Air Venture. That's the air show I go to each
year for the last seven years. And uh, it's it's
always fun, but it's it's been a little different this year.
They got the big fires in Canada and Minnesota, and
earlier this week the smoke was so thick visibility was
down to a mile or less, so that was not

(03:46):
seeing anything. The show itself opens up on Monday, so
it was delaying some of the planes and things coming in.
But everything's coming in nice and and rapidly right now,
which makes this the busiest airport in the world. During
the week of the air show, they'll have like fifteen

(04:07):
thousand planes here. Literally, it is a bunch over seven
hundred thousand people. And I'm one of the I don't
know if it's forty five thousand, sixty five thousand whatever
campers out here. So and I always have fun doing
the show from here because I set up boondockn no power,

(04:32):
no electricity, and no water. I use the holding tanks
on the RV. I bring a generator so I can
do the show the rest of the time. I don't
run the power. I just run it for the show.
But it's always a good time here in Wisconsin. And
before you start saying, oh, it must be nice to
be up there where it's cool, it's cooler today. I

(04:54):
mean right now it's eighty three degrees here going to
a high of eighty five, But earlier in the w
it was ninety six, feeling like it was over one
hundred degrees. And again, I have no air conditioning. When
you're in the Boondock area. So yes, it gets a
little bit warmish sometimes, but I'm here to take calls

email question. This comes from Rudy Ruby out of Houston,
certified licensed roof inspector needed. I recently changed homeowners insurance carrier.
They are now telling me that my roof is thirty
percent granular loss, et cetera, and because of that they
will drop coverage if not fixed. By fixed, I am

(06:00):
guessing they actually mean to replace. Roof was replaced summer
of twenty nineteen, no hurricanes, no hailstorms that I remember
since then to cause damage they claim my roof shows
seems I can appeal their findings, but need a bonafide

(06:21):
roof inspector to give her her opinion. I did not
find online that new roofs can shed I think what
I did find online is what it should say. Roofs
can shed ten to fifteen percent of their granules within
the first year, as loose minerals wash away. Normal annual

(06:45):
aging produces minimal loss. So I'm hoping to show that
my roof actually has much less actual granular loss than
what they are saying. For example, they say thirty percent
after seven years versus ten percent after seven years. Actual
loss given that year first year loss is ten to

(07:08):
fifteen percent industry average. So that's what I'm after. Would
appreciate any advice, suggestions, recommendations. Thank you, Okay, Well, Ruby,
The first thing I'm going to tell you is just
because the insurance company says it doesn't mean it's right.
And I'm going to give you a quick story before

(07:29):
I go into an answer. First property I ever owned
was a four plex and it was a little four
unit apartment thing that I bought when I was nineteen
years old. Insurance was with all State, and I got
a letter in the mail saying they were going to

(07:50):
cancel the insurance unless I scraped the building and repainted
it because the paint was peeling something fierce. I had
to call them up and I said, what paint, It's
a stucco building. What you guys were looking at was
the waves in the stucco, And yes I did get

(08:11):
that one reversed, So you can argue with the insurance
company and get something reversed. Now, dealing with the roof
situation that you're dealing with, I'm not sure I would
go hire an engineer to come out and give me
an opinion on that. And here's why. If you call

(08:34):
the manufacturer, they're going to send somebody out to inspect
it anyways, and they can probably give you something to
give to the insurance company that they came out and
inspected it and found that it only had X number
of granular loss or that's the way the roof should be.
You know, whatever they can give you, But they're the

(08:57):
manufacturer and it's going to be pretty tough for the
insurance company adjuster to make an argument with that. So
that would be the road I would head down with this. Now,
your secondary thing would be where you could give Guardian
Roof Systems a call and let them come out and
take a look at it. You can call them at

But realistically, I think my call would go to the
manufacturer and deal with it that way. Because if it
is indeed losing the kind of granules that the insurance
company said it's losing, well, the roof, the roof manufacturer,

the shingle manufacturer probably owes you some shingles and somebody
to put them on. Uh. Anyways, that's my two cents,
that's the direction I would head with it. Got a

wire reconnection. And I'm assuming what he's trying to reconnect
is the ground wire. You need to give Right Touch

ground wire that's just basically attached with a clamp to
the ground rod. If that's all that came loose, that

is something you could easily do yourself if you wanted to.

