I had the opportunity earlier to talk with Anthony from Rhinoshield,
and I think I'm gonna go ahead and start with
that today. So I'm gonna start today with Anthony from
Rhino Shield and Anthony, how are you doing today?

Speaker 4 (02:03):
I'm doing well.

Speaker 7 (02:04):
By yourself, I'm.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Doing great, so good. A lot of people don't really
understand what rhino shield is. You know, when you look
at it, you think, oh, well, that's just a paint,
but it's not. It's a coating that does a whole
lot more than paint ever thought about doing.

Speaker 4 (02:28):
That's a fact that is for sure. Yeah, Rana showed
is a ceramic coating. It goes on nine times thicker
than pain, very durable, very impact resistant, insulating, soundproofing, you know,
everything that you would want for the next year of
your home, even as a class A fire writing. So
we'll not ignite performing very well, we come, we're back

with the twenty five year nonpro redded and transferable warranting.

Well, and I'll tell you that there's two items that
I truly love about this product. Is compared to a
lot of other products, it's breatheable, where when you put
paint on, it's not breathable, and that's why when people
paint brick and stuff, it tends to blister off. And
it's got some elasticity to it where it's not just

gonna crack every time the building materials under it expand
and contract, and that really helps with its durability.

Yes, it really does, you know. So we're we're a
waterproofing product for the exterior wall, but at the same
time allowing the the wall to breathe so it is
fully permeable, which is very important, you know. And it's uh,
it's easy to maintain, easy to clean, to take a
water hose, rinse it off once a year. That's that's

really all we recommend, you know. No more ladders, no
more brushes, no more painters. Yeah, there's much better things
to be doing, spending your time doing than kind to
find that that good painter guy that worked with you last.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
Time, you know, well, and it comes with a long
warranty that people don't have to worry about it. I mean,
their house stays looking new for years to come.

Speaker 4 (04:15):
It does, you know. The only important thing too, is
the colorance that we use. So not only is the
coating reflective so it's low e rated meeting as reflects
to v raised and the heat protecting itself, at the
same time, it's keeping the surface of the wall on
average thirty degrees cooner, so it's saving time, I'm sorry,

saving energy, you know. So it's just it's amazing. And
then the twenty five years you can't beat that. And
let's say a homeowner is only in the home for
fifteen years and they decide to sell the house or
pass it on to a family member, then the next
homeowner is going to have still a ten year warranty,
you know, covering the next tier of their walls for them.

Now you mentioned that this is a ceramic co and
in our Texas sun that can make a huge difference
because our sun is what really just beats up other
building materials and paints and different things like that. This

product is used all over Texas and protects buildings where
people don't even realize what they're looking at is this product.
But if you're seeing a place that's staying looking good
for year after year after year, not fading and stuff,
it's probably going to be Rhino Shield on it.

Very true.

That is very true, you know. So it is Ronal
Shield is built to last. As I was mentioned, the
colorants are even reflective, and so you've got the ceramics
as well as the colorance. The colorance we use are
very high end, cool color system that's also reflected. You know,
dark colors have gotten popular again, you know, and used
to to try and shut new people away, you know,

more to a light tone or a midtone. But we're
doing a lot of blacks, a lot of bronzes.

You know.

We just don't have any issues with it. You know,
we can put the Ronald Shield on any substrate, on
any building to be commercial, residential and illustate looking beautiful
for many years.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
So well, and you know you mentioned any substrate. I mean,
you guys can do I mentioned brick already. You can
do hardy, you can do wood, you can do metal,
virtually any building material out there, you guys can apply
the Rhinal Shield product.

Speaker 4 (06:36):
That is correct. We have a you know, very much
like paint. So we have a product that works for
every substrate out there, So you name it, we've got
something for it. All built less.

So I have done some places with Rhinal Shield in
the past, and you know, some of the things that
I found very interesting was we did one home where
we did the brick, we did the overhead garage door,
and the part that really I found interesting was they

had white vinyl windows and they didn't want white, and
we used the Rhino Shield product to paint those window
frames as well. At that place just came out looking gorgeous.
And that has been probably five years ago, and you

can't tell that that's a five year old paint job.
I mean, it still looks gorgeous.

