Speaker 1 (00:03):
It's that time time, time, time, walking load.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
The Michael Verie Show is on the air. Nay Davison,
you know, says eating a Taco Bell breakfast burrito in
my paint stained raddy shorts that no self respecting gay
man would ever wear. And then he included a photo.
And what's weird about that is the photo is of
his junk. Well, I mean it's covered with the jeans,

(00:34):
but you know it's a gay dude underneath there, and
he's got the bean burrito on top of it. It says,
what was I say? Bean and chicken? Man? I hadn't
had a bean burrito in a minute in a cup
of coffee, speaking of Lizard and Jerry, Let's go get
one man. I'll be blowing dirt all afternoon. I just

(00:55):
don't know what it is Friday. But you know what,
the last time I did it, and it's honestly probably
been ten years, I thought to myself, stop being a
big old sissy and go get you a bean burrito,
no onions and tostada and a coke or pepsi at
Taco Bell like you used to do. You're throwing in
a towel, giving in the old man time just go

(01:19):
do it. And so I did, and I had several
and I was blowing dirt for hours, and I'm sitting
there on the toy, you know like that like the heave,
you know, the dry heaves, and I was thinking, you know,
nothing is worth this, not even a bean burrito. Man,
that was the deal when I was in high school.
Dollar ninety two. That was the best bang for the

(01:41):
buck out there. It was right there on sixteenth Street.
They moved it open. Another one, I miss that. My
favorite Taco Bell tweet story is it was an NBA
player a few years ago. Let's say it was Kevin Durant.
It wasn't he He says, it's eleven o'clock and I
just got back from a late night Taco Bell re

(02:03):
Remember it was to make the run for the border
or whatever. He said. I just made the run for
the border and got Taco Bell. And the little twenty
two year old social media manager girl for the entirety
of Taco Bell, was all excited. NBA player, he's eating
Taco Bell. I'm gonna get a bonus. What did you
get at His response within a minute, diarrhea, Oh man,

(02:25):
it was just money, just money. Joe you're back.

Speaker 3 (02:32):
As I am.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Ramon said, quote, no, really, he wasn't done talking about
the dome, and he really has to tell you what
needs to be done with it.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
Well, the point is, you know it's a historical marker.
Instead of tearing it down. I think they you know,
in Wisconsin they have the Great Wolf Lodge and inside
that they have restaurants and uh amusement parks. Why can't

(03:07):
they make that inside the astrodom. It's a good investment
if somebody is it.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
Well, have you ever invested in a entertainment facility with
hospitality lodging restaurants? Have you done that before?

Speaker 3 (03:24):
No?

Speaker 2 (03:25):
No, I haven't. What's a typical return on investment on
that type of deal? What kind of capital requirement does
it take? Well? Better question what kind of return on investment?
I'll go raise the money? How much? What What do
you think I could I could expect on my money
cash on cash, let's assume it we get a good rating.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
Well, I think you to make a good return. I mean, okay,
what's my return?

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Tzar?

Speaker 3 (03:53):
I really don't know because I'm not a businessman.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
But right, but you said it's a good investment.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Well, I would think so. I mean advice turn it down.
You know, of course it's cheaper to tear it down.
But if you had some investors, yeah, invest in the dome.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
You know how many investors are looking to invest in
it right now?

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Probably none?

Speaker 2 (04:19):
Do you know why I do not? Because it's not
a good investment?

Speaker 3 (04:26):
Why not?

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Well? Well, I mean the better question is why is
it so all right to you? What's it?

Speaker 3 (04:34):
You know what?