Hey, thanks for taking my call. Quick question, I've got
mold in the whole bathroom on the ceiling above the shower.

Speaker 11 (16:10):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (16:11):
I attribute that to the fact that the exhaust fans
stopped working a long time ago. Does you just put
standard drywall in the ceiling? Ors that need like a
green rock kind of water resistant drywall in the ceiling
of the shower, The.

Speaker 5 (16:26):
Whole the whole bathroom should be green rock. Now, a
lot of a lot of contractors don't do it that way,
but absolutely, yeah, do do a green rock because that
is a moisture resistant basically, and it comes in green
and blue. It depends on the manufact.

Speaker 4 (16:45):
Okay, just a PVA primer on top of it, and
then texture on top of.

Speaker 5 (16:49):
That, yes, sir, Yeah, just a regular primer and then
texture and paint.

Speaker 4 (16:55):
Sounds good.

Figure out how to handle a four by of green rock.

Yeah, how old the house is it? Okay. The reason
I bring that up typically at that age has probably
been painted a couple of times. So typically what I
would tell you is prime the sheet rock first before
you texture it. Then texture it and primary again. Okay,

(17:23):
and that'll help to match it in better.

You bet take care And oh, I guess I'll throw
this in yeah, because he was saying handle a four
byte sheet of sheet rock. A lot of times people
don't have a way to transport it either. You can
rent those little trucks from home depot for like twenty

(17:54):
bucks to haul stuff home that way. Now, carrying it
up in the house and handling it up there adds
a little bit different story. But I will give you
a little trick because when I was fourteen, I was
redoing some horse and buggy stalls into being efficiency apartments,

(18:16):
which are just one red, one room apartments that have
a little kitchenette in the corner, a separate bathroom. And
that's the whole thing. I mean, that's it. And I
was hanging sheet rock on the ceilings by myself. Four
by eight sheets, and you make a t pole basically
take a two by four and then put a two

(18:38):
by four across the top. You got to use some
braces coming down, so it looks like a big push broom.
And you have it cut to the length so that
you put it at one end of that sheet rock
to hold it up against the ceiling, and you climb
up on a ladder on the other end, hold it up,
put your head up there, and start screwing the screw

(19:00):
in to hold it in place. So you can do
it by yourself. But I'm here to tell you it
is a whole lot easier to have some help and
take two people to put that sheet of sheet rock
up than it is to do it by yourself. But
that's anyways, it can be done by yourself if you

(19:20):
have to. Got a question seven one three two point

heights and Alan, This is Jim. How can I help you?

Ah, I'm doing all right. Got a question about my
long thermostatic central AC now the analog model, and I've
been having problem all year with it, and what would happen?
It's eighty degrees and I go, well, it's a little
warming here. I'm gonna turn Derek and Destroano slowly move

(19:55):
the level down until it comes on. But unfortunately I'm
pulling it down like half inch, and then when it
does come on later on, I'll go, let's get a
little cold in here, and there'll be seventy seventy four degrees.
I turned it up basically, I was turning their conditioner
on manually, I guess. And then yeah, all but then

(20:18):
all of a sudden it started working normally. Where you know,
I was eighty degrees or seventy nine. I go, oh,
it's a little warm. I would just barely touch it
eighth of an inch down and it would come on.
So I guess the question is, is there some contacts
it got oxidized and it just happened to clean itself off.

(20:40):
For yeah, it happened.

Speaker 5 (20:44):
It can be that. It can be that just it
got dirty in there. It can be as minor, as
you know, a spider went in there and put some
spider webs or something like that. So typically what I
would tell you, especially after what you just describe, I
would shut the air conditioner off, and I would move

(21:04):
that lever up and down to clean off the sensors there.
Because as you're moving that little lever, yes, there is
a uh contact strip basically behind there, and it probably
just got dust on it or something over the years.
You clean it off a little bit and it'll it'll

(21:25):
probably start working just fine again. It's kind of like
the knob on a stereo system, you know that they'll
start getting a little dirty and hang up there.

