Oh, Terrence, Terrence working on it. This is actually an
issue that Paul and I had on recording his podcast
last week, and so I feel like this is this
is payback. I could see him. He looks great, He's
got a collared shirt on. He's ready to go. He's
in the interview room. There's nobody else in there. He's psyched.
I'm psyched. We're gonna talk with Paul. Bengals had a
practice this morning. The weather, I think the right word

is apocalyptic. I mean it was. I don't know that
I've seen skies as dark as we saw this morning.
When we tried to do the Tony and Moe Training
Camp show from practice, and that lasted about five minutes,
the Bengals moved practice up in order to get some
work in outdoors. They still had to go inside of
the practice bubble finished up there, Paul was in there,

(02:08):
we were not. That's okay, And now they have a
preseason game on Thursday. Can we can we do take
two with Paul? Is he there? You know what we
could do is I could ask Paul questions and he
could write them down on a piece of paper and
I could read them for our our radio audience. Do
we have to do we have to call him? Do
we have to use old technology?

Very good?

This is this is see this is why I love
live spontaneous radio. Okay, this is live. We don't tape this.
We didn't tape this this morning and run it in there.
And this is a live radio show. So you get
all the glitches and bugs and mistakes and technical difficulties
that that we we experience. You get to enjoy them
in real time. It's going great. It's going great. So

what we'll do is, I guess we'll get Paul on
the air the same way that radio shows have been
getting people on the air for close to one hundred
year years. Uh, let me just set up the show
while we get a hold of Paul. We have a
lot to get to a lot of Bengal stuff, all right,

I don't hear this is this is wonderful. I was
told we do it. I think we comp I think
we got this going. It's great, it's good. I was
told when we did this segment last week that I
need to do a better job of looking at the
camera so it looks like I'm looking at you. So

I'm I'm ready for it. I'm going to do my best.
But uh, you're you're like on a great delay. This
is just really going.

Speaker 5 (03:43):
Well, you're on a delay, so I don't know, like
if there's a long pause, no that I'm not thinking
about it.

Speaker 4 (03:49):
Yeah, I'm just waiting for everything to catch up.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
You know, we recently sent a bunch of astronauts to
like the Dark side of the Moon, and so we
couldn't talk to the mission control, couldn't talk to the
astronauts for like twenty five minutes or something, and then
when they circled around the moon and got back, they
could communicate with them and the delay was less than
the delay will be. As I talked to you from
what you're about seven miles from where I am right now.

So this is good, This is exciting.

Speaker 5 (04:16):
Yeah, I feel like it wouldn't be terrible for me
to actually just send my answers via carrier pigeon up
to you or.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
Something like that.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
We could probably maybe make it effective.

Speaker 5 (04:24):
You know what, if they could come here anytime you
want to just pick up the phone.

Speaker 4 (04:28):
Yeah, I've got it handy in my hand.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
If we could get the carrier pigeon sponsored, that might
be how we do things. Yeah, I like that. Uh,
there's a lot to get too. Based on your coverage
of Sunday's practice, I now wish we had been broadcasting
from Sunday's practice.

Speaker 4 (04:48):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (04:49):
That was the best practice I think, certainly of this
year and the most telling me.

Speaker 4 (04:56):
It was six drives for the ones versus the ones.

Speaker 5 (05:01):
True like just go drive the field, calling it as
you go, and we we were sort of.

Speaker 4 (05:08):
Talking to Zach Taylor about that in the run up
to it.

Speaker 5 (05:11):
He specifically mentioned Sunday, and look, this is when things change.

Speaker 4 (05:17):
Things will change when.

Speaker 5 (05:19):
You see guys having to figure it out on the fly.
Not just okay, you know the script, you know the
play that's coming. It's once you got guys out there
just having to memorize where that you.

Speaker 4 (05:30):
Learn a lot more. And I think we learned a
lot more.

