Question for you regarding foam insulation. I have a one
hundred year old house with no insulation in the walls whatsoever.
But as they built them back then ship lap on
the outside, ship lap on the end side was cheat
rock over that and then a brick exterior. And I'm

concerned that putting the foam insulation in the walls might
create a moisture problem down the road.

What are your thoughts?

Speaker 6 (06:15):
No, you would be just fine to do that. Don't
encapsulate the house so you know, don't do the attic.
And I'm assuming one hundred years old. It's a block
and base house here and beam, yes, got a cross
base under it. Yeah, so yeah, yeah, don't seal up
the floors, leave the attic where it's breathable and you'll

be fine.

I did add a foam on the floors underside of
the floors, I don't know, about ten years ago. It
seems to oklch, but I don't you know, I don't
know if it's the best, but I did have that
done a few years ago because it got the cold.
But yeah, and there's a little bit of insulation in
the attic, not a lot, but a little.

Well.

As long as you use a breathable insulation like you know,
fiberglass or something like that in the attic, you're fine.
The problem that people are running into where they're getting
these sweaty homes and stuff, is when they encapsulate the
whole house. That's where you get into trouble. But I
will tell you I had USA Insulation come out and

do the foam in the walls on my personal house,
and it's the best thing since sliced bread. It seals
up the air gaps, It insulates, so it lowers your
energy bills. It reduces the noise from outside. I don't
know if anything, especially on a house that's one hundred

years old like that, that you're going to be able
to do. It's gonna save as much energy bills, is
what that insulation in the walls will.

I was thinking the same thing. I just wanted to
make sure that I wasn't going to create a real
problem where the house, you know, has moisture trapped in
it because there's you know, now something in the walls
preventing it from getting out or evaporating.

Speaker 6 (08:14):
Yeah, not, because it'll fill the whole cavity. So it's
not The moisture in the walls. Where the phone creates
problems in houses is actually in the living space of
the house. But like I say, as long as you
keep the attic where it's breathable, you'll be fine. And
you said it's one hundred years old. What year was
it built?

Nineteen twenty eight.

Twenty eight. I grew up in a house built in
nineteen twenty six, and I loved it. That was a
great house. And my grandson came over this week on
last Sunday actually, and he was doing a school project
and had to answer. He asked me, what was your

first job? And back behind that house was horse and
buggy stalls. And my first job was I was fourteen
years old, was to turn those from horse and buggy
into efficiency apartments. And yeah, he said, what's a horse
and buggy? Well, he thought I was talking about horse

and mule. I said, no, the buggy, the thing that
the horse pulls. And you turned that into apartments. I
said yes. He says, opah, that's embarrassing. I said, why
is that embarrassing, Charlie. That's that's just working. That's good stuff.
So but yeah, I love those old buildings.

I do too, and and you know, I don't want
to That's why I was concerned. I don't want to
do anything to damage the integrity of the house because
they just don't build them like that anymore.

And it's no, they don't know.

Like I said, ship lap on the inside and.

Outside wall of the walls, you know, the tuber bores.

But you know they well built.

In fact, the roof on my house is original roof.
If you could believe that, Oh you got a slate,
it's a it's actually a mixture of asbestos and something
other inert material.

That I guess they would not like because it has
its best just but it's it's you know, as long
as you don't disturb it, it's fun and it works.

You know. Those old houses is a great example of that.
We everybody worries about asbestos, but the shake siding that
was on a lot of them, it was added on
them a lot of times back in the fifties. But
the uh, the asbestos that was in that was not

a problem unless you start drilling it or breaking it
or something like that. When it's encapsulated that way, it's fine.

Yeah.

I found a roofer I don't know, ten twelve years ago,
and he said, if you'll just keep people off of it,
that roof will last your lifetime and your children's lifetime.

Looks like, yep, yep, Well, chip, I appreciate it, and yeah,
take care of that old house because they don't build
them like that anymore.

Speaker 8 (11:19):
No, they don't. They tear them down now to build
bigger ones is what they do.