Speaker 2 (21:35):
Oh yeah, oxidized. Yeah, well, I mean, is there any
way I could just wipe it with the raggers? At
some you can't really get to like that.

Speaker 5 (21:44):
You're really not going to get to it like that.

Speaker 2 (21:47):
And okay, well, I guess the problem. You said move
it up and down. That helped clean it. And now
that's why I cleaned it. I was having to move
it up and down so much and eventually and I
do have a bunch of the spider webs everywhere.

Speaker 5 (22:04):
Well, and I hate to do this too. Gallon, but
that music man, I gotta take a quick break for news,

Hey, welcome, thanks for taking my call. Got a question
for you on the toilet. So I've got a you know,
a toilet that seemed to be My wife said, oh,
it's running. So I took the top lid off and
I looked and along the back of the wall it's

(25:19):
got some well it's wet, you know, and it's messing
up the sheet rock. And this top also had a
small crack to the side of the lid on the
far right side in the back. So I'm wondering what
the heck is going on.

Speaker 5 (25:40):
The what was the crack in? Was it in the
tank part or the lid the lid? Okay? How old
a toilet is it?

Speaker 12 (25:53):
Oh, probably twenty years twenty five it's.

Speaker 5 (25:56):
Old, okay, and a reading I'm asking at the reason
you're probably seeing mold behind it. When it's warm in
the house and you bring cold water in there, it'll
cause the tank to sweat. Okay. And if that tank
is real close to the wall, it'll get that wall

(26:17):
where the humidity level is up and it'll start to
mold back there. One of your easiest fixes, and it
would get rid of the crack in that lid, would
be to replace the toilet because the new toilets, the
tank is smaller and it would be further off the
wall where you wouldn't have that issue anymore.

Speaker 12 (26:39):
Okay, Well that's when I was okay, So that answers
the question. So it's nothing with the inside mechanical on it.

Speaker 5 (26:52):
Well, the running really yeah, the running of the toilet, yes,
that would be the mechanicals inside. But the sweating on
the outside and the cracking, no, okay.

Speaker 12 (27:04):
And you think it's that sweating that's causing the wet
sheet rock yep, yep, that makes sense. So time to
go for a new toilet.

Speaker 5 (27:14):
Huh it is. Take take your wife shopping, and I'm
gonna tell I'm gonna tell you there's a huge range
of toilets out there nowadays. Uh. You know, you got
some that are just dirt cheat like seventy nine dollars.
You got others that I mean, you could spend two
thousand dollars on a toilet if you wanted to which

(27:37):
is ridiculous, but uh, the brands I would tell you
to look at would be a Coohler yep, American standard.
And if you want to hire in toilet, you look
at the.

Toto okay, And then.

Speaker 12 (27:56):
Can I just go and well, uh, one size will
fit all as far as working with that hole into
the ground or.

Speaker 5 (28:06):
Whatever, Yeah, that that's all standards, so you shouldn't have
any issues with that, you know. And then if you
got the space, then you have to decide do you
want just the bowl itself, you want the round one
or the one that's a little oblong where it sticks
out a little bit further.

Speaker 13 (28:24):
Yeah, uh okay.

Speaker 5 (28:27):
Now here's a big one though that that you want
to consider how high do you want the toilet to sit?
Because they you know, you got the original that are
just factory that that are pretty low to the ground,
or you can get a mid heith or a handicap heth,
and depending on how easy it is getting up will

(28:48):
depend on how high you want that thing sitting.

Speaker 12 (28:52):
Okay, and okay, yep, that's a good one. And then
in terms of so I want to do this myself, okay,
need a ring, and I need uh.

Speaker 13 (29:08):
I guess.

Speaker 5 (29:11):
That if you're gonna do it yourself, you'll need to
get the wax ring. And you typically need a new
bolt set. Now, some of the higher end toilets come
with them, but most of them don't. And the bolt
set is just the brass bolts that come up and
you put the nuts on the top to tighten it
down to the floor. Uh uh uh. And then if

(29:32):
you're gonna if you're going to calk around the toilet, yeah,
you'll need to get some calking for that.

