This is a beautiful time of year, isn't it. Because
we're kind of closing in on Valentine's Day. We've don't
got paras back yet, and the beautiful cakes tell us
about your show. People are loving this show.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Yes, it's fun. It's it's so much. You know, there's
so many layers in the cake, and I think that
definitely is a describes our show perfectly. There's so many
little layers. There's so many little treats and little nuggets
and things that you have to find that the title
just doesn't tell you about. It's very misleading. And I
think in a beautiful way, rounds that where you think

you just might get a simple rom com about these
two strangers doing something fun, it just it dives so
much deeper into their humanity and into people trying to
make the most out of life and get through the day.
And it's really how we function and how we thrive.

It's really it's really special.

What is the setup?
Speaker 3 (02:10):
So you're in New Yorker, yep, right and raised, and
we have a tourist in town.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Yes, yes, So I played the character of Robin, who
is born and raised in Brooklyn, who recently moved to
Manhattan and is scheduled to go pick up her sister's
fiance's son Okay from the airport. The son has never
met his father, and chaos ensues. And so the son
(02:37):
is played by Santeti who plays Dubo. And he is
from the UK, first time in the States, first time
to New York, and he only knows of New York
through the lens of his favorite movies. Uh huh, so
he thinks he's coming into a film set essentially. And yeah,
it's just it's wild, like it's just insanity every step
of the way.

Did this show open originally in London?
Speaker 4 (03:00):
It did didn't come here.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
It did it up on the West in and I
never got to see it, unfortunately, But I was obsessed
with the music. So I feel really really honored to
be a part of it here. But yes, it's it's
having it's a well actually, it had its American debut
over the summer at Art in Boston. And it's good
to be in New York. Like the show feels like
(03:22):
it's home.
Speaker 4 (03:23):
Yes, it's definitely New York. You're very comfortable. Ye're right.
What are some of your favorite places in New York?
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Oh, my goodness, let's see. I love first. I'm gonna
start with food because I'm a foodie. Yeah, okay, everything
to do in New York is eat And one of
my favorite restaurants is like Blue Ribbon Sushi and Columbus Circle.
I love their little cheeky, little rooftop. It sits like
ten people, so it's so intimate. That's my favorite place
(03:50):
for food. They have an oxtail fried rice that wow,
y'all should I tell y'all? Don't say I didn't tell
you nothing? And then I think just to like to
just sort of relax and zen out a little bit.
I love going up near Lincoln Center and they have
these little succeeding areas where there's just a bunch of