You know. I know, I'm getting off on another tangent here.
But over in Pasadena they have a museum area where
they kept two of the old houses and they added
a couple other houses. And I literally lived three blocks
down the road from that, and I was looking at
the foundation. My guys went over and looked at and

I was just meeting with the managers of it because
they need some leveling done on them. And I was
telling them about growing up in that house and how
everything every all the walls with that ship lap, you
could hit those walls and not have to worry about it.
You could hang pictures and it wasn't an issue. And
in our house there was one closet that was added

and it was just sheet rock, and I happened to
be stupid enough to hit the wall in that closet
and had to do sheet rock repairs because of it.
But everywhere else you were just fine. Well, I'm gonna

Hi? Jim? Well, uh, that's I'm telling years career. I've
you kind of answered a little bit of my question
that I had. I've got a question about as best
as sighting.

Speaker 6 (16:12):
And okay, what to do with it?

You know?

I was afraid to take it off. You know, we
may eventually like to replace it, and I was wondering
if you can't just put you know, uh, new sighting
over the over the best of siding. That's the one
question I have is you know, do you have to
take the old stuff off? And if you do, then
you would does that require a hazardous waste you know

management or something like that? I mean, where do you
take the singles?

Well, here there's there's a couple of things in what
you just said about. Yes, you would have to take
it off to put new sighting on, because in trying
to drive nails through it, it would just shatter and
create a mess behind your new sighting is As far
as what do you do with it, Well, if you

hire a contractor to take it off, yes, they have
to take it to a disposal point. It is considered
has matt it's extremely expensive. And here's a little loophole
that a lot of people aren't aware of. But if
a homeowner takes it off themselves, they're able to take

it to the dump.

Oh wow, Okay, here's a loophole.

Speaker 6 (17:33):
Is a major loophole and as far as I know,
it has not been closed up that that happened with
the stuff years ago, and I've never heard that that's
ever changed. And so you know, you load it in
a what I would recommend is you load it in
a dump trailer. You take it to the dump, and
you dump it out and you're done.

They probably have to tell them that it's has Matt right,
can look at it and see that that is siding.

Speaker 8 (18:02):
Yeah.

The other question, yeah, Well, and the thing is as
long as it's not being broken up. What's what's hazardous
with the asbestos is when it's broken and it it
becomes airborne. That gets in your lungs. That's where the
issue is.

Uh.

When it's solid that way, it's not an issue. So
you're gonna have to wear if you if you do
end up doing this yourself, you absolutely want to be
wearing respirators and and all that kind of stuff to
protect yourself. Uh. But I will tell you I worked
with that siding a lot when I was younger.

Speaker 9 (18:42):
So huh. Well, what the second question I had was
what do I do with the pieces that have you know,
like at the very bottom some of those bottom people,
what do you call those panels or whatever? They are?
A little you know, the Yeah, the shapes. Okay, they've

they've fallen off. How do I put them back on?
Because I'm tempted to drill a hole and he'll put
a woodscrew through it.

Speaker 12 (19:10):
But uhout, if you look at at across the top
of them, there is typically three holes for for putting
nails through them to nail them into place.

Speaker 6 (19:23):
So if they've fallen down, you'll you'll the either the
corner has chipped off or you will see that nail
hole still there.

Speaker 9 (19:34):
Okay, Well, I've got I've got one or two that
that have like broken in half when they fell off.
They hit the you know, they hit the patio.

What do you do with those?

Speaker 6 (19:44):
Yeah? And they are very tough to uh put back
because you got to lift the one above it, and
then it breaks and it becomes a nightmare. There was
an old hardware store. I was out there. It was
a hardware lumberyard, Gone what was the name of that town.

It's out west of Houston, And I just happened to
go in there and I was shocked. They're laying on
their floor was two or three bundles of those shakes
because after they quit making them with asbestos, they made
some four replacement, but nobody carries them anymore. And that

place happened to have two or three bundles of it
sitting there trying to find them. Nowadays you just don't.
That was the first time I'd seen any in probably
forty years.

Speaker 9 (20:43):
Yeah, and I guess it's okay. Just if we want
to do something with the side and just paint over it,
be all right.

Speaker 6 (20:51):
Oh yeah, no problems at all with painting it, and
that just helps seal it in.

