Hang on just second for the line, just.

Speaker 4 (00:13):

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Jando first starting in and out of treating the basses
like Gus became you did. Everything is so can see
and everything here is Sunday, so it's right, so.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
Well, good morning, folks. Guess what.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Springer is there?

Speaker 3 (01:30):
We're here? It is Oh my gosh. Now am I
saying that there will not be another little frost come through? Okay,
we got something looking a little bit on the edge
of frost coming up here, but that's for the further
northern part of the listening area as opposed to the
majority of you folks that are hearing my voice right now.

(01:50):
And hey, I'm not worried about it. I've got stuff
going out. I'll throw a little blanket over or sheet
over it even if I need to. I don't think
I'm gonna need to. But anyway, it's time to get
out there and get stuff done. Tomato planting season, let's
get it going. You know, here's the deal on tomatoes.
We have a short tomato season down south. Now you're thinking, well, wait,

(02:12):
we have a longer growing season done. Yes, we do.
But tomatoes, once it gets hot, they don't like to set.
The big slicer types. Little small cherries and grapes they
set well well, pretty well even in the heat, but
the slicer's not so much. So what are we going
to do. Well, We're going to get tomatoes that mature
pretty quickly to get the best harvest we can out

(02:33):
of them, the most harvest, and then we're going to
plant them as early as we can. And we're going
to have tomatoes hopefully that I have a good little
size and a head start on them. And that's what
we do. That's what we do. And we get too hot,
that's fine, we just move on. We've got plenty of
other things to plant. But it's time to get those
things in. And I know, I know we could have
another possible frost coming up, but listen, you gotta get

(02:57):
them in. You gotta get them covered up when we
do have a little bit of a late frost coming in.
Or you can just be extra safe and wait. But
you're cutting your season a little shorter if you wait
too long. So don't wait too long. If you're gonna
wait until you can talk me into waiting until March,
if you want to, for especially north of I ten
parts of the listening area. If you're gonna be a

(03:18):
little on the go with the average, but I say
it's time to have fun, let's get that done. Hey,
guess what I'm gonna be at D and D Feed today.
D and D Feed to day that's up in Tomball,
twenty west of Tomball from twelve to two, and I'll
be doing questions and answers on anything you got. If
you've got weeds, throw them in a sack, bring them in,

(03:40):
let's take a look at them, any kind of photos.
We can take a look at, diagnostics of any type,
and suggestions for how to have a more bountiful, beautiful place.
That's what we're gonna be doing at D and D.
So I hope you're coming out and see us. We're
gonna be given some night of us giveaways at D
and D Feed today got some purial. That's the fifteen

(04:01):
five to ten, the red bag from Nitrofoss Imperial fifteen
five to ten. It is a good early greenup. You
want to do an early greenup, that's the optional early
greenup we put on the calendar I put on my calendar.
You need to get that done pretty soon. It's coming
up here, so maybe you come out and win a bag,

(04:23):
or you actually purchase a bag if you like to
do that. They got that there. They carry all the
night Foss products at D and D Feed and it
will also be given away some barricade too, So if
you would like to maybe have an opportunity to win
some barricade, come on out and we'll do that because
it's time for that as well a D and D feed.

(04:44):
If you go to my schedule, you'll see the optional
early greenup here coming up, and you need to get
a product like fifteen five to ten to get that
job done. A lot of people are getting the bugs.
It's starting to warm up a little bit more. When
we get a few blooms popping out in nature, you

(05:04):
know red bud blooming. I don't know if you live
where there's a dogwood, dogwood blooming, those early blooms on trees.
That's when spring fever hits big, big, big time, and
you're going to want to have a beautiful landscape. When
you do that, a gorgeous landscape, and it can be
at your house. That kind of landscape can be at yours,

(05:25):
It can be your place. If you give folks that
Pierce Scapes a call. Pierce Escapes, they're the professionals in
this and the thing that I would encourage you to
do is go check out their website. Even if you're
not thinking about doing landscape work just yet, go out
and check out their website pierscapes dot com. You'll see

(05:46):
the kind of work they do and no matter what
you need, they are a complete landscape service. I mean,
we're talking about designing a landscape, installing an entire landscape,
fixing irrigation or stalling. Are doing lighting for oh, just
beautiful outdoors, just sitting outside as the weather, you know,

(06:07):
is warming up a little bit and it's so nice
to be outside. Landscape, lighting, drainage work, all kinds of things.
Piercecapes two eight one three seven fifty sixty two eight
one three seven oh five zero six zero. Give them
a call, But first go check out piercescapes dot com.
See the work that they do. Amazing, really amazing. So

(06:31):
I have got some vegetables that I'm repotting up this morning,
and I say after the show that is, I'll know.
I'll probably do it this afternoon. Anyway, I've got to
get them bumped up to the next size. I start
my tomatoes and my peppers and eggplant and things like
that a little bit early indoors because I know I'm

(06:55):
gonna bump them up. I want to get them to
a good size. So when they go in the ground,
is they in mccasion. My tomatoes, They're gonna have ballooms
on them and sometimes they even have a little fruit
on them by the time I get them planted out.
Because I'm moving into bigger pots, I can grow bigger plants.
That's important. Remember what I said about that short window
we have for tomatoes, slicer types especially, and so if

(07:17):
you start your tomatoes and get them up to that
stage when they go in, well you've just shortened the
time to harvest. And that way, if you want to
be a little conservative and wait and not take a
chance on frost, well you're the plant's still growing. It's
like you planted them early. You just did it indoors
under lights. Maybe put them outside where they can get

(07:38):
some sunshine or nice one days, bring them in on
a super chilly night. And before you put these plants
out in the garden, there's something called hardening off. It
is a process where the plant gets used to the outdoors.
It's been living the life of Riley down there in
your your lights or in your house where it's nice

(08:01):
and warm. There's not a cold wind that's whipping it.
There's no cold nights that are you know, blitzing it
and everything else. So in order to make sure your
your plan is better able to withstand that, we gradually
leave them out a little bit longer over a period
of a couple of weeks if you have time for that,
and getting used to the evening times to where they're

(08:23):
just yeah, they're here for daytime and evening. They can
do very well with that. So that's called hardening off.
And that's a process that I do because it is
a shock to go from living just that wonderful indoor
life to having to deal with those cold nights. It's
chili for a tomato when we get them planted, not

(08:44):
much not much time left. Therefore, that folks at Microlife
have created a wonderful selection of fertilizers, some really outstanding things.
Now the sixty four is the lawn fertilizer for Microlife,
that is the green and six four is number one
selling organic fertilizer in Houston. Simple as that. Now, it's

(09:05):
not just six two four nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, it's all
the nutrients. It's over one hundred different minerals. In those
organic granules that you're putting down on your lawn. There
are microbes in those organic granules. I'm talking about billions
and billions of beneficial microbes help your plants grow stronger

(09:26):
and improve the soil. They use yaka as a natural
wetting agent to kind of hold the granules together and
to help it as you as it gets moist, to
dissolve away and release those nutrients into the soil. And
now you can buy it by the jar four pound jar,
or you can buy it by the bag, and whatever

(09:46):
you do, get it, get it so you're ready to
go to put it down on your lawn and also
use it everywhere. Use it in your flower beds, your
vegetable garden. I mean, it's not just a lawn product,
but it is a great product from the folks at Microlife.
Let's take a little break and when we come back,
perhaps we'll be talking to you at seven one three

(10:07):
two one two fifty eight seventy four. Good morning, folks,
see godden. Nice Saturday coming up here. I'm going to
be out at D and D Feed and I hope
you'll come out there and see me from twelfth to two,
twelfth to two today D and DE Feed. Uh, let's talk.
Perhaps you will. We're going to do a drawing for
some nightro us fifteen to five to ten, the Imperial,

(10:31):
the red bag, and also for barricade, the pre emergent
weed control products we're given. Weigh several of those out
there at D and D feed today, So come on
out and see me. I'm gonna have some Texas Gardener
magazines on hand too to put in your hand, as
well as some of my schedules. So hope to see
you out there.

Speaker 5 (10:47):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (10:47):
Cenimals is kind of the go to place for creating
the foundation for success in your gardens. People that are
not let's see educated in four whatever gardeners, you know,
they go to a place that sells plants. They see plants,
they bring them home, They look around and they just

(11:08):
don't know where they're gonna put them. They stick them
in the ground. Unprepared soil. That's a recipe for disappointment.
Get the soil right first, brown stuff before green stuff.
Go to Cenimals and get it. Here's what you do.
Cnimals dot com is a website.

Speaker 6 (11:24):
Go there.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
You can find out everything you need to know, phone
numbers and locations. They're on five twenty one f five
twenty one south of Houston, in the area near where
like Highway six and two eighty eight and all of
that is heading on south now. They will deliver supersacks
for delivery charge or bulk if you want to do that,

(11:46):
or you can come pick it up at the animals.
But while you're there, check out their Viigo beds. They
have them set up outside with stuff growing in them.
Really attractive. They sell those too, by the way. Lots
of other cool things, seeds and tools and whatnot that
they have inside. Quality tools.

Speaker 7 (12:00):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (12:00):
And if you are looking for bags of anything that
enhances the soil, you know the fertilizers. I talk about microlife, Medina, nitrophos,
Nelson's asamite for example, US maybe a blend like the Airloom, Saws,
Veggie and Nerd mix. They carry that at Ciena Mulch
Ciena Maltch dot com. The main thing is go get
out there and get it done. Now it's time to plant.

(12:22):
You want to get that so already. First let's head
to Tomball. This morning, we're going to talk to Mel. Hello, Mel,
welcome to garden Line.

Speaker 8 (12:30):
Hey, now you go to be out here at D
and D this morning, huh l this afternoon.

Speaker 3 (12:36):
Twelve to two. I hope you'll come out and see me.

Speaker 8 (12:39):
Yeah, you're right down the road for me.

Speaker 3 (12:41):
So cool.

Speaker 8 (12:42):
Good. Anyway, all right, I sent you I sent you
a picture, sir on your email.

Speaker 3 (12:48):
Okay, all right, I'll take a look at that and
all right, what's uh, let's talk to me about it.

Speaker 8 (12:55):
Okay. It's I'm assuming that could be a fungus down there,
Am I am I isaiahs or not. It's like a
little puffy white hair. You look in these things, you
see it there.

Speaker 3 (13:07):
On the ground, those little fuzzy yeah, those fuzzy things
that that is exactly what it is. It's a it's
a fungus that is a decomposer fungus that's causing the wood,
the mulch itself to decompose away. Nature has a bazillion
of those things out there and their whole purpose is

(13:27):
just to turn organic matter back into soil. That's what
makes the soil rich. Is some of one of the
things is those decomposer of fungi. Did you fertilize the
surface of that mulch?

Speaker 8 (13:39):
What I did was I put I put down some it. Uh, Kelly,
it's from DNB as the pellet stuff looks like pellets
them and I can't.

Speaker 3 (13:51):
Think of the name of this organic.

Speaker 8 (13:54):
It's again its organic.

Speaker 3 (13:56):
Yeah, microlife, that was my micro life will do that.
It is a it is an enriched organic nutrient. And
because it's organic, it's just like fallen leaves, grass clippings
and other things. My crobes get on it and they
go to town and uh, what's that? What you're seeing
there is just that those granules supporting the growth that

(14:21):
of those, in this case fungal strands growing on. It's
not a plant disease, doesn't hurt anything, and it will
get richer. Sometimes I will when I'm going to use that,
I'll take a little break or something and scratch it
into the malts, just to get it down below the
surface so it stays moist and that way it can
continue to do what it does. But it's nothing to
worry about. That's just nature.

Speaker 8 (14:41):
But now here's here's the thing. Instead of march I've
put I've just put compost on top of it. Is
that a bad thing to do?

Speaker 3 (14:50):
I have a pun.

Speaker 8 (14:51):
Compost is fine, okay, compost well, and I'm seeing it
as a yeah, I use compost at the mult.

Speaker 3 (14:59):
What I'm say though, is yeah, what I'm seeing though,
mel is is pretty pretty chunky. I see a lot
of little wood chippy things in there, So that is
a pretty that's almost. That's more of that's more of
a multi than a compost you. But uh, it's good
either way. Whatever it's going to decompose, it's going to
feed the soil. But nothing to worry about on that.

Speaker 5 (15:22):
All right.

Speaker 8 (15:23):
I put top all over it kind of as a
mulch as it's going to work, all right.

Speaker 3 (15:29):
Absolutely, that's what nature does. And it takes Nature takes
organic matter, drops it on the ground and turns it
into soil, and it's just all part of the cycle
and it's a it's a good thing, nothing to worry about.

Speaker 8 (15:41):
The good I enjoyed talking.

Speaker 3 (15:46):
Yeah, me too. I hope you can make it out
to D and D. But if we do, we'll say hey.
If not, we'll catch you next time. Thanks a lot,
mel I appreciate that call.

Speaker 8 (15:54):
Yeah, all right, all right, all.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
Right, folks seven three two, eight seventy four. If you
want to give me a call, uh knight fast barricade
and I'll be giving this away at D and D
feed for people that win the drawings. Wouldn't do a
drawing for a number of them. Barricade ten pound bagh.
It covers five thousand square feet. You sprinkle it out
on the ground with your spreader, very very low rate,

(16:22):
follow the label and you watered in. Have to water
it in it the product moves onto the soil, ties
up right at the soil surface. It ties up right
there and when a weed tries to sprout, it prevents
it from becoming a weed plant. And it works on
broad leaf weeds, it works on grassy weeds, a wide
variety of weeds, a lot of different species of weeds

(16:44):
are controlled by barricade. It's effective been around a long time.

Speaker 9 (16:47):
You know.

Speaker 3 (16:48):
It's one of those knight Foss products that you're going
to find in places like the Bearings Hardware. There's one
on Bissinet and one on West Timer. You go up northwest,
maybe Hiding and feed on stupentor Airline. You can find
barricade out at the Arborgate, Arbigate and Tumball on twenty
nine to twenty just some of the places that carry
quality night foss products like barricade. You are listening to

(17:11):
garden Line phone number seven one three two one two
five eight seven four seven one three two one two
fifty eight seventy four. I will be at D and
D feed And for those of you who don't know,
D and D Feed is on FM twenty nine twenty
in Tomball. It's three miles west of two forty nine U. Now,
if you want to call them for anything, you know,

(17:31):
checking on do you have.

