There is a lot to chew on from last night.
It was a very pre e kind of preseason game.
It wasn't It was sloppy, There was lots of penalties,

It was disjointed. It looked like a preseason game. It
didn't look at all like what we're gonna watch in
a few weeks. That that didn't look like October November football.
That looked like August football. And it was amplified perhaps
by the moisture and the fact that we had some rain.
But the theme of the game, and we talked about
this yesterday, the theme of the game going in for

me at least, was depth. Right.

I think we all feel pretty good about the ones.

I think we all feel pretty good about, you know,
the starting offense and the guys who were gonna matter
the most on defense. But we talk a lot about
the Bengals having a really good roster. If they're gonna
have a really good roster, then then when depth is tested,
they have to pass. Last night was just one preseason game,
but it's all I have to react to for this
year's team, and the biggest takeaway was Bengals might have

some depth. There were lots of dudes, lots of guys
who either we've talked a little bit about during camp,
or who we've not talked about hardly at all during camp,
or who we know aren't going to be in featured
roles for this team, who did really, really good things.
We saw a lot of depth, start with the rookies.

Cash as how Jack Injuries. Jack Injuries hasn't had a
standout camp, and all the shows Tony and I have
done from Bengals training camp. I think we've mentioned his
name exactly one time. You couldn't watch the game last
night and not notice what he was doing catching the football.
Bengals have a really good and crowded tight end room.

My favorite player maybe on the team who's not named
Brian Cook, is Eric All but boy, there's a lot
of possibilities there at tight end. I think Jack Injuries
is the rookie, the draft pick that we talked about
the least, and you could argue last night he stood
out the most, or you can say that Brian Parker

stood out the most. Brian Parker looks already like he's
the best backup offensive lineman the Bengals have. He was
moving people at guard, he was moving people at center.
Brian Parker, I don't know that he has had a
standout training camp so far, but he was terrific last night.
Or it could have been Landon Robinson, and I will

admit to you this, like Landon Robinson, I don't know
any of us who doesn't root a little extra harder
for guys who come from service academies. There aren't a
lot of them, but we've talked about land and Robinson,
A's seventh rounder from Navy, more than we have anybody
else the Bengals drafted this year. And I've been skeptical, Okay, like, yeah,

we've talked a lot about this guy during mini camp
in the offseason. Oh what happens when training camp gets here?
What happens when the games get here? There were times
last night where Landon Robinson looked like he was unblockable.
And take it with a grain of salt. He's going
up against backups. The Lions didn't play anybody who mattered
last night. It's going up against backups. But you saw

a glimpse. You certainly didn't see a guy who was overwhelmed.
And I think you saw enough to make you want
to see more a week from tomorrow when the Bengals
take on the Chicago Bears. Kolbe Young caught a couple
of passes. He caught one pass where maybe a little bit,
a little bit of a brain fart. I felt like
he could have turned up field and got a first
down on a ball that he caught where they settled

for fourth and one.

Hall had a fumble recovery and half a sack like again,
we all know it's just preseason. We all know you
don't overreact to preseason. It's just one preseason game. But
it's the only body of work I have to go
by here, and the body of work so far from
the rookies, from the draft picks has been terrific, and like,

this is something that has to be better for the Bengals.
You know, last year we talked about how the light
bulb finally came on for Miles Murphy and it's great.
Miles Murphy's had a good camp. We've talked about, you know,
late late last year. By the end of the season,
DJ Turner had the profile of an ascending star in
his position, but the light bulb came on pretty late.

Bengals have to do a better job of accumulating draft
classes that they can get more out of immediately. They
need more instant impact draft picks. They don't have to
be stars, they don't have to be starters. But like
number one, ideally you're drafting for depth, and I do

believe in large part because they're set on one side
of the football and the work they did in free agency,
this wasn't a draft, and you know, it was pretty
abundantly clear once they traded away their first round pick,
they weren't going to have to use this draft to
find guys that were going to be counted on to
you know, overhaul a position group or make an immediate,

large impact. The hopes for a season not resting on
any of these rookies. Drafting for depth, what was on
display last night. Depth If you can consistently, as an
organization almost every year, if you can consistently get quality

first year production from your rookie classes, that's how you
have sustained success. That's how you have sustained success. That's
how you consistently have the ability to build really good rosters.
That's how you have an organization where you don't have
to make reaches for veteran players that are maybe gonna

have to be overpaid.

Like if you can get a lot out.

Of your cheap labor, not just your first rounders, and yeah, man,
it'd be great if every single player you draft can contribute.
It doesn't work that way, but that's something that this
team has to start getting a lot of really really
important contributions from players they draft in year one. Maybe
they don't get that this year, but last night last

night at least made you think that they've got a
chance to have some guys who even as depth pieces,
even as backups, can contribute Year one Orlando Brown and look, man,
there's lots of other like really good stuff to talk
about as it relates to last night.

