band there, and there's the bands that are going to

mold inspection and re mediation. I must spit it out
here sooner or later says, do you have a reliable
mold and re remediation company that you would recommend? I
smell mold in my master bathroom behind the tile, and
it sent me pictures. And yes, you can send pictures

now when you send me an email. But the company
I would tell you to call, and I have used
used them is Woodland's Water Restoration. And their number is

can come out do the testing and do the cleanup

Let's jump into another. So Eric out of Katie says,
in my mom's room on her AC vent, she had
a black substance that came off pretty easily. She is
now concerned she may have mold in her house HVAC system.

(06:49):
Who would you recommend? You know, I think we get
too worried about mold a little bit. One thing I
can guarantee you, it's the beginning of time. Every home
has had some mold in it. The cleanest home in
the country has some mold in it. Is it a

(07:12):
great deal? No? Is it always an issue? No, mold
is natural. But on the HVAC system, when people see
that that stuff up there on the vents, yes, it
is a form of mold. But typically it's not something
you got to get overly worried about. It is something

(07:35):
you want to clean up and probably have your HVAC
system checked and altered a little bit. But it's not
because there's mold in it. It's because the way the
air is flowing is causing an issue. And here's what's happening.
Your vent heats up, the cold air comes through, and

(07:56):
that temperature differential will start it to Mold comes from
moisture and so as that thing is sweating, it's allowing
it to start growing mold there. And if we don't
clean it off, it just builds up and becomes that issue. Well,
you don't see it on the backside of the vent

(08:20):
because you're seeing the bottom. You're not seeing the side
that's up. Usually when we clean it up, that takes
care of it. You know, I did just mention Woodland's
water Restoration. If you're really concerned about mold, you can call.
They can come out and do a test for you.
But most of the time that's not an issue that

(08:42):
you need to be worried about. Just just go ahead
and get it cleaned up. But again, call your HVAC
company because they can maybe make some adjustments which would
change the airflow and temperature going through there that would
help keep this from becoming a bigger issue. So seven

thousand and seven and has the original aluminum double pane windows.
It appears that the lower parts of the windows are
dirty in between the panes, as if the seals are failed.
I would like to know if they are replaceable. Just
for the bottom pains in the frames that move up

and down. The glass pack is replaceable. So yes, that
can be replaced. Uh, you can have them come out.
But if these are old alumin frame windows, you may
want to look at going with some vinyl windows or
something else to be a lot more energy efficient. So

home can be reinsulated and it doesn't require you to
tear all the sheet rock off, tear the siding and off,
or anything like that. They can drill a small home,
whole home. I'm saying, a small hole through the brick veneer,

studs with a non expansive foam. Now, if there's insulation
in there, it'll encapsulate it, compress it and raise the
r value. If there's no insulation, can you imagine how
energy efficient your home can be. And look if your

home was built in the sixties or earlier it has
no insulation. There's homes even into the seventies that didn't.
This can be a game changer on your electric bills.

was talking about the glass on a replacement windows, and look,
the newer replacement windows do meet the new codes. You

mentioned that your house was built, No. Seven, the codes
have changed since that house was built, So replacement windows
would be more energy efficient. But you can have just
the glass pack. It's self replaced. And that happens from
the outside because that's the glasses put in, uh directionally

(16:42):
from the outside. Uh. There's a company in Pasadena, Johnson Glass,
who actually will come out measure it and make you
a new glass pack and put it in. If you
got a whole bunch of them to do that, they
probably could cut a a better deal for you. But
you know, again, it's getting to the point though, what

(17:05):
are you going to spend on it? And you have
to make the determination of what it's worth to you.
I got no idea what a new glass pack would cost.
I can tell you if you're going to go with
replacement windows. You are going to start at five hundred
dollars a piece and go up from there. So that

(17:26):
kind of gives you an idea of your budget that
you would have to worry about to do the glass packs.
And truly, if you only have one or two, you
do the glass packs. What I'm talking about is if
you're getting a whole bunch of them, and the email
kind of sounded like you had a bunch of them,
that we're doing this fogging up and stuff, that's when

you want to just go ahead and bite the bullet
and get the new windows and be done with it.
All right. You got a question seven one three two

got a quarter inch backing insulation to put between old
wooden wall covering and new paneling. Renovating a room in
one hundred plus year old home that was rough wooden
wall ship lap with no insulation in the wall cavity.
The plan is to cover existing rough wall with a