Speaker 2 (17:32):
This or that?

Speaker 3 (17:33):
In stock two eight one three five one seventy one
forty four. But at D and D you're going to
find all the major fertilizers that I talk about on
guarden Line. You're going to find quality soils from places
like Heirloom Soil. Buy the bag and you're going to
find a good selection of quality pet foods. You're going
to find things to control rodents on the property. You're

(17:54):
going to find things to deal with weeds, insects and
diseases in your gardens and in your life endscapes. It's
a quality place that gives you good hometown service. Has
for a long time D and D feed. So today,
if you'll never been to D and D, come on out,
let's talk. That's twelve o'clock noon to two pm. I'll

(18:18):
be there two hours answering your gardening questions. Look forward
to seeing you there, hope too. Someone was asking me
the other day about a tree problem that they had,
and it was basically what it was was a branch
up in a tree had lost lost its foliage and
clearly had died. And I think what had happened from
what I could see, it was pretty far up there.

(18:39):
I think some squirrels had showed the bark. They liked
to get in the where a branch branches off of
another one and creates that little v angle down in
there as one branches off from another one, and they
like to get in when those branches are smaller and
just chew the bark off and they're sharpening their teeth
and stuff. There's certain times of the year where that's
worse than others. But anyway, I was just telling you

(19:00):
you need you need to call Affordable Tree Service. Affordable
Tree Service. Martin spoon Moore is a guy who Martin's
been a supporter or a gardland for a very very
long time. He's been the preferred UH Tree Service fellow
here on Guardline from back when Randy was doing the show,
and certainly now as well. Here's his phone number seven

(19:20):
one three six nine nine six six'. Three don't let
somebody who drives down the street and owns a pickup
and a chainsaw and knocks on your door and sticks
a card in the door touch your. Trees they may
know a little, bit they may know. Nothing and from
the JOBS i see around, town nothing is pretty. Common
knowing very little is pretty. Common martin knows how to

(19:42):
tree trum a tree the right, way and he knows
how to do, it you, know the right times and.
Everything they do deeper, feeding they do a lot of
other tree services With Affordable Tree the main thing is
just give them a call seven one, three six two
six sixty. Three because once a branch dies like the
ONE i was talking about with the, fellow once a

(20:04):
branch dies back and you start to get exposed, wood
decay begins and with each year that goes, by it
goes further and further down and into the. Tree and
now you got a weak spot that the next storm
can break. Off so a proper pruning job done promptly
in the right way is. Key SO i like to
tell you talk To Affordable Tree service if you are

(20:30):
doing transplanting in your. GARDEN i mean you're we're talking
about putting rose bushes. Out you know that's time for
that for. Sure you're putting flowers and vegetables. Out maybe like,
me you've got some small transplants that you're bumping up
to a bigger size to let them grow out just
a little bit longer before you put them. Outside you
need to get a hold of some Nutri Star genesis From.

(20:53):
Nelson Nutri Star genesis is the first Blend Nelson's maid
that Incorporates macariza bacteria and other fungi to help that sell.
Microbiome And i'm telling you that works AND i want
you to listen to. This listen to me for a
second here that a study was DONE. TEXA.

Speaker 10 (21:10):
A AND.

Speaker 3 (21:10):
M actually a former colleague of, mine out at The
Community College Houston Community college campus on the west. Side
they looked at some sycamore trees and they took some
and Put Nelson genesis around those. Trees they took others
and they took the equivalent in, nutrients the, nitrogen, phosphorus,

(21:32):
potassium and they put it around those. Trees so the
only difference it wasn't a fertilizer. Difference it was the
package that is In, genesis the whole nine, yards the
microize of, bacteria fungi and everything else that's included in.
That and the difference was measurable and significant in trunk

(21:53):
diameter increase and in height of the tree. Increase So
nelson platfood isn't just for a little bump and a
tomato plant up to a gallon or. Something it's for
any plant you. Got AND i would say if you're
moving a plant from a container into your, soil if
you're moving it into a raised, bed if you're bumping
one size pot up to a larger sized, pot always

(22:14):
have genesis on, hand mix it into the, mixture putting it,
in and you will see the. Results AND i guarantee
that Because i've done it. Myself i've seen the results
and this stuff really really works very. Well we're going
to take a break here and have a little time
for the news and. Whatnot when we come. Back if
you would like to be one of the first callers,

(22:35):
up just write this down seven one three two one
two five eight seven four seven one three two one
two fifty eight seventy. Four you can give me a.

In Spring. Branch, Hey, judy welcome To.

Speaker 11 (24:44):
Guardenline, hi thank. You i've got to get after those
grassyweeds this. YEAR i don't want them to come. Back
SHOULD i go ahead and put barricade down? Now and
fertilizer both this week right?

Speaker 3 (25:01):
Away, okay you can let me talk about the fertilizer
just real quick before you. Go if you look at my,
schedule it's late Late february and Two, march about mid
up to about sometime in Mid march for that early spring.
Greenup if you choose to do the spring, greenup you
need to do it pretty soon. Now with where you live,

(25:23):
THERE i would say you could wait a little bit
longer to Maybe, march or you could just go ahead
and do it. Now but it's going to give you
about a month or so of nutrition getting you ready
for the long term. Fertilizing we do in the.

Speaker 1 (25:37):
Summer, Okay.

Speaker 11 (25:42):
WOULD i be using the same fertilizer for both times
at nine? Fourteen?

Speaker 12 (25:50):
No?

Speaker 3 (25:50):
Okay so, Okay so the fertilizer for the fertilizer for
now is The Quick Green up, fertilizer so a product
like Nitrofoss, imperial the red bag fifteen to five. Tens
if you go to my, schedule my schedules are online
at my, website which is. Gardening it's easy to remember

(26:12):
because it's gardening with skip dot, com and you'll see
options for The Quick Green up and then the Slow
releases are another set of options that have the nitrogen
informs that gradually release over. Time and we start doing
that In, april.

Speaker 11 (26:32):
Okay, okay and then barricade will let me no more
grassyweeds next.

Speaker 13 (26:40):
Year.

Speaker 3 (26:43):
No what barricade cade will do is control the weeds
about to, sprout the summer weeds for this. Year. Okay
if you're going to prevent, them you need to do it,
quickly because once they sprout and you got little weeds
in your, yard it's too late for. Bark so it prevents,
them it doesn't kill weeds that are, there so so,

(27:05):
hey you're doing do it again in the fall to
prevent the cool season, weeds.

Speaker 11 (27:10):
Gotcha so BUT i should go ahead and put the
imperial down now and the barricade.

Speaker 3 (27:19):
Now you can do them. Both you can do them
both the same. Day just don't mix them at the same.
Time in your. Spreader spread one and then come back
and load up and spread the other.

Speaker 8 (27:29):

Speaker 3 (27:32):

Speaker 14 (27:51):
Do thank you so.

Speaker 3 (27:54):
Much Thanks, judy appreciate that you have have her not
in garden this. Week bye. Bye all, right let's go
To david And. Laporte Hey, david welcome to Garden.

Speaker 15 (28:06):
Line good, Morning, Skip thank you for taking my.

Speaker 3 (28:10):
Call you, bet thank you call them all?

Speaker 15 (28:14):
Right uh, so, yes, There i've caught a couple of
times about my lawn And i've.

Speaker 16 (28:20):
Been following your schedule clothing schedules for about two years.
Now and uh, Good, yeah it's lean and my weeds
are under control and everything's, great EXCEPT i feel like
my lawn is bending. Out and as far as bending,
OUT i mean like it's not a stick THE i

(28:42):
guess the roots systems not as stick and as it
used to. Be i've heard over the you, KNOW i
listened to you from time to time WHEN i, can and,
Uh i've heard about your you, know top soil and
top dressing and all. That who what would you?

Speaker 15 (28:59):
Recommd And i've heard a lot of. Things some people,
say ye stand, loans some people, say you, know top
soil is a.

Speaker 6 (29:09):
Mixture.

Speaker 15 (29:09):
Good And i've also heard about your, recommendations, right your
companies that you that you recommend to do the. Work
but IF i wanted to do it, myself what would
be the best way to go about? It and what
what what timeline would you give?

Speaker 3 (29:24):
Me all, Right, david there's there's a lot to that,
question actually. Questions Uh, so let me give you the
account of the reader's digest. Version that means the quick,
Answer your long could be thinning for a number of.
Reasons it could be lack of sunlight in areas that
causes a lawn to just lack the energy to get

(29:45):
good and. Thick. Uh there's nothing fertilizer or air rating
that fixes a lack of. Sunlight it's just because it
doesn't have. Sunlight so you got to give it more
sunlight or you gotta put it.

Speaker 12 (29:59):
Go.

Speaker 15 (29:59):
AH i think we can go past that, solution, sir
Because i've only got one, tree a baby. Oak, right
it's a young, oak not a. Problem there's a lot
of sunlight.

Speaker 17 (30:12):
So.

Speaker 3 (30:12):
Here so here's here's what it may. Be it may
be a compacted. Soil and you can rent an. Errator
you want to get one that's a that's a good
quality when kind Of if anyone has what they call
a core, errator try to get. That if they don't
have a core, erator at least just get an. Narrator
run it over your, lawn all over your. Lawn but
first turn on the sprinklers if you have, them and

(30:35):
flag the heads because those erraators will tear up your sprinkler,
heads so make sure you see where they are so
you don't run over. Them and then air rate and
then get you some quality leaf mold compost that you put, down,
uh and put it about a third of an inch
over excuse, me the. Lawn it doesn't take, much just

(30:55):
a little bit over the top and it'll some of
it will fall down in those erration hales and it'll improve.
It and you may have to do that. Now you
may have to do it again in the fall our next.
Spring Even it just depends on how bad the compaction
is and what it. Takes BUT i think the air
rating with compost top dressing and then following the schedule

(31:19):
is the way to. Go, Hey i'm got to have to.
Run i'm up against a hard break, Here. David but
good luck getting that lawn back in. Shape appreciate your
call very. Much. Hey Jungle land from nitrofoss quality product

Speaker 4 (34:16):
This?

Speaker 3 (34:16):
Week moving around some FERTILIZER i have in the in
my storage and getting ready to put some things out and.
Whatnot AND i have a bag of sweet green THAT
i GUESS i had not put it out last. Year
can you use it fertilizer spin around for? You of
course you. Can. Yeah AND i just always think about

(34:37):
this WHEN i pick it. Up you smell, it and
it smells. Good it's almost Like i'm elasses based anyway
that it began, with and so it just has this
wonderful smell about sweet green. Smell and anytime you've got carbon,
chains which is what sugars, are microbes go. NUTS i
mean that is like rocket fuel for. Microbes you put

(34:58):
sweet green down on your launch eleven percent, nitrogen And
i'm telling you it'll dissolve away and it'll fire things
up and you will see green in your. Lawn one
of the highest analysis for any organic product when it
comes to. Nitrogen and it smells good, too the sweet
green from Nitroposs and if you are interested in getting

(35:20):
a hold somewhat's easy to find Night foss. Products you
can find them At Shaney gardens down To Richmond rosenberg
aspose as up in The woodlands plants for all. SEASONS
i was just talking about him on two forty nine
and then The Lake hardware And angleton that's On velasco
in the one include On Dixie. Drive all carry Night
foss products like this sweet green.

Speaker 19 (35:43):
It.

Speaker 3 (35:43):
IS i grew up and we we didn't really care
for our lawn. Much i'm just telling. You my dad
wasn't a lawn. Ranger you, know he Didn't he wasn't into.
That but you, know we mow it and take care
of it in. General but it always just kind of
had this shark truce. Luck just it was, alive but
it wasn't thriving at. All and to take your turf

(36:08):
and really give it the nutrients it needs and the right,
ratios that's WHY i put my schedule, together all the
different products and timing and everything like. That you can
grow one heck of a, lawn but one of the
most important things you're gonna do in your, lawn and
this is important to, hear is return the. Clippings return the.
Clippings you're, Thinking, okay that's going to cause. Thatch no it's,

(36:31):
not and please listen to. This the grass plant has different.
Parts there's the grass blades that you clip off with the.
Mower those are very simple carb type materials that decompose.
Rapidly they hit the ground and microbes just, go thank,
you and just like dropping a lettuce leave on the,

(36:54):
GROUND i mean, gonna it's not going to create a woody, mess,
Right it's going to just. Disappear and that's what clippings.

Speaker 8 (37:01):
Do.

Speaker 3 (37:01):
Now the runners and the nodes where the roots come,
off the runners and the roots, themselves those are slow to,
decompose so when you overfertilize you get a lot of
more runner, growth like the Runners Saint augustine runners like
a little snake crawling through the. Grass they're just all
over the. Place and if you over push, it, yeah
you can create a that's. Problem you sure. Can but

(37:22):
it's not from the. Clippings it's from the excessive. Nitrogen,
now lack of nitrogen leaves your lawn like mine grown,
up share truce and thin and not very impressive at,
all but the right. Amount but those clippings contain the
perfect lawn. Fertilizer so in a clipping is, nitrogen, phosphorus and,

(37:43):
potassium the three numbers on the fertilizer. Bag but in
a clipping is also manganese and zinc and iron and
you know seventeen nutrients plus more that we're part of
making the grass. Grow and so when you clip it
off and drop it on the ground and it, decomposes

(38:06):
those nutrients stay on your. Property and that is very
very important to a good successful. Lawn now that doesn't
mean let it get four inches too tall and chop
it way back and have these giant like a. Hayfield
you got all these dried clippings on the. Surface, no
you get a mulching, mower mow it regularly and mulch

(38:27):
them back. In but return. Them if you don't return
them when you buy a bag of, fertilizer just just
tell yourself on the way, home BECAUSE i bag my
clippings and have somebody haul the clippings from my lawn.
Away i'm just renting this fertilizer THAT i just paid
for Because i'm gonna only have it for a. While
like a rental, place it's not. Yours you're just there
and then you're, gone and you don't have it. Anymore

(38:48):
that's how it is with a. Fertilizer if you don't
return your, Clipping so return your. Clippings it doesn't mean
you never. Fertilize you still. Fertilize But i'm just saying
a huge amount of the nutrition for grass comes from
the grass blades. Themselves think about, This how did The
great meadow grasslands of THE? Usa how did they grow

(39:10):
before someone showed up to mow them and fertilize them
and do all the things we do to. Grass, nature
they return, there they recycle their. Nutrients, now they didn't
have the vigor of your. Lawn they didn't have the
recoverability maybe of a lawn that's been properly. Fertilized they
certainly didn't have that deepest green color that you're looking
for and so. On but nature recycles naturally and you can.