Speaker 9 (20:57):
Okay, Okay, one more question, if I can go ahead.
They call it ship lap. We had a roof replaced
a couple of years ago and they said, we have
ship lap, and we had to replace the decking because
they said, we can't get the windstorm, you know, with
they if it has ship lap, you have to have,

you know, solid decking. So I was wondering, why did
they call it ship lap. I've always wondered that.

Speaker 6 (21:25):
I have no idea why they call it that.

Speaker 9 (21:30):
This is what they name. I said, it's just like
maybe because the way they name the pieces of s
fist is call them shakes.

Why they call them shakes?

two five eight seven four. That map Quest thing there,
you know, Before map Quest, we used to a keybook,
key Maps, and it was a book that had all
the different sections and sending crews out. You would copy

pages out of the key map book to attach to
the job packet, so they had directions on how to
get out because you didn't have all these map things available.
When when map Quest came out and we were able
to punch that into the computer and it would print
out a map for us. That was cutting edge stuff
that worked great. Uh, and it made it easier for

the crew to get out, you know. Then it then
it went to where everything was online. Now all we
do is give them an address and they go. But uh,
I'm going to have to take a look at that
app because map Quest was a great thing when it
when it first came out. I'll be interested to see
what what they came up with for for a map

Hello, how you doing today? Thank you for taking my
wonderful I'm having an issue with my plumbing.

Speaker 5 (25:26):
We are on a well.

Speaker 10 (25:28):
I've had a whale checked a couple.

Speaker 11 (25:30):
Of times, but we have air in the lines and
it'll go away and it'll come back. Sometimes we can't
even take a shower because there's so much air rolling
through the lines.

Speaker 10 (25:42):
I've had the sprinkler people come over and they put
a master cut off a master valve.

Speaker 11 (25:48):
Where the backflow preventer is. So I've eliminated the sprinklers.
I can't find a leak. I just I met my end.
This has been going on for about two years. Okay,
do you have any suggestions.

Speaker 6 (26:07):
Well, when the well people come out, what are they
telling you? I mean, the well is solid, You're not
having any issues with it pulling air from the well itself.

Speaker 10 (26:18):
Correct.

Speaker 11 (26:20):
There's a plug on the side of the of the well,
and we turn on the water, and he takes that
plug out and we let it run for five or
ten minutes and there's no air blowing out of that line,
so we put it back on. I have replaced the
little storage tank that stores the water that has air

(26:41):
pressure in it.

Speaker 10 (26:43):
I've replaced that, and.

Speaker 11 (26:46):
I don't know what else to do. It says on
the internet that I may have water leak somewhere, but
I can't find a leak. There's no water bubbling anywhere.

Speaker 10 (26:57):
In my yard or in the house.

Speaker 6 (26:59):
Yeah. Yeah, and then that wouldn't cause air in the
lines like what you're describing. If you had a water leak,
it should be under pressure and there should be water
accumulating somewhere, and that would lower your pressure, but it

(27:19):
wouldn't fill the lines with air like you're having. Typically
that's going to be an issue. And since you've got
a bladder type tank, the tank fills with the water
and then that feeds the house. So there's a couple
of things that if the well is pumping solid water

(27:42):
like like what you just talked about, then it's gonna
be either from in the tank or from the tank
to the cutoff valve the anti siphon that goes to
the house. And honestly, I know you replace that tank,
but I'm thinking there's got to be an issue going

(28:02):
into that somewhere.

Uh oh, you think so?

Speaker 6 (28:06):
It is the bladder in that tank the only thing
that gives you the pressure in your house? Or do
you have a pump as well?

Oh?

That's it.

That's it, okay, And we are holding about sixty five
pounds pressure.

Dang, that's that's good pressure for a for a well system.
I know, right, Sonal, you got me stomped. I'm not
sure where.

I've had the well people over here.

Speaker 11 (28:38):
I've had the plumbers here and nobody can figure it out.

But you know, and it will go away.

Speaker 11 (28:45):
I thought it was a sprinkler system causing it, getting
air in the lines, if we had a leak, if
we had a broken pipe.

And a sprinkler system.

So I had all that fixed, I had that master
valve put on, and we were all happy for about
two days, and then it started up again. And last
night my wife tried to take a shower.