Speaker 12 (29:38):
Okay, good deal. Well, hopefully we have a good afternoon.

Now have you ever pulled a toilet before?

Speaker 13 (29:49):
I have not.

Speaker 5 (29:51):
Okay, then here's here's a trick that people don't really
know about.

Speaker 1 (29:56):
You.

You know, you flush it to get all the water out,
and but you got to shut the water off first
flush it, but then take a five gallon bucket of
water and dump in there into the bowl real quick,
and that will typically flush out more of the water,
so there's only a little bit of water left in
the p trap of the toilet itself, so you got

less mess coming out.

Okay, awesome, Well that's great, Well, thank you so much.

one of the things that causes a lot of problems
with plumbing fixtures is the hard water. You got a
lot of mineral deposits in the water, and it builds
up on the shower heads and the faucets and all
that kind of stuff. It will build up inside that
toilet and cause problems with it as well, not just
the on and off switch, but also in the bowl

(31:28):

filtration system. Sometimes it's a water softener reverse osmosis. They

I have a three year old house that has a
uh the living room area has at a sixteen foot ceiling.

Speaker 6 (34:51):
It's just a.

Speaker 16 (34:52):
Pitch and the attic is only about a foot six
so there's no there may be some insulation there, but
the choiste Anyhow, The problem I'm having is that about
every year and a half, mildew accumulates on the ceiling
in a certain spot. Because I understand that the air
conditioning comes on, it cools.

Speaker 12 (35:15):
The hot air.

Speaker 16 (35:16):
They MiG and it causes moisture and have that you
can almost see every joist. Uh, there's milded growing growing
on the sheet rock on the outside of it where
every joice is because the heat of the sun just
bakes that through the roofs through the joist and that
you know, it does the same thing hits the cool

(35:37):
air and it starts building up or growing milion. Is
there anything that can be done about that?

Speaker 5 (35:45):
And I need to understand exactly where this was again,
So is it on a ceiling or is it on
a wall?

Speaker 16 (35:53):
It's on the ceiling, Okay, up the very pitch of
the ceiling.

Speaker 5 (35:57):
Yeah, so it's a cathedral type ceiling then yeah, yeah,
and your roof deck is on one side of that
two buy up there and your sheet rocks on the other.

Speaker 17 (36:08):
Yep.

Speaker 5 (36:09):
Okay, the answer is yes, there are things that can
be done. There should be insulation in there, and it
sounds like there's not in part of it, or the
insulation has settled. And that's probably the bigger thing that's
happened is there was probably some insulation there that has

(36:29):
settled and slid down a little bit. If they put
in a fiberglass bat type insulation and didn't staple it
into place, it'll slide down and create that little space
up there. And that space can be anywhere from four
inches to about ten inches a lot of times, and

(36:49):
that's where that heat change happens and it'll start to milde.
So a couple of things that can be done. One wall,
if you ever get a new roof put on, you
can put a radium barrier, the energy Q radium barrier
under the shingles that stops the heat transfer. That will help.

(37:13):
Something that you can do immediate though, would be to
have the folks from USA Insulation come out and they
would have to drill a hole into the sheet rock there.
But they can inject foam in there and fill that cavity,
so you don't have that issue any longer. And the
foam insulation that they use gives it an R value

(37:35):
of five point one per inch, and so you can
run that R value up pretty good. And even if
there is insulation in there, the the insulation can get
encapsulated with this foam and it'll it'll help you out tremendously.

Speaker 16 (37:59):
All right, What about where the joist are. It appears
that it's straight like singles the joist and then the
sheet rock, so the heat is transferred directly from the
roof through the joist and you see a line yep,
right where every joiste is. Is there anything that can
be done about that?

Speaker 5 (38:19):
Not a whole lot. I'm really guessing that there's not
much for insulation in there with that happening, and by
adding insulation, I think you'll minimize that because the the
two by material, although yes, it can conduct some heat.
When you've got a two by six or a two
by eight or ten or whatever that is up there,

(38:43):
that itself has an insulating factor, the heat's not going
to travel through that board that readily, and once you
have good insulation around it, that should solve that problem.

