff that we haven't even
thought about that's gonna happen.

Speaker 3 (32:34):
Oh oh, I can't wait.

Speaker 1 (32:36):
Maybe maybe Jamar Chase will be back in a hat,
or maybe he'll just be like hanging out on the
street corner trying to get Joe Burrow's autograph with the
fans or something that'd be fun. You're taking video content.
At least he's not l o ling the owner on
Twitter yet.

Speaker 6 (32:49):
Yeah. Yet, you never know. You never know.

Speaker 4 (32:54):
Paul tannergan to read him in the Athletic ny Times
dot com as well, and get the podcast the Groular podcast.

Speaker 3 (32:59):
Most version had me on it.

Speaker 4 (33:01):
Balls Don't Lie, and Paul is also podcasting daily after
a training camp with a Jay Morrison, Thank.

Speaker 3 (33:07):
You, sir, Thank you, Tony Pike next to the SPN
fifteen thirty way back in nineteen thirty nine, Emery Federal.

Speaker 2 (33:12):
Training Camp report Brook to you bar Kemba Credit Union
on ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home of the Bengals.

Speaker 4 (33:22):
So the Bengals are traveling to Chicago today, which means
they're not practicing, which means Tony Pike is not a practice,
which means he can't be negative.

Speaker 3 (33:30):
He can't give us observations.

Speaker 4 (33:31):
About which players are maybe having a bad day, which
players are maybe struggling a little bit to get through camp.
So instead you're here with me in studio and we
can perhaps talk about some things from a positive perspective, Tony.

Speaker 8 (33:43):
Yeah, really positivity, because what's I guess now understood by
me is that a player having a bad day or
bad couple days means that I think the player's terrible
or has headed bad camp in general. Right, So we
are let's let's try at least for this to be
positive today.

Speaker 4 (33:58):
Well, I don't want you going down to try and
can practice, and I don't want you observing and then reporting.
I want you there and making things up just to
make me feel good.

Speaker 8 (34:07):
Okay, my job now, because we go from training reports
to what season previews?

Speaker 3 (34:12):
Season previews?

Speaker 8 (34:12):
Yeah, I just want to make sure, whether it's what
I see or not, that I'm doing the good job
of making sure that you're confident in what the Bengals
are doing.

Speaker 4 (34:19):
Well, I tell you what I am confident in. I'm
confident in some things I saw and you and I
haven't had a ton of time to talk about the
preseason game last Saturday, and obviously the focus is shifting
to what's happening on not just the practice field in
Chicago tomorrow, but obviously the game against the Bears on Saturday.
But let's kind of work our way through some things
that happen. I think on defense on Saturday that we're

(34:40):
very encouraging and maybe get your thoughts on how those
things might translate to the season.

Speaker 3 (34:44):
Let's begin with Dax Hil.

Speaker 4 (34:45):
Yeah, right, Dax Zel, it kind of felt like he
was a little bit behind DJ Turner. I think he
made a pretty big statement on Saturday night.

Speaker 8 (34:51):
Yeah, for much of camp it felt like DJ Turner
was winning the battle because of what Dax Hill was doing.
Seemingly every offensive high like you saw from a practice standpoint,
it was against Dax Hill. And then you forget he
is changing a position from safety to corner, which I
think corner defensively is the hardest position in the NFL. Obviously,

(35:11):
I think quarterback is the toughest, but I think corner
is one of the hardest positions to play. You have
to drop into coverage, you've got to go man, you
don't know what the receiver's gonna do. You're responsible for
so many things, and Dax Hill showed Saturday that he
is improving. And I think if you're lu Ana Rumo,
when you decided to make the move, you knew there

(35:32):
was going to be some growing pains early. If he
continues to improve, he's gonna make this a legitimate conversation
on who's going to be corner number two when you
break from training camp. And let's also not look past
the fact that there are just guys out there that
are gamers that when the lights come on on the
biggest stages, they play their best. Maybe they don't bring
it every day at practice, and that's something he's got
to improve. I thought he looked the part in one

(35:55):
opportunity in a preseason game against Tampa.

Speaker 4 (35:57):
Let's stay in the secondary. It was not a perfect
night for Josh Newton, but I thought it encouraging one.

Speaker 8 (36:02):
I think Josh Newton, outside of Amarius Mims, who's now injured,
is the most impressive rookie that the Bengals have. I
thought Chris Jenkins had some growing pains on the defensive
line against Tampa. I don't think he looked all that great.
Jermaine Burton. I think the Bengals showed you where he's
at right now when they used him, and Joe Burrow
after the game said so very impressive. Lot of talent

(36:25):
needs to get into his playbook. Eric All, I think
is going to be a guy that has upside. McKinley
Jackson hasn't practiced much. Josh Newton man, he talks, he
backs it up. He carries himself with a certain swagger
that you have to at that position because you are
going to get beat more times than not. You have
to have that ability to bounce back. And he is
now put together, which I think is big for a rookie.

(36:47):
Consistent good practices, yep, learning more of the playbooks being
thrown at you. You're going to a game setting, practices
are changing. He's answered the bell seemingly every time. I've
been very impressed with Josh Newton.

Speaker 4 (36:59):
What was interesting thing about the conversations we were having
a year ago is we weren't talking all that much
about the twenty twenty three first round pick Miles Murphy.

Speaker 3 (37:08):
That has changed this summer.

Speaker 8 (37:10):
Yeah, showed glimpses towards the end of last year. I
just think defensive end, unless you are like one of
the generational talents, is a very hard position to come
in as a rookie and learn right. You're going against
guys that are now just as fast as you, guys
that are strong. I mean, think of coming into the NFL.
You play in college and you're going up against a
size guy like Orlando Brown or Trent Brown. That's different,

(37:33):
different feeling when you're going into that. So I think
there were growing pains where he could get by with
maybe just speed when he was at Clemson, or one
or two moves in his repertoire. You need much more
than that, and you're not just being asked to get
after the quarterback. You're being asked to stop the run
to set the edge. I think all that stuff takes time.
He stayed with it. He finished the season really well

(37:53):
last year, and he's had opportunities because Sam Hubbard has
missed a majority of camp, Tre Hendrickson's missed him camp
to get a lot of reps. I think he's made
the most of them.

Speaker 4 (38:01):
All Right, Tony, awesome stuff. Have you back coming up
at five forty five. Don't forget Bengals Bears Saturday Live
on ESPN fifteen thirty, kickoff at one pregame coverage at
nine ozho five. I am extraordinarily late. Let's put an
end to this Jamar Chase thing. There's a very easy
way to do it. Let's get it done.

Speaker 3 (38:16):
Next. This report is sponsored by Bank of America.

Speaker 1 (38:20):
Think of America has powerful digital solutions for local and
global businesses.

Speaker 9 (38:25):
ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station.

Speaker 4 (38:29):
So I just you know, I took a glance here
at what's happening on the internet right now, and yesterday
during the show, people were fighting about orange pants. So
the Bengals are going to have a game where they
wear orange pants this year, which awesome, fine, Like I

(38:50):
have for years wish the Bengals would lean into orange more.
Why because Bengals Tigers, Bengals Tigers, Bengal Tigers are orange.

Speaker 3 (38:57):
They're not black, they're more maybe more white, They're orange.
Lean into the orange more. So they're gonna have orange
pants for a game this year.

Speaker 4 (39:05):
And if this is the sort of thing that interests you,
then great, And if it's not, then that's okay too.

Speaker 3 (39:12):
But they're gonna have orange pants.

Speaker 4 (39:15):
I guess brown some Browns fans are not happy about
this because the Browns have orange pants already. And then
there's this whole thing about, well, the the Bengals sort
of co op the Brown's uniform look back in the
day when Paul Brown founded the Bengals. So we're gonna

(39:36):
have orange two teams fighting over orange pants. I think
it's okay for multiple teams to have orange pants, even
if they're in the same state. Pole question thanks to
this is the important stuff that we get into on
this show. At United Heartland Insurance, is it okay for
two NFL teams to have from the same state to
both have the same colored pants? Vote now at Moegger

(39:59):
United Heartley Insurance. If your pants need insurance, go there
uhions dot com. Or if your house needs insurance, your car,
your boat, your motorcycle, your life, whatever you could get insured.
They can insure it for you in any part of town.
Uhis dot com. Vote on the poll question at Moegger
Is it okay if two NFL teams from the same

(40:21):
state both have the same colored pants? Very early voting
thirty percent say no. Right now, what people are fighting
about on the internet is a fall weddings. I don't
know that I have the energy.