(18:35):
quarter inch insulation board of some type before covering the
wooden paneling as final wall covering. What type of quarter
inch product would be best to go behind the paneling
for insulating values. A quarter inch you don't have anything

(18:56):
that's going to do you much good as far as insulating.
Now you can shift that and put in a radium barrier.
You hear me talk all the time about energy Q
radium barrier. That would fit in there beautifully. And it's
made to sandwich behind building materials like that. It comes

(19:18):
in a roll. If you look at it, you're thinking
that's a heavy duty aluminum foil there, but no it's not.
It's five layer stick a thermal break in between, and
it will stop the heat transfer. Because of that thermal break,
you're able to sandwich it behind the sheet rock. So

(19:40):
you could put this on the ship lap, put the
sheet rock over it, and that would stop the heat transfer.
Now it's not going to be a quarter inch thick,
but I don't think you actually need a quarter inch stick.
And if you want to insulate well, then I would
tell you take a look at using the USA insulation

(20:05):
product because they can fill that wall cavity with the
foam and that would make a huge difference not only
on the comfort level, but also on the sound of
the home. And that would just be an amazing transformation,
So that would be what I'd look at. I would
not be looking at trying to put in like a

(20:27):
quarter inch foam insulation that's going to give you an
on our three value. The radiant barrier stops the heat,
and that's what you're looking for to make it more
energy efficient. In my attic, I lay it on the
attic floor on top of the insulation, so I keep

(20:48):
the heat from the attic from getting into the insulation.
When I redo a place like we did the place
at the Deer Lease, we put it on the walls.
Huge difference. And yes, it is worth every penny what
you spend on it, which be honest with you, is
not that expensive, all right, If you got a question

I don't know. I wasn't checking emails while I'm on
the air. But let's see. I'm sorry, that's okay, Yes,
I have them.

Okay, because you were talking about people were talking about
the eighteen problems are mold and this is in my
water's room. It's probably been like that about a year,
but I think it's gotten a little worse. Oh yeah,
and I need to know what to do and who
to call?

Okay, what and why did it happen?

Speaker 7 (24:16):
And this happened probably not long after you had some
sheet rock or not sheet rock, some insulation stuff done.

Speaker 10 (24:25):
This is a two story house and so her bedroom
is not directly underneath the acy, but I mean it's
up there, right, And I have had ac issues before,
but not recently, but this has probably been there to
some degree about a year, okay. And she had just
moved back with me about nine months ago. So now

(24:46):
that she does a bed in the room and it's
right over her her bed.

Speaker 7 (24:50):
I need to think about And it drips once in
a while, I'll be as well, doesn't it.

Speaker 11 (24:55):
She didn't say that, but it looks like it.

You know, you talked about the connosation while ago with someone,
so I'm sure, but I've never I don't know about
the sheet rock.

Why did that happen?

Speaker 7 (25:06):
Well, what what the picture looks like is the duckwork
that's coming into the AC vent there up up above
through that vent is basically a funnel looking thing that
the duckwork hooks to, yes, sir, And there's no insulation

(25:27):
around it, okay, And so it's hitting the cold air
going through that sheet metal is hitting the warm air
that has no insulation, and it causes it to sweat,
and that sweat rolls off it gets onto that sheet rock,
and that's the reason that it's doing that around the
vent the way it is, and you got a severe case.

(25:49):
I've seen a lot of those, and I've not seen one,
to be honest with you, seen one that's that severe.

Speaker 11 (25:56):
All right, So time my next steps?

Speaker 10 (25:58):
And who can I call?

Speaker 7 (26:00):
Any ac company should be able to go up there
and move some insulation around it for you or an
insulation company either one.

Speaker 11 (26:10):
Okay, But like, how do I to cut out that
part and repair the sheet rock?