Speaker 5 (05:32):
And what we learned is that this has a veteran
team that is pretty darn well rounded. Like we saw
that come to Fruition. The offense made plays to score
a couple of touchdowns. You saw the defense make plays
in order to get stops. It wasn't mess ups that
were causing. It was both sides making plays. Very high

(05:55):
level competition for what you know practice nine out there you.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Wrote about four winners who have stood out for one
reason or another. Here's one of my favorite things that
unfolds during training camp is there is a guy who's
not a rookie, has been on the team for a while,
but that we spend the entire offseason not talking about
you joined me every Tuesday, with a handful of exceptions,
from the end of last season until right before training

(06:21):
camp started. The name DJ Ivy never came up, but
it should have perhaps because now I think we were
learning a little bit more and this is a good
thing about their cornerback depth.

Speaker 4 (06:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (06:33):
I mean we have talked a lot about the cornerback
groom though, and it was who's it going to be?
And I think what they internally found was there was
a lot of trust around dj Ivy for the way
that he handled the role that he had last year.
And quite honestly, they didn't have a whole lot of
other options to turned to anyway.

Speaker 4 (06:51):
But I do think that he's earned it.

Speaker 5 (06:54):
And then you've seen him come out here in this
camp and been good, inconsistent, been sticky, made plays.

Speaker 4 (07:03):
He's not showing up getting beat all the time.

Speaker 5 (07:06):
And you know, I remember you go back to dj
Ivy's first his rookie camp, seventh round pick.

Speaker 4 (07:12):
He had an incredible camp. It was like, who's this guy?

Speaker 5 (07:15):
He got to find a role for him, and then
his role ended up being largely on special teams. Darren
Simmons really liked him till then he got hurt. And
then last year they put him in the role of
covering these tight ends. He excelled. They didn't have a
tight end catch a pass on him for a first down.
Like everything they've given him, and it's been small and incremental.

Speaker 4 (07:35):
He's done well.

Speaker 5 (07:36):
And I think they all looked at each other said,
why shouldn't he get the bigger opportunity right now?

Speaker 4 (07:41):
He's gotten it. I think he seized it.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
What has Josh Newton done, or I guess more specifically,
not done to dig himself so deep into the team's doghouse.

Speaker 5 (07:54):
I mean, flip on the tape like he's just the
tape from last year. There's no physical there's no awareness,
there's no sense of making the plays.

Speaker 4 (08:04):
You look at some of the worst plays.

Speaker 5 (08:07):
On last year's tape and he is around them, you know,
like and you got to be able to cover better.
Like it just has not come together. He sounds like
he's doing He sounds he says the right things right
like you feel like he's got the right mentality for it.
But when the lights have really come on, it just

hasn't connected.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
The preseason game on Thursday, give me one player on
each side of the ball that you are looking forward
to seeing what they show against Detroit. Oh No, we
have good question, because.

Speaker 5 (08:47):
I'm getting I'm getting an alert right now on my
I'm getting.

Speaker 1 (08:52):
A crisis alert on my phone that is totally shut
down my screen. I'm trying to figure out what's going
Oh no about Okay, Well, we're all right now. This
is serious news. National Weather Service tornado warning in this
area until three forty five. Take shelter now in a
basement or an interior room in the lowest floor of

a sturdy building. So this is like real life tornado
warning in this area. Boy, it's a good day to
be on the sixth floor for building now in it.
So I think you're like hunkered down the show goes.
I know, I was like, I can't be in.

A better place.

I am in the bows of pay Corpse Stadium right now,
So I'm feeling safe. But it did throw off me
being able to hear anything you just said. Well, I
was getting that a lot.

I'm just glad that the emergency alert system is working.
Son on each side of the ball. Specific to Thursday,
give me one guy offense and defense who you're looking
forward to watching against Detroit.