Speaker 6 (40:33):
I don't know.

Speaker 4 (40:35):
It feels like the Twitter see the last forty eight
hours has been quite angry.

Speaker 3 (40:39):
I don't know why.

Speaker 4 (40:42):
We're gonna thank Barry Larkin in a bit for what
he said during last night's TV broadcast of the Reds
victory over the Cardinals. Hunter Green was outstanding. He threw
up again, threw up in his glove, which gross but cool.
I love watching him pitch. There is a reminder we
have to issue if you're a Reds fan. Will do
that a little bit later on Awesome stuff from Paul
Danner Junior. If you missed it, it'll be available on

(41:03):
the iHeartRadio app, also on the podcast page VESPN fifteen
thirty dot com. Our podcasts are a service of a
Long Neck Sports Grill, which is the best place on
earth to go for football games. And there are three locations.
You got Wilder, you got Hebring, you got Richwood, Long
Neck Sports Grill. And even though school districts like to

(41:24):
convince the rest of us that summer is over because
for some reason school has to start, there are still
weeks left on the calendar, weeks of summer left on
the calendar. And there's no better place to go on
a beautiful summer night than the patio at Long Next
where you could post up, have a cold one and
watch whatever you want to watch.

Speaker 6 (41:43):
There you go.

Speaker 4 (41:44):
So the Jamar Chase thing yesterday it took a turn.
The Jamar Chase thing pivoted from something that was kind
of this nice hold in to maybe something a little
bit different now. Is Jamar sending a message I don't know.
Is Jamar indicating that he's willing to miss games. Is
Jamar indicating that perhaps a deal with the Bengals is close?

Speaker 3 (42:08):
None of us. None of us know. Here's what I
do know.

Speaker 4 (42:11):
I think Zach Taylor is in a very very tough
position where he's got to answer questions about something that
he really doesn't have anything to do with. He can't
sign Jamar Chase to a new contract. He needs Jamar
Chase on the field. He wants a great relationship with

(42:32):
the player. He understands the player's frustration, maybe to a degree.
He understands where ownership and where management are coming from.
Zach is stuck in the middle. He's the only one
that has to make a statement. Zach Taylor had to
make a statement yesterday about Jamar Chase. I'm not sure
he really had to, but he did, and so he's
kind of stuck in the middle. I have maintained all along.

(42:55):
I understand the Bengals point of view here. Jamar's got
two left on his deal. What's the rush, right? Like
a lot of stuff can happen. What's the rush? And
I understand anybody using any tactic they can that's within
the rules to get more money, get better employment terms.
So I can't be mad at Jamar Chase. But there

(43:16):
are people in the middle. Tony Pike was on our
show yesterday as he's going to be coming up in
about thirty five minutes, and whether you liked what he
said or not, he painted a picture of frustration. And
I would be willing to bet there's some frustration coming
from the players, the rank and file, the coaching staff,
and the head coach over a lot of different things.

(43:39):
The Marius Mims thing is frustrating. It's frustrating for Marius Mims.
It's frustrating for the team. Some of the other injury
issues that have taken place, probably also the Jamar Chase
situation not having at least as of this moment, any
kind of resolution. Do you think Joe Burrow would prefer
the Jamar Chase practice or not practice. Do you think

(44:00):
Dan Pitcher, a new offensive coordinator, would prefer the Jamar
Chase practice or not practice. Do you think Zach Taylor
would prefer the Jamar Chase practice or not practice? And practice,
maybe selectively getting veterans days off and monitoring his work
like they do with all the other veteran players. But
do you think they want this guy on the sideline?

(44:20):
Do you think they want these questions to linger? Do
you think they want the uncertainty? Of course not, of
course not. They don't want any of that stuff. So
you have Jamar doing what he is doing. Meanwhile, you
have some dynamics that make this a unique situation. One
of those dynamics is you didn't pay T Higgins right, wrong, whatever,

(44:44):
they didn't pay T Higgins. Why did they not pay
T Higgins? They didn't pay T. Higgins because they want
to pay Jamar Chase. Not exactly breaking new ground here,
am I. But that's why T. Higgins is gonna walk
at the end of the season, because they want to
give that much I need to Jamar Chase. They don't
want to tie a huge amount of dough into one position.

(45:05):
So they're not gonna do what the Miami Dolphins have done.
They're gonna say goodbye to T. Higgins at the end
of the season. God knows what happens at wide receiver,
and they're gonna pay Jamar Chase if that's not the
plan moving forward, Then why didn't they sign t Higgins?

Speaker 3 (45:21):
Right?

Speaker 4 (45:21):
So there's that. There's also Mike Brown's public statements. He
doesn't make many, but as public statements were, we're gonna
bend over backward. He's our second best player. We're gonna
bend over backwards to sign Jamar Chase. So let's just
get this done. I I know there's more nuance to

(45:46):
it than that I do. I get it, and I'd
be the first to roll my eyes at the insistence
that they just pay Jamar because again, there is nuance
to it. And I get frustrated when people default to
the position of the Bengals are screwing Jamar Chase. I
don't think they're screwing Jamar Chase. I think they're doing

(46:10):
what a lot of teams might do. They're doing what
my employer would do. Hey, I get two years left,
but can I have a new contract?

Speaker 6 (46:15):
Well?

Speaker 3 (46:16):
Yeah, eventually, but what's the rush. But in the middle,
here is a team that has legitimate Super Bowl hopes.
Call me a homer for saying it, if you want,
but legitimate super Bowl hopes, Like, is it far fetched
to suggest the Bengals could win the Super Bowl this year.
Of course not. Maybe they're not the favorite, maybe you

(46:36):
don't think they will, but there haven't been many seasons
in my lifetime.

Speaker 4 (46:41):
We're in August. You can make the case the Bengals
could win the whole thing. We can do it right now.
It is a critical year for Joe Burrow. It is
a critical year for this franchise. Like they can do
it this season. And if they can do it this season,
think of all the residual benefits for the head coach,

(47:01):
the assistant coaches, the quarterback, everybody involved. Is the Jamar
Chase situation changing.

Speaker 3 (47:09):
That, No, But does it feel like it's just for
the moment kind of in the way.

Speaker 4 (47:19):
If you're the owner of the team, get it out
of the way. You said you're gonna pay him, pay him.
Not because they're treating Jamar Chase unfairly.

Speaker 6 (47:29):
They're not.

Speaker 4 (47:30):
Because it's unfair for Zach Taylor to have to be
stuck in the middle of this, and it's unfair for
the players to have to prepare for a season dealing
with the questions about what's gonna happen with Jamar and
maybe some built in uncertainty about whether or not Jamar's
gonna play the first game. One of the most uncomfortable

(47:50):
things you could deal with is uncertainty. Get rid of
the uncertainty. There doesn't seem to be any uncertainty as
to whether or not Jamar Chase is going to play
for the Bengals beyond twenty twenty five. Everybody seems to
accept the deal's gonna get done at some point. So
if it's gonna get done at some point, how about this.
How about you put your head coach in the best

(48:10):
possible position to do his job, which means, you know what, Zach,
You're not gonna have to worry about this Jamar Chase
thing anymore because the Jamar Chase thing is done. And Joe,
you know what, you're practicing? You want Jamar in the
practice field? Cool, We're gonna get this done. It is
the responsibility of any leader to put his or her

(48:31):
most valuable employees, but all of their employees really in
a position where they can succeed. Is this situation putting
everybody in the best position to succeed?

Speaker 3 (48:44):
The answer is no, get this done. You already said
you were, You've you've stated publicly. I have never heard
or read Mike Brown, with a direct quote contributed to
him talk about how a player is going to get
signed and how he's going to go overboard to sign him.

(49:08):
Bend over backwards. That was his verbiage, Like what are
we doing here?

Speaker 4 (49:15):
I understand, I understand there's financial considerations here that the
guaranteed money. Okay, so you give Jamar his deal, the
guaranteed money's locked in, and something bad happens, you can.

Speaker 3 (49:26):
Win the title this year.

Speaker 4 (49:30):
The best environment for a team that has legit title hopes.