Speaker 7 (26:17):
Well, I'm not sure you're going to have to cut
it out. Unless it's soft. You would be able to
take that vent cover off and use a like a
Zenser primer sealer on it. And I do see that
it's messed up the texture a little bit as well,
But once you put that zenzer on there, you can

(26:39):
retexture it, prime and seal it a second time, paint it,
and as long as the sheet rock didn't get soft,
which normally it doesn't from this, you would be fine
to paint and be done.

Speaker 10 (26:52):
Just paint over that and just have somebody come put
the insulation in the ceiling and the.

Speaker 7 (26:59):
Key thing before you paint it. You got to use
that primer sealer on it, because otherwise this will just
bleed right through the paints.

Speaker 2 (27:08):
Okay, Okay, okay.

Definitely definitely get the get the insulation around it before
you do anything else.

I used to have a fan up there in the
attic to pull the heat out.

I think it's been broken.

That's a very important right.

I should have it replaced too.

as well. I wanted to see if they make an
automatic bleach drip system that you can put on your
AC drain to keep it from plugging up. There's actually

a system that du West air Conditioning uses. It's it's
called the h Drain IV and basically we hook it
up in the attic. It's it's got a bottle that
drops materia, a liquid into the drain line on a

regular basis to keep it from filling up with molds
and mildews. So to answer your question, yes, they do
make it. There's also a system available if you go
into Low's or Home Depot that you can purchase and
put it in yourself if you want to. You just
have to remember to go up there and refill it periodically.

The system that DOS sells. If you're on our twenty
four to seven membership program, when we come out every
six months to do your check up, we're able to
refill it and keep your system from overflowing that way.

Yes, good afternoon, sir. I have a couple of quick questions. Number.
First of all, I had a ac company out to
my house and they first told me that my refrigerant
was low. Anyway, to make a long story short, because
my house is heating, and I mean it's not heating

(35:04):
cooling to the desired temperature, it's not working or anything
like that. I declined to get any refrigerant in. But
in the course of the country he said to me
the reason it may need refrigering is because the system
was losing some refrigerant. But when I asked him where
it was, he couldn't tell me. So I guess my
first question is is it possible for a refrigerant to

(35:25):
be lost if you don't have any leaks?

Speaker 7 (35:29):
No. No, it's a closed system, so it's it's pipes
that are under pressure. If there's not a leak, it
didn't go anywhere.

Speaker 5 (35:45):
Okay, okay.

Speaker 7 (35:47):
And how much do you want to add he wanted
to add one or two pounds?

Speaker 5 (35:52):
Yes, yeah, But I mean, I don't know much about
air conditioning fact and I know nothing, but I do
know one thing. It was the other morning it was cool,
cool outside. I don't know if a temperature has anything
to do with the pressure of the compressor or not
of the condenser. I mean, I don't know if that

(36:12):
was the issue. But I mean I just told him
I'm just going to wait and see, because if he
couldn't tell me I had a leak, I don't understand,
you know why I would want to put more refrigering
in because you can you know, I don't see what
if that would accomplish.

Speaker 7 (36:27):
You're one percent there is you are one hundred percent correct.
Companies are doing that all the time. And here's where
a lot of it comes from a lot of companies,
and I'm not going to say all of them because
even my company, we don't pay this way. We pay
our guys hourly. But there's a lot of them who
are on commission nowadays, so if they don't upsell you,

(36:52):
they don't make anything. And I got it that one
to two pounds was probably going to cost you anywhere
from one hundred to two hundred and fifty bucks depending
on what he was trying to charge for putting it in.

Speaker 5 (37:10):
Yeah, I know that. And then my second question is
he said something else to me, which I honestly, truthfully
have trouble believing. But I was listening to the show,
well it seems like a year ago now when the
subject came up. But he said to me, if I
required refrigerant after my warranty on my air conditioner expired,

(37:30):
I would have to buy a whole new AC unit
because he said that you can no longer use that
refrigerant if you have no warranty on your system. And
that makes absolutely zero sense to me. And I know
you talked about this last year. You know what these
new systems they came into this year. I mean, I

(37:53):
got all that, but I guess I'm not going to
put words in your mouth. I got the impression that
that was only if you needed to buy a new system,
you had to buy the one that was available. I didn't.
It had nothing to do with the older system. I mean,
I know. Word, let's say I need an evaporator coil.
I mean, what does that mean that I have to
buy a whole new system or nine of the whole fall.