Let's see. Know, you know, we've been doing this for
quite some time. Let's see. I took over the dealership
here in the central South Texas area in February at
twenty eleven, and we have done over sixteen hundred projects
in this area. You know, climate is very very tough
and challenging and we've just had fantastic performance. Yep, we

really have it those days we come out into a
house for you. Obviously, you know, you can have the
best product in the world like Ranashield, but if it's
not done by the right guys, lucky any good like
I let's just say we've got the best of boat.
We've got guys and be with us for twelve plus years,
which do fantastic work. They're very good at what they do.
We could you know, if we need to do masonry
repair or carpetry repair, we take care of all that

and install the Rono Shield product. That homeowner is going
to go for a long time, you know. So you've
got a turnkey job. Good for the homeowner, it's good
for us. Everybody's happy. You've got twenty five years back
in your you know, non parady and transferable. Something comes
up to consulnders call us.

And that prep work is the important part because you
are putting a twenty five year warranty on it. You're
getting all the bad wood, taking care of and stuff
ahead of time so that it's there to stay and last.
Because I mean, who wants to go in and patch
it after you got the coding on.

Speaker 4 (09:01):
Well, you know, it's it's very common, uh, in the
painting industry that the painters, you know, obvious they're not carpenters,
and so they'll use as a patch of compound or
something like that. So more or less just kind of
putting a bandit damaged area, you know, and the rock
select and affection. If you don't treat and remove it,
it's going to spread into the airs of the house.
So we're going to make sure to come in and
do a thorough inspection and anything that's has it's even

(09:25):
if it's questionable. You know, some people may even leave it.
If it's questionable, we're going to take it down and
replace it because it's just better for the homeowner, it's
better for us. Twenty five years in a warrant is
a long time, so you've got to make sure that
you get that house compared properly.

Speaker 7 (09:38):
Yep.

So in this in Central Texas they can call Rhino

I've got a question for you about concrete tyle roofs. Okay,
darter bought a house, just bought a house with concrete
tile roof and uh, it is that a good one?
Or should she replace it?

Speaker 7 (17:03):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (17:04):
No, don't replace it. Concrete tile roofs are They're very good.
They're a premium roof. You want to minimize people up
there walking around and stuff because it can damage it.
But it's an extremely durable roof. If they're properly attached,
they hold up really well. When we have hurricanes and

(17:25):
storms that start peeling roofs off, those tend to stay
the there's really not a downside to them. They ventilate
extremely well. It's also.

Speaker 11 (17:39):
Okay, so why does an everyone use those types.

Speaker 2 (17:44):
Of roof because the framework of the house has to
be beefed up because they're heavy and it's expensive. And
you may not know this, but we're all pretty cheap.

Speaker 11 (18:00):
But somebody put it's a second half or used house,
so somebody put them, put them on there. Put these
concrete tiles on the root for some reason I don't know.

Speaker 2 (18:12):
Yeah, the biggest reason people put them on, uh is
a durability. I mean, you've put a regular shingle roof
on and Let's just say you put a thirty year
roof on in Texas, you're going to be replacing that
roof in probably round number eighteen years. You put this

(18:35):
concrete roof on, it will outlast the house.

Speaker 11 (18:41):
Okay, So do they do they have a leak problem
or not? Do you know? Okay? All right, all right,
well that's uh, that's a good information. I'll pass that
on to her.

Speaker 2 (18:56):
Then all right, Jim, I appreciate it, and you have

Again. If you have a question seven one three, two

to his question there, you know why doesn't everybody use it?
The cost is really the biggest reason. If you go
back and you look at historic houses, they typically either

(19:25):
had a slate or a tile, or as concrete roofs
came out, they had the concrete roof because they were
so durable they held up. We don't build stuff to
be durable anymore. We build it for a set period
of time, and with the understanding that we're going to
be replacing it, and with those concrete roofs, you really

(19:49):
you got something that's going to be there for not
just years, but decades and decades to come. So all
right again seven to one, three, one, two, five, eight,
seven four. We still got open lines. All open lines.
Not the norm for here, but it is available. So

(20:10):

Uh I had one from Wes. He says, Unfortunately, I
have a Federal Pacific breaker box in my closet. Can

(20:31):
I replace it by going directly through the exterior wall
to the outdoors or does it have to go in
the garage? It's about a one foot move to the
outside wall versus one hundred plus to the garage. Would
it also be a less expensive and an approved relocation.

do to help us homeowners, Wes, Well, you can absolutely
put it outside. Baker boxes are put outside all the time,
far less expensive because you basically unhook the breaker box
you have, you undo the wires from all the breakers,
put the new box outside, the wires will pass to