Speaker 10 (29:03):
And it was just mainly blown out air. Could it
possibly be something to do with the hot water heater?

Speaker 6 (29:09):
But I was just getting ready to ask you the
same thing.

Speaker 11 (29:12):
Uh so, But but it's coming from the hot damn
the coal side.

Speaker 10 (29:19):
But it really seemed worse on the on the hot side.

Do you ever get it on the faucets outside or
faucets inside, you knowing sinks or anything?

Speaker 11 (29:29):
Uh, fassi, Faust's outside, Faust's inside.

Speaker 10 (29:33):
I've got to work, I've got to sink.

Yeah, it's not gonna be the water heater that it's
it's going back to the pump system. It's it's got
to be in that tank and pump system that's causing it. Okay,
And it's it's since the since your pressure is from
that bladder in that tank, it's got to have something
to do with that tank and in the bladder pressure.

Speaker 10 (30:01):
Okay, well, I can certainly change it again. I bought
I bought a ao.

Speaker 11 (30:07):
Smith holding tank, and I've heard good and bad things
about a ao Smith, but it was priced right, so
and I did it myself, so you know, and it's
it's about three months old.

Speaker 10 (30:18):
But it didn't change anything. It just kept on going. Yeah,
it's the darnedest thing I've ever I've ever heard of it.
All my friends knows.

Speaker 6 (30:31):
I'm not one hundred percent sure it's going to be
that the tank itself, though, I'm trying to look in
my mind all the different parts that go from the
tank to where it's going in and you know, you
got that pressure regulator switch and all that stuff, and
I'm wondering if there's not something got in there that's
causing the issues.

Speaker 11 (30:52):
Well, I've got water coming from the well into the
tank and then coming out of the tank into the house.
And when it's when it's going into the well.

I'm sorry when it goes into the time.

I got to put you on holes for just a
second because I think I thought of something that you

So let me ask you a quick question. When it's
doing this does it does it do it all the
time or is this just something that's happening once in
a while.

No, it's doing it pretty much all the time. I'll
take that back.

It will stop for maybe a day, and then it
will start.

Speaker 10 (34:52):
I can come outside. We have a pool, and I
can turn on the valve for the for the.

Speaker 11 (34:57):
Pool, get all the air out of high and then
we're good for about a day in the house and
it'll start up again.

Speaker 6 (35:04):
Okay, I'm gonna give you a solution that yep, I'm
gonna give you a solution that should do away with this.
When you have a well, they have two different ways
that you can do it. One is with the pressure
pump like which you have. The other is to have
a holding tank and then you have a pump in
that holding tank to to send the water to the

(35:26):
to the house. It's basically, uh, pressures up the lines
and everything. Make the switch to to do in a
holding tank that way, and you're gonna you're gonna get
rid of this problem because it's always pulling water from
a reservoir going straight into the pump into the house.

(35:48):
But I do think that the issue is gonna be
something in that pressure tank that that you have in
the way stuff is hooked up.

Speaker 11 (35:58):
Okay, let me ask you a questions. So that make
holding tanks with a pressure pump.

Speaker 6 (36:03):
In it, ah, you know, I don't know if they
come with a pressure tank in them or not. I
think you have to choose your own pump.

Speaker 11 (36:14):
So another word, because they just buy a pump and
instead of depending on the pressure from the from the well, Uh,
you have a pump to pump water into the house
by the holding tank.

Speaker 6 (36:27):
Well, we have one at the Deer Least, for instance,
and we have a tank that holds probably I don't know,
three to five hundred gallons something in that range right
in the water. And it's a concrete tank. The water
comes out and you can get plastic ones nowadays, but
the water comes straight from that into a pump that

(36:49):
pressures up all our lines. And that way you're avoiding
this because you've always got water in the tank. Because
I think what's happening is everyone in a while your
well is putting air into that pressure tank that you've got.
I know you've had it tested, but I think every

(37:09):
once in a while it's putting air in there, and
when it does, it's got to get rid of that
air before it can refill it. And I think that's
where we're running into a problem.

I've got a tile floor. There's sixteen years tile and
the set released on part of it in a bathroom.
I heard it one night, pop and you know now
now the tile is sitting on top. The grout is
in good condition. It hasn't cracked or broken or released,

but the set has, so it's got that hollow sound
all across that floor.