Speaker 2 (04:34):
I'm a play along, Joe, I'm play Let me tell
you why not? All right? There is a reason though.
The only time anyone talks about redoing the dome, there's
two times they do it when local TV stations need
web clicks. They say, hey, what should be done with
the dome? And every person yourself, I won't include you

(04:54):
in this. Every googer out there says that's a good
business's a good investment. They come up with all their
great ideas. Not one of them has ever done a deal.
They have no idea how difficult this would be to
make this work. But let me play along. Oh that's
number one or number two. It's people who are bond lawyers.
Some of them are my friends. And if they can
do a two billion dollar deal, which is now what

(05:15):
it started at five hundred million. Now we're at two
billion dollars. And so what they the bond lawyers get
paid on this. The bond lawyers will make money for
saddling the taxpayer with more debt. And that's the only
way this deal ever gets done. Do you know why?
Because there's no private sector investor that wants to touch

(05:35):
this thing. There's too much hair on the deal. But
I'll give you some reasons it won't work. Let's start
with number one. Nobody but nobody wants to drive into
that neighborhood. Well, I go to Texans games. You'd go
to Texans games more if they were out at Bridgeland.
Nobody wants to drive into that area. Nobody starts off

(05:57):
the day wanting to be at Kirby in six'. Ten
what he, Thinks, man that'd be a great, time unless
you're looking for crack er. Prostitutes all, Right so it's
in a horrible AND i mean horrible. Neighborhood number, two it's.
NOT i don't know if people, think, well ninety percent

(06:17):
of it's. Done all you got to do is slap
some paint on. It that building is. Decrepit it's sixty years.
Old it has been sitting there vacant for. Years there's
a reason they don't open it up and charge admission
for you to walk. INSIDE i cannot. Understand what if
you can tear Down Yankee, STADIUM i got news for

(06:38):
you can tear down to.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
Astronom well it's all we, Got. Michael people tell me.
THAT i wouldn't say that out. Loud that's worse than
not having a for. You what did Bred Mensaric menzaric?
Play was de mug? Moog why that didn't take?

Speaker 2 (06:57):
Off got an? Email why do you get? So oh?
Man people come up with what you think are dumb
ideas for the. Astrodome, Well i'm glad you. Asked let
me tell. You. So let's go over the last few
years here and for those of us that live In,
houston In Harris, county The astrodome was considered unsuitable for

(07:22):
The oilers ninety three to ninety. Four Bud adams won
one hundred and eighty million dollars to renovate. It team was.
Terrible he, said all, Right i'm going To. Nashville and
he regretted it from the minute he did, it but
he put his pride put his pride on, it And
Bud adams was a very prideful man and a jackassd

(07:42):
but that's that's separate aside from this. Deal So Bud
adams moves the. Team, Well houston can't be without AN nfl.
Team come on The. Astros in short order Began lanier
Is astros want to. Move and Then Mayor Bob lanier
is trying to, renovate is trying to resuscitate Downtown, houston

(08:07):
which was in, bad bad. Shape so he did three.
Things he Got Gordon bethune to re up his deal
in one not one Show. PLAZA i forget the name
of that. Building it's it's on the what would that
be that it's on the midtown end of. Downtown Uh

(08:28):
so that was a big deal for downtown. Leasing that
that set a good. Trend you Had Randall davis did
The Rice, hotel so that got rid of the homeless
people there and you, know started some brought residents back
and you saw a lot of people come. Back Commerce,

(08:49):
tower a lot of residential came. Back and the third
thing was the building of what was then in Ron.
Field it's now on its third, incarnation but at the
time it was in Ron field and that was a Ken,
ley you, know that was part of bringing downtown. Back

(09:09):
and so you built the city assisted with the baseball,
stadium and then we did the football stadium which is N,
rg and then we did The Toyota center basketball stadium and,
concerts and then interestingly, enough the soccer stadium was done

(09:36):
with very little public. PARTICIPATION i think it was seven
and a half million, dollars surprisingly little public. Participation The anshultz,
family billionaire family put up most of the almost all
of that money themselves because there wasn't much left to
do that. With so now you now you've got brand

(09:58):
new baseball for, football basketball stadiums that the taxpayer's paid
for right and. Now and by the, way you've locked
up a lot of your tax. Base. Yesterday Todd, edwards
who was was With Midtown, district the redevelopment the urs