(21:13):
the outside, get hooked back up to the breakers, and
you are good to go. If you move it, you're
basically rewiring the whole house because the wires would have
to be run from where they're coming in now to
the breaker panel all the way to the garage, and
that would be extremely expensive and quite frankly, no reason

(21:33):
to do it. Breaker panels on new homes are put
outside all the time. It'll work just fine. And yes
it meets code. Give right Touch Electrical a call and
they could get that taken care of for you. Got

How can I help you, Honey, I've got a root
question now it's from since you're on the roofs, it's
good timing. I have a fifteen year old roof shingles
that were put on because the first one's wore out. Well, no,
not wore out. We have held here and it was

(24:06):
a high definition roofs, the original. When I built the house,
they replaced it with a high end. They didn't make
the high definition anymore, but the high end slate look
roofs they put on it. Well, now fifteen years into
a thirty year life, it's I'm noticing the granular material

(24:27):
like you're describing running off onto the driveway.

Speaker 5 (24:31):
Yep.

Speaker 10 (24:32):
So my question is, is any of this spray on
supposed life extending stuff that they advertise on TVs that
off Nick oil, roof oil Nicolo's.

Speaker 2 (24:48):
That's a great question. And you Tomaut stuff like that
roof Max and things like that.

Speaker 7 (24:56):
Right, I think that's one of the brand. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (24:59):
And look, if you are looking for it to extend
the life of the roof for another year or two,
it works for that. The marketing that they're doing though,
saying it's going to you know, double the life of
your shingles or extend it five and ten years and

(25:19):
all that kind of stuff. It's not in our climate.
It's not going to do that. The biggest thing, the
biggest thing you have to look at is how much
are they going to charge to do it? Sure, because
I've seen some of them trying to charge over half

(25:39):
what a new roof would cost. That's not spending good.

Speaker 7 (25:43):
Money, right right?

Speaker 10 (25:47):
And why do they sell the shingles? Why do the
manufactual I guess because I can and so maybe, but
why are they advertise it as a thirty year roossene
well pro rating on the same product.

Speaker 2 (26:02):
Line because they're manufacturing a product that's for the whole country.
And if you go, say to Colorado, you'll probably get
your thirty years out of it, but.

Speaker 10 (26:16):
Exactly, but not here, Okay, So, and that's still the
market of the industry is doing a national wild life Yeah,
if it has any kind of original warranty for proation,
would that be.

Speaker 7 (26:36):
Worthy to go with?

Speaker 10 (26:38):
Or I guess what I'm looking for is the next
tailstorm I suppose we have in Houston's going to be replacing,
so I should do it now. I will wait until
the next tail storm.

Speaker 2 (26:47):
Well, just because you've lost some granules, I wouldn't worry
about that. That is part of having a regular shingle
type roof, and you will lose granules for typically five
to ten years before it gets bad enough that you
got to replace the roof.

Speaker 7 (27:03):
Oh, excellent Inns, exact question. I appreciate that much.

Speaker 2 (27:07):
And the way you can tell if it's time to
replace it, when the corners start curling up things like that,
that's when it's getting time to replace it.

Speaker 10 (27:17):
Oh, of course I remember that half the first roof. Yes,
and I don't have any of that. A insulation in
the attic is he still the original and it's a
little fluffy white material?

Speaker 3 (27:29):
Huh?

Speaker 10 (27:29):
And I have the radiant barrier on the decking. Is
there ever in need? And I'm not having any heat
problems in the house? Is there ever any need to replace?
As insulation ever? The blown in insulation ever wear out?

Speaker 2 (27:48):
It doesn't wear out, but blown in does tend to
settle over time, and when it settles, you end up
adding more on top of it. And the normally you
got to do that about every ten years.

Speaker 10 (28:01):
Oh okay, Well, then do you have a product I
need to have mine looked at, I guess, or just
have it on because they can blow in more on top.

Speaker 7 (28:13):
Of the old.

Speaker 2 (28:14):
I don't have anybody off the top of my head
to tell you. I can tell you there is a
product that's getting ready to start in a few months
in Houston called Milo Insulation. Okay, and I would definitely
take a look at that, because unlike the fiberglass and
cellulos has blown in, this won't settle over time. So

(28:38):
once it's in, you'd be done.

Speaker 10 (28:42):
Oh well, yes, and that's the new technology that's going
to go online.