Speaker 6 (38:25):
Yep.

Speaker 4 (38:25):
And I was wondering if there's a way to pressure
injecting the POxy into that without having to take the
tile back up and reset it all. Just inject it
to where it glues back down to the foundation.

Speaker 6 (38:41):
Not that I'm aware of. You know, I've tried to
figure out myself how to do something like that. But
the problem is to get it in underneath the tile,
and you would have to get stuck with pulling, yeah
you would, but you got you still got to have
an inlet somewhere to start putting it in.

Speaker 4 (39:04):
And what I've done before fixing concrete with the fox
esus is you drill an inlet, and you drill an
outlet to where the direction you have to foxy to flow,
and you pump until you see it come into the
outlet and you stop there and you move over, and
you do it again, move over, do it again. But
I was wondering if anybody, if you knew of anybody
that actually did that.

Speaker 6 (39:26):
No, No, And the problem is, I mean, where the
grout lines is is going to be a weak spot.
And if you try to drill through the tile itself,
you know, now you got an ugly spot and the tile.

Speaker 4 (39:46):
And you can't fix the tile. You can fix the
grout exactly, any recommendation, tear it up and do it over.

Speaker 6 (39:57):
Your wife wanted new floors anyways, didn't she?

Speaker 4 (40:02):
Probably the ground's good good, because that's the that's the
irritating part about it is the floor looks like it's
always luck. It's just got a bit of a well.

Speaker 6 (40:14):
I will tell you. You may have that hollow sound
for ten years. You may have it for ten days,
no telling. But uh, it's not unusual for once they
do break loose that way for them to still stay
good for years to come. So it's not something I
would get overly anxious about.

Speaker 4 (40:35):
Well that's good because it's been it's been several years
that it since it popped, and I'm sitting on Yeah,
you know, it's just you know, one of those things.
If you could fix it, you fix it. If not,
then you wait till it tells you that it needs
to be replaced.

Well, let your wife start picking out some tile and
then when that time comes you're ready to go, we'll

About the man getting air in his lines. But I
had a couple suggestions of two things I think might
be the problem. The first scenario is if that tank
had a regular galvanized pressure tank on it before it
had a blighter tank, and those tanks are designed to

(50:11):
quarter burst of air into the tank every time the
pump kicks on, So if you put a blighter tank
on it, you're still going to get air. And the
other scenario is is the drop byke. If it's galvanized,
it's probably got some pecker what holes in it above
the water line where it's.

Speaker 6 (50:32):
Left and right, And that's what I keep going back to.
It's it's got to have something where it's putting air
in that TANKU according to earlier discussion with them, he
had a bladder tank and replaced it with a bladder tank,
But that doesn't mean the original tank was bladder.

Speaker 16 (50:52):
Yeah. Well, there's a blued of office twenty foot down
in that well and a galvanized tea and the water
flows past it when the pump's running, and when the
pump shuts off, that goes out of that flapper and
drains out of that pipe. So if he has a
check valve at the whale seal. If there's a brass
check valve, it'll have a nipple with your pressure switch,

(51:12):
and then it'll have another, uh like a Strader type valve,
like an air deal for your tire. If he has that,
then that's what it's sucking that allows that water to
drain out of that bleeder office. But if it's not that,
it's got to be he's got to have holes in
his drop fight.

Speaker 6 (51:29):
Yeah, And that's what I keep thinking, is he's got
to have something that's that's uh yeah, Okay, that makes sense.
All right, Well, thank you, thank you running again seven

my question.

Like your last collar, I I think I have a
solution for your collar with air and the pipe. So
I had the same problem with the bladder tank. And
what I found out was that the the switch, the
pressure switch from the factory comes set. It cut on
at twenty eight, cut off at forty eight. So in

(52:19):
my thinking, I just wanted to raise the pressure of
the tank up to fifty two to fifty three pounds
like it is in the city. And this fella says
that his is at sixty five.

Speaker 6 (52:30):
So obviously, and then I've never heard of it. I've
never heard of a well system being that high.