(39:34):
Too don't bag. It that's how you do. It don't
bag it all? Right very. Important, hey if you got
some metal furniture, outside anything metal outside that is starting
to rust or, corrode or just have that dull look
where it's not very impressive. Anymore Houston Powder coders is
who you need to, call and here's how you call
them two eight one six seven six thirty eight eighty.

(39:58):
Eight go to the Website Houston powdercoaters dot. Com you
can see the work they. Do you can find out
how to go about getting an. Estimate what you basically
are going to do is take picture of your furniture
and email it to. Them they'll send you a quote
pretty quick and they if they can come pick it,
up they can do the work and bring it. Back
and there's a lot of. Things you, know maybe a

(40:20):
barbecue pit that is just rusting and not looking very.
Good maybe it's wrot iron cast iron aluminum patio. Furniture
they can coat anything like that. Metal they and over
one hundred different colors to choose, from and it looks
so good when they get, through so. Good Houston powdercoats

(40:40):
Dot com take advantage of that opportunity to turn something.
NEW i still drive around and When i'm going through,
neighborhoods IF i ever see something that's like some metal patio,
furniture this has been set out there because they got
rusty and the bolts are resting out and stuff is,
like oh, BOY i know how to get a brand
new pair bat brand new set of furniture just by

but slender.

Speaker 20 (47:09):
That sid we put down In october worked out perfect.

Speaker 3 (47:13):
Good. GOOD i can.

Speaker 20 (47:17):
Well wondering About, Uh i've heard reference to cornmeal gluten
OR i guess crabgrass control.

Speaker 3 (47:28):
And, yes address, up yes and, no and the answers
yes and.

Speaker 21 (47:36):
No.

Speaker 3 (47:37):
Uh here here's the thing on on corn gluten. Meal.
Uh and it's on my schedule, too by the. Way
uh IF i put it on there because we don't
have a good organic pre, emergent but corn milk corn
gluten meal can prevent the successful establishment of weed, seeds
but various species various levels of. Control crabgrass is one

(48:01):
it can, control but the conditions have to be. Right
you need a little moisture to cause the weed seed
to germinate after you put the corn gluten meal. Down
but then you need it to stay a little dry
because what it does is it prevents the. Weed it
sort of like freezes the weed seed in, place if you.
Will and if time goes on and it stays, moist

(48:24):
it won't die because it stays, moist and it'll recover
because the corn gluten meal breaks. Down but if it
dries out a little bit after, that the corn gluten
mill will have done its job for long enough to
kill the weed.

Speaker 8 (48:35):
Seed, okay SO.

Speaker 3 (48:39):
I recommend using.

Speaker 20 (48:40):
It how does cotton bird compost compared to leaf mold?

Speaker 3 (48:46):
Compost just different. Ingredients they're both organic materials that have
been decomposed and so they're going to have somewhat similar nutrient.
Contents but you, know it's it's fine if you can
get a hold of. It, Yeah, OKAY i just need

(49:06):
to screen screened down to a small size all, right,
sir thanks for the, yeah appreciate. IT i found out.
THERE i found out there in Sane. Leone. Yep you
can go to my website and look at my lawn
care schedule and my lawn pest disease and weed, schedules
WHICH i will have with me today AT d AND

(49:28):
D feed from twelve to two When i'm, there so
you can come pick up a free copy if you.
WANT i already printed, out two sided and ready to.
Go but Corng glut mills on, there AND i JUST
i think WHAT i say about it on there is
that it's it's kind OF i put it not not
dependable OR i can't remember HOW i put it like,

(49:49):
that inconsistent, results THAT'S i think that's WHAT i said about. It,
Anyway so, yes it can, work but you've got to
be determined to and and nature has to cooperate by
holding off the rain after you put it down for
just a little. Bit you're listening to Garden line phone
number seven one three two one two fifty eight seventy.
Four let's. Talk what do you want to talk? About?

(50:12):
People this time of, year it's in to get out and. Fertilize,
well if you look at the. Schedule there is a
early green up that you can put out if you
want to get a quick, green a little deeper green
earlier on on your. Lawn and a product that works
well for that Is Nitroposs. Imperial that is the fifteen
five ten, listen fifteen five to ten three one two

(50:34):
ratio of. Nutrients that's what grass wants period now three
one two are four one two either one is. Fine
uh years ago At TEXAS a AND m and a
lot of other universities turf specialists throughout The, south you KNOW,
Lsu Mississippi, State, Auburn university Of, Florida Oklahoma, state all

(50:54):
all through this. Region they they did testing on what
does grass need in terms of a nutrient and that's
what they came up. With And nitrofoss is designed with
that in, mind same, formula same red orange bag that

weed which seems to be more of like a. Groundcover

(55:49):
have you heard of?

Speaker 3 (55:50):
That, yes, huh antelope port is a type of. Milkweed
but EYVON i got to CLARIFY i was talking about
enchanted forest in. That i've got two great garden centers
down there In Chanda gardens and. Forth this was forest
THAT i was talking.

Speaker 22 (56:04):
About oh, okay well, Good i'm glad you clarified That
i'm writing that. Down, Okay, so, anyway do you have
experience with, that BECAUSE i was reading it says it
takes a few years to actually attract the butterflies or
to bloom or.

Speaker 13 (56:20):
SOMETHING i.

Speaker 3 (56:23):
Have i'm experienced with it in terms of seeing it
grow through the seasons and. Things i've never tried planting
it that specific milk weed, myself but it's got this
large round ball of flowers up on. Top it's just
like a little tennis ball of flowers up on really.
Cool the antelope porn and it does really well.

Speaker 22 (56:46):
Here, okay Well i'm going to try that this. Year
and then talking about this butterfly garden, AGAIN i wanted
to PUT i was thinking of a formosa azalea in,
there just for. Protection will that do well in full?

Speaker 3 (57:00):
Sun it prefers to be in a little break from
the hot afternoon sun the. As but you see azaleas
in different, conditions but generally we don't stick them out
in the brunt of the full. Sun they just struggle
in the intense heat.

Speaker 22 (57:17):
Of, summer, Right, okay THAT i was second guessing myself.

Speaker 11 (57:22):
There.

Speaker 22 (57:23):
Okay AND i have a few plum areas that a
friend gave. Me two of them are like thirty years,
old and they're super tall and they grow every year
and so they're too large for. Pots of what we
do is we take them, Out we put them in
the garage through the winter, months and then plant them.

(57:44):
Again they were never like proved pretty so do you
have any, suggestions, LIKE i don't have like a tall
center trunk and then it branches. Out it's they're kind
of you know, how they very.

Speaker 8 (58:00):
Easily SO i think that's what.

Speaker 3 (58:02):
Happened tell, me tell me the name of the plant
that you're talking about.

Speaker 22 (58:07):
Now there was in the, garage the plume areas.

Speaker 3 (58:12):
Plume. Aria, okay, yeah.

Speaker 6 (58:14):
Uh you know the.

Speaker 3 (58:17):
Pruning them is is not that. Difficult, generally they're not
pruned a, lot you, know because they do make those
thick stalks and stick and thick side branching and. Stuff
but you can cut them off at some place and
they will they will sprout out and grow out some side.
Shoots if you want to go through. That it's just
kind of up to you as, too because they've got

(58:38):
quite tall on their. Own, yeah But i'm gonna have
to run, Though. Ivan so did that answer that for?

Speaker 12 (58:46):
You that?

Speaker 23 (58:48):
DID i had two other.

Speaker 22 (58:49):
QUESTIONS i don't know if you can come back or.

Speaker 3 (58:52):
Not, well, uh hang on just a little, bit and
if if you, don't don't get another call in, Here
i'll come in just a. Second just hang on for a. Second.
Yeah when it comes to organic plant, Food nitrofoss has
done their homework creating a product called Sweet green that
is basically from a molassis type. Base microbes act on

(59:15):
that and they turn it into a nitrogen. Fertilizer it's
eleven zero zero, basically he's about eleven percent, nitrogen very
little of other things in. There but it gives that
green up and it does a good. Job you put
it down first of, all smells. GOOD i jokingly say
that when you put it back a Sweet green in the,
car you're going to want to make another looper on

(59:36):
six' ten on the, way home just to enjoy. The
fragrance that's. A lot but put, it down water it
in see. The results you're gonna Find night. Foss products
it places like plants and Things in Brenham on highway three,
SIXTY Five dnd Feed and tomball where all be today
at noon Carries night foss products noon to. Two Today

(59:56):
Ace hardware city a memorial drive out In The Memorial.
Areaingham Creek ace HARDWARE on fm five, twenty nine Backside
of Copperfield and enchanted for us we were just talking
ABOUT on fm twenty seven. Fifty nine another good good.
Thing there i'm going to come, Back. Here yvonne let's
take one more question before, We GO and i do

(01:00:16):
want to remind, you though that if you're interested in the,
butterfly garden go Out To. Enchanted forest they have huge
selection of things that attract every kind. Of butterfly. You
know they got the things that attract monarchs and go fritillaries,
and swallowtails and a lot of their plants even come
with larva. On them so it's like you like getting

(01:00:37):
a sour, dough starter you take home your butterfly garden
starter in the form of a caterpillar on. THAT plant.

Speaker 22 (01:00:43):
I will i haven't been. There before i've been to
all the other, places Locally but i'm going to make.

Speaker 23 (01:00:50):
A trip, thank you, all right.

Speaker 22 (01:00:55):
My mondo GRESS that i have in the yard. IS
groundcover i didn't on, My wawn i'd put the pre.
Emerging IN can i put a pre emerging, in that
BECAUSE now i have tons.

Speaker 14 (01:01:06):
Of weeds.

Speaker 3 (01:01:08):
It won't hurt it, At all but it only stops
the weeds coming. From seed so if it's weeds that,
are perennial like if if bermuda grass got, in there
barricade wouldn't, stop it but it'll stop things coming.

Speaker 22 (01:01:20):
From, seed okay, very good and then the. Box Would
so i've replaced a few that have died from. LAST
year i took out, THE soil i put in everything
that you, were saying and they. Died, again okay what ANY.

Speaker 3 (01:01:39):
Other i can't tell.

Speaker 24 (01:01:40):
YOU what.

Speaker 3 (01:01:42):
I can't tell you what that it was without seeing
samples and stuff. Of them are they? Completely? Dead yes
or are they? Just, dying, OKAY well i. Don't know
it could have been a number. Of things they're so
a fungi that can, do it there's a lack of
water can.

Speaker 25 (01:01:58):
DO it.

Speaker 3 (01:02:00):
I just can't. Tell you just the fact that IT
died i didn't enough for me to.

Speaker 7 (01:02:04):
Go, on okay, all right, very good, thank you.

Speaker 3 (01:04:17):
I do someone asked me the, other, day well how
do you know a good growing mix for A container
and what about when my container soils are. Sinking down
HOW do I do i have to throw that soil
away OR can i? Reuse, it listen if a plant
didn't die of some kind of root ride in, a
container you can reuse. The soil nature reuses. The soil

(01:04:37):
nobody cleans out the soil in nature and puts fresh
soil in jungle land. From night foss is an excellent soil,
for that whether you're filling up a pot for the
first time or taking one that's sunken down and refreshing
it and getting it in good. Shape again the content of,
jungle land the microbial levels of jungle land in the soil.

(01:04:58):
Are outstanding in, your place. It'll thrive they have one
with water saving crystals at. Whole water so when, you
forget not that, you do but when we forget we
do forget to water, our plants those crystals whole moisture a,
little longer and it helped the plant to hold on
until we remember to go back in there and do.
Watering again jungle and products from nitrophos availabment places like in.

(01:05:22):
CHINNING forests i was just talking about them Done In
Richmond rosenberg bearings Hardware on bissonette And On west Timer
both carrie, nitroposs products As does Hiden and Feed On.
Stubner airline we're going to take a break now for
the half, hour, news uh and we'll be right back
with your calls at seven one three two one two

(01:05:46):

Ktr h, all right don't, Go away we'll be.

Speaker 8 (01:05:53):
Right, back.

Speaker 3 (01:05:55):
Hey welcome back to The. Guarden line you can talk.
About today you have to tell me it's a call
in show seven to one three two one two five
eight seven four seven one three two one two fifty eight.
Seventy four it is the perfect storm in. Our lines
we have winter weeds that are growing like crazy and go,

(01:06:17):
into seed and you got to shut. Those down we
also have summer weeds that are beginning, to sprout and
you are its best to prevent a weed seed from
establishing a weed plant as composed. To killing as opposed
to killing a weed plant that's, already growing and barricade
from night fuss prevents a weed seed from establishing. A

(01:06:39):
plant the weed seed tries to sprout because it's warm and,
it's moist and, it, thinks oh here, we go and when,
it does it sends a, root out and the barricade,
says no you can't put, roots down and so you're
just gonna dry up and die and never make. A
plant and that's how. It works but you gotta get
it down according to. The label always when using any, product,

(01:07:00):
insects diseases, or weeds follow. The label don't. DOUBLE up
i know if it, depends good a tablespoon must. Be
better it.

Speaker 12 (01:07:08):
Is not.

Speaker 3 (01:07:10):
The label. Is better follow the label always you put your.
Barricade down what does the label say? Watered in if
you don't water, it in the granules have the ingredient
and the. Soil doesn't you gotta watered in so that
ingredient washes into the surface of the soil where it
ties up and does. Its work one ten pound bag
covers five thousand. Square feet now you can find nitro

(01:07:32):
frost products in places Like the Arbigate, AND tomball D
and d Feed and Tamba where i'm going to, be
today by, the way for, That matter hiding and Feed
On stubener airline, carries them as do the two bearing
hardware so One On missing out and the run One On.
West timer many places run down carry those night. Frost
products let's go out to the phones now and we're

(01:07:53):
going to Talk. To, Randy, Well, hello randy welcome To. Garden,
MINE Hi, i hew are you? Doing well? Thank YOU.

Speaker 7 (01:08:03):
So i have a butterfly GARDEN and i have knockout roses,
in IT and i have bermuda grass growing in underneath the.
Knockout roses i've tried pulling, it out but it just
doesn't seem to get rid. Of it is there any
kind of HERBICIDE that i could use that would kill
the bermuda grass but not affect? The roses.

