Speaker 1 (00:00):
I know how busy you and your deputies are today.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Hey, it's a pleasure to be with you and all
your listeners. Thank you.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You bet so so far. I think a lot of
Houstonians have heeded your call let's just stay off the roads.
Are you noticing that? I think people have been pretty cooperative,
don't you.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Yes, we are noticing that, and we're very appreciative. It
certainly makes it much easier for our all first responders,
not just our deputies. You know, we all work collaboratively
across the region, so we really appreciate it. One encourage
everyone to continue to do the same. Eventually we may
get a little bit of sun and but but this evening,
temperatures are expected to dip again, possibly as low as

(00:40):
into the teens maybe, and so at some point the
snow is going to convert into ice. We're also a
little bit concerned because we are spotting some individuals that
are getting out of the free out of their vehicles
on the freeways taking photo taking photos and selfies. And
we just hurt in your traffic report where they're seeing
some some crashes out there. So that's a very dangerous

(01:01):
activity to do, so please try to stay indoors if
you could, if you could do it.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
I know that road patrols are not a big part
of the deputy's mission. That that's more of you know,
that's more of a state police sort of a function
when it comes to that. But does does the mission
for Harris Coonti Sheriff's Department? How much does that change
when you have an emergency weather situation like this?

Speaker 2 (01:22):
It does change because it really is an all hands
on deck approach. We may just happen to be a
little bit closer to something that may have happened on
the highways, and we do go out and patrol the
highways as well at times. And we do have our
Motors Assistance program as well that's out there assisting stranded motorists.
They are on duty right now and also helping with

(01:42):
some of the snowplows that Textbot was able to bring
into the area to complete the roadway. So we are
out there as well. And again and it's important for
motorists that don't need to be on the roadways to
stay off of because we do have first responders and
others that are trying to bring critical supplies or get
to critical calls for service and so so you know,
we just don't need people out there sliding and causing

(02:03):
more crashes that we have to respond to well.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
And one of the big problems that we talked about
a little bit earlier, and you can elaborate on that
is is because what we prepare for here in Houston
is more in the way of floods than we do
in hurricanes than we do prepare for something like this.
We have elevated roads, they have a tennessee of ice over,
We have a lot of bridges, they have a tendency
of ice over, and heaven forbid you should have to
get on a freeway with a flyover today.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
Absolutely. I think you just framed it very well, and
we were talking earlier what happens. It could be very deceiving.
You could think you're being able to. First of all,
no one here in the greater Houston areas used to,
you know, driving at ten miles an hour. But if
you're crossing a bridge at a slow speed and you
tap on the brakes, it may be hard to stop
at a red light, or you may just slide as

(02:49):
you're coming down downhill a bit if you're coming off
of a bridge or something like that. It could be
very deceiving. And we know that a lot of folks say, well,
I'm from Kansas, I'm from Michigan. I'm used to this.
Maybe you are, but Houstonians are not. And so we're
putting each other at harm's way by being out on
the road.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
Lay well, I haven't lived in Michigan for over twenty
five years, so I'm not used to it any I'm
not used to it that anymore. If you were, if
you were smart enough, if you were smart enough to
move to Texas twenty or twenty five years ago, then
then guess what you lost. You lost your winter driving privileges.
You forgot all that good stuff, edank, Thanks thanks for
checking in. We sure to appreciate it. You' all be

(03:25):
safe out there, okay, thank you.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Appreciate you as well. Thank you.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Bet. That is Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzales, all right,