Speaker 3 (49:37):
Does not include uncertainty. It should be worth something to
you to put Zach Taylor in the best position he
can be in to do his job, which shouldn't be
having to answer questions about your March Chase excuse me,
or even worry about Jamar Chase, Like, just get rid
of this thing that's there. Do I think it's a
distraction that's gonna derail the season.

Speaker 6 (49:59):
No.

Speaker 4 (50:00):
I believe everything that has been said about Bengals culture
for years. I believe that does start with the coach.
I believe it obviously includes the influence of the quarterback.

Speaker 3 (50:10):
I believe those things. But you've got this just thing
sitting there and it doesn't seem to be. It doesn't
seem to be benefiting anybody, right. It's not benefiting Zach,
it's not benefiting Joe. It's not benefiting anybody on the team.
It's not benefiting the coaching staff. It's not benefiting you
and I as fans. Not benefiting anybody. I'm not sure
how much it's benefiting Jamar Chase. So you've got something

(50:33):
happening right now that's benefiting no one. Get rid of it.
Get the deal done, Get the deal done. You said
you were going to get the deal done. Like at
some point, any situation like this needs the adult to go. Look,
we're not doing this anymore. Okay, screw this, let's end it.
Let's move on.

Speaker 5 (50:54):
Zach.

Speaker 3 (50:55):
You got a hard enough job, as is Joe.

Speaker 4 (50:58):
You got a hard enough job as We have to
figure out away this season to win the toughest division
in football. We have to figure out this season how
to dethrone Patrick Mahomes. We have to figure out this
season how to be better than we were last year
with a defense that has been retooled, but that was
awful last season.

Speaker 3 (51:17):
We've got to figure out how to win with.

Speaker 4 (51:19):
This offensive line being what it is We've got to
figure out how to win, perhaps early in the season
without our first round draft choice.

Speaker 1 (51:25):
What we have in front of us is really hard.
Why make it more difficult. The longer you let this
Jamar Chase thing go, the more difficult you're making this.
This is already going to be hard, but it's doable.
Make it a little bit more doable. Get the deal done.

(51:47):
Certainly there's some framework in place or else. The people
in Bengals management are not doing their jobs, and I
happen to think those people are pretty good at their
jobs when it comes to situations like this.

Speaker 3 (52:01):
Get the deal done and then this goes away.

Speaker 4 (52:05):
Not that there aren't gonna be other issues that the
coaching staff has to deal with, but why have self
created issues when you know winning is hard. It's hard
enough as is. All sorts of stuff is going to
show up on Zach Taylor's desk, All sorts of stuff
are going to pop up as roadblocks to this team
getting to where it wants to go. Why have something

(52:27):
self created? The longer this Jamar Chase thing goes, the
more a self created thing is just in the way.
And by the way, I think this is something we
could say, independent of whether or not Jamorrow was at
practice yesterday, independent of whether or not he's on the
plane today, independent of whether or not he's at the
game on Saturday or the practice in Chicago tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (52:49):
Just get this out of the way.

Speaker 4 (52:52):
Zach Taylor's first season in twenty nineteen was really hard,
and really his first year and a half were really hard.

Speaker 3 (53:00):
And you know, I remember.

Speaker 4 (53:02):
All threat that first year when they were doing the
dog and pony show of is is aj Green gonna
play then? And Zach's having an answer questions about it
every day, and he's got his star player basically refusing
to play. And then there was Andy Dalton's mad because
they're gonna play Ryan Finley and he wants to train.
Like all this stuff was just thrown at Zach Taylor.

(53:23):
And I'm like, year two, throw less stuff at Zach Taylor.
Let him coach the football team, let him bring along
whoever the rookie quarterback is going to be they have
next year, which obviously turned out to be Joe Burrow.
The best and most effective leaders let their employees succeed
and they don't create problems for them. This Jamar Chase

(53:44):
thing is becoming a Bengals created problem because they've said
they're already.

Speaker 3 (53:50):
Gonna sign him.

Speaker 4 (53:52):
So look, I understand there's financial risk, we all do,
but I think that risk is worth taking if if
it makes your coach's job a little bit easier, if
it makes your quarterbacks job a little bit easier.

Speaker 3 (54:06):
At the end of the day, that's what we all want.
It's what we all should be doing.

Speaker 4 (54:09):
Try to make Try to make the people that we
work with and that work for us, not that I
have anybody working for me, try to make their jobs easier.
If their jobs are easier, they do them better, and
if they do them better, then everybody benefits. You are
welcome to tell me that I'm wrong. Five point three
seven four nine, fifteen thirty. This isn't the gratuitous bashing

(54:31):
of Mike Brown, which I do not engage in.

Speaker 3 (54:34):
But the man said, what they're going to do.

Speaker 5 (54:36):
Do it?

Speaker 3 (54:39):
Would that require some flexibility?

Speaker 4 (54:41):
Would that require a willingness to sort of deviate from
their normal way of doing things? One hundred percent do it,
And let's move on with Jamar Chase and let everybody
involved prepare for the season without uncertainty, controversy, chaos, frustration

(55:05):
or whatever. The theme of yesterday was winning is hard enough,
don't make it harder. Get the deal done. You could
send me a tweet on x at moegar thanks to
Delta Dental, which is building healthy, smart, vibrant communities for

(55:26):
all good at Delta Dental, oh dot com. Well update
our Poul question Tony Pike in about twenty minutes. Brendavan
and Jones on baseball as well. Hunter Green awesome last
night and we gotta spend a few minutes on that
out in ESPN fifteen thirty Cincinnati Sports Station Cincinnata's audio from.

Speaker 3 (55:43):
Last night which has made waves, and.

Speaker 4 (55:46):
We have to spend some time on during last night's
Reds game, Reds are going for a sweet tonight, and
I do have good news for you. If you're a
Reds fan, It's worth reminding you of something you're not
gonna want to hear it. If you're caught in the
muck of well, just the misery of a season that
has so far at least seen the Reds lose more
than they have one will update our Pole question. The

(56:08):
different dynamic in all of this is what Mike Brown said.
The different dynamic in this Jamar Chase thing is Mike
Brown saying it's going to get done. If you know
it's going to get done. And in the interim, the
people who work for you have a task that could

(56:28):
define their careers. Like there is so much that hinges
on this season, Why have something get in the way
of it.

Speaker 3 (56:36):
It might be a small something, but just scrape it
off the plate. Let people do their jobs. Make their
jobs as easy as possible. Get rid of this thing.
Draft the contract, get it to Jamar's agent, have them
sign it. Let's all move on four point thirty on

(56:58):
ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 2 (57:02):
There's get it on in the Windy City. Coverage begins
Saturday morning at nine on ESPN fifteen thirty. The official
home of the Bengal.

Speaker 4 (57:10):

Speaker 4 (57:21):
Tarren, you got the memo, more ll Cooljay Bengals off
to Chicago. They'll practice with the Bears tomorrow, then they
have off on Friday, and then they are the are
the Cubs at home this week and the Bengals players
go to Wrigley Field. God knows, you're not going to
go to a White Sox game you ever try to
go to that park.

Speaker 3 (57:39):
Good God, But Wrigley Field is awesome.

Speaker 4 (57:42):
Despite what, like Paul Ryders love to tell you, Wriggleyfield
is still awesome.

Speaker 3 (57:47):
I have no idea if the Cubs are at home.

Speaker 4 (57:49):
I do know the Bengals play the Bears on Friday
at one as that deep voice guy just said. Games
on ESPN fifteen thirty pre game at nine am. Also,
the White Sox are history. Cubs are at home. Yes,
so Bengals players are. Now they're gonna be stuck in
meetings all day. Uh, but they get a day off

(58:10):
at Chicago. Let him go the ball game one on Friday.
Chicago time is the best. Like, have your meetings in
the morning. I never I can never work for an
NFL team. Too many damn meetings. What I love about
this job. No meetings. Uh, Terry, you're working through the
JJ McCarthy thing. You're gonna be okay, Say you're ready

(58:31):
for the Sam Darnold era.

Speaker 6 (58:32):
I'm not. I'm not okay in here. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (58:35):
Surgery torment Esk has done for the year.

Speaker 6 (58:38):
Yeah, and then Addison with ankle injury.

Speaker 3 (58:40):
Yeah, that's not good.