students walking around. Yeah, people passing by, but it feels
very tranquil. And those are my two favorite places to
chill out.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
So people are coming to town as tourists, that's what
you would recommend, I'd recommend, yeah, and definitely coming to
your show.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
I meant to. Yeah, it's a love letter. It's a
love letter to the city, it's a love letter to
music theater. It's a love letter to the humanity that
we're all trying to access. It really is I just
I hate to keep saying it this way, but it
really is special. Like people have described it as feeling
like a really warm hug and meving the theater feeling
very held, which.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
Is yeah, we all need that. Yes, So this is
your return to Broadway the first time as a mom.
How are you managing everything? And congratulations by thank you.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
I'm every is a new day, you know, every day
is a new challenge. But it's such a blessing. It's
nice that my daughter gets to see me living my
dreams because I know that she's very proud of me.
She loves the show. She always sings the songs from
the show. A few weeks ago, I had to be
on vocal rest and when I came home, I was
(05:19):
telling her, like, you know, mommy has to whisper, and
so she decided to sing the songs for me. So
she's living.
Speaker 4 (05:25):
Oh so she's your understudy, correct, great Robert.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
So myself, there's Phoenix Best. We just hired another beautiful
actress as Robert, and then there's the fourth Zora McKinnon.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
Ah, huh, okay, how is it for you when you
have to I don't know, have you missed any shows yet,
like have.
Speaker 4 (05:42):
You had to take time?
Speaker 5 (05:42):
Have?
Speaker 2 (05:43):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (05:43):
Like where is your heart? Are you feeling like? Oh yeah,
I want to do this.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
It's hard. It's hard. It's because it's a two hander,
and we've developed such a beautiful relationship the four of us,
so myself and Sam, Phoenix and Vinnie who are the standbys,
we were really really close and when one person's out,
that's fifty percent of the show is different. So it's
a it's a it's it feels heavy, but you also
(06:09):
have to take care of yourself and rest is important,
right And everyone that is carrying this show is so
incredible that they no one misses a beat. So I'm
probably harder on myself than anybody else's. But but yeah,
it's hard. But I mean, the show's in such great
shape that it's not no one notices and someone's not there,
(06:30):
you know what I mean. It's just it's beautiful.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
But I'm sure, but I'm sure people want to see
you as well. But and how is it for Sam?
This is his Broadway debut?
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Is it's his Broadway debut? He is he is an
incredible human and incredible talent, and he's like his life
has been a brooded essentially, you know, he just doesn't
live here and he is a tourist who is now
a local overnight you know, and like working here here,
(07:00):
and he's doing it beautifully. I'm just so proud to
call him my friend more than my coworker and write, Yeah,
he's just he's incredible.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
He would you two go to Paris baggett together?
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Oh yes, Oh yes, here's the theory. Yeah, I might
take this on by myself and he might have another one.
I feel like he might do a pastry honestly, yeah,
more than a cake.
Speaker 4 (07:20):
Those are good to pick up and go.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
Yeah, he shows me as like a pastry. Oh Kamathella.
So but yes, I must need I have to take him.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
Yeah, we're going to bring him that as a treat.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
And you were saying that the show feels like a
love letter to New York. So what's one of your
favorite New York City moments?
Speaker 2 (07:38):
Oh? Favorite New York City moment? Oh there's so many. Actually,
recently I had one my my daughter and I and
my sister we went to Rockefeller or the Christmas Eve. Oh,
which sounds like ridiculous, like why would you do that?
It was I thought I was going to be crazy.
(08:00):
Actually wasn't. It wasn't as busy as you think. It
was so magical. There was such an energy in the
air of like everyone is here because they really really
want to be and it was. And Sanna was just
walking down the street and stopped and talked to my
daughter in front of the tree. It was it was
really really magical. Yeah, and you know, I lived in
the city for ten years before I left, and I
(08:22):
got a little jaded. I got I sort of like
forgot about the magic that this city provides. And that
was the greatest reminder. And to see it through my
three year old's eyes, I was like, this is actually,
this is this is magic. Yeah, Sanna is walking down
the street, you know what I mean, I don't have
to go wait in line right at a mall right.
It was really special and she'll never forget it.
Speaker 4 (08:43):
So, yeah, that's beautiful.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
A lot of your show takes place around Christmas.
Speaker 4 (08:46):
Is there a Christmas theme? Oh you show?
Speaker 5 (08:49):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (08:49):
Yeah, yeah, there's this beautiful holiday theme. He they planned
their wedding around the holidays, so when he's when he's here,
the lights are up, the you know, he wants to
go ice, he wants to do all the things. And
of course my character is like, no, thanks.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
Exactly what you're describing to us. She needs to find
the magic again.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
Exactly exactly, and that our director says so beautifully that
everything that happens in our show would have never happened
if these two didn't meet. So my character is really
just going through the day to day to get by.
She's struggling with her mental health, she's struggling with her finances.
She's just in a rough spot, but she's making it
(09:32):
happen like a lot of us are. And after meeting
this other character who is like almost recklessly optimistic, I
mean he is just he sees his glass not half full, baby,
it's overflowing always, and it just sort of ignites something
in her about what hope can do for your mental
(09:53):
health and what it can do for your life in
the getting by, and she does the same thing for him.
She grounds him in a way of dealing with the
reality in a way that it's like healthier. It's just
it's yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
It sounds incredibly inspiring, and as it inspired you as well.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
As it has. I was, you know, being a new mom.
I was in a place in my life where I
was experiencing feelings that I'd never had before about what
it means to be happy and what it means to
be sad and how to navigate those things. And this
show really helped me find a healthy, regular way to
(10:38):
manage the highs and lows of this business, of this life.
And I'm really really thankful to every day, you know,
eight shows a week, had the opportunity to show people
how we can balance those things.

What would be your go to? I do?
Speaker 2 (11:25):
I do it's red velvet. Specifically, my auntie pat me
she rest in peace. She made this red velvet. Oh
you had to get a slice as soon as she
put it down because it was going to be gone.
But then minutes it was so good, cream cheese, icing,
some sort of nuts sprinkled on top. I don't know
what it was, but it was delicious. So batcake mm hmm.