Speaker 13 (52:36):
But yeah, right, so you can set it as high
as you want to go on the cut off. But
obviously he hasn't reset the cut on switch. So what
it's doing is the water is out running the supply
before the pump cuts on, so you end up with
the air inside the bladder pushing out about the time
the pump cuts on, so you get that burse of air.

(52:58):
And if he's had air back into it, then that's
the problem. He's actually adding air into his own system.
It's really simple. I fixed mine by increasing the cut
on pressure, so.

Speaker 10 (53:10):
It comes on that mine.

Speaker 13 (53:12):
Mine comes on and shuts off at fifty five comes
on at forty. So now I eliminated my air and lines.

Speaker 6 (53:20):
Yeah, so he needs to kick his up to probably
come on at fifty.

Speaker 13 (53:23):
Then, yeah, he probably needs to lower the pressure down
to about fifty five. That's more than enough to blow
the hat off your head anyway, So he probably needs
to lower that pressure down and increases cut on pressure.
So in other words, they'll come on around forty yep.

Speaker 4 (53:41):
And I will keep far above his pipe.

Speaker 6 (53:44):
Well, Richard, I appreciate that. Yep, yes, sir, Thank you sir.
That's the great thing about doing a show like this.

Shed building sixteen by sixteen. I'm building here in my
backyard to replace an old shed that's about to collapse.
And I've used tex shield on the roof and put
shingles on it. I had some tex shield left over,
and in between the two before studs on the walls,
I went on sixteen inch centers. I thought, we'll shoot
you know, I got three or four sheets left over.

(54:33):
I was going to insulate it and put a window
unit in the thame uh for the for the bottom store,
I put a ceiling in it and all that uh
with the tech shield to go in between the studs
right there, and you know, just cut it like fourteen
and a half inches wide and pop it in between
the studs and put a little screw on the side
and hold it from falling out, and then put the

(54:55):
insulation on top of that. Is that a good idea
or it's because I started reading the face sing on
this stuff, It says it requires an air gap. Right,
Having the insulation right on top of it may reduce
the efficiency of the radiant barrier, But would it eliminate it?

Speaker 8 (55:10):
Would that be a bad idea?

Speaker 6 (55:13):
On a single layer that way, it virtually eliminates it. Oh,
if you if you run at if you have a
multi layer radiant barrier that has a thermal break in
the middle, Uh, then you can sandwich it in between materials.
But the the text shield uses a single layer because

(55:34):
it is designed to be up on the roof deck
where it's open space.

Then below it, right, would the tex shield be as
effective as some are thirteen in the wall?

Speaker 6 (55:45):
No?

Oh? I'm doing great. I got a question for you.
I'm refinishing a heergla style porch covering, and I had
a couple of boards in the center of the thing
that we're warping, and so I pulled it off, I
started working at it and looking at it, and it
turns out this thing is heavily painted white with outdoor paint.
And in pulling a couple of boards off, it turns

(56:37):
out this whole structure is made out of rough cut
two by ten inch theeter boards. And so I'm trying
to get this back to the original cedar look. And
so I've been running through material through a planer. The
it's roughly the size of the triangle that's about the
deepest part of it is sixteen feet and the widest

(56:59):
part of it thirty feet. And it looks like what
they did is they used twenty foot long boards and
then you know, cut it at that thirty feet and
they join them together with some kind of pins. And
because they painted it, I think I got a lot
of rot at those intersections where the boards meet the structure.
So first question is any suggestions on getting the paint

(57:24):
off other than running it through a plane or sanding
and anything it would be quicker and easier. And then
the second one is is there something that I could
put on the boards themselves that wouldn't allow it to
rot like it did? Would you know, let the moisture through,
but also allowed to keep that nice would finish.

Speaker 6 (57:43):
Okay, there's two things. One use a stripper. They make
liquid strippers that you can put on in that paint
will just bubble up then and you take a putty
knife and scrape it off and you can literally pressure
wash off what's left. You may have to in some
areas put a second coat, you know, based on where

(58:06):
you're seeing stuff. But yeah, that it definitely is available
to do it that way.

Speaker 7 (58:12):
Okay.