A lot of really good stuff.

Last night I thought was a net positive and a
lot of players stood out for really good things and
mainly depth pieces. There were some players, as is the
case in every preseason game, that stand out for all
the wrong reasons. And maybe they're young guys like Taj Brooks,

or players who are clinging to a roster spot like
Dejon Anthony. And then there's then there's Orlando Brown. And
like I, I don't want to overreact to one game,
don't want to overreact to one moment. Don't want to

put a guy in a doghouse because he had a
bad game. Don't want to put a guy in the
doghouse because he had a bad moment. But Orlando Brown
had one last night where he gets absolutely destroyed for
a sack. And you know, guys get beat. Sometimes guys

get beat at the point of attack. Guys get beat
by players who are not stars. Or looking to earn
roster spots. But maybe the biggest, I don't know, and
most glaring sort of bad thing that happened last night

was Orlando Brown missing a block, getting whiffed or whipping
on a block, getting beaten and giving up a sack
that I think made all of us go Okay, Number one,
let's get Joe out of there.

Number two, Orlando Brown.

Yikes. I don't want to overreact to that. None of
us should. But let's be honest about Orlando Brown. Okay,
he was sixty sixth out of eighty nine qualifying tackles
in Pro Football Focuses grading last year. Heavily weighed down

by a run blocking grade that was below sixty. His
Pro Football Focus grade has gone down every year since
twenty twenty two. So let's be honest about this, Okay.
It would be unsurprising if that trend continued.

As we often say on this show, there's room for
multiple truths. One of those truths, at least to me,
is if Orlando Brown is your weakest link on the
offensive line, you probably have a good offensive line. And
I think we all feel like the Bengals might have
a good offensive line In large part because of the
way they played in the second half of the season
last year, having Amrius Mims, having Dylan Fairchild, Ted Carris,

bringing back Dalton Reisner. If Orlando Brown is your fifth
best offensive lineman, you probably have a pretty good offensive line.
But on any team, you're always looking to fix the
weakest link at any position group on any team. And so, like,

(11:36):
none of us want to overreact to one moment in
one preseason game, none of us. None of us do.
But I think what last night did is it provided
a reminder that there were these moments, even amid some
really good offensive line play from Orlando Brown, where you
were like, oh boy, not sure. Kind of feels like

Orlando's best days are behind him as a football player.
And I think last night was a reminder of you
know what, we there might be a reality where Orlando
Brown's regression continues statistically he's been regressing every year since
twenty twenty two. Might be a world where he is
their worst offensive lineman and as awesome of a career

as he has had, as as as much as we'll
all acknowledge, he's going to be here for even longer
than we expected, because he got a contract extension this offseason.
How do you not have at least at a little
tiny amount of concern about the left tackle spot. And
if you have at least a little tiny bit of
concern about the left tackle spot, you have to have
in the back of your mind what some alternatives might be,

don't you Five point three seven four nine fifteen thirty
is our number? Eight six six seven oh two three
seven seven six works as well.

Very little time for phone calls this week. We've got

But the question is about left tackle. How concerned are
you do the Bengals have an Orlando Brown problem or
all of us overreacting. Do you believe that when the
bell rings and the games actually matter, that he's going
to answer the call? He may and maybe he deserves

that benefit of the doubt, or did you look at
last night the way I did and went, oh yeah,
I saw that last year. Not every play, maybe not
every game, but I saw something that looked like that
last year. By the way, you add to it, some
of the video we've all seen of Orlando Brown in
training camp struggling to block cash as How.

Tony and I have watched that.

Up close and in person, and it hasn't just been
cash as How, But I think that's Those are the
moments where he's been matched up against cashes where Orlando
Brown has looked like he has struggled the worst. Nobody's
saying bench them, nobody is saying cut him, nobody is
saying go overpay for whichever left tackle is out there.
But you do kind of stick that in the back
of your mind and you add it to some of

the stuff we saw from or Orlando last year. And
I don't know about you, but for me, I'm concerned
is maybe not the right word, but I'm I'm wondering
what sort of season we're going to see from Orlando Brown.
I think that's as fair as I can make. Five
point three, seven, four, nine, fifteen thirty is our number.

