Speaker 1 (00:00):
Rocky, I feel like nearly every single day during training
camp and often during the offseason, we heard about how
the Bengals are trying to adapt a dual identity where
they still want to have Joe Burrow in the shotgun,
still want to let him sit back there and diagnose,
but they want him under center a lot more often.
And we saw him operate under center often in the
preseason and we did during training camp. So let's talk
(00:22):
about this mechanically. Why emphasize this? Why change?
Speaker 2 (00:29):
And what does an offense playing under center do to
a defense?
Speaker 3 (00:33):
First of all, the only time there is true play
action where a linebacker or a second-level defender plays is
coaxed or and makes a movement to stop the run
is when it's under center i mean a zone read
fake does very very little maybe you get a step
out of them but if as a linebacker you're looking
across the line and that quarterback is right there he
comes out and he shows that ball and that running
(00:55):
back is coming downhill you are going to come up
or else you're going to get blasted right so then
off of that here comes the play action and things
like that um so i think that's why The Bengals
have tried to work on it. Now, early in the preseason,
it didn't look so good, but I think we saw
some times it could work, and I hope they stay
with it because it is a tool. It's not something
(01:16):
I think they should do 30 times a game, but
if it's eight times a game, I think it can
give them a little bit of an advantage, show a
little bit of a wrinkle, nothing that's too drastically different,
but then still be able to let Joe Burrow get
back there in shotgun, see the defense so he can
see the coverage and diagnose.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
It just makes sense to me also. You should be
able to run the ball more efficiently.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
Yeah, because everything is downhill. With a zone read, it's
a little bit more of a lateral kind of.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Feel to it. You get the ball, then you run.
Whereas if you're under center, you're running as.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
You get the ball.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
As you're getting the ball.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Your momentum's coming downhill. So if they can pull it off,
if they can do it, I think, again, it'll bode
well for them. Don't have to do it a ton,
but just a little bit just throws that defensive wrinkle.