Speaker 4 (09:53):
I mean, I'll start. I'm gonna tell you gotta keep
it Rookie.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (09:58):
I just think they're the most interesting place players on
this team, and uh, I think on defense, it's hard
not to say Cash is how but I'll I'll pass
on that with an acknowledgment of like, obviously he's gonna
be fun to watch ta Carrio Davis has had a
really interesting camp and that it's been low key, Like

(10:19):
I don't, I don't, we haven't.

Speaker 4 (10:21):
Really you don't see him getting beat all the time.

Speaker 5 (10:24):
You've seen You've seen him get his hands on the
ball a couple of times.

Speaker 4 (10:28):
But I want to see how he holds up physically.
I want to see how he holds up making plays.

Speaker 5 (10:34):
I want to and I want to see his consistency out.

Speaker 4 (10:37):
There in this game. I would start with that.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
Side, okay, and by the way, to Carrio Davis, cash
as hell. Like I do feel like with some some
themes that emerge have emerged during camp and then based
on some of the things that Zach Taylor has had
to say, we were lucky enough to have Duke Tobin
on the show with us on Friday. I feel like
the seeds are being planted for a rookie class that
is a pretty good chance of contribute.

Speaker 5 (11:01):
Yeah, contributing when they earn it and not being given it,
Like last year's was and I think that's the biggest difference,
is that when you have a group that has to
go get it and they have to go buy.

Speaker 4 (11:14):
People, they can be ready in the wings.

Speaker 5 (11:16):
It's a lot different, I think for those players mentally
than it is.

Speaker 4 (11:21):
You're thrown in the fire and you're the guy immediately,
and that.

Speaker 5 (11:24):
Obviously was a big I mean, have fifty three starts
by rookies last year, and that's just there's not a
single projected starter in this year's rookie class in terms
of truly starting, and that's such a difference into where
they're at rosterise.

Speaker 4 (11:37):
And I think it's different on the pressure.

Speaker 5 (11:40):
That a lot of these rookies I think feel right now,
not that they're not trying to make impression, trying to
make a play, but it's just a lot different, I
think when you know how urgent that is.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
Joe Burrow and the guys who matter most on offense
are going to be on the field and they'll have
helmets on and pads and I guess they're technically going
to play, but are they actually going to really do anything?
Are they just gonna kind of wave to fans like
they did on Friday night. I think they're gonna play.

Speaker 5 (12:05):
I mean, I would anticipate if they're going out there,
it's gonna look like it did last year in Philadelphia.
You had two drives, two touchdown drives, fifteen plays, drop backs,
throwing the ball, I mean down the field. I would
think we'll see a decent amount of their under center
stuff just to get that live reps. And those are

(12:26):
also a little safer on on Burrow. But you know,
I don't I don't put it past them. I mean,
after what happened last year in Washington, I don't know
that I have anything I can say for certain it's
gonna go look safe for anything like that. I think
when when Burrow and his guys get out there, they're
gonna they're gonna play it like it's real.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
I'm kind of back to not wanting those guys to
play in the preseason after I championed it last year.
I'm kind of back to wanting those guys to just
wear baseball caps and you know, jerseys without pads.

Speaker 5 (12:57):
So I don't know, the curious, The curious next step
is going to be okay, if they have a they're
gonna have a joint practice next Thursday.

Speaker 4 (13:05):
Will that count or or will.

Speaker 5 (13:08):
They play in preseason game two or is this the
only game action? Because the Joint Practice is gonna act
for more of what they really need in terms of
the game, and is.

Speaker 4 (13:19):
That the best? So that's kind of the next step.

Speaker 5 (13:21):
I can see them obviously playing in this one, but
I think it'd be interesting to see if they kind
of use the Joint Practice as the last box to
check to have them ready for the season.

Speaker 1 (13:29):
Yeah, all right, well this was a great segment and

Technically sound we are, we are, we are operation. You're
supposed to be doing well operationally with Zach Taylor was
saying behind us earlier.

I don't know if we did as well operationally.