Speaker 4 (58:41):
So I watched a lot of JJ McCarthy and and
I certainly believe there's a place in the NFL for him.

Speaker 3 (58:50):
I'm certainly willing to acknowledge.

Speaker 4 (58:52):
I'm no.

Speaker 3 (58:54):
Scout, but I never watched that guy and thought franchise quarterback.
And this year he will not be able to prove
me wrong.

Speaker 4 (59:03):
Reds and Cardinals wind up their three game series to
night at gabp Emelio Pagan is gonna be the opener tonight.
The expectation is that Carson Spiers will pitch the bulk
of the innings. Bulk of the innings, I said. Kyle
Gibson throws for Saint Louis Red starting lineup. Let's hope
it's made well thanks to a made well restoration. Time
for a new roof. Made well restoration will inspect yours

(59:25):
at no cost. It's gonna Madewell Restoration dot Com. Line
up for the Red tonight. India is leading off Ellie's
head short, Tyler Stevenson behind the plate.

Speaker 3 (59:33):
TJ.

Speaker 4 (59:34):
Friedel is in centerfield, Spencer Steers at first, Candelario is
dhing Jake Freley and right field Will Benson and left.
Noel Dee Marte is playing third base and batting ninth.
Hunter Green pitched last night and was terrific, and he
was terrific in getting out of trouble in the fifth inning.

(59:55):
He has been terrific really since the end of June.
And look, I'm the guy who back in April and
early May he said, rather non controversially, it'd be awesome
if hunter Green can start pitching deeper into games. Some
took umbrage with that statement. I do not know why.
But since then, and really, since the end of June,
he has been awesome. Do I think he's gonna win

(01:00:19):
the cy Young No? Is he gonna get Is he
gonna get serious consideration? Absolutely? And he still has, you know,
eight or nine starts to bolster his candidacy. That's mostly irrelevant,
just for the benefit of providing context. Hunter Green this season,
over his last eight starts, has allowed six runs, and

(01:00:44):
three of them came in one start his won prior
to last night. It's been awesome and uber fun to
watch at times, overpowering at times winning with stuff that's
you know, not him blowing to pass people. He is
trusting all of his pitches. He has developed the full repertoire,
if you will. He's learned how to pitch and he's
only going to get better and it's so much fun.

(01:01:05):
And look, man, the Reds deserve whatever criticism you want
to lay against them. They deserve all the criticism I've
thrown at them.

Speaker 6 (01:01:16):
That's earned.

Speaker 4 (01:01:18):
That's based on track record. It's based on a season
that Reds have played pretty well recently. I think they've
what now won is it seven of ten? I've lost track,
but they're two hundred five hundred. They've played well recently,
but there's still the losses outweigh the wins. It's still
going to be really hard for this team to make
the postseason. The trade deadline strategy was weird, was it

(01:01:39):
didn't exactly inspire a lot of people. There's a lot
of skepticism and all that is earned. But whether it's
talking about their chances of really entering the race in
the final quarter of the season or being able to
legitimately contend next year, you have to feel good about

(01:02:04):
where their starting pitching is. This is probably I've said something.
I know I've said this before. I think I've said
it here. There are a lot of teams in baseball's
very large middle, handful of elite squads, handful of just
truly awful teams. And by the way, some of those
teams in the middle are gonna make the playoffs because
we've watered down the regular season and the postseason unlike

(01:02:26):
any point in baseball history. How many of those teams
would love to right now say that going into next
year and in their control for years to come. Are
Hunter Green, Nicolodolo, Carson Spyers, Andrew Abbott, Graham Ashcraft, Rat

(01:02:49):
Louder Now are all of those guys the same, No,
like graand Ashcraft this the season hasn't gone well injury
wise and performance wise, but still like there's a collection
of guys who are still young ish, some are moving
into their prime. One Hunter Green's already an All Star,

(01:03:11):
and Nicolodolo, I think gets there very soon. Like if
you went to all the if you went to like,
we'll do this and maybe we don't have to take
the middle twenty teams in baseball, and you said to
him going into next year, which means you have to
think about maybe guys who are gonna leave via free
agency or pitchers are gonna call up. That sort of thing.

(01:03:31):
Or guys you might get via free agency. Would you
like to have this collection of starting pitchers? I think
they'd all say yes. That might not make you feel
good about how they've played so far this year. It
doesn't make me feel good about how they've played so
far this year. Doesn't make me feel better about Okay, Well,
Nick Caral's gonna press all the right buttons, or ownership's
gonna do what's needed to get this team push it

(01:03:52):
over the top. But they are starting from a bona
fide place of strength. That's why this is in twenty fifteen, sixteen,
seventeen eighteen. It's not Sometimes I might feel like it,
but it's not. Those years were hopeless because could you
at any point identify three pitchers, much less maybe as
many as five or six or seven that you go.

(01:04:13):
You know what, those guys have a chance to be
a part of a really good starting rotation for quite
a while, and it starts with Hunter Green.

Speaker 3 (01:04:20):
Like bona fide staff ace. He can't take that for granted.

Speaker 4 (01:04:25):
If you know anything about this franchise's history, and we've
discussed this here too, the Cincinnati Reds have been awful,
awful at developing homegrown starting pitching for decades, I mean
going back to the seventies, right, kind ofm On one hand,
essentially homegrown started with the organization, got to the big

(01:04:45):
leagues and then had sixtained success. Johnny Cuato, Mario Soto,
Tom Browning. Now there were pitchers that started elsewhere, got here,
spend time in the miners, got to the B leagues
and were quite good. Luis Castile would be one. There
have been some okay free agent acquisitions or good trades,
good trades, Bronson Royal, Aaron Rang free agent acquisitions. Uh

(01:05:09):
you know, I mean Mike Leake didn't come through the system,
gave the Reds a couple of pretty good seasons, but
there haven't been many guys that pitched consistently year in
and year out, got to an All Star Game or
legitimately every single year where front of the rotation type guys.
The Reds have one of those, and he's still getting
better and he's already had an All Star year, and.

Speaker 3 (01:05:32):
Then behind him, like.

Speaker 4 (01:05:35):
If someone makes the statement to you, Nick Lodolo is
going to be an All Star next year, maybe you
don't agree, but you're not laughing at that that statement,
And are the rest of those guys as good. Like
to see a little bit little bit more from Andrew Abbott,
like to see a little bit more from Carson Spyers,
who we were not talking about two months ago. There

(01:05:55):
is a foundation Reds might have two guys that this
season finished in the top of both the MVP and
the cy Young voting in the National League in Ellie
and Hunter Green. It's something to be excited about. It's
something to build on. It also speaks to urgency, which
Barry Larkin mentioned on TV last night. If you missed it,

(01:06:18):
you'll hear it coming up at five oh five. A
couple of other things really quick. Florence home fornight for
Windy City. MLS transfer window is closing. Has FC Cincinnati
gotten a transfer. They bowed out of the League's Cup
last night, a four to two loss to Philly, which
means their game against Miami will not have to be
rescheduled and the Cincinnati Open continues. If you are at

(01:06:39):
the Tennis tournament tomorrow, come see us in the Western
Southern booth. Tony was there today doing his show. I'll
be there tomorrow during my show. Feel free to bring
food or gear from that pro shop I wear XL.
Tony Pike is joining me next. ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 2 (01:07:00):
The ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home of the Bengals.

Speaker 4 (01:07:03):
Yes, Bengals were out to Chicago practicing with the Bears tomorrow,
playing the Bears on Saturday. No training camp practice today,
but Tony Pikes here with a training camp report. Among
the news items we discussed yesterday, Jake Browning's absence from practice.

Speaker 3 (01:07:16):
He's got a rib issue. He's gonna keep him out
a while.

Speaker 4 (01:07:18):
Obviously it feels like week one is in jeopardy, which
obviously we hoped he wouldn't play, But now you have
to wonder, Okay, who's Joe Burrow's understudy.

Speaker 3 (01:07:28):
At least in the short term. Is it really gonna
be Logan Woodside.

Speaker 6 (01:07:33):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (01:07:33):
It was one of the oddities of practice that kind
of got swept under the rug yesterday because Zach comes
up after practice and you see Jake Browning out there
for practice, not practicing. Here's a Jamar Chase update, bj
Hill head a kid and oh, by the way, there's
rib injury that's gonna keep Jake Browning out for some time.