Speaker 7 (38:16):
A wax or and the evaporator coil. Could get a
little bit dicey, But no, it does not. Okay, some
of the AC companies are trying to scare people into Oh,
if it's not the current coolant, you can't service it.
If you remember back R twenty two was phased out

(38:37):
years ago. Then we went to I can't remember what
the next one was, then went to four to ten A.
You know, we're three coolants. Back used to be an
air conditioning truck had to carry one type of coolant.
We now have to carry five because there's that many.

(38:58):
All of them are still available.

Speaker 5 (39:01):
Okay, I got it. Okay, Well that that's that's that
you're kind of clarifying what I thought you were going
to say. I guess I guess what you told me
is I should be aware of this company.

Speaker 7 (39:12):
I would probably be looking for another one. Yeah. Uh
and and and as far as the coil, it really
will depend on if the if the coil itself is
still made. How old? How old is your air conditioning system?

Speaker 5 (39:28):
It's only nine years old.

Speaker 7 (39:30):
You got absolutely no worry.

Speaker 5 (39:33):
That's what that was my thinking. I mean, my god,
oh myny. It's a Lenox. I mean, Lennox is a
recuro brand. I mean I know there's other good ones
like and stuff like that.

Speaker 7 (39:43):
Yes, okay, now I will tell you Lennox did have
an issue with their their coils in the attic portion
where they were leaking. So Lenox was aware of the issue.
They have taken care of that issue. They are available, okay.

Speaker 5 (40:03):
And my last question is is I don't know if
I'm using the right terminology. It's a little you know,
you have the electric box with all the switches that
if you you know, that can pop if you get
too much, too many amps in there and all that
other stuff.

Speaker 7 (40:18):
You breaker panel, Yeah, the electric panel.

Speaker 5 (40:22):
Yeah, that also applies to the air conditioning union. In
other words, if you were running your AC and there
was some reason for a surge, see, it would pop, right,
I mean, that's what would happened or because he was
saying that I probably needed a surge protector in addition
to the panel, and I guess I was a little.

Speaker 7 (40:40):
I do recommend surge protectors because the power is she's
not that clean anymore. Uh, put a whole house surge
protector on, though you don't have to do one dedicated
necessarily to the AC system only. Although it is more protection,
A whole house will take care of you.

without changing the appearance to reduce some of the heat absorption?

No? Really, no, it is a pigmented coating. That would
definitely it'd be like painting the.

Brick, okay, because that seemed like if it was a
clear but I don't know, even being transparent, it probably
would have a different appearance on the brick.

It would because the ceramic beads in it that would
reflect the heat that you're talking about would show up.

Yes, sir. I have a wooden house and they put
uh metal sighting on it and I want to move
it to put hardy plane. But it has a has
phone between a metal and the wood wood siding. Uh
should I take that phone off before putting my harty plane?

Speaker 7 (51:23):
I typically would tell you yes, And here's why. A
lot of times behind that phone you're gonna find that
there's an old siding and the old siding could be
rotting behind that phone.

Speaker 2 (51:41):
Yes.

Speaker 7 (51:42):
Now, if they take it off, and you know, they
can pull a piece or a spot or two off
to see if it's rotting and there is nothing. Now
you can leave it back there. It's not going to
hurt anything.

Speaker 12 (51:56):
So I can just I can just attach the hardy
plane to the phone.

Speaker 7 (52:00):
Well, it would attach through the foam into the site
the wood behind it. Yes, sir, because normally when they
put a vinyl or an aluminum siding on, they are
leaving the old siding on there, and that's what they're
nailing to.

Go ahead.

I have oak wooden floors. And I won't put the
lemonade down. And but some of my old oak woods
are loose? How would I? How would I fix that
problem from squeaking so much? Because right now have carpet.
I'm going to move the carpet, and I won't put
lemonade on top of that oak wood floor. But it

squeaks real bad. I guess it's loose.