But then any red velvet cake will do.
Speaker 4 (11:49):
Okay, that's really the one. It's here. Paris Baget brought

Yeah, we had pook velvet or oh I can't yeah, specifically.

Oh no, oh yeah, do you have any pre show
rituals something that you do backstage?
Speaker 4 (12:31):
I do?
Speaker 2 (12:31):
I do? I get to that jokingly, I get to
the theater way too early. People always talk about it,
But I get there very early to take my time
doing my makeup really like pink and create the image.
And then I go into the other dressing room. I
lay out my yoga mat and I meditate and I
pray and I stretch And this is all before the
(12:52):
vocal warm up. This is just to like really ground
myself and center myself, and then I do my vocal
warm up. But you know, the show, like I said,
it's just the two of us. It's so exposing.
Speaker 1 (13:03):
So I want to make sure I'm like super grounded
and mocked in before we start, because there's nowhere to
hide or there's no like let me take this ten
minutes off stage to regroup.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
It doesn't exist in this show. So I take a
lot of time like locking in and turn the lights
low and getting into my groove. So it's it feels
very My dresser room feels like a like a little retreat,
a little Yeah, it's getting Bollie, it's given.
Speaker 4 (13:30):
Oh oh that's beautiful. Yeah that sounds really nice.
Speaker 3 (13:35):
I'm a little hard to leave at some point, yes,
except for the stage, which is some beautiful place, right
that's home. If we were to peek at your playlist.
What gets you going? It could be Broadway show tunes
or just anything you love right now.
Speaker 2 (13:51):
Well, I'm a little like Corny in the fact that
I make a playlist for every character. It's like my
favorite thing to do. And so Robin's playlist is fire.
It's got a lot of Tribe call Quest on it.
It has a lot of common a lot of a
lot of just sort of like late nineties early two
(14:12):
thousands hip hop that is just such a vibe. That
is music that I actually didn't really listen to before,
but I'm locked in. So I'm a huge Tribe call
Quest fan now, So I'm like, can I kick it
at the beginning of the show I'm living. So that's
kind of where I'm at for this show in particular,
but it chang changes every show.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
Okay, So earlier we talked about your favorite cake, which
is red velvet, and Paris Bagette is here with pink velvet.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
I've seen it.

What would be your favorite kind of cake then to
celebrate with after a successful show.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
I think it might be Paris Bagett's pink velvet. I'm
gonna go ahead and say that. Yeah, even though I
haven't tried it because I have a feeling. Yes, it's
about to be a new favorite.

Do you want to give a yest? Yes, we should

I think now's the time I've been eyeing you, easy girl.

And you were saying that the show feels like a
love letter to New York. So what's one of your
favorite New York City moments?
Speaker 2 (07:38):
Oh? Favorite New York City moment? Oh there's so many. Actually,
recently I had one my my daughter and I and
my sister we went to Rockefeller or the Christmas Eve. Oh,
which sounds like ridiculous, like why would you do that?
It was I thought I was going to be crazy.
(08:00):
Actually wasn't. It wasn't as busy as you think. It
was so magical. There was such an energy in the
air of like everyone is here because they really really
want to be and it was. And Sanna was just
walking down the street and stopped and talked to my
daughter in front of the tree. It was it was
really really magical. Yeah, and you know, I lived in
the city for ten years before I left, and I
(08:22):
got a little jaded. I got I sort of like
forgot about the magic that this city provides. And that
was the greatest reminder. And to see it through my
three year old's eyes, I was like, this is actually,
this is this is magic. Yeah, Sanna is walking down
the street, you know what I mean, I don't have
to go wait in line right at a mall right.
It was really special and she'll never forget it.
Speaker 4 (08:43):
So, yeah, that's beautiful.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
A lot of your show takes place around Christmas.
Speaker 4 (08:46):
Is there a Christmas theme? Oh you show?
Speaker 5 (08:49):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (08:49):
Yeah, yeah, there's this beautiful holiday theme. He they planned
their wedding around the holidays, so when he's when he's here,
the lights are up, the you know, he wants to
go ice, he wants to do all the things. And
of course my character is like, no, thanks.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
Exactly what you're describing to us. She needs to find
the magic again.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
Exactly exactly, and that our director says so beautifully that
everything that happens in our show would have never happened
if these two didn't meet. So my character is really
just going through the day to day to get by.
She's struggling with her mental health, she's struggling with her finances.
She's just in a rough spot, but she's making it
(09:32):
happen like a lot of us are. And after meeting
this other character who is like almost recklessly optimistic, I
mean he is just he sees his glass not half full, baby,
it's overflowing always, and it just sort of ignites something
in her about what hope can do for your mental
(09:53):
health and what it can do for your life in
the getting by, and she does the same thing for him.
She grounds him in a way of dealing with the
reality in a way that it's like healthier. It's just
it's yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
It sounds incredibly inspiring, and as it inspired you as well.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
As it has. I was, you know, being a new mom.
I was in a place in my life where I
was experiencing feelings that I'd never had before about what
it means to be happy and what it means to
be sad and how to navigate those things. And this
show really helped me find a healthy, regular way to
(10:38):
manage the highs and lows of this business, of this life.
And I'm really really thankful to every day, you know,
eight shows a week, had the opportunity to show people
how we can balance those things.
Speaker 4 (10:53):