Speaker 6 (58:13):
Then it's as far as keeping uh no, I don't.
I haven't found any that don't work, so gotcha and
the iss and truthfully, there's not that many brands out
there because it is a toxic chemical and you know
all the liability nowadays with everything we do. But as

(58:38):
far as protecting that wood after it's cleaned up and
everything ready seal, it's an oil based product. It soaks
down into the wood keeps it from taking on moisture,
and that will protect it from taking on the moisture
that causes the rot.

Yeah, continuing on with the theme about inflating old structures. Yes,
I have a like a ten unit apartment building that's
about I guess four thousand square feet per floor that
was built back in the nineteen forties, and my floor

is on the first floor. I've been getting some of
the apartments that have been getting pretty bad dry rot.
I suspect it because now we have ac inside and
there's no insulation anywhere in the building, and so I've
been trying to figure out what might be the best
most economical solution to try and help keep that from happening.

Is the dry watt let me try to spit that
out again. Is the dry rot to the point where
you're going to have to take things apart to do repairs.

Yeah, And a couple of the apartments I already had
to tear out the whole sub floor you know, I
went back and the ones where I did that, I
went back with Vantech and then okay.

The original was I guess three quarter tongue and groove
planks yep, and then hardwood on top of it. So
I hate to lose those hardwood force if I can.

Oh yeah, yep, Well what the insulation. You know that
this is a non expansive foam insulation. It would fill
that cavity so that you don't have that moisture build up.
And you are correct. When we added air conditioning inside
and we've got the heat outside and the humidity down
on corpus, you know, I'll sweat inside that open wall. Uh.

So yeah, I would give USA Insulation a call and
let them take a look at it, because they can
put this in without having to tear walls out and stuff.

And and you would recommend doing that underneath the uh
underneath the building. It's it's appearing beams, so like you know,

Just I tipic, well, this this product is, this product
is for walls only under the building. I typically tell
people don't insulate it because it really is not going
to make a hill of beans difference on the on
the utility bills. And it was designed to be left

that can be handled with ventilation and such, rather than
having to spend all the money on insulation that can
cause wood rot I down down underneath, you would have

I'm calling in reference to my AC unit. And last
year they came out and they put they reach replaced
the UV light because they said it had some mold
on it. So this year also the bulb went in it,
so they replaced the bulb at no charge. But also

they changed this year like about two weeks ago, so
they said we needed a capacitor. They changed the capacitor.
And also they're saying that we need to replace the
thermostat with a disconnect box, a sixty m disconnect box.

(01:16:18):
And they're saying that with the inspection that they did
just did, they're saying the unit is ten years old,
it needs a break a box. It doesn't have a
hard store protection kit or a surge protection It needs
to have one of those to help it last longer.

So you know, I'm just calling.

Also, the other week when they came to the free
on was low, so they're saying that it also has
a leak with the free on. So I just I
listened to you often and I just wanted to get
your take on it.

The first thing I will tell you is a lot
of the stuff that you just mentioned, it should not
be that you need these things. It should be these
are things that we can recommend that will help extend
the life of your air conditioning system. The UV lights
and stuff. Unless somebody has reasons to have those, they're

(01:17:34):
typically not needed. The mold inside the unit. They use
that a lot to sell people those lights. If you've
got mold growing in your unit, then there's something wrong
that needs to be addressed, and the light is not
what should be addressing it. We need to address it

(01:17:54):
with what's wrong with the unit that's allowing mold to grow.
The hard start kit and some of those other things
that you were you know, the capacity, Yes, they wear
out and they do have to be replaced a hard
start kit, and they make hard start and soft start kits.
If a system starts having a problem firing off when

(01:18:16):
it gets older, that way, you put a hard start
kit on it. If you have a generator, then you
put a soft start kit. But as far as being
low on coolant, you know, if you have a leak
and you're losing coolant, it does need to be found

(01:18:37):
and addressed. How many pounds of coolant did they say
they had to add and let me guess it was
two pounds, wasn't it.

Speaker 2 (01:18:44):
I really don't recall how much they added, Okay, I
just know it had a leak and then maybe about
a couple of weeks to a month later, they that
they needed They said they needed to add more.

Speaker 3 (01:19:00):
As as far as those protection the surge, it's the
surge protection called the soft.

