Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show or with
Dan Hurley on Mike Crispino. A little later on, we
talked to one of the Yukon players as well. But coach,
let's catch up before you head to New York on
Black Friday to take on Illinois, and we'll talk about that,
but a couple of games to kind of review here.
University of Arizona came into Gamble and what you know,
(00:23):
most folks that were in the building said was one
of the great crowds that Gamble has seen for an
exciting top five matchup. Huskies don't come out on top,
but I just overall your sense of what happened that
night and what you thought your team got out of that,
if there's a way to describe.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
That, Yeah, I mean trying to you know, backtrack there too, you.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Know, because you're you're when that's over, you're you're, you know,
you're kind of you're dealing with Bryant and you know
you're watching five of their games and the turnarounds pretty quick.
Then you play that game, and so much from went
on in that game is circulating through your brain. But
I would say that with the Arizona game was was
you know, just a situation where you.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Probably you know, walk out of it.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
From a long term perspective, saying, if we get the
full squad on the court, you know, I really like
our chances of improving a lot and you.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Know, becoming a contender.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
And the short term you're crushed because you're an opportunity
to steal it, you know, versus you know, a team
that was able to you know, exploit us on the backboard.
I think the only guy on our team this year
that has rebounded the.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Ball, well, it has been Taris. Literally, I think.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
In every other position we've we've underachieved as rebounders, notwithstanding
Silus's you know, ten rebounds in the last game.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
But yeah, so I think you're.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
You're frustrated, You're you're gutted that you had a one
point lead with the chance to got to stop. You know,
they miss, you know, they miss a mid range pull
up pretty badly. Instead of us being able to grab
the ball and go down and give ourselves a chance
to score, you know, they pick it up off the floor,
turn and score, you know, and then obviously, uh, you
(02:15):
know the third you know, putting yourselves digging a thirteen
point hole is never a good idea, you know, versus
a real classy team. You know that they're they're a
very classy team. They got a great coach, they have
a classy program, they're they're they're you know, they're they're
big time and everything they and everything they do. And
I think that they'll be great contenders this year for championships.
(02:35):
But yeah, uh, long term, you know, if we can
get healthy, I think things will be. I think we
got a shot to be really good. But short term.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
Brutal, no, no question about it. Second chance points in
that game were brutal, sixteen to five, and and and
the rebounding thing. We know what out terrorists, you're not
going to rebound as well. But I think what in
my mind what came out of that? And you can
disagree obviously it rebounding sometimes has to be a team thing,
doesn't It doesn't have to be five guys attacking the
(03:07):
glass and kind of coming up with things.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Yeah it does.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
I mean there's there's effort, but then there's also you
got to have physical strength and you know what they brought,
and you have to have intention, you know. But I
would say they brought a very high level of physicality
into that, you know, into gamble, and they pushed us around.
They're physically way stronger than us. We did not play
with any type of physical strength whatsoever. And just to
(03:34):
be you know, to be to be minus twenty. And
then the forty two paint points, I mean they're literally
you know, just you know, from the beginning of the
scout with Luke all the way through you know, timeouts
and huddles, it was like, stop hugging non shooters and
forced these guys to throw the ball out of the
(03:55):
post and out of the paint to the three point
line and make these guys beat us at the three
point line. But just we we we made just so
many mistakes relative to the plan of the game, and
then we got physically overpowered, which you know, you play
at Yukon with the resources that we invest in in
everything relative to that, we shouldn't get dominated like that.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
Yeah, the crazy stat of the game, and there were
ten lead changes seven times late couldn't hang on. But
the crazy stat to me, among others was fast break
points won by Arizona, none by Yukon, and well, Huskin
has been running the break pretty well I think in
the opening six games, don't you.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Yeah, I mean it was a slug fest. I mean
it was. It was truly a brutal battle. And I
think you know, both teams, they played really hard. They
knew points would be at a premium. They defended us
really well. We defended them really well, minus you know,
not defending the paint and being able to handle them
(04:59):
on the backboard. But yeah, I mean it was just
it was a low possession game and uh, I'm not
really sure who that favored.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
I mean it was it was a net. It was
a net nothing.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
And finally on that one Jadeen Bradley. I mean sometimes
these games, and Dan, you've been doing this a long time,
You've seen everything, Sometimes these games come down to like
a shot maker, just somebody who makes something on of nothing.
And I thought Jayden Bradley did that pretty well that night.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Yeah he did.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
I mean he is uh, you know he's right now,
he's in he's in a real, real groove and he's
in a uh he's a part of the year where
his confidence the sky high, and he he's been closing games,
big games, he's been closing, so he's got this mindset
at the end of the games that he's going to
make the plays and and uh, you know, I think
(05:48):
you know Silas On that that that play that that
took it from one to three kind of like late
shot clock, you know, guarded pretty well, force him to
shoot the MIDI instead takes that shot fake and then
he you know, takes a couple of steps and steps
through and and gets the lay up there. But yeah,
I mean, the guy is playing as good as any
(06:10):
point guard in the country. And he's going to be
an NBA player. You know, they're they're they're they're going
to be right up there relative to the contenders for
you know, for for final fours, national championships.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
Yeah, no doubt about it. And Bradley also, he drew
seven fouls in that game. That's pretty darn good for
a week's worth of games. But he was a right one.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
Yeah, we gifted some points, you know, we fouled him,
put him on the free throw line a couple of
times going for steels, and you know, just you know
a couple of times we uh, you know, in a
game where points are at a premium there, you know,
we committed some really bad fouls that led to uh,
he made free throws by them, and on a night
where we didn't make many free.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
Throws, all right, uh on to Bryant and we'll be
back after a time out. Dan Hurley with us the