Speaker 3 (10:55):

What would be your go to? I do?
Speaker 2 (11:25):
I do it's red velvet. Specifically, my auntie pat me
she rest in peace. She made this red velvet. Oh
you had to get a slice as soon as she
put it down because it was going to be gone.
But then minutes it was so good, cream cheese, icing,
some sort of nuts sprinkled on top. I don't know
what it was, but it was delicious. So batcake mm hmm.
(11:47):
But then any red velvet cake will do.
Speaker 4 (11:49):
Okay, that's really the one. It's here. Paris Baget brought
it to us.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
So has velvet.
Speaker 3 (11:53):
Yeah, we had pook velvet or oh I can't yeah, specifically.

scenes and kind of find out what's going on back
there with you actors.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
Oh no, oh yeah, do you have any pre show
rituals something that you do backstage?
Speaker 4 (12:31):
I do?
Speaker 2 (12:31):
I do? I get to that jokingly, I get to
the theater way too early. People always talk about it,
But I get there very early to take my time
doing my makeup really like pink and create the image.
And then I go into the other dressing room. I
lay out my yoga mat and I meditate and I
pray and I stretch And this is all before the
(12:52):
vocal warm up. This is just to like really ground
myself and center myself, and then I do my vocal
warm up. But you know, the show, like I said,
it's just the two of us. It's so exposing.
Speaker 1 (13:03):
So I want to make sure I'm like super grounded
and mocked in before we start, because there's nowhere to
hide or there's no like let me take this ten
minutes off stage to regroup.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
It doesn't exist in this show. So I take a
lot of time like locking in and turn the lights
low and getting into my groove. So it's it feels
very My dresser room feels like a like a little retreat,
a little Yeah, it's getting Bollie, it's given.
Speaker 4 (13:30):
Oh oh that's beautiful. Yeah that sounds really nice.
Speaker 3 (13:35):
I'm a little hard to leave at some point, yes,
except for the stage, which is some beautiful place, right
that's home. If we were to peek at your playlist.
What gets you going? It could be Broadway show tunes
or just anything you love right now.
Speaker 2 (13:51):
Well, I'm a little like Corny in the fact that
I make a playlist for every character. It's like my
favorite thing to do. And so Robin's playlist is fire.
It's got a lot of Tribe call Quest on it.
It has a lot of common a lot of a
lot of just sort of like late nineties early two
(14:12):
thousands hip hop that is just such a vibe. That
is music that I actually didn't really listen to before,
but I'm locked in. So I'm a huge Tribe call
Quest fan now, So I'm like, can I kick it
at the beginning of the show I'm living. So that's
kind of where I'm at for this show in particular,
but it chang changes every show.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
Okay, So earlier we talked about your favorite cake, which
is red velvet, and Paris Bagette is here with pink velvet.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
I've seen it.
Speaker 3 (14:41):
What would be your favorite kind of cake then to
celebrate with after a successful show.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
I think it might be Paris Bagett's pink velvet. I'm
gonna go ahead and say that. Yeah, even though I
haven't tried it because I have a feeling. Yes, it's
about to be a new favorite.
Speaker 4 (14:57):
Do you want to give a yest? Yes, we should
we get it to try it.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
I think now's the time I've been eyeing you, easy girl.
Oh now wait a minute. Oh sorry, there's probably a
better way I can do this.
Speaker 4 (15:09):
But no, this looks amazing.

Oh my god, here lady, minute, I don't go.