Speaker 6 (01:19:09):
No that a surge protector is to protect the unit
from a power surge. Uh So the soft start kit
is is for when you have a generator, because generators
don't have the constant power that a regular landline would have.
It helps their union to start. But but if you

(01:19:31):
don't have a generator, uh I don't you know, I
wouldn't worry about that part of it. What's going on
on on the air conditioning industry nowadays is everybody is
trying to sell all these different items when they come

(01:19:52):
out to look at your house. And in some cases
we my company offers some of those as well. But
my guy, you're under strict orders. You're not offering this
stuff unless they actually need it. And if you go
to some of the seminars, No, ma'am, I'm a Texas company.

(01:20:12):
What area Florida are you in? By the way, branded Okay,
I did used to live in the Jacksonville area when
I was a young kid, only about four years. But
so what I would tell you is a lot of

(01:20:33):
that preventative maintenance stuff or preventative stuff that they were
telling you, I wouldn't worry about it. The biggest one
that I'm hearing is if you have a coolant leak,
a free on leak that does need to be addressed,
not just by putting free on in, but find the
leak and let's get that fixed. The next thing they're

(01:20:55):
going to tell you is your system is ten years
old and it's out of warranty, so it's time to
replace that unit. It is not. Yeah, those systems are
designed to last fifteen to twenty years. And if that
system is still working, who cares about the warranty?

Okay? Can I ask you a question as far as
the thermocy that like my thermostat, they're saying, oh, that
was the.

Speaker 6 (01:21:22):
One I kept trying to remember there. Unless that thermostat
quit working, there is no reason to replace it.

Speaker 3 (01:21:31):
Yeah, because I was concerned too, because they did go
in and they changed like two or three of my outlets,
and they also said that, you know, a couple of
more needed to be replaced. So I'm just connecting all
of this my daughter, she actually had gotten a service
contract with these people, and while I was away, because

I do come to New York, you know from time
to time, So she purchased the service run Track because
she they were telling her something and she was saying
that it wasn't working and she needed to get it fixed.
So you know, I'm a very stern person. I did things.

got a twenty four hundred square foot L shaped house.
It's a Perry home down in League City, and so
there is a long I'm on a corner lot, so

rectangle and then the side, the back of the house

L shape comes along the street as well.

In the master bedroom, I've got about a three inch
differential over that twenty feet drop to the street side.

had to get that business taken care of. So you
got a foundation issue. And typically on corner lots you
have this problem because they piled the dirt up from
the streets when they're putting it in, and so you
got a lot of unsettled dirt there. What are you

(01:31:50):
looking for? Well, the first thing I'm gonna tell you
is call my company, do West Foundation Repair. But I
will I will tell you some of the things you
got to be aware of. One, if they're not part
of the Foundation Repair Association, the National Foundation Repair Association,
they're not worth hiring because they're not keeping up with
what's going on in the industry. If they don't pull permits,

(01:32:12):
don't bother with them. If they haven't been in business
at least five years. If you don't want to warranty,
they're fine to go with. But I can tell you.
Foundation repair companies come and go. About a third of
them go out of business every year and pop up
under new names. As far as they are techniques. Where

(01:32:34):
you're at down there, it's probably going to be a
in fact, I shouldn't say probably, you're going to be
a concrete press pile. In that black gumbo clay soils
you have there. You can look at a grill perod,
you can look at a helical, but but those are
going to be the system I would take a look at.

Yeah, everything's you know when you cut a when you
cut a fence post hole down here, it cuts it clean.
You have to actually widen it to get a fence
post in, you know, the gumbo's and it's just.

Yeah, And that's exactly what the concrete press pile was
developed for. So that would be the systems I would
tell you to take a look at. But obviously I'm

dries up and the water never gets really back to it.

Yep, that's and that's that's the problem.

And I'm assuming it's way too late to put water
under it.

If it's three inches, yes, typically if it's only like
an inch or so, I would tell you water. But
at three inches, no, it's it's too far gone.

And and you guys would rather have it dry to
work on than black gumbo digging out.

Actually, we do it either way. I mean, while it's raining,
we can't do it. But other than that, and that