Speaker 3 (01:07:48):
Yeah, And that was it.

Speaker 8 (01:07:49):
Yeah, Like wait what, Yeah, Like we're just gonna slide
that in with the backup quarterback here. Look, I had
thought that Jake Browning looked like a guy on Saturday
last Saturday that knew he was the backup right, had
had some success last year, kind of maybe casting in
a little bit, and then I thought he struggled a
little bit on Monday. And now he's not practicing. So

(01:08:10):
maybe there was an issue that was pre existing there.
But it does it. It opens the door now for
Logan Woodside. I went back to our twenty eighteen camp
reports and I couldn't find much on Logan Woodside. I
don't remember him getting many reps. I do remember him.
He was a Scout safety for a while. Yeah, under
the defense into that twenty eighteen camps.

Speaker 3 (01:08:30):
Remarkable six years later, he's still in the NFL.

Speaker 8 (01:08:33):
When he was here, you would tell me, hey, he's
gonna come back in six years and I'm no way.
And to his credit, he hung around in Tennessee for
a while. He was with the Falcons last year, not
doing anything to Walia. He's not going to do anything
to Waialia. He now, six years in, he understands more
about defenses, probably understands the system that they have in

(01:08:55):
place a prototypical third team scout quarter that you're going
to carry on your roster. You don't really want to
make him an emergency backup. I would assume. I would
think that if the Browning news were to be worse
and linger into longer stretches, that they may have to
address that from another roster or from a free agent

(01:09:17):
spot going forward. Obviously, maybe who knows if that's in motion.
We don't know the severity of Jake Browning's injury, but
it almost it oddly takes us back to the last
couple of years of training camp, where we've had to
talk about backups and just on and on constant every day.
I feel like we were talking about the backup quarterback situation.
We haven't had to because of the greatness that Jake
Brownie show. It was the story of training camp last year.

Speaker 4 (01:09:40):
And by the way, in two of those preseason games
Jake Browning didn't play great. Then you know, played pretty
well in the final one, if I can recall, and
then when he had to play in the regular season,
played fine. And so we went into the offseason going, God,
what a great quarterback room, right if you have to
play Jake Browning, you're okay, and look hopefully he's fine.
But if in two and a half weeks we're still
doing this, then you have to won. Are okay week

(01:10:01):
went against New England or dare I say Week two
in Kansas City, something happens to Joe, what's the plan
and the other guy has to come in?

Speaker 3 (01:10:08):
How do we feel about the other guy being Logan
at what side?

Speaker 8 (01:10:11):
I don't think we'd feel great right now. You know,
we've spent an off season. There were people last year. Man,
you got to give Brownie a big deal. She came
a lot, you got and people to understand how his
free agency worked. The Bengals rewarded Jake Browning for what
he did last year, and he should have been rewarded
because he kept this team afloat and he gave them
life when it seemed like they were going to be lifeless.

Speaker 3 (01:10:31):
And again like, if you have to put him in
the game, yes, you got good, You're good. We're okay.

Speaker 8 (01:10:35):
I don't feel good if Logan Woodside is in the game.

Speaker 4 (01:10:38):
All right, I'm with you there, Tony Tony Pike back
with his five forty five tomorrow, Bengals off to Chicago
to practice with the Bears. Brendaman and Jones on Baseball
is next.

Speaker 9 (01:10:46):
Cincinnati's ESPN fifteen thirty Traffic from the UC Health Traffic Center.
Nearly sixty percent of Americans waiting on an organ transplant
are from multicultural communities. Give the Gift of life. Sign
up today to be an organ donor. Watch out for
an accident. If you're on Main Street at High Street
that's causing some delay there. And we have a twenty

(01:11:07):
five minute slow down on southbound seventy five between Glendale
Wilford Road and Paddack Road. And you should be aware
of an accident that's on both north and southbound Montgomery
Road near Cornell Road.

Speaker 3 (01:11:17):
Police are on scene causing delay. I'm Nicole with traffic.
The game on a Saturday is still weird. What's up?

Speaker 4 (01:11:24):
Muleagor ESPN fifteen thirty five o'clock Happy Hour, a service
of minelob Ultra. One of those sounds amazing right now.
Another check in with Tony Pike in about forty minutes.
Well play the Barry Larkin audio from last night. My
favorite all time red came off ass last night, like
well the Voice of You and I and Brown's fans

(01:11:46):
who are mad at the Bengals having orange pants, they
should be. They should be angry at something else, at
least I would be if I'm a Browns fan. That
coming up in just a bit. We spend a lot
of time today. Bengals are leaving for chicag I believe,
like right now, I have not seen anything suggesting that
Jamar Chase is with his teammates. I have not seen
anything suggesting that Jamar Chase is not with his teammates.

(01:12:10):
He was not there yesterday. Yesterday sort of pivoted the
entire Jamar Chase conversation to a toward a different direction.
And look, we have God knows, we have talked about
this almost NonStop for two and a half weeks. In
any negotiation where there's multiple parties at a bit of

(01:12:31):
a standstill, I said this two weeks ago, one party
has to be willing to do something drastic, and it
might mean something is as drastic as saying see you right,
Like if you're gonna go to your boss and say
I want to pay raise, and like it's one thing
to go in and ask and okay, but if you're
gonna be emphatic about it, and you're gonna.

Speaker 3 (01:12:51):
Dig in, and you've got to be willing to.

Speaker 4 (01:12:53):
Say sea if they don't give it to you, are
they gotta be willing to do something right? And so
one party here has to be willing to do something drastic.
Drastic for the Bengals would be Yet, we're just not
gonna pay you, and we're gonna let you go via
free agency or tell you what we're gonna trade you,
and neither thing is gonna happen. At least Mike Brown
has said publicly, neither thing is gonna happen. If you're

(01:13:13):
Jamar Chase, if you're not willing to miss games, then
you're just the guy in the breakroom complaining that you're
not getting a pay raise. We all know that person.
We all know the person that just NonStop complains about
their job circumstances, never do anything about it. And then
we know people who are like, screw this, I'm done.
If things don't change, I'm out. Jamar Chase can't go

(01:13:36):
play for another team. What he can do is say
I'm not gonna play against the Patriots. And what he
can do is say I'm not gonna play against the Chiefs.
In the absence of his willingness to do that. All
of this other stuff is needless, it's pointless.

Speaker 3 (01:13:52):
It's in the way.

Speaker 4 (01:13:54):
It puts Zach Taylor in a tough spot, puts his
teammates in a tough spot.

Speaker 3 (01:13:59):
So if the Bengals, you can end it, end it,
get the deal done. The theme of the offseason has
been urgency. This team can win the Super Bowl this year.
I know when I say that, folks, maybe not you,
but others roll their eyes. There's mo being a Homer.
This team can win the title this year. I wouldn't
make them favorites. They're not.

Speaker 4 (01:14:20):
I wouldn't wager an amount of money that mattered to
me on them if I had to pick one team.
But are they on the short list of teams that
can win it? Absolutely, at least has currently constructed. This
is a year you win the Super Bowl. Think of
all the different cool things that can happen. They are
gonna be coaches on this staff who get other jobs.

(01:14:40):
Zach Taylor's legacy cemented. Joe Burrow has that on his resume,
and now can can start building upon that. Players are
gonna get contracts, extensions. Players are gonna get contracts from
other teams based on that team success.

Speaker 3 (01:14:54):
A lot is riding on this, the future of the
stadium where the Bengals are gonna play like. There's so
much right on this season, and the good news is
the Bengals have the sort of quarterback and the type
of team that can deliver on what this season could
be about, on the promise of this season. So let
your coaches focus on that, Let your team focus on that.

(01:15:19):
Are the Bengals better if Jamar Chase is practicing? You
might argue, Look, of all the players on the team,
he's the guy who needs practice the least.

Speaker 4 (01:15:29):
But are they better? Is the implementation of the offense?
Is the ability to move pieces around? Is the ability
of Dan Pitcher to put his fingerprints on the offense?
Is Joe Burrow's preparedness for Week one? Are those things
amplified if Jamar Chase is practicing, of course the answers

(01:15:50):
are yes. So bring him back to practice, give him
his contract. This is not the typical Bengals need to
stop being and pay the guy.