Speaker 2 (28:47):
Well, it's just getting ready to come to Houston. I've
actually been talking about this product for years up in
the Dallas market, and I was just told yesterday in fact,
that they are expanding now into Houston. They're already in Austin,
in Dallas and San Antonio and stuff and and so

(29:08):
they're they're they're getting ready to expand to Houston now.

Speaker 10 (29:13):
All right, So it's a tried I mean, it's good.
Oh yeah, technology is the new technology?

Speaker 7 (29:19):
Oh great, great, great great? And that's the product line
you'd say.

Speaker 2 (29:22):
Go with that that that would be the one I
would go with.

great listening. The last caller was awesome because I was
wanting to use or thought about that that spray on
roof stuff. The commercials look great with them a guy
standing on the roof spraying, Yeah, the roofs of the

stuff with no with no face mask on or safety glasses.
And then I was like, what about over spray? And
then my question is because actually I have three questions
with that spray and I have solar panels, which was
a great idea, except the company went out of went bankrupt,

(30:40):

typically is not an issue because they literally spray this
on those shingles and it runs down the roof and
it'll drop down into your flower. Beds so uh and
then they just water the heck out of flower beds

a huge. Issue what what they have in their mixer
is something that soaks into the shingle that that helps
to revitalize. It but it's just not going to do
it as as well as what they. Market it does do,
it it's just not the length of time that they, Market, yeah.

these guys come in and put in your shingles and
then a couple of years later that comes spray your
roof and revitalize your your shingles for free two hundred

Away and just kind of in general a house in,
general are most of the foundation problems typically around the
edge and not in the. Center you, know sure dehydration
in the center of a, slab say fifteen twenty feet

from the edge of a, wall is that is that
soil pretty stable over the long. Term just kind of
trying to understand the dynamics of the whole. Thing so

Ask you a quick. Question did they tunnel to get
to the leak or did they go through the slab they? Tunneled,
okay if you, tunneled you and you don't underpin that,
area it will start a foundation problem because it's impossible
to compact that soil back the way it was and,

general foundation problems start at the perimeter and work their way.
In the big factors though that change that are leaks
in the in the sewer system and the water lines
and tree roots and so you were probably dealing with

moving that much, more and so you're going to you're
forever chasing. Cracks, then so your other option is to
jackhammer through the lab and install install underpinning that. Way but,
again by time you go back and rebuild the inside and. Everything,

know what my fate. Is but just as a general,
rule just a general, statement you, know put it in
my small pe. Brain centers of, houses you know they're.
Subject are they generally going to be pretty? Stable except

when they. Don't you, know you might have a couple
of big oak trees or. Whatever does a severe weather
cycle typically affect the center of the house or is
it more of a perimeter type.

Situation the severe weather cycles are typically more. Perimeter, now
one of the things that's making yours a little more
susceptible is you've got some peers on the perimeter, already
and so what does happen is the perimeter stays, up
and when the tree roots reach under the middle of
yours and starts taking the moisture, out the middle tends to.

Drop there's no place for it to go up and.

Down, yeah but if you didn't have the piers on the,
perimeter it wouldn't look as drastic because then the perimeter
goes down with.

depending on the year when the house was, built depends
on how rigid the foundation. Is houses that were built
in the seventies and earlier have a lot of, flexibility
and so the piers will only support an area that

reaches in maybe six or eight. Feet where houses that
are being built in the nineties till today that are
the grid pattern look like a. Waffle they're moving as a.
Unit and so you're seeing the newer homes you get
in till all the way across the house instead of

(55:02):
just an edge. Dropping but where the where the piers
on the outside make it look more drastic is the
outside is not moving with. It it's staying up and
so as the middle, drops it just looks a lot
more dramatic than it actually.

Is, Right, Okay well this is one of the FORMER
u seventies and, Earlier so, yeah, Okay, JIM i totally
appreciate you taking the time for the, explanation And i'll

can get uh you, know three quarters too an inch.
Rebound well at that you probably don't need.

barrier to keep that middle from going down because it
is so cheap compared to. Peers but it's just an
option to take a look.