Speaker 3 (01:08:25):
There Is first i'm going to tell you on my
website what will answer. That question i'll tell you, the
products but sometimes you know you heard them and then
later you're trying to remember what, he said kind. Of
thing but if you go to My website Gardening with skip,
dot com there is a Publication called Herbicides For Skips,
weed wiper and it takes each type, of, weed grassyweeds broad,

(01:08:50):
leaf weeds, woody weeds, wild onions and sedges like, nut
said and it tells you the ingredients to look for
and the products that contain. Those ingredients and if you look,
at that what you'll see is. For grassyweeds there are.
Two ingredients one is flu as a folk and the
other one is cetoxidem and it's just think of flu

(01:09:10):
as f L U a z and seth the. Boy's
name those are the two ingredients and. They come each
one has its, own products but it'll say things like,
grass getter, grass beater grass, be gone. Grass killer and
sometimes they don't. Say grass but if it, says grass
it's a grass only you can read the label so

(01:09:31):
you can spray it and grass in your petunias or
grass in the plants you were, talking about and it only. Kills, grass,
Okay fantastic, Thank you yeah, you bet. Thank You randy
gardening with skip. Dot com that's what you need to
look for and it will take you right to it.
For sure let's go to gym now and. Clear, Like,

(01:09:53):
hey jim Welcome. To gardland.

Speaker 13 (01:09:55):
Morning morning i'm curious how fast creeping time would take
over a fairly sparse. Front lawn it's a. Northwest facing.

Speaker 3 (01:10:09):
It's, very no it's, Very. Slow jim creeping time a
wonderful plant stays down low to, the ground but it's
slow And IT what i have found is you tend
to have sometimes a little section will die out a
little bit if it stays a little, too soggy wet,
or something and so you don't have that nice. Ground

(01:10:30):
cover or are you just wanting a groundcover instead of
a lawn or what are?

Speaker 13 (01:10:36):
Your goals a long groundcover instead of.

Speaker 6 (01:10:39):
A lawn.

Speaker 13 (01:10:41):
It's not much of a lawn Because, it's.

Speaker 3 (01:10:47):
Yeah is this a large area or what are we?
LOOKING at a.

Speaker 13 (01:10:52):
Relatively large it would be about twenty by fifty with
a sidewalk on through the center.

Speaker 26 (01:10:59):
Of.

Speaker 3 (01:10:59):
It, Yeah uh and tell me about the amount of sun.
And shade.

Speaker 13 (01:11:07):
It gets a great amount of sun and now very.
Little stage i've got a couple of trees that we're
planning now that will start. Shading it but it is
northwest facing.

Speaker 3 (01:11:19):
Mhm, okay well a lot of People use. Asian jasmine
it typically is done in a little more shade than,
full sun but it can grow in. Full Sun so
asian jasmine would be an option that. Does. Cover uh
there is a native plant and you need to go
online and look it up to see if you like
the look.

Speaker 25 (01:11:39):
Of it but.

Speaker 3 (01:11:40):
It is it's called frog fruit. And uh it is,
native uh and it covers. Pretty well it's a weed in. Our,
area now that makes it sound like it's a. Bad plant.
It's not it grows very low to. The ground it
has little tiny matchstick looking bloomstalks that are very low
to the ground and have little tiny white flowers that

(01:12:02):
attract some butterflies and bees and things. Like that but it,
does vine and it covers and it stays low and
native enthusiasts love it as. A groundcover it makes a really.
Good one i'm sure you could buy it at a
Place Like buchanan's plants And the heights and any places.
To carry some native plants would, have it so that

(01:12:22):
would be. An option there's just a lot of plants,
out there and, every plant Like, people jim have their pros.
And cons so, you know one of them may like
there are SOME that i like a lot as, a
groundcover but they just grow too fast and, you're constantly,
you know edging the sides of it because it's trying
to take over the flower beds and. Other things others

(01:12:45):
are clumpers and they don't spread. Fast ENOUGH but i
think you're going to need something vining. In there if
you will. Hang ON when i, hang up my producer
will give you, an email give you, my email and
if you'll send me a request for my information, On
groundcovers i'll send you a LITTLE article i wrote that

(01:13:08):
gives you a lot of options and you can decide
if one night suit you BETTER.

Speaker 6 (01:13:13):
Than i thank you.

Speaker 3 (01:13:15):
Very, Much, okay jim thanks. For colling good luck out
there in Clear, Like. Clearlake texas let's see. Microlife fertilizers,
you know they have so many, different forms, the GRANULES
what i usually, talk about the six, to four the,
green bag. The law what we think of is, lawn
fertilizer but there, are many many other. Good options there

(01:13:40):
are a lot of great microlife fertilizers that come as
liquids as well as well as products that are basically
just microbial packed stimulations from the Folks. At microlife so
if you're looking for something that contains let's say a

(01:14:01):
maybe a lot of fungi or bacteria or other things
that are going to fight a disease of, a plant
well go ahead And try microlife because when you go
to microliffertilizer, dot com you're going to find all of.
These Products and i'm telling. You microlife it's name microlife
because they're chalk full. Of them but here's a PRODUCT

(01:14:23):
that i think we need to talk about more and
That Is Microlife. Maximum blooms it's a three eight. Three
fertilizer so it's a high. Phosphorus load you could drench
in any plant that you're watering. With it because of
that high, phosphorus load it's got humic and fulvic acid
to natural. Nature occurring, that is acids that help stimulate

(01:14:46):
and build the, soil structure helps stimulate. Microbial activity they
do a lot of things in. The Soil Microlife maximum
blooms is kind of a reddish, pink label comes in
a quart and comes in a gallon three. EIGHT three
i would recommend you look. For that that is a
very good one because we are in planting season and

(01:15:06):
you want to have some of that. On hand let's
take a little break, right now and we're going to
come right back with your calls for our last segment of,
the hour we'll be right. Back there we go go
about the. Guard, line hey you got a, gardening question
let's talk. About it it, is spring and, in spring everybody's.

(01:15:27):
A gardener at least THAT'S how i like to look.
At it there is something about gardening in. The spring
that it's just like a fountain. Of hope. It is
it's a fountain. Of HOPE when i go to a
garden center and see, a plant maybe it's a, tomato
plant maybe it is a, PETUNIA plant i look at

(01:15:49):
it AND what i see is. LUSCIOUS tomatoes i can taste, those,
fine ripe. SUNWARM tomatoes i just can, taste them and
they it's just a, little plant don't even have a balloom,
On IT but i can taste. THE tomatoes i just
can imagine. The harvest i'm going to be. Drying tomatoes
i'm Gonna put hines And del Monty catch up out

(01:16:10):
of business with so many TOMATOES that i make. Sauce
with i'm just telling you. It's hope and the same thing,
that petunia, the flowers, the beauty uh. Just dry driving
up to, THE house i just can see what that
flower bed is gonna. Look like that. Is hope that.
Is optimism that's what. Gardeners. Do gardeners gardeners, THEY well

(01:16:33):
i think gardeners have a perspective that would do everybody
a little bit. Of good i've GOT a t shirt,
that says but where? Are gardeners they remember what patience
feels like in an age that worships speed. And schedules
when you go out in, the garden you have time.
To think when you go out in, the garden you

(01:16:54):
have time. To rest you. Get refilled that, is gardening that.
Is spring are you EXCITED as? I am. I hope
so it's a. Cool thing, you know, This morning i've
been telling you about all these products from different companies
that are just, outstanding products, you know fertilizers and. Other
things and do you know there's one place where you can,
get everything all. Of It It's. Southwest fertilizer it's Corner

(01:17:18):
of Businet, And Runwick, Southwest Houston night, Fuss fertilizers Nilsen's,
turf Star other, neilson products as well, microlife products Products.
From medina they have their own line, Of Fertilizers southwest
fertilizer and every, type, liquids granules they've. Got them do

(01:17:42):
you need to? Prevent weeds You know i've mentioned barricade.
This morning they carry that and many, other things even
things to kill existing weeds that you would put out
the city's largest selection of herbicides and secticides, and fungicides
and the largest selection and hear This of oregon products

(01:18:02):
in The greater houston. Area period you need a, new
tool we got a ninety foot wall of quality tools
to walk down and pick out the one. You want
you want that, kneeling seat garden kneeling BENCH that i keep,
Talking about they've got. It there do you want to
build your own weed WIPER like i talk about here
on guarden line to make it easy to get weeds
and minimize your application. Of herbicide they've got, the product

(01:18:24):
the tool you, start with right There At. Southwest fertilizer
they have a shop in the back with, long equipment sales,
and service blade sharpening and. So on it's all There At,
southwest fertilizer Corner of Bisonett and Runwick In. Southwest Houston
southwest Fertilizer. Dot com here's a phone number you'll. Need this.
Call them you can ask them do you have such

(01:18:44):
and such? In sock the interest can, be yes seven
one three six six six one seven four four seven
one three six sixty six one seven. Four four let's
go now Out to neederland AND if i can find the,
right button we're going to Talk to randy. This, Morning,
Hey randy welcome To. Garden line how are you?

Speaker 27 (01:19:04):
This morning?

Speaker 3 (01:19:07):
Doing well, thank you.

Speaker 27 (01:19:09):
Good skiff i've got a question. About strawberries i've never raised.
Them before i've got a. FEW plants i put. Them
out they've been in the ground since about the Middle,
of december.

Speaker 14 (01:19:22):
And the plant's a.

Speaker 16 (01:19:23):
Beautiful green.

Speaker 27 (01:19:24):
They're blooming as soon as it starts to put on,
a strawberry. It turns the strawberry right in the center
of the bloom. Turns, brown.

Speaker 3 (01:19:36):
Okay are the petals still on the bloom or have
the petals fallen off at that point.

Speaker 27 (01:19:44):
They are still on or do?

Speaker 3 (01:19:46):
You, remember okay that is a that is a. Pollination issue,
strawberry petals. Excuse me strawberry blooms are very, col sensitive
and if you get a, little frosty it'll burn the
blooms and they turn black brown in the center and they.
Fall off something is affecting them. Like that it's not

(01:20:06):
an insect and it's not a disease based on what.
You're DESCRIBING so i don't know if it's cold or
a cold snap that, happened before but it shouldn't just
keep happening when we're not having frosts. Or, FREEZES.

Speaker 27 (01:20:24):
Okay i know you think it's kind of, straight, NOW.

Speaker 3 (01:20:29):
Yes i think. It, will yeah we have a warm
climate and strawberries they they're kind of a they're, cold
tolerant they're. Not freeze the plants are. Freeze tolerant the
blooms are not at all. Freeze tolerant but they start
blooming a little early. On us. BUT continue i would
give it small doses of, nitrogen fertilizer keep, it boosted keep,

(01:20:50):
it growing because the more, it develops the better your
harvest is going to be on. Those strawberries so small does,
nitrogen fertilizer make sure it, keeps watered and then get
ready to make your strawberry shortcake for too.

Speaker 1 (01:21:05):
Long here, Appreciate, it skip, thank you, you bet, Thank.

Speaker 3 (01:21:11):
You rendy. APPRECIATE that i used to have a strawberry
patch Up, In, willis texas a commercial half acre. Of,
strawberries now if you're looking at, you Know like california strawberries,
worth huge huge acreages. Of, strawberry yeah. Not that but
if you're looking at doing it at my hand and
taking care, of it a half acre is a lot,
of work a lot, of work but it was sure fun.

(01:21:34):
TO do i tried a lot of new varieties and
that Was.

Speaker 25 (01:21:38):
In.

Speaker 3 (01:21:39):
Joeble again it was, time consuming but a lot. Of
fun strawberries are not that hard to. Grow here traditionally
we had a there was a time when Not, in
pasadena the area that Part, of houston there was a
significant little. Strawberry planning now you can go South of
houston and there's strawberry plannings that are commercial down. There

(01:22:00):
well and the bottom line is you can, grow them
or if you don't want to, grow them, you can,
you know you can go somewhere and pick them yourself
to a. You pick but, IN fact i think when
we come back next hour and we'll talk about that
just a. Little bit but strawberries are not. That difficult

(01:22:23):
you do have to deal with some diseases and there
are some insects that you have to, deal with but
if you're willing to, do that you can have a
nice little. STRAWBERRY patch i like to plant mine in.
The fall that is the best time to. Plant strawberries
it is not easy always to find strawberries in. The
fall find. STRAWBERRY plants a lot of people mail order

(01:22:45):
them in. And whatnot like a commercial field they're bringing
in little. Tiny plants there's different ways they. Do it
sometimes it's ones that have been grown and dug when
it's very cold up North like canada or SOMEPLACE. Northern
us they'll dig plants after the first frost and, sell
them or not after first hard freezes and sell them

(01:23:07):
and you can put them in. The ground that delays
a little more than we like. To delay so there
are the ways that. They're grown but bottom line is
fall planning is. The best it gives you a lot.
Of time so in the winter when it's going to
get like we got almost a twenty degree someplace has
got twenty degrees and that freeze, We, had yeah you'd
want to cover your strawberries for best results. On THAT

(01:23:27):
but i HAVE when i grew them commercially in the
winter time maybe, you Know, late January, early february not
blooms on those, Little boogers and those blooms are not
going to make it if you don't, protect them. For
sure oh but nothing is like, fresh, strawberries nothing nothing.

Speaker 25 (01:23:44):
At.

Speaker 3 (01:23:44):
All, all right let's, see here what are we. Looking
at we've got a little bit of time here before
we go to our top of, the hour, NEWS again
i WANT to i want to, mention, that well we're
thinking about things to do out in, the garden in.
The lawn this is like we're entering into prime time for.

(01:24:04):
Lawn care i've already talked about the need to. Prevent
weeds now if you're going to do it pro, emergence now,
don't wait it's. Too late the importance of controlling existing
weeds before they go. To seed, now now now some
of them already have seeds. ON them i have a
few weeds scattered in, the LAWN so i just. Do
handpulling but when, the lawn so when the soul, is

(01:24:26):
moist just get a kneeling bench. Out there makes it
so easy to do it with a. Kneeling. Bench UH
and i just hand pull them and get. Them done
but those seeds don't need to go back in, your
ground because you're gonna have to take care. Of those
but this is a time where when, you mow your
first mowing can be. Done lower so if you have weeds,
with seeds mow, down lower set it, very, low uh

(01:24:49):
and bag it and get those weed seeds and weeds out.
Of there that is the not the first choice of,
doing it but it Is the it is an important
step to prevent those. Weed seats so don't be afraid
to bag that. First one don't be afraid to set.
It low people talk about scalping. THE lawn i don't
like that name because it sounds like you're mowing it.

