Speaker 1 (00:00):
Back here at People's Bank Arrana Mike chris Pino, joined
by Luke Murray, the youth con assistant. You just take
a look at the stat sheet, talk a little bit
about what happened on this one, coach. Let's start with
Eric Ryber. How about that sixteen points for the freshman.
We talked to him after the game. He also had
six rebounds in the game and only played nineteen minutes.
I mean, as a first year guy, you have to
(00:20):
like what you're seeing there.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Yeah, I mean I thought he should have had twenty
and ten, And be honest with you, I thought he
had a couple of plays around the rim that he
could have converted and established a little bit deeper position.
But I do think there was a couple of times
that he was open in the role game that we
didn't find him. But yeah, I mean, I thought for
the most part, he continued to battle. He's got to
continue to get better defensively in terms of his rim
protection and really becoming a force there, and then you know,
(00:45):
getting better as a rebounder. You know, it's nice to
see him coming away with six rebounds, but that's something
that he's going to have to really keep working on
but nice to see him have a good scoring output.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Yeah, Husky's only one block shot tonight, obviously you want
more than that, but assist a turnover ratio seven team
to eight. This is one of those grinder out games.
Who were talking about it off air, but I mean,
I don't know, how do you explain that. I mean,
you were sitting on the bench watching it the whole night.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Yeah, you know, it's tough. They play an interesting style.
You know, they switch a lot on and off the ball,
and we watched that a lot coming in on tape.
You know, the way that they played against Virginia Tech
and the way that they played in some of their
early season games. They've given some teams some struggles. So
for us, you know, it's a little bit of a
different style. It's something that we're not used to seeing,
so that takes a little bit of thought. But then
I also thought we missed a ton of open shots.
(01:32):
You know, I thought Alex and Solo in particular had
some really clean looks. I thought in the first half,
we didn't convert around the rim as well as we
needed to. We were only shooting fifty percent at the rim,
and our game goal was seventy percent at the rim
in terms of our conversion rate. So yeah, I just
you know, maybe it's a little bit of that shooting variance.
You know, I think our assist numbers could have easily
been into the twenties if we kind of shoot the
(01:52):
way that we're taped typically capable of. But I give
them a little bit of credit. You know, they're the
tallest team in the country combined height on their roster,
and so they have some length on the perimeter. They
get some late contests, and like I said, the switching
is a little bit unique.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
Oh, you held them under thirty percent shooting though. As
far as field goal percentage, how much of that was
your defense do you think? And how much was of
that was them just poor shooting.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
I think it was the defense. You know, That's really
what coaches emphasized for the last couple of days coming
out of Arizona. You know, disappointed and obviously the way
that we rebounded the ball and the way that we
defended the paint. So you know, this is a different
type of game. Arizona was, you know, in the three
fifties in the country, and the percentage of their shots
that come from three Bryant was the opposite. You know,
half of their shots are threes. It's top twenty five
(02:36):
in the country. You know, percentage of shots coming from three.
You see it even tonight. I mean, they made eleven
field goals in the game, and seven of them were three.
So that's kind of what they do, is play along
the perimeter. But I thought we were really disruptive. We
had twenty one forced turnovers. I thought we were, you know,
an inch or two away from having twenty four twenty
five on plays that we deflected or almost stole. So
I thought our defensive intensity was really good, and I
(02:56):
thought that that, more than anything, probably affected their shot man.
You know, we made a couple of mistakes in the
second half and a little pocket in the first half
where we think we'd let up our guard a little bit,
but by and large, I mean we held him below
our game goal. Our game goal was point eight to
one points per possession, and they scored points seventy five,
So we're pretty happy with that.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
Yeah. Luke Murray with his final question for is Silas
Demery Junior again showing what point guards are supposed to do.
I always two for eight from the field, did not
make a three, but Luke ten rebounds, ten points, ten assists.
I mean, point guards are funny. I mean I've been
around guys like Jason Kidd and he played games where
(03:35):
he didn't score points and the Nets would win by twenty.
I mean there's a lot of ways that guys like
Demery can impact a game.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Yeah, for sure, for sure, And I thought he did
a next job. It reminds me a lot of t News.
I think maybe his first triple double here against Buffalo
in the twenty three season, where he didn't necessarily play
the most esthetically pleasing offensive game, but just sort of
stayed in the mix. You know, Silas had three offensive rebounds,
you know, was big on the defensive glass in the
first half, made some nice decisions with the ball against
(04:03):
their switching defense, like I said, and just sort of
grinded it out. So I give him a lot of
credit for the way that he competed, and the triple
doubles obviously always special.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
All right, coach, appreciate it. Happy Thanksgiving. I'll see you
in New York.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
See you in New York. Thanks my, that's Luke Murray.