How would have Well, you can reattach it with nails
and screws and stuff, but that normally isn't going to
get rid of all of it. Now, I don't want
you to laugh, But if you can go to the
areas where it is making the squeaking noise, put down
some uh baby powder and sweep it into the joints

in the boards. That will go in there as like
a lubricant. And so when the boards rub each other,
it doesn't it's not rubbing wood to wood. The lubricant
in between is the baby powder, and it gives it
enough rub it doesn't squeak.

first of all, to thank you for coming out and
performing for us at the Due West tenth there and

your music, because you have some just gorgeous Texas music

and a lot of times people don't realize there is
a difference between Texas music and sometimes some of the
other parts of the country to Nashville music, which I
know you're working Nashville now a lot, aren't you.

I am. Yeah, I'm there about every three weeks writing
songs and recording and doing the thing.

Speaker 7 (54:48):
So how did you end up getting into the music
scene versus going down a traditional road of something else.

Speaker 4 (55:00):
Well, I always loved music, so growing up, I was
always you know, listening to music and watching the videos
on TV and started to play guitar. Taught myself when
I was about thirteen, and I didn't really sing until
senior year of high school, I did the little talent
show with a girl, and out of there I joined

(55:23):
the Army, and while I was still in the Army Reserves,
I started to play gigs around town and just kind
of kind of just bloomed into a career. I'm on
a year eleven now, so it's it's been good. I
haven't had to have another job, just been very blessed
with it. In the road that has taken me down.

Speaker 7 (55:44):
Well, I watched I've seen you several times perform, and
it definitely is a job. But I get, I get
I'm going to say it this way, it's probably a job.
Like when I'm doing this radio show. You love what
you're doing, you have fun doing it, so it really
doesn't feel like a job, right.

Speaker 4 (56:04):
Yeah, I mean there's you know, just like with any job,
there's days, there's ups and downs, and there's challenges, but
you know, at the end of the day, I get
to I get to do what I love and and
play for people that love it. So it's a it's
a fair trade off, just like with any job.

Speaker 7 (56:21):
Yep. So you a lot of times like to do
some of the and have more of a nineties country
sound to you rather than some of this. I wasn't
a huge fan of some of the rockabilly stuff and that,
but you've got a more mellow sound to it, which

(56:42):
I think it's becoming very popular again.

Speaker 4 (56:45):
It is, yeah, you know, and I think for a
long time I was I was trying to find out,
you know, who I was and what I sounded like,
and it just naturally pushed back into the nineties early
two thousands country that I love, you know, just what
comes out.

Speaker 7 (57:06):
So on your touring now, because I know you go
different places and tour how many I may weeks a
year or nights a week or I don't know how
artists like you gauge that stuff, But how often are
you having to be on the road?

Speaker 4 (57:26):
So we are, you know, on a busy year, we're
about one hundred and seventy shows, one hundred and sixty shows,
about three days a week. Sometimes, depending on how far
it is, we might have to sacrifice a day or
two to travel. So I'm on the road about two
hundred and forty two hundred and fifty days a year.

It feels like, wow, that's a lot of traveling to
a lot of road Yeah, it is so well, Jake.
I'm definitely looking forward to seeing you perform again tonight

that was that I live in, that was built in
nineteen seventy three. It's brick around the whole outside. The
roof was replaced. I did it seven years ago, so
it's got events up in the top of it.

Uh huh.

Speaker 2 (59:49):
My question is, and my electric bills are not that bad.
I'm only at about fifteen hundred square feet. The insulation
attic is to say the least. I may have an
R eleven R nineteen at past. Okay, but when I
go to redo that, would it makes sense for me

to redo what's over the ceiling and staple insulation to
the rafters as well.

Speaker 7 (01:00:19):
No, you the cost of that insallation. You would never
get a payback.

Speaker 2 (01:00:24):
On it, Okay, Okay, So simply putting like an R
thirty two in the attic would be.