There was also last night a lesson if you have kids,
if you have like young people in your life, folks
who are trying to find their way in the world.
There was a great lesson that I think they can
learn based on last night's game, And it's immediate aftermath,

Tony Pike training camp report. No practice today, they are
busy this weekend. A practice tomorrow. At practice. On Sunday,
Tony joins us at three forty five. We'll obviously focus
in great detail on last night's preseason game, where the

good outweighed the bad. Part of the good was the
performance of Dante Myers. Paul Danner Junior and I have
had a running gag for years about the Moeger of
the Moegger Show Award, which goes to a wide receiver,
a skill player. Jack Andreies is eligible. By the way,
the kind of comes off comes from off the radar,

and everybody starts talking about him and tweeting about him
and learning more about him and imagining what his role
could be and talking about, you know, whether or not
he can make the team. Dante Myers is right now
the clubhouse leader for that award, and they used him
last night. Jet Sweet run for thirteen yards, he caught
three passes. He looked like a guy who could carve

out a role in this offense. But like this, to
me is the best part. And I think there's a
lesson here. So Dante Myers has been making plays in
camp and he is being talked about a lot in camp,
and you could see there was a concerted effort to
give him a chance to shine in the game. Last night,

He by no stretch has clinched a spot on this team,
but he got a ringing endorsement from Joe Burrow, And
I think there's a lesson here. Here's Joe Burrow telling
a story about reaching out to Dante Meyers to ask
him to come to a throwing session this offseason.

He just loves ball. You know, I was the week
before training camp. We I texted her and I was like, Hey,
are you in town? He's like, I can be. And
I was like, can you be here tomorrow at eleven?

Come to find out, he drove from Atlanta that night
to be there to throw the next day. That's kind
of guy that he is. He's out a great camp.
He's quick, shifty, understands what we're trying to do. You know,
he's played a lot in the CFL, so you know
he comes over here hasn't played a lot in the NFL,
but he's he's got a lot of reps under his belt.

This guy that we've we've seen a lot out of him. Four.

All right, there's Joe Burrow talking with reporters last night
and the audio wasn't great, but he's telling the story about,
you know, asking Dante Myers, hey, you know I want
to come from can you be available? And Joe quoted
Dante Myers with three important words, quote I can be.
And so he drives, I guess all night from Atlanta
and he's there the next morning for a throwing session

and he's a fun story. He went to Presbyterian on
a academic scholarship. Delta State, played in the CFL, won
a title Great Cup the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Fun story, but
also a cool lesson. Those words I can be if

the most important person where you work, if you're up
and coming, if you're the new guy, if you're the intern,
if you're the co op kid, if you're the person
on the bottom floor. Those are the three words I
can be. I'm not trying to make too much out

of this, but there's there's a lesson there. Like we've
had young people who've worked for us. Back in the
day we were allowed to have interns, and there have
been times where it's like, hey, man, need somebody to
come in. Can you be here in the morning to
do this? The ones who stand out are the ones
who say some variation of I can be.

you're not in town, but can you be here tomorrow,
and Jamar Chase is like, Dude, I'm Jamar Chase.

not FORGET Sc cincinnati team is not a young. Team
they're in fact a very old team and a very experienced.

Team they have some players who have played in some
really big games and have won some really important.

Like wobadot and of Course evander and so it's not
as if this team is extreme. Inexperienced AND i know
for a fact that when you are on the field
and when things don't go, well or when mistakes, happen
or when things don't go, right you can't look over

to the sideline and and hope that your coach comes
up with some magic saying and some magic hand signal
where he can just all of a sudden change the
way you play at the drop of a. Hat it
has to come from the, players and SO i would
say that it is a two fold. Issue it, is,
Yes pat being able to get more out of his
group than moments that don't quite go their, way but

it's also the leaders on this team stepping up and
being able to stabilize a group that is really fragile
when things don't go their.

THAT i THINK Fc cincinnati's structure at, times because they

are much more attack minded, players you have to have

Player WHO i think is going to be fantastic IN
mls but is very, inexperienced very good on the, ball

situations and not get exposed if you are going to
play with wing backs who get super high up the
field than who are more attack. Minded that's something That

i've noticed WITH Fc cincinnati is that when they get,
exposed a lot of times it's in, transition and a
lot of times they just quite, frankly they lose their
focus a little bit when they are defending their. Boss
so those are some areas of improvement THAT i know
have been identified by THE Sc cincinnati coaching, staff and
now it's just a matter of helping them get to

what the injury issue was and so they were sort.
Of looking here so what were some of the scenarios
that the doctors were preparing for since they didn't know
the exact nature of the procedure until they they. Actually

A lot of this is, going to determine as, you
just said on. Inter OPERATIVE findings so i wants to
see when you're in there and it's going to, be
you know does the ligament just look a?

kind of found out just recently he Did Have another,
tommy john surgery which, is very unfortunate especially From A revision,
tommy john's standpoint definitely increases the complexity of the, length
of recovery the. Length of return but obviously it was

this pear was obviously in a place where they, did not,
feel you know something which had become more more common
recently in the last, couple of years as we hear of,
an internal bracing which will be a more and more
common terminology where you just basically use almost like a
really really really strong little piece of rope that you

(01:33:22):
tie into this tendon and you can weave it in
and out sometimes and DO that with prp and stem
cells and you can facilitate some healing and avoid of repair.
And sounds like unfortunately that wasn't the case.