(10:20):
they call it tax increment reinvestment. Zone the way a
tax increment reinvestment zone works is that you take the
marginal increase in tax revenues and you can reinvest them
right there in your. District so imagine if you, personally
every dollar you make going forward above what you make,
today every marginal. Dollar instead of having to send it

(10:43):
to the, irs you could just invest it in your
own house and make a world of. Difference, well used
to be the state law that enabled the ters is
allowed up to ten percent of your tax base to
be locked up in the. Tours so you had The Greenspoint,
tours you Had Upper Kirby. Tours you had The, galleria

(11:03):
which was the uptown. Urs you had The midtown. Tours
you had Then almeta got, one which was a nod
to the political influence Of Sheila Jackson. Lee you had
that tours over. There you had these business. Districts you
had The west what was it Called, beltway and it's
the best run one of all of. Them Jim murphy

(11:24):
used to run. IT i don't know if he still.
Does that was the best run one of them of.
All AND i forget what that's Called West, Side it's
whatever it. Is but what happens is you lock up
of the downtown. District you lock up these pieces of
your revenue, source which is your tax base in a.
Urs each one of them wants to do it because

(11:46):
it gives them a competitive. Advantage so now you're not
getting money from them to pay for cops and fire
and water And, okay so you got, that so now
you just, like let's wipe that off the table from our.
Revenue so now we got to go to the people
and get more money from. Them and then your bond
has floated for so much money that you're servicing this

(12:08):
debt of these sports. Stadiums and then you've got police
just got the biggest deal they've ever forgotten in their.
History they out to name the building For Ray hunt
and And Doug griffith because they negotiated the best deal
for police officers that has ever been done by, far

(12:28):
by one. Hundred then you've got the, firefighters and the
firefighters wanted to be made whole for all the Screwing
Sylvester turner gave, them which was kind of role, reversal but,
anyway they they they wanted to be made. Whole so
that that costs you a ton of. Money you've got

(12:50):
theft and fraud and. Increases you've got a municipal pension
system that is on a fast track to. Bankruptcy and
now you've got the control who sat idly, by laid
right up next To Sylvester turner and allowed all this
money to be wasted all these years When sylvester was a,
mayor and now you got the white guy they didn't
want in, there which Is, whitmeyer and they go, up

(13:14):
now the city's going to be. Bankrupt, well where have
you been for the last few? Years, yes you're, right
so you already have a city that's. Bankrupt don't make
me start Into Harris county in What Rodney ellis has
done to the. County so you're. Broke, okay if there
was a private investor willing to come in and blow
the billion dollars plus it would take because the scale

(13:36):
of something like, that you don't just put a cafe
in the astronom. Right the only thing it has going
for it is it has ready made, parking and you've
got parking most of the, time and it does have a.
History so, yeah the only way that deal gets done
is taxpayer, money and there are people trying to spend
more of your tax payer. Money so, Yes i'm a
touch passionate about the. Matter and you want that's another

(14:01):
shut up and sing, Band BUT i like that opening
a touch more distortion THAN i would ideally. Like WHEN
i grew up listening to the seventies rock AND i get,
it you, KNOW i get the need to bust the
speaker and try to Be Jimmy, hendrix and you know
there's something to be said for. That BUT i like
a good clean, guitar AND i, like you know WHAT

(14:26):
i really, like AND i like it more As i've gotten.
OLDER i, LIKE i like Zz top playing a bass
guitar like a. Rhythm that's WHAT i. Like that's, Man
you wonder you got think about think about how much
he had to train the skin on his. Fingers that's
why his nails are so. Long can you imagine how

(14:48):
hard that would. Be those those strings are and they're
not an, instinct but they're, THICK i mean really. Thick
and to do that for all these, Years, wade you're
on The Michael Berry.

Speaker 4 (14:59):
Show go, Ahead, Hey, Michael, hey you were talking about
the astronome just a little bit. Ago AND i want
to let you know THAT i am a committeeman and
every year.

Speaker 2 (15:07):
Before The Rodeo Store committee.

Speaker 4 (15:10):
R O C Radio Operations.