Well, I'm getting texts that say take covered now in
all cabs, and I'm not trying to trivialize this at all,
but like there's some pretty serious stuff happening outside, so

threat alert in this area. I don't honestly know if

in this area as I look at my phone, means
Hamilton County, or I for it means where we are
in Kenwood. But in this area it's I have like
a little sliver of a window that I can look
at right now. It looks very very dark, very very gray.
I could not blame you at all if you decided, Hey, MO,
we're gonna check in with somebody who can give us

some more accurate weather information. But I will tell you
just what. And I'm we all have cell phones, so
I'm sure you're getting the same thing that I am here.
And maybe our newsroom can give us more details. But
there is a rough weather in the area. And as
much as we're gonna have fun talking about sports today,
obviously everybody's health and safety is far more important. We
will keep you up to date as far as that

But first and foremost, a radio station's primary focus is
to serve the public, and so I need to let

you know this. The National Weather Service has issued a
tornado warning, which is different than a watch. It's a
tornado warning for Dearborn County, Indiana, Hamilton County, Ohio, Franklin
and Ripley Counties in Indiana, and Boom County in Kentucky.
And that is effective until three thirty six, so another
eight minutes or so. We got the alert right when

we went on the air here in Kenwood. It is
I thought this morning downtown for the Bengals practice was dark.
It is needless to say ominous. And so I know
the local television stations they all have their meteorologists and
are going through the necessary, the necessary warnings that they

(16:05):
have to administer about you know, finding safe places and
all that. I'm not a weather person. I'm barely equipped
to do the job that I do do. But I
know what it looks rough outside, and it looks rough
outside where I am right now, and I know what
the weather folks are saying. So severe weather is upon

(16:26):
us tornado warnings throughout the Try State, and as much
as I'm not a meteorologist, I do know that there
is a significant difference between a tornado watch and a
tornado warning. A tornado warning would suggest that folks in
the area that the warning is for are dealing with
an imminent threat. The tornado warning in Dearborn County has

(16:48):
been extended until four o'clock, Ohio County and Indiana until
four o'clock. So a few extensions of various warnings throughout
the Tri date. If you're in our general listening area,
and I'm obviously not referring to folks who are listening
to us in other parts of the country, the iHeartRadio
app chances are it would make sense. I'm watching on

Channel five right now, and I'm watching some stop lights
and street signs sway in the wind, and there's rain,
significant rain in certain parts of the western parts of Cincinnati,
and lots of lightning strikes, but most significantly right now.
And I'm not trying to make this out to sound
more serious than it is. My job is to not

scare people, but it is to provide a public service.
Even though this is a silly sports talk radio show.
There is severe weather all around us, and you could
do whatever you want with those warnings, but there are
tornado warnings for a whole bunch of counties in the
Tri state area. So most importantly, we hope you're with
us all afternoon, but you gotta stay safe, and so

During the break, I walked down into the office. And
for those of you who have never either been in
our building or driven past our building, which you could
see right off I seventy one, it's a big glass building, right,
and so we're surrounded by windows. Those windows are vibrating
in ways that I've We've worked in this building for
twenty two years. Those windows are vibrating in ways that

I've never seen before. Our show in the wintertime goes
it always goes till six o'clock. But in the wintertime,
you know, once you kind of get past daylight savings
in November and December and for much of January, we're
on after the sun goes down, and so oftentimes that
time a year, and I'll joke about it. Sometimes I'll
look out the window and it's pitch black, because in

early December at five o'clock in the afternoon, it's pitch black.
That's what it looks like where we are in Kenwood
right now. By the way, Like suddenly everybody's at work today,
Like there's like people, you know, all all commerce has
stop because folks are staring outside. So about two minutes ago,
and I don't do this to I don't do this

to engage in hyperbole. I saw the biggest lightning bolt
I've ever seen that looked like it like was. It
came down right across the street. And so we're in Kenwood,
northeastern side of Cincinnati. If you're in this area, you
probably shouldn't be where we are right now, which is

on the sixth floor of a building. National Weather Service
has extended the tornado warning for Hamilton County until four
to oh one, Kenton County four oh one, Claremont County
four oh one, boone County in northern Kentucky, and Campbell
County as well until four to oh one. And so