REASON dus has a plumbing company is because so much
foundation repair work is needed due to plumbing, leaks and in,
particular a lot of it is the cast iron sewer.
Pipes if you still have the old cast iron sewer

pipes and you haven't started looking at replacing. Them it's
time you start considering it BECAUSE i can guarantee you
it's already leaking and it can cause you. Problems and
right now our weather cycle is. Changing i'm sure you've
seen it and heard it on the. News we're going

into an Al. Nino you, know normally we go into
an Al nino type cycle every ten, years and usually
we have a one or two year, drought then we
have Al, nino then we'll go back into normal and
then back into a. Drought and, well this cycle has been.
Different we add a wet. Cycle we went into a little,

drought and that little drought kept going and kept going
and kept, going and we literally had a good six
year plus drought. Time houses that were built during this.
Drought when it starts raining and we've been having the rain,
already but they're saying it's really not going to get

(58:27):
bad until probably. Fall but as the rain start, going your,
slab if you were built during this last say five,
years was put on dry. Soil as it starts raining
and soils start to, swell well your house is going

(58:47):
to start moving a lot and there is a lot
of foundation work that ends up happening on newer. Homes,
now here's what's going to happen with the newer homes
that we're dealing with this. Time they're waffle. Slabs they're very.
Rigid the house will tilt across the. House, now some
of them may be only an inch or, two others

(59:09):
maybe six seven. Inches but what happens with the insurance
is they come in and they start not your, homeowners
but the builder's insurance because typically the first ten years
is covered by the builders on the, foundation but their
insurance will start, saying, well the foundation is performing as,
intended it's not causing cracks that those are, working you,

know all that kind of. Stuff but it's got a slope.

Across that's because of the. Soil well guess it. Is
but that is what causes foundation. Problems so you end
up arguing with. Them but, nonetheless we need to be
prepared with these weather cycle. Changes you're going to see

if a tree was cut, down now the moisture comes,
in it tips it. Up, uh it becomes a major. Issue,

they recommended an at mocks ventilation, system air duct, cleaning
and a system to keep things from growing in THE ac.

but there was something said about the fact THAT i
have a brand new. Roof their proposal was pretty. PRICEY
i would appreciate your. Advice, well a lot OF ac
companies are out selling a whole lot of stuff that
just doesn't need to be. Used i'll start with the

vent cleaning that they were talking. About air duck. Cleaning you,
know the air that goes through your duck work is
supposed to be filtered. Air unless something went wrong with
the filtration, system you shouldn't have to clean the duck.
Work this is something that started roughly five between five

and ten years. Ago and has grown in popularity because
they can charge so much for it and had little
to no backlash on, it and in a lot of
cases it can actually do harm to the duck. Work
so it's not SOMETHING i push very, often and it's
not going to fix if you've got mold growing in

the plantum and things like, that but you do need
to find out now why the mold is. Growing YOUR
ac system should be pulling moisture out of the, air
not adding to. It and so typically if there's mold
growing in the, plenum it's because something needs to be
done to THE ac. System and that doesn't mean just

throwing in a light in there to kill. Everything DO
i recommend. Lights, sure if you've got somebody in the
house who has poor health and gets sick a, lot
A uv light can definitely help with. That does the
average person need it? Not Typically. So as far as

excess attic temperature and, moisture that sounds like a ventilation.
Issue do you have soft, events are they? Continuous if,
not open up more soft events and how is the air.
Leaving my personal preference is to use a rich vent
but if you don't have enough, ridges THEN i go

the electric used to have a lot of problems where
they would shorten start. Fires that's been pretty much cleared.
Up BUT i just like the solar powered ones Because

take it. Out you want to keep that tree because
otherwise the soils will take on more moisture than when

can do whatever you need to do in order to
protect your. HOME i know there's some areas, where, oh
they don't want you to do anything to the. Tree
sometimes you do have to get an arborist involved to

argue with. Them it's a tree worth tearing up your.
Foundation typically Not, NOW i don't normally recommend cutting the tree. Down,
normally WHAT i would tell you, is let's do a root.
Shield but because it's tearing up his driveway and it's
only ten foot from the, house well it's not leaving

a whole lot of room to put in the root,
shield and he's still going to have other things that
are being damaged by the. Roots so that's reason the
recommendation is take it out and be done with. It

cleaning and basically you did not recommend. It it was
scheduled OR i was scheduled to have it done at my.

still not recommend duck cleaning in our, case just concern

fiberglass insulation in the, walls they can inject this non
expansive foam that will encapsulate that, insulation seal all the air,
gaps and give you AN r value up and around

Bills it's going to help reduce the noise from outside
by eighty. Percent it's just going to make the house
all around more energy efficient and. Comfortable that's what they
do AT Usa. Insulation now take that same scenario on
a house that was built in nineteen, sixty has no
insulation in the. Walls they can still inject this foam insulation.