Speaker 2 (15:11):
Committee, okay y'all not the one that man handled, lenahdogs are? You?

Speaker 4 (15:15):
No unfortunately we didn't get that pleasure of doing. That, no,
sir we did not. Know we set up all the
horse panels on the stadium. Floor we do all the
mutt and busting anything else that they. Need we do
all the panels inside the center for all the kids
and their show animals and.

Speaker 2 (15:32):
Whatnot how long you've been doing, That.

Speaker 4 (15:36):
I'll be going on five years.

Speaker 2 (15:37):
Now what is your day.

Speaker 4 (15:39):
Job i'm a vessel. Agent we've talked.

Speaker 2 (15:42):
Before, oh, okay a vessel agent like maritime, Maritime, yes,
sir are you do you work over to?

Speaker 4 (15:49):
Port Actually i'm at my office in The gallerria right,
now but most of the, time, YES i am at
The port of visiting captain and.

Speaker 2 (15:56):
Vessels are you? Independent, NO i work.

Speaker 4 (15:59):
For a company Called, seaport the one to make the coffee.

Speaker 2 (16:04):
Wish oh that's a bad coffee right. There, yeah my
dad said they drank that out At DuPont seaport Or.
COMMUNITY i can't remember one of. Them that's kind of
just famously. Bad but, anyway thank. You so you're a committee,
man and y'all take a tour every year of the
rodeo of the Astronom.

Speaker 4 (16:23):
Yeah, Sir, yeah we're just kind of go in there
and see how it looks every, year just to kind,
of you, know scan. It see what looks like pretty
much as a storage. Unit that's all it. Is, yeah
you got a bunch of big.

Speaker 2 (16:32):
Boxes you got all the seats.

Speaker 4 (16:33):
On the stadium, floor golf carts side by, side all
up and, down you, know around the circle that we
can drive. Around and then you, know we take. Pictures
got old bud light signs still hanging on up, there
old well flargo sign holes all in the, roof water.
Everywhere supposedly there's neutral running around. There, YEAH i, haven't,

(16:55):
yeah personally seen. It apparently the size of a Great.

Speaker 2 (16:58):
Dane oh, Yeah i've seen.

Speaker 4 (17:00):
Him In, chema But i've never seen him inside the.

Speaker 2 (17:02):
Astrodim they spent a fortune a few years ago on
a mold remediation because you can imagine that thing is
a mold. Incubator And, michael.

Speaker 4 (17:13):
But they keep the ac on twenty four.

Speaker 2 (17:15):
Seven they have, To they have, to but that all
the measures they have to. Take it is unnatural and
immoral to conduct operations in a public building like this
that everybody knows will never be used. Again it will
never ever be used, again and everybody knows. It Ed
emmett told me that he understood my, point but he

(17:40):
could not let the astrodome be torn down on his,
watch because that's not how he wanted to be. Remembered
AND i, said, ed you AND i have disagreed on
a lot of, things but you have greater leadership skills than.
That if it's the right thing to, do it's the
right thing to. Do and everybody knows, it literally everybody knows,
it but nobody wants to tell it because there's a
bunch of people out there that are still, wearing you,

(18:01):
know still still pining for their. Childhood and that's the, Dome.
Michael and people will tell. Me, wait they'll, say, wow
you want to tear down the. Dome that's all we
got to WHICH i THINK i wouldn't say that out.
Loud if that's all you, got that's worse than not having.
Anything that's. Terrible i've had people say that they don't
know where to take people when they come and visit

(18:23):
from out of, town so they drive over and look
at the. Dome you could do that on your. Screen
that's not it's not like it's a beautiful. Site it's
a terrible. Idea it's a terrible waste of, money it's
a terrible waste of. SPACE a public. Space but there's
no leadership that is willing to, say, hey this is
what we need to. Do it's the right thing to.