(01:25:11):
Too low to me to, say scalp but you're going
to set it a little lower. Than normal and all
those brown grass, blades say, and obvious he normally has
some green, in it, you know even in the wintertime
a little bit depending on what area you're. Listening in,
but boy that cold we had turned everything brown in.

(01:25:33):
My LAWN but i just did a mowing the other
DAY and i was just trying to get it cleaned
up and a bunch of debris out. Of THERE and
i set it down lower and caught it in. A
BAGGER and i was a lot to catch in. A
bagger i didn't mow, very FAR and i dumped it
wheelbarrow and mowed a little further and dumped It. In
wilboro and then the wheelbarrow goes to my garden and
it's in my. VEGETABLE garden i have walkways that, are

(01:25:55):
mulched and it just goes down the walkways and. Decomposes
there you can take it to. Accomplished pile but remember
that's all for your. Organic, matter now if it's got
weed seeds, in it. That's different but if you want
to do a low mode to, begin with. Go ahead
as things, warm up we're gonna set that more back
to a. Normal hype.

Speaker 1 (01:26:16):
Welcome to KT r h garden line With. Scamp rictor it's.

Speaker 4 (01:26:22):
Crazy gas baby can use shrim just watching as.

Speaker 2 (01:26:30):
Wol gas there are so many good things to seepbot
basic bread gas by not a sign gas gas and

(01:26:51):
the sun beaming down between.

Speaker 12 (01:26:55):

Speaker 2 (01:26:56):
Gas stop.

Speaker 3 (01:27:07):
So cool, all right, sun, Morning gardeners, good morning and what,
a day what a spring day we've. Got today i'm
going to BE at D and d, feed today by,
the way from twelve. To two come on and see
me if you if you've never BEEN to D, and

(01:27:27):
d need to come see. The place it's a, great
place a great. Feed store it is West to tumbull
on twenty nine, to twenty just a little bit outside
of town on the left. Twenty nine i'll be giving
away some Products from Nicafoss there imperialed the red bag
that is for Early green up fifteen five to ten,
immediate release and also the barricade and boys that. Ever

(01:27:48):
timely now, for barricade the gotta get that down before
the weed seeds start, to sprout and get it down in.
The ground we'll have some of those as well to
be given away for. A drawing i'll be giving away
some Copies Of texas gardener magazine while, supplies LAST and
i have plenty of. My schedules both of, the schedules
you just take a free pre, printed page nice and

(01:28:11):
slick and hang it on the refrigerator or in. The
garage so anytime you need to KNOW what i need
to do to my lawn, right now it tells you
right there on. The schedule if you have a, gardening
question feel free to give me. A call seven one
three two one two five eight SEVEN Four. Rcw NURSERIES
when i THINK, OF rcw i just think of a
great independent, garden center, knowledgeable staff, good selection and RIGHT

(01:28:36):
now i can't get roses out of. MY head I.
Mean rcw nobody brings in the variety. Of roses the
SELECTION that rcw does just pages and pages of. Rose
options but everybody knows that that's a real gardener or
rose enthusiast here in. The area people know that and
they head out there and they. Get them so every

(01:28:58):
day you wait is a day that another rose may
no longer, be available may have been, cleaned out because
they do head there to clean. THEM Out rcw nurseries,
Dot Com tomball parkway in belt. Wag eight you just
need to get out there and. Do that while you're,
out there it's still good time to plant all kinds of.
Woody ornamentals, you know they grow a lot of their
own trees At Their Williamson tree farm up There, in

(01:29:20):
plannersville and so you have. Top quality if you need
them to come out, and plant that can be arranged.
As well but the main thing is just get over
there now and. Don't delay it is time and you're
gonna find a lot of good products as well to
go along with whatever. You're purchasing. Out there we're gonna
head now to let's see. Tomorrow tomorrow welcome to. Garden

(01:29:47):
mine where are you? Calling from.

Speaker 5 (01:29:50):
About five Months? From, hollatsville.

Speaker 3 (01:29:54):
Okay all right Out in lvoka, can? Yes sir? All
right how can we? Help today.

Speaker 5 (01:30:07):
You got a problem. With sandburs what's the best way
to get rid.

Speaker 8 (01:30:11):
Of, them.

Speaker 3 (01:30:14):
Well once you, have them they're harder to get rid
of because they're a. Grassy weed and so if they're
growing in grass and you kill, the weed you kill,
the grass and so that's not a. Good option but
you can. Prevent them they're going to be, germinating soon
and you want to get you a preventative. Product out
barricade pre emergent is one good option. For that there

(01:30:35):
are other pre emergent options out there on, the market
but generally for lawns, and things we're talking, about barricade
and you have to get it down ahead of. Them
germinating they'll be germinating as the temperature is. Getting up
of the soil temperature that is up in the upper
fifties somewhere, in there you're going to start seeing germination
of the. Grass, birds.

Speaker 5 (01:30:57):
OKAY where i, find, that.

Speaker 3 (01:31:02):
Uh well out in. YOUR area i don't know all
the stores and things. OUT there, I, know uh HERE
are ace hardware stores around town. Cover it uh you
just have to kind of ask around where you can
you can buy it out in. Your area.

Speaker 6 (01:31:19):
Let me.

Speaker 3 (01:31:19):
Think here, you know if you're do you come Into
the houston area very, OFTEN.

Speaker 5 (01:31:24):
Yeah i go through there, pretty, often, yes sir.

Speaker 3 (01:31:27):
Mm. Hmmm yeah so as you, come in you, first,
thing uh as far as the garden centers AND things i,
work With The Nelson water gardens Is. In katie you
just turned North on Katie For. Ben, Road Uh Nelson
water gardens will we'll probably carry, that barricade pretty sure. They,

(01:31:48):
Do uh AND so, I would i would check.

Speaker 26 (01:31:50):
With.

Speaker 3 (01:31:50):
Them uh and then You Got ace hardware stores There
in katie that aren't very far from. My ten if
you Go To Ace hardware texas. Dot Com Ace hardware texas. Dot,
com uh and then look at the map and you
can see some stores that are out. Your, DIRECTION.

Speaker 8 (01:32:06):
Okay i.

Speaker 3 (01:32:07):
Appreciate it. You bet good luck with those. Grass birds
they aren't, any fun? Are, they no.

Speaker 5 (01:32:15):
They're, NOT.

Speaker 3 (01:32:18):
Yeah i grew up with those. Darn things by, the
way they like it when the soil is kind of
poor and even a little on the. Droughty side they
they they. Like that so you might, want to, you
know anything you do as, you're fertilizing as you're, you
know doing some good watering to support your grass growth.

(01:32:40):
And stuff all of those things help give the grass
a little bit of, an edge and as the lung,
gets denser the ability of a grass bird a sprout
and get enough light to establish a plant. Goes down
so those are some. Cultural tips yet he lessen. THE
problem i.

Speaker 5 (01:32:58):
Got some sandy salt them on top of. A heel
so it's it's pretty bad there.

Speaker 3 (01:33:04):
You Go that's. Graspburg heaven oh, they love they love
drowty sands and stuff. Like that, all, right now? How
many how many were talking about? A yard tomorrow we're
talking about. A pasture i got.

Speaker 5 (01:33:21):
A yard it's probably a half, acre yard and, THEN
uh i got ten acres.

Speaker 7 (01:33:26):
Around IT.

Speaker 3 (01:33:28):
But i DON'T think, i, Can, right yeah if you're
dealing with, a pasture that will be a different kind
of ag product that you would. Use about but, uh yeah, All,
right well the main thing is. Don't delay your best
shot at them is to get that. Done early if
you will, hang, on uh my producer will give you

(01:33:50):
my email and tell me we talked on the phone
and You want graspper. Control information i'll send you a
sheet that gives you a little. More information, all, right
sir and good. Appreciate it thank you for, The call

(01:34:11):
Plants uh they've got two different versions of The jungle

an indoor. Type mix The jungle land water saver. Potting
soil those crystals hold onto the water and when you forget,
the water they hold on a little extra water so
the plant can hold on a little while while you

(01:34:31):
and me get around to remember into water. Our plant
and that makes jungle land a nice, let's say it
makes it a little bit more, forgiving soil if, you
will when things get a. Little tough but you can
find night fast Products at Hiding and Feed on. Stupnir
Airline the arbigate carries night, fast products As Does Bearing
Hot bearings Hardware and bissinet And on West tim or

(01:36:32):
hey steven welcome To. Garden, line well.

Speaker 28 (01:36:35):
Thank thanks you have to take. MY call i had
a road built on my Property On, colorado River and
i'm probably about a quarter mile from. The river and
the guy went in and dug me, some DITCHES and
i know it's a lot, of us and he does
kind of made me a winter roll, of dirt, You
know AND so i took a lot of that dirt
is some of his, black lamb but some of it's

(01:36:56):
kind of like like a red. Sandy loan AND so
i had told them to cut up and win row,
and all we're gonna. Move it AND so i got,
about fourteen uh well four fourteen yard loans of dirt
brought to my House. In Columbus and i'm kind of
on the south Side, of columbus AND so i call
a crawfee DIRT and i put it in a garden
for fourteen yards in my garden or that rids kind

(01:37:19):
of like red. Sandy. Loan uh if it, Don't grow
i'm gonna be.

Speaker 13 (01:37:24):
In trouble my wife is gonna.

Speaker 28 (01:37:25):
Be mad is there ANYTHING that i.

Speaker 3 (01:37:27):
Need to do with? That dirt?

Speaker 8 (01:37:32):
Make?

Speaker 3 (01:37:32):
Sure WELL what i WOULD what i? WOULD do i
would do a saw. Test first if you go to,
My website gardening with skip. Dot com in, my publications
there's one about getting, saw tested and it takes you
the link directly to the state lab in them and
it tells you how to take. THIS out i saw test,
you first.

Speaker 24 (01:37:51):
And.

Speaker 3 (01:37:53):
Okay well find out what you got? In, it UH
because i can. Tell you, you know, in general a
lawn fertilizer is going to be a good blend of
what you're probably going. To Need but I'M not i
don't have a, crystal ball and so you need to
see what's in, your soil and the soil test is
the way you. Do that but, in general in, a
pinch you can always use a lawn fertilizer and you're

(01:38:15):
probably not going to go. Wrong there it just may
be that you have a deficiency that you need to
fects that a lawn fertilizer is not going. To affix
so that's why the sub test is to get a,
good job because you do not want you do. Not,
Want pardon, I'm not. I'M not i put it in.

Speaker 28 (01:38:32):
MY garden i put it about fourteen yards over. My
Garden and i'm just. Wondering, This, okay YEAH because i
did that. ONE time i THINK at A, and m
and they said my soul, real acidic AND so i
needed something like a twenty zero zero fertilizer to put,
on IT and i.

Speaker 3 (01:38:50):
Did that whatever the, sal, test yeah whatever, it says
but let's get. It right, UH hey i appreciate. Your
call we need to get.

Speaker 21 (01:38:58):
It.

Speaker 3 (01:38:58):
Right though you do not need to have an unhappy
SPOUSE because i found that. MY back i have back
TROUBLE when i have to sleep on the couch all.

spring it. Is time. Don't delay let's Go To Steven deer.
Park Now, hey steve welcome To. Garden line hey.

Speaker 29 (01:40:09):
Hey.

Speaker 19 (01:40:09):
SKIP uh i had a couple of quick questions if.
You can one thing is we just had to replace
a section of the lawn that. Was dead we scraped
it up and put down some new SOD and uh
was wanting your advice on how to give that a.

Speaker 3 (01:40:28):
Good. Start, uh well you want to you want to
get the nutrient levels where they need, to be and
it takes it takes some fertilizing to. Do that i've
got a. Schedule online it's free to look out or
download or print At gardeningwith skip, dot com and it
tells you when, to fertilize what do? You, use uh,

(01:40:49):
and everything as well as any kind of weed and
disease and pest problems you. Might have that's on a
separate schedule that's also on. THE website U and i would. Recommend, UH.

Speaker 6 (01:41:01):
Okay i look at, your SCHEDULE but i didn't.

Speaker 8 (01:41:03):
Go ahead know you had a section for.

Speaker 19 (01:41:05):
New lawn you have a section that takes care of.

Speaker 13 (01:41:08):
New lawn no LIKE where i put The, new no it's.

Speaker 3 (01:41:11):
It's no new lawn cares like old. Long care how
long ago did you say you laid?

Speaker 27 (01:41:15):
The sod.

Speaker 19 (01:41:18):
Oh just? This week?

Speaker 26 (01:41:21):
This.

Speaker 3 (01:41:22):
Week OKAY what i recommend is the most important thing
with new sod is to get good contact between the
sod and the soil, below it so there's no air
gaps underneath the side. You laid the second thing is
to keep it, continually moist light applications of water to
keep it alive until it can get. Roots down and

(01:41:43):
that's going to take at least a couple of weeks
to get that, well underway and then after a month
you can think about. Fertilizing IT if i, WERE you
i would just wait and do your first fertilization In
early april according to my schedule with a slow, release
product and it'll. Be fine no need to jump out
of the fertilizer. Right now it's got some it's got

(01:42:03):
nutrients that it needs. For now but once it warms
up and, gets grown it's when you want to. Do
it and it's it's on my schedule that Starts. In april.

Speaker 19 (01:42:13):
AND then i was going to ask if you could
give me some tips on how you get your tomatoes
when you plant them in.

Speaker 27 (01:42:19):
The ground.

Speaker 8 (01:42:21):
How you how you do it that gives you.

Speaker 7 (01:42:23):
Good, success, uh.

Speaker 3 (01:42:27):
Well having soil that's, well worked mixing the nutrient down in.
THE ground i like To Use nelson's genesis. Transplant mix
it's a it's a you just. Put, IT normally i
don't recommend putting fertilizer in a planting hole because salt
based fertilizers can, burn Back But nelson's genesis won't. DO
that i mix it in. THE hole i watered in.
Really good and if for the first two or THREE

(01:42:49):
times i water maybe about, a week, you know within
the first, Two weeks i'll use a soluble plant. Solution something,
you know you drench it into the soil and you
just want the roots to hit the ground with all
the nutrients they need and. Take off and THAT'S what,
i do and then get a match. On it after
the soil is, warmed up you can wait the multch for.