Speaker 7 (01:00:32):
Sufficient, yes, sir, Yeah, just the insulation for the living
the air conditioned space is the way they put it
is what you need. Now you can if you wanted
to do something that would help with energy efficiency further,
you could take a look at that energy Q radium
barrier I talk about, because that can lay on top

(01:00:56):
of the insulation, okay, and that keeps Yeah, it'll keep
the heat that's that gets in the attic from getting
into the insulation. So it allows it to work so
much better. And I will tell you my house was
built in nineteen seventy three as well. It's three thousand
square feet. I got probably twenty five to thirty percent

of my house has no insulation in the attic. What
does have insulation is only about three to five inches thick.
But I got that energy que laying on top of that.
And I've had this now for the last twenty one
or twenty two years. And my electric bill runs me

roughly two hundred dollars a month.

For three thousand. Yeah, with fifteen hundred, I'm one hundred
and twenty bucks on a one forty at the worst. YEP,
so it's called energy Q and it's like a blanket.

you you can cut it into like ten or twelve
foot long pieces and go lay it up there like
a blanket on top of your insulation and it's it

know you've you've opened it yet. And it can be August,
the hottest part of the year. I can go up
that staircase, don't feel any heat, move that piece of
radiant barrier to the side, and it's like you opened

Well, I have a room on the front of the house.
It's you know, makes a ninety degree angle because it's
the corner. And my son in law took the carpet
up about ten ten fifty fourteen years ago and put
down some wood floors, and he put plywood under it, okay,

(01:06:28):
and then when and then they moved and I rented
the house out of Wiles about so about seven years later,
I decided to fix it up and move in it.
And I decided to make that floor in that room
match the other new wood floors I had put in,
and so we started the workers started pulling it up,

(01:06:49):
and that plywood was black and soft and mushy. So
he said, ma'am, you got to clean this up. So I,
my son and I cleaned it up and we mopped
with floor ops. Well, and I put down floors some Kasia. Well,
I think it's a Casia floors in there. Now. I'm

(01:07:10):
getting black spots round black spots, and I even had
water underneath a plastic bin in the closet. So it's leak.
Water's coming up out of the foundation, and I don't
know what to do about it. Nobody's been able to
tell me.

Okay, call the houses child.

It was bi in sixty four or sixty.

Speaker 7 (01:07:30):
Eight, okay, So what happens a lot of times to
these houses as the age people. You know, the yard's
been mowed for the last in this case, you know,
fifty sixty years, and the grass build up from the clippings.
You know that as it decays, that URMs the soil,

(01:07:51):
it raises the soil level, and concrete is poorous, moisture
will go through, water will go through concrete, and as
the soil level comes up, it makes it easier for
it to go through because now you're above the bottom
of the foundation. So unless you have at least four

(01:08:13):
inches of concrete showing around the house, you can figure
that your ground level is above the bottom of the
concrete of that foundation.

Speaker 3 (01:08:26):
Of four inches. Yes, ma'am, is that you think that
is the problem. And if I dig out, I have
it does away from the house, that'll take care of it.
Because I need to put new floors in. I'm afraid
of mold.

Speaker 7 (01:08:42):
Well, I you know, obviously I'm not looking at it.
But what part of clear Lake is this?

Speaker 3 (01:08:48):
It's in nass Albey Okay, yeah.

Away from the water.

Yeah, but typically those houses are a couple of feet
above the water level.

the whole neighborhood with survey.

Yeah, so that shouldn't shouldn't be the issue. I got
an idea. It's simply going to be a drainage issue.
If you want to call my office at due West,
let one of the guys come out and take a
look at it. Doesn't cost you anything, and they can
check and see, you know, what the what the drainage
stuff looks like, because it maybe just a little bit

of regrading. Can take care of this for you.

get it looked at to find out what's going on now.
On the air conditioning, yeah, if a technician comes out
and has to do something, he's going to charge you
for for what he had to do, uh saying with
the plumbing. But if you're looking at replacing your plumbing

system or something, no, there's no charge to come out
and look at that either. So again that number seven

on Texas Home Improvement. I had an email question come
in about of high humidity. It's high humidity in a

(01:11:21):
retrosprayed foam old house, and that's all it says. Well, look,
it really depends on what's been done to that house.
And I say that because if all you did was
retrofoam the walls, like I talk about all the time, well,

(01:11:44):
the attic is still breathable, so you shouldn't be having
any issues. The floor underneath, if it's a place up
on blocks or anything, would still be breathable, even if
it's a concrete slab. Though, you know, just phonming the
walls alone is not going to cause a high humidity problem.