Speaker 3 (01:16:01):
But that's not this. This is not the let's pull
the Bengals out of their own way. That's not this.

Speaker 4 (01:16:09):
This is I think this team can be special. I
want the people who make up the team, who who
work with the team hand in hand, like the coaching staff,
like the head coach. I want them to do their
jobs to the best of their ability without having to
deal with something in the way. Something in the way
as Jamar Chase's lack of availability for practice. It is

(01:16:32):
the uncertainty as to whether or not he's gonna play
Week one. If if there is no uncertainty regarding his
availability for week one, then why are we spending any
time on this. We're spending time on this because we acknowledge,
at least until he says so that you've got to
at least consider the possibility of him missing the first game.

Speaker 3 (01:16:50):
I want that possibility to go away. I think it'd
be cool self if Joe Burrow in the run up
to a season that is very crucial for this franchise,
and I think to a degree important for him, very
important for him. I din'd be cool as hell if
he could spend the next couple of weeks throwing footballs
to Jamar Chase. He is better if he's throwing footballs

(01:17:11):
to Jamar Chase. This offense, we've talked about it a
ton hit the ground running Week one. Hit the ground running,
so you can do what you haven't been able to
do the last few years. Do you know how bad
the Bengals have been the last three years? In Week two?

Speaker 4 (01:17:26):
Even the year where they got off to a three
and one start Week two when they went to the
Super Bowl against the Bears, atrocious two years ago, Week
two against the Cowboys atrocious last year, didn't score an
offensive touchdown in the first half. How about this? How
about hitting the ground running in Kansas City? And right now,
you and I know that, barring injury, Jamar Chase is

(01:17:47):
gonna be there. And not only is he going to
be there, he's gonna be working toward playing in that
game and playing against the team against which he has
played so well, let's eliminate this. Mike Brown said, the
deal's gonna get done. Get the deal done. I am
a believer in taking people and giving them the best
chance to do their jobs. The best way to do

(01:18:07):
your job is free of distraction, free of having to
give attention to something that has nothing to do with
your job, free of uncertainty. Give Zach Taylor a shot,
Give Joe Burrow a shot. You cannot convince me. Tony
Pike was there yesterday, and look, if you don't like,
If you don't like Tony Pike telling you that there
was frustration in practice yesterday, that's a you problem.

Speaker 3 (01:18:29):
He painted a picture of frustration. That frustration based on
maybe Joe just throwing the ball poorly yesterday could be
It's it frustration based on Jake Browning dealing with a
rib issue. I'm sure that has something to do with it.
Is it frustration based on Marius Mims in that situation,
which is so unfortunate because he had been so good
leading up to when we found out that he has
a peck issue? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (01:18:50):
Could the frustration have to do with God? This Jim
ar Chase thing just doesn't end. I'm going to guess
the answer is yes, get rid of it. Sign the man,
give him on track, give him his money, give him
his guaranteed money, and be willing to incur the cost
in the short term and incur the risk. You and
I both know you sign a guy guaranteed money and

(01:19:11):
something bad happens.

Speaker 6 (01:19:12):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (01:19:13):
Oh, there's a problem, right, and it comes at a
financial cost. This team is good enough, This team is
talented enough. This team's window is open enough that if
I'm Mike Brown, if I'm Katie Blackburn, if I'm Troy Blackburn,
and if I'm the people who work beneath them, I
want this franchise to incur that risk. Get Jamar Chase

(01:19:33):
on the practice field. What's the downside? I don't say
this from a point of criticism at face value. I
understand the Bengal stance here by the way their approach
with their own players has typically worked. They have a
great track record of signing their own high end guys,
a great track record. They signed Joe Burrow, didn't They

(01:19:56):
whole list of dudes who are with the team in
that two thousand and nine through two twenty fifteen window
who got second contracts, in some cases got third contracts now.
Some complimentary pieces got away, and some players who play
positions they don't value that much got away, like Jesse Bates.

Speaker 3 (01:20:11):
They value wide receivers. Their track record in this regard
is impeccable, and Mike Brown said they're gonna pay him.
Get it done now.

Speaker 4 (01:20:24):
Can you imagine how relieved Zach Taylor would feel if
he got a phone call tonight at his hotel room
in Chicago. Hey Cet deal's done. No what Jamar is
gonna practice with the Bears? How do you think Joe
Burrow would respond to that phone call? Joe your favorite
targets in the fold for the remainder of his prime years.

(01:20:47):
He's gonna be a practice tomorrow. He's gonna be a
practice when they come back from the game against the Bears.
You don't think there would be a weight lifted off
everybody's shoulders. You don't think that would be a tremendous
relief to everyone. You don't think that would allow Zach
Taylor the ability to do his job a little bit
easier and thus a little bit better. I think if

(01:21:09):
you're Mike Brown, you almost have a responsibility to Zach
Taylor and Joe Burrow and others to go ahead and
get this done, especially because you already said you would.
Five point three seven four nine fifteen thirty is our
phone number. Eight sixty six seven oh two three seven
seven six. Your phone calls are welcome. Tony Pike again
coming up in just under thirty minutes. Bengals did not

(01:21:32):
practice today because of the trip to Chicago. They are
practicing with the Bears tomorrow. Reds win last night looking
for a sweep of the Cardinals. What stood out was
Hunter Green. What stood out was also what my favorite
all time Red had to say about some of the
players the Reds have and where the Reds have spent

(01:21:54):
most of the season. I loved it. I'll play it
for you next on ESPN fifteen third who are mad
about the Bengals wearing orange pants are going to criticize
their team for doing something that I think is much
worse that Coming up in just about fifteen minutes and
another check in with Tony Pike Bengals training camp. The
team is off to Chicago working out with the Bears

(01:22:16):
tomorrow joint practice. We have been busy today. This has
made headlines and I liked it. Part of Bally Sports
Barry Larkin, the Hunter Green was terrific last night and
the Rods legitimately, and maybe this isn't likely, but legitimately
and I tend to think there's a pretty decent chance

(01:22:36):
this happens. Could end up with a position player who
finishes in the top five National League MVP voting by
the end of the season. There's still a quarter of
the season ago big chunk of the season remaining, but
Elidela Cruz still think you would have to consider his
MVP bona fides.

Speaker 3 (01:22:59):
He wouldn't get my oh sho hey Otani is still
among us.

Speaker 4 (01:23:05):
But well, could he finish in the top five of
an l MVP voting, It seems plausible. Could Hunter Green
finish in the top five of NLSI Young voting seems plausible.
It's pretty damn good. And so you've got these players
who are really promising. You've also got a team that
is inching closer to five hundred. Here's what my all

(01:23:25):
time favorite red set on TV last night.

Speaker 7 (01:23:30):
No, John, that is all fine and good, and you know,
and I think that's the right thing to say. But listen,
there's expectation and there should be expectation in this city
with this amount of talent that we have. We have
a superstar talented picture, We have superstar talented players, right,
and there's gotta be There's got to be there has

(01:23:51):
to be something in someone that just we just cannot
like accept mediacrate, if you will. Five hundred baseball is
five hundred baseball.

Speaker 3 (01:24:03):
You don't win.

Speaker 7 (01:24:04):
And playing five hundred baseball literally you have literally you
have dominant players and they have to figure out just
like that young man has right there how to dominate.
And I think these guys that, you know, they need
to be pushed, all right. I know that I'm sitting

(01:24:25):
here and just thinking about myself and Eric Davis and
what he did for me in my career. What he
did is he challenged me. He didn't let me just
go out there and just play and be okay. He
told me, it is unacceptable for you to be a
five hundred bawl player.

Speaker 3 (01:24:43):
It's unacceptable.

Speaker 4 (01:24:47):
Maybe I'm biased, and the Reds have some great broadcasters
on both the TV and radio side, and obviously some
do both. That is the best thing I've heard from
the Reds TV or radio crew in years now. Jeff Brantley,
Chris Welsh are awesome. Tommy Thrall is terrific, love John Sadak.

(01:25:12):
But what Barry just said, I think speaks to a
frustration that a lot of us as fans feel. By
the way, That's not coming from some random dude like me.
That ain't coming from some guy on Twitter. That's Barry Larkin.