(01:43:09):
A while it's a. Good idea you may get some little,
weeds sprouting but then you can smother them with mults
before they get. Too big but warming that soil up
and it's going to be very important and get getting early.
Growth right and.

Speaker 19 (01:43:23):
Then one of the QUICK questions i know you say
to hold off on cutting back the brown on the
plants that have been damaged by the. Cold weather is
it about time to go ahead and start cutting?

Speaker 3 (01:43:34):
It back if you, want to you can go ahead
and cut. It back i've cut some of, mine back
but some Of them i'm still waiting a little bit
LONGER because i don't know if we're gonna have another frost.
Or not but either way. Is Fine, BUT steve, i
appreciate appreciate. Your question thank you, very much and good
luck with all. THOSE projects i get emails from people
on garden line about WHERE do i get? Turf grass

(01:43:55):
what is a good turf to plant things.

Speaker 25 (01:43:57):
Like that.

Speaker 3 (01:43:59):
I'm always really PARTICULAR when i send people out to
get turf grass because they're, you know just because turfs
for sale doesn't mean it's. Quality turf it doesn't mean
it's fresh. Turf Either and i'm telling you one of
the most important things is when turf, is harvested when
they slice it out of the ground and put it
on a palette and take. It somewhere you need to
get that on the ground within twenty four hours if at.

(01:44:20):
All possible definitely within about thirty. Six hours if you
want success. All seasons turf grass is who you want to.
Work with THAT'S who i send. People to they have
more varieties of turf than anybody in. The area They,
got bermuda They Got, saint augustine They, got zoizia and
they have the, right varieties, you know like Xeon. And
palisades by, THE way i have both of those zoisias in.

(01:44:41):
My yard They Have celebration Bermuda, And Raleigh. Saint augustine
that's just naming a few of the many that. They
have but the biggest thing for me is they don't
cut the grass until you, Need it so if you
want to go out there and. Get it if you
got a truck, or trailer, you know you can set,
pallettes in but we're to actually take a trailer.

Speaker 30 (01:44:57):
For that.

Speaker 3 (01:44:59):
You can tell them. Arrange it i'm coming out tomorrow
at ten am and you can pick it up and
you can bring it. Right Home their. Brookshire farm they
have lots, of acres thousands of acres of grass, right
here But their brookshire farm is just about ten miles
west of ninety Nine of highway ninety nine North. Of
berkshire or they can. Deliver it there's usually a delivery charge.

(01:45:22):
For delivery and if you need somebody to, plant it
they have people they work with that can actually take
over and do the planting part. For you that's not,
their company that's other companies that they know. And Trust
All Seasons. Turf grass here's a phone number two eight
one three seven five seventy five. Oh five say that
again two eight one three seventy five seventy five, oh

(01:45:45):
five or just go to The website all seasons turf.
Dot Com all seasons turf. Dot com let's go Out
to kingwood now and Talk to fred. This Morning, hey
fred welcome back. To gardenline, thank, you well.

Speaker 21 (01:46:01):
Thanks again i'm having a Problem in kingwood.

Speaker 3 (01:46:04):
FINDING barricade.

Speaker 21 (01:46:07):
I Went to warrens, last week AND then i went
to AND then i Went To kingwood garden last week
last WEEKEND because i wanted to get it out at,
appropriate time and both of the top People at Warrens
And kingwood garden said they no longer carry. Nitropous barricade

(01:46:28):
they said they have a.

Speaker 3 (01:46:29):
New problem, all, right okay, All right well you got
a couple. Of options you've got an ace hardware STAR
called K And m Hardware On, kingwood drive so that
that would be. One, option okay have you? Tried, Them.

Speaker 21 (01:46:49):
Well i've always got my gardening Supplies from warrens And
From kingwood garden for many. Many years and they. TOLD me,
i said why have you stopped? Karen barricade and nobody
at either store could tell. Me WHY and i suspect
it's because of the new owners and That the warren
family is not in. Charge, anymore.

Speaker 3 (01:47:10):

Lot today barricade is a night fuss product that you
put down to. Prevent weeds and you need to hear
the word PREVENT when i say that barricade does not kill.

(01:53:10):
Existing weeds so if your lawn is full. Of weeds,
right now you're seeing. Winter weeds you need a post
emergent to deal, with those or handpulling or what however
you go. About it barricade prevents the weeds that are
just now sprouting and they're barely, getting started and you
got to prevent them before, the sprout and that's what the.
Barricades for you put, it down you water, it in

(01:53:30):
and that takes care. Of that now it's going to
last about sixty or, more days and at some point
you would do another application. Of barricade you can do a.
Split application read. The label it tells you how to.
Do that do a double application if, you like and
not at, one time but split into two times separated. By,
time okay don't ever overdo a. Pre emergent just do

(01:53:52):
the right thing according to, the label and you'll. Have

And, Kingwood Now, hey dean welcome To. Garden Line, HEY
randy i, Mean, skip sorry.

Speaker 34 (01:58:12):
THAT'S okay i had a really bad had a really
bad patch of a case of brown patch in my lawn,
last year and, UH.

Speaker 3 (01:58:20):
Okay i didn't.

Speaker 34 (01:58:21):
TREAT it i just kept thinking that was going to,
get cold and it. Never, Did anyway i'm WONDERING what
i should treat it in. The spring here.

Speaker 3 (01:58:32):
At, this, Point yeah i'm here at. THIS point i
DON'T think. I would. I would i would treat it
the brown patch. You can but we're about to start
the spring green up here. Pretty good if you look at,
my schedule you will see on there there is a
funge aside for. Brown patch if your lawn has has
this is a problem that you can put, on now

(01:58:54):
but that's gonna be a matter of. Your call brown
patch is not gonna kill, the grass but it will
kill the green leaves off, the runners but then it
just regreens as the weather. Warms UP so i Guess
what i'm saying is as far as the brown circles
you have from the, past one if there are any,
out there they're only going to get better when it.

(01:59:15):
Warms up but if you feel like you're going to
have new growth now coming in and it's going, to
reinfect you could do. A fungicide according to, my schedule
and the list of them is. All there That night
foss has One called Total Brown. Patch control they got
one Called Night foss eagle as well that you can
use on the. Brown patch.

Speaker 34 (01:59:37):
Let me ask, You this i've got a big law
and it's, quarter ACER so i don't want to treat
IT unless i really. Need to SO if i just
let it go in, the spring WHEN should i? TREAT
it i guess in the summer or fall to prevent
it from.

Speaker 27 (01:59:51):
Coming.

Speaker 3 (01:59:52):
Back yeah if you look at my, schedule online it's
the fungicides for brown patcher applied Starting in october and
going on about halfway or a little More into november
is the prime time. Of, infection so and you don't
want to wait after the. Circles appear you want to do.
It preventatively, so also when you overdo, the nitrogen when

(02:00:16):
you really push with, extra nitrogen you have more of
a problem with the brown, Patch circles so try to
try to. Avoid that just give no normal. Appropriate fertilization
but those are the TWO tips i have. For, you dean, got?
It okay and then what is? YOUR website i? Get,
that yeah can you tell me gardening, with huh Gardening

(02:00:40):

me talk about on. Garden line and THE thing i

(02:04:49):
like About in channa gardens is is just a large
place to wander around and just find. Cool stuff, for
example maybe you want to add some bling. Deer landscape
just got restocked on a lot of their. Iron decoratives
we're talking about the the, you know rusty iron. Attractive
things we're talking about the painted iron like maybe a

(02:05:11):
it looks like a, swallrow cactus but it's painted and
it's just an iron structure out there in. The garden
you just have to go see it and Is really
they have a lot of really, cool stuff beautiful iron
hanging baskets and. Other things they've gotten stocked. Up, on
kalladiums all kinds. Of kalladiums, you know we plant those
in the spring for beautiful foliage color in shade that's

(02:05:33):
too deep to grow other things that flower and. Have
color kalladiums are a good one and you can get
stocked up now where those get picked over quality plants,
annual plants perennial plants. Like salvias they're all There At.
Enchanted gardens and along with that is a team that
is so enthusiastic and so helpful and. So knowledgeable you

katie fullsher's Out of RICHMOND on fm three point Fifty
Nine Entented gardens richmond. Dot com we're going to go
Now to katie and Talk to george. This, Morning, hey

(02:06:17):
george welcome To. Garden line, good.

Speaker 37 (02:06:20):
MORNING sir a quick question. FOR you i did not
PUT down i Have sent. AUGUSTINE grass i did not
put down any BARRICADE yet i plan to do. THIS
weekend i was going to ask you what's your opinion
on the barricade versus we didn't feed like the product
they have at that big.

Speaker 3 (02:06:40):
Box, store, Yeah, so george in, THE spring i am
not a fan of combining weed control and fertilizing because
the bulk of your fertilizing is done a little bit
later than the bulk of your. Weed control if you're
using weed control that kills, existing weeds you need to

(02:07:02):
get that on. Right away and in cases, some weeds
they've already set seed even this, far in so even earlier,
than now we'd be doing those the. Pre, emergence again
the earlier you get them on in the Month, of
february the better off you are in terms of catching
those weeds that. Come up, you know and like a
week like we're having, this week it's they're gonna they're

(02:07:26):
going to, be sprouting and so you got to get
down ahead. Of THEM so i would rather pick a
fertilizer for my lawn and apply it when the best
time is, for that and pick a weed control for
my lawn and apply it when the best time is,
for that and not. Combine them but the barricade is
a pre emergent and if you're going to, use it
you need to get it on asap because we do

(02:07:47):
have weeds that. ARE germanying a lot of weeds will
Germinate in march, as well but you don't want to
miss any of the early. Germinating, weeds.

Speaker 37 (02:07:56):
Okay so you recommend to go with re emergent right,
right away and weight On if i'm going to do
the weed and feed weight on it a.

Speaker 8 (02:08:06):
Little bit, any FERTILIZING.

Speaker 3 (02:08:11):
Well, I would i would on the you can. Do
it you can do a spring green Up. In march
for using a fast, release fertilizer, that's fine you can.
Do that but the bulk of your fertilizing is when
we start the slow Releases in april to cover the whole,
growing season when the grass is, moving fast when it's
warm and the grass is happy to.

Speaker 37 (02:08:32):
Grow, fast, okay great thank you.

Speaker 8 (02:08:36):
Very much.

Speaker 3 (02:08:38):
Thank you. Appreciate that appreciate your call. Very Much Nights
frost imperial is an example one. Of those by, The,
way george we were talking about a spring. Green up
it's a fifteen to five To ten and if you
look at my schedule with a spring, green up it
can start In late february or it can go up
INTO maybe i let the third Week, of ART but

(02:09:01):
i would get it on In. EARLY march i think
that's prime time for getting down the spring. Green up
if you're going to, use it you want to use a,
moderate dose not, a lot not a, whole lot just a,
moderate dose and you want to get it down there,
watered in and what it's going to do is the
grass is starting to wake up and you get a
little more. Green on it looks a little bit better
early on with an extra boost. Of nutrients but when

(02:09:23):
it comes to the longer term that Starts, in april
and we do a gradual Night FoST ass products for that.
As well but you're going to Find night foss products
all over, the place plants for. All seasons on two
forty nine carries it ospas ace In the Woodlands And
jenic gardens Down In richmond, rosenberg area and then if
you go, down south You. Know angleton We Got lake
Hardware and Angleton And lake Hardware and clute and both

(02:09:46):
of Those carry Knight too. Foss products let's go Down
to Linda. And, Dickinson, hello linda welcome To. Garden, line hi.

Speaker 14 (02:09:54):
GOOD morning i have. Two questions one what do you
what do you do to get get rid? Of grubs
and secondly could the grubs be the CAUSE of i
have a bed IN which i put in brand new roastal,
compos fertilizer did all the, right stuff And everything i've
planted there has either died or. Not thrived could the

(02:10:18):
grubs be that the.

Speaker 8 (02:10:21):
Cause?

Speaker 10 (02:10:21):
Of that?

Speaker 3 (02:10:23):
All right. Probably not grubs prefer grass over broadly flowers,
and things and typically if you were to dig up
part of that flower bed a plant, in it you
would have to see a lot, of grubs like maybe
seven grubs per square foot in order, to say well
a GRASSY ornamental i put here was affected, By THEM

(02:10:46):
and i doubt that's. The case grubs primarily attack in,
the Summer. Is linda if you'll go to my website
And bookmarket gardening with skip dot com on there is a,
long pest disease and weed. Management schedule it's a ONE
page eat that you print out and it tells, you
insects diseases and weeds through, the year and grubs on
our schedule. Show up and the first treatment Is. In

(02:11:09):
june that's When the, june beetles the may beetles that
are are you see them flying around the lights at
night when it's. Getting warm, they mate they lay eggs
and that's when the eggs. Are hatching so you treat
the grubs while they're up at. The surface Then, in
july if you need, another treatment you can treat with
different products that will wash down deeper into the soil

(02:11:31):
because the Grubs by July and august are moving. Down
deeper but there's nothing to do for grubs right now
all the Way until june's that's when. We start but
that's on the schedule and it tells the products you use.

Speaker 14 (02:11:45):
To do you have any thoughts about what would cause
something not to thrive in, that bed because you know there's, A.

Speaker 3 (02:11:53):
Lot yeah there's.

Speaker 8 (02:11:55):
A lot.

Speaker 3 (02:11:57):
Go ahead, I'm, sorry no, that's okay you. Go ahead,
you know something not thriving can. Be doe they can
be due to a lot. Of things lack of sunlight
causes plants that. Not thrive droughty conditions cause plants they.
Not thrive soggy wet conditions where the roots are, sitting

(02:12:17):
underwater so, to speak can cause plants to. Not thrive
lack of nutrients could be the cause of plants. Not
thriving if you'd like, some time take a picture of
what not thriving looks like and of some plants and
send those to me and then follow it up with
a call To garden line and we can talk. About it,
you KNOW when i look at a particular plant in,

(02:12:38):
the bed a species and see what it's. Looking like
i'll probably have some opinions about what the specific causes.

Speaker 27 (02:13:35):
They've.