(01:12:05):
What will cause a high humidity problem, though, is if
you had an old house that had an air conditioning
system that was designed for it having no insulation, and
now you insulate it. Your air conditioning system is just
way oversized. It's not running enough any longer in order

(01:12:27):
to control the humidity because it's holding temperature better. The
AC system is your dehumidifier. But again, once you take
a house that had no insulation and you insulate it,
you've changed the game. So I'm gonna use say an

(01:12:51):
eighteen hundred square foot house. We'll say it had a
five ton air conditioning system in it because there was
no insulation. Now you put insulation in it in the
same house only needs three tons of air conditioning. Well,
when your air conditioner comes on, it's running. It's cooling
that place down in a matter of just a couple

(01:13:12):
of minutes. Typically, for an AC system to dehumidify a
house properly, you want it to run for like ten
to fifteen minutes even more. That's reason the variable speeds
are so good at what they do. It's running on
a low flow of air all the time, and so

(01:13:34):
you're able to be pulling that moisture out. But if
your AC system is so big that it cools it
in five minutes, then the system shuts off. It didn't
have the opportunity to pull any cool layer out. So
how do you fix that. Well, in some cases you're
able to change the air speed of the system. That's

(01:13:58):
in some cases it depends on the type of carriers
one of the systems that you can move some wires
around and change the airflow. In other cases you may
have to replace the AC system, or if you've got
two systems, combine it down to one. It just depends
on what's going on. But these are things you need

(01:14:21):
to be aware of. You can have the same problem
happen even doing replacement windows and different things like that.
And so when somebody comes out and size is an
air conditioner system for you, they have to look at
what ways of house facing, what's it have for windows?
You know, what's the energy efficiency of the windows? What

(01:14:44):
do you have for installation? All this goes into a
computer program that should spit out what size air conditioner
it needs. If you're ac guy's not doing that, get
rid of them, get another guy. But if he does
the and you didn't tell them, hey, I'm gonna insulate
the walls, you you likely have an oversized unit that's

(01:15:07):
causing this problem for you. All right again seven one three,
two one two five eight seven four, and I'll see
what I can do to help you out here on
Texas Home Improvement. Well, that was not the right to
question there, because that was the one we just did.

twenty third. Photos are in the garage, but there are
numerous cracks throughout the house, houses complete, and we are
in it. Had an engineer look at the driveway and
he stated that it is normal for a poor in
July first degree. What do you think? And he sent

me pictures of it and stuff. And the issue is
and when did I get this? Yeah? I just got
this not long ago. Here's the issue. All concrete cracks
by nature. Steel is in the concrete to hold it together.

(01:16:36):
So the fact that you got some hairline cracks is
not concerning. Now. If the cracks start one side getting
higher than the other, that's concerning. If the cracks start
opening up, that's concerning. But just the hairline cracks, you
really don't need to be worried about that. So hopefully

(01:17:01):
that'll calm your nerves a little bit on it. But
not something that I'd get overly upset about. Let's see
here seven one three, two, one two five eight seven four.
Let's talk about Southern front doors real quick. You know,

eight seven four. And let's see. Yeah, I'm gonna answer
this one because it goes kind of in the question
with the lady we were talking to a few minutes ago,
uh down in the clear Lake area, uh Dan, we
are noticing a white powder throughout the house and have

(01:21:48):
no clue what is causing it. Same thing occurred last
winter and we met with our HVA C tech and
discussed it. His solution was to replace the thirty year
old flex dust on both units in the attic. Apparently
that did not resolve the issue. We have turned off
one heating unit for a week to try and determine

(01:22:11):
if the source of the powder is from the second
train unit. The second unit is eleven years old and
the first unit is fifteen years old. I don't know
who to call in this matter, got any suggestions. Well, look,
typically when you're getting that white stuff coming up, it's effuorescence,

(01:22:34):
and it's an indication that there's moisture causing it. And
so shutting off your units probably actually made it even
worse because they're not dehumidified than if it's heat that
was running. It wasn't dehumidified much anyways, although some of
the heating systems will dry the air out like it's unreal.