Okay, all right, we'll good, So go holds and have
home inflation put in in between the joys.

very happy with the dealer. They're trying to do everything
they can, but we've got this new regulation down here
in Chema that these units have to be raised up
above the foundation. Right, so they think they use these
scene it blocks and seen it favor. They kind of

tied it down with Yeah, with not much thicker than
a luminum foil. And it's a little noisy outside. Not
that it just hums like craving inside the house, they
cut a hole inside the wall and they were going
to just fill it with, you know, foam.

Well, the lead lines are wrapped pretty well and they
go directly into the you know, the wall, right and
you can you can put your hand around them. You
can fill a vibration. And actually I put my my
foot on on the base of the unit. I can

(45:23):
kind of feel a vibration and it truly resonates all
the way up. It's a two story house that goes
all the way up the wall into a guest bedroom upstairs.
It's really loud up there.

Speaker 5 (45:36):
Yeah, okay, so yeah, I really shouldn't be vibrating that much.

Speaker 11 (45:42):
Uh.

Speaker 17 (45:42):
And it kind of pulses a little bit, you know
it kind of I don't know if it's a bad
unit or well.

Speaker 5 (45:53):
The question I would have would be if the fan
motor is out of balance, and if it is, that
would be causing what you're describing.

Speaker 17 (46:04):
Uh, put a level. I put a level on the
unit in it it's on point.

Speaker 5 (46:11):
Yeah, But that doesn't mean the fan blades can't be
out of balance. It's kind of like a ceiling fan
where you gotta adjust them sometimes and and even on
these units, every once in a while you gotta do that.
So I really and I know I got to take
a break here, but I really think that's adjusting and
and uh and and it's going to be in that

(46:34):
outside unit. Vibration is going to be typically the fan motor. Uh.
Secondary it can be in the compressor, but that would
be really really abnormal for that to be the cause
of this. Almost always it's the fan motor. So okay, Uh,
with that, I'm gonna have to let you go. We
gotta take a break.

and I had to go too quick at the end.
There there is because you said this was a new
system that was put in. There is another thing, and

(49:42):
this is probably even more likely than the vibration from
the motor if they kept the old line set. That's
the copper lines that go from the outside unit to
the inside unit. New HVAC systems operate higher pressure and
different flow rates than the old ones did, and that

(50:05):
can create the vibrations as well. And i'll because you
mentioned that it was doing it so much more up
at the top than it was at the bottom and stuff,
I'll bet that's what it is. They got missed mismatched
sizing on the pipes for the new operating system that

(50:27):
they put in, and it's common where they try to
utilize the same pipes so they don't have to run
a new line set. There's but there's the downsides to
that is the sizing doesn't match properly sometimes and if
there was any old oil left in the system from

(50:47):
the old air conditioning system, that can cause problems as well.
So you may want to talk to them about having
that checked also, and you may end up having to
get somebody else out there if this continues. Instead of
dealing with the ac company themselves, get the manufacture involved.

(51:09):
That'll get it taken care of seven one three, two,

Question is I had a new union put in my
house last year with a matching heater.

I keep my house at seventy seven degrees pretty much
year round. What was the ideal humidity?

Speaker 5 (51:46):
Well, if you're keeping it up at seventy seven, your
humidity level is probably going to be a little bit
higher than if you were trying to keep it down
at say seventy two. I would guess that your humidity's
probably running sixty sixty five.

Speaker 13 (52:05):
Okay, well it's a little bit lower than that. It's
fifty five, so.

Speaker 5 (52:10):
Fifty five that you're you're in you're in a good
you're in good range then good range.

Speaker 13 (52:15):
Okay, yeah, okay, okay. Well, always listen to you, and
you're give it you should give out good info.

you know, you're typically looking for. If you're in the fifties,
you're golden. That that's a great place. If you're up
in the seventies, that's when your humidity levels are high.

If you get down below forty five, you're actually going
to start feeling it in your skin, dry skin and
things like that. So you can get the humidity level
too low where you're not comfortable. But usually that in
the fifties. Uh, that's anywhere from fifty to out to

(53:26):
sixty five. That's usually a good range to to get
the humidity levels down to in your home.