Speaker 3 (02:13:36):
Got that and so in some areas when the weather,
gets hot it's hard to come up with ballooms for the.
Landscape there they're fewer than. In spring but these things
that have foliage. Are outstanding but they also have, blooming plants,
of course the, blooming cannas, the annuals, the perennials lots,
of hibiscus just just. Outstanding things beautiful color from. ANNUALS

(02:13:59):
too i love some of the vegetable selections and the
herb selections that they. HAVE there i. Don't know it's
just a fun place to plant. To shop but when,
you shop you got to start off by going through.
The store going through the store on, the inside take
a look at the indoor. Plant selection it. Is gorgeous
and you know about. Colorful foliage, that's nice. YOU know

(02:14:20):
i like green, house plants but most houseplants are green
or some form, of green but bringing color in and
there are a lot of plants that. Bring Color aglinema
chinese evergreen brings color to the indoors, very well and
there are other plants.

Speaker 21 (02:14:37):
That.

Speaker 3 (02:14:37):
Do mirana some of the maranas have beautiful color in.
The foliage but mix it up a little bit and
make your, place exciting because when you're sitting, among plants

Far South but i'm going to give away some bags.
Of that i'm going to also give away some bags,
of barricade the pre emergent prevent. Of weeds when you,
prevent weeds you never even knew they were there because

(02:16:25):
they sprouted and they never. Made plants that's good if
you wait until they. Make plants and now it's summer
and the days are in. The nineties now a lot
of those post emergent products will stress, your lawn Especially
At Saint, augustine lawn and you wish you had done
the barricade to prevent the weeds in the. First place
that's how. That works so where do the wise show

(02:16:49):
UP at D and D feeding tomball on twenty nine

of garden line coming.

Speaker 8 (02:18:05):
Up here oh.

Speaker 3 (02:18:08):
MY god i keep looking out the window and It's
like i'm about to crawl out of. My skin everybody's
gardener in the spring, at least right it is the
best spring fever time of.

Speaker 2 (02:18:22):
The year.

Speaker 3 (02:18:22):
FOR sure I wish i could bottle some of this
up and release it into the water supplies in. Your
town in mind, in fall because fall is a great planning,
season too but we sure get. Spring fever that's the
one that it seems to be the most most powerful
time of. THE year i have speculated in the past

(02:18:44):
as to what. Causes that is there some microbe in
the soil that releases this chemical substance yet to be
discovered that gets in our brains and causes us to
become crazy about. Spring, gardening yeah you KNOW what, i
mean also causes us to lose reason in. THE spring

(02:19:04):
I think i can, DO everything I think i can,
grow EVERYTHING and i go to the, GARDEN center i
come home with more PLANTS and i. Have space And
then i'm sitting there, going okay but it was calling
my name in the. Garden center WHAT am i going?
To do, that's okay. That's okay just make another. Flower
bed there. You go it's easy, to, do right make another.

(02:19:25):
Flower bed if you're, looking for by, the way quality
place to get quality blends, of soil the ground up
is that kind of place the ground. Up is it's actually.
Three locations there is a location that is open to.
The public of the, three locations they're all on the,

(02:19:46):
west side and that is Called The. Bretmoor location now
it's Open. On, saturdays okay so you Go on saturday
from seven am to noon that would. Be today they're
open till, noon today and you can pick up bags
of composts and. Maltz products you can pick. Up plants

(02:20:06):
that is the location that, has plants and they have an.
Unbelievable selection aaron in his team has put together a
lot of really good plants that are not that easy
to just. Get anywhere these are some things that are
not as common as they should be in, the trade
but they have them there at The ground up if
you want to give them a call two eight one
nine to seven oh zero zero zero three two eight

(02:20:29):
one nine seven oh three the ground up. Dot com while,
you're there check out. The products they have blends for veggies.
And herbs they have blends for potting soils Called The Boheman.
Potting blend they've, got rosemixes they've got general bed, growing
mixes and of course many kinds, of composts many kinds
of mult you. Name it they've got a double screen

(02:20:52):
compost it's an expect especially, fine textured as well as
a leap mole. Compost too both of those would be
fine for top stop dressing in. Your lawn and you're
gonna find the ground up bags available at. Garden Centers,
like Moss, like SIENNA, like rcw Like that ace hardware, Down,
there Memorial the ace Hardware. On champions those are. Some

(02:21:15):
examples go to The ground up dot com find a
full list of where you can buy ground. Up products
but the main thing is. Do it get, out there
dig in, the dirt have. SOME fun i know, it's
soil give me some. Room here it's just the best
thing you can do for success with. Your plants THAT'S
why i say brown stuff before. Green stuff don't PLoP

(02:21:38):
a poor plant into an. Unprepared plot fix the, soil
first and everyone will think you have a green thumb
because you started with the soil and the ground up's
a great place to. Do that if you got a
question and you would like to, talk gardening you can do.
Two things, number one you can come see me TODAY
at D And d feed, talk live face. To face.

(02:22:01):
Well visit i'll even allow you to brag about the
tomatoes you agrew, last year ALTHOUGH inside i might be
questioning whether you're telling me the truth. Or Not but
i'll be there from twelve pm noon to two p
m answering, gardening questions giving away some night frost products.
As well uh. That's one the other thing is you
can pick up the phone right now and you can

(02:22:22):
dial seven one three two one two fifty eight seventy
four seven one three two, one, two, five eight. Seven
four we'll talk about that. As well was talking about
barricade in that last segment a lot and, earlier too
because it is. The time this is like, barricade season,
and uh, you know there are a lot of things.

(02:22:43):
Like fertilizing someone will call me and, they'll, GO well
i miss that fertilizing on, Your schedule so WHAT do.
I do we'll put it. On now if, it's late.
It's okay it's not like the nutent are all gone
because you. Didn't fertilize they're just not at the levels
you want them to. Be fertilize but when it comes,
to barricade when it comes to, PRE emerging i don't

(02:23:03):
care what brand uppe emergent you. Use it when it
comes to, pre emergence timing is critical because once the
weeds are sprouting and growing and now they are, weed
plants these products are, pre emergents they're not, post emergents
and so you got to get them ahead. Of TIME
and i tend to air on the early side of ahead.
Of time, you know you can sit there, and, go

(02:23:25):
well let's do it on this day, right HERE and
i want to wait as LONG as, i can so
it lasts as long into the SEASON as i. Can
now get it. Down early if it's a, little early.
That's fine barricade's going to be around for sixty days
plus and then you can apply it again if you,
need to but get it. Down early, don't wait because
he who hesitates. IS lost i didn't make. That up

(02:23:47):
someone else said it good one to hunt, Down though
but that's true. With barricade where do you? Get, It
well night fash products are widely available across. The Area
Ace hardware City Of, Memorld Drive laningham creek Is heard
run five. Twenty nine that's Backside of. Copperfield Neighborhood There's
fishers hardware is. Down south there's there's One on Southomore,

(02:24:08):

and ONE on fm thirty One Eighty. Fishers hardware so
those are all options for places you can get. Night,
fostproducts oh there's Also A fisher's hardware Down in Baytown.
On alexander but we're gonna go North, To Conroe south

(02:24:29):
conroe and Talk to path. This, Morning, hey pat welcome To.
Garden line, Good.

Speaker 6 (02:24:34):
Morning, SKIP hey i just sent you some pictures of
some LANTANA that i HAVE that i. Trimmed back i'm
curious if YOU think i. Killed them.

Speaker 3 (02:24:48):
I'm sure you didn't. Kill them let's, see here would
this Be From? Clint cruiser would the Email?

Speaker 12 (02:24:58):
Be?

Speaker 3 (02:25:00):
Cruiser okay, All, right no you didn't. Kill them. They
froze and if you take your thumbnail and go all
the way to the base of, that stem right where
it goes into, the mulch scrape the skin surface back
and see if you see green. Underneath it it ought
to be grin green, underneath it and if, it's not

(02:25:21):
it just killed it. Further back, all right it.

Speaker 17 (02:25:25):
Is, green.

Speaker 3 (02:25:28):
Okay well then, You're, okay no you didn't. Kill them
ONE thing i often say about about taking, care of,
you know these plants, and things is let the plant
tail you were, to prune, You know in, other words
you could go back now and scrape every plant and
try to figure out how far back to, cut it
or you could just wait and when you first see
the little green bud starting to push, out growth cut

(02:25:50):
it back. To there BECAUSE everything i suspect everything in
your pictures is dead and the green is going to
come out from low, Down low so, all, right okay
you're all, as well all, As well you've got. All
right lintown is a wonderful plant, to have, all right take.

Speaker 6 (02:26:10):
Care, of, OH yeah i. APPRECIATE you i loved all
the butterflies they.

Speaker 27 (02:26:13):
Brought, in.

Speaker 3 (02:26:16):
Yeah they, Sure do. Thanks sir let's go Down to
katie and Talk. To, Kevin, hey kevin, by you.

Speaker 17 (02:26:22):
Good morning skip.

Speaker 12 (02:26:25):
With the.

Speaker 17 (02:26:25):
PRE emergent i have a spray, pre emergent uh that,
YOU know i run through the. PUMP sprayer i think.
It's DIMENSION can i piggyback that with weed beater ULTRA
because i got quite a. Few, weeds.

Speaker 3 (02:26:42):
Yes you. Can do not piggyback it with another, pre
emergent like if you used. To mention don't use, barricade
too because that's like using either one of them twice
in terms of how it perhaps and the effect on
the lawn. And, stuff so but you can go h
with a post emergent like. You mentioned you can do

(02:27:02):
that for the, existing weeds but you need to check
your weeds and once they are, you know blooming and setting,
viable seed those post emergents aren't, As effective so if
you're going to, try them do. Them asap but you
may end up having to do hand pulling or use
your mower set load to try to capture those already.
Existing weeds if there are any on the weeds that.

Speaker 17 (02:27:23):
You have, oh, okay yeah the plan is to do.
It today i'm getting ready. FOR it I just i
wasn't SURE if i could lay down both at the,
Same time so.

Speaker 13 (02:27:35):
Thank.

Speaker 3 (02:27:35):
You, yeah now now HERE'S what i, would. DO though
I would i would do the barricade AND then i
would water it in with about a third of an
intra irrigation and let that, dry off and then do
the post emergent because you don't want to put the
post emergent down and. Then barricade and then when you

(02:27:55):
water in, the barricade you're washing post emergent off the
leaves that you. Just sprayed so do the question after
that barricade watering in has. Dried.

Speaker 17 (02:28:03):
Up okay i'm using, dimension though so do the same
thing just.

Speaker 18 (02:28:08):
With that.

Speaker 3 (02:28:10):
Dimension also needs to move to the. Soil, surface, yeah
yeah move into the. Soil surface it doesn't take a lot.
Of water they need read the label. On it but
if you're you're using you set a. Liquid, Form.

Speaker 17 (02:28:24):
Yeah i'm just putting in the in the pump sprayer.

Speaker 22 (02:28:28):
For the.

Speaker 17 (02:28:29):
Pre, emergent, okay, yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:28:31):
Okay well follow follow whatever the label says on.

Speaker 17 (02:28:34):
That, product, okay gotcha thanks, that Much.

Speaker 3 (02:28:39):
Or kevin thank you. Very, much yeah appreciate appreciate your call. Very.
Much uh let's, SEE here, i Think, UH marco i
ran along, on. THAT didn't i think we need to
take a little break care, all right welcome back to the. Guard, line,
hey uh have you guys been Down To Jorges? Hidden?
Gardens uh Down. In alvin it's Actually between Alvin And.

(02:29:01):
Santa fe It's an. Alvin Address It's elizabeth Street. In
alvin jorge is loaded up on FRUIT and i mean
the peach tree is already blooming and the out of
the pots. Down there he has got some, excellent selection
wide variety, of fruit not just. PEACH trees i mean
every kind of fruit you can imagine that you would want.

(02:29:22):
To grow and, that's trees and that's bushes like a
blueberry bush. For example he's stocked up and you need
to go check. Him out he also has roses like
The Wonderful peggy. Martin climbers he's got him on these
little mini lattices coming out of the pot so very.

Speaker 17 (02:29:38):
Very.

Speaker 3 (02:29:38):
Attractive Uh Jorges hidden gardens down There. In alvin the
geraniums are starting to. Bloom up they look really good.
Right now he's got a lot of. Different colors and
he Also has. Colis colius used to be a really
popular plant in a. Decade past, you know it wasn't.
This popular it just kind of fell. From popularity but

(02:30:01):
it is a. Great plant it does well in, the
shade and the new types do well in. The sun
he's got a good selection.

Speaker 26 (02:30:06):
Of.

Speaker 3 (02:30:06):
Those uh if he's if you're looking for a, deciduous
magnolia that's one of the first things to bloom in.
The spring beautiful little shrub slash. Mini tree he's. Got
those he has trees and shrubs and roses and you.
Name It Jorges, Hidden Gardens elizabeth Street. And alvin here
is a. Phone number this is what you need. To
know seven to one three six three two fifty two

(02:30:29):
ninety seven one three six three two five two. Nine
zero you need to go by there check. Them out,
all right here, We go we're gonna head Out to
celia now and Talk. To, Mike, hey mike welcome To.
Guarden line, Good.

Speaker 38 (02:30:44):
Morning SKIP i've i got one of those thirty gallons
self watering Things, from VEGO and i have a mier limit.
In IT do i need to do any additional watering?
To that or will that self watering thing in the
bottom be.

Speaker 3 (02:30:58):
Sufficient as long as you keep it. Adequately MOIST what
i would do is occasionally stick your finger down there in,
the dirt get a, little trial pull back about four
inches of soil and feel it four or five, inches
deep and if it's not, very moist then add some
extra moisture. To it and when we get, into summer,
everything's hot the, soil's hot the plants, are hot and

(02:31:21):
the water's. Pumping fast and that's when you need to
watch it. The most as long as you keep water in,
the bottom it's constantly waking up and the roots will be,
down there they'll know where the dependable. Water is they'll.
Stay there but we tend to forget it and it
can pump. Pretty fast so just, check that especially when

(02:31:41):
the weather. Heats up, All, right okay that.

Speaker 6 (02:31:45):
Sounds good thank you, very much, you bet thank you for.

Speaker 3 (02:31:49):
THE call i. Appreciate that let's now Go to Tiffany. And,
Cyprus Well, Hello, tiffany welcome to. Garden, Line, hi hi.

Speaker 39 (02:31:58):
GOOD morning a couple. OF questions i know that at
the Beginning, of march you know the green up the fifteen,
five ten and for, the backyard we like to keep
it real organic for our dogs when they, go out
and then we have a lot of bunnies. Out there
would the six two four microlife be Okay in march

(02:32:22):
OR should i wait and do That?