I get it, man, this is not a weather show,
this is not a news show. But we would be
abandoning our civic duty as license holders of a broadcast
license if we did not mention those things. But it is.
It is gnarly out. I just talked to a coworker
of mine who live deep in the west side, like

almost Indiana, and he informed me that his parents had
a tree fall down in their house. And so obviously
this is all throughout the greater Cincinnati area tornado warnings,
lots of wind, lots of lightning, lots of thunder and
obviously in many instances rain. All right, we'll keep you

Zach Taylor today said that Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase, and
t Higgins are expected to play. Same for Dexter Lawrence
Dax Hill will not go, Brian Cook will not go.
Also against that there's no timeline right now for the
return of bj Hill or Shamar Stewart, but he says
both are progressing quote as we hoped they would. Don't
forget Thursday Night's game live on ESPN fifteen thirty at

seven o'clock. Pregame coverage at five thirty. We're going to
do our show from the booth on Thursday, starting at
three five. Meanwhile, after an off day yesterday, Red's run
the South side of Chicago, first of three against the
White Sox. Nick Lodolo, back from the injur list, will
make the start for Cincinnati against Rady Sean Burke seven
forty tonight's first pitch on seven hundred WLW. After getting

swept in Washington by the Nationals and an off day yesterday,
the Reds enter play tonight, six and a half games
out of first place. Florence will host Lake Erie tonight.
FC Cincinnati looks to advance to the knockout stage of
the League's Cup competition with a home game tonight against Atlas.
That game is at eight o'clock on ESPN fifteen thirty.

I guess I have to say weather permitting, seventeen from

I assume you're inside right now, Tony.

Indoors y, I'm not going to make it outside for
this one. My meteorology has been improving throughout training camp.
Don't need to be a meteorologist today.

Speaker 1 (23:46):
No you yeah, no, yeah. You don't need a degree
in weather science to be able to conclude that the
weather right now is rough. Hopefully everybody is staying safe.
Let's let's start with something that you and I talked
about with Duke to Been on Friday when we were
at pay Corpse Stadium, and that's the rookie class. Because
I feel like the seeds are being planted for this

year's rookie class to be able to contribute, yeah, you.

Speaker 8 (24:12):
Know, ranting guys and giving them a red. These kas
are expected to come in and perform and be an
impactful part of this team. And Zach Taylor alluded to
that as well. He was asked about the rookies today
and he said they're all on pace, which is key
because we've talked about the grind, the mental of the

physical grind. When you get to this portion of training camp,
know where the preseason is right around the corner. It
feels like they've got multiple guys now that they drafted
that can be relied upon for this season. That's what
Zach said, It's what dukes want us and coach speak
right now, and they performed well so far.

Speaker 1 (24:56):
H one. More So, Thirson Night is going to be
big for a lot people, and we're all going to
be watching a lot of different things. But first and
foremost at the top of my list that I would
imagine for a lot of fans is get a chance
to see what sort of offensive offensive line depth they
may have.

Speaker 8 (25:12):
Yeah, that to me is one of the bigger questions remaining.
I know what they have as the starting five, I'm
not confident yet in the depths and until the bullets
are flying on Thursday Night and the rest of the preseason,
I don't think we're going to have that answer either.