I have just like you got previously. I have a
cathedral ceiling, but I have a roof on top of
that cathedral ceiling, and it's up there. It's probably it's
a big room, so it's probably up there above the
ten foot plate height. It's probably up there about another
eleven themes, okay, and it's Bill doing at the very

(54:47):
top yep. And I have the Allttleman and Paul Morsherbary
on the very on the deck, and I had our
thirty installation on there, and I went and put another
arts one too on top of that. Trying to resolve
the problem. Hainted, it kills it and it came back.

(55:08):
And my question is in that situation, uh, could it
be the air condition that when we turn the fans
on in that tall ceiling and you can see the
blow down, it's like still hot air, hot.

Speaker 5 (55:25):
Air, hot in that room and hangs.

Speaker 6 (55:31):
Up here, should I raise the air condition dutch with
that help farther to the top of the roof, top
of the.

Speaker 5 (55:44):
Are they in the cathedral ceiling?

Speaker 6 (55:45):
Now they're they're only about four foot up.

Speaker 5 (55:50):
Okay, I don't think you necessarily have to raise them up.
What you might consider doing is taking some deflectors and
putting on a couple of the vents to send the
air headed up that way and see if that doesn't
circulate it enough.

Speaker 6 (56:07):
Well, I did that, and I turned I slipped the
vents around and turned them up. There's two vents in there.

Speaker 4 (56:15):
There.

Speaker 6 (56:15):
You probably ten by fifteen or fourty whatever they're good
size is. And the air system is right there close.
But it's the only place in the house that I
get mildew growing. And I can't figure it out for
the life of me. You know, I've done everything I
thought I could do.

Speaker 5 (56:30):
Yeah. Well, when I say a deflector, I'm not talking
about the the the vent loovers and stuff. I'm talking
about they make a clear plastic deflector that you can
put on there that would send the air in a
different direction. It's an ad it's an add on to

(56:51):
the to the vent that may help it. But in
this cathedral ceiling, because you have all that other stuff
up there, is there attic space there or is it?
The roof deck is on the same rafters up there, It.

Speaker 6 (57:10):
Has about five or six feet to the to the
to the rafters from the top of the signing joys
to two ten singing joys up to the rafts probably
five to six feet.

Speaker 5 (57:22):
Okay, so you have access to get up there, really.

Speaker 6 (57:25):
Yeah. The ridge lines are lined up on top of
each other. That's like I said. I I went ahead
and put additional insulation on top of what I had. Yeah,
I figure, well, maybe between the two by tens it's
getting a little moisture in there because the bad inslation
wasn't sitting in there just right yep, you know, as

(57:46):
tight as to be. So I went ahead and did
it solid all the way across there, and I still
had this problem.

Speaker 5 (58:01):
Yeah, if the insulation was put draped over the top
of it and there was still a void there, that
void still would effect.

Speaker 6 (58:13):
But well it's it's it's solid insulation with the two
bout ten wrap sue and Joyce inslation. You know, it
had our thirty on there, and then I put this
on top of all that. Yeah, so I mean it
it's you know. And another thing is the attic is uh,

(58:39):
I bought electric electric turbeted. I'm gonna try that to
see that helps, you know, and add that it has
rich vent and uh yep and sob venting. Yeah, but
I'm going to add that anyhow, See the additional vetting
can help, uh cool that addict yeah, or something is

(59:01):
only I figures the cold air is getting in there,
and it is it is a cold moisture yep.

Speaker 5 (59:09):
Yeah. And it's just got me that you've got dead
air space up you know, dead air up there in
the in that ceiling. You know, they used to build
houses with vents in the ceilings. That's the reason. If
you go into houses that were built in the twenties,
the ceilings were ten to twelve feet tall, and then
they had those little louver doors that could open above
your regular walk through door that let air circulate to

(59:32):
get rid of that heat there. You know, when we
started with air conditioning, we brought our ceilings down, but
that hot air still goes up like that.

Speaker 8 (59:43):
Yes.

Speaker 6 (59:45):
Well, you know we had a place down of Matta
Gordon we had attic fans in there when we first
got it, and that was not very long after we
bought it. We chant put a CIT for air conditions.
It's been there, yep. We weren't that tough.