Speaker 24 (02:32:25):
In?

Speaker 3 (02:32:25):
April, okay well the microlife you're going to do it
multiple times through. The year all of our fertilizing we
can do more than once through. The year but microlife
you can start It in march if. You want and
it's an, organic product so it's going to. Microbially decompose

(02:32:45):
that means that when the soil, is cooler it doesn't
release as fast as when the soil gets. Warmed, up
good but there's no problems starting. It earlier just know
that occasionally you're going to go out and do another.
Microlife application you can do it once, a year but
i'd recommend at least twice, a year maybe, three times
depending on how much you put out in any given.

(02:33:07):
One time and it just continues to build the soil
too as you, go.

Speaker 39 (02:33:13):
Okay gotcha and what about a's? And mite when do
you recommend us putting?

Speaker 19 (02:33:18):
That out.

Speaker 3 (02:33:20):
That is more think of it as a soil bank
account thing that you want to always have a good,
supply in so it doesn't matter when you. Do, it
really nitrogen and other things they're needed in large quantities
to support. Fast growth so we're fertilizing when the plant's
wanting to take off and grow and while. It's growing with,

(02:33:41):
the asamite it's more like it would be MORE like
i think of. Your pantry you've got flour and sugar
and salt and things like that in, the pantry so
when you, need them you just go. Grab them. They're
there that's. The asimite so when do you stock your pantry?
Up anytime it doesn't matter or win as opposed to the,
regular big big number. Of fertilizers, yeah.

Speaker 25 (02:34:06):
Right.

Speaker 39 (02:34:06):
Gotcha okay and the? Nitrofoss bugout do you recommend putting
that on in? The spring and is that safe for
every like all the other animals?

Speaker 3 (02:34:21):
Out, there well you, know that you know there there's
there's always a debate about chemicals and pets and people
and things. Like that there's not a big reason to
put bug out out in. The, spring now bug out
can have some effect on, fire ants so there is
a benefit to that in and, of itself but primarily

(02:34:42):
we're using it when we Get into June, and july
when we get into grub season and chinch, bug season
that's when the bugout typically. Comes OUT and I would
i would recommend for the fire ants just going with
a bait and right hold off on this.

Speaker 39 (02:35:01):
Perfect, perfect well thank you, so much and you have a.

Speaker 3 (02:35:04):
Great weekend, all right you, as well thank you for.
Your Call Nelson, plant foods so, many options, You. Know nelson's,
OF course i always talk about, their genesis but that
is part Of The nutri. Star Line nutri star, are
jars bottle jars actually of fertilizer products that are specifically

(02:35:29):
usually targeted towards. Specific plants There's A nutri star, For
pulumerias There's A nutri star, for roses there's one. For
vegetables there's one for you get. Grape mertles you get.
The idea they're, all great they. Work well the most
famous Of the nelson products Is The. Color star still
it's been its most popular blend for over forty. Years
now and it's does it have flowers? On, it, yes Okay.

(02:35:51):
Color star that's a good fertilizer, for, it annuals, perennial,
shrubs trees other. Flowering Plants color star, acts fast but
it's got organic nutrient sources slowly released into, the soil
so you only need to apply it about every three
or four months for. Good Results color Star from nelson
comes in. The jars over a dozen places now in
town carry the refel Stations for Nelson. Plant foods so you,

(02:36:15):
go there you take A color star jar in this case,
back in pull, the handle. Refill it it's more economical
and you didn't throw, away plastic which we need to
be doing less. Of anyway and a smart thing from
the folks at now some. Plant food it's Got to
galveston now and Talk to bill. This Morning, hey bill
welcome to the. Garden line how are you.

Speaker 26 (02:36:35):
This skip i'm getting Ready to i'm getting ready to
put in some saw and, you know we had a
problem with the root Rot and i'm thinking about putting
saw it in instead to take to replace. The lawn
and my, question IS as i, said One is i'm
talking about doing It, in april Just.

Speaker 3 (02:36:56):
After easter is?

Speaker 26 (02:36:57):
That kid is that a? Good time.

Speaker 3 (02:37:00):
It's a. Great time by the time We, had april
the grass is really starting to grow and the sod
will hit the. Ground running it's still, fairly cool and
so the demands are less and it's, you know you're
trying to keep it alive. With water is not the
same as when it's one hundred degrees. In summer so
it's a great time, to.

Speaker 26 (02:37:18):
Plant okay, And, yeah SECONDLY should i get a tiller
and tie up?

Speaker 12 (02:37:26):
The?

Speaker 3 (02:37:26):
Soil one?

Speaker 26 (02:37:27):
And TWO should i put, you know the top toil
in with it and till it or compost or something
like that?

Speaker 14 (02:37:34):
Or not.

Speaker 3 (02:37:35):
You, you can, you can you. Can till you can
break up the soil a. Little bit if you feel like.
It's compacted you can put a little bit of a
mix on there with some some, top soil maybe a
tiny bit of a compost, mixed in just not. Straight
compost mix it in and level it out. Really good
you want it nice, and level and then water it

(02:37:56):
down so it. Settles down because when you lay, the
side one of the most important things is good contact with.
The soil so if you if your ground is undulating
and you kind of have a little of a, dip
here and then it comes up again and you lay
that piece of sod, over it and there's an. Air
gap the roots are not gonna make it down in
the soil as effectively as if it's got solid contact with.

(02:38:19):
The soil so. That's important by. THE way i don't

you just want to? Water it you can do it
three days before just to. Settle it in would, IN
fact i wouldn't do it a DAY before i, do
it but two or three. Days before let's settle down
real good and then lay the sod press the, saw
down sade down with, good contact and then keep, it

(02:41:29):
moist but about once or twice, a day a very
light sprinkling of water to help it, stay moist depending
on the temperatures. We're having it's come back in. The eighties,
you know you may want to sprinkle it a couple
of times the first few days and a day and
then go to once a day after that for about,
a week and then it ought to be it ought
to be on. Its way you can start. Backing, off okay.

Speaker 8 (02:41:52):
That's GREAT can i put a bulgan?

Speaker 13 (02:41:53):

Speaker 8 (02:42:12):
Justice center.

Speaker 3 (02:42:14):
There, you, Go, THANKS bill i. Appreciate. That yep if
you don't participate in, the process you can't complain about, the.
Results folks THAT'S how. I work so there. You go
the Folks at medina have so many excellent fertilizers and
products that are microbial products that are. OUT there i
want to tell you about one and that's has to
grow twelve four eight. Lawn food has to grow twelve

(02:42:37):
four eight. Lawn food you can buy it in. A
gallon you can buy it in. A quart here's. A
tip start off by buying. A quirt it's got a
hose in connection on it and you just walk through
the yard with the hosean sprayer applying that right to.
Your grass it's quick and it has quick results for
the grass and it really. Does work done By The.

(02:43:00):
Allen jog it's, more money but you just refill your
applicator that you bought to begin with the quirk applicator
with it from the gallon jog and your money goes a.
Lot further. Either way you gotta have it. On Hand
and i'm want to tell. You something it says hash
to grow for our twelve four to eight. LONG food
i would use it. ON tomatoes i would use it
ANYWHERE that i want to get a plant to kick

(02:43:22):
in the gear and get growing that can be. A rosebud,
i mean use it where you want, it now can
burn your Plants with it's a. Good product let's go
Out To conro now we're going to Talk with larry.
This Morning, hello Larry welcome.

Speaker 24 (02:43:33):
Reguard, line Yes, hello skiff and thank you for taking.
My Call let's i'm putting down some barricade. This weekend
and you mentioned. ANOTHER product i could put it down the,
same day a, different application something in.

Speaker 27 (02:43:48):
A red bag.

Speaker 24 (02:43:51):
That you Talk, About, imperial yes down the, same day, just,
separate yes, Go, ahead.

Speaker 3 (02:44:00):
Yes both of them want to be watered into. The
soil so you fill up your hopper with the barricade
and put it out at the. RIGHT rate i would
go light one direction and then use the rest of
it go in the. Other direction. That way, you know
if you were, to SAY well I need x pounds
for this area and you put it down and you

(02:44:22):
get halfway across and you, run out will you just
over applied it and then that the arrest didn't Get
ANY so i always set myce on these pre emergent.
Herbicide application set, it light go. Over it you can
have maybe plan on using half of it up and
then go the other way with the. Other half then
do the fertilizer and then water it all in about

(02:44:43):
a half. Inch, Water, okay skip sounds like a.

Speaker 20 (02:44:46):
Good plan i'll make, it happen, all.

Speaker 3 (02:44:49):

hibiscus is so, Gaudy anyway they've got him there at The.
Arbor gate. Something else you need to get into their
gift shops and check them. Out THERE but i want
you to go Into the arburgate and ask him do
you Still Have The Texas Tomato lover's Handbook By. Bill
adams bill's local guy lives Out in. Brennam area he's

(02:45:55):
if you had a gardener and you want to just
give him a, gift book those would. Be Great Southern
Kitchen Garden Texas tomato lover's handbuck at The. Arbor gate Where's. The,
arborgate well it's West of tombull on twenty nine, to
twenty just outside of town on the left. Hand side
now you want to it's busy now out, there people
very popular. Garden center you want to Go On, trishel

(02:46:17):

behind The arbor gate and comes back into twenty nine.
To twenty so Look for trischel before you Get. To
arburgate if you, miss it you See, arbor gate keep
going and keep looking to The arbor, gate side You'll.
See traischel swing around the back parking that nice parking
area in. The, back oh that's the best new thing
they've added in a good while there at The. Arbor

(02:46:39):

room leave room in, the car or hook up a
trailer because you're gonna need. It there you're going to
fall in love at the arbor gate. For sure, oh
boys so, many plants so, little space so. Little time is?

Speaker 30 (02:46:59):
That right.

Speaker 3 (02:47:02):
Someone just visiting Talking about Was it Larry? Or bill.

Speaker 13 (02:47:08):
Who?

Speaker 2 (02:47:09):
Was?

Speaker 3 (02:47:09):
THAT anyway i was talking to somebody About Night. Foss
imperial that's the orange red Bag. From nitrofoss it is
a reddish green, excuse me a reddish orange bag that
has fifteen to five to ten quick release fertilizer. In
it and you know we talk about quick release and
slow release. Quick release when you get, it wet, it
dissolves the nutrients go in. The soil that's how. It

(02:47:30):
works so you put it on at the. Right rate
it's for early green up if you want to. Use
it but if you want to use fifteen five, to
ten you can take the rate and cut it in
half and do it twice and get a longer, extended
release so you become the slow release rather than the fertilizer.
Releasing slowly you're a plying it gradually slowly, over time

(02:47:54):
so you can go either way. With it most people
just put it on now for a quick green up and.
It works it's available all. Over town you're going to
find it at Places Like pinetoral Seasons On, tombaill parkway
allspas as In, The Woodlands enchanted gardens DOWN on fm
three point Fifty, Nine richmond, rosenberg area And The lake
Hardware in angleton. And include let's go to the phones

(02:48:15):
now and we're going to Go to Elizabeth. In, Sugarland,
hello elizabeth welcome To. Garden line.

Speaker 30 (02:48:21):
Thank.

Speaker 22 (02:48:22):
You hello i'm calling to ask about information on pruning our.

Speaker 11 (02:48:27):
Knockout, roses.

Speaker 3 (02:48:30):
Okay, all right knockout roses or a, shrub rose so
all those things we go through with hybrid t roses
where we prune them a certain way. And stuff you
don't have to worry. About that you're basically sharing. Knockouts,
back now if you wanted to just take shears and go,
over it you could. Do that then you need to
follow up and get all those little things that maybe

(02:48:51):
didn't fully cut all the way through right clean. It
up you could do it. THAT way i do it.
BY hand i prune out all the twiggy growth and
this the whole. Bush back it depends on how big
you want them. To be i've seen knockouts that gets six,
feet high so if you wanted to keep it at four,
feet high you would need to print it way way
back and then let it grow and then share. It

(02:49:12):
periodically and every time you share it you get more
news shoots that, are growing and the bush becomes denser
and it has. More flowers so you can kind of
choose how much you want to. Print it but you
do a late winter printing and then In late april
Or early may you can share them again if.

Speaker 25 (02:49:31):
You'd, like okay and then do you put something on those,
fresh tips like a fertilizer or anything to increase the
growing or do they just do. It themselves.

Speaker 3 (02:49:44):
You can use a fertile you can use a, rose
fertilizer there's a number of them. Out there or you
could just use a lawn fertilizer on. Your roses it's.
Just FINE what i talk about for, lawn fertilizer you
could use on roses and it'll do.

Speaker 16 (02:49:57):
Just, fine okay, all, right well thank you.

Speaker 3 (02:50:00):
So much i'm gonna have. To, run, yeah yeah thanks for.
The call appreciate that we're gonna take. A break we'll be, right.
Back folks. All right you KNOW what i can't do
with that is spring. Spring WEATHER h i. Love it
if you have one drop of gardener blood, in you

(02:51:49):
quality compost, top, dressing aeration and fertilizing of. Your, lawn
so in, other words you got a lawn that's not,
doing well what are you going? To, Do, greenbro greenbro
call them to. Come out they basically serve the northwest Quadrant.
Of houston so if You take interstate forty FIVE and,
i ten it makes a big cross right through the middle,

(02:52:10):
of town the, Northwest quadrant so that Would be Spring
and Cyprus and Woodlands and Conra and Willis and Magnolia
and montgomery and You know katie and out to the
west and that. Whole area they'll. Come out they can.
Do fertilization they are experts. At that they do it.
For you they know how to do. It right they
can do, core aeration which punches the little holes in

(02:52:33):
gets oxygen in, the soil and then they can follow
that with a compost. Top dressing they've got machinery that
spreads it out nice and smooth. And even and you
do all that to a lawn and you will see
recovery from, brown patch from takeo, root rod, from chinchbugs,
from drought and especially, from compaction which really affects the

(02:52:53):
lawn in. Many ways, you know compaction makes a, lot
denser harder to get oxygen in. The soil the root
zone doesn't and the roots don't thrive in that kind of.
A soil you get better rooting depth when, you deration
and the soil biology just wakes up with good oxygen
reaching even deeper down into. The soil simple. As that greenpro,

(02:53:14):
All RIGHT so i needn't tell you how you. Call

(02:55:23):