So that to mean we know what the five are.
But we've talked about this, and it's an unfortunate part
about sports. Water normally finds its level and this was
a very healthy offensive line room last year. At some
point this year, I feel like you're gonna need to
rely on the depths. I feel like you're gonna have
to turn to a guy in a second quarter or

a second half, or maybe for a game or two.
They've still got to either develop that on the roster
or identify that it's not on the roster and find
it elsewhere.

up in just about twenty five minutes. Today's Bengals practice
was moved indoors about thirty minutes or so in They
worked out until about eleven o'clock. It was the last
practice before the preseason games begin. Zach Taylor talked after

practice and announced that Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase and
t Higgins and Dexter Lawrence are going to play. It's
going to be a few limited series, maybe one series.
Maybe that is the very definition of limited. I can't
think of a topic that we have spent more time
in August discussing in recent years than whether or not
Joe Burrow should play in games that do not count.

And for the majority of his time as the Bengals quarterback,
I have, like many, been opposed to him playing in
the preseason measuring risk versus reward. Do you want to
run the risk of him suffering an injury that's going
to impair his ability to help out when the games
actually count. How much can be gained by it? Do
you go overboard to protect the investment? And I will

admit that with their continued offensive struggles early in the
season that I changed my stance last offseason and it
was fine, let's have these guys play. And if you
remember the first preseason game, Joe Burrow looked terrific nine
of ten, a couple of touchdown passes. Bengals played excuse me,

the Eagles that night. The defense was atrocious. That foreshadowed
how the season was gonna unfold. But I think, like many,
to me, at least, Joe playing in the preseason made sense.
I'm not gonna lose my mind over this because I
can understand the argument that, hey, we've gotten off to
a lot of slow starts offensively, let's get some reps. Yes,

(30:49):
there's continuity, but you could always work on things. I
understand it if it was me, and for the most part,
I think we could be glad that it's not if
it was me. I don't think Joe Burrow would play.
I don't think Jamar Chase would play. I don't think
t Higgins would play. I don't think Dexter Lawrence would play.

(31:10):
Like number one, there has been a heightened level of
physicality in these practices, certainly a heightened intensity, and maybe
that hasn't been evident in all of them, but it's
been evident in a lot of them, certainly on Sunday,
and so they have ratcheted things up from a physical
perspective during training camp, which might lessen the need to

(31:33):
put some of these guys in a physical environment of
a preseason game, which doesn't count. There's also this Joe
and the starters played two of the three preseason games.
They did not play the last one. Joe played very
well in the first one, and the second one he
played okay, but he was under duress. The one thing

(31:55):
the Bengals seem to have going for them right now
is health. Now say the one thing. There's a lot
of things, so maybe I should correct myself, but one
of the things, maybe the biggest thing the Bengals have
going for themselves right now, is health. It doesn't mean
they've gotten through Trina Camp totally unscathed. Obviously, Shamar Stewart's hurt.
Bj Hill hasn't practiced yet. They're dealing with some soft

(32:17):
tissue issues with Brian Cook and Dax Hill, neither of
which right now at least seem to be a huge deal.
But the one thing this team has going for it
right now that might matter more than anything is health.
They have a good roster. We're talking a lot about
their rookie class. Cash is how to Caaro Davis. Players
like that because it feels like the Bengals have this

(32:39):
sort of team that isn't going to ask the world
of those guys. They're not asking Cash is how to
step in and be transformative. They're asking him to step
in and contribute. So far he looks capable. Same to
a degree for Tacario Davis. This team's healthy, comparatively speaking, healthy.
I sit here every afternoon and I listened to the

(33:01):
top of hour updates on ESPN Radio, and it feels
like every afternoon I'm hearing the anchor mention another injury
around the NFL. The Bengals will deal with injuries this season.
It's football. They're unavoidable. But at times, man, what stands
out more than anything else isn't so much your talent
top to bottom, it's how healthy is your talent top

(33:23):
to bottom. In twenty fifteen, the Bengals won twelve games.
Terrific team. Terrific team, didn't advance in the postseason, obviously,
but really good roster. I think you could argue top
to bottom, the best roster they've had this century. Yes,
the twenty twenty two and maybe twenty twenty six teams
will have something to say about that. But you want
to know what I remember most about that year in