(01:22:56):
But nonetheless, the white stuff that comes up that looks
like cotton candy, kind of fuzzy like, is efforescence, and
what that is is moisture is getting in the concrete.
There's a chemical mix between in the concrete where the

(01:23:16):
and typically what it's from is the dust that was
on the rock mixes with something else that's in the
cement mix, and if it gets wet, it causes this
effhorescence to grow. Can it happen on new structures, Yes,
it can, but it traditionally or more often happens on

(01:23:39):
older structures as they're getting more and more moisture. And
a lot of times you'll see it really heavy in
the garage. But you can see it in the living
space if your HVAC system is not dehumidifying properly or
if it's not being actually used. Where a lot of
people will see this in the living space of the

(01:24:01):
home is if they don't cool the house enough. If
you like to leave your system set at seventy nine degrees,
you're not too humidifying enough, and it can cause an
issue for you on that build up. So but a
lot of times, again, like I was talking about, it

(01:24:22):
can be the moisture coming into the concrete because the
soil has just gotten too high around it. So hopefully
that'll help you out with that. And let's see, since
we were talking about spray foam as well. Marty sent

in a question that says, spray on foam in my attic.
I have a room that my HVAC is in and
I have insulaated the ceiling with bats, but the walls
have some funny framing, so using bats in the wall
is difficult. I want to use a dude yourself phone kit.
I've seen boxes of pham at home depot. Since I'm

(01:25:08):
sealing the house and as we okay, I'm not sure
what he's saying here, so about thinking that I need
closed cell Okay, since he's sealing the house as we
do work, So I'm thinking that I need closed cell insulation.
Is there a brand you suggest or a place I

(01:25:31):
should go to get more information and buy what I need. Typically,
if you're doing a wall, it doesn't matter if you're
using the closed cell or open cell. You can use
whatever one is available, and you can go by cost.
It really is that simple. Where I dictate a difference
between closed sell and open cell, uh is, if you're

(01:25:56):
going to be doing it underneath in a cross space
and doing the bottom of the floor, you want close
cell because open cell will hold moisture, it'll it'll actually
draw it from the air underneath where it's high humidity
in the cross space of a house, and it'll hold

(01:26:17):
that moisture then against the wood and cause it to rot. Well,
open cell, I mean a closed cell won't do that.
And so that's where you're gonna want to use the
different ones. But if you're just doing the walls of
a home or like in this case, up in the attic,
it won't. It won't make any difference, and you'll be

(01:26:38):
fine using either one. I would tell you you should
be able to put bat insulation there as well, though
if if you're if you're going to be able to
put the phone. But sometimes just getting into places can
be a bit of a problem. So hopefully that kind

(01:27:01):
of will take care of that. Not sure it did
or not. And let's see jimsends in an email. Concrete
slab cut and splice. I'm looking at an attractive property
to buy. But the pictures show that the slab has
been spliced up in an X pattern about a foot

(01:27:26):
wide and wall to wall. They were then backfilled with
new concrete. This is in the interior and is listed
as foundation repair completed. That is not foundation repair, folks.
The realator says that the cuts were spliced in, and

(01:27:48):
they were an engineer's report, and I think that I
should run run away. Is there any chance that this
slab could be sound? None? Period, you're dealing with four
inch concrete. When you're dealing with foundation, they have a

(01:28:08):
beam that's around the perimeter. That's why it looks like
it's thicker than four inches. But that beam is only
twelve inches wide, and sometimes even only ten but let's
just give it. It's twelve inches wide. Then it just
goes to four inch thick. And when they cut through
a four inch concrete slab that way, even though they

(01:28:31):
rebor them back together and all that stuff, it is
never back like it was. So you are correct. Don't
just walk away run away. This right now is a
buyer's market, and you sure as heck don't need to
be buying somebody else's problem just because they wanted to
go cheap and did a project wrong. We'll be back