With the surgery so we're talking about a timeline that
has him missing the next twelve, to eighteen months so
that's obviously all of. Twenty twenty seven it's interesting he
came off the injured list a, few weeks ago, and
you know when he went back on he reported, that he,
was you know there was, some discomfort right and he

thought it was, just you know normal. Post surgery aches
how do you differentiate between post surgery egg if those are,
normal at all and something more.

Severe like this it's.

Difficult because you can't really distinguish that. By pain alone
and you know it's gonna be, where you hurt, how
you hurt, AND you know, i would say if you're
having similar type pain that you did, during your, recovery
you know and if it's if it's the same, type
of discomfort will you assume that's probably just from your

previous arthroscopy surgery and you're removing bone chips and bone
spurs and that that'll continue.

To get better.

And, so you know there can be a lot of
overlap too with elbows with, where YOU hurt and i
mean you can have pain referred, to certain areas, AND so.

Can BE tough if i was just coming off of,
a surgery too with, A clean out i would probably
also assume THAT this discomfort i was having was just
post surgical when it would get, Better with time i'd
work my way through it and get.

Back to throwing this is Not His first, timmy john
surgery and and, there's a very very very long list
of pitchers and other players Who Have had tommy john surgery.
And A, return tj antone Who's in, the reds bullpen
has had. Three of them he's having. A good season
but but how much does the accumulation of these sorts

of injuries and these, SORTS of, procedures i guess jeopardize
his ability to not even just, realize his potential but when,
he comes back not end up back on the.

INJURED list again, i.

Tell, people you know it's like if somebody's, building a
house right and you don't like the way, the stophics
look they just they rip it off and they put
on an entirely new and they get new lumber and
new parts. And, new everything well when you're dealing with
a human, body, and surgery like there are, no, New
parts right it's not new bone that. You're going into
it's not new tendons, that you're addressing and new scar

tissue That you're going it's all. The same tissue it's all.
The same bone and, so you know your bone tunnel
placement can. Become more difficult uh, the you know the
amount of scar tissue that forms and replaces your native tissue.
Continues to progress and so that's WHAT that's why i
was explained things is that it's not you can just
go and get a new two by four out of

the out of, the hardware store like you got to
use the same one that you had and just try
to fix it and get it back to uh where.
You want, it so yeah that every time you go
back in. That's, THAT'S complex actually i wanted to Bring
up j ANTON because, when i, was you know doing some,
research on this THAT'S the guy, i thought of and
we'd actually.

is he gonna have to adjust How he pitches he's
gonna have to dial? Back to velocity is does he
have no other choice but to dial back to velocity
when he finally?

Does come back you wonder like velocity and pitching velocity
is directly related to your. Risk of injury right if you're,
throwing a ball and these guys are throwing a baseball
with enough rotational force that it should literally rip your,
shoulder or ripo you should literally rip your arm off

every time you throw a ball like you.

Throw that hard and.

Speaker 3 (01:37:50):
It's just it's all the muscular forces and the ligaments
and everything that hold. Things in place but the amount
of like torque, Is is incredible and you wonder if
it's more, the alternate pitches, the spin rates it's the
obsession of that aspect of throwing that you might. Want
TO tweak and i don't know if just a, straight

(01:38:11):
you know, two seam forcing. Straight, forcing fastball yeah the velocity,
is A problem but i think it's probably just the
more the rotational forces that you're creating with these off
speed pitches where you're throwing a lot of those from
a lot. Of high velocity that could be maybe something
that you really want to consider more than just, straight

(01:38:31):
THROWING hard, because i.

Mean you got, to.

Speaker 3 (01:38:32):
Throw hard right you gotta throw ninety eight ninety times
one hundred miles an hour to be a successful pitcher in.
This LEAGUE anymore and i think you get, BACK to
that i think you get back to throwing hard and just,
maybe you know change your mechanics a little bit for those.
Off speed pitches what is.

The likely timeline and not just talking, about him returning
but like between now, and his return when can you
start throwing?

In all likelihood what is what does the? Timeline?

Look like well and it's tough, too with, me you
know with the revision nature of the, surgery like that
you know. SLOWS things, down i mean you're probably not
doing any throwing at all, for you know the first
COUPLE of months i would anticipate then a couple of
months after that you're just working on a. Range of

motion and you know you're probably looking.

At man a. NUMBER of months i mean.

YOU'RE you're probably, i would, say you know maybe five maybe,
in this one you do five six months before you
even do some. LIGHTE gentle, stuff i mean especially if
you're looking at eighteen, months for revision it could be
a full year before you really start doing any significant.