(33:44):
the regular season, at least in early November, with the
Bengals having zero losses, reading the injury report and it
taking two seconds because there was nobody on it with
that team, when things start to unravel, when guys started
to get hurt. Also, if you go back to last

(34:05):
season offensively for the Bengals, Joe Burrow played, how did
the offense look in the first regular season game? Completely
and totally uneven? Which would suggest that there's maybe not
a huge correlation between having the guys who matter most
play in the preseason and having them ready to hit
the ground running once the regular season starts. I wouldn't

(34:27):
have Joe Burrow play. I wouldn't have the guys who
matter most play. And we always watch these games, you know,
maybe holding our hands up to our face and watching
peeking through our fingers. I'm actually physically doing that right
now for folks watching on YouTube and Twitter. You hold
your breath, don't you like the vibes are great right now.

(34:47):
Players seem to be dialed in. Team collectively seems to
have an edge. I think there's a renewed energy and
enthusiasm for who the guys. The front office is brought in.
The one thing that can just dump well rain buckets
of cold waterk into what we're getting today. On the enthusiasm,

(35:08):
on the optimism, maybe on their hopes to win a championship,
would be an injury, a significant injury, maybe multiple if
you understand they're gonna happen anyway. You get it right.
It's football. You incur some risk. But in the regular season,
the reward is you're trying to win games that matter.
In the preseason not so much. I wouldn't have these
guys play, I get it, man. The recent track record

(35:30):
of not starting off great, I get it fine. But
you would like to think that an offense that has
enjoyed continuity with an NFL coach in his eighth season,
partnered with the same quarterback for the last seven can
figure out ways to use the preseason and more importantly,
use training camp practices and the months leading up to

(35:52):
the season and use them to put together an offense
that has a better chance of competing once the real
games actually begin that don't involve unnecessarily throwing your quarterback
in harm's way. Joe is gonna play if he plays.
I hope he plays well, but I wouldn't have him
play at all. You're welcome to chime in at five

what the Reds offense is doing this year compared to

I still think this is the most dangerous team top

it before, and then my head started to hurt. Can
you outline some of those potential nightmare scenarios?

Well, right now you have got six six MLS teams
on six points, they've won those games that they have
played through the first two match days. What if all
six win again, Well, that means that the top four
teams with goal differential would go. Right now, Cincinnati is
sitting in a nice place at plus.

Four, but we don't know what else is going to happen. Look,
I think they're in a great spot.

Let me be very clear about that, because even if
they don't clinch with a win tonight, and there is
a scenario by which they can do that this evening,
a lot of the other teams that are undefeated, Dallas, Chicago,
Austin later in the week mo they have very difficult games.
Dallas has to travel to Teluca, Chicago has to play
Cruz Azul, which is possibly the best team in the tournament,

and Austin has to play Club America, which.

In my opinion and is the best team in the tournament.

It's sitting there for Cincinnati, I'd be surprised if we
have this conversation next week if we're not talking about

There is against an Atlas FC team that has already
been eliminated from this competition, and So that's part of
the mystery, because you know number one, how much collectively
will that team have turned its attention to Lega MX play.

Yeah, that's the tricky thing because he has two games
of video to work with of Atlas in this tournament,
and most of it might be irrelevant in terms of
preparing for this match. They are managed by one of

playing for opportunity.

If you see a lot of these kids for Atlas

of the league in Mexico, and we've been cheated out

because this Mini Mart in Beaver Creek, I guess has

reminds me of a story that unfolded about a year
and a half ago involving the University of Cincinnati and
a middle school in Tennessee. Are the two stories similar.

more blake because the school was, you know, using U
see logos. You know, they called themselves the Bearcats, which
is one thing, but they're using the trademark you see
logos and it's pretty cut and dry, you know. You see,
it gave him a season desist. And from what I understand,
they changed their name and rebranded their name and their logos.