Speaker 5 (59:58):
Yeah, I'm not either. That's why I have a generator
on my RV.

Speaker 6 (01:00:08):
My I's been at the shop over here in Katie
for three months now.

Speaker 5 (01:00:13):
Oh look, no, that's well. The only the only thing
I can think of is like you, just like you've
been saying, the heat is getting up in there, it's
staying in there, and then the cold air is mixing.
We got to mix that air up a little bit
better up there, I think.

Speaker 17 (01:00:34):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (01:00:34):
I got those big old one hundred original singing fans
oh cash it ons, yep, And I put those in
it when I built the house. And I told my
wife we can run those all the time, make sure,
they said, all of them and all real good. But
she only runs here and there. But said we run
twenty four seven. That would alleviate the problem. But you know,
I don't know how much money that costs run fans
all the time.

Exactly. Yeah, Well, I wish I could give you a

Degrees in there right now, and I wanted to figure
out what would be the least expensive way to bring
the temperature down into the seven well, maybe in the
eighties where I could work out there in the summertime.

The very first thing I would do, before I even
put air in, would put a radiant barrier on those walls.
Take a look at the energy q radium barrier and
that will block the heat transfer. And it's not unusual
to get a good fifteen plus degree drop with that

radio barrier, and you may not have to put any
energy stuff in it then.

Most interesting. Okay, So right now there is I have
in the center of the garage decking on the second floor.
But it's it's a it's a small area. But then
I've got a bunch of open you know where the
raptors are, a bunch of open areas. So should I
right put the radio barrier and cover off all of

I would. I would use the walls. Yeah, on my
ceiling of the garage, I would use the radiant barrier
and on the exterior walls of the garage.

And then I've got some starfoam stuff they sells at
the box store for the garage doors, and they're mettal doors.

Yep, So I guess that'd be good to help with

Yeah. Well, this what this does, This is a multi
layer system. It's not not a single layer, it's a
multi and so it can be sandwich in. But I
mean it stops the heat transfer and it will make
a heck of a difference for you.

Okay, on this second floor, then do I need to
put that in between the rafters?

I would just come up my walls when I hit
the ceiling for the garage comes straight across with it.
Uh and yeah, just and close the the area that
you want to keep.

Cool, okay, and not even worry about this. Yeah, okay, yes,
because then I won't we about the dingy garage.

Now. If you want air conditioning, absolutely it can be done.
In fact, I would probably recommend a mini split system
in a situation like that and do West air Conditioning
could absolutely take care of that for you. We'd have
to do a load calculation, which, by the way, if
any air conditioning company comes out and tries to sell
you an air conditioner and they're not doing a load calculation,

(01:09:54):
ask them to leave, because without a load calculation, they
don't know what the heck they're selling. You beyond that.
It's also the law now that it gets done that way.
That's in the code for air conditioning. So you need
air conditioning, you need a company you can trust. You

humidity amount where.

Do you see that.

It depends on the thermostats you have. Some of the
newer digital thermostats have it on them, but otherwise you
have to get a device that you can set in
the house that will tell you what the humidity level is.

Okay, and you can.

Actually find those at the box store, Okay, depot and Low's.

Yeah, And I normally try to keep my house at
seventy four while I'm gone and then I'm broking, and
sometimes when I'm at home, I keep it at that,
but I have ceiling hands going. So what level if
you have it at seventy four or no lower than

seventy what level of humidity should you have in your house?
Because I've never heard of.

Speaker 5 (01:12:20):
This should be Yeah, you should be somewhere between fifty
and sixty five. Then okay percent humidity.

Speaker 11 (01:12:29):
Yeah, okay, I did not know that you needed to
have humidity in your house.

Speaker 13 (01:12:35):
I don't want to sound stupid.

Speaker 5 (01:12:37):
Well, well you're not. But an air conditioning system is
basically a big dehumidifier. Yeah. It takes the moisture out
of the air and that's partially how it cools. And
so if your humidity level gets too high, you know,
like say seventy five percent. You're not comfortable at that.