Speaker 4 (18:44):
Do but it is the right thing to do THAT i,
mean there's like you, said they have to put the
ac on twenty four seven tou of. Mold all they're
doing is using it as a storage. Facility there's nothing
else in. There you. Know people come in there and
grab whatever materials that they, can you, know his story in,
there and then we come on out for the you,
know of course the.

Speaker 2 (19:02):
Rodeo but that's. All that's all it. IS i will tell, You,
Wade i'm in a movie Called Love Your blue that,
Y'ALL i, Mean Love Your bum which y'all won't go.
Watch that's drive me, crazy that's. Uh that's On Amazon
prime and it's. Fantastic and they Interviewed wade And pastorini
in The dome and this was That those interviews were

(19:24):
done probably two three years ago, Maybe and, yeah it
was cool to see the two of them sitting up
in the stands being interviewed in the empty. STADIUM i
will admit that that's absolutely. Cool it's not THAT i
don't like The. DOME i love the. Dome BUT i also,
realized you, know sometimes you have to bury your relatives
when they. Die sometimes you have to sell your family

(19:45):
home when your dad moves. Out sometimes, you as an,
adult you make mature decisions and move. On it's not
paying tribute to the, astrodome the inability to take it
down and use the space better and save the money
off of. It but what, ever what do you do
with as a vessel? Agent pretty, MUCH i board talked
to the.

Speaker 4 (20:05):
CAPTAINS i got to set pilot lines and, tugs got
to do with customs, immigration give them a timely schedule
that when the vessel's going to be, birthed and then,
uh they'll come, along do face check with all the
crew and then, yes and then they're free to load
or discharge or whatever whatever product that they are loading
or discharging and set pilot lines and.

Speaker 2 (20:27):
Toe So i'll make a lot of money doing, that you.

Speaker 4 (20:31):
Would, think, So but, yeah this this. Business you, know
we we've had a lot of things go digital so
ever SINCE covid, hit and so it's it's the agency
world was big and, booming but now it's kind of
diminishing due to the fact that everything's going digital and
it's a lot easier for everybody just to do everything.

Speaker 2 (20:51):
Online, now have you ever deal with? Marine, no, yes,
sir you know you Know Pat.

Speaker 4 (20:57):
STUTTERARD i not off the top of my, head, no.

Speaker 2 (21:01):
Sir he he's a great guy that he's an old
friend of. Mine he calls me every year on my
birthday and leaves me a, long rambling. Voicemail. UH i
just adore that guy. THAT i guess the two guys
THAT i know that that you would know in the maritime.
Business the other one WHO i just saw the other
day first time in years Is christian O'Neil At Kirby.

(21:22):
Corporation you Know, Christian.

Speaker 4 (21:24):
I've heard of. Him i've personally never met. HIM i
usually deal with just their dispatch on on. There the
owners of me have probably seen them at some of the,
parties The christmas parties and wasn't that the maritime business goes.
Out And i've probably talked.

Speaker 2 (21:39):
To him many of.

Speaker 5 (21:39):
Times you.

Speaker 2 (21:40):
Know the faith out preceded him was a legend stressed
with a Beb, bertram but it's a it's an untraditional,
Name bertram Uh Burden Burden lawrence Was Burdon, lawrence that Right.
Lawrence he was, born was a. Llegend christian had big

(22:00):
shoes to, feel But christians a smart. Cat he will
do very. Well at, Time, MARY i Had muslim fella
send me a MESSAGES i posted on the. Facebooks it
makes a lot of people really mad WHEN i say,
This BUT i don't Believe god minds if you eat.

(22:21):
Pork and he, said my Religion islam forbids me from eating,
Pork you should rethink posting. That who'd you THINK i
was poking? At right? There if that doesn't piss The

(22:43):
jews And muslims, off what's the. Point it took me
a minute to open my computer my phone and go.
There and and by the, way let's see IF i
can find exactly HOW i styled this. Statement BUT i
made the comment WHICH i believe to be, true, like oh,

(23:07):
yeah this won't win me any. Friends BUT i don't
Believe god demands you restrict your hours of. OPERATIONS i
don't Think god is sitting on his throne in heaven
and thinking to, himself do they really honor?