I mean we've all seen, you know, youth teams and
different high schools and different types of schools. You know
have pro you know, pro and college team name and logos,
but those are typically part of a licensing agreement. You see.

couldn't get it done, failed to reach a vote during
an all night pre recess session, and the Senate ended
this weekend. So now they've got a punt to next month. Uh.
I know we've talked a lot about this piece of legislation.
What's next for it?

Speaker 8 (49:41):
Well, it goes to December or if you're not December, September,
so it's not dead. But you know, the big horror hurdle,
like anything else in Congress, is you know, getting enough
bipartisanship with you know, agreement on the details, you know,
the athlete compensation transfer restrictions in I L you know
what have you. You know, it's got give enough folks
to pass the Senate and it's got to go through

(50:02):
the House, and you know, it could come out of
the House with a different version, who knows, and we
all know that Congress they'd host a filibuster on you know,
picking a pizza, pizza toppings. They don't agree on anything.
So you know, hopefully something can get done here. College
sports desperately desperately needs it, and everybody agrees that there's

(50:22):
a problem. But good luck on agreeing on the solution.

Speaker 1 (50:25):
Yeah. So I guess if this fails, we go down
the road of more of the higher likelihood of conference
self governance. Would you agree.

Speaker 8 (50:35):
Absolutely? I mean for the time being, we would continue
the Wild West. But you know, the conferences, yeah, they
would have increased and looked to govern themselves, you know,
on revenue sharing, eligibility, compensation. But the problem with that
is you can get a big competitive balance problem where
you're you know, you're potentially running different versions of college athletics.
I'll under the NCAA umbrella. You know, it makes me think,

(50:58):
you know, when do the big ten in the SEC say, well, screwed,
We're just going to break off and do our own thing.
You know, does this lead to the super Conference? You know?
Very possible.

Speaker 1 (51:10):
Attorney Stewart W. Penrose from the Manilo Law Group is
with us. We talk sports and the law every Tuesday.
This is a story that you and I have not
touched on, but is interesting nonetheless, So the NBA is
looking into allegations that the Los Angeles Clippers used some
of their corporate sponsors to funnel money to Kawhi Leonard,
which would basically circumvent the league's salary cap. And so

(51:34):
a law firm has been retained to investigate the Clippers.
A trade between LA and the Toronto Raptors is on
hold until this investigation concludes. Walk me through here what
the burden of proof would have to be for the
NBA to enact punishments against the Clippers and by extension,
Kawhi Leonard.

Speaker 8 (51:53):
Well, mosts not a criminal prosecution. They don't have to
prove a case, you know, beyond a reasonable doubt or
anything like that. You know, the NBA simply is enforcing
their CBA and their league rules. You know the you
know the teams and NBA personnel. You know they by
being part of the NBA, they have to sign up
to be subject to all that. And you know, the
league and the commissioner they've got very substantial investigative authority

(52:16):
and disciplinary authority under the CBA. They can consider circumstantial evidence, emails, texts,
financial records, agreements, different communications. They don't have to go
through subpoenas and search for us. You know, if you
if you're part of the NBA, you have to cooperate

(52:38):
with their investigations.

Speaker 1 (52:39):
So if his contract gets avoided, what happens to money
that he's already been paid? What does his free agency
status look like? What legal avenues could the union use
to to fight on his behalf? I know I just
asked you three questions, so go ahead and wrap them
all into one answer.

Speaker 8 (52:56):
Well, well, thank you, ma, I appreciate that to be determined.
With all that, you know, it could get very very messy.
You know, the the Players Association is not going to
want a big contract to be unwound. They're they're they'll
try to fight it and you know, go through the
arbitration process, the appeals process. With that, you know, the

NBA they could secret payment of the improperly paid compensation.
It's not that that'sarily the same thing as give us
back every single dollar you.

Ever earned, you that you earned in the NBA.

Speaker 8 (53:27):
But yes, this could get very very messy. Could they

have a series in a dumbed down, simplified playbook, come

conversations with the linemen or the receivers or your coaches,