(01:12:59):
And so the system and some of the newer systems
actually measure both the humidity and the temperature, and so
you have a setting that if the humidity level gets
too high, the system will come on and yes, it
does cool at the same time, but it'll take some
of the humidity out. That's also why you can't You

(01:13:22):
have to be careful that a system is sized properly.

You know.

Speaker 5 (01:13:25):
Sometimes people need a four ton air conditioner and they say, well,
I'm just going to put a five ton in so
I don't have to worry about it. When when you
oversize it, it doesn't run long enough to take the
humidity out of the air, and so in that case,
your humidity levels are going to be higher.

Speaker 11 (01:13:44):
Okay, okay, I understand that because someone had told me
at one point that my air conditioner was too big
for my house. It was I've had it since Ike,
because when we had Eke, I lost air conditioner and
at that time I had a home warranty and this
is what they put in my house. And I couldn't

tell you what it is because I can't remember that
far back.

Speaker 5 (01:14:11):
That's okay.

Speaker 11 (01:14:12):
But so between fifty five and between fifty five and
sixty five is what it should be in my house.
And I can get something that can tell me. I
can do that at home depots, that's yeah.

They'll have a little electronic device that will tell you
what the temperature is and what the humidity level is.

buildings that I do, and like get in the shed
at my house and in our shop that I have
it in. You can work out in that shop all
day long and the heat's not a problem because it's
it's like being under a big shade tree.

Yeah. I have a detached garage, and therefore it's not finished,
but I want to get it finished, yep, And I'm
going to put a radiant barrier all along the outside
wall and on the ceiling there you go. Take a
really good idea.

H It'll depend on the on the apparatus. If if
it sticks up above the roof like six eight inches,
it's okay, then more than likely you can do it
from the outside, uh, because some of them are only
like two or three inches up. And then it's then

you got to do it from the inside.

This it's it's high. It's it's it's above want a
collar on it? And then it's got a big box
on it. And yeah, it's got the solar panel that
it's unpossible.

Okay, So what you're gonna have to do then is
figure out how that comes apart. And usually it's gonna
be some some screws from the top. Uh, and they
may be underneath the solar panel, but you'll get some
screws from the top that come off. The ring will
probably pop off, and then the whole inside comes out.

Okay, can you put it back on? None of those?

Because I got it.

I'm gonna have to take the mortar out to check it,
see what type so that I can buy the mortar,

together and then uh. Because it as complicated as it sounds,

to control the sloughing off of the soil and stuff.
If not impossible into one little lot. Well, you got
the same thing in the Hill Country there. If you're
building too close to that river and the rains come through,
and the floods come through like that, your structures typically

aren't going to be able to handle that. And so
I understand those type of regulations. What I don't understand
is when they start regulating that you can't go down
by the river in those areas. And that's what we
have to be careful that we don't start over banning things.
Safety is a wonderful thing. Abused, it can be terrible anyways.

Hi, Jim, I have a three year old house that
has a problem with mildew up at the vaulted ceiling,
real close to a bank of windows in the back,
and I think it's caused by my air conditioner being
on fairly low and the heat from the roof causing condensation.

The problem is there's no attic space above that vault,
and so this is the second time it's happened in
three years, and I'm not really sure what to do.
Our builders trying the best he can do to figure
it out.

You're going to have to get some air circulation up there.
Okay and van or it could be a fan or
even a ceiling fan that's circulating the air in that
space up there, because your hot air and your cold
air mixing there is what's causing it. And so by

(01:33:16):
circulating the air and keep that from happening, you should
minimize it.

Speaker 3 (01:33:22):
Do I need to reverse the fan or just keep
it regular?

Speaker 5 (01:33:26):
If you have a ceiling fan there in the winter months,
we normally would reverse it. In the summer months, you know,
you'd have it blowing down. I personally don't like a
ceiling fan blowing on me. So you could reverse it
and it would blow air up into that and should
help alleviate that.

Speaker 3 (01:33:48):
Okay, what about a radiant barrier? I heard you talking
with the collar previously.

Speaker 5 (01:33:53):
If you have access to put one in, it would
definitely help. You would probably have to do your roof though,
in order to do that, and I hate to do
it to you, but I got to let you go