(01:25:34):
That's one of the faces of this franchise. That's an icon.
It's also a guy who was here the last time
the Reds won pointing out that mediocrity and settling for
okay is not acceptable. It's refreshing to hear, refreshing. It's

(01:26:00):
a lot like you and me as Reds fans, right.
I also wonder where's the motivation behind that. That might
have been spur of the moment, might have been something
where Barry got to the ballpark last night, sat down
and said, I'm gonna I'm gonna find a spot where
I can make this point. Maybe it's a direct reflection

(01:26:23):
of how he feels about someone in the front office.
Maybe it's a direct reflection of just the overall vibe
of hey, they've got these young players and they're close
to five hundred and and hey, isn't that great. I
don't know, but that felt to me like something that
needed to be said. It felt to me like something

(01:26:43):
that he felt like he had to say for a reason.
But it was great to hear because it's true. I
think if I were to canvas a thousand Reds fans.
I don't love painting with a broad brush, but if
I were to, if I were to canvas one thousand

(01:27:05):
Reds fans and ask, do you feel like there is
an unrelenting desire by the people who run this franchise
to be the absolute best in the world at what
they do and make the Reds the premier franchise in

(01:27:26):
the entire sport. Most would say no, you might argue unfairly.
Most would say no, why because the vibe given off
for years has been one of not being unrelenting in
pursuing excellence and being the best team in the sport,
being one of the best franchises in all of sport.

(01:27:49):
To hear someone like Barry say that was insanely refreshing
and it should be played on loop between now and
the beginning of next year, because yes, boy, the Rads
have come a long way.

Speaker 3 (01:28:04):
They really have.

Speaker 4 (01:28:05):
Since the beginning of twenty twenty two, which was the
year where they lost one hundred games, They've come a
long way. Talent wise, they've come a long way. Farm
system wise, They've done a good job. The Hunter Green
contract was brilliant. He's one of the best bargains in
the entire sport. There are some players to build around.
There are also some guys on this team who are
okay okay, which means you can find better go find them.

(01:28:36):
It also means that when you have a situation like
last year at the trade deadline and hey, look, hey there.

Speaker 3 (01:28:42):
Were first place at the deadline, and well we're kind
of had a schedule. Nona go for it? Or this
off season, this past offseason, we got a team that
went eighty two and eighty last year. We're gonna go,
We're gonna go get some guys and h maybe they're okay.

Speaker 4 (01:28:58):
No, no, go get the best available players. That's not
Frankie mantas. It means building the requisite depth to be
able to handle injuries.

Speaker 3 (01:29:11):
This team didn't do that. It means not accepting being
middle of the pack. It means not striving for you know,
if we could somehow get to eighty five or eighty
six wins. How about this, how about try to build
a one hundred win team. How about try to build

(01:29:34):
a team that finishes the season with the most wins,
doesn't just eke into the playoffs. How about not settling
for players who are only okay, that have low ceilings.
How about not settling for bringing back a guy because

(01:29:54):
you know what, he was pretty good last year and
so he is going to go unchallenged heading into spring training,
even though he doesn't have that much of a track record,
like how about not settling for mediocrity? It that that
I heard that? It stopped me in my tracks, Like
I'm home last night watching the game.

Speaker 4 (01:30:14):
We're getting ready for the first day of school today,
we're doing stuff. I'm like, whoa way, man like Barry
Larkins has turned into a good a good analyst on
those games on TV. And you know, I think he
had a little bit of a rough beginning just because
it was a weird set of circumstances. New partner, he
wasn't doing every game, but not exactly known for saying

(01:30:36):
the most plinin things, not a hot take artist. And
for him to just drop that last night, like I'm
I like, visibly or audibly, I should say yeah, like yeah, yeah, Barry,
go Barry Larkin, go go go do it.

Speaker 3 (01:30:50):
Man. That felt like that felt like something that needed
to be said.

Speaker 6 (01:30:58):
Now.

Speaker 4 (01:30:59):
It would be better if it was said by someone
maybe in ownership, perhaps in the front office, maybe in
the manager's office, maybe a player on the team. But
it doesn't mean those words didn't ring true. Doesn't mean
those words weren't consequential. It doesn't mean they weren't worth
paying attention.

Speaker 3 (01:31:17):
To and again. They didn't come from some blow hard
on the radio. They didn't come from.

Speaker 4 (01:31:20):
Some some dudes spouting off on Facebook. Came from Barry Larkin,
a guy who knows a thing or two about excellence.
Guy's got a plaque in Cooperstown that should be played
on on on loop for the rest of the season,
all throughout the off season.

Speaker 3 (01:31:39):
The idea should be to be.

Speaker 4 (01:31:42):
Undeterred in the unrelenting pursuit of greatness being the best,
not shrug our shoulders. Hey, we won eighty two last year,
Maybe we goin eighty five?

Speaker 3 (01:31:54):
Oh again, in is the sixth? Like and not?

Speaker 4 (01:32:00):
You know, well, you know this guy was on the
team last year and he was okay, Like, that's cool.

Speaker 3 (01:32:04):
Is there anybody better? Can we get somebody better?

Speaker 4 (01:32:07):
There are a lot of guys, a lot of players
on this year's team who have done some okay things
and have been on the team for the last couple
of years, who have done some okay things. How many
of them are irreplaceable? How many of them should absolutely
have an ironclad grip on a starting job or a
roster spot next year?

Speaker 3 (01:32:26):
Not that many?

Speaker 4 (01:32:28):
In many cases, In many cases, you should be looking
for players who are better. They didn't do that this offseason,
and you might argue understandably so, because they had a
lot of guys that they thought are worth giving a
chance to. Man, at some point, your franchise has to
be about screw it. We're going for it, and we're
not gonna hope to sneak up on people where We're

(01:32:50):
not gonna hope to sort of linger around here. We're
gonna even be there around five hundred, like goode. We're
going and we're gonna try to be the best in
the world at what we do. The good news is
they have some players worth doing that with. And I
think that was the point. We have some players worth
doing that with. We have players that are too good

(01:33:12):
for five hundred to be the goal. I think what
Barry was doing there was in response to John on
the broadcast talking about, well, win this game. They're two hundred,
five hundred, and they can get to five hundred, like great,
awesome relative to where they've been, But really, how much
longer are we gonna be in August talking about five hundred?
And it does feel like we keep using that as
a baseline level of success. Finish two over five hundred

(01:33:33):
last year finish two out of the playoffs too.

Speaker 3 (01:33:39):
You know what, if they can get back to five
hundred here in the middle of August, how about.

Speaker 4 (01:33:44):
One year going to August and you're fifteen over five hundred.
I loved hearing that last night. I don't know if
it's gonna have any major impact. I do not know.
I appreciated the hell out of it because it was refreshing,
it was overdue, it was something we do not hear
from anybody else, and it came from the perfect person.
Say what you want about Barry Larkin as his detractors,

(01:34:07):
I don't understand what there is to detract guys, A
Hall of Famer, guys, an MVP, the dude played his
ass off for eighteen years. Good representative of the city.
But whatever, regardless of how you feel about him, how
if you care at all about this franchise? How if
you want to see this team actually pursue something beyond mediocrity?
Could you not hear that, whether it's live on TV

(01:34:29):
or as I just played it and not go.

Speaker 3 (01:34:31):
Yes, Berry, thank you, thank you, Barry, thank you, Thank you.

(01:35:27):
so I don't love the perspective of I see the
Browns like, no, this isn't cool, this isn't funny. If
you read some of the details of what is alleged,
it's pretty horrific what he did to what he's alleged
to have done to his girlfriend, who is apparently also
the mother of his eleventh month old child. It's horrific.
It's you don't make fun of it, and we're not

(01:35:48):
going to. But if I'm a Browns fan, I'm less
concerned about the color pants another team is wearing, and
I'm more interested in what it looks like when twenty
four hours after a domestic violence arrest, my team is
letting this dude practice because it comes off as them
not caring.

Speaker 3 (01:36:09):

Barry Larkin is still my captain, my friend, still aware
in the sea, and you know what, he is the
perfect person to say this, and hopefully that's gonna get
more of our legends to speak up because like me
as Stans, we've been saying this for a while, but
I mean the Castle leenas have to hear that and

(01:37:33):
Gom like now all of a sudden, you just have
to hear Johnny Bench going, Yeah, mediocrity isn't what we
do here. Like the guys who have won here need
to owe the rest of the organization to account and
go listen, that's not the standard. Winning is the standard here.
Barry Larkin, you're my captain, so I.