Speaker 3 (23:20):
Me?

Speaker 2 (23:23):
Perhaps perchance are they putting other gods false icons ahead of.
Me the only WAY i can know is if they
will commit not to open before noon On. Sunday that's
really the only WAY i can. Know, yep three minutes

(23:45):
before you can drink. Beer god wants to see.

Speaker 3 (23:48):
You.

Speaker 2 (23:48):
Wait god likes to see. You wait now at, Noon
he'll give you a special. Dispensation you can have a beer, then,
yeah but not for three more. Minutes we're Honoring. God
you know, This chris whatever it, Is, chris what's the
lead Singer? Coldplay Chris? Martin Chris. MARTIN i went back

(24:11):
and watched that again and the LINE i wrote it,
down either they're having an affair or they're very. Shy the.
Video you remember that was only nine months. Ago it
feels like it was five years, ago doesn't. It that Was,
yeah so she probably having a baby here. Soon that
was only nine months. Ago what's crazy is that things

(24:36):
take on a significance of epic, proportion very, intense but
only for a. Moment it burns, out and then it
moves on and everyone. Forgets SOMETIMES i go back and
look a year ago at what we were talking about
or what was being talked, about and it was the biggest.

(24:57):
Thing and what's amazing is is it's like Groundhog. Day
people's ability to wake up and think that is the.

Speaker 1 (25:04):
Most important thing in That hans dream mankind my going
you need not talk.

Speaker 2 (25:08):
About, It and three days later there's not a soul
that ever mentions.

Speaker 4 (25:13):
It.

Speaker 2 (25:13):
Again it's, crazy by the, way real, QUICK i THINK
i mentioned, this But i'm going to re up it
Because i've not solved my. PROBLEM i was asked about
two weeks, ago within a one week period by three different.
People two of them would have been significant commercial. Loans
one of them wasn't, significant BUT i would like to

(25:33):
help the person out, nonetheless who needed a commercial. Bank,
NOW i want to be. Clear there's a commercial. Bank
there's a bank on every. CORNER i don't need a
reference of a. BANK i want a partner for the.
Show this is a. BUSINESS i make no bones about.
IT i understand some people think you shouldn't nobody should

(25:53):
charge for. Anything that is not WHAT i am discussing.
HERE i am talking about a sponsor of the. Show
it is our partner that will take care of our,
listeners and in return for the obscene amount of money
they will spend with our, station they will get all
of our listeners, business not, all but as many as
we can possibly feed. Them AND i want to make

(26:14):
sure that they fit within our branding and our, message
to be part of the stable of our show, sponsors
and that would be a locally owned business bank commercial.
Bank if they have a retail, side that's, fine BUT
i don't need a retail. BANK i need a commercial
bank because a lot of our listeners are small and

(26:36):
mid sized business owners and they're looking to expand and
they need a commercial bank with a. Relationship it used
to Be Cadence bank when my Buddy Paul murphy ran,
it but when he left and went out on his,
own our relationship with them as a sponsor ended and
we haven't had a commercial bank since. Then we've had

(26:59):
several that we've talked, to but you don't have to
send me the phone number of your. Banker it's good
if you have a good local. Banker but these folks
are going to hold out till we get somebody AND
i can hand them three, clients hopefully in short order
when they. Start SO i am looking for. Someone if
that is, you don't send me their, number talk to

(27:19):
them and if they're, interesting they can email me And
i'll put them with our folks who are coordinating that
or at least used to be the PERSON i had
given the banking category. FOR i don't know if you
know this. RAMON i had to cut ties With Robert,
REESE i posted last night BECAUSE i might as well
make this. Public rough, DAY i had to cut ties
with the longest serving and most prolific relationship manager for

(27:42):
our show and even our. Station he has dutifully and
brilliantly helped build the businesses of so many of our
show sponsors That i've lost Count, sadly sometimes a tree
of friendship must be prone on pure principle and the
unforgivable thing he did after my comment conversation yesterday About