Speaker 3 (01:37:52):
Got my Phil.

Speaker 4 (01:37:53):
You and I are on the same page. Yeah, I mean,
here's a guy that knows what it takes to win
and knows what it can be here, what it can
be like here when they do win. Here's a guy
who knows excellence. Here's a guy who knows and look,
he was on a lot of early mediocre teams. Let's
not kid ourselves kind of post nineteen ninety five, that's
all the Reds were.

Speaker 3 (01:38:11):
But yeah, man, that's that's a that's a voice with
some heft. That's a that's a voice with some cachet.
That's a voice worth paying attention to. So is Mike's
Mike's Mike's Mike, there's plural Mike. You're on ESPN fifteen thirty.

Speaker 5 (01:38:30):
Thanks. So I want to check from now on. I'm
following your path. You know, you say you want to
check for mentioning your stuff when you're on the radio
and you give all these people free plugs. I want
to check from my heart from now on, anytime the
home dog strategy is mentioned.

Speaker 4 (01:38:45):
I think that's fair you introduced. No, I haven't said
a check. I want to check anytime something's mentioned. But
like there are corporate corporate sponsors of stadium names that
I'm I'm not compelled to say unless one of those
companies wants to pay me. And I think that's totally fair.
But I also think it's totally fair given the fact
that you introduced the home dog strategy to me, to

(01:39:06):
this radio station, and then by extension our audience. I
think every time the home dog strategy is mentioned, you
should get residuals.

Speaker 5 (01:39:15):
Of course, I'm kidding. You know I'm kidding. Okay, let's okay, boy,
when you get that bit in your mouth like on
the Chase thing, boy, you play it reminded me of
Jesse Bates a few years ago. But I can empathize
with you. But I'll tell you, if Burrow is as
good as we think Burrow is and has shown and
could be better, it'd be like Tom Brady, he could

(01:39:38):
win without Jamar Chase, and and like Brady he finally
got Randy Moss and still couldn't win the Super Bowl
with Moss on a fluke catch.

Speaker 4 (01:39:49):
That still the greatest team I've ever seen. But I mean, look,
are they better with Jamar Chase or without with him? Okay,
he's under contract to play for the Bengals right now,
right so while he's under contract, why would you do
anything that would would keep the two apart from each
other when they're so good together.

Speaker 5 (01:40:11):
I don't get it either, Why on both parties actually
asking to a degree and just getting it done. I
mean it's so childish.

Speaker 4 (01:40:19):
Yeah, I mean I don't even know, Mike, and thank
you as always, I do have to run. I hope
you're feeling okay, and we'll talk to you tomorrow. I
don't even know that it's childish. It's just let's just
take a deep breath here. Understand, there's still some time
between now and the start of the season. Here's Jamar's take,
Here's the Bengals take. Here's what we all want. We
want the Bengals to win. I'm sure Jamar wants to win. Sure,

(01:40:42):
the Bengals want to win. Okay, do we have a
shot this year?

Speaker 6 (01:40:45):
Yes?

Speaker 4 (01:40:46):
What best gives us a shot? Is it clearing BS
out of the way?

Speaker 6 (01:40:53):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (01:40:55):
Yes, This as it relates to the goal of winning
this year is b Yes. It doesn't mean that Jamar
Chase is wrong. I don't think he is. It doesn't
mean that the Bengals stance to this point is wrong.

Speaker 3 (01:41:05):
It's not.

Speaker 4 (01:41:07):
But it's just BS as it relates it it's a
nothing burger as it relates to winning this year. So
remove it. Remove the nothing burger and allow the focus
to solely be on things that matter, whether they're good
or bad. The best way you do that is to
get the deal done. Tony Pike joins us next Neat

(01:41:29):
Inspiration Shop Kroger.

Speaker 2 (01:41:30):
From Hard It's just a training camp, report Brook to
you bar, Skyline Chili feeling good. It's Skyline time on
ESPN fifteen thirty, the official home of the Bengals.

Speaker 3 (01:41:44):
So the Bengals are.

Speaker 4 (01:41:44):
Traveling to Chicago today, which means they're not practicing, which
means Tony Pike is not in practice, which means he
can't be negative. He can't give us observations about which
players are maybe having a bad day, which players are
maybe struggling a little bit to get through camp. So instead,
you're here with me in studio and we can perhaps
talk about some things from a from a positive perspective.

Speaker 8 (01:42:04):
Tony, Yeah, really positivity, because what's I guess now understood
by me is that a player having a bad day
or bad couple days means that I think the player's
terrible or is headed bad camp in general. So we
are let's let's try at least for this to be
positive today.

Speaker 4 (01:42:19):
Well, I don't want you going down to training camp practice,
and I don't want you observing and then reporting. I
want you there and making things up just to make
me feel good.

Speaker 8 (01:42:29):
Okay, my job now, because we go from training reports
to what season previews?

Speaker 3 (01:42:33):
Season previews?

Speaker 8 (01:42:34):
Yeah, I just want to make sure, whether it's what
I see or not, that I'm doing the good job
of making sure that you're confident in what the Bengals
are doing.

Speaker 4 (01:42:40):
Well, I tell you what I am confident in. I'm
confident in some things I saw and you and I
haven't had a ton of time to talk about the
preseason game last Saturday, and obviously the focus is shifting
to what's happening on not just the practice field in
Chicago tomorrow, but obviously the game against the Bears on Saturday.
But let's let's kind of work our way through some
things that happen I think on defense on Saturday that

(01:43:01):
we're very encouraging, and maybe get your thoughts on how
those things might translate to the season.

Speaker 3 (01:43:05):
Let's begin with Dax Hill.

Speaker 4 (01:43:07):
Yeah, right, Dax Zell, it kind of felt like he
was a little bit behind DJ Turner. I think he
made a pretty big statement on Saturday night.

Speaker 8 (01:43:13):
Yeah, for much of camp it felt like DJ Turner
was winning the battle because of what Dax Hill was doing.
Seemingly every offensive highlight you saw from a practice standpoint,
it was against Dax Hill. And then you forget he
is changing a position from safety to corner, which I
think corner defensively is the hardest position in the NFL. Obviously,
I think quarterback is the toughest, but I think corner

(01:43:36):
is one of the hardest positions to play. You have
to drop into coverage, you've got to go man, you
don't know what the receiver's gonna do. You're responsible for
so many things. And Dax Hill showed Saturday that he
is improving. And I think if you're lu Ana Rumo,
when you decided to make the move, you knew there
was gonna be some growing pains early. If he continues
to improve, he's gonna make this a legitimate conversation on

(01:43:58):
who's gonna be corner number two when you break from
training camp. And let's also not look past the fact
that there are just guys out there that are gamers
that when the lights come on on the biggest stages,
they play their best. Maybe they don't bring it every
day at practice, and that's something he's got to improve.
I thought he looked the part in one opportunity in
a preseason game against Tampa.

Speaker 3 (01:44:19):
Let's stay in the secondary.

Speaker 4 (01:44:20):
It was not a perfect night for Josh Newton, but
I thought it encouraging one.

Speaker 8 (01:44:23):
I think Josh Newton, outside of Amarius Mims, who's now injured,
is the most impressive rookie that the Bengals have. I
thought Chris Jenkins had some growing pains on the defensive
line against Tampa. I don't think he looked all that great.
Jermaine Burton. I think the Bengals showed you where he's
at right now when they used him, and Joe Burrow
after the game said so very impressive. A lot of

(01:44:46):
talent needs to get into his playbook. Eric All I
think is going to be a guy that has upside.
McKinley Jackson hasn't practiced much. Josh Newton man, he talks,
he backs it up. He carries himself with a certain
swagger that you have to at that position because you
are gonna get beat more times than not. You have
to have that ability to bounce back, and he is
now put together, which I think is big for a rookie.

(01:45:08):
Consistent good practices, yep, learning more of the playbooks being
thrown at you. You're going to a game. Setting practices
are changing. He's answered the bell seemingly every time. I've
been very impressed with Josh Newton.

Speaker 3 (01:45:20):
All right, Tony, awesome stuff. Thank you as always.

Speaker 4 (01:45:22):
We will chat again tomorrow at three forty five, four
forty five, and five forty five. Bengals will be practicing
